    TRIPPER SELECTION JUSTIFIED
Many thought Southgate had got it wrong by selecting Tripper at left-back ahead of the actual left-backs Ben Chilwell and Luke Shaw.
But the Atletico Madrid man had a decent game.
Speaking about Tripper, Southgate said: “We felt that his talking across the backline and his ability to get out and stop crosses quickly and his experience on a day like today – alongside Tyrone Mings, who is relatively early in his international career – would be a good stabilising element.
“He is a very underrated player. People are still looking at the player from a few years ago and not at the one who is at Atletico Madrid and playing like a warrior in the last few seasons.
“He is a big part of what we’ve done over the last few years and he gave a really good performance.”
    MORE FROM MATCHWINNER STERLING
“It’s a great feeling for me playing at Wembley, not far from where I grew up as a young boy and seeing the stadium being built.
“I thought the team played brilliantly at times. We dug in.”
    ENGLAND CAPTAIN HARRY KANE

England boss Gareth Southgate speaks!”It’s lovely to have given our fans and our country a really enjoyable afternoon. The players dealt with the big occasion really well. Right from the start, incredible heat, they played well and settled early in the game.
“There were moments where the tempo dropped because of the heat but the majority of the game we were in control and didn’t give Croatia many opportunities and we looked dangerous.
“Kalvin Phillips is a player who is so understated. He has had a fantastic start to his international career. I thought he was immense throughout the game – as they all were – and I’m so pleased for Raheem.
“He was dangerous all game His goalscoring record suggests we should have faith in him and I think he was motivated t show that.
“We are going to need all those attacking players through the tournament. We can make changes and we will need to.
“The key was to get pressure on Croatia’s midfield players and we managed to do that. That limited some of the supply and the defenders dealt with the longer balls well and read the game well.
“It was a day when everybody who got onto the pitch performed well and that was set up by the whole group.”
    RAZ THAT
Sterling scored the only goal of the game and depend his Euros account!

    PHILLIPS HIGHLIGHTS STRONG MIDFIELD
Man of the match Phillips highlighted England’s midfield in his post-match press conference.
He said: “I love playing with Declan [Rice] and having a bit of licence to get forward.
“I know that he’s behind me, backing me up if I lose the ball.
“There was a lot of talk about us fighting for one position but I think we play really well together.”
Rice sitting in front of the back four gave Phillips and Mount the license to roam.
And it worked a treat; Modric didn’t have an impact!
    MOUNT MAP
Mount played on the left side of the midfield and he was class. Alongside Phillips, his relentless pressing was key.

    MINGS SPEAKS
Mings was called in to replace Maguire who isn’t fully fit and he played an absolute blinder.
Speaking to the BBC, he said: “It’s a dream come true to play in a major tournament for England, and I loved every second of it.
“It’s probably the hottest game I’ve played in, but the team showed a lot of grit, determination and quality, and we’re over the moon with the start.
“They’re a top team and it was good for us to repel their threat. Equally we always have the quality to trouble teams.
“I can’t even remember the goal if I’m honest!
“I know Kalvin [Phillips] put in a lot of good work and Raz [Raheem Sterling] has got the quality and composure in front of goal, as he’s showed many times.”

    MAN OF THE MATCH
Man of the match goes to Kalvin Phillips hands down! He was absolutely phenomenal in a slightly advanced role.
Keep the midfield the same for Scotland, Southgate!

    STERLING SPEAKS
Goal-scorer Sterling spoke to the BBC after his goal won England the game.
He said: “I always said that if I ever play at Wembley in a major tournament, I’m going to score.
“It’s my back garden, I had to score.
“There’s a lot of different reasons why I haven’t scored for my club, and that’s totally irrelevant now.
“I’m here with England, I’m enjoying my football and I’m just delighted to score. It was a lovely weighted pass from Kalvin [Phillips].
    SCENES
    England fans enjoyed Sterling’s goal!

Here it is: Pickford; Walker, Stones, Mings, Trippier; Rice, Phillips, Mount; Foden, Sterling, Kane
    CANCEL TRIP
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone doesn’t want to sell Kieran Trippier to Manchester United.
That is according to the Daily Mirror, who claim Simeone is in no mood to do business with United over Trippier.
Thus, Atleti have slapped a £30million price tag on the right back in order to put the Red Devils off.
United have been hoping that the England international is available for a fee between £15-£20m
    MAGUIRE LATEST

Maguire trained with the rest of the Three Lions squad but doesn’t seem set to make a return from an ankle injury just yet.

    CANCELO OUT
Manchester City star Joao Cancelo has been ruled out of Euro 2020 after testing positive for coronavirus and has started to quarantine.
Cancelo has been replaced by Manchester United loanee Diogo Dalot ahead of Tuesday’s opener with Hungary.
The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) said: “Under-21 international Diogo Dalot will join the National Team’s delegation in Budapest to prepare for his debut at Euro 2020.
“The AC Milan player will replace Joao Cancelo, who tested positive for Covid-19 following a rapid antigen test carried out this Saturday by the FPF Health and Performance Unit”
    MAN UTD ON ERIKSEN
Manchester United reached out to Inter Milan star Christian Eriksen and his loved ones.
Eriksen collapsed during Denmark’s Euro 2020 opener against Finland after 41 minutes and medics rushed to the scene to treat the Inter Milan star.
The former Tottenham ace’s condition is now stable and continues to be hospitalised ahead of some further examinations.
    Here’s what United tweeted:
We are encouraged by the latest updates regarding Christian Eriksen and will continue to keep him & his loved ones in our thoughts. We would also like to express our profound admiration for the swift response of those in Copenhagen, who worked in such desperate circumstances ❤️ https://t.co/UjQr5Lq09s pic.twitter.com/L30SVloavv— Manchester United (@ManUtd) June 12, 2021

    JESS DO IT
Jesse Lingard has held a candid meeting with Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and told him he wishes to stay at Old Trafford.
Lingard spent the second half of the season on loan at West Ham, where he was such a hit that he went from Red Devils outcast to an England return.
The Hammers want to land the forward on a permanent deal and the 28-year-old hasn’t completely ruled that out.
However, SunSport understand that Lingard prefers to stay at United and fight for his place

