Let’s hope Gabon have that attacking mindset, we could be blessed with an end-to-end game here today.
    Tough nut to crack
Burkina Faso have only lost once in their last nine AFCON matches while Gabon are unbeaten in six.
A Burkina Faso victory would see them progress to their third AFCON quarter final in only four attempts.
    Familiar face
One player Premier League followers will recognise is Burkina Faso’s captain, Bertrand Traore.
The Stallions skipper playing for Aston Villa also.
Can he lead his country to the quarter finals?
    Make us proud
Interviews with players from both sides show just how much it means to them to do well and make their countries proud at AFCON.
Gabon have won the support of their fans back at this tournament according to coach Patrice Neveu.

    Big chance
While neither of these teams are fancied to win the tournament, qualification to the next round is a huge achievement for both.
The chance to include themselves as one of the ‘Big Eight’ of African football.
Burkina Faso beat Gabon in a friendly prior to AFCON 3-0.

    Tale of two stuttering strikers
Romelu Lukaku and Harry Kane both start this afternoon for their respective clubs with each looking to add to their tally of five Premier League goals this season.
The two international stars were expected to be among the top scorers come this stage of the campaign, but have instead endured a difficult few months – albeit for different reasons.
Kane has shown signs of a resurgence in recent weeks, while Lukaku has much to do to regain favour with the Stamford Bridge faithful. Can either make their mark today?

    On the Spurs substitutes’ bench
    22 Gollini, 3 Reguilon, 11 Gil, 12 Emerson, 14 Rodon, 27 Lucas Moura, 29 Skipp, 42 White, 44 Scarlett
    On the Chelsea substitutes’ bench
    13 Bettinelli, 3 Alonso, 7 Kante, 10 Pulisic, 11 Werner, 14 Chalobah, 17 Saul, 18 Barkley, 29 Havertz
Tottenham XI – Bergwijn comes in
It’s four changes for Antonio Conte, who names something of a surprising starting line-up. Emerson Royal, Oliver Skipp Sergio Reguilon and Lucas Moura all drop to the bench as Matt Doherty, Eric Dier, Steven Bergwijn and Ryan Sessegnon come in. It appears as though Doherty and Ben Davies will operate as wing-backs while Bergwijn and Ryan Sessegnon make up a front three with Harry Kane. Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, fresh from signing a new contract, captains a team that is expected to line up in a 3-4-3 shape.
    1 Lloris; 6 Sanchez, 15 Dier, 25 Tanganga; 2 Doherty, 8 Winks, 5 Hojbjerg, 33 Davies; 23 Bergwijn, 10 Kane, 19 Sessegnon

Chelsea starting XI – Lukaku starts
Thomas Tuchel makes two changes to his Chelsea side that stuttered to another draw at Brighton on Tuesday. Marcos Alonso and N’Golo Kante drop to the bench to allow for the return of Malang Sarr and Mateo Kovacic. The German coach continues with the 4-2-2-2 shape he has been using which sees Callum Hudson-Odoi fielded in a forward role off Romelu Lukaku. Kepa continues in goal with Edouard Mendy still at the African Cup of Nations.
    1 Kepa; 28 Azpilicueta, 6 Thiago Silva, 2 Rudiger, 31 Sarr; 8 Kovacic, 5 Jorginho; 22 Ziyech, 19 Mount; 29 Hudson-Odoi, 9 Lukaku

