Alexander-Arnold OUT of Euro 2020 for England, Cristiano Ronaldo set for record haul with Portugal

TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD has been ruled out of Euro 2020 due to the injury he sustained against Austria. Bukayo Saka scored the only goal as the Three Lions secured a victory at the Riverside.
And Scotland earned a commendable draw against the Netherlands as Memphis Depay equalised for the Dutch in the last minute.

    LUK OUT INTER
Christian Eriksen could attract interest from top clubs around Europe if he impresses with Denmark at the Euros, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
Eriksen’s suitors are currently being put off by his hefty salary, with the midfielder earning €7 million [£6million] annually, as per his contract with Inter.
Things could change if the 29-year-old succeeded with Kasper Hjulmand’s side, who are drawn in Group B alongside Russia, Finland and Romelu Lukaku’s Belgium.
Lukaku is another player who could force Inter to change their transfer plans if he succeeds with Roberto Martinez and co.
The 28-year-old yesterday assured reporters he would stay at Inter, but the Nerazzurri would have a difficult decision to make if somebody came in with an offer above €100m [£85m].
Elsewhere, Ivan Perisic and Marcelo Brozovic also have uncertain futures as they prepare to represent Croatia, with both players out of contract in the summer of 2022.
    ‘SELFISH’
Former England striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has criticised Jordan Henderson’s failure to step aside from the Euro 2020 squad due to his current injury situation.
The Liverpool skipper has not played since mid-February after picking up a groin problem, but was one of several recovering players named in England’s final 26-man group by Gareth Southgate on Tuesday afternoon.
He told talkSPORT: “The thing that is really winding me up is the Henderson thing.
“He should just be honest with the manager now and say: ‘You know what, I am struggling here. I’m a leader and a captain in myself, I’ll do the right thing for the squad’.
“Bring in whoever you have to bring in as another central midfielder because this injury is playing up now. I think [Henderson] is being selfish.
“If you look at it, the squad has been announced and he told Southgate he is not fit. They said the scans have come back and they’re fine, but he knows himself that there is a niggle he is feeling.
“The tournament starts in ten days, you are playing against Croatia, playing against a good team. You need to be at it, you need a training session before the game, you need some games in you.”
    ‘CLEVER FOOTBALLER’
Sven Goran Eriksson believes that Jesse Lingard should have been included in the 26-man England squad for the upcoming European Championships.
The 28-year-old has undergone a tremendous career turnaround since joining West Ham United on loan from Manchester United in January.
Lingard was included in Gareth Southgate’s preliminary squad for the Euros but was cut when the final list was announced.
Eriksson was shocked at Lingard’s omission, with the former England manager questioning current boss Gareth Southgate’s decision.
He told talkSPORT: “It’s a surprise that Lingard’s not there because even to have him on the bench with his pace and one-on-one ability, he’s a clever footballer.
“He had a good season with West Ham. I didn’t see him play every game, but the games I saw he has been very good.
“It’s always difficult. In the end, you can only pick the number [of players] that you’re allowed to pick. Someone will be disappointed – it’s always like that.”
    PALM OFF
Chelsea defender Emerson Palmieri has encouraged reporters to stop discussing his future amid reports he could join Inter.
The Serie A winners Inter are interested in signing the full-back after identifying him as their main target for the left wing-back spot.
Emerson is out of favour in West London and is expected to leave Chelsea, with only one year left on his contract.
However, the 26-year-old told reporters at a press conference today (via TuttoMercatoWeb): “Lots of people are talking about my return to Serie A, but I don’t even want to think about it at the moment.
“I’m honestly not interested, I’m living in the present and I want to focus on playing Euro 2020 and winning it.
“I’m living my dream of playing in the Euros, it’s always been my aim to get here. Now I’m at this level but I’m not satisfied, I want to give my best and win the Euros.”

    BORN TO PLAY
Rangers defender Borna Barisic has made his return to action after a month on the sidelines, playing all 90 minutes as England’s Euro 2020 rivals Croatia drew 1-1 with Armenia.
Barisic last featured for Steven Gerrard’s side in the 4-1 Old Firm thrashing of bitter rivals Celtic on May 2, limping off with 15 minutes left of the Ibrox win.
The Rangers star has cemented his place as Croatia’s first-choice at left-back in recent years and will be hoping to bring the curtain down on a fantastic campaign with international success.
Before Euro 2020 gets underway, there’s one more friendly for Barisic and co – away to Belgium on Sunday.
    ENGLAND PAIN
Gary Lineker has shared his sorrow at the news Trent Alexander-Arnold will miss the Euros.
Much was made over whether the Liverpool full-back would be selected, and Lineker feels he will be missed by England.
The Three Lions still have three other right-backs to call upon and Alexander-Arnold’s absence could pave the way for another player to come into squad.
Jesse Lingard must fancy his chances after being named in the starting line-up against Austria on Wednesday.
Lineker said: “What a blow for Trent Alexander-Arnold and England. Losing the best attacking right back in World football is such a shame.”

    NOT TRENT TO BE
Trent Alexander-Arnold has been ruled out of Euro 2020 and will depart England’s camp on Thursday night.
A medical assessment earlier in the day revealed that the Liverpool defender, 22, had suffered a grade two quad tear during England’s 1-0 friendly win over Austria.
The scan confirmed the devastated defender’s worst fears and he will now withdraw from England’s squad for the tournament. He faces a recovery period of between four to six weeks.
Southgate is expected to call up an additional player to replace Alexander-Arnold in England’s 26-man squad.
Jesse Lingard, James Ward-Prowse, Ollie Watkins, Aaron Ramsdale, Ben Godfrey and Ben White were all cut from England’s Euro 2020 squad earlier this week.

    ‘IT’S REALLY DEVASTATING’
Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka told his post-match press conference that ‘it’s a shame’ that Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold suffered an injury yesterday.
The Arsenal teenager scored for England on Wednesday as they beat Austria 1-0 in an international friendly, with both Saka and Liverpool’s academy product putting in strong performances on the night.
But just towards the end of the game, as Alexander-Arnold kicked the ball away, he seemingly felt something in his thigh or hamstring and had to go off.
Speaking about the injury, Saka said: “It’s really devastating.
“I think he’s worked hard to earn his spot here and he deserves it. He had a really good game tonight.
“It’s a shame that it ended that way and I am just hoping that it’s not too serious. But we have to wait and see.”