    BAD TRIP
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has advised his former club against signing Atletico Madrid star Kieran Trippier.
Ferdinand told Metro: “I don’t think they’d buy someone to come in and play [every week], I think whoever’s coming in there is going to be playing backup.
“They spent £50million on [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka, not to be a backup or No2. He [Trippier] wouldn’t be my choice if I’m honest, but I see the qualities he has.
“But Trippier definitely wouldn’t be my choice in terms of the profile of player that I’d be bringing in to play as a No2 right-back”
    CLOSING D’ORS
Borussia Dortmund have rejected Manchester United’s proposed Ballon d’Or clause in any deal for Jadon Sancho.
According to the Athletic, United and Dortmund are close to sealing a dealing for Sancho.
The last part of the transfer is largely down to bonuses with the Bundesliga giants keen on realistically achievable add-ons.
Dortmund are said to be seeking instalments that are based on club income via team success rather than individual awards.
That has caused them to reject United’s Ballon d’Or clause that would have been triggered if Sancho finished in the top three in the annual gong
    SAUL SEARCHING
Chelsea are reportedly set to rival Manchester United in the race for Saul Niguez as Atletico Madrid lower their asking price to £68million.
The Premier League pair are joined by Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Bayern Munich in tracking Saul.
The star midfielder is highly rated at Atletico, but due to financial strains amid the coronavirus pandemic, they are open to selling him.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the Spain international has a release clause of £130m with his contract expiring in 2016.
But Atleti will listen to offers of around £68m and Juventus are said to be the most interested.
    RON THE PAUL
Manchester United may swap star midfielder Paul Pogba for Juventus stars Cristiano Ronaldo or Paulo Dybala this summer.
That is according to Tuttosport, who report Juve would be willing to part with Ronaldo or Dybala in exchange for Pogba.
That is because the Bianconeri cannot afford the sort of transfer fee that the Red Devils would demand for the France international.
Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes has been in Italy for meetings this week, with the 36-year-old talisman’s future on the agenda
    GOOD MORNING RED DEVILS FANS
Manchester United’s alleged bid to sign Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho continues to gather pace, with the German giants reportedly rejecting a proposed Ballon d’Or clause.
The two clubs are expected to agree a fee in due course – and that will be good news for Manchester City’s bank balance as they are believed to receive a 15 per cent sell-on fee.
United’s alleged pursuit of Kieran Trippier also remains in the news, although club legend Rio Ferdinand has told them NOT to sign the England star.
Ferdinand told the Metro: “He wouldn’t be my choice, if I’m honest, but I see the qualities he has.”
And the Red Devils are believed to be interested in signing £68m-rated Saul Niquez from Atletico Madrid but face competition from Chelsea, Juventus and Bayern Munich.
Donny van de Beek, meanwhile, could be on his way out of Old Trafford as Arsenal have reportedly enquired about the midfielder.
And Paul Pogba has refused to rule out a move, telling the press: “I have one year left on my contract, everyone knows that.”
But one player that seems likely to stay is Jesse Lingard as SunSport understands he wants to fight for his place in the team next term.
EXCLUSIVE – LING LONGS TO RETURN
Jesse Lingard has held a candid meeting with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and told him: My heart still belongs to Manchester.
The 28-year-old spent the second half of the season on loan at West Ham, where he was such a hit that he went from Old Trafford outcast to an England return.
Although the Hammers would love to make the move permanent – and the player himself still hasn’t totally ruled it out – he would far prefer to stay in the north west.
And he told United manager Solskjaer exactly that when they had a frank meeting recently to discuss the striker’s future.
Lingard accepted he had to leave Old Trafford in the short-term if he wanted first team football and was an instant success at West Ham.
He hit nine goals in 16 games, won an England recall after two years and only narrowly missed out on a place in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the Euros.
But despite also having an excellent relationship with Hammers boss David Moyes, he has admitted to friends his big hope is to rebuild his United career.
    JOSE MOURINHO COLUMN
Jude Bellingham is going to have a major role to play for England in this tournament, I am convinced of it.
And while it’s very dangerous to compare players – especially when you compare them with top, top performers – I do think Bellingham has something of Frank Lampard about him.

    RAPHAEL VARANE LATEST
Real Madrid are ‘willing to sell Raphael Varane for around £52million’ to Manchester United this summer.
The defender, who is currently with the French squad preparing for Euro 2020, is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract.
Varane, 28, has enjoyed a glittering decade at the Bernabeu but he has so far failed to show a strong desire to sign an extension.
A host of clubs have been linked with the ace, including the Red Devils and Premier League rivals Chelsea.
And Spanish show El Partidazo de COPE report that Real would be willing to listen to offers for Varane now and have set their asking price rather than risk losing him for nothing in 2022.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who is closing in on the signing of England winger Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund, is also determined to land a centre-half over the close-season.
And Varane is believed to be his No1 target to partner captain Harry Maguire at the back next term.

That is according To The Athletic, who suggest there will be no Manchester United or Arsenal players in Gareth Southgate’s starting line-up.
More specifically, Southgate seems to have opted for a 4-3-3 formation in what is most certainly NOT the Three Lions’ official team to play against the 2018 World Cup finalists.
Here it is: Pickford; Walker, Stones, Mings, Trippier; Rice, Phillips, Mount; Foden, Sterling, Kane
    FULL CANCELO STATEMENT
Here’s the full statement from FPF after Manchester City star Joao Cancelo tested positive for COVID-19 and was ruled out of Euro 2020
The announcement read: “Under-21 international Diogo Dalot will join the National Team’s delegation in Budapest to prepare for his debut at Euro 2020. The AC Milan player will replace Joao Cancelo, who tested positive for Covid-19 following a rapid antigen test carried out this Saturday by the FPF Health and Performance Unit.
“The Hungarian health authorities were immediately informed and the player – who is doing well – was placed in isolation. The result of the test carried out by USP was confirmed by an RT-PCR test carried out on Joao Cancelo also on Saturday and whose result was known on Sunday morning.
“In accordance with the Covid-19 protocol defined by UEFA before the Euro 2020 matches, all players and members of the entourage underwent RT-PCR tests on Saturday. The results, with the exception of Joao Cancelo, were negative.
“The Hungarian health authorities became aware of compliance with the protection procedures, fully respected according to the UEFA protocol, in a group that also has a high rate of vaccine coverage and authorised the National Team to comply with the stipulated plan for the European Championship without any changes”
    MAGUIRE LATEST
It looks like Manchester United star Harry Maguire won’t be starting for England against Croatia today.
Maguire trained with the rest of the Three Lions group but doesn’t seem set to make a return from an ankle injury just yet.
Manager Gareth Southgate even claimed that the possibility of the defender getting involved would be a “long shot”.
England take on Croatia at Wembley Stadium at 2pm today
    CANCELO OUT
Manchester City ace Joao Cancelo has been ruled out of Euro 2020 after testing positive for coronavirus and has started to quarantine.
Cancelo has been replaced by Manchester United loanee Diogo Dalot ahead of Tuesday’s opener against Hungary.
    TAYLOR PRAISE
Referee Anthony Taylor has also received a raft of praise for his quick reaction after Christian Eriksen’s collapse.
It took Taylor just a few seconds until he stopped the game and called the medics in.
And of course the medical team did a great job treating and resuscitating Eriksen.
The Inter Milan star’s condition continues to be stable
Of all the split-second decisions Anthony Taylor has made in his life as a referee, tonight’s reaction was the most vital. Respect to Taylor for quickly realising the enormity of the situation in Copenhagen and getting medics on to assist Christian Eriksen. Medics also superb 🙌— Henry Winter (@henrywinter) June 12, 2021

