Chelsea 2-5 West Brom LIVE RESULT: Thiago Silva red card costs Blues dear as Robinson and Pereira net doubles

TEN-MAN Chelsea have been hammered by struggling West Brom at Stamford Bridge.Christian Pulisic gave Thomas Tuchel’s Blues the lead on 28 minutes against the Baggies.
But just one minute later Thiago Silva was sent off for a second bookable offence.
And in first half stoppage time, Matheus Pereira bagged a quickfire double to turn the game on its head.
Callum Robinson and Mbaye Diagne then put the Baggies three goals ahead but Mason Mount has given the Blues hope.
However a second from Callum Robinson in stoppage time rounded off a thumping win for Sam Allardyce’s side.
    THAT’S ALL FROM STAMFORD BRIDGE
I did ask for a minimum of five goals in this match and the lads provided us with seven. You see, if you don’t ask, you don’t get.
Chelsea started off the game controlling all the possession but moments of pressure from the Baggies led to some sloppy play in their passing.
However, the Blues did take the lead through Mason Mount who was quickest to follow in a Marcos Alonso’s free-kick which originally hit the post.
Sam Allardyce must have feared the worst at this point but then a bizarre challenge from Thiago Silva minutes after the restart, led to the Brazilian getting sent off in under half-an hour.
And then to rub salt into the Blues wounds, not only did West Brom get the equaliser but Pereira put his side 2-1 up in stoppage time of the first half.
Thomas Tuchel was forced into tweaking his team around for the second 45 but it was to no avail because Callum Robinson got on the scoring act on the 63rd minute with a superb volley.
Then Diagne put the Baggies in dreamland by making it 4-1 after some excellent team play.
Mason Mount pulled one back for Chelsea giving Thomas Tuchel’s side a glimmer of hope but Robinson went on to delightfully chip Mendy, getting his second of the day and West Brom’s fifth in additional time.
A great day for Sam Allardyce and his side. As for Tuchel and Chelsea, their honeymoon period is officially over.
Thanks for sticking with me today people but there’s plenty more action coming up right here on SunSport.
Happy Easter again and have an EGGSellent weekend!

    DOUBLE TROUBLE
One more statistic for everyone that loves a stat.
Matheus Pereira and Callum Robinson are only the second duo following Craig Bellamy and Carlos Tevez to both score a brace in the same Premier League match at Stamford Bridge.

    NEXT UP FOR THE BLUES
The Blues have no time to feel sorry for themselves because next, Chelsea travel across London to take on Crystal Palace before welcoming Brighton to Stamford Bridge the following week in the Premier League.
But in between those fixtures, Thomas Tuchel’s side have to try and navigate their way past Porto in the Champions League Quarter-Final as well as overcome Manchester City in the FA Cup Semi-Final.
April is turning out to be a make or break month for Chelsea.

    CURRENT LEAGUE STANDINGS
With Chelsea failing to register any points against West Brom, it blows the top four race wide open.
As for the Baggies, it’s a huge step in the right direction for their relegation battle but the reality of it is that they still have a lot to do.

    TUCHEL TALKS
The Chelsea boss held his hands up and accepted that his team were just not good enough today.
Thomas Tuchel said: “We were not able to cope with the situation.
“Everything that could of gone wrong went wrong thanks to the red card but we have to accept a big loss today so maybe it’s a big wake up call for all of us, me included.
“We made big, big mistakes before the two yellow cards so we are responsible for that, we had too many ball losses.
“Today was impossible for us to adapt to the situation but we have to adapt it even if it is very hard.”
    CHELSEA’S NIGHTMARE
A little extra on Callum Robinson.
The forwards braces both home and away against the Blues puts him level with Sergio Aguero for the most goals scored against Chelsea.

    ROBINSON’S ROCKET
And here is the superb volley from Callum Robinson.
    What a fantastic effort.
The Baggies are in dreamland! 🔥Callum Robinson with a superb volley to extend West Brom’s lead over 10-man Chelsea! 💥👏 pic.twitter.com/CFUeNholZd— Football on BT Sport (@btsportfootball) April 3, 2021

    ROBINSON’S REVIEW
Callum Robinson loves a goal against Chelsea and he was kind enough to describe how his first one of the match played out.
The West Brom attacker said: “It’s nice to come here and get so many goals and really enjoy it today against a really good Chelsea team ten men or not.
“I don’t have a clue. It must just be that team where I enjoy playing against their defenders, I’m not sure.
“The lads done great today for me to get them two goals and I really enjoyed it.
“I was just begging he saw me but I didn’t want to shout too loud so the defender would hear me but they didn’t pick me up and I just wanted to get good contact.
“And I was happy enough that it went in the top corner or wherever it went.”
    AFTER EIGHT
The Baggies have scored eight goals against Chelsea across both Premier League fixtures this season which is the most any team has managed against the Blues since Liverpool in the 1989-90 campaign.
8 – West Brom’s eight goals against Chelsea in the Premier League this season is the most the Blues have shipped against an opponent in a single top-flight campaign since conceding nine against Liverpool in 1989-90. Gluttons. #CHEWBA— OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) April 3, 2021

    FULL TIME STATS
The Blues dominated statistics wise but that doesn’t paint the full picture of how well West Brom played.
And to be honest, the only stat that counts is in the top row.

    TUC-HEL OF A BEATING
Sam Allardyce has just handed Thomas Tuchel his first loss as Chelsea boss and what a defeat it was.

    PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!
THIS GAME EPITOMISES THE PREMIER LEAGUE!
    EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED!
    FT: CHELSEA 2-5 WEST BROM

For all of Chelsea’s attacking play, they got caught out on the counter by one splitting through-ball.
And Callum Robinson who is in blistering form against the Blues, delicately dinked the ball over an oncoming Mendy.
Before today, Chelsea had only conceded one goal under Thomas Tuchel and now they have shipped five in one game!
    CHELSEA 2-5 WEST BROM
    GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!
IT’S FANTASTIC FIVE FOR WEST BROM!
    AND ANOTHER FOR CALLUM ROBINSON!
    UNBELIEVABLE!
    CHELSEA 2-4 WEST BROM
    86. Jake Livermore has been sent on by Sam Allardyce to replace Matthew Phillips just to sturdy up the defence.
That’s more like the Sam we know.
    CHELSEA 2-4 WEST BROM
    85. Chelsea are trying their hardest to pass their way through the Baggies defence.
But that back-line is staying firm and with only five minutes remaining, time is running out for the Blues.
    GOOD OL’ GARY
Gary Linker just reminding us that we are not used to seeing Sam Allardyces’ teams score four in a match.
This is some game. If @WBA keep playing this kind of football, it will give Big Sam a bad name.— Gary Lineker 💙 (@GaryLineker) April 3, 2021

    CHELSEA 2-4 WEST BROM
    79. Timo Werner is trying to take matters in his own hands by shooting outside the box.
But his effort is blocked. The Blues are getting desperate.
    PRAYING MANTIS
Mbaye Diagne celebrating his goal but I’m sure he included for West Brom to hang on for the three points in his prayers.

    CHELSEA 2-4 WEST BROM
    75. ZOUMA HOW DID YOU MISS?!
Reece James picked out his team-mate at the back-post and Kurt Zouma just had to keep the ball down but he fluffed his lines.
Had that gone in, it would of been panic stations for Sam Allarydce and his side.