    Chelsea dominant in Spurs rivalry
No matter their own form, or any crisis engulfing the club, Chelsea can always rely on Tottenham to steer them back on course.
That’s the rather confident views of many Blues fans, and, from one look at the head-to-head records, it’s easy to see why.
The Stamford Bridge side are unbeaten in their last six Premier League matches with Spurs, winning five while keeping five clean sheets.
Indeed, Thomas Tuchel has yet to see his side concede a goal to Tottenham in the four games he has overseen as head coach with Chelsea coming out on top by a 7-0 aggregate scoreline.
But Spurs’ hoodoo goes back further than that. The Lilywhites have won only seven of 59 meetings in the Premier League area, and just one of the last 36 away matches at Stamford Bridge.
    Where the sides currently stand
Five points clear in a three-horse title race just weeks ago, Chelsea now find themselves 13 points off the pace and in third place.
Spurs, meanwhile, have catapulted themselves back into the fight for the top four, and find themselves unbeaten in Antonio Conte’s nine games in charge of the club.
This afternoon’s fixtures could play a pivotal part in both clubs’ fortunes come the end of the season.

    Leicester 1-0 Brighton LS

Chelsea and Tottenham battle for striker
Chelsea and Tottenham meet on the pitch today, and they are also battling off it for Lille striker Jonathan David this summer.
The striker has been linked with some of Europe’s other big hitters, like Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Real Madrid.
However, the Canada international is not looking to leave the French champions in January.
But a summer move is becoming increasingly likely, even though the 22-year-old hasn’t narrowed a list of his preferred destinations.
David’s agent Nick Mavromaras hinted that his client could only be convinced to join a new club with an attractive “project”.
Mavromaras recently said: “The questions that we ask clubs are simple: What’s the project [club ambition]?
“There are a lot of questions that we go through when we meet with a club, and the one that checks the most boxes will be the one that will be [David’s] next destination.”
    Blues odds on for victory
It may be no win in four league games for Chelsea, but that hasn’t stopped the bookies from making the European champions odds on to see off Tottenham once again.

    Chelsea win 3/4
    Draw 27/10
    Spurs win 15/4

Odds from Betfair correct at the time of publication.
    Rivals reunite at Stamford Bridge
Good afternoon and welcome to South-West London for our live coverage of the Premier League encounter between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.
Blues fans have watched their title challenge collapse in recent weeks, but there’s nothing like a capital clash with their rivals to reignite passions.
So solid for so long, Thomas Tuchel’s team are now having to deal with defensive issues following a spate of injuries and first-choice goalkeeper Edouard Mendy at AFCON.
It’s only one win in seven for the stuttering European champions, and just two clean sheets in the past 13 league games – which is why a visit from Tottenham may be exactly what the doctor ordered, considering the North London side haven’t scored against them in the past five meetings.
Yet perhaps Spurs have finally found some spirit of their own. Their dramatic stoppage time success at Leicester in midweek again suggested that Antonio Conte’s side may be made of stronger stuff
Steven Bergwijn’s heroics off the bench could be rewarded with a start, particularly in the continued absence of Son Heung-min, while Eric Dier is expected back after three weeks out.
Spurs are still unbeaten in the Premier League since Conte took charge, but the Italian did suffer Capital One Cup semi-final disappointment over two feeble legs against his former club earlier this month. Is today the time to put it right?
It’s all set for a 4.30pm start at the Bridge, and we’ll soon have confirmation of the two teams as we build up to kick-off.

    46. No changes to tell you about from either side but should the flow of this game continue in the same manor, I can see the substitutes being brought into play early.
I just wonder who will make the first move, it really is like a game of chess.
Second half – Man Utd 0-0 West Ham
We’re back under-way at Old Trafford and let’s hope that we get a much better half than the first.
    A land above the rest
Declan Rice is the only player who can hold his head up high after his first half perfomance.

    First 45 description through stats
There you have it people, not a single shot on target from either side.

