THE FA Cup fifth round is in full swing with Manchester United pulling off an extra-time victory over West Ham.
Meanwhile Chelsea have discovered that they will play Atletico Madrid away in Bucharest, meaning five English clubs have now had their European ties moved.

    RAF AND READY
Napoli boss Gennaro Gattuso reportedly has two games to save his job with Rafa Benitez in the frame to take over for the rest of the season.
Gattuso’s side racked up their seventh Serie A defeat this season against Genoa on Saturday.
And the club sit in sixth place, 12 points behind pace-setters AC Milan but they do have a game in hand.
Italian paper La Gazzetta dello Sport, via Football Italia, reports Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis will weigh up Gattuso’s future on Saturday.
And Benitez could be set for a stunning Sao Paolo return after leaving Chinese side Dalian Professional last month.

    JONNY BE GOOD
Wolves wing-back Jonny has handed Nuno Espirito Santo his second boost of the week by signing a new four-and-a-half year deal.
The 26-year-old Spain international has been a huge miss after being sidelined for the past six months with a cruciate ligament injury he suffered against Olympiacos, which required surgery.
However Jonny made his long-awaited return for 45 minutes against Leicester City on Sunday.
And the defender played a huge part in earning his side a point with a heroic double-block to deny James Maddison a certain goal.

    PLAYER PROBE
Man Utd star Amad Diallo has been fined £42,000 amid an Italian immigration probe into his arrival in Europe.
SunSport revealed last year that the claims centred around a tip-off that the couple who brought the footballers over were not their real parents.
The documents used by the adults to claim parenthood were allegedly falsified.
The ‘family’ moved to Italy on a visa under the name Traore, which has since been ditched by the United winger.
Amad and brother Hamed, who plays for Serie A side Sassuolo, had DNA samples taken and were questioned by police along with several other linked parties.
And the Italian FA (FIGC) have decided to hand down a £42,000 fine to both players following their own investigation.

    TRAGIC LOSS
Jerome Boateng has left Bayern Munich’s Fifa Club World Cup squad after the tragic death of his ex-girlfriend.
The German champs confirmed the 32-year-old defender will not be available for Thursday’s Club World Cup final against Mexican side Tigres UANL.
Boss Hansi Flick revealed the former Manchester City centre-back will return to Munich from Qatar where the tournament is being staged for personal reasons.
Model Kasia Lenhardt was found dead in her Berlin apartment on Tuesday but police are not treating her death as suspicious.
Last week, Boateng announced he and mum-of-one Kasia, 25, had split after 15 months together.

    MADE HIS MARK
Chelsea flop Marko Marin has signed for his 11th career club.
The 31-year-old has joined Saudi Arabian side Al-Raed on loan until the end of the season from rivals Al-Ahli.
The winger, once known as the ‘German Messi’, left Chelsea back in 2016 following a disappointing four-year spell at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues were hoping they signed a hugely talented winger when they finalised a £6.5million deal to sign Marin from Werder Bremen in 2012.
But the former Germany International managed a measly 143 Premier League minutes in just six appearances.

    ‘HE’S INCREDIBLE’
Harry Redknapp reckons ‘incredible’ Jack Grealish deserves to be player of the year this season.
And the former Spurs and West Ham boss would pick the Aston Villa star over Phil Foden, James Maddison and Mason Mount in his England side.
He said: “I love to see teams go and attack and I love Jack Grealish. I’m a massive fan of his, I think he’s incredible.
“For me, I think he’s been the footballer of the year so far, if I was voting I’d pick him.
“He’s dragged Aston Villa up the league, he’s a massive part of what they’ve achieved this year.”

    STAT ATTACK
Real Madrid are reportedly preparing to sign either Kylian Mbappe or Erling Haaland this summer.
The two strikers are among the hottest talents in world football and are both tipped to be the long-term successor to Karim Benzema at the Bernabeu.
But who is enjoying the better season this term ahead of a proposed move to Real Madrid?
Well, it’s pretty close – but on paper, it’s Haaland… just.

    D’OR IS OPEN
Should Lionel Messi retire at Barcelona, he will become only the second Ballon d’Or winner to have stayed at the club after receiving the award.
At the moment, Florian Albert is the sole recipient to have been a one-club man after picking up the honour.
Albert’s record of playing for the same club after winning the Ballon d’Or rests on Messi’s future.
Messi handed in a transfer request at the Nou Camp in the summer as he was determined to leave.
But the six-time Ballon d’Or winner ended up staying put to avoid a drawn out legal battle in court.

    MONEY GOALS
Luis Suarez has already been paid a bonus thanks to his stunning form for Atletico Madrid.
The 33-year-old is La Liga’s top scorer with 16 goals in 17 games, and seven in his last four.
Mundo Deportivo report that the Uruguayan was paid a million Euros bonus (£880,000) for scoring 15 goals.
Suarez is also in line for another payout if and when he makes it to 20 goals, which seems like a formality.

