Burnley 0 Man Utd 1 LIVE REACTION: Pogba sends Red Devils TOP of the Premier League after late winner at Turf Moor

PAUL POGBA was the Manchester United hero as the Frenchman fired in a late winner to send the Red Devils top.
Final score: Burnley 0-1 Man Utd
Follow all the reaction with our live blog below…

    GOODNIGHT FROM TURF MOOR
Manchester United are back on top of the Premier League.
It’s been eight years since the Red Devils last lauded it from the summit of English football at this stage of a season, and they couldn’t have timed their rise any better.
Ahead of Sunday’s showdown against Liverpool, three points now separate the north-west rivals as they prepare to go head-to-head.
Paul Pogba was United’s matchwinner at Turf Moor, netting a deflected second half volley to cap a classy performance in midfield.
Burnley battled hard, starting and finishing the contest with typical gusto, but United dominated for long periods and deserved victory in a game not short on incident.
The scoreline could have perhaps been different had Luke Shaw been shown red for a first half challenge that occurred during a spell of play that saw Robbie Brady booked, almost sent off and then reprieved of his caution.
But any other result would have been harsh on United, who felt aggrieved at the ruling out of a fine Harry Maguire header.
Both Pogba and his manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, were typically tight-lipped about title talk at full time, insisting the United squad were remaining grounded – yet you got the impression that thoughts had already turned to the weekend
So, on Sunday, it will be the champions against the league leaders. It will be Liverpool against Manchester United. And we cannot wait.
    Until then, goodnight.

    THE TABLE
Here’s how the top six of the Premier League table looks this evening.
Liverpool face Manchester United at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

    POGBA REACTION
Man of the Match Paul Pogba insists that Manchester United are staying grounded despite moving to the top of the Premier League table tonight.

The game today was very hard. We know it’s not easy to play here, but we got the three points and we’re very happy. There’s still a long way to go so we have to focus again, and until the end of the season.

    POG’S OWN WORK
Manchester United’s Paul Pogba was immense this evening, particularly in the second period, and deserved his decisive goal.

    FT: BURNLEY 0-1 MAN UTD
United go three points clear at the top of the Premier League thanks to Paul Pogba’s second half strike.

PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!IT’S ALL OVER AND MANCHESTER UNITED ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE!

    BURNLEY 0-1 MAN UTD
90+5. Now Matic is down, and nursing his groin. He may just be eating up a few more seconds, but this is not the way Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would have wanted to play out the final minutes.

    BURNLEY 0-1 MAN UTD
90+3. Martial should seal the victory when one-on-one with Pope, but fluffs his shot straight at the Burnley keeper.
In the aftermath, Martial hobbles a way holding his hamstring and appears hurt. He’s quickly replaced by Tuanzebe, but that could be a huge blow ahead of the Liverpool game on Sunday.

    BURNLEY 0-1 MAN UTD
    90. Four minutes of stoppage time are signalled by the fourth official, just as another mad scramble takes place in the United penalty area.
Tawkowski looks a certainty to score, but fluffs his connection from point blank range, and then Mee and Shaw clash heads as they both throw themselves at the loose ball. Pandemonium.

    BURNLEY 0-1 MAN UTD
    88. Jay Rodriguez is thrown as Burnley pack the area for the corner.
The delivery is launched into a crowd of bodies and, somewhere amongst them, there’s an arm involved. It’s Harry Maguire, and his hand did not look in a natural position.
VAR takes a second look and rule no penalty. It’s one of those that would have definitely been given three months ago.

    BURNLEY 0-1 MAN UTD
    87. Vydra! Side netting! The substitute was the late hero on Saturday with an equaliser and he nearly has another here.
Burnley burst down the right with Vydra dummying to set Westwood loose. The midfielder cuts the ball back, and there’s the Czech striker again with the strike.
It crashes off the diving Bailly and ripples the outside of the net. Corner.

    BURNLEY 0-1 MAN UTD
    85. Oooof! A loose header clear from Wan-Bissaka falls nicely for the arriving Brownhill just outside the box.
Cutting across the ball, the midfielder meets the clearance first time to send a fierce shot past the flat-footed De Gea – and wide of goal. Close!

    BURNLEY 0-1 MAN UTD
    82. Martial gets in behind, and senses another Turf Moor goal as he prepares to shoot at the near post.
The Frenchman is reckoning without James Tarkowski, however, and can only look on in shock as the Burnley defender throws himself in the way to brilliantly block.

    BURNLEY 0-1 MAN UTD
    80. A substitution apiece.
Mason Greenwood is on for Marcus Rashford while Matej Vydra comes on for Chris Wood.

    BURNLEY 0-1 MAN UTD
    78. Cavani looks riled up again, and uses his anger to good effect to dispossess Lowton.
He then finds Rashford, who has moved out to the left, but the attack breaks down after an exchange of one pass too many with Pogba.