    ENGLAND UNITED
Manchester United’s players are due to join the group on Thursday, with Luke Shaw, Dean Henderson and Marcus Rashford joining up along with injured Harry Maguire following the Europa League final loss to Villarreal.
Chelsea and Manchester City are set to follow in the coming days after last Saturday’s Champions League final clash in Porto as preparations continue at England’s north-east base ahead of Sunday’s final friendly against Romania.
“All the (omitted) players are going to stay with us through to the end of Sunday’s game anyway,” Gareth Southgate said. “Obviously we’ll make an assessment on the whole squad once we’ve got through that game.
“I’m very conscious we’ve got another 90 minutes to get through and that alone is a bit of a challenge for us, really.”
    MAGIC CR7
Records Ronaldo could break at EURO 2020
    Most finals campaigns
Seventeen men have appeared in four EURO tournaments, beginning with Lothar Matthäus and Peter Schmeichel back in 2000.
Ronaldo is among them and he will strike out alone if he features this summer. He is the last man standing of the 11 who notched up number four in 2016.
    Most finals goals
Ronaldo marked his EURO debut against Greece on 12 June 2004 with a goal – his first for Portugal! – and has since registered eight more across 21 finals appearances.
A tally of nine means he heads into UEFA EURO 2020 level with France’s Michel Platini, whose goals all came at EURO ’84.
    Most appearances (including qualifying)
Ronaldo needs three more appearances to surpass Gianluigi Buffon’s all-time high of 58 appearances in EURO competition, qualifying and finals – the 36-year-old could end the tournament on 63 matches.
His 56 to date have resulted in 36 wins, 12 draws and eight defeats.
58 Gianluigi Buffon (Italy)56 Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal)51 Mario Frick (Liechtenstein)
    Oldest scorer in a final
Just one player aged over 30 has scored in a EURO final.
Bernd Hölzenbein was 30 years and 103 days old when he headed West Germany’s late equaliser against Czechoslovakia in 1976 to prompt extra time and, ultimately, a penalty shoot-out win.
Ronaldo will be aged 36 years and 156 days on 11 July, date of the EURO 2020 decider.
    HOLD UP
Dutch football fans were confused and worried after manager Frank de Boer’s slip of the tongue.
The Holland boss made a major gaffe when answering questions after the 2-2 draw with Scotland.
De Boer was asked about his team’s 5-3-2 formation and who he would play down the right flank with the Euros looming.
And the Holland manager’s answer left people scratching their heads.
De Boer said: “Queensy Menig could possibly go there, of course.”
But the 25-year-old FC Twente winger isn’t even in De Boer’s final squad for the Euros.
Dutch media report that the manager must have been referring to Quincy Promes.
But it still left some supporters worried ahead of this summer’s tournament.
One tweeted: “A dismal coaching record after Ajax, poor communication skills, and very little self-reflection makes him the least likely to succeed Oranje manager – ever. But stranger things have happened.”

    TIPS FOR EU
The wait is almost over – Euro 2020 starts on June 11.
The cream of the crop from around Europe are set to battle it out over a frantic four-week schedule, culminating in a final showdown at Wembley.
    Tournament winners
It’s tough to split the top five in the market, with France, England, Belgium, Germany and Spain the front runners.
But we feel this youthful England side is a couple of years too early to end all those years of hurt – and therefore our pick for overall winner are reigning world champions France (9/2).
    Top goalscorer
There’s a clear front-runner in the market here – and Harry Kane deserves to be.
The 2018 World Cup Golden Boot winner was the top scorer in this season’s Premier League with 23 goals.
    Player of the tournament
Beaten semi-finalists in the World Cup three years ago, Belgium have the market leader for player of the tournament in their ranks.
they will look to former Man Utd and Chelsea forward Romelu Lukaku for goals.
The 28-year-old striker has been a revelation for Inter Milan since heading to Italy, netting over 60 times in two seasons.
At a whopping 20/1, he’s a real value bet in this market.
    IT’LL BE AL-RIGHT
John Barnes believes England’s incredible depth at right-back will significantly lessen the blow of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s injury.
He told BonusCodeBets.co.uk: “I’ve never known such a fervour about one position on a football pitch before Trent got injured – and you could say it is probably lucky we already had three others in the squad!
“He is one of our best right-backs, but we have so many options in that position, so it’s actually not a great loss to England.
“It’s obviously extremely sad for Trent and I feel for him – but we have so much cover there, so it should not be detrimental to England’s chances.
“If Harry Kane limped off against Austria, I’d be sitting here being far more concerned for England.
“It’s also lucky for Liverpool that this bad-looking injury has happened in the off-season.”

    GERMAN ENGINEERING
The Germans have scored some sensational goals down the years at the Euros.
Do you guys think they’ll be big contenders once again this summer?

    SPURS OF THE MOMENT
French Spurs stars Hugo Lloris and Moussa Sissoko caught up with Joe Rodon last night.
The trio all featured as France comfortably beat Wales 3-0 as both sides gear up for Euro 2020.
Lloris made history, by earning his 100th cap as captain of Les Bleus, and 124th in total.

    SON BURNED
Son Heung-min hit out after being grilled over Tottenham team-mate Harry Kane’s future.
The South Korean forward insisted the pair are both only focused on international duty – with Kane set to skipper England at Euro 2020.
The Spurs striker, 27, has been linked with a £150m move to Man Utd or Man City in a bid to win trophies.
And if Kane leaves North London this summer it would end a brilliant partnership with Son – who he broke a record with in March when they combined for a 14th goal of the season.
But Son, 28, was in no mood to discuss Kane’s potential transfer when asked by reporters while on international duty.
He snapped back: “Has Kane moved already?
“Everything is not decided. Rather than worrying about his transfer, I am doing my best at Tottenham.
“I want to focus on the national team and Tottenham. Maybe Kane is doing the same, he is busy preparing for the Euros.”