    SIMON SAYS
Denmark captain Simon Kjaer has received a lot of praise for his reaction after his team-mate Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch.
Kjaer showed immense leadership and composure as he secured Eriksen’s neck, cleared his airwaves and administered CPR before medics arrived on the scene.
The AC Milan defender was then seen consoling the former Tottenham star’s wife Sabrina along with Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
But of course, no one can count out the incredible work the medical team put together which saved the Inter Milan star’s life
    ERIKSEN LATEST
The Danish Football Association have released a statement with all the latest news regarding Christian Eriksen’s health.
The DBU have confirmed that Eriksen’s condition remains “stable” and will continue to be hospitalised for further examination.
Meanwhile, the Denmark national team and staff will continue to receive “crisis assistance” after yesterday’s scenes.
    Here’s their statement in full:

    ERIKSEN POTENTIAL FUTURE
Sanjay Sharma, a professor of sports cardiology at St George’s University in London who worked with Christian Eriksen at Tottenham, has suggested the Denmark international may never play professionally again after his collapse.
Sharma also claimed that Eriksen suffered “cardiac arrest” in the Euro 2020 opener against Finland.
He said: “His cardiac arrest has rocked the entire nation today and that’s what happens. It’s not just them that it affects, it’s the psyche of so many people.
“The good news is he will live, the bad news is he was coming to the end of his career, so would he play another professional football game? That I can’t say.
“In the UK he wouldn’t play. We’d be very strict about it”
    SAUL SEARCHING
Chelsea look set to rival Manchester United in the race for Saul Niguez as Atletico Madrid lower their asking price to £68million.
The Blues and the Red Devils are joined by Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Bayern Munich in tracking Saul.
The midfielder is highly rated at Atletico, but due to financial strains amid the coronavirus pandemic, they are open to selling him.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the Spain international has a release clause of £130m with his current deal expiring in 2016.
But Atleti will listen to offers of around £68m and Juve are said to be the most interested.
    WHITE LATEST
Arsenal are keen on signing Brighton star Ben White in the summer transfer window.
That is according to The Athletic, who claim the Gunners may splash up to £40-50million for White after Euro 2020, where he is in action with England.
The centre-back impressed with the Seagulls this past season with 39 appearances across all competitions under his name.
The England international has also been strongly linked with a move to the top-four clubs, including Chelsea, in the summer
    GOOD MORNING FOOTBALL FANS
Chelsea are likely to be priced out of a move for Borussia Dortmund striker Erling Haaland, according to reports.
Hakim Ziyech may also not be playing at Stamford Bridge next term as AC Milan are believed to be interested in bringing him to the San Siro.
And there’s a chance Timo Werner won’t be either, with Real Madrid reportedly eyeing up a shock move for the German forward.
Elsewhere in the Premier League, Manchester United’s alleged bid to sign Jadon Sancho continues to gather pace, with Dortmund reportedly rejecting a proposed Ballon d’Or clause.
The Red Devils are also believed to be interested in signing £68m-rated Saul Niquez from Atletico Madrid but face competition from Chelsea, Juventus and Bayern Munich.
Donny van de Beek, meanwhile, could be on his way out of Old Trafford as Arsenal have reportedly enquired about the player.
The Gunners have been linked with a lot of midfielders recently, with Granit Xhaka believed to be on the verge of joining Jose Mourinho’s Roma.
Mikel Arteta’s shortlist is said to include Brighton star Yves Bissouma, Wolves hero Ruben Neves, Sassuolo star Manuel Locatelli and Argentina international Rodrgio De Paul.
EXCLUSIVE – CON AND GET IT
Crystal Palace will make a £15million bid for Chelsea midfield starlet Conor Gallagher as they close in on a new boss.
The Eagles are keen on Gallagher, 21, for the second summer running and hope to put in an offer that would tempt Stamford Bridge chiefs.
And that would then put Gallagher on the spot as he wants to stay at Chelsea and try to impress boss Thomas Tuchel so he can be part of his long-term plans.
If Blues’ money men are willing to sell Gallagher that will mark his card and could push him towards his fan club at Palace.
Gallagher showed he could handle the Prem in a loan season at West Brom.
They won the chase for him when Palace took Chelsea’s Michy Batshuayi instead and were unable to buy or loan him at the time.

Christian Eriksen ‘asked Denmark players to play on’ in shock Finland loss as Lukaku dedicates Euro 2020 goal to Dane

DENMARK have been beaten by Finland in a match where football was of secondary importance. The match had been stopped after Christian Eriksen collapsed on the field just before half time, receiving CPR shortly afterwards.
To the relief of the crowd, Eriksen woke up in hospital and is in stable condition.
And a number of reports suggested Eriksen himself had requested the players continue rather than carrying on on Sunday at 12pm.
Once the game got back underway, Finland came away with the points with a header from Joel Pohjanpalo.
The Danes had the chance to rescue the match but Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg rolled the penalty to the Finland goalkeeper as they were beaten on an emotional evening.
Meanwhile in the other Euro 2020 Group B game, Inter team-mate Romelu Lukaku dedicated his opening goal to Eriksen as Belgium beat Russia 3-0.
He leaned over to the TV camera and said “Chris, I love you”.
Follow all the latest with our live blog below…
    ERIKSEN UPDATE
Inter Milan have claimed that they are optimistic about Christian Eriksen’s condition.
Inter CEO Marotta: “Christian Eriksen just sent a message on Inter whatsapp chat, it was few minutes ago. We’re optimistic about Christian conditions, Denmark staff told us that the situation is under control”, he told Rai Sport. 🇩🇰 #Eriksen— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) June 12, 2021

    GAME ON
England’s match with Croatia is set to go ahead tomorrow as Gareth Southgate’s players sent their “best wishes” to Christian Eriksen.
Three Lions captain Harry Kane, who is close friends with former Spurs team-mate Eriksen, tonight tweeted: “Chris. I’m sending all my love to you and your family. Stay strong mate.”
An FA spokesman said there was “no suggestion” England’s opening Group D clash tomorrow at Wembley would be postponed.
Eriksen is now “awake” and “stable” after being rushed to hospital from the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen, Danish football association the DBU said.
The Inter Milan ace is awaiting more medical tests, but reportedly FaceTimed his team-mates from hospital as he told them to finish their Euro 2020 opener after his distressing collapse.
    UNITED IN CARE
Finland fans handed over their team flags to shield stricken Christian Eriksen as the football world united in concern for the Denmark star.
The Inter Milan midfielder, 29, was later “stable” and “awake” in hospital after receiving CPR in the Euro 2020 game.