    BARNSTORMING
Thomas Tuchel could be without a trio of forwards for Chelsea’s FA Cup trip to Barnsley.
Blues fans eagerly await the team news for Thursday night’s fifth-round clash, to get a glimpse at how seriously he will take the competition.
At Paris Saint-Germain, Tuchel would regularly introduce fringe first-team players into his cup sides and a similar route can be expected this week.
Here’s how SunSport’s Marc Mayo thinks Chelsea will start…

    LEGAL BATTLE
Premier League transfer target Thiago Almada has been charged with sexual assault in Argentina.
United reportedly lead the race for the Velez Sarsfield star, with Arsenal and Leeds also linked to the £22million-rated prospect.
But the 19-year-old has now been accused of assaulting a woman, together with his Velez clubmate Miguel Brizuela.
Almada is said to have had consensual sex with the 28-year-old at a party last December.
However Brizuela, 24, is reported to have then entered the bedroom before the woman was forced into sexual acts with several men.

    ‘MAKES ME FEEL SICK’
Scott McTominay is disgusted by the racial abuse that some of his Manchester United team-mates receive on social media.
Speaking on the club website, he said: “You can’t read too much or if there’s good articles about you, bad articles about you.
“You can’t dive into them with too much detail because you have to have a thick skin in football, as you see with what’s been going on with the racial abuse.
“It’s a disgrace and that’s the type of people who are on social media saying the things that they’re saying at this moment in time.
“Honestly, it makes me feel sick coming in seeing Axel the next day after the game. I don’t remember which game it was.
“But I feel like it’s an absolute shambles and that’s somebody, one of my brothers who I’ve grown up with for a long, long time now, and to see that happen to him is absolutely disgusting.”

    BREAKING NEWS
Jurgen Klopp has been left heartbroken after his beloved mum died aged 81.
The Liverpool boss will also be unable to attend the funeral due to Germany’s current coronavirus travel ban.

“She was a real mum in the best sense of the word. As a devout Christian, I know she is in a better place now.”

    BLANCOS HERO
Real Madrid legend Enrique Perez, or Pachin as he was affectionately known, has passed away at the age of 82.
The former defender had been battling illness for a number of years and entered hospital in the Spanish capital over a month ago, according to Marca.

    MAKING SHAW
Luke Shaw has opened up on his strained relationship with former boss Jose Mourinho and admitted he ‘had a very hard time’.
The left-back came in for regular criticism during Mourinho’s two-and-a-half years in charge at Old Trafford.
Speaking to the BBC before United’s 1-0 FA Cup win against West Ham, Shaw said: “It was a very hard time because sometimes I wasn’t able to get my word across or people were only hearing it from one side of the story.
“I knew at the time it was better just to keep quiet.
“A lot of people were behind me here so I knew I had the backing but I knew I needed to keep quiet and improve.
“I have gone through a lot which has made a better person.”

    RED LIST
Jurgen Klopp is braced for a squad clearout in the summer if his fringe players fail to deliver, according to reports.
Klopp’s fringe players are struggling to deliver in the absence of first team stars and many of them are likely to be up for grabs in the summer.
Xherdan Shaqiri is one name on the chopping block despite his regular cameos in the squad.
The Switzerland international hasn’t performed at a consistent level and has transfer interest from Germany.
According to The Athletic, other players fighting for their futures include midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

    RAPH DEAL
Leeds will reportedly make a move for Juventus’ out of favour Douglas Costa if they lose Raphina this summer.
France Football is reporting that Liverpool have put Raphina at the top of their shortlist.
While Leeds will be desperate to keep hold of the flying 24-year-old Brazilian, there could be a replacement in mind.
According to Fichjaes.net, Marcelo Bielsa could turn his attentions to Costa.

    LION IN WAIT
John Terry tipped Mason Mount to become captain of Chelsea and England.
And the legendary defender also hailed Jack Grealish and Phil Foden as the two ‘best young players in the world’.
Speaking on Instagram live, JT said: “Mason Mount is 100 per cent future Chelsea captain.
“He’s been the best player at Chelsea this season to be honest.
“He’s a great lad, trains unbelievably well, is Chelsea through and through and shows leadership qualities.
“In my mind he’ll be Chelsea and England captain.”

    PARTEY TIME
Arsenal star Thomas Partey is relishing the chance to play alongside his former LaLiga rival Martin Odegaard at the Emirates.
The Gunners beat off competition from top European clubs to secure the Norwegian on loan from Real Madrid until the end of the season.
Partey told Stadium Astro: “It’s difficult when you play against him.
“I remember playing against him, he’s so intelligent, he is always quick on the ball, he doesn’t give you a chance to win the ball.
“It’s amazing to have him here.
“I hope he has a great season and he’s able to help us achieve what we want to achieve.”

    EURO TRIP
Chelsea’s Champions League away tie with Atletico Madrid will be played in Romania.
Uefa have confirmed the match on February 17 will now be held at Bucharest’s Arena Nationala.
Spanish government Covid restrictions on travel from the UK meant that Thomas Tuchel’s squad were unable to fly to Madrid to play the La Liga leaders in the Wanda Metropolitano.
Atletico told Uefa that Bucharest was their preferred choice if a switch was necessary.