A rundown of the opening half
If I had to rate the first 45 minutes out of 10, I would give it a 4 because how on earth have we not had one shot on target from either side yet?
The Hammers came flying out the blocks and looked very threatening, however, the home fans inside the ground began to sing louder which resulted in their team being on top in terms of possession.
Cristiano Ronaldo had a very good chance to nod home Bruno Fernandes’ cross and also had a penalty appeal waved away but that was it in terms of goal mouth action.
Thankfully there is still another half to go so let’s hope for at least a strike on target.
    Nothing to seperate the sides
Stalemate at the break ladies and gentleman.
    Credit: @ManUtd
Half time – Man Utd 0-0 West Ham
Jonathan Moss decides that there is no need for any additional times as the referee blows his whistle for the interval.
It hasn’t been the game of fireworks which many expected it to be so far which is quite disappointing.
There were a few half chances from both sides but not one shot on target in 45 minutes of football is relatively poor.
    Man Utd 0-0 West Ham
    43. The one thing I would say about this game is despite some of the good passages of play, neither keep is yet to be tested so far.
Quite surprising when you think of the amount of talent which is on display at Old Trafford this afternoon but there is still plenty more football to be played.
    Battling for the important breakthrough
Both sets of players all over the pitch are giving it all they have got to try and help their club take the upper-hand in this top four clash.

Man Utd 0-0 West Ham – that was naughty Ronaldo!
    37. Cristiano Ronaldo is beginning to get frustrated because the West Ham centre-halves are doing everything they can to mark him out of the game.
So much so that the Portuguese icon pushed over Craig Dawson in attempts to win the ball back once he lost it.
    Man Utd 0-0 West Ham
    34. Alex Telles is having a really good game by bombing forward every time to support the attack but his only problem is that whenever he puts a cross in, nobody is their to nod it home.
Alphonse Areola will be happy with that all day because it means that the goalkeeper can leave Old Trafford with a clean sheet on his Premier League debut for the Hammers.
Man Utd 0-0 West Ham – good defending Varane
    31. The Hammers almost caught Manchester United out on a counter-attack move but former Real Madrid rock Raphael Varane was in the right place to cut it out.
That is what you pay the big bucks for.
    Man Utd 0-0 West Ham
    28. Bruno Fernandes has gone crazy at the referee for awarding a free-kick in which the Portuguese international felt was too soft.
I have no idea how Fernandes didn’t get carded for that because usually, Jonathan Moss is a man who is not scared to show a yellow card or too.
    Man Utd 0-0 West Ham
    25. No matter what the visitors do, they cannot break forward because Manchester United are executing Ralf Rangnick’s gegenpressing style of play so well.
All that is missing from this performance is a goal.
    Cristiano knows he came close
The face of a man who knew that if he connected with his fellow countryman’s cross, it would of added to his incredible record against the Hammers.

Man Utd 0-0 West Ham – another chance goes begging!
    20. This time it was Mason Greenwood trying to get on the end of one of those Bruno Fernandes specials and the Englishman did better than Ronaldo because he was able to make contact with the ball.
However, Greenwood was unable to keep his header on target.
The pressure is ramping up on David Moyes’ side, they need to start putting a few passes together otherwise it could be a long afternoon.
Man Utd 0-0 West Ham – Ronaldo that was close!
    19. Bruno Fernandes picked up the ball on the left-hand side and whipped in a fantastic ball to the back post for Cristiano Ronaldo to attack.
Which is exactly what the Portuguese legend did his diving header was whiskers away with connecting with the ball.
Any sort of contact and that was a certain goal.
    Man Utd 0-0 West Ham
    18. It’s all Manchester United now as they push the Hammers further and further back towards their own goal.
Can the hosts make this pressure count?
    Man Utd 0-0 West Ham
    15. Ralf Rangnick’s side are beginning to get a foothold of the game with Manchester United now enjoying more possession.
The fans inside the stadium have acknowledged this and are trying to do everything in their power to life the spirts of the hosts.
This has been an intriguing contest so far.
    Man Utd 0-0 West Ham
    12. Finally, the hosts construct their first bit of threatening play in the game and for all of their attacking talent, it’s Diogo Dalot who provided it.
The full-back did well to beat a couple of defenders before squeezing his cross into the box, but not a single red shirt was able tog et on the end of it.
Only Vladimir Coufal who is on the opposing team.
    Decent first strike from Declan
Declan Rice with the first effort of the game and by the standards of these two clubs, it will definitely not be the last.
Fantastic block by Raphael Varane by the way.