    BURNLEY 0-1 MAN UTD
    76. Now Burnley pour forward. It takes alert defending from both Pogba and Bailly to head away two dangerous crosses in quick succession.
Meanwhile, at Molineux, Everton have regained the lead through Michael Keane. They lead Wolves 2-1.

    BURNLEY 0-1 MAN UTD
    74. Is Sean Dyche contemplating changes? He does have Matej Vydra and Jay Rodriguez on the bench.

    BURNLEY 0-1 MAN UTD
    71. Manchester United have the lead!
Paul Pogba has been the best player on the pitch this evening, and it’s no surprise that the Frenchman is the player to break the deadlock.
Marcus Rashford finds space on the right, and that allows him time to wait, weigh up his options, and then pick out Pogba on the edge of the box with a lofted cross.
The French midfielder’s connection is true, but the strike still needs a slight nick off Matthew Lowton to beat Nick Pope.
United are heading to the top of the Premier League table tonight!

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAALLLLLL!!PAUL POGBA VOLLEYS UNITED IN FRONT!!

    BURNLEY 0-0 MAN UTD
    69. Despite their strong start this evening, it’s been a long time since the Burnley forwards were in this game.
The home side have yet to register a shot on target this evening. It’s no surprise, they have had the fewest efforts on target in home Premier League games this season (20).

    BURNLEY 0-0 MAN UTD
    67. Cavani! Wide!
The corner causes confusion in the box as Lowton fails to properly clear, and that offers the striker the chance to take charge.
He shows great composure to skip back inside the Burnley defender, and then attempts a cheeky curler towards the far corner – to no avail.

    BURNLEY 0-0 MAN UTD
    66. Better from Rashford as he drives down the right.
He toys with Pieters, not once, but twice, and then drives a cross into the box that Brownhill does well to head behind.

The fourth round is scheduled to take place over the weekend of January 23.
The fifth round is set to take place during midweek – on Wednesday, February 10.

    ALL GONE PETE TONG
Liverpool fans wouldn’t have been thanking former star Peter Crouch for drawing them away to Manchester United in the FA Cup fourth round.
But fans of Chelsea, among others, couldn’t have been happier to see the Premier League’s leaders drawn together.
Meanwhile the Blues were handed a home tie against Luton.

    POWERFUL SERG
Sergio Reguilon showed his humble side as he offered a signed shirt to Marine’s Josh Hmami, tweeting “football is way more than just fancy stadiums”.
And having embraced the FA Cup in such a big way in his debut season, the Spaniard will surely be hoping to be picked for their fourth round tie away to Gareth Ainsworth’s Wycombe at Adams Park.

It was a great experience for us as well. Football is way more than just fancy stadiums ⚽️❤️. It will be my pleasure to sign it for you 🤝 https://t.co/POO7fFT1CB

ALWAYS A PLEASURE, NEVER A CHOR
Chorley have announced that their limited edition FA Cup shirt from the third round win over Derby has almost sold out following unprecedented demand.
But fans unable to get their jersey should get another chance as they face Premier League Wolves in round four.
And there’s no telling how far sales could go if they manage to upset Nuno’s men and set up a potential fifth round tie against Arsenal.

Due to unprecedented demand, our special (& limited) edition #FACup Chorley vs Derby shirt is NEARLY SOLD OUT!We only have XS, S & M left. Grab yours now before they go.Thank you for all of your amazing support! 👊 pic.twitter.com/Ka2h5xJPGm

    ROCKET RACKET
This is the moment West Ham’s FA Cup tie at Stockport tonight was interrupted by an impromptu fireworks display outside the ground.
But Mike Dean and Mark Noble seemed to take a light-hearted approach and enjoy the spectacle.
It later turned out that the display was a gesture of support to a 15-year-old fan who had been run over by a police car responding to a 999 call on Boxing Day.
West Ham ultimately ran out 1-0 winners through a late header from Craig Dawson, setting up a fourth round tie at home to Doncaster.

    LUCK OF THE DRAW
Manchester City will fancy their chances of going far in the FA Cup after being drawn against League Two Cheltenham Town away.
And many on Twitter were keen to point out theyears of enviable draws Pep Guardiola’s men have had in the competition.
In fact, since Guardiola took charge of City in 2016, they have only played a top six team twice – both semi-finals against Arsenal.

    PULL UP A CHAIR
Wycombe faced Tottenham at the same stage in the FA Cup just four years ago, and it was an epic.
The Chairboys – then in League Two – looked like they were about to pull off a huge upset when they went into half time 2-0 up.
And despite Son Heung-min and Vincent Janssen levelling the scores, Garry Thompson came off the bench to put them ahead again going into the dying minutes.
But goals from Dele Alli in the 89th minute and an incredible 97th minute winner from Son ensured it was Spurs who progressed.

