Marseille vs Man City LIVE REACTION: Sterling, Ferran Torres and Gundogan on target for dominant City

MAN CITY continued their perfect start to the Champions League with a dominant 3-0 win at Marseille.
Ferran Torres, Ilkay Gundogan and Raheem Sterling scored for Pep Guardiola’s side at the Velodrome.

Follow ALL of the latest reaction below…

    GOODNIGHT!
In the end, it was straightforward for City, the scoreline certainly made it seem like that.
But Marseille made them work for their three goals.
Torres, Gundogan and Sterling did the damage, and it’s Olympiakos up next in the competition for Guardiola’s side.
They’ll be looking to make it three wins from three while Marseille struggle near the bottom of their group.
    Until then, goodnight everyone!

    PEP ON CRITICISM
“We have to accept the criticism. We play every three days, when you win it’s good but if you don’t people want to destroy everything,” he says.
“But it’s about the chairman and everyone else understanding. Part of the criticism was right, but you’ve got to accept it.
“It’s part of our job. It’s about where we’ve come from in the last month, with lack of preparation, injuries and Covid-19 but the Champions League is in a good place now.
“I’m sure we’re going to find that consistency.”

    PEP SPEAKS
“We played really well, we didn’t concede much and we were in control, patient and aggressive without the ball,” he says.
“I’m so satisfied with the performance and result, it’s always difficult to win away.
“We can play on both sides, we tried to play high and wide to stretch the pitch. Raheem Sterling was exceptional, Phil [Foden] as well.
“We didn’t expect them to play five at the back until we saw the team. Porto was the same. As much as we play against five at the back we started to take the control and rhythm.
“We were so stable defensively. Aymeric [Laporte] was good, Kyle [Walker] is in the best form since we’ve been together, Oleksandr [Zinchenko] helped us, John [Stones] played good minutes. I’m so satisfied with the way we played.”

    BIG WIN
City went top of their group tonight with a 3-0 win over Marseille.

    ACTION AREAS
Here’s where most of the possession was tonight.

    MARSEILLE 0-3 MAN CITY
In the end, it was easy, but Marseille made it a tough task for periods.
Torres opened the scoring before Gundogan made it two and Sterling tapped in to make it three.
City top of the group with six points while Porto are second with three.

    PEEEEEEEEEEEEP!
    That’s it for tonight!
Final score: : MARSEILLE 0-3 MAN CITY

    MARSEILLE 0-3 MAN CITY
90+2. Nearly over here in Marseille, three minutes of added time.
It’s been a good night for City, though it was frustrating for long periods.
They’ve bagged the three points in the end, though.

    MARSEILLE 0-3 MAN CITY
    89. Marseille, ironically, having their best spell of possession now!
Well, City have given up I suppose.

    MARSEILLE 0-3 MAN CITY
    86. Payet and Gueye come on for Marseille, but it’s a little too late now isn’t it.
City just waiting for this game to end now really.

    THIRD TIME LUCKY
What a few minutes City have just had. 3-0.

    MARSEILLE 0-3 MAN CITY
    83. De Bruyne receives a pass from Mahrez.
And the Belgian cruises past a defender before squaring for Sterling to tap home.
    Game. Set. Match.
    3-0 to City!

    GOOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL!!!!
    3-0. RAHEEM STERLING.
    CRUISE CONTROL!

    MARSEILLE 0-2 MAN CITY
    81. City bopping it around really freely now. Game is won, it’s just a matter of seeing it out.
Marseille haven’t really laid a glove on their opponents tonight.

    MARSEILLE 0-2 MAN CITY
    78. Well, it had been coming… again.
Foden picks the ball up down the left, crosses for Sterling at the back post. He heads it down and Gundogan taps it in.
    Game. Put. To. Bed.
    2-0.
John Stones comes on for Foden and Laporte goes off for John Stones. Bernardo Silva also comes on for Gundogan.

    GUNDOOOOOOOOOOO!! pic.twitter.com/ldUJS2nCmC
    — Manchester City (@ManCity) October 27, 2020

    GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLL!
    2-0 TO CITY! GUNDOGAN!

    MARSEILLE 0-1 MAN CITY
    76. Ruben Dias now trying to probe in midfield, a second goal would really put this game to bed for the away side.
Darke jokes on commentary that it’s been death by a 1000 passes for Marseille. He’s not wrong there.