    Man Utd 0-0 West Ham
    7. Without causing any real danger to David De Gea’s goal, the visitors have controlled possession inside the opening ten minutes.
West Ham haven’t done much with it yet but David Moyes will be happy with the start they have made so far.
As for Man United, they need to wake up otherwise I can see them conceding a goal soon.
    Man Utd 0-0 West Ham
    4. Ooo I thought that was going to be Cristiano Ronaldo’s moment as Bruno Fernandes cut through the West Ham defence with a well-executed ball.
However, Ronaldo’s eagerness deterred the Portuguese icon from holding his line relieving the pressure off the Hammers.
Man Utd 0-0 West Ham – early shot blocked!
    3. West Ham skipped Declan Rice pulled off a supberb skill before letting fly from distance.
But the English international was disappointed to see his effort blocked which was heading directly for David De Gea’s goal.
    Man Utd 0-0 West Ham
    1. With Ralf Rangnick’s men being the hosts, Man United are representing themselves in their prestigious red jersey with white shorts and black socks.
As for the Hammers, they have turned up in their light blue Jersey, shorts and socks hoping to spoil the Old Trafford party.

    That’s all from Cameroon
Gambia defeated Tunisia 1-0 in a dramatic encounter at the Limbe Stadium that saw both teams qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations’ Last 16.
The Eagles of Carthage missed a golden opportunity to open the scoring in the first half after 43 minutes when Pa Modou Jagne fouled Seifeddine Jaziri in his own area.
Jaziri took on the spot-kick but his poor shot was blocked by Gambian goalkeeper Baboucarr Gaye, who lunged to his bottom right corner.
Tempers flared at half-time and the referee showed a red card to Tunisia’s reserve goalkeeper Farouk Ben Mustapha for unsportsmanlike behaviour.
Nothing really changed in the second half until stoppage time when Musa Barrow delivered a fantastic cross from the left flank and found Ablie Jallow on the far post.
Jallow then delivered a powerful shot and sent the ball to Bechir Ben Said’s top left corner in the third minute of stoppage time to win the game with the final kick.
Mali also beat Mauritania 2-0 thanks to Massadio Haidara as well as Ibrahima Kone’s goals and topped Group F.
Gambia finished second whereas Tunisia made it through as one of four best third-placed teams from the group stage.
That’s all from us here at SunSport, have a great night!

    What’s next?
As mentioned earlier, Mali, Gambia and Tunisia have all qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations’ Last 16.
As it stands the Tunisians will meet Nigeria on January 23 at the Roumde Adija Stadium
Gambia, on the other hand, will lock horns with Guinea on January 24 at the Kouekong Stadium.
And finally, Mali will take on Equatorial Guinea on January 26 at the Limbe Stadium
    Mejbri situation
It looks like Tunisia and Manchester United youngster Hannibal Mejbri was just shown a yellow card.
Mejbri was cautioned for a rough foul during stoppage time and his team-mate Mohamed Drager was also booked for protesting.
There was a little mix up as the referee also pulled out a red card but the Africa Cup of Nations’ official page doesn’t show anyone getting sent off.
Shortly after, Gambia broke the deadlock and scored with Ablie Jallow
    GETTY IMAGES
    Final table
Mali finished top of Group F with the same points as the Gambia.
Therefore, those two teams have qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations’ Last 16.
Tunisia will join them as one of four of the best third-placed teams in the Copa Africa.