    JOEL ON HIS GOAL
Finland goalscorer Joel Pohjanpalo gave his verdict on today’s game.
He told Finnish broadcaster YLE: “Of course it was hard for us to go to the pitch, and I can only imagine how hard it was for Denmark.
“A great victory for us, but the foremost thing on our minds is Christian’s condition.”
    MORE FROM HJULMAND
The Denmark head coach admitted his side were mentally drained following the restart to the game.
He said: “First of all, if it gets emotional, it’s been a tough night. We are all reminded of what the most important thing in life is – to have valuable relationships, people we’re close to, our family and our friends.
“We have a group of players that I cannot praise enough. I couldn’t be prouder of those people who took such good care of each other.
“He is one of my very dear friends, the way the players talked in the dressing room to decide to not do anything before we knew Christian was conscious and OK.
“We had two options to play the game [today] or tomorrow at 12pm and everyone agreed to play today.
“You can’t play a game with such feelings. We tried to win. It was incredible they managed to go out and try to play the second half.
“Honestly, there were players out there that were completely done. Emotionally done and emotionally exhausted.”
    ‘MORE IMPORTANT THINGS’
Denmark head coach Kasper Hjulmand was understandably very emotional at the post-match news conference.
He said: “It was a really tough evening, on which we’ve all been reminded what the most important things in life are.
“It’s meaningful relationships. It’s those people who are close to us. It’s family and friends.
“Everything, everything, everything – all thoughts are with Christian and his family.”
    TOUCHING TRIBUTE
UEFA have confirmed that Christian Eriksen has been given the man of the match award following today’s game.
“Football is a beautiful game and Christian plays it beautifully,” says UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin. Tonight’s Star of the Match is Christian Eriksen. Wishing you a speedy recovery, Christian. #EURO2020 pic.twitter.com/gJPa7P2nAx— UEFA EURO 2020 (@EURO2020) June 12, 2021

    MORE FROM FABREGAS
When the news came through that Eriksen was alive and responsive, there was a wave of joy in relief.
Then came the extraordinary further revelation that the players of Denmark and Finland were prepared to return to the pitch.
Again Fabregas proved as eloquent off the field as he once was on it.
Asked by Lineker if he was surprised by the game’s resumption, Fabregas said: “Yes, I am, because today is not a day to play a hero’s game.
“It’s a moment to realise how grateful we are. If it’s their decision, then spot on for them.
“Well done if they are strong enough mentally to cope with it.
“It’s difficult for me to understand how they did it because the images we saw were very very sad.
    “But fair play to them.”
    FAB WORK
SunSport’s Dan King writes: “Cesc Fabregas made his name finding the right pass.
“Today the former Arsenal, Chelsea and Spain star came up with the right words as football tried to come to terms with Christian Eriksen’s shocking collapse.
“When the BBC cut back to the studio from the appalling images at the Parken Stadion in Copenhagen, Fabregas put into words what everyone was feeling.
He said: “How many times do I go home and I am upset? And I ate with my family, with my loved ones.
“And you realise it’s just a game. And we need to enjoy it every second and have passion for it but really there are things that don’t matter anymore.
“More important is health, try to be always happy, enjoy what you have in life, how blessed we are, and that’s it.
“This is a big shock and a reminder for all of us.”
    THOUGHTS FROM SOUTGATE
The England boss has passed on the team’s “very best wishes to Christian and those close to him.”
“We pay tribute to those who went to his aid with such care to give the support he received. Our thoughts remain with Christian and his family tonight.” pic.twitter.com/VM0yIyMe13— England (@England) June 12, 2021

    STATEMENT FROM LINEKER
The BBC host has given his full-time thoughts on Twitter after covering today’s match between Denmark and Finland.
In 25 years of doing this job, that was the most difficult, distressing and emotional broadcast I’ve ever been involved with. Thanks to @cesc4official @AlexScott @MicahRichards for your professionalism, warmth and empathy. Get well soon, Christian Eriksen. 🙌🏻— Gary Lineker 💙 (@GaryLineker) June 12, 2021

    PAYING RESPECTS
Joel Pohjanpalo refused to celebrate out of respect for Christian Eriksen earlier despite scoring Finland’s first goal at a major men’s tournament.

    LUKAKU’S MESSAGE
Elsewhere, Belgium’s game against Russia went ahead as scheduled and Romelu Lukaku gave an emotional shoutout to Christian Eriksen.
The forward dedicated his goal to his Inter Milan teammate after scoring his country’s first strike of Euro 2020.

    FT: DENMARK 0 FINLAND 1
Finland have won their first ever win in a major men’s tournament and they have done so at the expense of their Scandinavian rivals.
But the match will forever be remembered for the horrible incident surrounding Christian Eriksen in the first-half.
Thankfully the Inter Milan star seems to be on the mend but an incredible effort from Denmark to finish the match.
Joel Pohjanpalo’s header ultimately proved to be the matchwinner on a night when the result will prove secondary.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg had a huge chance to equalise from the penalty spot but saw his side-footed effort saved by Lukas Hradecky.
    FT: DENMARK 0 FINLAND 1
AND THAT’S THE WHISTLE!!!! HUGE WIN FOR THE VISITORS
    DENMARK 0 FINLAND 1
93′ – Denmark fans howl for another penalty as Cornelius hits the deck.
But Anthony Taylor awards a free-kick to Finland after the ball hits the striker’s arm.
    DENMARK 0 FINLAND 1
90′ – Four minutes of stoppage time for the hosts to rescue a point.
Vestergaard has gone up front for Denmark and he’s proving a nuisance knocking down long balls.
Elsewhere, Vaisanen has come on for Raitala.
    DENMARK 0 FINLAND 1
85′ – More nervous goalkeeping from Hradecky as he flaps at a cross from Stryger on the right but Poulson is a split-second slow to react.
Raitala manages to get his foot to the loose ball to hack clear for Finland but he seems to have injured himself in the process as he stays down.
    DENMARK 0 FINLAND 1
84′ – Brentford’s Marcus Forss is sent on in place of Pohjanpalo – who stands to be the match winners if it stays like this.
    DENMARK 0 FINLAND 1
81′ – Jensen makes a darting run into the box but his cross into the six-yard box is attempting to find Vestergaard.
But Lod brilliantly gets in front of the Southampton defender trying to turn it home.
    DENMARK 0 FINLAND 1
    80′- BIG CHANCE!! VESTERGAARD!
    DENMARK 0 FINLAND 1
    75′ – Changes from both sides…
Wass and Delaney off for Denmark while Stryger and Cornelius are on.
Finland: Sparv off, Schuller on. Pukki off, Kauko on.
    DENMARK 0 FINLAND 1
This was the moment Hojbjerg saw his penalty saved by Hradecky.
    Credit: Getty
    DENMARK 0 FINLAND 1
Denmark mentally have been through a marathon today and Hojbjerg looked like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders.
Hard to criticise the Spurs ace but it was a timid run up followed by a weak side-footed effort that was read and easily gathered by Hradecky.
    DENMARK 0 FINLAND 1
73′ – SAVE!!! DENMARK FAIL TO GET ON LEVEL TERMS
    HOJBJERG WITH A TERRIBLE PENALTY

BELGIUM have hammered Russia in their opening Euro 2020 fixture.Romelu Lukaku put the Red Devils in front and delivered an emotional tribute to Christian Eriksen, saying ‘Chris, I love you’ to the camera.
Thomas Meunier then netted a second before Lukaku nonchalantly netted a third as the Belgians laid down a marker.