    AL OR NOTHING
Chelsea have reportedly pulled out of the race to sign David Alaba on a free transfer.
The Austrian defender, 28, is out of contract at Bayern Munich in the summer and looks set to leave for nothing.
But according to ESPN, his £400,000-a-week wage demands are simply too much for the Blues to pursue a deal any further.
Real Madrid look set to secure his services from the summer with a four-year contract understood to be agreed.

    SAFETY FIRST
Issa Diop became the first concussion sub in English football history on Tuesday night.
The West Ham star was subbed off in the FA Cup loss at Manchester United after a clash of heads.
Diop, who came on to replace injured Angelo Ogbonna in the 16th minute, collided with Anthony Martial.
He didn’t return for the second half as Ryan Fredericks replaced him.

    HERNAN PLAN

The ex-Chelsea striker took over at the Argentine outfit in January 2020 and led the to their first major silverware last month.
But he took to social media on Monday to confirm his departure.
And now Brazilian giants Sao Paulo seems the likely next step for the former striker.
He admitted in an interview this week he has held talks with the club – as well as two other teams.

Man Utd 1 West Ham 0 LIVE REACTION: Scott McTominay’s extra-time volley sends Utd to FA Cup quarter-finals – updates

MANCHESTER UNITED beat West Ham 1-0 in the 5th round of the FA Cup thanks to an extra-time goal from Scott McTominay.
RESULT: Man Utd 1-0 West Ham
Man Utd XI: Henderson, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Telles, Matic, Van De Beek, Fred, Greenwood, Martial, Rashford
West Ham XI: Fabianski, Coufal, Dawson, Ogbonna, Cresswell, Rice, Noble, Soucek, Fornals, Bowen, Yarmolenko
Follow ALL the action with our live blog below…

    GOODBYE!
Sorry it wasn’t the net-bulging, eyebrow-raising goal-fest we were all hoping for, but the two sides did their best for us.
In the end it was Scott McTominay’s extra-time volley which secured United a place in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
But a bit of a hapless night for the Hammers, who will be kicking themselves for failing to nab a striker in the January transfer window.
Oh well, they’ve always got the summer.
Have a good evening and we’ll catch you back here tomorrow evening for our coverage of Everton vs Tottenham!
    Night.

    OLE SPEAKS
It wasn’t the prettiest of victories tonight but Ole knows of the importance of bouncing back from Saturday’s draw with Everton.

“I felt we dominated. I thought we were in complete control of the first half.
“In the second half it became more of a game. When it’s only one nil and we are wasteful, anything can happen to us – we knew that from the last game [Everton]. It’s just about finishing the game off but we’re through. We’re in the hat and that’s what we wanted.
“I think we got about 15 to 17 shots in the end but we need to be more clinical. We should’ve finished the game off earlier and finished in 90 minutes but sometimes it doesn’t happen.
“We needed to have a good result and a good feeling after today because we were low after Everton game. It’s hard to take but they were really focused and did the job.
“Of course you want to win every game. We want to challenge and we want to go to the final. That’s what we’re here at Man United for. Sometimes you’re lucky with draw in the cup – we haven’t been that lucky – but obviously we move another step closer to the final.”

    ANOTHER LOOK
At the match-winning moment from Scott McTominay.
He’s emerged as an important cog in the Man Utd wheel and you suspect he’ll be a big part of Scotland’s Euros campaign in the summer too!

    LOOKING AHEAD
Manchester United reach the last-8 for the seventh consecutive season.
But who could they play in the quarter-finals? It’ll be one of the teams below.
    Ties still to be played
    Bournemouth
    Sheffield United OR Bristol City
    Wolves OR Southampton
    Barnsley OR Chelsea
    Everton OR Tottenham
    Swansea OR Manchester City
    Leicester OR Brighton

    THE NUMBERS BEHIND THE SUCCESS
The full-time stats from Manchester United’s 1-0 win over West Ham.
Two hours of football and two shots at goal for the in-form Hammers.
Without Antonio, were they daft to let Haller go too?
Paul Tierney not using his cards tonight either!

    MAGUIRE REACTS
Harry Maguire was given Man of the Match tonight and he praised the side’s spirit to win tonight after a sucker-punch on Saturday night against Everton.

I thought the performance was good, I feel we could’ve been a bit more clinical. We should have been ahead at the break and they had a spell after it but we defended better than we did against Everton at the weekend. We dug in and I felt we got the win we deserved. We were so disappointed on Saturday so it shows great spirit and mentality to get our heads back up for tonight.
    Harry MaguireBBC Sport

    MAN UTD 1-0 WEST HAM
It wasn’t pretty. In fact it was far from it.
But it was a quality goal that separated the teams and it was a classy finish from Scott McTominay to settle the tie.
West Ham will be disappointed they didn’t create anything and in truth didn’t give it a go.