A bit of complacency crept in the West Brom ranks enabling Chelsea to breakthrough their back-line easily.
And Timo Werner unselfishly put it on a plate for Mason Mount to tap home for Chelsea’s second of the day.
    Game on!
    CHELSEA 2-4 WEST BROM
    GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!
    HOLD ON A MINUTE HERE!
MASON MOUNT HAS JUST MADE IT 4-2!
    IT’S NOT OVER YET FOLKS!

Excellent team play from the Baggies.
They hit Chelsea on the counter attack and Diagne kept his composure to tuck the ball home past Mendy.
Surely that’s the game or is there time for one more twist?
    CHESLEA 1-4 WEST BROM
    GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!
I CAN’T BELIEVE WHAT I AM SEEING HERE!
    IT’S ANOTHER FOR THE BAGGIES!
    DIAGNE MAKES IT FOUR!

    HOWE ABOUT THAT
Eddie Howe is poised to become Celtic’s new manager.
SunSport understands the Hoops’ leading candidate to replace Neil Lennon has agreed in principle to take the role.
And barring a last-ditch change of heart, the former Bournemouth manager, 43, is expected to sign a contract worth up to £2million a year and be officially announced early next week.
The fine details of the deal were being ironed out on Friday night, but Celts’ chiefs are confident they will get their man.
Howe has been in a strong negotiating position since Celtic’s major shareholder Dermot Desmond made clear he was the one they wanted during a midweek London summit, as revealed by SunSport.
    LION IN WAIT
Joe Cole is a surprise contender to become England Under-21 boss.
Current coach Aidy Boothroyd is set for the axe following the disastrous European Championship campaign.
England’s colts finished bottom of their group and Boothroyd then further damaged his chances of staying on by describing the role as an “utterly impossible job”.
Former Chelsea and England midfielder Cole, 39, obtained his Uefa A licence a year ago and is passionate about making a move into management.
He is also passionate about our national team.
Since retiring as a player, Cole has worked as a coach in the academy of his old club.
He has also been to England’s HQ at St George’s Park to study training sessions and give talks to youth players.
Cole’s old Chelsea team-mate Frank Lampard and current QPR boss Mark Warburton have also been touted as possible successors to Boothroyd.

    FER REAL
Manchester United fans are excited by Bruno Fernandes’ return to action this weekend.

    KEEPER CONUNDRUM
Ole Gunnar Solskajer is agonising over who to make his number one goalkeeper in the final Premier League run-in.
Dean Henderson has enjoyed a run of six games while David De Gea was given time off for the birth of his first child.
Solskjaer said: “It’s difficult to leave one of them out. It’s easy to give the nod they’ll play, it’s difficult to leave one out. Where there can be potential tension and controversy, everyone wants to hear a comment from me.
“They are both top goalkeepers and both of them want to play as much as possible. But who we pick will be decided on merit and we have to think of who’s going give us a win on any given day.
“Both will be needed in these final nine league games and five in the Europa League because we want to go all the way in that.”
    KLOPP ON
Jurgen Klopp has admitted that Liverpool cannot afford to waste any more points if they are to make top four.
He told Sky Sports: “Yes, it must be for us. There’s a lot to go for. We’re not in the best position to fight for the Champions League spots but it’s clear we’ll fight for it and if not then for the other European spots.
“It’s our job and that’s what we want. We want to be as successful as possible. At the beginning of the season, we had different targets which is normal but we’re now here in our reality and the position is not as bad as it could’ve been so we’re going to try everything to squeeze something out of this season.
“There are other teams in better positions, so we have to make sure that we can chase them but whether that’s possible or not will be decided in the specific games, like on Saturday against Arsenal. We don’t have many points to waste anymore and a tough programme coming up. When you’re in the situation we’re in, you’ve not got a lot to lose as well so let’s go for it.”
    SOL MATES
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is refusing to be drawn into a public battle to land Erling Haaland.
He said: “Even though I worked with Erling it’s not right for me as Manchester United manager to talk about Erling, he will make his own mind up.
“I’m focusing on the next two months and whatever happens in the world of football there is only so many places anyone can go to and I just, focus on the ones who are here.”
    ALL ON ROO
Wayne Rooney has suggested that Derby have an agreement with Manchester United to sign Teden Mengi next season.
Rooney doubling down on wanting Mengi back: “I’d very much like him back next season.”Sounds like Derby and United have a handshake agreement on it: “It’s on the player now.” Rooney adds.— Ryan Conway (@RJConway92) April 2, 2021

    WERNING LIGHT

    HEAD’S GONE
Oxford have called in cops after accusing an unknown Sunderland staff member of headbutting goalkeeper Jack Stevens.
The U’s lost a bad-tempered League One clash 3-1 today but two tunnel clashes at the break and full-time whistle left boss Karl Robinson raging.
He said: “Yes something happened but we’ll let the police deal with that.
“It’s funny because they usually have more TV cameras than any other clubs in world football for the last two-and-a-half years with the documentaries.
“But for some unknown reason there wasn’t one in the tunnel at half time for the first time in three years.
“Their players seen it, but what happened I will keep that quiet.
“Our goalkeeper will make a charge and at the end of the game it shows how severe it was because the fourth official asked the person who it was to leave early to get out the way.
“It shows you again the conduct of what they do when they score the winner right in front of our bench.
“I’m furious and there’s so many things I could say but we have to keep our dignity at times an plead the fifth.”
    ROR POTENTIAL
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has hailed Liam Delap’s “incredible” progress and promised the 18-year-old striker a first-team spot next season.
Guardiola said: “Liam is doing incredibly well – we are in touch with Enzo Maresca to see how (EDS players) are developing.
“Next season he will be with us, training with us every day.”

    HOW DID HE MISS?
Miss of the season from Reading’s Lucas Joao in their 1-1 draw with Barnsley.

    ROLE TO PLAY
Teddy Sheringham has revealed how Ole Gunnar Solskjaer felt being a bench role during Manchester United’s iconic treble season.
He told the club’s website: “Ole and I definitely had a similar philosophy on being substitutes.
“I mean, you don’t want to be known as or called a ‘super sub’ or a ‘great sub’. I played a lot of games.
“In the latter part of my career, I came on and scored goals as a sub and people remember that.
“It’s fine. Not a problem, but there is the first part of my career people need to remember as well. But you do have to get your head around it.”
    CLATT’S OFF
Mark Clattenburg hailed Rebecca Welch’s EFL refereeing appointment as a major leap forward for the men’s game.
He told Sky Sports: “Rebecca Welch is an amazing story because she didn’t start until 27 so this is very late.
“To achieve what she has done in 10 years, I want to wish her the best because this is her first step.
“I remember at 25 when I first refereed a football league game and that was unheard of.
“To break those barriers is so important, so everybody will be watching Rebecca.
“We all want to wish her well because this is the stepping stone that can enhance and make women more accepted in the men’s game.”

    TOP MARCS
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hopeful both Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood will be fit to face Brighton this weekend.
He said: “As always when you send them away on an international break you keep your fingers crossed they’ll be available for you.
“I don’t know about Anthony (Martial), he didn’t join in training this morning but Marcus and Mason trained for the first time this morning and hopefully they can get through that with no reaction.
“And if they complete the selection tomorrow they might be available for selection.”
    FLYING FOXES
Jonathan Morgan is out for revenge against London City Lionesses with Leicester on the verge of sealing their dream promotion.
An Easter Sunday win against the only team to have beaten the Foxes in the Women’s Championship would guarantee them a WSL spot.
He said: “I’ve said to the girls that I want to get a little bit of revenge for that loss to London City because it was such a, such a big loss for us and it was a bit unexpected.
“But it was also a sliding door moment in the season because it highlighted some of our weaknesses and vulnerabilities, which we were able to shore up as you can see in the 11 wins since,
“We need to treat this game the same as we have treated all the others.
“We want to play our best and win the game, but obviously this week is different because those three points would secure the title.
“And it would be a fitting turnaround given the last game we lost was against London City.”
    ODE TO JOY
Arsenal look set to be without academy graduates Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe for their clash against Liverpool on Saturday.
Commenting on the 19-year-old, Mikel Arteta said: “He hasn’t trained with the team yet. He’s been doing some individual work.
“We had to pull him out of the squad. He’s feeling better but hasn’t trained with the team yet.”
Addressing Smith Rowe on Thursday, the ex-Everton midfielder added: “He has some discomfort in his hip.
“We will see today with the physios and if he’s okay for training tomorrow.”