    FOR GOODNESS SAK
    By SunSport’s Duncan Wright
Bukayo Saka admits being England’s Mr Versatile can get tough – despite shining for the Three Lions and firing them to victory over Austria.
Saka, 19, scored his first senior international goal to seal the win and stake a claim for involvement when the Euros start next weekend.
The Arsenal star also ended up playing in three different positions to suit Gareth Southgate’s tactics and substitutions at the Riverside, to show just how capable he is as a footballer.
But the teenager admits constantly switching roles can cause problems and he needs the help of senior players to make sure he stays switched on.
Saka said: “It’s not easy all the time, you know.
“The information I get from the coaching staff and the players  makes things much easier – all the communication from the more experienced players around me like Kieron Trippier, Conor Coady, Tyrone Mings, making sure I’m where I need to be.”
“I feel like anytime I played for England I really enjoyed myself because of the quality and the top players you have around.
“Things feel good, things flow, I always feel like I can I can express myself and I think I did that.
“I can learn a bit from everyone, there’s so much different quality players especially in attack but even in the midfield and defence you know there’s so much experience I can take from everyone to try to speak to everyone and get some advice from them.”

    ON THIS DAY
It’s 21 years since two-time Euros winner Iker Casillas made his debut for Spain.
The ex-Real Madrid goalkeeper captained his nation to glory in 2008 and 2012.
He also captained them to their maiden World Cup triumph in 2010.
    Legend of the game!

ICYMI – EXCLUSIVE BY CHARLIE WYETT
Harry Maguire revealed he has only just started light training in his race to be fit for the Euros.
And the Man United captain is set to miss England’s opening game against Croatia on June 13.
Maguire said: “I have done little bits of running.
“I don’t want to aggravate it too early as we still have nearly two weeks until the first game and it is a long tournament.
“I am taking it day by day. I have not asked for a time-frame but I am looking forward to being involved.
“It can improve dramatically in a few days and you can have little setbacks.”

JUST FOR THE SAK OF IT
Bukayo Saka netted his first international goal, as England defeated Austria 1-0 in Middlesbrough last night.
Let’s take you back through the action, with the official match highlights, as both teams gear up for Euro 2020.

    ‘DON’T UNDERSTAND’
England manager Gareth Southgate has criticised the fans that booed Three Lions stars taking a knee before last night’s match with Austria.
He said: “It’s not something on behalf of our black players that I wanted to hear because it feels as though it is a criticism of them.
“I think we have got a situation where some people think it’s a political stand that they don’t agree with – that’s not the reason the players are doing it, we are supporting each other.
“I think the most important thing for our players to know is that all their team-mates and all the staff are fully supportive.
“I think the majority of people understand it. I think some people aren’t quite understanding the message and I suppose we are seeing that across a number of football grounds at the moment.”

    SCOT TO BE GOOD
Scotland were denied an impressive victory over the Netherlands last night by a last minute Memphis Depay free-kick.
Steve Clarke’s side delivered a confident display, with Jack Hendry sweeping them into the lead after brilliant pressing from Stuart Armstrong.
Depay produced a great finish to equalise before the break, but Kevin Nisbet bagged his second goal on 63 minutes to restore Scotland’s lead.
But Depay then spared Frank de Boer’s blushes late on.

    LEV IT OUT
Manchester United starlet Dylan Levitt featured alongside Dan James for Wales last night against Paul Pogba’s France.
The midfielder, 20, has made one senior appearance for United, and spent the second half of the season on loan at Istra 1961 in Croatia.
He replaced Joe Allen on the hour mark.
Levitt tries to get close to Kylian Mbappe
    FRENCH FANCY
Paul Pogba got the better of Daniel James last night, when the pair faced off on international duty.
Both are gearing up for Euro 2020, with France and Wales respectively.
But it was Pogba who got the win in last night’s friendly, as Les Bleus swept past Robert Page’s Wales 3-0 .
Pogba played 63 minutes of the dominant win, while James did manage to carve out a couple of openings during his 73 minutes on the field.

    TRIP UP
Manchester United are set to give up on the signing of right-back Kieran Trippier, with reports suggesting the defender has decided to stay at Atletico Madrid.
Trippier had been identified as a potential transfer target for United this summer.
In January, Trippier was identified as a potential target, with United eager to bring him back to the Premier League.
However, it’s now been reported in Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo that he’s decided to stay put.
United were said to be willing to pay £18million in order to sign the full-back.
And that fee would have been enough for Atletico to sell, considering the financial difficulties the club has been dealing with as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Speaking after Atletico won the La Liga title, Trippier spoke of how happy he was in Spain and appeared to close the door to any potential move away.
    ON RED ALERT
Rio Ferdinand has claimed that Manchester United have gone past Liverpool – despite the ‘excuses’ the Reds had last season.
The former Red Devils defender also believes that Old Gunnar Solskjaer will be pleased with the progress shown by the club’s second-placed finish.
United finished five points ahead of Liverpool – a vast improvement on the season before when they finished 33 points behind their rivals.
When asked for his assessment of United’s season, Ferdinand told Goal: “I think in the league we’ve got what we wanted, which was an improvement.
“I think Man United at the end of last season finished 30-odd points behind Liverpool.
“Liverpool are now behind us and they’ll have their excuses and reasons why but the cold facts are that we have gained that much ground on them that we’ve gone past them this season.
“That shows vast improvement and we’re second in the league.
“By no means are we the finished article but I think at the beginning of the season if you’d said you’d finish second in the league from where we were I think they’d have snapped your hand off.”