    PEEEEEEEEEEEP!!!
    IT’S ALL OVER
MANCHESTER UNITED ARE THROUGH TO THE LAST-8 OF THE FA CUP

    MAN UTD 1-0 WEST HAM – EXTRA-TIME
ET 30′ Martial is played in by Cavani and only has Fabianski to beat but strikes it straight at the keeper.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WEST HAM – EXTRA-TIME
ET 30′ Benrahma has it on the left side of the United box and looks for a cross.
Williams slides in perfectly to win it back and Rashford picks up the loose ball and runs 70 yards up the park and into the corner.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WEST HAM – EXTRA-TIME
    ONE MINUTE ADDED ON!

    MAN UTD 1-0 WEST HAM – EXTRA-TIME

Little Cruyff turn and clears away. Tidy.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WEST HAM – EXTRA-TIME

He has Luke Shaw bursting a gut to get on his outside but Martial ducks inside and hits a tired shot right at Fabianski.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WEST HAM – EXTRA-TIME
Five minutes left of extra-time. Will Man Utd see it out, or can West Ham take us to penalties?

    MAN UTD 1-0 WEST HAM – EXTRA-TIME
ET 24′ Lanzini is into the action straight away and feeds Johnson on the left.
His clipped ball in finds Benrahma 10 yards out with a free header but it’s straight at Henderson.
    He might have been offside.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WEST HAM – EXTRA-TIME
    BIG CHANCE FOR WEST HAM!

    MAN UTD 1-0 WEST HAM – EXTRA-TIME
A sore one for the youngster Odubeko as he is subbed, after getting subbed on earlier himself.
Not sure he touched the ball but it’s still a shame for the young lad.
    OFF – Ademipo Odubeko
    ON – Manuel Lanzini

    MAN UTD 1-0 WEST HAM – EXTRA-TIME
ET 20′ Martial wins a 50/50 against Coufal on the touchline – one that neither player looked like they wanted to win.
Suddenly, the hosts are away 5v2 but Martial’s attempted pass for Rashford is very poor and the Hammers get it back.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WEST HAM – EXTRA-TIME
ET 19′ Shaw fires a pass into Cavani who tries a clever flick through for Fernandes but it spins straight through to Fabianski.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WEST HAM – EXTRA-TIME
ET 17′ Close to a second there.
Shaw turns on the ball in midfield, feeds Martial then makes his way into the box.
Martial holds onto it for a few seconds then slides it through for Shaw who times his run perfectly.
Fabianski reads it and rushes off his line to slide in and gather.

    MAN UTD 1-0 WEST HAM – EXTRA-TIME
ET 16′ Got to expect West Ham to come out and give it a go.
It promises to be a lively 15 minutes in store

    THANKS FOR JOINING US
That’s all from us tonight, as Juventus booked a place in the Coppa Italia final with a 2-1 aggregate win over Inter Milan.
Andrea Pirlo’s side will face either Napoli or Atalanta in the final in May, with the second leg of that tie taking place tomorrow night.
Attention for Antonio Conte’s Inter side turns to the league, with two huge clashes against Lazio and AC Milan in their next two games.
The Nerazzurri currently trail leaders AC Milan by two points in the Scudetto title race.
Juventus meanwhile also have a mouthwatering next clash, as they host Napoli on Saturday.
The Bianconeri are currently seven points off top spot with a game in hand.
    That’s all for now though.
Thanks for joining us, it’s been a pleasure.

    CELEBRATIONS

    WORDS EXCHANGED
According to football italia, Juventus defender and substitute Leonardo Bonucci told former boss Antonio Conte:
    “You must respect the referee.”
Inter boss Conte was involved in an altercation with Bonucci after a foul by Matteo Darmian and Cristiano Ronaldo, which led to the comment.

    STAT ATTACK
Here’s a look at the full time stats.
Inter’s failure to test Gianluigi Buffon in the Juve goal is proven by the fact that they managed twenty-one shots in the game, but only three of those were on target.
Juventus managed twelve shots in the game, with four being on target.
Cristiano Ronaldo will be disappointed not to have scored, as he tested Samir Handanovic on two or three occasions.
It doesn’t matter now though, as Juventus progress to the Coppa Italia final 2-1 on aggregate.

    ITALIAN STEEL
It was a Juventus performance reminiscent of Italian sides of old.
Solid at the back, with everyone willing to put their bodies on the line if the ball came their way.
Inter did press in the second half in search of the goals they needed, but in truth never really looked like scoring.
That is summed up by the fact that Romelu Lukaku failed to register a shot on target in the ninety minutes.
Attention for Antonio Conte’s side now turns to the Serie A title race, as they chase a first Scudetto since 2010.

    FINAL BOUND
Inter’s wait for a Coppa Italia trophy goes on.
Juventus meanwhile are into their sixth Coppa Italia final in the last seven seasons after a 2-1 aggregate win against Inter in the Derby D’Italia.
    That is an incredible record.