    TIPPING HIS HAT
It wasn’t just Chorley who were handed an exciting FA Cup fourth round tie.
Luton Town are off to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea in round four.
And boss Nathan Jones said: “It’s a great draw against a wonderful Premier League side. We love testing ourselves and this will be a massive, massive test.
“We are delighted we avoided someone else from our league and it gives us something different to experience.
“To go to such a prestigious Premier League club will be a special occasion which we’ll be looking forward to.”

    LIV AND KICKING
Football fans will be treated to two straight weeks of Man Utd vs Liverpool.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men visit Anfield this Sunday at 4.30pm for a huge title clash.
And the FA Cup fourth round draw has ensured they will do it all again the following weekend at Old Trafford in the FA Cup.

    PEEEEP! THAT’S FULL TIME!
West Ham edge past Stockport 1-0 to set up a fourth round tie with Doncaster Rovers.
The winner of that game will then face either Manchester United or Liverpool in the fifth round.

    DEADLOCK BROKEN
Here is a look at the West Ham opener.

    GOOOAAAALLL!
It’s taken West Ham United the best part of 83 minutes, but the Hammers have finally taken the lead against Stockport.
Craig Dawson has headed David Moyes’ side in front at Edgeley Park.

    CHORLEY REACTION
Chorley boss Jamie Vermiglio had this to say on his side’s fourth round tie with Wolves:
“That is what we really wanted, Premier League opposition.
“And there is a bit of history because in 1986 Chorley played Wolves at home and beat them 3-0.
“So we just need to do that again. It is a big draw for everyone. I am made up with that.”

    SLIPPERY STOCKPORT
Stockport’s clash with West Ham has a proper Sunday League feel about it, with the boggy pitch making this a proper cup tie.
There’s just over fifteen minuted left to play with extra time looming.

    STOCKPORT COUNTY 0-0 WEST HAM
There’s less than half an hour left to play in the tie between Stockport and West Ham, with the score still 0-0.
The longer it stays level, the more Stockport will fancy their chances of nicking a result.

    FIFTH ROUND DRAW
And here’s the fifth round draw in full.
Fulham or Burnley v AFC Bournemouth or Crawley Town
Manchester United or Liverpool v Stockport County or West Ham United or Doncaster Rovers
Sheffield United or Plymouth Argyle v Millwall or Bristol City
Chorley or Wolverhampton Wanderers v Southampton or Shrewsbury Town or Arsenal
Barnsley or Norwich City v Chelsea or Luton Town
Everton or Sheffield Wednesday v Wycombe Wanderers or Tottenham Hotspur
Swansea City or Nottingham Forest v Cheltenham Town or Manchester City
Brentford or Leicester City v Brighton & Hove Albion or Blackpool

    FOURTH ROUND DRAW
In case you missed it, here’s a look at the fourth round draw in full.
    Cheltenham Town v Manchester City
    AFC Bournemouth v Crawley Town
    Swansea City v Nottingham Forest
    Manchester United v Liverpool
Southampton or Shrewsbury Town v Arsenal
    Barnsley v Norwich City
    Chorley v Wolverhampton Wanderers
    Millwall v Bristol City
Brighton & Hove Albion v Blackpool
    Wycombe Wanderers v Tottenham Hotspur
    Fulham v Burnley
    Sheffield United v Plymouth Argyle
    Chelsea v Luton Town
Stockport County or West Ham United v Doncaster Rovers
    Brentford v Leicester City
    Everton v Sheffield Wednesday

    LAST TIME OUT
Tottenham and Wycombe have recent FA Cup history, with the two sides meeting in the fourth round four years ago.
It was an absolute belter of a game, with Wycombe leading until the 89th minute before goals from Dele Alli and a 97th minute Son Heung-Min winner sent the Chairboys crashing out 4-3.

    BUZZING
Here’s a look at some reaction from the Wycombe Wanderers camp after the Chairboys were drawn against Tottenham in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

    HALF TIME
The half time whistle has just gone, with the deadlock yet to be broken in Stockport.
There’s 86 places between the sides in the football league, but it’s currently Stockport County 0-0 West Ham.
Could we have another FA Cup shock on our hands?

    CAN’T HELP BUT WATCH
A first half firework display outside Edgeley Park momentarily delayed Stockport County’s FA Cup third round clash with West Ham.
Mark Noble and Mike Dean couldn’t miss out the display.

    WE MEET AGAIN
Jose Mourinho returns to Wycombe Wanderers, this time with Spurs, fourteen years after he failed to beat the Chairboys at Adams Park with his star-studded Chelsea side.
Wycombe held Chelsea to a 1-1 draw in the League Cup semi-final, before losing the second leg 4-0 at Stamford Bridge.