    BOO-HOO CAMP
Dani Olmo has revealed he was forced “against his will” before he joined Barcelona juniors to pose for a photo with Lionel Messi.
He told The Players Tribune: “Once, before even joining La Masia, I accompanied my father while he was directing a game in Castelldefels.
“I was eight. I was playing alone and happy, when someone – I think it was a friend of dad’s – approached me and said, ‘Hey, Dani, come here! You won’t believe it. You can take a picture with Lionel Messi!’
“Wow, Messi, right? In Castelldefels? What kid wouldn’t want a picture with him? Well, me!
“I said something like, “No thanks. I’m fine. I want to keep playing! It’s just a picture, right?’
“But against my will they put me next to Messi and took the photo.”
    SMALL PRICE TO PAY
Manchester United have reportedly entered the race for Everton defender Thierry Small.
The Express claim the 16-year-old could leave Goodison Park on a free transfer following limited first-team opportunities.
And United are set to rival Arsenal, Brentford, Brighton and even Bayern Munich for the Everton academy graduate’s signature.
But the report adds that Small is ready to spurn the advances of any big clubs with playing time his current priority.
    SUNDERLAND 3 OXFORD 1
The Black Cats continued their march to promotion as they came from behind to beat Oxford 3-1 ahead of the crunch trip to Peterborough.
Lee Johnson’s men stretched their unbeaten run in League One to 11 as Lynden Gooch, AIden McGeady and Max Power struck after James Henry’s opener.

    GOAL HAAL
Erling Haaland is Manchester United’s best bet if they are to sign a striker in the summer, according to Paul Scholes.
He told the Webby & O’Neill show: “[United] need a No9.
“I think the forwards they have are very good, but are any of them really a No9, or are they wide players? You just can’t make sense out of it really.
“When Cavani’s played, he’s looked alright but he’s had a few injuries. He’s at that age. It was always going to happen, he was always going to be bit-part.
“They need someone who is more permanent who’s out there and available. I know Haaland is talked about a lot, he’s going to cost a lot of money.
“Harry Kane at Spurs, there’s rumours that he might want to leave there.
“I think any one of them, you take any one of them, but I think if I had to choose, then Haaland would definitely be the one.
“Purely for his age, great ability as well, the timing of his career, he’s played under Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] before…
“I think it would make sense for everyone to do it, but there’s going to be other clubs in for him which is going to be difficult.”
    WIN THE LOTTI
Chelsea are reportedly lining up an £85million swoop for Torino’s Andrea Belotti.
The Blues are said to be interested in the 27-year-old striker who has bagged 11 goals and six assists in 25 Serie A appearances this season.
Corriere Granato reports Chelsea are one of four interested Premier League sides.
High flying West Ham, Jose Mourinho’s Spurs and Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton are the other teams mentioned.
Thomas Tuchel’s side could look to recruit the Torino skipper as a slightly cheaper alternative to Erling Haaland or former forward Romelu Lukaku.
    ALL BEHIND ROO
Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney finally hung up his boots this season with his Old Trafford legacy poised to remain for generations.

    PUSH AND PAUL
Paulo Dybala is reportedly set to be sold by Juventus following a breach of lockdown rules.
Team-mates Arthur Melo and Weston McKennie attended an alleged gathering with the striker after Italy introduced strict coronavirus measures.
Media reports suggest police were called to the dinner, which included several people, and the club has reacted furiously.
The trio are set to be left out of Saturday’s local derby with Torino and have all reportedly been fined.
According to CalcioMercato, the episode has added further fuel to the fire of Dybala’s exit from the team.

    MORE FROM KLOPP
Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk is also fighting to join the Dutch squad as he continues his recovery from cruciate knee ligament damage that has kept him out for the past six months.
Klopp added: “Nothing has changed. They are all in the place they should be at the moment and that is it.
“Time will show. I do not want to take a player away from England or Holland.
“If they are ready then they are ready. If they are not ready, I cannot change that.
“It is not about me to make the decision. I only deliver the news when I have it, and I do not have it at the moment.
“No bad news, no brilliant news.”

    HEN HEARTY
Jordan Henderson has been offered a glimmer of hope that he could still make England’s bid for Euro glory.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp insists he still has “no idea” of whether Henderson will be ready but he revealed: “At the moment he cannot train but he will train in the next days and weeks for sure.
“It is just about time. If the time will be enough? I hope so.”
    HOT ROD
Marcelo Bielsa is adamant that Rodrigo has already justified Leeds’ record £26million spend – despite just three goals.
Injuries and a bout of Covid have restricted the Spanish forward to 12 starts since joining from Valencia.
Asked if supporters have to wait until next season to see Rodrigo’s best, he said: “No, he can immediately show the resources he has.
“Rodrigo has already shown how important he can be to Leeds and has also justified, with the abilities he has, his transfer fee.
“We hope to have him healthy for a considerable amount of time and, if this happens, he will be able to show his ability very quickly.
“For me, it would be very difficult in the current footballing scenario to obtain a player with his qualities.
“He becomes a starter when he’s in a good state.
“We have seen what he is capable of – he is a great striker.”

    MORE FROM SOLSKJAER
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admitted it will be difficult to do anything out of the public eye in his pursuit of Erling Haaland.
He said: “I think the way the world works at the moment, you’d like to do all your business on the quiet and all your talks on the quiet but there are platforms everywhere, there’s news, the media make that more difficult.
“Who can you trust? Hopefully we can suddenly sit here with players no one has written about.
“We conduct our recruitment business, scouting, the players that we are interested in, we do it the right way I hope and feel.”

    ‘STAY STRONG’
Donny van de Beek wished old Ajax pal Abdelhak Nouri a happy birthday as the ex-midfielder turned 24 on Friday.

    HAAL NO
Pep Guardiola fears Manchester City will be priced out of a big money replacement for Sergio Aguero this summer.
The City boss said: “There are a lot, a lot, a lot of big, big chances that maybe we are not going to sign a striker for next season with the situation world economics as they are.
“We have enough players in the first team and interesting players in the academy.
“With these prices, it’s impossible – we cannot afford it. It’s not going to happen.
“All the clubs struggle financially and we are not an exception.”
    POWER SERG
Jamie Carragher has named Sergio Aguero the second-best striker in Premier League history ahead of his Manchester City exit.

But the Spanish star is ready to return and Manchester United boss Solskjaer has a big call to make for Sunday’s home game against Brighton. A call that could well point to who will be his main man for next season.