Tunisia dominated a whopping 70 per cent of possession and still lost to the Gambia.
The Eagles of Carthage registered a total of 19 shots, three of which were on target.
Gambia, on the other hand, only needed 10 shots, three of which were on target, to seal qualification to the Africa Cup of Nations’ Last 16.
The Tunisians’ passing was far more effective as they had a success rate of 82 per cent, compared to the Scorpions’ 59 per cent
    Mali 2-0 Mauritania
Mali also picked up a major win against Mauritania at the Douala Stadium.
The Malians opened the scoring just after two minutes with Massadio Haidara.
They then started the second half in the exact same way as Ibrahima Kone made it two from the penalty spot on 49 minutes.
Mali have just punched their ticket to the Africa Cup of Nations’ Last 16 while Mauritania finished last

    FT: Gambia 1-0 Tunisia
Gambia defeated Tunisia in a dramatic encounter at the Limbe Stadium.
The Eagles of Carthage had a golden opportunity to open the scoring in the first half after 43 minutes when Pa Modou Jagne fouled Seifeddine Jaziri in his own area.
Jaziri took on the spot-kick but his poor effort was blocked by Gambian goalkeeper Baboucarr Gaye, who lunged to his bottom right corner.
Tempers flared at half-time and the referee sent Tunisia’s reserve goalkeeper Farouk Ben Mustapha off for unsportsmanlike behaviour.
Nothing really changed in the second half until stoppage time when Musa Barrow delivered a fantastic cross from the left and found Ablie Jallow on the far post.
Jallow then delivered a powerful shot and sent the ball to Bechir Ben Said’s top left corner in the third minute of stoppage time to win the game on the final kick.
During the closing moments, it seemed like the referee had sent Tunisia and Manchester United youngster Hannibal Mejbri off but that may have not been the case – we will keep you updated

Arsenal vs Liverpool LIVE REACTION: Jota dream double sees Liverpool book EFL Carabao Cup place vs Chelsea – latest