    PEEEEEEP!
    THAT’S FULL TIME!
    JUVENTUS 0 (2) – INTER 0 (1)
JUVENTUS ARE IN TO THE COPPA ITALIA FINAL!

    JUVENTUS 0-0 INTER
    94. That sums up Inter’s game really.
The cross from the corner fails to beat the first man.
    That might be that.

    JUVENTUS 0-0 INTER
    93. Inter corner.
    Maybe one last chance.

    JUVENTUS 0-0 INTER
    91. It’s Inter who are seeing all of the ball but they don’t look like doing much with it.
    Three minutes left to play.

    JUVENTUS 0-0 INTER
    90. FOUR added minutes in Turin.

    JUVENTUS 0-0 INTER
    89. Juventus are seeing the game out very professionally.
Chiesa wins a free kick under a challenge from Hakimi as we enter the final minute of the ninety.

    JUVENTUS 0-0 INTER
    87. Oh no Aleksandr Kolorov what are you doing there?
He fancies a shot at goal from all of thirty yards out but sends his effort sailing over the bar, ticking precious seconds off the clock.

    JUVENTUS 0-0 INTER
    86. CLOSE!
    Heroic Juventus defending.
Lukaku lays the ball into the path of Sensi in the box but his effort is met by a superb flying block.
There’s been some excellent defending from both sides tonight.

    JUVENTUS 0-0 INTER
    85. Inter corner.
Sensi has a cross deflected behind, and the visitors have yet another chance to put the ball into the box.

    JUVENTUS 0-0 INTER
    83. Inter press forward again, but every time the ball comes into the box it’s met by a Juventus head.
Chiellini does brilliantly in his own six yard box to hold off Lukaku and head the ball away in front of the waiting striker.

    JUVENTUS 0-0 INTER
    82. Juventus substiution.
Andrea Pirlo is bringing on some defensive reinforcements.
    Chiellini is on fro Cuadrado.

    JUVENTUS 0-0 INTER
    81. Juventus clear the initial corner but Inter recycle it.
Barella plays the ball into Hakimi in the box, but he decides to shoot from a tight angle rather than squaring to a team mate.

    JUVENTUS 0-0 INTER
    75. Inter persist with the short corner, and yet again it proves to be unsuccessful.

Sheffield Utd 1 Chelsea 2 LIVE REACTION: Mount and Jorginho net as Tuchel’s men go fifth despite scare after Rudiger OG

CHELSEA made it three Premier League wins on the spin after seeing off rock-bottom Sheffield United.

Best bets for today including Chelsea goalscorer boost

    THAT’S A WRAP
Thanks for joining us this evening, plenty of drama tonight.
Our match report can be your bedtime reading!

    VAR DRAMA
Timo Werner won a contentious penalty this evening with some claiming he deliberately ran into Ramsdale to win a penalty.
The Sky Sports team were divided on whether it should have been given. Graeme Souness said: “He made no attempt to avoid the goalkeeper, he could have damaged the goalkeeper big-time with that.
“He overhits the ball and then appears to run straight at him.
“If he’d caught him with his knee cap instead of his thigh, Ramsdale would be in hospital tonight.”

    TUCHEL TALKS
Speaking on Sky Sports, Thomas Tuchel says: “You arrive in February in Sheffield, you know what’s waiting for you- it feels like a cup game when you arrive here, against a team full of energy, very physical and good at defending.
“You have to accept it’s not going to be easy.
“We had some difficult moments to overcome, but it was a deserved win and from that, we can build confidence. ”
On Timo Werner, Tuchel says: “When he plays like this, we are very happy, it’s a big step forward.
“He won a decisive penalty against Tottenham and again today, it was also an amazing assist from him. If he carries on like this the goals will come.”

    HOW’S STAT?

    TIMO WERNER TALKS
When asked on the ref’s decision not to immediately point to the penalty spot, Werner says: “I was shocked, as I thought it was a clear penalty, I pushed the ball away from him [Ramsdale] and he got me.
“VAR is good and helped the referee. In football when someone does mistakes a goal comes -both teams made mistakes today. ”
On the injury he’s suffered tonight, Werner says: “I have a dead leg from that penalty tackle – the 10/15 minutes after were hard, so I told the manager to take me off.
“I think it’s better to have 11 fit players on the pitch not ten and a half. ”

    MAN OF THE MATCH
Speaking on Sky Sports, Timo Werner says: “I think it was a good win for us, it was a difficult game against a tightly-defended Sheiffield.
“From myself, again, no goal, but it’s good to see I can help the team with other things- so I keep going.
“Two assists like today is good, but as a striker you want to score.
“It’s a long period in my career not to score, but you have to keep trying and the goals will come.”
On his new manager, he says: “Every manager is different in how they want to play- he gives us lots of ideas, so now I’m a left ten.
“It’s very good for me and I think the last wins were a good move from the manager.”