    MARSEILLE 0-1 MAN CITY
    74. Cancelo providing the trickery down the left and he wins a corner.
De Bruyne takes and passes straight back to Cancelo but takes it back and his cross is cleared.

    MARSEILLE 0-1 MAN CITY
    72. Sterling breaks forward and passes it to Gundogan in the middle but the German’s shot is straight at Mandanda.
The ball is played forward for Sterling who finds a gap in the defence but the pass is too strong.

    MARSEILLE 0-1 MAN CITY
    70. Marseille still in the game here. No matter how well City are playing they’re still playing it risky here with the marginal scoreline.
They really should go for this second goal now.

    MARSEILLE 0-1 MAN CITY
    67. Some danger for City as Marseille get forward with Sansom and Amavi but City clear.
Cancelo about to come on for Zinchenko.
Perhaps a different dimension down the left for City now.

    MARSEILLE 0-1 MAN CITY
    65. Rongier comes off while Morgan Sansom comes on for the home side.
Benedetto and Payet still on the bench for Marseille, too.
Foden tries to venture upfield for City but once again he’s Dispossessed. Not been his best night.

“That is something that always gets my respect.”
Klopp also addressed the injury to Fabinho which leaves him short of centre-back options: “Losing another centreback was exactly the last thing we needed. (Fabinho) felt his hamstring and that’s not good.
He didn’t feel it too much, he said he could have played on but not make any more sprints.”

“Everyone in the squad knows that they might be important at some point in the season, like you said busy schedule, so many games unfortunately we have injuries aswell.

    ON TOP

63 per cent of possession for the Reds is no surprise, the lack of shots on goal however was.

Liverpool found a way in the end and it was orchestrated by Trent Alexander-Arnold, the right-back made a lovely run in behind the Midtjylland defence to set up Jota’s opener.
Alexander-Arnold would also set Salah off running towards goal in the 90th minute in a move which saw Liverpool win a penalty.
Fair play to Midtjylland, they put in a good performance and it was one to be proud of….. they had their chances and limited the defending Premier League champions to just TWO shots on target.

    LIVERPOOL 1-0 MIDTJYLLAND
    JUST WIDE!
    88. Midtjylland almost equalise right at the death!
It’s wonderful build-up play down the right hand-side, the ball finds its way to Dreyer on the edge of the area, he glides past Gomez with a fake shot before sending a floated effort into the side netting!

    LIVERPOOL 1-0 MIDTJYLLAND
    AWFUL MISS!
    87. Milner picks out an unmarked Alexander-Arnold inside the penalty area, he hesitates to shoot and instead pulls it back to Firmino on the penalty spot who scuffs his shot over the bar!

    85. Five minutes remaining at the end of the second half, Liverpool are cruising towards a second straight win in the Champions League group stages.
But then again, never say never, Midtjylland could come up with a moment of magic and find an equaliser.

    LIVERPOOL 1-0 MIDTJYLLAND
    83. Wonderful build-up play by Midtjylland and it’s a wonderful cross from the right hand-side by Andersson.

    LIVERPOOL 1-0 MIDTJYLLAND
    JUST WIDE!
    76. Evander controls Kaba’s cross from the left wing, he turns inside the penalty area and manages to pull the trigger but his shot flashes wide of the far post!
Alisson was caught flat footed, what a chance that was to equalise.

    LIVERPOOL 1-0 MIDTJYLLAND
    75. Andersson steamed down the right hand-side, he tried to play it into Dreyer but his pass comes up short.

    LIVERPOOL 1-0 MIDTJYLLAND
    73. Encouraging from Midtjylland, the ball breaks to Evander, he opens up his body and tries to bend a shot into the far corner but it has too much power on it and it goes comfortably over Alisson’s crossbar.

    LIVERPOOL 1-0 MIDTJYLLAND
    72. A very exciting player who is one to watch for the future is coming on, Evander replaces Sisto.
The 22-year-old will slot in behind Kaba, manager Brian Priske is looking for a hero and this lad could be the man.

    LIVERPOOL 1-0 MIDTJYLLAND
    71. Andersson floats a ball into the penalty area and it is met by Kaba but his first touch lets him down, he plays the ball back with his second touch to maintain possession.
    Decent build-up from the visitors.

