Aston Villa 1 Liverpool 4 LIVE REACTION: Mane and Salah put Villa kids to sword after SHOCK equaliser – latest updates

LIVERPOOL made it through to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 4-1 win over a makeshift Aston Villa team of academy players.
Louie Barry equalised after Sadio Mane opened the scoring before the Senegalese international, Gini Wijnaldum and Mohamed Salah added to the goals in the second half.
    RESULT: Aston Villa 1-4 Liverpool
Aston Villa XI: Onodi, Bridge, Revan, Walker, Rowe, Chrisene, Barry, Kesler, Sylla, Raikhy, Bogarde
Liverpool XI: Kelleher, N. Williams, R. Williams, Fabinho, Milner, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Jones, Mane, Minamino, Salah

Follow ALL the action with our live blog below…

    THAT’S IT FROM VILLA PARK
Liverpool made it through to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a comfortable 4-1 win over a depleted Aston Villa side, who had all their senior players and staff self-isolating.
The Reds opened the scoring after just four minutes when Curtis Jones’ header found Sadio Mane unmarked and the Merseysiders’ star forward headed the ball to the back of the net.
But Villa’s youngsters showed tremendous resilience as Akos Onodi made a number of saves and Louie Barry equalised just four minutes before half-time when he outran a careless Rhys Williams and beat Caoimhin Kelleher.
But Liverpool put an end to the young lads’ hopes after 60 minutes when Georginio Wijnaldum drove a low shot past Onodi and buried the ball into his left-hand corner.
Three minutes later Mane tripled Liverpool’s lead with another header before Mohamed Salah sealed the victory on the 65th minute.
Thank you for following our live blog and have a great night!

    DELANEY REACTION
Stand-in Aston Villa manager Mark Delaney is very proud of his young side explaining that his players put together a “monumental effort”.
Delaney said: “We’re all very proud, as a club, as coaches and as players.
“It was a monumental effort really, considering what the players have had to go through in the past couple of days.
“I thought, first half, they had a lot of ball and a few chances but I thought we thoroughly deserved to come in at 1-1.
“We scored a good goal as well – we were very pleased at half-time.”

    KLOPP REACTION
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is also pleased with the result but insists it shouldn’t have been as challenging, which was a hint that there is still room for improvement.
Klopp told BT Sport: “It was a little bit more of a challenge than it should have been.
“First of all we have to say that the kids did really well, so that’s good. We had football problems and in the second half we solved those football problems with football.
“We needed a little bit longer but from then on it was completely clear and completely comfortable and completely how it should have been.”

    GETTY IMAGES – GETTY

    BARRY PROUD
Aston Villa youngster Louie Barry insists he is very proud of his team regardless of the result.
Barry told BT Sport: “The ball came through from Rowie and I knew that I had it as soon as I seen it
“I put the ball in the back of the net and obviously it was the proudest I’ve ever been in myself.
“I’ve never been so proud of a team before – from start to finish we worked so hard. When I scored I thought we might have a chance but obviously it wasn’t meant to be.
“I was cramping up towards the end but with age comes more physicality and mentality.”

    GETTY IMAGES – GETTY

    MILNER ON YOUNGSTERS
Liverpool star James Milner praised Aston Villa’s youngsters for their performance tonight.
Milner is pleased with the result but insists the situation was not “ideal” for either side.
He told BT Sport: “They put in a shift. We got the result but it wasn’t an ideal situation for either team.
“One of their lads said they hadn’t played for three months.”

    GETTY IMAGES – GETTY

    ON TARGET
Aston Villa’s youngsters will remember this game forever as some of them got their break-out moments.
One of them was Akos Onodi, who made eight saves throughout the match as explained below.
That is the highest amount for a Premier League goalkeeper in an FA Cup game since 2018.
Not bad at all for a debuting 19-year-old shot-stopper…

8 – Aston Villa’s 19-year-old goalkeeper Akos Onodi made eight saves tonight, the most by a goalkeeper for a Premier League team in an FA Cup match since March 2018 (Kristoffer Nordfeldt, Swansea vs Spurs, 8). Stoic. pic.twitter.com/R5fCAazEad
    — OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) January 8, 2021

    STATS
Liverpool dominated a staggering 83.2 per cent of possession throughout the match, which saw Aston Villa completing only one clear chance and that was their goal.
The Reds also recorded a whopping 29 shots, 13 of which were on target, compared to Villa’s two shots, with one of them being on target.
The Villans couldn’t get their passing right as they only had a success rate of 52.9 per cent compared to the Merseysiders’ 89.7 per cent.
Caoimhin Kelleher was basically non-existent in the game as he didn’t have to make a single save.
But Kelleher’s counterpart Akos Onodi was very busy as he made eight saves!