    OPTIMISTIC
Shrewsbury Town’s path to the FA Cup quarter finals is a tricky one, but the clubs Twitter account seems optimistic that the League One side can get the job done.
The Shrews are still to play their third round tie against Southampton after the initial fixture was postponed due to a coronavirus outbreak, and would then face Arsenal in the fourth round should they beat the Saints.
Following that, a fifth round tie would be against the winners of the fiurth round game Chorley and Wolves.

    OLD FOES
Chorley and Wolves famously met in the FA Cup first round in 1986, after Wolves had fallen to the fourth tier after successive relegations.
The original tie at Chorley ended 1-1 before another 1-1 draw at Molineux.
The teams then faced off in a second replay at a neutral venue, Burnden Park in Bolton, with Chorley eventually running out 3-0 winners.

    BIGGER FISH TO FRY
Chorley were originally scheduled to host Gateshead in the National League North on January 23.
Instead they now host Premier League and Europa League quarter finalists Wolves in the fourth round of the FA Cup…

    FOURTH ROUND TIES
Swansea host Nottingham Forest, with Barnsley to face Norwich in another all Championship match.
Millwall have been handed a home clash against Bristol City, while Brighton host Blackpool.
Sheffield United reached the quarter-finals last season, and Plymouth now stand in their way in their quest to reach the latter stages yet again.
The winner of either Stockport or West Ham face Doncaster, with Brentford tasked with knocking out Leicester.

Follow ALL the action with our live blog below…

    THAT’S ALL FOR TONIGHT
Tottenham are into the fourth round of the FA Cup, and Marine’s fairytale comes to an end.
The football community coming together to support Marine IS and SHOULD be the story, it’s always nice to see some humanity!
    Goodnight!

    VINI VIDI VICI
Plenty of us have imagined that if a Jose Mourinho team was playing in our back garden, we would draw the curtains.
Not so the back-garden army who watched from treetops, ladders, shed roofs and verandas as Tottenham ran riot at Marine’s Rossett Park.
There was even a cardboard cut-out of Jurgen Klopp peering over the fence of one of the houses which back on to the Merseyside home of the Northern Premier League Division One North West club.
But if the setting had been perfect for the quintessential FA Cup upset, then Mourinho’s men were in no mood to be the bumbling anti-heroes of some romantic comedy.

    MOURINHO SPEAKS
Speaking after his team brushed aside non-league side Marine in the FA Cup, Mourinho praised 16-year-old Alfie Devine after the youngster scored on his debut.
Mourinho said: “Alfie is a good young player with good potential that came to the club only this summer.
“He was lucky enough to have pre-season with us which gave him a close contact with the first team. He’s not a stranger to us.
“Plays for various youth teams and sometimes comes to us to train. International youth players as well.
“So good progress. A player with instinctive runs into the finishing areas. We like him”
And on the topic of Dele Alli, he said: “I liked [Dele] very much. He and Gedson were responsible for our dynamic from the first minutes.
“Creating for us and causing problems for them and goals for us. Of course our creative players were a bit worried about the pitch.”

    CLASS
At the final whistle, Joe Hart went straight over to Marine keeper Bayleigh Passant. A lot of respect on display.

    YOUNG SPEAKS
Marine boss Neil Young spoke to the BBC after the game: “I’m very proud of the players. It was always gonna be tough – you only have to look at the Spurs side.
“You have to give great credit to Jose Mourinho for the side he picked. He showed us great respect.
“At the end we were laughing about [which superstar] would be coming off the bench next.
“It would have been nice to get a goal. Neil hit the bar and James Joyce had a shot blocked, but once they went ahead they showed their class.
“I’m very proud of the cup run. We’ve had an eventful week, with lot of press and attention.
“The football community, and in particular the Tottenham Hotspur supporters, have been incredible.
“To sell over 20,000 [virtual] tickets in what is a very tough time for our football club … it’s really nice.”

    FULL-TIME STATS
Spurs dominated the game from minute one, but Marine in their own right made it incredibly difficult.

Marine changed shape in the second half bringing on an attacker for a defender and it changed their approach in the final third.
Spurs continued to stretch the game down both wide channels, and had a lot of joy in behind the wing-backs.

Marine defended valiantly but narrowly, and Spurs had a lot of joy in the wide areas as a result.

    FT: MARINE 0-5 TOTTENHAM
A very professional and respectful performance from Spurs.
And Marine in their own right were outstanding, they tried to make it difficult for Spurs.
Life-long memories have been made tonight for Marine’s players, staff and supporters.
16-year-old Alfie Devine made history in his own right, scoring on his debut becoming Spurs’ youngest ever goalscorer.

    PEEEEEEP!
THE FULL-TIME WHISTLE GOES AT ROSSETT PARK!

    MARINE 0-5 TOTTENHAM
    90+1. WHAT. A. MISS!
Lovely bit of play from Spurs as Devine is released down the right-hand side.
He squares the ball to Vinicius who spins and sends his effort wide of the post!
The Brazilian has to hit the target from there!