    LIVERPOOL 1-0 MIDTJYLLAND
    69. 457 passes completed by the home side and 63 per cent possession. Midtjylland have done an awful lot of running and they’re looking tired.

Burnley 0-1 Tottenham LIVE RESULT: Son Heung-min gives Spurs win in drab affair at Turf Moor

IT was a familiar feeling for Tottenham as Harry Kane assisted Son Heung-min for a 1-0 win at Burnley.
The Clarets were stubborn defensively as ever but a double header with 15 minutes to go ultimately proved their undoing.

    GOODBYE!
    Thanks for following along, guys.
It wasn’t the greatest game in the history of football but we got there in the end.
    And so did Tottenham.
Despite their drab play and Jose Mourinho’s glum figure on the bench, it was two familiar faces who conjured up the magic they needed.
Kane nodded on for Son to score at the back post, and that’s three points for Spurs.

“I know Sean, I know what he brings for attacking teams, he’s very clever, he plays with what he has.
“Michael Oliver was very good. And for a match of this nature, you need a good referee, a referee with good ability.
“He was always in control, he doesn’t need to give a red card for Barnes.
“All the duels, he has to nee running with the ball, because the ball is always in the air in this kind of match.
“My players didn’t play the football we wanted but because of Burnley, not us. It was a positive game.
“This was the type of match where if you take risks you can lose it.
“Kane and Son’s understanding comes from Mauricio, not all the credits are with me. In different ways but Harry isn’t the No 9 he was. He gets into areas that allows Sonny to get in different areas.”

    VARDY HAVING THE PARTY
Speaking after the game, Jamie Vardy was asked how much it meant to get Leicester’s first win at Arsenal since 1973, he said: ” It’s big for us, but it’s just the next game where we want to keep improving- we’ve had a couple of bad results, but we just wanted to get the game plan right after a couple of bad results
“We knew it was going to be tough. We had a game plan, we weathered a bit of a storm but then started to get on the ball and we’ve come away with a 1-0 win.”
Vardy knew ahead of the game that he wouldn’t get a full game, speaking of the injury that’s kept him out Vardy added: “We spoke yesterday about the plan for the injury. It’s a little niggle, I didn’t want to be chucked straight in- luckily I came on and made an impact, giving us the full three points.
“It gives us a little boost and we want to keep building on that as a team.”

    OUT-FOXED

Pepe takes the corner and it doesn’t beat the first man, but he gets on the end of a Leicester clearance and tries to send it straight back into the six-yard box. But, again, Schmeichel is up to collect it.

    ARSENAL 0-1 LEICESTER
    91. GREAT SAVE FROM LENO!
Vardy doing what he does best- he escapes Mustafi on the left, as he breaks into the box and goes for a cheeky little dink over the keeper.
But Leno makes himself big and clears the shot with his leg- Vardy really has changed the game for Leicester.

    ARSENAL 0-1 LEICESTER
    90. Vardy wins another free-kick out on the left.
It’s taken quickly and comes to nothing, but Arsenal are struggling to break with any speed or conviction.

    ARSENAL 0-1 LEICESTER
    90. Five additional minutes at the Emirates.

    ARSENAL 0-1 LEICESTER
    89. Leicester are closing in on a win at the Emirates- let’s not forget they’ve been on a two, Premier League, game goal drought.

    ARSENAL 0-1 LEICESTER
No wonder Under is celebrating- it was a lovely assist from him, enabling Vardy to bag his 11th goal against Arsenal.

    ARSENAL 0-1 LEICESTER
    85. Vardy has been Leicester’s top goal scorer for five seasons- it wasn’t going to be any one else for the Foxes this evening was it!?

    ARSENAL 0-1 LEICESTER
    84. Final substitution for Leicester; Albrighton comes on for Maddison

    ARSENAL 0-1 LEICESTER
    83. Rodgers is grinning from ear-to-ear on the touchline after that goal. It really was a lovely bit of play.

    ARSENAL 0-1 LEICESTER
    81. Substitution for Arsenal as Tierney is replaced by Nketiah.