    FT: ASTON VILLA 1-4 LIVERPOOL
Liverpool made it through to the fourth round of the FA Cup.
The Reds opened the scoring just after four minutes when Curtis Jones’ cross found an unmarked Sadio Mane, who headed the ball to the back of the net.
Aston Villa, though, refused to give up as Akos Onodi made a number of crucial saves and Louie Barry outran Rhys Williams to beat Caoimhin Kelleher and net a shocking equaliser four minutes before half-time.
Villa’s hopes were raised but Georginio Wijnaldum put an end to that after 60 minutes with a beautiful low shot thanks to an assist by Takumi Minamino.
Three minutes later Mane made it three with another header following a cross by Xherdan Shaqiri and Mohamed Salah sealed it thanks to another assist by Shaqiri on the 65th minute.
Liverpool picked up a comfortable win against a depleted Aston Villa side, who were missing their senior players as they were self-isolating.
But Villa’s youngsters have nothing to be ashamed of as they put together a solid and passionate performance with almost no preparation whatsoever against arguably the best team in the country

    GETTY IMAGES – GETTY

    PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!
AND THAT’S IT AT VILLA PARK!!!!!!!!

    ASTON VILLA 1-4 LIVERPOOL
    90+1 CHANCE
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain gets to the edge of the area and delivers a low shot which just misses the target

    ASTON VILLA 1-4 LIVERPOOL
90 Two more minutes of additional time to go.
Aston Villa haven’t completed an attack in the second half

    ASTON VILLA 1-4 LIVERPOOL
88 Thiago has been magnificent ever since his introduction.
The Liverpool summer signing is basically everywhere making sure there is perfect harmony between midfield and attack.
Klopp expects much from him this season, especially now that he has overcome his injuries…

    ASTON VILLA 1-4 LIVERPOOL
    85 CHANCE!
Thiago made Liverpool’s fourth goal and almost got himself into the scoresheet!
The Spain international has been on fire ever since his introduction after all.
He gets the ball at the edge of the area then fires a shot which rattles the top of the crossbar!

    ASTON VILLA 1-4 LIVERPOOL
    84 CHANCE
Firmino finds space inside the box and shoots from the left side onto Onodi’s tight corner.
But the ball hits the outside of the net.

    ASTON VILLA 1-4 LIVERPOOL
83 Aston Villa’s youngsters are truly putting on a brave performance at Villa Park.
No one expected them to achieve much against Liverpool but are still showing true grit against arguably the best team in the country right now.
And they even got a goal!

    ASTON VILLA 1-4 LIVERPOOL
80 We’re closing in on full-time and Liverpool got exactly what they wanted.
The Reds have been dominating throughout the match, bar the last few minutes of the first half when Barry equalised.
But Aston Villa have nothing to be ashamed of.
They are missing their starting players and their youngsters are still giving it their all!

    ASTON VILLA 1-4 LIVERPOOL
78 But Liverpool’s comeback would probably never have happened if it wasn;t for Shaqiri.
    The post below explains why…:

2 – Xherdan Shaqiri is the first Liverpool player to assist two goals as a substitute since James Milner vs Spartak Moscow in December 2017 (3) and Shaqiri assisted those two goals within 208 seconds of coming off the bench. Impact. pic.twitter.com/tJyJivStfL
    — OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) January 8, 2021

    ASTON VILLA 1-4 LIVERPOOL
77 Liverpool were dealt with a scare just before half-time.
But this is how quickly they reacted:

4m 20s – There were just four minutes and 20 seconds between Liverpool’s second and fourth goals against Aston Villa. Clinical.