    ERLI BIRD
Erling Haaland’s agent Mino Raiola is set to fly to England TODAY for transfer talks with Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool but NOT Manchester United.
The super agent was spotted flying into Barcelona and Madrid alongside the player’s father Alfe-Inge Haaland on Thursday to hold talks with the El Clasico sides.
And it was reported that a further three interested teams were due to begin negotiations around a potential deal for Borussia Dortmund’s prized asset.
The Mail reports Raiola and Haaland senior will arrive in England to hold talks with multiple Premier League giants.
Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool are expected to welcome the pair but SunSport understands United will not meet with Haaland’s agent, who also represents Paul Pogba.
However, the Red Devils are waiting in the wings and keeping tabs on his situation. The Norwegian has a £65million release clause in his Dortmund contract but it cannot be activated until the end of next season.

    TOUCH OF CLASS
Yeovil Town fans have paid their respects to their late captain Lee Collins by laying tributes outside Huish Park.
The former Port Vale defender was found dead by police at the age of 32 on Wednesday, with news of his passing leaving the football world in mourning.
Collins – who had featured eight times for the National League side this term – joined the Glovers in 2019 after being released by Forest Green Rovers. And he quickly became a fan favourite, with supporters heading to their ground to lay out flowers, scarves, jerseys and emotional messages.
A statement from Yeovil told fans they were welcome to show their respect, as they tweeted: “The club have left an area near the ticket office for supporters to lay flowers and leave tributes to Lee. We miss you, Captain.”
Before adding: “When visiting Huish Park to pay respects, please ensure you remember to follow the Government’s COVID guidelines. Stay safe.”
And fans were quick to visit the stadium in honour of Collins, who leaves behind his partner Rachel and their three daughters. Police are not treating Collins’ death as suspicious after officers were called to an address in West Coker.

    ED IN THE GAME
Manchester United could welcome back striker Edinson Cavani for their clash with Brighton at Old Trafford this weekend.
The Uruguayan missed all but one of the Red Devils’ five matches before the international break due to injury. But he is now returning to full fitness, much to the relief of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who is suffering a mini crisis among his attacking options.
Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood could all miss the game having picked up injuries, a selection headache that could see Amad Diallo earn his Premier League debut.
Martial is yet to return to training and while Rashford and Greenwood have re-joined the squad, they are not expected to be fit enough to start.
The ever-present Bruno Fernandes will be well rested for this one having returned from international duty early after picking up a suspension for Portugal’s final World Cup qualifier. And Dan James will be hoping to build on his crucial goal for Wales against the Czech Republic earlier this week.
In between the sticks, Solskjaer has a big decision to make between David de Gea and Dean Henderson. Henderson started the six matches before the break, but De Gea is now back in contention having been missing following the birth of his child.

    TIM AND A PLACE
Thomas Tuchel is weighing up several injury risks ahead of Chelsea’s game with West Brom.
The Baggies travel to Stamford Bridge for a 12.30pm kick-off on Saturday before Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Porto.
With that trip to Portugal on the horizon, Chelsea could decide to play it safe with a number of players. Thiago Silva has not played since early February and appears to be nearing a return.
Fans were excited by the 36-year-old Brazilian posting a picture of himself training on Instagram in the week, with the caption: “Happy to be back doing what I love.”
Given his long spell out, Silva may be given a start against West Brom to build his sharpness ahead of Porto.
N’Golo Kante and Jorginho are on the way back from shorter absences, providing Tuchel with another headache. Having suffered a hamstring tweak on France duty, Kante may be held back along with his midfield partner, who hurt his knee in training.
How Chelsea could line up against West Brom
    ‘END SPECULATION’
Former Arsenal Fan TV star Claude Callegari died from natural causes relating to his health, his devastated family have confirmed.
Claude was a regular fixture on the popular YouTube channel before he left the platform last year. He tragically passed away this week aged 58, leading to tributes from both the Arsenal and wider football community.
Speculation about his cause of death had been fuelled by a cryptic post on Twitter two days before his passing, in which Claude wrote: “No one is forcing you to watch it don’t worry I will disappear soon to see my mother then you can all be happy.”
A statement released by the Callegari family read: “My family and I would like to thank everyone for their ongoing support and kind words during this extremely distressing time.
“I am now able to officially confirm that my father passed away from natural causes relating to his health. I hope this will ensure an end to any speculation regarding the matter and our privacy can continue to be respected whilst we make arrangements for his funeral. Thank you.”
Claude was removed from AFTV after a racism storm erupted when he referred to Spurs star Son Heung-min as ‘DVD’ during last summer’s North London derby.

    ‘TIN MAN’
Scott McTominay has revealed his nickname is ‘Tin Man’ within the Manchester United dressing room, NOT ‘McSauce’.
After netting two goals in just three minutes against Leeds back in December, social media exploded as ‘McSauce’ began trending on Twitter.
But the Red Devils midfielder has now confirmed he is known by a different tag with his teammates. Speaking to ESPN, he said: “I don’t know where that originated from. It’s social media isn’t it? I don’t pay attention to Instagram and Twitter. I tend to stay away.
“I’ll give you a nickname, my old reserve team coach Warren Joyce used to call me the Tin Man. So, yeah. Whenever I was growing up, I was really small, then I went really tall all of a sudden.
“It was quite a big change, but I was really like, my legs, I always struggled to move my hips and stuff. Dean Henderson still calls me it, because we were in the same reserve team together so he still calls me Tin Man to this day.
“And the foreign lads are always looking at him like: ‘Are you alright, why are you calling him that?’ So that’s been one for years now. But we don’t need that one to stick, I don’t like it!”

COST AN ARM AND A LEG
The captain’s armband thrown to the floor by Cristiano Ronaldo in last week’s World Cup qualifier has raised £54,000 for charity.
The item was collected from the Red Star Stadium pitch in Belgrade and soon found its way online.
Posted on auction website Limundo, it received huge attention with the proceeds going to charity. The money raised from selling the armband will be sent to Gavril Djurdjevic.
The six-month-old baby lives in the city of Kragujevac and suffers from spinal muscular atrophy. Humanitarian organisation Together for Life is hoping to raise just over £2million to pay for his treatment.
After 408 bids, the auction has ended with £54,000 raised from the buyer.
The armband was picked up from the pitch by a Serbian firefighter, who posed with the piece before the auction closed.

    CUP FOR IT
Fans will have to take THREE Covid tests to watch the first match back at Wembley.
Leicester’s FA Cup semi-final with Southampton a fortnight on Sunday will be used as a test event with a 4,000-strong crowd.
Anyone attending must take a lateral flow test beforehand, provide proof of an official test and take one 24 hours after the game. If everything goes well, around 8,000 fans will be allowed in for Manchester City’s Carabao Cup final against Spurs a week later.
The matches will hopefully pave the way for 20,000 fans to be at Wembley for Euro 2020. Only those living in the borough of Brent will be allowed to attend the Foxes‘ clash against the Saints.
And the majority of tickets for the Carabao Cup final will be given to NHS staff as a thank you for their hard work over the pandemic.
It is understood that local residents would also be in line to attend – putting Spurs supporters at a slight advantage with the game played in the capital.

    SEEING RED
Arsenal are the joint dirtiest team in Premier League history after amassing 98 red cards.
The Gunners have been an ever-present in the glitzy top flight since it was established in 1992.
And research shows the North Londoners – who have been crowned Prem champs three times – are top of the tree for most dismissals alongside Everton. Both sides are just two red cards away from a century.
The Gunners have had numerous hardmen in their ranks over the years, with Patrick Vieira picking up eight red cards during his time in the Prem and Martin Keown given his marching orders six times.
The Toffees’ figures are inflated by the misdemeanors of Scottish hardman and Carlo Ancelotti‘s coach Duncan Ferguson.
The former striker is the Prem’s joint most red-carded player with eight dismissals. Newcastle are third on the list with 87 while Chelsea make it into the top four with 79 red cards.