    GOODBYE
It’s been a deeply harrowing day at the European Championships – but we understand there are reasons for hope.
Christian Eriksen’s collapse during Denmark’s match with Finland rendered the tournament meaningless in one frightening moment, yet the 29-year-old is now reportedly awake and stable in hospital this evening.
That game in Copenhagen eventually continued, and so too did events in St Petersburg where Belgium eased past Russia to put down an early marker in Group B.
Romelu Lukaku – an Inter Milan teammate of Eriksen – was in typically brilliant form, and dedicated his two goals in the 3-0 win to the recovering Dane.
The competition should continue as planned if Eriksen’s prognosis is as positive as believed, and that means three more games tomorrow including England’s opener against Croatia at Wembley.
We’ll be back to cover all the action, but our final words tonight are for Christian, and his family, friends and colleagues: Get well soon, you have our very best wishes.
    AN EMOTIONAL NIGHT
Speaking to Belgian television and radio, Romelu Lukaku admitted that preparations for this evening’s match in Russia was incredibly hard following Christian Eriksen’s collapse in Denmark’s earlier game with Finland.
There were a lot of tears before the game. It was difficult to focus. Other players were affected too. I’m going to contact him. I read that he’s out of danger. I hope he’ll be in good health soon. I am happy with the victory, but my thoughts are with Christian.”Romelu LukakuSporza
    PHENOMENAL LUKAKU
With another two goals this evening, Romelu Lukaku’s international form is nothing short of exceptional.

    TOBY’S TRIBUTE
Belgium’s Toby Alderweireld used to play with Christian Eriksen, and the defender has been quick to send his best wishes to his friend following his country’s win this evening.

    FULL TIME STATS
It’s been a routine victory for Belgium, who scored with three of their four shots on target.
    Courtesy of UEFA.Com
    FT: BELGIUM 3-0 RUSSIA
A comfortable win for the number one ranked side in the world. A double from Romelu Lukaku sandwiched an effort from Thomas Meunier as Belgium eased past Russia as has become the norm. The Red Devils’ two-goal hero dedicated his strikes to Inter Milan teammate Christian Eriksen on a night when football felt immaterial in comparison to events elsewhere.
    PEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!THE FINAL WHISTLE IS BLOWN!
    BELGIUM 3-0 RUSSIA
    90. Russia win a free-kick inches outside of the box after Boyata clatters Ozdoev on the shin.
Miranchuk takes charge of the ball and fancies a consolation, but the Atalanta midfielder curls over the top.
    BELGIUM 3-0 RUSSIA
    88. He had barely had a kick in this second half, but Romelu Lukaku often only needs one.
The Belgian striker was on his toes as soon as Thomas Meunier picked up possession in midfield, and when a crisp through ball followed, he tore away from his marker to plant a first-time shot beyond Anton Shunin.
Two goals for Lukaku, three for Belgium, and the Red Devils are up and running!

GOOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLL!!ROMELU LUKAKU DOING WHAT HE DOES BEST!!
    BELGIUM 2-0 RUSSIA
    85. It’s just dawned on me that there’s been three shots in this second half, and not one of them has been on target.
    BELGIUM 2-0 RUSSIA
    83. Dendoncker is penalised for a poor challenge on Mukhin, lunging at his opponent’s shin in an attempt to recover his own heavy touch.
I don’t believe a yellow card was shown to the Wolves player, but one should have been.
    BELGIUM 2-0 RUSSIA
    81. A beautiful turn by Eden Hazard. The Belgian controls the ball and turns one way in a flash while sending his marker in the opposite direction.
    He’s still got some moves.
    BELGIUM 2-0 RUSSIA
    79. The crowd have been partaking in a Mexican wave for the last couple of minutes which should give you some indication as to how this one is petering out.
    BELGIUM 2-0 RUSSIA
    76. Despite boasting some superb attacking talent on the bench such as teenager Jeremy Duku, Belgium decide to make Yuri Zhirkov a little better about himself by bringing on 35-year-old Thomas Vermaelen.
The former Arsenal defender replaces a former Totttenham one in Jan Vertonghen with Eden Hazard taking the captain’s armband.
Also on is Dennis Praet for Yannick Carrasco.
    BELGIUM 2-0 RUSSIA
    74. Eden Hazard picks up the ball for the first time, weighs up his options and then decides to run at the Russians.
He’s stopped in his tracks by a brilliant Semenov tackle.
    BELGIUM 2-0 RUSSIA
    71. Eden Hazard is going to get some minutes under his belt.
The forward has only started 21 games for Real Madrid over the past two years, but Roberto Martinez believes – hope – he can still have a big impact at this international tournament.
He joins his brother on the pitch by replacing Dries Mertens.
    BELGIUM 2-0 RUSSIA
    69. Dzyuba leaves Vertonghen in a heap, and not for the first time.
Marking the Belgian striker is not an enviable task.
    BELGIUM 2-0 RUSSIA
    66. With the injuries mounting up for Belgium, is that going to be a factor that hinders them from finally winning a tournament?
De Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Witsel are all in the squad but struggling for fitness, and Castagne now looks set for a spell on the treatment table.
    BELGIUM 2-0 RUSSIA
    63. Russia’s final two changes, and one of them sees a first half substitute replaced.
Denis Cheryshev replaced Kuzyaev in the first half, but now the Valencia winger is off for Aleksei Miranchuk.
Also on is Maksim Mukhin for Roman Zobnin.
    BELGIUM 2-0 RUSSIA
    62. Ozdoyev reminds Lukaku that he can’t have it all his own way with a well-timed sliding challenge on the far touchline.
    BELGIUM 2-0 RUSSIA
    59. Hazard and Tielemans just exchanged passes four or five times.
    What’s that, a nine-ten rather than a one-two?
    BELGIUM 2-0 RUSSIA
    57. News is filtering through that Castagne sustained a broken eye socket in that first half clash with Kuzyaev.
It’s a worryingly similar injury to the one suffered by Kevin De Bruyne in the Champions League final.

    BELGIUM 2-0 RUSSIA
    55. Belgium are hardly hanging on to the lead, but Russia have at least shown some willingness to compete since the interval.
    BELGIUM 2-0 RUSSIA
    54. Dzyuba tests Courtois’ reflexes with a thumping drive, but the whistle had already gone for a foul on Meunier in the build-up.

    NATIONAL ANTHEMS
The players are currently out on the field proudly singing their National Anthems in harmony with the 16,000+ fans in the stadium.
It’s safe to say that there are a lot of out of tune vocals on show.
    EURO FACTS
If you thought Denmark were the favourites before reading the blog, then you weren’t wrong because the Danes are one of only five teams who have qualified for the Euro’s without recording a single loss along with; Italy, Spain, Ukraine and their Group opponents, Belgium.
But it doesn’t mean that they are invincible and should Finland get Teemu Pukki firing this evening, there is every chance that the Finn’s can cause an upset.
The Finnish forward’s ten goals and one assist out of Finland’s total tally of 16 strikes calculates his involvement rate at 68.75%.
    Anything is possible.
    FINLAND RECENT RESULTS
As for the Finn’s, despite doing so well to qualify for the Euro’s, they are yet to put a victory on their record this calendar year.
As a matter of fact their last six fixtures have resulted in four loses and two draws so it’s not looking good for Finland.
But Markku Kanerva’s side did manage to pull off a 2-1 victory over Bulgaria towards the back-end of last year so the Finn boss will be hoping that his men can rejuvenate that kind of momentum again.