AC Milan vs Juventus LIVE: Stream, TV channel as Chiesa double inspires Juve in HUGE Serie A clash – latest updates

ITALIAN titans clash as AC Milan take on Juventus in one of the most enticing Serie A battles of the season.
Milan will be looking to keep their grip at the top of the league, with Juventus 10 points behind in seventh place.
    Start time: 8pm GMT
    TV/Live stream: LiveScore app
AC Milan XI: G Donnarumma; Dalot, Kjaer, Romagnoli, Theo Hernandez; Calabria, Kessie; Castillejo, Calhanoglu, Hauge, Leao
Juventus XI: Szczesny; Danilo, De Ligt, Bonucci, Frabotta; Chiesa, Bentancur, Rabiot, Ramsey; Dybala, Ronaldo

Follow ALL the action with our live blog below…

    AND THAT’S ALL FROM MILAN!
Juventus ended AC Milan’s undefeated streak thanks to a 3-1 victory at the San Siro.
Juve needed a win to catch up to Serie A leaders Milan and made their intentions known early.
The visitors opened the scoring with Federico Chiesa, who buried the ball in Gianluigi Donnarumma’s bottom right corner following a beautiful back-heel flick by Paulo Dybala after just 18 minutes.
Milan, though, pushed for an equaliser and were denied by an impressive Wojciech Szczesny.
Szczesny, though, couldn’t get a clean sheet as the Rossoneri levelled things up after 41 minutes with a beautiful finish by Davide Calabria; Juventus, though, claimed the goal shouldn’t have been allowed as Adrien Rabiot was fouled by Hakan Calhanoglou beforehand.
But that didn’t cost the Bianconeri as they regained the lead with Chiesa after 62 minutes thanks to another assist by Dybala.
Milan worked hard on another equaliser but Weston McKennie ended their hopes with a marvellous goal which sealed their first Serie A loss of the season.
Thank you for following the action with us and hope you have a great night!

    PIOLI REACTS
AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli believes his team lost because he was missing seven important players and Wojciech Szczesny put together an incredible performance.
Pioli told Sky Sports: “The game was balanced.
“We did what we had to do, after the 2-1 the game was addressed. The team interpreted the game generously, with quality, not we managed to take advantage of some high recovery on some good pressure and then Szczesny had a good game.
“The episode of the second goal changed the game. Seven absences would have been a lot for everyone but we have not lost our identity. ”

    PIRLO ON REF
Juventus manager Andrea Pirlo is pleased with his team’s 3-1 victory over AC Milan.
But Pirlo believes the referee should have disallowed Milan’s goal because Adrien Rabiot was fouled by Hakan Calhanoglou at the build-up.
The Juve boss told Sky Sports: “The foul on Rabiot has to be whistled, the game must be stopped.
“Then the team’s mistakes come, Danilo could have been more aggressive, he must be ready to make a preventive but we weren’t all in great shape.”

    PIRLO ON CHIESA
Juventus manager Andrea Pirlo praised Federico Chiesa following a brilliant performance that saw him scoring a brace.
Pirlo believes Chiesa showed exactly why Juve signed him in the summer and that is because he is brilliant in one-on-one challenges.
The Juventus boss told Sky Sports: “We bought him for one-on-one in the last 30 metres, his role is where he played today.
“Sometimes he played on the left but that’s what we want from him.”

    END OF THE LINE
Tonight’s result marked AC Milan’s first loss of the season following a brilliant start, which saw them remain undefeated for 15 consecutive matches.
But Milan’s impressive run kicked off last season as before their loss to Juventus no one was able to beat them for a whopping 27 consecutive matches in the Serie A.
The streak is over but the Rossoneri could take comfort from the fact that tonight marked the 36th straight match in which they scored.
Not the best outcome for Milan but they remain in first place and pose as legit title contenders!

    UPDATED TABLE
Juventus have moved up to fourth place and are now seven points away from Serie A leaders AC Milan.
Juve have a game in hand as they still need to play that match against Napoli, which was previously cancelled due to coronavirus regulations.
It seems like there will be an exciting title race if the Bianconeri show consistency within the next few weeks.
But Inter Milan and Roma, who are second and third respectively, can’t be ruled out…

    STATS
Juventus controlled 57.5 per cent of possession throughout the encounter, and that seems to have been the key to their success as they barely left any spaces for AC Milan to exploit in the second half.
Juve had 14 shots, six of which were on target, whereas Milan produced 20 shots, with eight of them being on target.
Gianluigi Donnarumma conceded three goals at the San Siro but Wojciech Szczesny was busier as he had to make eight saves, compared to his counterpart’s three.
Juventus were impressive, but it could have been a completely different result if it wasn’t for Szczesny