    MARINE 0-5 TOTTENHAM
    90. Two additional minutes at the end of the second half!

    MARINE 0-5 TOTTENHAM
    88. Vinicius takes the long route round and he manages to get to the by-line before placing his cross right into the arms of Passant.
The Brazilian has to do better.

    MARINE 0-5 TOTTENHAM
    87. Reguilon tries to get away from Davies, but the Marine right-back comes out on top and wins his side a goal-kick.

    MARINE 0-5 TOTTENHAM
    85. Clarke combines well with Reguilon down the left-hand side.
Clarke cuts inside onto his right foot and clips the ball towards the far post but Marine clear the danger.

    MARINE 0-5 TOTTENHAM
    82. Fernandes leads the counter attack for Spurs, he has Clarke to his left and Bale to his right.
The midfielder opts for Bale, but the ball is intercepted allowing Marine to get numbers back.

    MARINE 0-5 TOTTENHAM
    81. Reguilon gets to the by-line and floats the ball towards the far post, picking out Devine.
The ball is worked across the box and Clarke is slipped in behind the Marine backline, but the the ball goes out of play for a goal-kick.

    MARINE 0-5 TOTTENHAM
    80. Danny Shaw is on for Raven.
Cardboard Jurgen Klopp and his friend give Raven a round of applause as he leaves the pitch!

    MARINE 0-5 TOTTENHAM
    78. Just over ten minutes to go at the end of the second half and Spurs are cruising.
Despite the result, Marine should be proud of themselves. They’ve shown a lot of grit and determination.

    MARINE 0-5 TOTTENHAM
    77. Joyce is the first man in the book for a challenge on Gedson.

    MARINE 0-5 TOTTENHAM
    75. Spurs have extended their dominance on the ball, seeing 74 per cent compared to 72 per cent at the end of the first half.

    MARINE 0-5 TOTTENHAM
    74. Double change for Marine as Devine and Cummins make way for Strickland and Wignall.

    MARINE 0-5 TOTTENHAM
    72. Spurs win the ball back and it’s played into the path of Bale who is operating in a more central position behind the striker.

    MARINE 0-5 TOTTENHAM
    71. Marine are enjoying a good spell of possession, they’re keeping it simple.

    STAT ATTACK
Chelsea enjoyed a whopping 84.5 per cent of the possession.
However, they only managed eight shots on target.

    FULL TIME SCORES
    Chelsea 4-0 Morecambe
    Crawley 3-0 Leeds
    Bristol City 2-1 Portsmouth
    Barnsley 2-0 Tranmere
    Manchester City 3-0 Birmingham
Extra time in Cheltenham, as the score there is Cheltenham 1-1 Mansfield

    FT: CHELSEA 4-0 MORECAMBE

    CHELSEA 4-0 MORECAMBE
    91. Morecambe have hung in there pretty well against some of the biggest names in thee game.
The score line doesn’t reflect their decent defending today.

    CHELSEA 4-0 MORECAMBE
    91. Chelsea’s unbeaten run at this stage in the FA Cup extenmds to 23 seasons.
The last team to knock them out at this stage was Manchester United.

    CHELSEA 4-0 MORECAMBE
    90. Chelsea are in action against Fulham next, while Morecambe are in London again to face Leyton Orient.

    CHELSEA 4-0 MORECAMBE
    90. Two minutes of added time at Stamford Bridge.

    CHELSEA 4-0 MORECAMBE
    88. Tomori is penalised for a foul on Lyons.
The Chelsea man loses the ball and shows some real pace chasing Lyons down- it looks like a decent challenge to me.

    CHELSEA 4-0 MORECAMBE
    86. Substitution for Morecambe as McAlinden replaces Stockton.

    CHELSEA 4-0 MORECAMBE
    85. Chelsea comfortably through to round four with their fourth goal.
A lovely delivery from the right, courtesy of Azpilicueta, picks out Havertz perfectly in the six-yard box.
Havertz is up and heads the ball with plenty of conviction into the back of the net.
A much better header from Havertz than his first-half effort – that should give him plenty of confidence.

    GOOOOOAL
HAVERTZ HAS GOT HIS NAME ON THE SCORESHEET

    CHELSEA 3-0 MORECAMBE
    83. Another Morecambe sub is flicking through their red-folder.
Either he’s choosing his post-match dinner, or checking the game plan…

    CHELSEA 3-0 MORECAMBE
    81. Gilmour, who’s always busy and always probing, picks up a loose ball in the centre of the field.
He sends a perfectly weighted pass to the edge of the area, but Pulisic gives the ball away with his first touch.

    CHELSEA 3-0 MORECAMBE
    80. Anjorin has been with Chelsea since he was seven.
Can he make his mark today?