    DENMARK CURRENT FORM
The Danes are hoping to continue their impressive unbeaten run in 2021.
In their last six matches, Denmark have won four games including a staggering 8-0 triumph over Moldova and they managed to hold Germany to a 1-1 draw.
However, Kasper Hjulmand’s men did lose their last game of 2020 to Belgium back in November but they will get the chance for revenge on their match-day 2 of the tournament.

    MINDFUL MARKKU
Markku Kanerva was very open to the fact that the opposite number are going to be a tough nut to crack and his side are considered the underdogs.
But is that all a game plan by the Finland coach for Denmark to take their eye off the ball?
Denmark have a very good team, if we look at their last few matches, they’ve had some magnificent results and have scored a lot of goals. Their defence has worked and they have some great individual players. Denmark are a really tough team and they get to play on home soil, but we have proved we can challenge even bigger countries than Denmark.Markku KanervaUEFA.com
    HUNGRY HJULMAND
The Denmark coach had some words of wisdom ahead of his sides opener this evening and you can tell that he will not take any kind of excuses from his team should they lose.
We shouldn’t go out and lose a match because we’re not well enough prepared, we shouldn’t lose because we didn’t want it more than our opponents, and we shouldn’t lose because we don’t play our best. We must leave everything on the pitch and do everything we can to win.Kasper HjulmandUEFA.com
    MASK OFF
In other news outside of football but still relating to the European Championships, Denmark will be getting rid of the idea that it is mandatory for people to wear masks soon and have allowed 9,000 more fans to attend stadiums up from the original number of 16,000.
Infection rates have significantly dropped as a result of broad lockdown measured implicated late December last year, which has meant that the Nordic country has avoided a third Covid-19 wave.
This is fantastic for all travelling spectators who are waiting to watch the games in the Copenhagen stadium as the news has come just in time for the opening weekend of the major tournament.
However, the Danish Football Association has informed broadcaster TV2 that things are not set in place to welcome 25,000 fans for the opener against Finland this evening.
Justice Minister, Nick Haekkerup said: “The development in infections is at a stable level while the vaccinations of Danes run at a good pace.
Leisure Centres and libraries will be accessible to all even those without a valid Covid-19 passport from June 14th but the pass will be completely abolished at an estimated month of October.
    TEEMU THE TALISMAN
Norwich goal machine, Teemu Pukki is most certainly Finland’s biggest threat and could cause some harm to the Denmark defence today.
The Finnish striker knows how to finish his shots on goal given the opportunity which is why he scored the most goals for his country (10) in the qualifying rounds.
Similar to Christian Erisksen, Pukki is also going into this tournament off the back of league success having fired the Canaries back into the Premier League with his 26 goals in the Championship last campaign.
Take a look at some of his current 2020/21 numbers below.

    EAGLE EYED ERIKSEN
Christian Eriksen is officially a centurion in the Denmark jersey as he has managed to notch up 108 caps for his country.
The 29-year-old is definitely a key member of the Dane squad and arguably one of the most technically gifted attacking midfielders in world football.
Eriksen showed his importance to the team by scoring the most goals for his country in the qualifying stages (5) and after securing the Scudetto with Inter Milan, the talisman’s confidence will be sky high.
Below are Christian Eriksen’s stats from the 2020/21 campaign.

    FINLAND BENCH
    5 Vaisanen, 7 Taylor, 9 Jensen, 11 Schuller, 12 Joronen, 13 Soiri, 15 Hamalainen, 19 Kauko, 21 Lappalainen, 23 Jaakkola, 25 Ivanov, 26 Forss
    FINLAND XI
Similar to his opposite number, Markku Kanerva has fielded his strongest possible eleven and Finland’s very first starting line-up in a major tournament.
The Finn head coach has gone with a 3-5-2 formation which includes Hradecky in between the sticks.
Toivio, Arajuuri and O’Shaughnessy will be used as the goalkeeper’s protection with Uronen and Raitala operating in the full-back positions.
Scottish League winner Glen Kamara gets a start in the midfield alongside Sparv and Lod.
Which leaves Pohjanpalo to partner the dangerous Teemu Pukki up-front.
    1 Hradecky, 4 Toivio, 2 Arajuuri, 3 O’Shaughnessy, 22 Raitala, 8 Lod, 14 Sparv, 6 Kamara, 18 Uronen, 20 Pohjanpalo, 10 Pukki

    SMILES ALL ROUND
It’s good to see that someone is happy with the team sheet.

    DENMARK BENCH
    2 Andersen, 3 Vestergaard, 11 Olsen, 12 Dolberg, 14 Damsgaard, 15 Norgaard, 16 Lossl, 17 Larsen, 21 Cornelius, 22 Ronnow, 24 Jensen, 26 Boilessen
    DENMARK XI
The Dane head coach Kasper Hjulmand has gone with a very strong starting eleven in their opener against Finland.
As predicted Kasper Schmeichel starts in goal with Simon Kjaer as the centre-back pairing.
Thomas Delaney and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg will try to control the middle of the park with Christian Eriksen operating just in front of them.
And Martin Braithwaite has been selected to lead the line up-top for Denmark.
    1 Schmeichel 18 Wass, 4 Kjaer, 6 Christensen, 5 Maehl, 8 Delaney, 23 Hojbjerg, 10 Eriksen, 20 Yurary, 19 Wind, 9 Braithwaite

AND HERE ARE THE STARTING LINEUPS!
    FINLAND SQUAD UPDATE
Star striker Teemu Pukki was the only slight concern for Markku Kanerva but thankfully for the Finn manager and the rest of his side, the Norwich forward seems to have shaken that knock off.
Everybody else is fit and raring to go which means we could see a start for the talented Glen Kamara who is fresh from conquering the Scottish first division with Rangers this season.
    DENMARK TEAM NEWS
Kasper Hjulmand has a fully-fit squad to select from going into the first game of the Euro’s and with the players at hand, the Danes seem to have a slight edge for this encounter.
FA Cup Winner Kasper Schmeichel is the obvious choice in goal after having a brilliant season in between the sticks for Leicester City.
There could be a centre-back pairing of Chelsea’s Andreas Christensen and team captain Simon Kjaer who represents AC Milan at club level in defence.
Tottenham midfielder, Pierre-Emile Hoijberg is likely to clock up another cap in the middle of the park this evening.
And going forward, the Denmark manager has an array of talent to rely upon such as; Barcelona forward Martin Braithwaite, RB Leipzig attacker Yussuf Poulsen or the main man Christian Eriksen who is coming into the competition off the back of a Serie A title winning season with Inter Milan.
    DREAM-LAND
As I mentioned before, this is the first time Finland have EVER qualified for the European Championships which means it is the first time that the country can get ‘EUROHyped’ quoted from the national team’s Twitter admin.

    FINLAND’S ROAD TO EURO 2020
When the Scandinavian outfit were put in a qualifying group with the likes of Italy and Greece, it looked as if another European Championships was going to go by without Finland being part of it.
But a hero named Teemu Pukki came to the rescue and helped fire the Finns to six wins out of ten resulting in them securing second spot behind the Italians for a place in the Euro 2020.