    NO TAM-ORROW – EXCLUSIVE
Tammy Abraham is back on the comeback trail in his latest bid to beat a persistent ankle injury.
The Chelsea striker resumed training three days ago as he finally hopes to shrug off the problem which has dogged the second half to his season.
Abraham did not feature in any of his club’s seven previous games prior to the international break, hampering his chances of proving himself to new boss Thomas Tuchel.
He has already suffered one setback on the road to recovery when he was forced to abandon training after just five minutes of the warm up.
The injury, which he suffered against Burnley in January, has taken longer than expected to settle down and ruled him out of the England reckoning over the past fortnight.
Abraham, 23, is still a way off full fitness and will not be considered for tomorrow’s Premier League clash at home to West Brom. But it is hoped he can play again within the next two weeks with the possibility of being involved in Chelsea’s FA Cup semi final against Manchester City on April 17.

    COKE RAID
Two men have been arrested after police seized packages branded with Cristiano Ronaldo’s logo containing 50kg of cocaine.
A United States narcotics investigation found £1.5million worth of the illegal drug stashed in a closet in New York. The cocaine was wrapped in packaging marked with the Juventus star’s ‘CR7’ branding.
Police officers found materials persistent with drug trafficking inside an apartment in Queens, including a loaded firearm, $10,000 in cash, and money counting machines.
An investigation led to 43-year-old Christopher Jones being observed as he entered the apartment on Monday afternoon, as confirmed by a US Justice Department statement.
Jones entered the complex empty handed but left with a suitcase and drove away before being arrested.
The suitcase was found to contain approximately $200,000 in cash. Another man, Wykim Williams, was also arrested and there is no suggestion of a link between the raid and Ronaldo.

    KYL-ER BLOW
Kylian Mbappe could be sold for as little as £102million in the summer with Paris Saint-Germain reportedly growing impatient with the striker.
The 22-year-old has just one year left on his deal at Parc des Princes, and it remains to be seen whether he will extend his stay despite the club’s best efforts.
Real Madrid are understood to be weighing up a move for the World Cup winner with boss Zinedine Zidane known to be a huge admirer of his French compatriot.
And Le Parisien have stated that Mbappe could be heading closer to leaving Les Parisiens with the board losing patience with his contract renewal.
They claim that they have lowered their asking price to between £102m-£128m for Mbappe should they decide to cash in on him.
The former Monaco ace hinted that he could quit PSG following France’s three World Cup qualifiers over the international break. He declared that he is growing increasingly infuriated over negative headlines in the French press.

    ‘IT WASN’T ME’
Scott McTominay has revealed he told team-mate Sergio Romero to speak to Lionel Messi about swapping shirts with him.
The Barcelona superstar was given a bloodied nose during a Champions League quarter-final match against Man Utd in 2019, an injury he mistakenly thought was caused by McTominay.
In actual fact, the busted up Argentine had been on the end of a Chris Smalling elbow. And McTominay used Messi’s compatriot Romero to ensure he received Messi’s coveted shirt at full time.
The Scot told the Man Utd club website: “So, whenever we played against him for Barcelona [in 2009], Chris Smalling elbowed him and he’s got blood coming out of his nose. And he thought it was me.
“Because I said to Sergio Romero, ‘please can you ask Messi to get his shirt?’. Sergio comes back in and said, ‘Oh, he thinks you were the one who elbowed him on the halfway line’.
“I said, ‘No, no, no, no – tell him it wasn’t me, so make sure I get that shirt because that’s going in my bedroom’. So he knows it wasn’t me now. Sorry Chrissy, but he was the one who roughed him up a bit.”

    FRENCH CONNECTION
Real Madrid have reportedly set their asking price for Manchester United target Raphael Varane.
Spanish newspaper ABC claim the Spanish side are chasing between £51million and £59m for the French international this summer.
    FRIENDS WITH BEN-EFITS
Benfica have entered the running to sign Sergio Aguero, according to reports in Portugal.
The Argentine, 32, will leave Manchester City in the summer when his contract expires.
A growing number of clubs are linked with offering him a contract, now including Benfica.
According to Portuguese outlet Record, club bosses began formulating a deal to sign Aguero immediately after his exit was announced.
A three-year contract worth around £65,000-a-week, plus a hefty signing-on fee, is reportedly in the works.
    VAZ CHASE
Manchester United and Chelsea could be involved in a transfer fight for Lucas Vazquez after he told Real Madrid he will not sign a new deal, according to reports.
The Spanish wideman, 29, is out of contract at the Bernabeu at the end of the season.
According to ABC in Spain, Vazquez has rejected ‘several’ extensions from Los Blancos – the latest of which was a three-year deal but included a ten per cent pay cut due to the pandemic.
The report states he has made it clear he will refuse to put pen to paper and that could open the floodgates for a battle for his signature.
Premier League giants United and Chelsea are among the frontrunners to bring the nine-cap international in on a free transfer.

    ALL ROADS LEAD TO ROME
Roma could be about to hand Maurizio Sarri a return to management following reports of talks between the two parties.
Paulo Fonseca is set to leave the Serie A club following a disappointing season, and discussions with Sarri began some time ago.
According to Leggo, the 62-year-old was contacted by Roma earlier this year and talks have since accelerated.
Negotiations are described as going well with the ex-Chelsea and Juventus boss said to like the prospect of coaching the Giallorossi.

    MODEL PRO
Chelsea flop Danny Drinkwater’s ex-girlfriend claims she ended their whirlwind 18-month fling to focus on her modelling career.
Carol Tozaki has spoken out about their relationship for the first time – labelling the romance ‘intense’.
Opening up about her romance with the England international, she told Jam Press: “It was such an intense relationship of one-and-a-half years.
“I was together in many important moments of his career.
“I would always have a huge affection for him.
“It was a great time in my life but it was not what I liked to do, so I decided to go out and pursue my modelling profession.”
    REAL PAIN
Sergio Ramos is set to miss the crunch clashes against rivals Liverpool and Barcelona through injury.
The Real Madrid captain, 35, returned from two months out in mid-March but sustained another problem representing Spain on Wednesday night.
Los Blancos said: “After the tests carried out today on our captain Sergio Ramos by the Real Madrid medical services, he was diagnosed with a muscle injury in the internal twin of his left leg.”
Ramos will undergo further examination and although no timescale has been given on his absence, he is expected to be out for a month, according to Marca.
    NOT WANDA FUL
Mauro Icardi left wife Wanda Nara unimpressed with an Instagram post dubbing her his ‘female dog’.
In a shot of the couple and their pet mutt, the Paris Saint-Germain forward, 28, left an eyebrow-raising caption.
He wrote ‘mi Perro y mi Perra’ with dog emojis, which roughly translates into ‘my dog and my female dog’.
Wanda, 34, left a side-eye emoji on her reply, which read: “How funny.”

    NOU ADVENTURE

    COVIDIOTS
Juventus stars Weston McKennie, Paulo Dybala and Arthur are reportedly in hot water for breaking Covid rules and attending a party.
The trio are all set to be fined by the club after American McKennie, 22, defied restrictions to hold the bash at his home last night.
That is according to La Stampa, who report that the former Schalke midfielder partied with his team-mates and around 17 other pals.