    GOLDEN TUCH?
Tuchel has only been head coach of Chelsea since 26 January.
He’s got his reign off to a flying start…

It’s getting a little heated at Bramall Lane.

    SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-2 CHELSEA

It’s in front of the Chelsea dugout and they’re up in arms.
Didn’t look much in it to be honest.

    SHEFFIELD UNITED 1-2 CHELSEA
    75. Sharp manages to stay on his feet as he sashays around Chelsea’s defence.

    GOODBYE FROM ANFIELD
Three weeks ago, the idea of Liverpool losing a game at Anfield was unthinkable.
The prospect of them losing three in a row for the first time since 1963 was impossible.
Yet 18 days on, the memories of their 68-match unbeaten home run are growing distant, and their title defence lies in tatters.
Following defeats to Burnley and Brighton, the champions were swept aside by Manchester City in a blistering second half on Merseyside.
Two goals from Ilkay Gundogan, who had earlier missed a penalty, and one each from Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden, extended City’s lead at the top of the Premier League to five points with a game in hand on their rivals.
The Reds, however, are now ten points off the pace with Jurgen Klopp now admitting it is a top-four spot and Champions League football that they are fighting for in what remains of the season.
Mo Salah’s levelling penalty had brought some relief to Liverpool’s woes, but a pair of awful errors from Alisson gifted City two quick goals, and Pep Guardiola’s team never looked back.
It’s now 14 successive wins in all competition for City, matching a top-flight record set only twice before in the history of the English game.
After today, they’re bound to have the Premier League trophy to show for it come the end of the campaign. What else awaits them remains to be seen.
There’s more football being played tonight so why not hop over to our live coverage of Sheffield United’s match with Chelsea. Thanks for reading and goodnight.

    PROUD PEP
A delighted Pep Guardiola has been speaking at full time about how pleased he was by his team’s start to both halves, and how a change of position for Phil Foden brought the best out of the youngster.

We cannot play like they play because when they play with transitions, they are the best team in the world. In the second half, we adjusted our set up, and the quality of the players did the rest.
    Pep Guardiola

    KLOPP REACTION
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp believes his team performed well for the most part at Anfield, but were creators of their own downfall with a series of silly mistakes.

The performance was good most of the time. For the goals we made massive mistakes. If we make them against each team, it’s a problem. Against City, it’s a killer.
    Jurgen Klopp

    ALISSON’S AFTERNOON TO FORGET
Two awful errors in the space of three minutes from Alisson were central to Liverpool’s heavy defeat, but the Reds will console themselves that they are normally able to rely on one of the world’s best between the sticks.

    THE TABLE
Here’s how the Premier League looks after this afternoon’s game.
Pep Guardiola’s men lead their city rivals by five points and have a game in hand, but Liverpool find themselves ten points off the pace.

It tickled Neville so much that he said he wanted it as his new ring tone.

    FULL TIME STATS
Here are all the numbers following a sensational afternoon at Anfield.
Some are more surprising than others.

    FT: LIVERPOOL 1-4 MAN CITY
Manchester City’s have won at Anfield for the first time since 2003, and have done so in style. They were helped on their way by two uncharacteristic blunders from Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson that allowed Ilkay Gundogan and Raheem Sterling to score, and all after Mo Salah had brought the hosts level from the penalty spot. Phil Foden’s sensational strike was the icing on the cake as Liverpool fell to a third successive home defeat for the first time since 1963.

    PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!THE FINAL WHISTLE GOES!

    LIVERPOOL 1-4 MAN CITY
    90. There will be three minutes of added time to be played before Man City go five points clear at the top of the table.
Remember, they will have a game in hand.
Remember, they will have won 14 games in a row in all competitions.
Remember, they still have De Bruyne and Aguero to come back into the team.

    LIVERPOOL 1-4 MAN CITY
    88. It’s a procession now for City.

    LIVERPOOL 1-4 MAN CITY
    84. What a goal! What a player!
It’s absolutely magnificent from Phil Foden, who takes Gabriel Jesus’ pass in his stride on the right, darts into the box, and absolutely hammers a shot through Alisson and into the roof of the net.
Every City player runs to the youngster, they know he’s something special. They know they’re something special. They know they’re on the verge of something special.

    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAALLLLL!!BRILLIANT FROM PHIL FODEN!!

It’s also his first at Anfield since he left Liverpool.

    LIVERPOOL 1-3 MAN CITY
    76. Alisson blunderland!
The Brazilian goalkeeper has made the same mistake again, making a mess of another routine backpass by sending it straight to Bernardo Silva on the right of the box.
It presents the Spaniard with a simple opportunity to charge down on the Liverpool stopper, and loop a cross over for Raheem Sterling to head in at the far post from a yard out.
    It’s unbelievable! City lead 3-1!

GOOOOOOAAAAALLLL!!ALISSON HAS DONE IT AGAIN!!RAHEEM STERLING MAKES IT THREE!!