    GOING, GOING, RON
Paris Saint-Germain are in talks with Cristiano Ronaldo over a sensational summer transfer – with the Juventus star ‘welcoming’ the approach, according to reports.
The Portuguese forward’s time at Juventus appears to be up after a disappointing season for the Turin giants.
Ronaldo, 36, now looks destined to leave with Real Madrid and Manchester United both linked with the star forward.
The 173-cap Portugal legend’s club team-mates are believed to have ‘abandoned’ him after growing tired of the ‘perks’ his receives.
And Ronaldo is now claimed to have been approached by PSG in what could spark a summer transfer merry-go-round, according to AS.
The Spanish outlet have also revealed Ronaldo ‘welcomes’ the approach from the Ligue 1 giants.
    SERGI-GO
Manchester United transfer target Sergio Ramos is reportedly heading for move away from Real Madrid this summer after arguing with club officials over Kylian Mbappe, reports suggest.
Ramos remains one of United’s top targets ahead of the summer.
The Spanish centre-back is out of contract this summer, and it seems unlikely he’ll sign a new deal.
Spanish outlet AS suggest Ramos was among the group of Madrid players unhappy with plans for a 10% pay-cut.
The veteran star is said to have been unhappy with plans to cut salaries in order to fund a move for Mbappe.
He reportedly told his Madrid team-mates not to accept the proposals, because the money they saved would only be used to sign the Paris Saint-Germain star.
    MORE FROM BRUNO
Man United star Bruno Fernandes elaborated, after telling the club’s official website that he’d rather win team trophies than individual gongs.
He continued: “For me, the most important thing is to help my team-mates to also be Player of the Season.
“That’s the most important thing because, if someone from the club is Player of the Season, it means that we do very, very well this season.
“I think we will always be happy if someone else takes an individual award because it means the team is doing well.
“Nobody in football, a team sport, wins an individual trophy just doing well himself. You have to do well but you have to have the help of your team-mates to do well.
“When you have an individual trophy, of course, you are doing really well and deserve the credit but that credit goes to the team because they help you do better and better.”

    TROPHY HUNTER
Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes is flattered to be nominated for the PFA Player of the Year award.
But he’d rather win trophies as a team.
He told the club’s official website: “If we win trophies, it is the most important thing.
“Of course, it’s good for a player to win individual awards and I will never say I don’t want to be the best player in the league or I don’t want to be the PFA Player of the Season.

    LUC RUN OUT
Manchester United and Chelsea have missed out on the chance to sign Lucas Vazquez after he signed a new, three-year contract at Real Madrid.
The versatile Los Blancos ace, 29, had been a top target of both Premier League giants this summer.
But Real Madrid have confirmed the Spanish forward has put pen to paper on a new long-term contract at the Bernabeu.
A club statement read: “Real Madrid CF and Lucas Vázquez have agreed to extend the player’s contract.
“He will remain linked to the club for the next three seasons, until June 30, 2024.”

    VILLA RETREAT
Alexis Sanchez has emerged as a transfer target for Sevilla ahead of a busy summer sell-off for Inter Milan.
The Serie A champions are reportedly wanting to cash in on £85million worth of talent and cut their wage bill by as much as 20 per cent.
Antonio Conte quit the club over the decision, which was taken amid a financial crisis for Inter and Chinese owners Suning.
A number of players have already been identified for a move including Achraf Hakimi, with Paris Saint-Germain hoping to bag a £50m deal.
High-earner Christian Eriksen and Marcelo Brozovic, out of contract in 12 months’ time, could also be moved on.
Sanchez, 32, is an option given he was not a regular starter during the Scudetto triumph despite his hefty £117,000-a-week wages.
Spanish newspaper Sport quotes Italian media reports that suggest Sevilla are chasing the Chilean.
The deal would require Inter to accept a cut-price bid for Sanchez.

    GOOD MORNING RED DEVILS FANS
Rafael van der Vaart has told Donny van de Beek: You’ve bitten off more than you can chew in joining Man United.
The ex-Spurs ace told ESPN: “United could be a step too high for Van de Beek.
“If nobody leaves United during the summer, he is going to need to get lucky to break into their starting eleven.
“He is much too good to remain sat on the bench for two seasons. He needs to get regular playing time soon.
“He is still young, but the time is flying past. Joining a club like Borussia Dortmund would have been better for him.
“Donny was a perfect fit for Ajax’s system, but he does not fit in at United.”
Meanwhile, United will continue to keep tabs on all their transfer targets during Euro 2020.
According to Manchester Evening News, United will be following the progress of England’s Jadon Sancho and Declan Rice.

    GUNNERS GONERS
Arsenal have confirmed that NINE players will leave the club when their contracts expire later this month.
David Luiz and Martin Odegaard lead the names departing the Emirates as Mikel Arteta seeks an epic summer rebuild after missing out on European football.
Joining Luiz and Odegaard on the axed list are fellow senior squad members Dani Ceballos and Mat Ryan.
There are exits in the youth set-up too, with Levi Laing, Joseph Olowu, Luke Plange and Jason Sraha leaving.
Arsenal were reportedly keen on signing Odegaard permanently.
But he could now form part of Carlo Ancelotti’s plans after the Italian sealed a sensational return to Spain this week.

    KANE & STABLE
Antonio Conte will reportedly only join Tottenham if Harry Kane stays at the club, reports say.
The Italian boss, 51, is in talks to take over in North London after leaving Inter Milan.
And The Times report that retaining Kane’s services could be key to Spurs’ hopes of landing Conte.
Kane, 27, is wanted by both Manchester clubs and Chelsea after revealing he wants to leave Spurs to win trophies.
The Times report adds that Conte will want to be backed with funds in the transfer market if he’s to move to North London.
Meanwhile, respected Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano says Tottenham and Conte are around £2.6million apart in salary expectations.

    EMI NOD
Aston Villa are interested in signing playmakers Emile Smith Rowe and Emi Buendia, according to reports.
The Premier League side could face a busy summer in the transfer market as captain Jack Grealish has been linked with a number of clubs.
According to The Telegraph, Villa are keeping tabs on Arsenal youngster Smith Rowe.
The 20-year-old has made an impressive start to his professional career, making 20 Premier League appearances this term.
But he is yet to commit his future to the Gunners and has just two years left on his existing deal at the Emirates.
Reports also suggest Dean Smith’s side are keen on Norwich midfielder Emi Buendia.
Arsenal are targeting Emi x Emi this summer
    BEND OF THE ROAD
Nicklas Bendtner has opened the door to a potential Arsenal return – as a MANAGER.
The former forward , who retired earlier today, said: “I miss football every day, but I’m well aware there is a cut-off date in this job.
“I’m going to have to spend time understanding that it’s really over now.
“I have to find something else to care about, and find something to give me what football has given me all these years.
“I’ve been playing football all my life, and it just stops overnight. Suddenly I’m outside the game, and I want to do a lot of things.
“But this has not been possible because of the coronavirus pandemic.
“The rush you get from being inside a stadium is impossible to get anywhere else.
“Football is such a big part of my life that I can’t step away from it.
“That is why I am taking coaching courses. I hope this can give me as much, or maybe even more, than I got from being a player.
“In this way I still want to be part of football.”
Nicklas Bendtner could return to Arsenal one day… as boss
Son and Kane have a terrific partnership up top
    LUC RUN OUT
Manchester United and Chelsea have missed out on the chance to sign Lucas Vazquez after he signed a new, three-year contract at Real Madrid.