    NO TIM FOR JOKES
Timo Werner has been made an ‘honourary North Macedonian citizen’ with his own hilarious fake ID card.
The Germany striker, 25, fluffed his lines in embarrassing fashion to produce a horror miss on Wednesday.
His almighty blunder proved costly as Joachim Low’s side lost 2-1 at home to North Macedonia – their first defeat in a World Cup qualifier since the 5-1 loss to England in 2001.
And it did not take long for one North Macedonian newspaper to rub in the mockery after a famous victory.
The photoshopped ID includes his name, a headshot picture of the striker, his Macedonian nationality and a child-like ‘TW’ scrawled in the signature box.
The date of issue was March 31, 2021 – the day of the match – and expires in ten years.

    RIP LEE
Yeovil Town have announced the sad news that their captain Lee Collins had died aged 32.
A statement read on the club’s website: “All at Yeovil Town Football Club are mourning the loss of club captain Lee Collins.
“Lee sadly passed away yesterday and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. We ask everyone to respect the family’s privacy at this time.
“The club will make no further comment at this time. Our game with Altrincham tomorrow has been postponed.”
Collins started his career with Wolves, coming through their youth system before making his debut in 2007.

    ED HEADHUNTS
Arsenal technical chief Edu will aid the search for a new manager to replace Joe Montemurro as boss of the Gunners’ WSL side.
Montemurro, 51, revealed he will be leaving the club at the end of the season after joining in 2017.
Although Arsenal say they are “disappointed” with his decision to depart, officials have begun the hunt for his successor immediately.
And club chief, Vinai Venkatesham said he will be involved in the process, alongside Edu and Clare Wheatley, Gunners head of women’s football and their people director Karen Ann Joesphides.
Venkatesham, 40, said: “In terms of process, there will be a few of us involved to find Joe’s replacement.
“We will have the management of Arsenal Women, our people director, our technical director, Edu, and of course I’ll be involved in the process.”

    FER REAL
Rio Ferdinand revealed he can’t hate Sergio Aguero despite the departing Manchester City star crushing Manchester United’s title dreams in 2012 with that legendary goal.
City announced Aguero will leave the club after a decade when his contract expires at the end of the season and Ferdinand took to Instagram to share his thoughts.
The BT Sport pundit revealed he is still haunted by the goal that gave noisy neighbours City their first ever Prem title – with United thinking they had done enough after winning their last game.
Ferdinand wrote: “Agueroooooooooooo. This name, this goal, this moment still hits me at times when I least expect it like a bolt out the blue! Our closest rivals just across the city, snatching the PL title from out of our hands – bearing in mind our game had just finished and we had won our game…
“What was the score in City’s game…they need a goal with seconds to go….surely we have won…I think we have done it…..then….Agueroooooooooo. Absolutely floored, distraught, devastated….a whole season demolished in the final seconds of the last game.
“What I will say is that as much as I hated the outcome I never hated (or disliked) Sergio for his moment – like I thought I would.”

    PS-FLEE
Kylian Mbappe has dropped a transfer bombshell by hinting he could quit Paris Saint-Germain over increasing criticism in France.
The superstar winger, 22, took the flak after his national side edged out Bosnia 1-0 in a drab display. It came on the back of a 1-1 draw with Ukraine and a far-from-convincing 2-0 win over minnows Kazakhstan in which he missed a penalty.
Mbappe’s future had already been called into question with his contract with the French giants expiring next summer. And he admitted he is growing increasingly infuriated over negative headlines in the French press.
As reported by Mundo Deportivo, he said: “After a while, of course criticism tires, especially when you play for a team from your country and you give everything for your team as well.
“In the end all this tires. Playing for France is different for those who come from abroad. I am here all the time, playing for PSG and with the French national team.
“It’s a different context and I knew it when I signed for PSG. We’ll see later. Could this influence my decision to stay at PSG in the summer? Of course. But it’s not just that. The most important thing is to feel good where you are and have fun every day.”

    RED HOT FORM
Bruno Fernandes has felt the wrath of David De Gea as the Manchester United goalkeeper gained Twitter revenge on his team-mate.
The Portuguese midfielder took to social media this morning to share a snap of him wearing a blue and white striped shirt and jeans while enjoying a coffee.
Pictured with a huge smile on his face, Fernandes captioned it with: “Ok, morning coffee is over… Q&A time… Who’s got a question? #AskBruno.”
That led to a cheeky response from United goalkeeper De Gea, who could not resist asking: “Are you a model?”
His good-natured shot comes in response to Fernandes taking aim at the stopper over the international break.

    UP FOR THE CUP
Leicester’s clash with Southampton has been selected as the FA Cup semi-final that will have 4,000 spectators.
But the crowd at Wembley on April 18 will be restricted to local residents living in the borough of Brent.
And the decision means the tie between Chelsea and Manchester City the previous evening will be played behind closed doors.
The FA asked the Government to be allowed to use one of the semi-finals as part of the ‘pilot’ programme ahead of the May 17 date for the return of crowds of up to 10,000.
That was signed off by the DCMS but Brent Council asked for its residents to be the ones given access on safety grounds as a condition of green-lighting the trial.
It is likely that health service and local authority employees will be invited to walk through the turnstiles, rather than fans of either side who happen to live in the borough.

    FAMILY FEARS
Cristiano Ronaldo’s mum revealed her ten-year-old grandson Cristiano Jr begged her: “Grandma don’t die.”
Dolores Aveiro also confessed she was so unsure she would pull through after her stroke the first thing she did when she woke up was tell her eldest daughter Elma the code for the safe where she kept her valuables.
The 66-year-old, who was rushed to hospital in her native island of Madeira last spring, said in an emotional TV interview in which she broke down in tears: “I saw all my children cry, although they didn’t want to worry me.
“I’ve been operated on both breasts and that was never as hard as this has been.
“When Cristianinho saw me cry so much, he told me, ‘Grandma don’t die.’
“It moved me. When he phones he always asks me if I’m better. I live for my family, especially my grandchildren.”

    GOONER BE GREAT
Arsenal fans may be able to dream of the club landing Duvan Zapata after the striker opened the door to a Premier League move.
The Atalanta star, 30, has been a Serie A mainstay since signing for Napoli in 2013.
But a move to England could be on the cards after he revealed his love for watching Prem matches while growing up in Colombia.
And Arsenal‘s interest may well be piqued by his past Gooner tendencies.
When asked by La Gazzetta dello Sport about a switch to England, Zapata replied: “In football, never say never. As a boy in Colombia, the Premier League was shown the most. I supported Arsenal and woke up early on the weekend to watch their games on TV.”
Zapata has hit 14 goals for Atalanta this season as the Bergamo club continue their impressive assault on the Champions League.

    SOME MIGHT SAY
Noel Gallagher has called out Sir Alex Ferguson after the Scot claimed the signing of Phil Jones was better than City’s capture of Sergio Aguero.
The Oasis founder chuckled as he recalled what Fergie had said when the players signed for the two Manchester clubs.
City fan Noel, 53, said: “I remember we signed Aguero at the same time United signed Phil Jones and Sir Alex claimed that Jones would prove to be the best centre half in the world within a year or two.
“He also pointed to the Aguero signing and said ‘City have been reckless again in the transfer market’.
“One has gone on to be a club legend, scoring goal after goal and winning trophy after trophy and there is even talk of a statue outside the ground. I don’t think we’ll be seeing a statue of Phil Jones at Old Trafford anytime soon.”
Both players arrived in Manchester in 2011. Aguero, aged 32, cost £35million from Atletico Madrid, while Utd paid Blackburn £16.5m for Jones, 29.