    LIVERPOOL 1-2 MAN CITY
    75. The game has really livened up now…

    LIVERPOOL 1-2 MAN CITY
    73. Manchester City lead again but it’s all down to the carelessness of Alisson.
The Liverpool goalkeeper – usually so reliable – is almost dispossessed on the edge of his own box when he tries an unnecessarily clever flick. He gets away with it, but doesn’t learn his lesson when the ball is laid back to him seconds later.
A terrible kick out is straight at Phil Foden, who still has much to do. He does it brilliantly, dribbling towards the touchline before squaring a pass for Ilkay Gundogan to score.

JUVENTUS take on Roma in a crucial Serie A clash.
Cristiano Ronaldo and co sit one point behind their opponents as they look to fire themselves back into the title race.
Juventus vs Roma kicks off at 5pm.
Juventus vs Roma is live on Premier Sports 1.
To stream the game live for FREE, head to the LiveScore App.

    JUVENTUS XI
Juventus manager Andrea Pirlo has opted for a 4-4-2 formation with two changes to the team that beat Sampdoria 2-0 away in the Serie A on January 30.
Ex-Arsenal star Wojciech Szczesny starts in goal with Alex Sandro replacing former Chelsea ace Juan Cuadrado at left-back while ex-Manchester City player Danilo plays at right back.
Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini link up at centre-back once more.
Weston McKenni starts on the right wing with Federico Chiesa on the other side while Adrien Rabiot replaces Rodrigo Bentancur in midfield to team up with Arthur.
Ex-Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata leads the line with Manchester United legend Cristiano Ronaldo

    THE TEAM SHEETS ARE IN!!!

    JUVE STATS
Juventus are fourth in the Serie A table with a game in hand and eight points separating them from Inter Milan at the top.
Juve have only amassed 11 wins in all of their 19 league matches, which is the worst return out of the entire top five in the Serie A, and have fallen behind due to six draws and two losses.
However, the Italian champions have been on fire recently as they conquered the Super Cup last month and won five out of their last six matches.
Juventus have scored a total of 39 league goals, which is the worst tally out of the entire top five, but currently boast the best defence in the Serie A as they have only conceded a mere 18

    HEAD-TO-HEAD
Juventus and Roma’s first ever encounter took place way back in 1927, during Benito Mussolini’s fascist dictatorship, when they drew 0-0 in Rome.
Since then, Juve count a whopping 92 victories in 195 matches, compared to the Romans’ 48 wins.
The Italian champions have enjoyed plenty of success against the Giallorossi in the last nine years as they have won 10 out of 11 matches at home across all competitions.
However, Paulo Fonseca’s side’s one and only victory in Turin throughout this period took place last season with a 3-1 victory in the Serie A thanks to a goal by Nikola Kalinic and a brace by Diego Perotti, which cancelled out Gonzalo Higuain’s opener

    GOOD AFTERNOON FROM TURIN
Welcome to our live coverage of the Serie A clash between Juventus and Roma at the Juventus Stadium.
The battle for third place is on as the Romans are barely holding up with one point ahead of fourth-placed Juve, who have a game in hand.
The Italian champions’ manager Andrea Pirlo left Paulo Dybala out of his squad yet again due to a ligament injury he endured last month.
But other than that, the Turin outfit don’t have any further injuries or suspensions to report ahead of tonight’s crunch clash.
Of course, Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to start even though he appeared to be furious when he was substituted on Tuesday’s Coppa Italia victory over Inter Milan.
Pirlo explained: “There is no contract clause that says he can’t be subbed off. He knows he is a fundamental player for us but to get his breath back, he must always be at the top.”
Roma manager Paulo Fonseca, on the other hand, will be without Nicolo Zaniolo and ex-Chelsea star Pedro, who are nursing a cruciate ligament and a muscle injury respectively.
Former Manchester United ace Chris Smalling has also been omitted on account of a strain on his left thigh he suffered recently

Aston Villa 1 Arsenal 0 LIVE REACTION: Limp Gunners beaten as Watkins’ early strike gives home side all three points

ARSENAL are scrambling to try and get a late equaliser at Villa Park.
Ollie Watkins’ second-minute strike gave the home side the lead and Emi Martinez was fantastic in the Villa goal against his former side.

Stay up to date with all the reaction in our live blog…

    THAT’S A WRAP
So we didn’t get as many goals as expected but the Villa fans won’t care because it’s their team who were victorious today.
Ollie Watkins who bagged a brace at the Emirates in November, got himself on the scoresheet once more in only 74 seconds.
And the game plan for Dean Smith’s side was pretty simple after that -Defend and counter when you can which in all fairness, they executed perfectly.
Apart from an acrobatic save from a Xhaka free-kick, Martinez never had much to do against his former side.
At one stage, the Gunners had three players who play in that ‘number 10′ role all on the field at the same time.
But Tyrone Mings and co managed to shut out Arsenal for a second consecutive time this season.
Thanks for sticking with me and don’t go anywhere as we have plenty of action for you here on SunSport.
    Enjoy your weekend people!

I must admit that a few players received some harsh ratings but go check it out for yourself.