    RAF RACE
Chelsea have entered the race to sign £70million-rated Inter Milan star Achraf Hakimi, according to reports.
The Serie A champions are actively looking to sell one of their big-name stars this summer to raise some much-needed money.
The decision played a pivotal role in Antonio Conte quitting the San Siro – with the Italian now linked with the top job at Tottenham.
Hakimi, 22, appears to be the man on the way out, with Paris Saint-Germain having already launched a £52m bid.
The Ligue 1 giants’ first attempt was swiftly knocked back by Inter, with the Italian champions holding out for bids of around £70m.
Arsenal have already expressed an interest as they hunt for a new right-back, with Hector Bellerin – the club’s longest-serving player – expected to leave this summer.
And now Chelsea have joined the hunt for Hakimi, according to Sky Italia.

    GUNNER JOIN?
Arsenal are in talks to hire ex-Lille sporting director Luis Campos, according to reports.
The talent spotter, who is also believed to be wanted by Real Madrid, was director of football at Monaco when Kylian Mbappe was discovered.
According to journalist Loic Tanzi, Campos will not join Nice following weeks of speculation.
Both Arsenal and Real Madrid are now believed to be interested in acquiring the 56-year-old’s services, although it is unclear if he will be hired as a director of football or scout.

    ME AND ROUD FOREVER
AC Milan are on the verge of snapping up former Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud, according to reports in Italy.
The free agent was set to leave Chelsea last summer before hitting form and earning a new deal.
This season, he has largely been restricted to the bench aside from a seven-goal December and last started a game for Thomas Tuchel in March.
With his contract up at the end of the month, Giroud is free to negotiate a free transfer away from Chelsea with several clubs reportedly interested.
But Serie A side Milan have won the race, as reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport.
Negotiations with Rossoneri legend and technical director Paolo Maldini are described as going well and an agreement is within sight.
The opportunity to remain in the Champions League while experiencing Italian football is said to be high on Giroud’s wishlist.
Also useful is a significant tax cut which the Frenchman will receive on his rumoured two-year, £65,000-a-week contract.
Giroud is said to be excited by the prospect of playing alongside Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who enjoyed a stunning start to last season before encountering injury problems.

    BENTEK-STAY
    By SunSport’s Duncan Wright
Christian Benteke has signed a new two-year deal with Crystal Palace after finally establishing himself as first choice striker at the club.
Benteke, 30, has suffered a nightmare with injuries since Palace splashed out a club-record £27million to sign him from Liverpool five years ago and struggled to live up to his price tag.
But the Belgian international was at last able to stay fit for an extended run last season and responded by scoring ten goals in 30 appearances for the Eagles.
That has persuaded the managerless South London club to tie him down for two more years.
Benteke said: “I’m happy and proud to commit my future to Crystal Palace. Five years already and still a lot more to come.
“We have a great group of players and staff, and I’m looking forward to the season ahead and playing in front of our fans again.”
Palace chairman Steve Parish added: “Christian has been an integral part of consolidating our position as an established Premier League club over the last five years.
“He is an outstanding professional and has more than proven that he still has the quality and the hunger to perform for our club at the highest level, and I couldn’t be happier to see him in red and blue for another two seasons.”

Real Madrid will reportedly increase their efforts to sign Kylian Mbappe following Carlo Ancelotti’s appointment.
The ex-Everton boss could land the Paris Saint-Germain star this summer, leading to a potential exchange of Cristiano Ronaldo and Mauro Icardi.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Italian’s arrival in Madrid will lead to the club attempting to sign Mbappe as a ‘gift’ to the coach.
Real failed to win a trophy in 2020-21 and linking up the striker with France team-mate Karim Benzema is seen as a surefire route to success.
On Wednesday night, the pair combined in a 3-0 friendly win over Wales.
Mbappe, 22, is out of contract in 12 months’ time leading to lengthy talks with PSG over his future.
If a deal cannot be agreed, Madrid are said to be confident that they can swoop in and nab their number one target for a relatively cheap fee.

    HEADING SOUTH
England boss Gareth Southgate has offered an update on Trent Alexander-Arnold, after the full-back limped out of last night’s 1-0 friendly victory over Austria.
The Three Lions gaffer told BBC 5 Live: “It’s not a good situation that he’s had to walk off in some discomfort.
“We’ll know more details in the next 24 to 48 hours. It looks like a thigh injury – in terms of the full extent, we don’t know yet.
“It’s devastating, he’s worked hard to earn a spot here. I just hope it’s not too serious.”

    SEVENTH HEAVEN
There’ll be a lot for Aston Villa fans to enjoy this summer at Euro 2020… like watching stars Jack Grealish and John McGinn.
In fact, both men have been handed their respective nations’ No7 shirts, and are set to clash as England face Scotland at Wembley on June 18.