    KOP THAT
Liverpool’s owners have confirmed a £543million investment from RedBird Capital and have welcomed NBA legend LeBron James to their ownership group.
The basketball superstar, 36, has owned a two per cent stake in the Premier League champions since 2011. Now James has upped his stake in Liverpool after becoming a partner in their American ownership group Fenway.
The company also own legendary baseball team Boston Red Sox. John Henry remains in charge at Fenway Sports with Tom Werner the second largest shareholder.
The pair approved a new £543m investment from RedBird Capital, who became the third largest shareholders in Fenway Sports Group.
The champions are now hopeful the deal will help bring some financial stability after an estimated £120m loss in revenues since the coronavirus outbrreak.
It is also expected to help secure the redevelopment of the Anfield Road Stand, which is currently in the process of gaining planning permission, to increase capacity at the Reds’ iconic home to 61,000.

    ERLI FLIGHT
Barcelona could be set to steal a march in the race for Erling Haaland after the player’s representatives began talks with the club.
On Thursday morning, the striker’s dad and advisor Alf-Inge Haaland and agent Mino Raiola were spotted at Barcelona airport.
According to Spanish outlet Sport, the pair were then whisked away in a car driven by club president Joan Laporta’s right-hand man.
The newly-elected Barcelona chief hinted at a move for the Borussia Dortmund striker before winning the post last month. The club is dealing with a difficult financial situation while also attempting to renew Lionel Messi’s contract, which expires in June.
But reports suggest Raiola and Laporta hold a strong working relationship, potentially standing them in good stead to win the race for Haaland.
SunSport revealed this week that a deal to sign the 20-year-old could cost as much as £300million. That includes a £150m transfer fee and a five-year contract featuring £600,000-a-week wages.

    LUKE-ING GOOD FOR UNITED
Alex Telles says competition for the left-back spot at Manchester United can only be a good thing.
He said: “When you’ve got a situation like that, then the team can only benefit from it.
“And it’s Man Utd that wins from that [situation].
“In terms of the two of us, we both motivate each other and push each other further forward and we help each other.
“That’s really, really important throughout the team, independent of the positions we play.”
    FOR BUK’S SAKE
Bukayo Saka is yet to return to training, according to Mikel Arteta.
The Arsenal winger was pulled out of England duty with an injury and Arteta said he still has a way to go.
He said: “He hasn’t trained with the team yet.
“He’s been doing some individual work. We had to pull him out of the England squad, unfortunately.
“He’s feeling better, but he hasn’t trained with the team yet.”

But a dreadful error from John Stones in possession allowed Poland’s Jakub Moder to equalise.
Stones, however, atoned for his mistake by heading across the goal for Harry Maguire to half volley home.
    THAT’s ALL FOR TONIGHT
England get off to the perfect start in their World Cup qualification, winning all three of their opening games.

Big decisions to be made…. but for now, it’s back to league football and hoping no first teamers get injured!
    Goodnight!
     MAGIC MAGUIRE
TWO assists for John Stones, then – one for Poland’s equaliser and one for England’s winner.
Gareth Southgate had regarded Stones’ resurgence at Manchester City as a game-changer, allowing him to rip up his unpopular back five and pair him with Man United captain Harry Maguire in a flat back four.

    POST-MATCH CONFERENCE
Tune into Harry Maguire’s post-match press conference!

    SOUTHGATE SPEAKS
England boss Gareth Southgate gave his assessment to ITV: “We were very good in the first half and in control of the game.
“Obviously to concede a goal like we did can hit the team, but they stuck at it, recovered their composure, and it was an important set-play winner.”
On Stones, he said: “John Stones has managed to compose himself for the rest of the game and had a part in the winning goal.
“You can fold in those moments and he didn’t. He’s been having a really good season.
“Everybody’s got a lot to play for, for the Euros. We did a lot of good things this week but there is still a step to go.
“Fatigue was starting to tell but the players stuck at it and they deserved the win.”
    MATCH WINNER MAGUIRE
Match winner Harry Maguire spoke to ITV after the game: “Of course it’s a big win.
“We’re playing to play at a World Cup. We started the game well but in the second half didn’t start well at all. The first 15-20 minutes they were the better team and put us under pressure.
“It’s nice to get the victory, nine points after a tough camp, three games in a short space of time, and we’ve got a lot of players injured as well. John Stones has been brilliant this year.
“We’re defenders and when we make mistakes we are scrutinised.

“We’re not perfect! John has made a little blip tonight but he’ll come back strong.”

    COULD NKETIAH BE THE DIFFERENCE?

THE U21s POOR FORM AT THE EUROS

    THE CROATS HAVE ARRIVED!

    CONOR GALLAGHER ON BOOTHROYD
“Aidy has been brilliant, he is keeping us positive and keeping us believing even when it is hard to.
“When our heads have dropped he and the staff have all been there. Hopefully, we can win for us and for them as well.”
BOOTHROYD ON THE ROLE OF THE U21S
“The only team that needs to win is the senior team. Everywhere else, winning is part of it, drawing is part of it and having adversity is part of it.
“The reason I say that it is the utterly impossible job is because new players come in, younger players come in and the wheel starts again.
“My job isn’t to say to Gareth we should have Jude, Phil or Mason, it is about the senior team and it always will be.
“If someone is doing this job and hiding players and not allowing them to go forward then the system is flawed. I don’t want to be the whinge bag to defend myself. They are facts but they are what the job is.”
    BOOTHROYD ON THE U21 JOB
“I know the senior men’s job has been called the impossible job but the Under-21s is the utterly impossible job. The reason is the amount of players who have to be produced for the senior team and we are expected to win.
“There’s a reason why we haven’t won this for 37 years and why we haven’t progressed as much as we thought we would, because our primary aim is to get players through to Gareth” (Southgate).
    BISCAN ON ENGLAND U21s
“We will not change the concept, we will be patient and we will not leave space for the English, who are excellent one-on-one.
“Our collective defence will have to quell their individual quality. It will be a competitive match. We will keep and eye and ear on the other match and react accordingly.”
NKETIAH ON PRESSURE ON THE BOSS
“That’s on all of us, you know. We’re all to blame for that. We all had sloppy moments in the game and it’s just about cutting that out and playing to the best of our ability.
“We know we have the quality and we have shown in qualifying that we can score goals, so it’s about producing that here and – like I said – taking that bit of extra care and detail with the final pass.”
    NKETIAH ON ENGLAND
“Against Switzerland, we had a lot more of the ball and probably just lacked that penetration, but in the Portugal game, I think, in the transitional moments, the final pass we failed to take full advantage of.
“It’s been a disappointing first two games. We all know that. It’s just about keeping our heads up and challenging ourselves to finish strongly in the Croatia game.”
    CROATIA U21 BENCH

    Semper, 4. Colina, 5. Erlic, 6. Nejasmic, 9. Kulenovic, 10. Majer, 13. Zaper, 15. Krizmanic, 18. Divkovic, 19. Vuk, 20. Musa, 23. Nevistic