    CHELSEA 3-0 MORECAMBE
    78. Frank Lampard looks as though he’ll be making the most of the five substitutions which are allowed in the FA Cup.
Zouma and Hudson-Odoi are replaced by Anjorin and Tomori.

    CHELSEA 3-0 MORECAMBE
    77. Yellow card for Gibson after a late tackle on Hudson-Odoi.
    Nothing too sinister.

    CHELSEA 3-0 MORECAMBE
    76. Delivery into the penalty area from Gibson on the right is decent.
Just a shame that there’s no one in the centre of the box to meet his cross- instead Arrizabalaga collects.

    CHELSEA 3-0 MORECAMBE
    75. Morecambe win a freekick in Chelsea’s half, it’s about 30 yards out.
It’s whipped in to the centre of the box where Davis gets up to greet it, but his header is straight at Arrizabalaga.

    CHELSEA 3-0 MORECAMBE
    74. Morecambe make a substitution of their own as Lyons comes on for his debut replacing Mendes Gomes.

    CHELSEA 3-0 MORECAMBE
    72. Corner to Chelsea is whipped in to the centre of the box by Mason Mount, but Olivier Giroud heads it over the bar.
That’s Mount’s final touch of the game, as Tammy Abraham replaces him.

    CHELSEA 3-0 MORECAMBE
    70. BLOCKED ON THE LINE BY HALSTEAD!
A lovely bit of build-up play sees every attacking player in Chelsea’s line-up touch the ball in and around the box.
Mount’s twinkle toes ensure Chelsea hold onto the ball that smidge longer than they probably should have, but it was Havertz who eventually had the shot at goal.
Halstead blocked it well with an athletic leap and recovered quickly to block the German international’s second attempt from close range.

    CHELSEA 3-0 MORECAMBE
    69. As a League Two defender, it’s not every day you come up against a World Cup winner as they do today in the shape of Olivier Giroud.
Chelsea have had huge amounts of possession, but Morecambe have limited them to only a few opportunities in front of goal.

    CHELSEA 3-0 MORECAMBE
    67. Double substitution for Chelsea;
Olivier Giroud is on for Timo Werner.
While Ziyech’s game is over, Pulisic is on in his place.

Scott McTominay’s early header was enough to secure Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men a spot in Monday’s draw.
    RESULT: Man Utd 1-0 Watford
Man Utd XI: Henderson, Telles, Bailly, Tuanzebe, Williams, Lingard, Willianms, Van de Beek, McTominay, James, Greenwood

    THAT’S ALL FROM OLD TRAFFORD
Manchester United bounced back from Wednesday’s disappointment to seal their place in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 1-0 victory of Watford.
While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made a host of changes to his starting line-up, he kept faith with one outfield player in the heart of his midfield.
Wearing the captain’s armband for the first time, Scott McTominay rose to the challenge – and rose highest to head in the game’s only goal after just five minutes.
Yet, after an impressive opening quarter, Solskjaer’s stand-ins faded and offered Watford a glimpse of causing a cup shock.
However, in a tie littered with poorly-executed free-kicks, neither side could find the game’s second goal.
So while it’s United that progress, both clubs will be pleased just to get through the tie unscathed, and will now return to the main focus of their seasons.
For Watford, that means success in the Championship and sealing an immediate return to the Premier League.
For United, that means knocking Liverpool off their perch.
    Thanks for reading and goodnight.

    SOLSKJAER SPEAKS
Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer has reacted to his side’s victory this evening, praised the performance of his stand-in captain and issued an update on Eric Bailly’s injury.
“I’m delighted we are through. I told them I didn’t expect to start like a house on fire, I expected them to grow into the game, but the opposite happened. We played some very good stuff, created chances and then we let them back into the game.

The most important thing in the cup is that you go through so everyone will be happy, but the first 15-20 minutes were the highlights of our game.
    Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

“Scott [McTominay] has had a very good season. He’s being more and more dangerous, we know he can be a box-to-box midfielder. He should have scored a few more on set-plays before now because he is a monster of a human being. I am very happy he got the goal.
“[Eric Bailly had] no concussion, he had a sore neck. He couldn’t carry on so we’ll check on him tomorrow.”

    GIANTS PROGRESS
Manchester United have avoided a giant killing this evening – as is their wont.

47 – Manchester United have been successful in 47 of their last 48 FA Cup ties against sides from a lower division, progressing from each of their last 17 since losing against Leeds in January 2010. Bullies. #MUNWAT

    CAPTAIN SCOTT
Scott McTominay has been speaking of his pride at captaining Manchester United, and his relief at getting the job despite a below-par second half.
“We started really well and for the first half hour we were really good. And then we didn’t find it after that. In the second half, we didn’t play anywhere near to our level.
“For the boys coming into the team, it’s difficult. They haven’t played for a long time.