    80. Leicester have struck at the Emirates with 11 minutes to go with a smash and grab!
Moments earlier it was Vardy and Under who broke through Arsenal’s defence and it’s the same duo who find the back of the net.
Tielemens picks out a running Under with a loopy ball and the on-loan player speeds away from Xhaka into the box- he races to the byline and then squares it to a running Vardy who was never going to miss! Vardy’s diving header catches out Leno as Leicester take the lead.
    ARSENAL 0-1 LEICESTER

    ARSENAL 0-0 LEICESTER
    77. Flashes of something there…
Vardy lifts the ball over the defence for Under, who’s in a great space just right of the D.
His first touch is a little heavy though and he’s left racing towards the corner of the box, he keeps it alive but Arsenal are back in their droves and he’s under too much pressure to get a decent cross back into the box.

    ARSENAL 0-0 LEICESTER
    75. Fofana has been impressive at the back for Leicester this evening- the Foxes have certainly frustrated Arsenal defensively.

    ARSENAL 0-0 LEICESTER
    74. Barnes calls it as a night, as he’s replaced by Under who is on a season-long from Roma.

    ARSENAL 0-0 LEICESTER
    74. Lacazette is up but is holding his head, as he was sandwiched between Evans and Maddison as he leapt up for that ball.

    ARSENAL 0-0 LEICESTER
    72. Yellow card for Evans as he clashes with Lacazette at the edge of the box.
Looked like the pair bashed heads and they’re down receiving treatment.

    ARSENAL 0-0 LEICESTER
    71. Justin breaks away from Bellerin, as he runs down the left side of the area.
He sends a ball straight across the box, but it’s low and Leno gathers without too much of an effort.

Frustration would later lead to disaster for Everton as they saw their second straight red card in a week.
Digne hacked Walker-Peters down from behind and the referee deemed it to be dangerous play, giving Digne his marching orders.
Once down to ten men, Everton knew the game was lost. Southampton saw the game out under no pressure from the league leaders.

    Southampton corner.

    SOUTHAMPTON 2-0 EVERTON
    75. Calvert-Lewin is sent running down the line, Vestergaard shifts up a gear and beats him to the ball with a wonderful slide tackle.

Take a look at the earlier chance with Ings….. one touch and its 3-0!

    SOUTHAMPTON 2-0 EVERTON
    71. Digne gets caught in possession by Walker-Peters.
he tries to have a couple of nibbles from behind before coming down hard on the leg of Walker-Peters.

    RECKLESS CHALLENGE FROM BEHIND!!!

    SOUTHAMPTON 2-0 EVERTON
    65. Good defending from Southampton.
Digne was played down the line by Bernard, he floated the ball into the penalty area in search of Calvert-Lewin but Vestergaard got their first.

He charges down the line before picking out Ings on the edge of the area, Ings tries to slip it past Keane but the Everton man wasn’t having any of it.

LIVERPOOL were made to work hard for a 2-1 win over Sheffield United.

And Diogo Jota had the final word as he struck the winner.

    THANKS FOR JOINING US
    That’s all from us tonight.
A hard fought win for Liverpool sees the Reds move level with Everton on 13 points at the top of the table, with the Toffees in action against Southampton tomorrow.
West Ham are next up in the league for Liverpool, before a mouthwatering clash at the Etihad against Man City in November.
Sheffield United meanwhile face Manchester City at home next, before travelling to Chelsea.
It could be a tricky couple of weeks for Chris Wilder and his side.
    That’s all for tonight though.
Thanks for joining us, it’s been a pleasure.

    MATCH REPORT
Plenty to talk about after tonight’s clash at Anfield.
Sheffield United took the lead from the spot after VAR adjudged Fabinho to have fouled McBurnie JUST inside the box.
The Reds then hit back just before halftime, with Firmino tapping in the simplest of goals after Ramsdale had saved a header from Sadio Mane.

    FULL TIME CELEBRATIONS

    BLEAK FOR THE BLADES
The table makes for grim reading for Sheffield United fans.
The Blades are yet to win a game this campaign, and have just one point on the board so far.
Things don’t get much easier for Chris Wilder either, with United’s next two games being against Man City and Chelsea.

    AS IT STANDS
Liverpool go level on points with Everton at the top of the table, with the Toffees in action tomorrow against Southampton.
Tonight’s win also brought an end to a mini barren run for the Reds, who had not won in their previous two league games.