    UPCOMING FIXTURES
After a disappointing week, the Gunners will have to wait until Valentines Day to bounce back against Leeds before resuming their Europa League campaign.

    UPDATED STANDINGS
Aston Villa jump up to 8th spot after claiming all three points meaning that they are only two points off a place in Europe.
As for Arsenal, they stay in 10th and European qualification seems to be slipping further and further away.

    74 SECONDS
Let’s have a look Watkins’ strike in 74 seconds which turned out to be the match winning goal.

Ollie Watkins’ early goal was enough to seal an 1️⃣1️⃣th win of the season – the most by a Villa side in the Premier League for a decade! 👏 pic.twitter.com/dggjGgxzzF

    WATKINS POST-MATCH ANALYSIS
The winning goal scorer of the game Ollie Watkins telling the media how much that win meant to his team and describing how he finished his opportunity.
Watkins said: “It’s a big result here. We’ve played some good stuff but we haven’t always got the results we wanted at home.
“But yes delighted with that today, we grinded it out and that’s what it’s all about really.
“Bit of confusion at the back for them. I think it’s come off my left foot, hit the defender and then gone in but I’ll take that.
“I think we were a bit off it against West Ham and they punished us for that so we needed a big reaction today and I think we showed that out there.”

    WAT’S THE MATTER?
Ollie Watkins has become the first English player since Gabriel Agbonlahor in 2009/10 to reach ten Premier League goals in a season for Aston Villa.
What a striker he is becoming.

    FULL TIME STATS
Same old story from the first half.
The Gunners with all the possession but not enough clear cut chances created.
Aston Villa should be proud of their performance today.

    VICTORIOUS
The boys from Birmingham enjoyed that one.
Villa really did defend for their lives and it was worth it in the end!

    PEEEEEEEEEEEEP!
JUST AS I THOUGHT THAT’S IT!
THE REF BLOWS TO END THE GAME!
    FT: VILLA 1-0 ARSENAL

    VILLA 1-0 ARSENAL
90+5. The corner is cleared and that should be enough to get Aston Villa over the line.
It’s all on the referee Chris Kavanagh now.

    VILLA 1-0 ARSENAL
    90+4. ONE LAST CHANCE!
The Gunners have a corner in the last minute.
    Can they make it count?

    VILLA 1-0 ARSENAL
90+1. The ball went out to the left again for Saka to whip it in which has been a feature of this second half.
But Martinez sprinted off his line and even took a boot to the stomach just to collect the ball.
You can see what this means to the ex-Arsenal goalkeeper.

    FIVE MINUTES OF ADDITIONAL TIME!

    VILLA 1-0 ARSENAL
    89. CHEEKY RAMSEY!
The youngster skipped past one Arsenal player and went for the curler but Ryan was able to catch it with ease.
The Villa midfielder isn’t short of confidence and what a story that would of been.

    VILLA 1-0 ARSENAL
    87. We are entering the dying minutes of the game and time is running out for Arsenal to get the equaliser.
And Martinez is moments away from keeping consecutive clean sheets against his former team.

    VILLA 1-0 ARSENAL
    82. That left-hand side is looking so dangerous for the Gunners.
Pepe played it out to Saka who then rolled it across for Odegaard to put his foot through it.
But the Norwegian wasn’t able to keep it down to the delight of Dean Smith and his team.
Absolutely huge chance for him to get his first goal for the club.

    PARTEY POOPER
Thomas Partey leaving the field after picking up another injury.
He’s had such a stop start career in North London so far.

    VILLA 1-0 ARSENAL
    77. OUTSTANDING SAVE FROM RYAN AGAIN!
Jack Grealish picked up the ball on the left hand side, went round the outside of Bellerin and got a shot off on his weaker left foot.
But Mat Ryan made an acrobatic save in between those Arsenal sticks to deny the England international inflicting more pain on his team.

    VILLA 1-0 ARSENAL
    76. Dean Smith has decided to drag off Ross Barkley for Jacob Ramsey to try and get some control of the game.
Barkley didn’t look too happy in coming off I have to admit.

    VILLA 1-0 ARSENAL
    75. The corner was easily dealt and Aston Villa can breathe a sigh of relief for now.
But the way things are going, you can guarantee Arsenal will be back for more.

    VILLA 1-0 ARSENAL
    73. Arsenal have a corner but before they take it, Willian has just replaced Partey who has picked up what looks to be a slight knock.
    Huge blow for the Gunners.

    VILLA 1-0 ARSENAL
    72. Villa are struggling to hold the ball at the minute.
Every time the Claret and Blue’s regain possession, the Gunners are on them in a flash.
How long will they be able to sustain this pressure for?

    DOUBLE TROUBLE
The home side are doubling up on every Arsenal player that touches the ball.

    VILLA 1-0 ARSENAL
    66. Arsenal have gone up a gear.
That left hand-side of Pepe and Saka is starting to cause all sorts of problems to the Villa defence.
The game is really heating up now.