When the manager told me [I was captain], it was a surreal moment. I’ve been at this club since I was five-years-old so it’s a huge honour. I love this football club and it’s been my whole life.
    Scott McTominay

“We have a lot of variations from set-pieces, but I need to start scoring a lot more headers, I’m six foot three.
“It’s a squad game so I’m sure there’ll be changes on Tuesday, and then changes again for Liverpool.”

    GREAT SCOTT
He captained Manchester United for the first time this evening, scored the only goal of the game, and received BT Sport’s Man of the Match award. Scott McTominay continues to blossom in the Red Devils’ midfield.

    FT: MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
It’s victory for the Premier League side as Scott McTominay’s early header saw off Watford of the Championship at Old Trafford. The Manchester United midfielder began the night as his side’s captain, was the best player on the pitch and netted the only goal of the game.

PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!IT’S ALL OVER AT OLD TRAFFORD!

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
90+4. On the subject of rubbish free-kicks, Navarro has just punted Watford’s last chance into Martial’s one-man wall.
Xisco Munoz should fine him a week’s wages.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    90+3. Mata! Curler! Over!

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
90+2. Martial wins a free-kick in the Watford half, and the home side will take their time.
It’s eventually played short with Martial involved again. He combines with Mata with the Spaniard ultimately trying to squirm through the Watford defence to no avail.
However, Andy Madley pulls the play back and awards the home side a free-kick 25 yards from goal.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    90. An aimless ball upfield from Williams travels through to Bachmann. In fairness to the young full-back, if Martial had done more than look at the pass it might not have been described as aimless.
Meanwhile, four added minutes are signalled by the fourth official.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    88. Hungbo has certainly put himself about since his introduction and now he wins a free-kick off Matic, near the touchline and in the final third.
Matic, meanwhile, pleads his innocence to the referee, but he needn’t have worry. Sema’s delivery is straight into the hands of Henderson.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    85. Do the Hornets have a sting in their tail? Their youngsters are trying to to find the goal that will force extra-time, and Hungbo is the latest to have a go.
The substitute cuts inside on the counter before his strike nicks off Maguire’s outstretched leg and goes behind.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    83. In trying to keep pace with Rashford, Nathaniel Chalobah appears to have tweaked his hamstring.
The Watford captain immediately signals to the bench before hobbling to the touchline. The armband is passed to Will Hughes as 19-year-old Daniel Phillips enters the fray.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    81. United fail to put the tie to bed with two quickfire chances.
First, Maguire fails to direct his header on target following a lovely delivery from Alex Telles, and then Rashford slammed a shot straight at Bachmann after a weaving run.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    78. Nemanja Matic is coming on for Jesse Lingard which should tell you a lot about how Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is preparing to tackle these final 12 minutes.
It should also tell you that Lingard’s time at Manchester United won’t last much longer.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    76. Another double switch from the Championship outfit.. Philip Zinckernagel’s Watford debut is over and he’s replaced by young Joseph Hungbo. Also off is William Troost-Ekong with Ben Wilmot taking over in defence.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    74. Watford come again and it requires another thumping header from Maguire to repel an attack, and then excellent tracking from McTominay to deny Zinckernagel the opportunity to cross.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    73. Sema looks to curl a wicked cross towards the back post but overhits his delivery and ends up setting the set-piece behind for a goalkick.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    72. It’s an all Brazilian affair as Alex Telles trips Joao Pedro on the right wing.
It’s a booking for the United left-back, and another dangerous free-kick to Watford.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    70. Two Watford corners in quick succession, taken by substitute Sema, are cleared at the near post by Maguire and then Rashford.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    68. The double change is made with Rashford and Martial on for James and Greenwood.
James has arguably been United’s brightest performer this evening, particularly from an attacking perspective.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    67. Here come the cavalry! Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are stripped and receiving their final instructions.

Rashford and Martial coming on with half an hour to go shows how badly some of these attackers of ours have performed! Not taken their chance
    — Mark Goldbridge (@markgoldbridge) January 9, 2021

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    65. A yellow card for Tuanzebe for kicking the ball away as Watford looked to take a quick set-piece. A very 1998 reason for receiving a booking.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WATFORD
    64. United are struggling to kill off Watford here to such an extent that even the artificial crowd noise that BT Sport are piping in appears to be that of a stadium growing restless.