    CROATIA U21 STARTING XI
Looks like Igor Biscan has opted for a 4-2-3-1 this afternoon:
    12. Kostarski, 2. Sverko 22. Vuskovic, 16. Franjic, 11. Branaric, 8. Moro, 3. Babec, 7. Ivanusec, 21. Spikic, 17. Bistrovic, 14. Vizinger
    PREVIOUS MEETINGS CONTINUED
England won the two previous competitive matches between the sides 2-1, those games coming in the play-offs for the 2015 final tournament.
Harry Kane was on target in the first in Wolverhampton as the home side came from behind to win on 10 October 2014; four days later, Will Hughes got England’s winner in Vinkovci, Croatia bowing out despite Marko Livaja finding the net in each game.
Croatia have won both friendlies between the sides, 3-0 in London in August 2003 – Goran Ljubojević scoring twice – and 1-0 in April 1996.
Rhian Brewster scored a hat-trick in England’s 5-0 win against Croatia in an Under-17 friendly at the Stadion Aldo Drosina in Pula on 28 September 2016. Callum Hudson-Odoi was a second-half substitute for Aidy Boothroyd’s side, while Bartol Franjić featured for Croatia.
Moro’s goal was not enough to prevent Croatia suffering a 2-1 group stage defeat against England at the 2016 European U19 Championship group stage; Ivanušec was also on the losing side.
    PREVIOUS MEETINGS
The teams also met in the third round of group games in Italy two years ago, when both had already been eliminated having lost their first two Group C matches.
Croatia came from behind three times to earn a share of the spoils, goals from Josip Brekalo (39, 82) and Nikola Vlašić (62) cancelling out strikes by Reiss Nelson (11 pen), James Maddison (48) and Jonjo Kenny (70).
Moro, Lovro Majer and Kulenović all started for Croatia with Luka Ivanušec a second-half substitute and Kristijan Bistrović and Adrian Šemper unused replacements. Lloyd Kelly played the 90 minutes for England.
That meant England finished third in the section, above Croatia on goal difference.
    LINKS AND TRIVIA
Croatia coach Bišćan, who replaced Nenad Gračan on 1 October 2019, played for Liverpool from 2000 to 2005, scoring three goals in 117 appearances in all competitions.
He was part of the side that won the FA Cup and English League Cup in 2000/01, the UEFA Super Cup the same year and, in 2004/05, the UEFA Champions League, making nine appearances in the latter campaign.
    CROATIA U21 FORM GUIDE
All three of Croatia’s U21 EURO final appearances have ended in the group stage. In 2019, they finished bottom of Group C behind Romania, France (both seven points) and England (1). Nenad Gračan’s side lost to Romania (1-4) and France (0-1) before that 3-3 draw against England.
That 2019 appearance ended Croatia’s 15-year wait to feature in the final tournament; the previous appearance had come in 2004 when, as on their 2000 debut, they finished bottom of their section having failed to win a game, drawing one and losing two on each occasion.
Croatia’s record in the finals group stage is now W1 D3 L7 F14 A22. In qualifying for the 2021 tournament, Igor Bišćan’s side finished second in Group 4 a point behind the Czech Republic, taking 20 points from their ten games (W6 D2 L2).
Croatia were unbeaten in their last six qualifiers (W4 D2), a 10-0 defeat of San Marino in Zagreb on 8 October 2020 the team’s biggest ever victory.
    GROUP D TABLE

    ENGLAND FORM GUIDE CONTINUED
    Champions in 1982 and 1984, England also reached the semi-finals in 1978, 1980, 1986 and 1988.
England have won only three of their last 18 group games at the finals (D5 L10) and none of the last five (D1 L4).
In qualifying for these finals Boothroyd – who has been in charge since 2016 – oversaw an unbeaten campaign, England winning nine of their ten fixtures to finish on 28 points, ten clear of Austria at the top of Group 3.
England have reached each of the last four U21 final tournaments without losing a game. Their last qualifying defeat was a 2-1 loss in Belgium on 14 November 2011; their subsequent record is W37 D6.
Eddie Nketiah was the top scorer in qualifying overall with 13 goals. He is England’s all-time U21 top scorer on 16.

    KIR BLIMEY
Liverpool have reportedly made Turkey goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir a summer target – after he impressed while they scouting Erling Haaland.
Trabzonspor goalie Cakir, 24, was between the sticks for Turkey’s 3-0 win in Saturday’s World Cup qualifier against Norway.
Sabah Sport claims Liverpool had scouts in attendance to watch Borussia Dortmund sensation Haaland, 20.
But Cakir was in fine form to deny the striker his usual goal and the Reds reportedly added the £14.5million stopper to their summer shortlist.

    NO KANE DO
Arsene Wenger has told Harry Kane he can fulfil his ambition of winning trophies at Tottenham as he urged him to stay.
He told beIN Sports: “Tottenham are in a position where they can be ambitious and we should maybe not judge only today’s situation.
“Tottenham was top of the league in December. There were a few times when they were top of the league when I was still at Arsenal.
“He is the only one who can assess the situation. A player like that is always solicited by other clubs and always has to assess his situation.
“He was until now a real top leader at Tottenham. He’s a top leader in the English national team. I respect highly his commitment and his quality.
“What I like today is he could play basically as a number 10 because the quality of his assists and the speed of his vision, and the execution of his speed on long balls is exceptional.”
    MOR THE MERRIER
Barcelona are prioritising sealing a new deal for wonderkid Ilaix Moriba over signing Georginio Wijnaldum, according to reports.
Boss Ronald Koeman is set to try and reshape his squad this summer, as Barca aim to rebuild following a tumultuous 18 months.
But according to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona’s limited funds are more likely to be allocated elsewhere.
Club chiefs, with Koeman’s blessing, are desperate to renew wonderkid Moriba’s deal in the coming months.
At 18, the supremely gifted midfielder has already become a trusted member of Koeman’s squad, having made his LaLiga debut last month.
    BURCH BELLS
Exclusive by Tom Barclay: Aston Villa have moved into pole position to snap up Bournemouth whizkid Ajani Burchall.
The Bermudan winger, 16, is set to leave the Cherries in the summer after snubbing a scholarship deal.
Arsenal have shown interest, but it is Villa who now look most likely to sign the school boy.
Burchall became Bournemouth’s third youngest ever player when making his debut as a late sub in December’s 5-0 win over Huddersfield.

    GDANSK ALL NIGHT
UEFA chiefs are ready to let travelling fans into the Champions League and Europa League finals.
And that is potentially great news for supporters of the five English teams left in Europe.
A meeting of Uefa’s ruling executive committee formally lifted the 30 per cent capacity cap on fans that was put in place in October, allowing local authorities the right to set stadium limits for the rest of this season.
Away fans remain banned for the remaining games in the last eight and semi-final stages of both competitions, which resume next week.
But Uefa will review the measures ahead of the two finals, due to be played in Gdansk and Istanbul at the end of May.

SunSport exclusively revealed that LaLiga giants Barcelona are set to go all-out to try and land the legendary City forward.

We take a look at seven of those who have done so HERE.

The midfielder, 21, has impressed on loan spells at Charlton, Swansea and most recently fighting relegation with West Brom.
According to Goal, he is well liked by the Blues hierarchy and has a good chance of being involved next season.
Ousting N’Golo Kante or Mateo Kovacic is a lot to ask although a potential move away for Jorginho may open up a space.

Pogba’s deal expires in June 2022 and Sky Sport Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has claimed Juventus remains the star’s ‘preferred destination’.
Despite the Serie A giants attempting to lower their wage bill, with Cristiano Ronaldo rumoured to be available, they hope to thrash out a deal for the 28-year-old.

The French hitman is on the radar of some of Europe’s biggest clubs after four impressive years at Parkhead.
Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claims Edouard could have ended up at the San Siro as back-up to Belgian goal machine Romelu Lukaku.
He told GiveMeSport: “Last summer, he was close to leaving Celtic.

“He had really important bids, he decided to stay, but now it’s time to decide for a new club.Let’s see if the right bid arrives because you have to obviously respect Celtic, they are doing an amazing job with him.
“I’m told that in the last days of the last summer window, Inter were thinking of Edouard as an opportunity, as a backup option for Lukaku.
“That was impossible because Celtic wanted a permanent deal and they were offering a loan with buy option.
Romano also revealed that Roma are interested in signing Edouard.