    UN-LISHED
Jack Grealish was England’s Cristiano Ronaldo in Wednesday’s win over Austria, according to Roy Keane.
The Irish pundit told ITV: “[Grealish] is the star man, he makes things happen.
“He has courage and always wants the ball in tight areas.
“Like Cristiano Ronaldo at Portugal, you need players like that in your team. It is brave.”
Roy Keane highlighted Jack Grealish for praise on Wednesday
    GOOD MORNING EUROS FANS
England got their Euro 2020 adventure off to a good start with a 1-0 friendly win over Austria.
Bukayo Saka scored the only goal of the game as the Three Lions saw off David Alaba and Co at the Riverside.
But the result came at a cost as Trent Alexander-Arnold hobbled off injured near the final whistle.
He pulled up hurt just minutes before full-time, appearing to injure his hamstring while clearing a ball with no opponents nearby.
Reflecting on the setback, Gareth Southgate said: “We’re going to have a little look. It’s hard to see him come off the way he did.
“We’ll look at it over the next 24 hours. I think it’s a thigh but the medical team will look.
“We just have to see, it’s not a good sign to see him go off as he did.
“We’ll know more in the next 24-48 hours and go from there. We don’t know the full extent.”
Meanwhile, Scotland conceded a last-gasp goal as they drew 2-2 with the Netherlands.
And ten-man Wales were beaten 3-0 by world champions France.
Finally, a number of Belgium players have reportedly rejected the chance to receive a Covid-19 vaccination before Euro 2020.
Belgian outlet HLN claim some of Roberto Martinez’s players turned down the chance to take the Pfizer jab over fears it will wreck their chances.
The country’s government had given the green light for the Red Devils – the number one international team in football – to receive their vaccination.
Yet some players are worried about the potential side effects – tiredness, headaches, muscle and joint pain, chills and fever – that affects more than one in ten people.
    HUG-S ALL AROUND
Hugo Lloris says France asked the referee not to send off Neco Williams in the 3-0 friendly win over Wales.
The Liverpool star was harshly shown a red card for a handball as the French were awarded a penalty, which Karim Benzema missed.
However, that didn’t stop Kylian Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann and Ousmane Dembele netting in a comfortable win for Les Bleus.
And Lloris said after the game: “We all asked the referee not to send the Welsh player off, we wanted the match to finish as 11 vs 11.”
    SOUTH OF HEAVEN
Gareth Southgate admits Trent Alexander-Arnold’s injury does not look good.
But he will not make a decision over the right-back’s Euro spot until England’s medical team discover the full extent of his setback.
Southgate said: “We’re going to have a little look.

    TRENT TROUBLE
Trent Alexander-Arnold limped off injured late on as England beat Austria 1-0.
The Liverpool star, 22, has given Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate a major headache 11 days from the start of Euro 2020.
The right-back – one of four included in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad – endured an efficient night as England won in Middlesbrough.
But there was drama late on as Alexander-Arnold pulled up hurt just minutes before full-time.
No opponent was near Alexander-Arnold, with the defender appearing to hurt a hamstring as he cleared the ball with his left foot.

England 1-0 Austria LIVE RESULT: Alexander-Arnold off INJURED as Saka gives Three Lions lead in Euro 2020 warm-up

ENGLAND have beaten a stubborn Austria side in a match overshadowed by a potential injury to Trent Alexander-Arnold.The Liverpool right-back limped off in the closing stages, leaving England to see out the game with ten men.
But Jesse Lingard took his opportunity to give Gareth Southgate food for thought after the Three Lions boss refused to call him up to his squad.
The West Ham loanee threaded a brilliant ball through for Jack Grealish and in the resulting scramble, Bukayo Saka tapped into an empty net.
    THAT’S ALL FOR TONIGHT
England cruise to victory in their first warm-up game ahead of Euro 2020.
Romania are up next on Sunday and the Riverside Stadium will host the game again.
It looked like Southgate’s men were going to get through tonight’s game unscathed.
But Alexander-Arnold picked up an injury clearing the ball and he needed assistance as he walked down the touchline. Not looking good!
    Goodnight.

    BUK OF THE NET
GARETH SOUTHGATE spent plenty of time praising Bukayo Saka’s ability to lift a struggling team when he named the Arsenal teenager in his Euros squad.
And the 19-year-old certainly rescued a shoddy England side in Middlesbrough on Wednesday night as he justified his selection for the tournament with his first international goal.
Saka has carried the poorest Gunners side in living memory throughout much of their miserable campaign – his maturity as well as his versatility earning him Southgate’s trust.
And the England boss needed Saka to save him for a morale-sapping result as a makeshift Three Lions side produced an error-strewn performance which saw Trent Alexander-Arnold hobble off through injury late on and could easily have ended in defeat.

    SOUTHGATE SPEAKS
Southgate spoke to ITV after the game and gave his thoughts on Alexander-Arnold’s injury: “We’re going to have a little look. It’s obviously not good to see him come off in the way he did.
“We’re just going to have to assess him in the next 24 hours. I think it’s a thigh injury, but the medical team are assessing him.
“We just have to see. It’s not a good sign to see him walk off as he did, but will know more in the next 24 or 48 hours.
“Let’s see how Trent is, and we’ll go from there. We don’t know the full extent.”
    GREALISH ON ALEXANDER-ARNOLD
Grealish spoke to ITV after the game and he is hoping Alexander-Arnold is ok.
But admitted that it doesn’t look great.