    SOLID AT THE BACK
Joe Gomez was particularly impressive at the back tonight in the absence of Virgil Van Dijk.

ON THE START TO THE SEASON
“Overall it’s been pretty positive apart from that one game against Villa.
“I think overall we’ve got to be delighted with the start.
“Of course we want to be better, that game wasn’t us and we know that.
“But I feel as though we’ve learnt from it quickly, reacted in the right way as we have done many a time and keep building, keep improving focusing on the next challenge and the next game, and that’s put us in goos stead so far.
“So we’ve just got to continue on that.
“But I thought the lads dug in really well tonight, we’ve had a lot of games and a few injuries and stuff, so delighted with the three points and the lads showed great character again.”

    ON THE CENTRE BACK PAIRING
“Yeah brilliant, it’s always going to be difficult against McBurnie up top who’s very good in the air, and then Rhian off him.
“So it was always going to be difficult for the lads, and I thought we coped, [and] worked the game out better, especially second half.
“But yeah we created some good chances, you know, probably should have killed the game off with another goal or two.
“But yeah, overall [we’ve] got to be delighted with the three points.”

    HENDO REACTS
Speaking about the toughness of tonight’s game, Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson said:
“Yeah it was hard, as expected to be honest you know.
“Sheffield United are a good side, work really hard, make it difficult and were in the game for long periods.
“So yeah we knew it would be difficult but delighted that we kept going and got the three points in the end that was important for us.”

    WINNING GOAL
Diogo Jota heads home from Sadio Mane’s cross to secure the three points for the champions.

    LIVERPOOL 2-1 SHEFFIELD UNITED
The champions fight back from a goal down to claim a hard fought victory at Anfield.
Sheffield United played well, and may feel like they deserved a point, but a brilliant Diogo Jota header means the points stay in Liverpool.

FULL TIME: LIVERPOOL 2-1 SHEFFIELD UNITED

    LIVERPOOL 2-1 SHEFFIELD UNITED
    92. CHANCE!
The ball is flicked on to Burke on the edge of the Liverpool box.
He has time to turn and shoot, but his effort is wild and off target.
He should be doing better there under no pressure.
That may be that for the game.

    LIVERPOOL 2-1 SHEFFIELD UNITED
    91. Can Sheffield United carve out one last chance for an equaliser?
Stevens tries to get a cross in from the left, but a block sees the ball bounce up into the arms of Alisson.

    LIVERPOOL 2-1 SHEFFIELD UNITED
    90. Three minutes of added time have been signalled at Anfield.

    LIVERPOOL 2-1 SHEFFIELD UNITED
    89. Jordan Henderson is down for Liverpool in some pain after taking a blow to his foot.
He should be ok to continue though.

    LIVERPOOL 2-1 SHEFFIELD UNITED
    88. Mane pinches the ball off McGoldrick, before driving into the box.
He goes down under a challenge from Basham, but Mike Dean waves his arms to say no.

    LIVERPOOL 2-1 SHEFFIELD UNITED
    87. Mane takes aim from distance, looking to curl one into the top corner.
It’s high and wide of the mark though.

    LIVERPOOL 2-1 SHEFFIELD UNITED
    86. Sheffield United yellow card.
Berge goes into the book after illegally stopping a Liverpool counter attack.

    LIVERPOOL 2-1 SHEFFIELD UNITED
    85. Five minutes left to play at Anfield, with the game delicately poised at 2-1.

    LIVERPOOL 2-1 SHEFFIELD UNITED
    84. Gomez does well to intercept a Sheffield United attack, and then win a free kick after being barged over by Basham.

    LIVERPOOL 2-1 SHEFFIELD UNITED
    82. Liverpool substitutions.
Diogo Jota is making way for James Milner.
Takumi Minamino is also coming on, to replace Roberto Firmino.

    LIVERPOOL 2-1 SHEFFIELD UNITED
    81. That is almost sublime from Salah.
He rolls John Egan expertly, before lifting an effort over Ramsdale that rebounds off the post.
That’s so unlucky, but it should be 3-1 and game over.

