Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard slammed for PSG no-show – but shock stats prove he is being LET DOWN by team-mates

IT is very easy to blame Martin Odegaard when Arsenal have lost this season – but don’t be so quick to point the finger. He is the club’s captain and talismanic figure, so often relied upon for magic moments and so often delivering over the past few seasons.Martin Odegaard has hit a rough patch but he might not be to blameCredit: RexThis term, those moments have been few and far between, with just five goals and nine assists in 40 appearances in all competitions. In second half injury time, losing 1-0 to Paris Saint-Germain in last night’s Champions League semi-final first leg, Odegaard was subbed off by Mikel Arteta for 18-year-old Ethan Nwaneri, having completed just 20 of 23 attempted passes and created one chance. That about sums up Odegaard right now.The French media went in hard on the Norwegian in their ratings. Get French Football News gave him 4/10. Maxi Foot went with 3/10.READ MORE IN ARSENALFoot Mercato compared Odegaard to a “ghost” who “continually made bad decisions”.It feels as though this campaign has taken its toll on Odegaard, each and every game looking like a painful struggle when normally he is effortlessly brilliant. His execution, his inspiration, his consistency, has been lacking, and that can be attributed to a number of factors. An ankle injury picked up on international duty with Norway on September 9 derailed his momentum at the start of the season, returning nearly two months later and just one goal in his next 18 matches. Most read in FootballBEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERSThen the 26-year-old became a father for the first time in early December with his wife Helene, a significant period that will have left him exhausted mentally and physically. And then, perhaps most significantly, came the injuries to key players. First it was Bukayo Saka, then it was Gabriel Jesus and then it was Kai Havertz, all by the start of February. The spotlight, the scrutiny, the pressure on others suddenly honed in on Odegaard. The expectation was that he would rise to the challenge and drag Arsenal to glory.Any fan who has watched Arsenal recently can tell you that has not happened. He is letting games pass him by instead of taking them by the scruff of the neck, pulling rabbits out of the hat.And yet, the stats tell a slightly different story, that Odegaard DOES step up in the absence of others, but is being let down by those currently around him.Since the start of last season, when playing with Havertz up top, Odegaard has 14 goals and 13 assists, and per 90 minutes on average creates 2.5 chances, produces 2.7 crosses and plays 7.2 passes into the box.In the 20 games played without the German striker, Odegaard has just two goals and seven assists, but has produced per 90 minutes more chances [2.9], more crosses [3.5] and more passes into the box [8.6].It is the same story with Saka. With the England winger on the pitch since 2023/24, Odegaard has scored 11 goals with 15 assists, and averages per 90 minutes 2.5 chances created, 2.1 crosses and 6.8 passes into the box.Without him, Odegaard’s goal and assist tally drops to five, but racks up per 90 minutes 2.8 created chances, 5.4 crosses and 9.5 passes into the box.Odegaard’s numbers rise but his goal involvement does not. What does that tell us? It shows the likes of Mikel Merino and Leandro Trossard are not making the most of Odegaard’s positioning and vision at times, leaving Arsenal’s playmaker frustrated and isolated. It is arguably why he lost possession 14 TIMES against PSG, as well as losing six of his eight ground duels. And between them, Merino, Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli have missed a joint 21 big chances this season.Read More on The SunAs the saying goes, “a bad workman blames his tools”, but Odegaard may have a point.Following a summer of rest, recovery and family time, joined in pre-season by new signings with a view to quality over quantity, we will likely see Odegaard return to his best. It was a wonderful moment.”We haven’t seen something emotional like this in years, and hopefully, it’s a sign. “Hopefully, Michael is on the mend. It’s been a long, horrible journey for the family, and maybe we’ll hopefully see him in the F1 paddock soon.”Most read in MotorsportHe added that the whole of the sporting world would love to one day see Schumacher back in the public eye among his fans.”It would be so welcomed, not just from everyone in the paddock, but everyone around the world considering the awful situation he found himself in,” Herbert said.Michael Schumacher in rare health update as ex-Ferrari boss Jean Todt reveals former champ still watches F1 racesSchumacher joined all 20 living world champions – from the eldest in Stewart to the most recent winner Max Verstappen – in giving his signature. It is now set to be sold off at auction to help raise funds for Sir Jackie Stewart’s Race Against Dementia charity.Stewart was even seen completing a lap of the race track with the helmet on at the start of April. The sweet act came before the F1 Bahrain Grand Prix.Michael’s signature marks the stricken F1 legend’s only public act since his devastating ski accident in the French Alps.Schumacher now lives at a £50million custom-built property on the shores of Lake Geneva in Switzerland, where he is cared for by a dedicated team of medical staff.Only a handful of trusted people are aware of his current health status, including ex-Ferrari boss Jean Todt, his former teammates Felipe Massa and Luca Badoer, as well as longtime manager Sabine Kehm. What happened to Michael Schumacher?MICHAEL Schumacher’s life was hanging by a thread 12 years ago as medics tried desperately to keep him alive after a tragic skiing crash that left him with horrific brain injuries.The F1 legend was given the best possible treatment as he was put into a medically induced coma, had his body temperature lowered and underwent hours of tricky operations on his brain.Back in 2013, the retired seven-time world champion, and his then 14-year-old son set off on the Combe de Saulire ski run in the exclusive French resort of Meribel.Footage from his helmet camera revealed he was not travelling at excessive speed when his skis struck a rock hidden beneath the snow. He catapulted forward 11.5ft and crashed into a boulder head first that split his helmet into two and left him needing to be airlifted to hospital for two life-saving operations. At one point his family were told to brace themselves for the worst case scenario as the situation was much worse than originally believed. At the time, medics said Schumacher was likely to stay in an induced coma for at least 48 hours as his body and mind recovered. But the coma ended up lasting 250 days – more than eight months. After he woke up in June 2014, he was discharged from hospital and sent to his home in Lake Geneva to get further treatment.Since then his wife Corinna and his inner circle of friends have expertly avoided almost anything leaking out about his health status.Only small amounts of information have been released including reports that Schumacher was in a wheelchair but can react to things around him.In 2019, it was said that Schumacher was set to undergo breakthrough stem cell therapy in a bid to regenerate and rebuild his nervous system.Renowned France cardiologist Dr Philippe Menasche, who had operated on him previously, was set to carry out the treatment that would see cells from his heart go to his brain.Following the treatment at the Georges Pompidou Hospital in Paris, he was said to be “conscious”, although few other details were given about his state. The helmet is the latest in a number of positive signs surrounding Schumacher’s health. He recently became a granddad for the first time last month after his daughter Gina welcomed a baby girl named Millie. The legendary Formula One driver is believed to have flown from his family’s villa in Majorca to their Swiss mansion in a chopper to join his daughter before the birth.Read More on The SunGina revealed she was pregnant shortly after tying the knot to partner Iain Bethke at a villa in Majorca last year. There was speculation at the time that her F1 champion dad attended the wedding, but it is unclear if he ever made the ceremony.