    FT: ENGLAND 1-0 AUSTRIA
England upped the tempo at the start of the second half and they got their reward in the 56th minute.
Kane found Lingard on the edge of Austria’s penalty area, and the Man Utd midfielder played a good first-time pass into Grealish.
Sabitzer managed to poke the ball away from England’s No10, but consequently into the path of Saka at the back post.
And the Arsenal youngster tapped home into an empty net.
Bad news for Southgate as Alexander-Arnold appears to have picked up an injury off the ball.
The Liverpool right-back cleared the ball up the pitch and he felt something go.
He needed help walking down the touchline and down the tunnel.
Injuries is something Southgate would have wanted to avoid heading into this summer’s tournament, but it’s struck at the wrong time.
    PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!
THE FULL-TIME WHISTLE GOES AT THE RIVERSIDE STADIUM!
    ENGLAND WIN!
    ENGLAND 1-0 AUSTRIA
    90+1. OFF THE LINE!
Friedl delivers a wonderful ball into England’s penalty area from the right-hand side.
Pickford comes out to punch the ball clear, but the England keeper collides with Godfrey and the ball falls to Schaub.
The Austrian sends a shot on goal but White clears off the line!
    ENGLAND 1-0 AUSTRIA
    90. The fourth official holds his board up and there will be three additional minutes played at the end of the second half.
    ENGLAND 1-0 AUSTRIA
    89. Alexander-Arnold cannot continue and he’s been taking off – it doesn’t look good. Injuries are what Southgate wants to avoid.
And it’s back luck considering all the rumours that have been circling this week about him potentially being left out of the squad.
He’s being assisted down the touchline, it really doesn’t look great for Alexander-Arnold.
    England down to ten men.
    ENGLAND 1-0 AUSTRIA
    88. CLOSE!
A wonderful cross is whipped into the penalty area from out wide on the right-hand side.
Gregoritsch gets up well to meet the cross, but he heads the ball agonisingly wide of the far post! Has to do better there.
    He was completely unmarked.
    ENGLAND 1-0 AUSTRIA
    87. YELLOW CARD!
Alexander-Arnold has been booked for not getting off the pitch, even though he hasn’t exactly done anything wrong.
A substitution hasn’t been made yet.
    ENGLAND 1-0 AUSTRIA
    85. YELLOW CARD!
Hinteregger is booked for his reaction towards the referee after a foul went against him.
Alexander-Arnold is also moving rather gingerly close to the touchline, it looks like he has picked up a knock of some kind.
Hopefully it’s just a knock, but he’s holding his left leg and he has asked not to continue.
    ENGLAND 1-0 AUSTRIA
    83. Austria will fancy their chances in the final few minutes of the game.
England has a couple of debutants on the pitch, and Austria have the chance to apply some pressure.
    ENGLAND 1-0 AUSTRIA
    81. We’re eating into the final ten minutes of the game, and England are comfortably in control of the game.
But all it takes is one chance and Austria could find themselves back on level terms.
    ENGLAND 1-0 AUSTRIA
    80. SAVE!
The ball breaks to Sabitzer 35 yards from goal, and the No9 gets a venomous strike off.
The ball swerves in the air almost wrong-footing Pickford, but the keeper manages to save!
    ENGLAND 1-0 AUSTRIA
    78. England are just edging the game in the possession department, 52 per cent to Austria’s 48.
And the Three Lions have the all-important goal.
    ENGLAND 1-0 AUSTRIA
    76. CHANCE!
Saka plays a beautiful ball in behind Austria’s backline for Calvert-Lewin to run onto.
The forward gets to the byline and drills the ball across the face of goal hoping to find Watkins.
But the Villa striker wasn’t on the same page.
Watkins recovers the ball and plays the ball into the path of Ward-Prowse, who tees up White.
The debutant connects well with the ball but his effort goes just wide of the far post!

    ENGLAND 1-0 AUSTRIA
    74. CLOSE!
The corner whizzes across the face of the goal and lucky avoided Friedl at the back post!
    ENGLAND 1-0 AUSTRIA
    74. Friedl receives the ball off RB Leipzig’s Sabitzer.
And the No26 shifts the ball onto his right foot and gets a shot off, but his effort deflects behind for a corner.
Good chance for Austria to fashion a chance.
    ENGLAND 1-0 AUSTRIA
    72. Grealish is getting some treatment whilst he’s sat on the bench – it looks like he’s getting an icepack for his shin.
Hopefully it’s nothing too serious. Well, it can’t be considering he’s juts completed 70 minutes.
    ENGLAND 1-0 AUSTRIA
    70. SUBSTITUTION!
Another England debut, Ben White of Brighton comes on for Grealish and it looks like England are changing shape.
Southgate is changing to a back three, testing it out before Euro 2020. It’s good to be able to change your approach mid-game.
    ENGLAND 1-0 AUSTRIA
    69. Jack Grealish finds himself in some room down the left-hand side.
And the attacking midfielder sends a driven cross across the face of goal towards the back post.
But no-one was there to tap home.

Jack Hendry fired the Scots ahead with just 11 minutes on the clock.
But Memphis Depay levelled for the Dutch just moments later.

    TEAM NEWS
Jesse Lingard has been named in England’s team to face Austria despite not being picked for the Euros.
Gareth Southgate has also gone for Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham and Jack Grealish in an attacking line-up.
The likes of Conor Coady, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kieran Trippier are involved too.
But it is unclear whether the Three Lions boss has plumped for a four or a five-man defence.

    EURO STARS
Here’s a look at those key England Euro dates for the diary.
Can Gareth Southgate’s men make it to the Wembley final on July 11?
The road to Euro 2020 glory starts tonight with the Three Lions’ friendly against Austria!
How England’s path to Euros glory could look
    LUKE AWAY
England boss Gareth Southgate will be sweating over Luke Shaw’s fitness ahead of Euro 2020 after the defender was spotted with a cast around his left wrist.
The 25-year-old looks to be a serious doubt to feature in tonight’s friendly against Austria after being snapped sporting a slight injury.
Shaw was caught by cameras with a cast on his left wrist while out with his girlfriend Anouska Santos in Altrincham town centre on Tuesday afternoon.
And to add insult to injury, the former Southampton ace was greeted to a parking ticket when he returned to his Rolls-Royce Cullinan.

    EXCLUSIVE BY CHARLIE WYETT
Harry Maguire revealed he has only just started light training in his race to be fit for the Euros.
And the Man United captain is set to miss England’s opening game against Croatia on June 13.
Maguire said: “I have done little bits of running.
“I don’t want to aggravate it too early as we still have nearly two weeks until the first game and it is a long tournament.
“I am taking it day by day. I have not asked for a time-frame but I am looking forward to being involved.
“It can improve dramatically in a few days and you can have little setbacks.”

    ALARM BELS
A number of Belgium players have reportedly rejected the chance to receive a Covid-19 vaccination before Euro 2020.

    COVID SHOCK
Scotland’s plans for tonight’s friendly with Holland are in chaos after SIX players were ruled out over Covid-19 fears.
Midfielder John Fleck was KO’d yesterday after testing positive for Coronavirus.
Now another half-dozen players have been taken out of the squad as a precaution.
Stars David Marshall, John McGinn, Che Adams, Stephen O’Donnell, Grant Hanley and Nathan Patterson will miss the clash.
They have stayed at the Scotland camp in Spain while the rest of the group flew to Portugal for tonight’s bounce game with the Dutch.