    ‘SO MUCH POWER’
Kylian Mbappe admitted he is a big fan of Liverpool transfer target Jeremy Doku.
In an interview with France Football, Mbappe said: “Recently, I was speaking with my father about a player who impressed me because of his speed qualities, that is (Jérémy) Doku, at Rennes.
“In 5 years as a professional, I have never seen someone from a standing start demonstrate so much power.
“In terms of an incredibly quick player, I would also put Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
“Neymar too, certainly before his injuries. He could change direction with crazy ease.
“There are also players less explosive from a standing start like Kyle Walker at Manchester City. He is like a tank once he hits his speed once he gets into it.”
The right back’s speed and form for Rennes has gained attraction from several suitors, including Liverpool.

    PAY DAY GROAN
Juventus have bettered Barcelona’s offer for Memphis Depay – leaving the Spanish giants fearing another last-gasp hijack after PSG beat them to Georginio Wijnaldum.
PSG nipped in for Wijnaldum with a huge pay offer – and now Juve are said to have offered ex-Manchester United man Depay more money than Barcelona.
Mundo Deportivo say Barca offered a longer contract – three years, with the option of another 12 months.
But Juve are thought to have countered that with a wage package for the 27-year-old worth around £2.5m more.
The suggestion in Spain is that Depay’s head has been turned by Juve matching their enthusiasm to sign him with an eye-watering salary.
And it’s also claimed Barca will NOT respond with an improved pay offer of their own.
    WHAM, BAM, THANK YOU RAM
Arsenal icon Aaron Ramsey has revealed his time at Juventus has been ‘very difficult and frustrating’ as his club future was plunged into more doubt.
Speaking to La Repubblica, he said: “The last two seasons at Juve have been very difficult, frustrating, not only from a physical point of view.
“There have been factors and changes that I was not used to. In the national team, on the other hand, I am happy to have a team that follows me step by step.
“They understand me, they know what I need and also what my body needs.
“Unfortunately sometimes the teams always continue to work in a certain way, too.
“When a player would need more attention… at least now I have the right people around me and then I’ll do everything to get back to a place where I can feel good again, and have confidence.”
    NOU DEAL
Barcelona are set to offer exciting teenager Ilaix Moriba a new contract, according to reports.
In a season which didn’t bring Barca fans much joy, the emergence of Moriba is one thing to celebrate.
The 18-year-old played a big role this season, making 18 first team appearances across all competitions.
And he managed to find the back of the net once, whilst also providing three assists.
According to Spanish outlet Marca, Barca will sit down with the teenager next week to offer him a three or four-year deal.
Moriba’s current contract expires in the summer of 2022.
    MANN DOWN
Man City and Barcelona forward Antoine Griezmann has confirmed that he was not happy when he was benched at various points this season.
And the Frenchman has also squashed murmurs of a rift with Barca and football legend in the making, Lionel Messi.
In an interview with L’Equipe, as seen on Marca, he said: “Yes [I was unhappy at Barcelona]. When you lose the title, for example, it makes me sad.
“Also at the beginning of the season, because I wasn’t playing, I didn’t feel important. I’m used to playing everything – the big games – I find myself on the bench against Real Madrid.
“It’s annoying to see teammates warming up on the pitch while you are next to them.
“But these are the coach’s decisions and I have to accept it and do everything I can to change his mind.”
Antoine Griezmann denies that there is a rift with Barca legend and team-mate Lionel Messi
    CITY SLICKER
Former Celtic boss Neil Lennon has urged Man City to sign Arsenal left-back Kieran Tierney.
Writing in The Times, he said: “When I had him at Celtic, Kieran was really confused about what to do in terms of leaving because the club meant so much to him.
“Ambition and finances meant he made the right call for his career.
“For me, he’s Arsenal’s best player. I could see him going to Manchester City, he’s got all the tools to play for them.
“He’s maybe not got the all-rounded left foot that Andy has, that natural whip, but he’s got everything else and he sees things. He’s so athletic and powerful.”
    GLAD TO HEAR IT
Liverpool are holding talks to sign Florian Neuhaus from Borussia Monchengladbach after Gini Wijnaldum’s exit, reports say.
Dutchman Wijnaldum bid farewell to Liverpool after five years as he decided to leave on a free transfer.
Having initially looked set for a move to Barcelona, PSG hijacked the deal at the last minute by offering Wijnaldum higher wages.
The midfielder, 30, is now due to join the French giants on July 1, with Liverpool already looking for replacements.
According to SPORT1, they have started negotiations to sign Neuhaus, who made 45 appearances last season, with eight goals and assists.
But it is claimed Liverpool are yet to make an official offer to either Monchengladbach or the player.

    BLUE BLOOD
Man Utd summer target Jadon Sancho has admitted that grew up a Chelsea fan.
The Borussia Dortmund and England ace also revealed that he idolised Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba growing up.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Camberwell-born Sancho said: “I was a Chelsea fan growing up, I can’t lie.
“Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard were my favourite players at the time.
“I just love Frank Lampard and how he played his game; he was so direct and so composed on the ball.
    “I like things like that.”
    WAN AND ONLY

The pair have enjoyed going deep-sea diving and swimming with dolphins.
Nara, 34, has been sharing their travels to her 7.8million followers on Instagram.
Last week, Wanda shared their experience on a safari – checking out zebras, elephants and many more animals.
Sticking with the theme of the holiday, Nara showed off her leopard-print swimsuit whilst diving off the coast of Zanzibar.
The pair explored the ocean in awe of the marine wildlife, including the beautiful royal blue tang and dolphins.

    JOAQ TO THE FUTURE
Arsenal have reportedly made their first offer to sign Lazio forward Joaquin Correa.
The Argentina international, 26, chipped in with 11 goals and six assists in 38 games during the 2020-21 campaign.
According to Calciomercato, the Gunners have submitted a £17million offer.
Though the Serie A side are refusing to tell him unless they receive a fee in the region of £26m.
    MOY BUENO

There had been speculation leading the Scotsman with a return to Everton.
Commenting on his new contract, he said: “I am delighted to have committed my future to West Ham United
“This is where I want to be and I’m happy. I’m excited to be given this opportunity to build on what we all have already achieved here.
“The owners and I are fully aligned with how we want to keep developing and improving the football club.
“The Board and everyone at the Club have been fantastic to work with, giving me great support and I feel that we are all united in what we want to achieve in the coming years and how we might be able to achieve those things.”