    THAT’S ALL FOLKS!
Well well well. After 120 minutes of football, the game was finally decided thanks to extra time goals from Emile Smith-Rowe and Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang.
Both teams started off the first half well but apart from an Aubameyang sliced effort, not many chances were created.
Newcastle had the upper hand for the first 10 minutes of the second half until the introduction of Emile Smith-Rowe, Saka and Xhaka came on to change the game.
The Gunners then grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck but it was an Andy Carroll squandered opportunity which was the best chance of the half.
Emile Smith-Rowe saw a red card for a reckless challenge but it was rescinded after Chris Kavanagh realised the tackle wasn’t as bad as it seemed.
The youngster then found himself in the perfect position to put his side 1-0 up deep into extra time.
Newcastle had no time to reply and then to add insult to injury, Aubameyang wrapped up the tie with a tap in from close range.
Thank you for tuning in family, this was a long one.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

    STEVE BRUCE’S VIEWS
The Magpies head coach dwelling on the missed opportunities to win the game but still praising Carroll’s overall performance.
Bruce said: “The one thing you have to do is take your chances when they come along and there’s not going to be lots and lots of them of course.
“As for a cup tie, it could have went either way but we just rue the missed chances that we had but as I said when you come here, you don’t get a lot of them.
“I thought Andy did fantastically well and of course he would have topped it off by scoring a goal.
“It would have been good for him especially after scoring last week.”

MAY THE FOURTH BE WITH YOU
Now take a look at the goal which sealed Newcastle’s fate and officially put Arsenal through to the fourth round.

    DEADLOCK BROKEN
After 115 minutes of football Emile Smith-Rowe saved the day.

    SMITH-ROWE’S ANALYSIS
Man of the match, Emile Smith-Rowe discussing his eventful evening, Newcastle being tough opponents and the change in direction of Arsenal.
He said:“Yeah I was really happy. A bit of a relief for me because obviously like you said the incident before wasn’t ideal and it definitely wasn’t intentional, so I’m happy to get the goal and happy to go through to the next round.
“We knew coming into the game how tough it was going to be. We know that they are a strong opponent so it was just about breaking them down and in the end we got there.
“From a young kid I have always dreamt of playing for this club. All the young players it is good for us to get opportunities so yeah I am really happy to be playing for this club.
“I think it shows how together we are. We’ve been working off the pitch to get closer as a group and it’s starting to show on the pitch and as a group we are so happy to keep winning games.”

    PROGRESSION
Only Nottingham Forest in 2018 have stopped the Gunners from progressing to the fourth round in the FA Cup.
    That’s 24 out of 25!

24 – Arsenal have now progressed from 24 of their last 25 FA Cup third round ties, failing only against Nottingham Forest in 2018 in this run. Eventually. #ARSNEW

    FA CUP FLASHBACK
We have to rewind back to the year of 2008 when these two clubs last battled it out in the FA Cup. Arsenal fans, you can stop reading if you want but it was an Adebayor brace which helped the Gunners to secure a fifth round spot. I’m aware that he’s not quite a fan favourite anymore but he was influential in that particular match.
It was an end to end game with both sides having positive attacks early on. Eduardo thumped a half-volley towards the Newcastle net forcing a fine save from Shay Given and this came before Clichy almost put Fabregas through for a one-on-one but the Spaniard’s touch let him down.
Clichy was then called upon again but this time with a headed clearance off the line from an Alan Smith swivel and shot which left the Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehman completely beaten.
The deadlock was finally broken five minutes into the second half when an Eduardo effort clipped the post and Adebayor was present for the rebound to put Arsenal 1-0 up.
This gave Arsene Wenger’s team the lift they needed and they completely dominated the second half with pretty patterns of football in Wenger ball style.
Eventually the lead was doubled by that man Adebayor again after the Togolese international’s perfect positioning presented him the opportunity to fire the ball past a helpless Shay Given.
And the rout was completed when a Fabregas free-kick was inadvertently deflected off the head of Butt making it 3-0 in the closing stages of the second half putting any potential comeback completely beyond doubt.

    EMPTY EMIRATES
The fans might be absent but we are still in need of a fiery FA Cup fixture to heat up North London.

    GOOD AFTERNOON
Hi SunSport family, hope you are all good!
Anyone else ruined their New Year’s resolutions already like me? If you have don’t worry, there’s always 2022.
But anyways, onto more important things. Arsenal start their FA Cup defence this evening when they welcome Newcastle United to the Emirates.
If league form is anything to go by then the Gunners’ sudden turn of fortunes make them strong favourites in the bookmaker’s eyes to progress to the fourth round.
Mikel Arteta’s men have won their previous three matches on the bounce which includes an impressive 3-1 victory over London rivals Chelsea and a 4-0 hammering in the snow over West Brom last weekend.
These victories have propelled Arsenal from 15th position to 11th and I know Gooners, it may not look the best on paper but you are now only 6 points away from those prestigious Champions League spots so things are definitely looking up.
On the other hand, the Magpies suffered a 2-1 defeat to Leicester in their last Premier League outing which means despite holding the current Champions Liverpool to a goalless draw, they have now gone 5 Premier League games without a victory.
However this is the FA Cup, a competition full of shocks and surprises so stay tuned people and you’ll receive all the live updates right to your fingertips.