Ole Gunnar Solskjær explains his team selection v Chelsea, with Cavani, Pogba and Greenwood all on the bench
📺 Watch Man Utd v Chelsea live on Sky Sports PL pic.twitter.com/C5mQCbZibT
    — Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) October 24, 2020

    THE SCENE IS SET
The rain may be falling on Old Trafford, but can anything dampen United spirits after their fine week.

    ON THE MEND
Are Chelsea’s defensive woes over with the return of their new goalkeeper?
Back on Wednesday after a slight injury, Edouard Mendy has been beaten just once in his three games between the sticks for the Blues.

    LAMPARD LEAKING ON THE ROAD
Since Frank Lampard took charge of Chelsea in July 2019, no side has conceded more goals in Premier League away games than the Blues.
The West London club have shipped 42 goals in 21 away matches since the start of last season, a run that started with a four-goal thumping at Old Trafford.

    CHELSEA SUBSTITUTES
    13 Caballero, 2 Rudiger, 9 Abraham, 17 Kovacic, 18 Giroud, 19 Mount, 22 Ziyech.

    CHELSEA XI
Frank Lampard opts for a back three for the trip to Old Trafford, making one change to the side that drew with Sevilla on Tuesday. Club captain Cesar Azpilicueta comes in with Mason Mount dropping to the bench, and lines up alongside Thiago Silva and Kurt Zouma in defence. The switch to 3-4-3 will see Reece James and Ben Chilwell operate as wing-backs.
    16 Mendy, 28 Azpilicueta, 6 Thiago Silva, 15 Zouma, 24 James, 5 Jorginho, 7 Kante, 21 Chilwell, 29 Havertz, 10 Pulisic, 11 Werner.

    MANCHESTER UNITED SUBSTITUTES
    26 Henderson, 6 Pogba, 7 Cavani, 11 Greenwoood, 31 Matic, 34 Van de Beek, 38 Tuanzebe.

    MANCHESTER UNITED XI
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer names the same side that started the Premier League win at Newcastle last weekend. It means three changes from the team which won in Paris with captain Harry Maguire back along with Dan James and Juan Mata. It also means United revert to a back-four as they set out in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Edinson Cavani is on the bench.
    1 De Gea, 29 Wan-Bissaka, 2 Lindelof, 5 Maguire, 23 Shaw, 39 McTominay, 17 Fred, 8 Mata, 18 Fernandes, 21 James, 10 Rashford.

    HERE ARE THE TEAM SHEETS!

    THEATRE OF SCREAMS
Manchester United may have just set a new club record for consecutive away wins but their recent form at Old Trafford has been dire.
Another defeat on home soil today, and it will only be the second time in their history that they have lost their opening three matches at Old Trafford, and the first time since 1930.
The Red Devils have not lost three consecutive home league fixtures at any stage of the season since February 1979.
Furthermore, a fifth successive Premier League home match without a win would be another new club record.

    GOOD EVENING FROM OLD TRAFFORD
Welcome to our live coverage of Manchester United versus Chelsea in the Premier League where all eyes will be on Marcus Rashford.
It’s been quite a week for the United forward, who has proved himself a hero both at home and in France.
When not campaigning tirelessly against child poverty, he’s been busy netting Champions League winners away at PSG.
And with Anthony Martial suspended this evening, Rashford can look forward to playing alongside a new strike partner.
That could mean a United debut for new signing, Edinson Cavani, or the return to the starting line-up of another young hotshot in Mason Greenwood.
Captain Harry Maguire may also be available for a recall, but whether he deserves a spot among a backline the defended so admirably in midweek is up for debate.
Impressive back-to-back away wins have helped Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side to recover from a bumpy start but now they need to do the business on their own patch.
Chelsea have been stuttering themselves this campaign with just three wins from eight matches in all competitions despite Frank Lampard having spent big.
While his defence continue to fall to individual errors, at least Timo Werner has begun to shine now he’s head and centre of the Blues’ attack.
Others must now follow the German’s act, and that may mean a first start tonight for Hakim Ziyech after two recent cameos.
Recent trips to Old Trafford have not been kind to Chelsea, but they can take inspiration from how the London elite have treated Manchester in recent weeks.
Crystal Palace were 3-1 victors here on the opening weekend while Tottenham annihilated the Red Devils 6-1 in their last home game.
We’ll have confirmation of the two teams imminently with kick-off to follow at 5.30pm.