    FT: AC MILAN 1-3 JUVENTUS
Juventus picked up a big win over Serie A leaders AC Milan, who experienced their first league loss of the season.
Juve emerged victorious following an incredible encounter which could have gone either way if it wasn’t for an unplayable Federico Chiesa.
Chiesa opened the scoring after just 18 minutes when Paulo Dybala set him up in front of Gianluigi Donnarumma with a beautiful back flip.
But Milan managed to equalise before half-time with a marvellous shot by Davide Calabria on the 41st minute; the visitors complained about a foul on Adrien Rabiot by Hakan Calhanoglu at the build-up of the hosts’ goal.
But Juventus regained their lead again with Chiesa who fired a cool shot past Donnarumma thanks to another assist by Dybala after 62 minutes.
Milan fought tooth and nail for another equaliser but Weston McKennie sealed a famous win with powerful finish from inside the box following a beautiful pass by Dejan Kulusevski on the 76th minute

    16 Mendy; Azpilicueta (c), 15 Zouma, 6 Silva, 21 Chilwell; 17 Kovacic, 7Kante, 19 Mount; 22 Ziyech, 11 Werner, 10 Pulisic.

    THE TEAM SHEETS ARE IN!

    WINNING START
Manchester City have won their first league game in 13 of the last 14 calendar years (L1), winning each of the last eight in a row since a 0-1 loss at Sunderland in 2012.

    TOP W-EARNER
Kai Havertz and Timo Werner top Chelsea’s top earners list, and both are yet to find their feet in the Premier League.
Boss Frank Lampard has no concerns over the pair, and believes they’re both settling into life at Chelsea well.
When talking about Werner, Lampard said: “I think he’s come into this league, he’s made a big impact straight away.
“His speed, his direct nature, things he’s creating for the team, the fact he’s getting lots of chances, he makes lots of chances through his explosive nature and his eye to be in the right areas.
“And that I love. I’ve got no worries about him. Timo’s going to be a huge player for this club.
“He’s scored some goals already. Of course he’ll want to score more and he’s missed a couple but keep getting there and he’ll score those goals.
“So I just think it’s a small moment as all strikers have and I have no worries.”
And on Havertz, he said: “Long-term, I’ve got absolutely no worries about Kai – in fact it’s the opposite. I know he’s going to be a huge player for this football club, in the Premier League.
“He has all the attributes, all the personality, all the attitude and he’s going to be an absolutely top-class player for me, in the Premier League and in the world.
“That’s how highly I rate him. There are very quick reactions sometimes to how people analyse new signings with price tags etcetera.
“I think we have to understand that some of the best players to have graced the Premier League found it hard to get used to it and I think Kai has actually been very good and Covid has made it difficult for him.”

Chelsea have won their last two Premier League home games against Manchester City, last winning more consecutively against them at Stamford Bridge between 2006-2009 (4).
Man City have only failed to score in one of their last 12 Premier League meetings with Chelsea (0-2 in December 2018), with the Citizens also keeping five clean sheets in this run.
None of the last 10 Premier League meetings between Chelsea (4 wins) and Man City (6 wins) have finished level, with the home side winning each of the last five in the competition.

    BLUES PREDICTION
Here’s how we think Chelsea could line-up against Man City.

    GOOD AFTERNOON
And welcome to the live blog for Chelsea vs Manchester City!
The Blues start of 2021 with a massive Premier League clash against top four rivals Man City.
Both sides are looking to start off the new year with a win, which would keep them within touching distance of league leaders Liverpool.
Chelsea’s last match came against league high-flyers Aston Villa who held them to a draw and for City, they last featured on Boxing Day in a comfortable victory over Newcastle.
Despite both Kai Havertz and Timo Werner struggling to hold down first-team places, only Liverpool (37) have scored more than Chelsea this season (31).
It’s never good to get hit with a mid-season Covid-19 outbreak within the squad, and Man City’s last fixture which was meant to be against Everton got called off as a result.
Pep Guardiola’s City have struggled in front of goal this season, only scoring 21 goals (lowest amount in the top half of the table).
And Sergio Aguero as well as Jesus are struggling to make an impact.
However, on the flip side, City have conceded the fewest amount of goals (12) in the league this season with Ruben Dias forming quite the partnership with John Stones.
It’ll be interesting to see what side Guardiola fields today, and who is missing!
The full team news should be out in about half an hour’s time, so don’t go anywhere!