    RUN FOR KOVA
Chelsea and Croatia ace Mateo Kovacic believes the midfield battle will be key during their clash against England on Sunday.
He said: “I see the midfield as the main topic here. England are very good in terms of attacking, as are we, so it’s two pretty big teams and it’s gonna be a tough team in terms of the midfield.
“They have an excellent midfield. [Mason] Mount is in excellent form. [Declan] Rice as well in West Ham, and [Jordan] Henderson. They have a lot of quality there but so have we – we have excellence there.
“So it’s going to be a tough match, a lot of fights in the midfield, but we’re ready for that. We all know what kind of match we have ahead of us.
“We’re preparing and we are for every match and we’re going to do our best and give our all.”
    TELLI VISION
Arsenal are keeping tabs on Italy and Sassuolo’s Manuel Locatelli at Euro 2020, according to reports.
The midfielder was a standout performer for Sassuolo in Serie A, helping them to an eighth-placed finish.
It earned him a place in Roberto Mancini’s 26-man squad for the delayed European Championships, which kicked off with Italy beating 3-0.
Locatelli started in a three-man midfield, partnering Chelsea’s Jorginho and Nicolo Barella of Inter Milan.
And according to Sky Italia, Arsenal could have been watching with keen interest after targeting the 23-year-old.
Manchester City, PSG, Juventus and Borussia Dortmund are also among the clubs interested in the Italian.
Sassuolo are reluctant to sell such a key part of their side, but it is believed an offer of £34million would be enough to convince them into a deal.
Arsenal are reportedly keeping tabs on Italy and Sassuolo’s Manuel Locatelli
    TRIP NOT IT
Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand has told his former club NOT to sign England right-back Kieran Trippier.
Ferdinand, 42, believes that the LaLiga winner doesn’t fit the profile of right-back that Man Utd should be looking to sign this summer.
But admits that he sees the quality the 30-year-old has and what he brings to the table.
Speaking to Metro, he said: “I don’t think they’d buy someone to come in and play [every week], I think whoever’s coming in there is going to be playing backup.
“They spent £50m on Wan-Bissaka, not to be a backup or No2. He [Trippier] wouldn’t be my choice if I’m honest, but I see the qualities he has.
“But Trippier definitely wouldn’t be my choice in terms of the profile of player that I’d be bringing in to play as a No2 right-back.”
    TIM FOR A CHANGE?
Real Madrid are reportedly eyeing up a shock move for Chelsea forward Timo Werner.
Despite impressing under Thomas Tuchel, the German has struggled for goals having just scored just six times in the Premier League.
According to Fichajes, Carlo Ancelotti is an admirer of the ex-RB Leipzig.
The Italian is said to have spoken about Werner to the Real board as he looks to bring in players this summer.
It has been claimed that Chelsea would be open to selling Werner if they receive a substantial offer.
    NAI BOTHER
Villarreal boss Unai Emery has purchased a controlling stake in Real Union – the club his father and grandfather both played for.
The ex-Arsenal boss, 49, has long been rumoured to take control of the LaLiga founding club that has fallen on hard times in recent years.
Negotiations first started between Emery and third-tier outfit Union last year, only for the coronavirus pandemic to put a temporary halt to talks.
Emery was joined by his brother Igor as well as his lawyer Jose Reta as the Union ownership changed hands.
It remains to be seen what plans the Spanish gaffer has for Union, who have suffered from economic difficulties in recent years.
    DOR CLOSED
Chelsea are ‘unlikely’ to sign Borussia Dortmund superstar Erling Haaland this summer.
Speaking on Sky Sports Transfer Centre, German journalist Rahpael Honigstein said: “There is a possibility but it’s unlikely at this point because the price tag is so big.
“There is also a huge wage bill implication for whoever gets Haaland. They’d have to smash their wage bill and I think a lot of clubs are wary [of that].
“Haaland is available next season for a fairly reasonable 75m euros – that’s not official but it’s a pretty open secret.
“Whatever happens this season, it would really have to force Dortmund’s hand in a way that they can’t say no.
“I think that could be even beyond the wealthiest clubs in Europe this summer.”

    THIS IS EUR MOMENT
SOL CAMPBELL EXCLUSIVE – I’ve never felt more cheated than after my last England game at a Euros.
That’s why I urge Gareth  Southgate’s squad to be themselves and leave nothing behind —  because they may never be in this position again.
Having my extra-time winner against Portugal in Lisbon in 2004 wrongly disallowed was the most frustrating moment of my career.
It was the second time it had happened to me, after the game against Argentina at the 1998 World Cup.

    WHAT ZIYECH?
AC Milan reportedly remain keen to bring Hakim Ziyech to the San Siro next season.
The Chelsea playmaker could be on the move after just one season at Stamford Bridge.
According to Tuttosport, the Morocco international could be available on loan.
Though it has been claimed that it would be difficult for the Serie A side to secure his services.
    LONDON CALLING
Arsenal have reportedly contacted Man Utd over a possible move to sign Donny van de Beek.
Mikel Arteta is in the market to sign a new midfielder with the likes of Granit Xhaka, Matteo Guendouzi and Lucas Torreira all likely to leave.
And with Van de Beek struggling for game time at Old Trafford, it has been said that the Gunners would be keen to lure him to North London.
According to 90min, Arsenal have been in touch with the Red Devils to see if they would be prepared to part ways with him.
And they have requested United to keep them updated on his situation at the club.
    GUNNER JOIN?
Arsenal are reportedly stepping up their interest in Brighton midfielder Yves Bissouma.
The Seagulls ace is a know Gunners fan, and has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates, as well as to Leicester in recent days.
But according to 90min, the Mali international isn’t keen on a move so far up north.
And the news outlet states that Arsenal are looking to strengthen their interest in the ex-Lille ace.
Arsenal are also understood to be eyeing up a move to bring his team-mate Ben White to Arsenal.
    LION IN BED
There’s just one thing Mason Mount doesn’t enjoy about being at a major tournament with best friend Declan Rice – the early morning wake-up call.
Mount and West Ham star Rice, mates since they were at the Chelsea Academy together, have rooms next to each other at England’s St George’s Park headquarters.
Mount said: “He is there next door and every time he wakes up, he wakes up earlier than me and he tries to knock on my door and wake me up to go to breakfast every morning.
“I might have to move a couple of doors down so I’m not right next to him.
“To have my best mate with me and to go through this experience with him and obviously all of the other boys as well, it means a lot.
“It’s something that is very special to us and that we’ll remember for a long time.”
    FAIL OF ROM
Former Man Utd striker Romelu Lukaku has described his hapless spell at Chelsea as a ‘failure’ amid reports suggesting he is targeted by his former club.
Lukaku enjoyed a stunning season at Inter Milan as he led the Serie A giants to their first Scudetto in 11 years with 24 goals in 36 league appearances.
The Belgian star has also expressed his desire to stay at Inter despite their financial difficulties.
Lukaku told HLN when asked to choose between his current employers and the Blues: “Inter. Inter. I have won a title with Inter.
“That was a childhood dream too. At one team I had success, at the other one it was a failure.”
    SAUL OVER IT
Chelsea are reportedly ready to rival Manchester United in the chase for Saul Niguez as Atletico Madrid lower their asking price to £68million.
The Premier League pair are joined by PSG, Juventus and Bayern Munich in tracking the highly rated midfielder.
He is highly rated at Atletico, but due to financial strains amid the coronavirus pandemic, they are open to selling him.
According to Mundo Deportivo, Niguez has release clause of £130m with his contract expiring in 2016.
But Atletico will listen to offers of around £68m and Juventus are said to be the most interested.