    LION HEARTS
Gareth Southgate will have a limited squad to choose from when England face Austria tonight.
Stars from Chelsea, Man United and Man City are set to be given the evening off after their European exploits.
And that could see West Ham loanee Jesse Lingard start – despite missing out on Southgate’s Euros squad.
Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka is also in line to feature tonight.

    RIO CRITICISM
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes England boss Gareth Southgate made a mistake when he called up the injured Harry Maguire.
Ferdinand said in his FIVE YouTube channel: “England needed another centre-back. This tells me he [Southgate] is definitely playing three at the back.
“Harry Maguire’s not even fit, I wouldn’t even take Maguire. You’re not fit, you’re not going to be fit for ages, it doesn’t make sense. I’ve been in squads with players who haven’t been fit and they don’t perform when they’re not themselves.
“It happened with Becks [David Beckham] and Wazza [Wayne Rooney]. As good as Maguire is, he’s not a Becks or a Wazza. I don’t think you should take someone who’s not 100 per cent fit. It’s hard to come back and get into a rhythm.
“That narrative ends up taking over the squad and it becomes the conversation and a distraction. Do we really need that? It’s pointless I think. Hopefully he proves me wrong, I would love it if he did”
    MAGUIRE UPDATE
Manchester United and England ace Harry Maguire has issued a promising injury update ahead of Euro 2020.
Maguire told SunSport: “The fear that I had was missing everything.
“I knew it was quite a bad injury. When I got the results of the scan, I knew it would be unlikely I would made the Europa League final — but we also never ruled it out.
“I would jump out of bed and put weight on my ankle, which I probably should not have done, and test it to see if the pain was still there. Every morning, I woke up wishing the pain would be gone.
“Unfortunately, it was not to be. I knew for me to start the Europa League final was very unlikely but I hoped to play some part. However it was out of reach and just not possible. Ahead of the final, I could still not run on the ankle.
“But it is now improving and getting better, so I am just looking forward to the Euros”
    SANCHO REPLACEMENT
Borussia Dortmund are preparing for life after Jadon Sancho, according to reports in Germany.
According to SportBild, Dortmund consider PSV Eindhoven ace Donyell Malen as Sancho’s replacement.
The England international is likely to join Manchester United, who have been keeping tabs on the star forward ever since last year.
However, the 21-year-old is currently focused on this summer’s Euro 2020 with the Three Lions

    BACK IN THE RAN
Manchester United have revived their interest in Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier.
According to Manchester Evening News, United are keeping tabs on Trippier ahead of this summer’s Euro 2020 finals.
The Red Devils were set to make a move in January but the full-back’s betting suspension ended their plans.
The former Tottenham player is out of contract with Atletico next summer and has reportedly made arrangements to return to England
    BACK IN THE RAN
Manchester United have revived their interest in Atletico Madrid full-back Kieran Trippier.
According to Manchester Evening News, United are keeping tabs on Trippier ahead of Euro 2020 this summer.
The Red Devils planned to make a move in the January transfer window but the full-back’s betting suspension halted their plans.
The former Tottenham ace is out of contract with Atleti next summer and has reportedly made arrangements to return to England
    RASH DECISION
Darren Anderton has advised England manager Gareth Southgate to start the following players in Euro 2020.
Anderton told BritishGambler.co.uk: “Rashford has that pace, Sterling has that pace, Foden for me is the player that we just have to get the best out of.
“Play him wherever you think you’ll get the best out of him whether that’s playing him deeper or starting him a little bit further up the pitch.
“For me I’d probably play him a little bit deeper and play Rashford and Sterling up top. If not one of those two then maybe Sancho”
    PFA AWARDS
Some of England’s most talented youngsters have been nominated for the Men’s PFA Young Player of the Year award.
Liverpool ace Trent Alexander-Arnold, West Ham star Declan Rice, Chelsea player Mason Mount, Manchester City wonderkid Phil Foden, Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka and Manchester United player Mason Greenwood made the shortlist.
All of them will be playing in Euro 2020 except for Greenwood, who has been sidelined due to an underlying injury problem.
    WALK THE LINE
Gary Lineker believes Tottenham star striker Harry Kane could join Manchester United after Euro 2020, where he will captain England.
Lineker told Goal: “I would love to see him at Barcelona but they are going for [Sergio] Aguero and are short on cash at the moment.
“I think it is between Manchester City, Manchester United and maybe PSG.
“They have [Mauricio] Pochettino and he would win things, guaranteed. I think it is more likely that one of the Manchester clubs can afford him outside of Chelsea.
“I don’t think he would go to Chelsea and do that to the Tottenham fans but who knows
    SOUTHGATE ON TRENT
England boss Gareth Southgate blasted recent reports suggesting Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold would be axed from his Euro 2020 squad after including the talented right-back to his final group.
Southgate said: “I spoke to Trent three weeks ago. There were stories over the last couple of weeks with lots of strange headlines, I have no idea where they have come from.
“I felt that there were stories that ran that were so far off the truth. I read stories about me that aren’t true but when it’s a player they may feel like they’re reading it so it may be true.
“Last night we were dealing with that, in the morning he’s taking set pieces preparing for tomorrow and then he’s reading that he is not going to the Euros.
“That’s the world I live in but I want to protect my players. I spoke to Trent last night to say ‘don’t know where this is coming from, it’s nonsense’. People jump on it and say I have an agenda or don’t like the kid. It is an incredible situation”

    SOUTHGATE IMPROVING
England boss Gareth Southgate insists he is still improving at the national team’s helm.
Southgate said: “Then I was a 17-year-old apprentice like I was at Crystal Palace and now I’m probably a 23-year-old player.
“I’ve only managed 200 games so in terms of experience, I’ve got a lot of experience now of as higher-pressured job as you can have experience of big matches with the national team.
“I still know that I’ll be better again in two years’ time and I’ll be better again in four years’ time because I’ve got the desire to improve, learn, reflect, get better and I want to be the best possible coach and manager that I can be.”
    DE-FFICULT COMPETITION
Barcelona are also interested in signing Sevilla star defender Jules Kounde in this summer transfer window.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Barca are looking to compete against Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal over Kounde in the coming months.
The centre-back stood out this season in LaLiga with some stunning performances in defence.
The France international is now set to compete in Euro 2020 for his nation