LIVERPOOL are through to the Carabao Cup final after winning 2-0 at Arsenal in the semi-final second leg.Portuguese sensation Diogo Jota scored both the games, which were both assisted by Trent Alexander-Arnold.
BETTING SPECIAL – GET £40 IN FREE BETS ON THE AFCON
    Jot on the cards
Jurgen Klopp reckons he always knew Diogo Jota would repay his £40million transfer fee.
The German master said: “We scored two wonderful goals, Diogo Jota is on fire.
“We were completely convinced when he arrived at the club he would help us massively.
“Since he is here he has made another step, he has turned into a really world class striker.”
    Chances blown
Arteta knows his side paid the price for missing chances in both halves.
Lacazette was guilty of spurned opportunities, as was Smith-Rowe and Martinelli.
The Spanish boss said: “We are really disappointed not to be in the final but we played against a top side.
“We had big moments in both halves and when you have those moments you have to score.
“They had nothing and then got a bit of luck to score the first and then they put the game to bed.
“We pushed for the game but you have to convert your chances like Liverpool did.”
    Yellow peril
The FA is investigating a yellow card an unnamed Arsenal player received in a Premier League game earlier this season.
Irregular betting patterns were noticed and the situation is being investigated.
Mikel Arteta knows about it and remains calm.
He said: “I am aware of it. Investigations are really common into certain things and we will see what happens.”
    Art of war
Mikel Arteta defends Thomas Partey getting sent off in a 15 minute cameo.
The midfielder only flew into London at midday after a 12-hour flight back from Cameroon.
He said: “I regret that I cannot use him now, he made the effort to come and we had to play him.
“We decided to use him and unfortunately it happened. The red card was not because he arrived late.
“The red cards are a concern for me because we played the last three games with 10 men and  it is extremely difficult to win football matches.”
    Big Dijk hails little Jota
Liverpool giant Virgil van Dijk sings the praises of his side’s star striker.
Diogo Jota has grabbed the baton while Sadio Mane and Mo Salah are in cameroon for the Afcon.
He said: “Diogo Jota is already a fantastic player, the numbers speak for themselves.
“He is very important, he has shown it from last year and a difficult striker/winger to play against. I know it from training. He has stepped up tonight again.
“He took the second goal fanatically well, a great ball form Trent Alexander-Arnold and it put relief in the team.
“If it was 1-0 in the last 10 minutes it might have been tricky. We controlled the game overall and did not have massive chances.”
    German double
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is informed the League Cup final with Chelsea will be the first British final contested by two German managers.
“Sorry!” he jokes when given the stat.
“We have plenty of time and games before then and it will not be about two german managers.
“It will be about two good football teams.”
    Jota on fire
Klopp beamed: “A final at Wembley is great, it was due and we are really happy about it, we are over the moon.
“It was a difficult game and a difficult time but the boys made it an exceptional night.
“Arsenal started pretty lively, with the crowd, but we calmed it down.
“We scored two wonderful goals, Diogo Jota is on fire, absolutely outstanding.”
    Alexander-Arnold loving fan power
The last time Liverpool had something to celebrate, covid rules meant fans were kept away.
So the assist king is excited to see all the Scousers at Wembley next month against Chelsea.
He said: “It is what we want, it was not the same when we left Anfield as an empty stadium (after winning the Premier League).
“It has been a while to lift a trophy and it is good for us to be in a final. There are still 90 minutes to do that against a top side.”
    Mercy for Mikel
Arsenal legend Paul Merson has some sympathy for the struggling Gunners manager.
You can’t win everything with kids, apparently.
Merson says: “They will be disappointed and the problem Arteta has is this is a young team that can be up and down.
“Around 27 and older you get consistency, 7/10s week after week.
“But younger than that and you can lurch from 9s to 4s.”
    TAA’s allstar
The Liverpool ace says: “It’s good for us to get to the final, it is what we expect.
“We performed very well tonight and we deserved the win.
“We never gave them too many chances, we kept them at bay and we created a couple ourselves.
“Both goals were outstanding and Diogo is a world class player in possibly the best form of his time here.”
    League Cup Lovers from Liverpool
Liverpool’s victory tonight sees them qualify for the League Cup final for the 13th time, the most of any team in the competition’s history.
Nailing down the earliest possible trophy could help the Anfield club finish strong in other competitions.
    Jurgen Klopp will be beaming.
    Empty Emirates
No trophies in the beautifully crafted Emirates cabinet this year.
Will Arteta accept defeat graciously. Or will excuses tumble from his narrow little lips?
Either way, nothing to celebrate for the Gunners this season. Nada.
    Arsenal 0 Liverpool 2
    All over.
    Arsenal out.
Liverpool vs Chelsea in the League Cup final.
Partey cancelled. Work events hanging on by a thread.
    Arsenal 0 Liverpool 2
93 Liverpool threaten to add insult to injury, defeat and suspension but the Arsenal backline holds out.
Jota is named the MotM thanks to his two goals.
Partey was apparently third in the running among Gooooooners.
    Arsenal 0 Liverpool 2
92 Partey was sent on after 74 minutes.
Booked for the first time on 87 minutes.
And was running the early bath by 90.
    Toodles Tom.
    Arsenal 0 Liverpool 2
90 Thomas Partey is sent off for two yellows.
He has been on just a few minutes.
He only landed in England at lunchtime back from Afcon.
    Should not have bothered.
    Arsenal 0 Liverpool 2
89 “Mum, dad, I am going down the Emirates to launch myself onto the world stage and make my name.”
“What coat of you got on, don’t tell me it’s that ropey excuse for a parka again?”
“Yes it is thank you but it’s fine, the trim is just a bit worn.”
    Arsenal 0 Liverpool 2
That parka has left a really bad taste in my mouth.
If you are going to get arrested while beging for the attention of tens of thousands of people, have a decent coat on.
I hope the police address this with him and confiscate the offending item.
    Arsenal 0 Liverpool 2
84 Bobby Firmino gets a rest so Neco Williams can have a few minutes of cameo action.
A dim-witted fan invades the pitch and teases the stewards until his capture earns a roar from the crowd.
The offender was wearing a cheap parka – you know the ones where the fur lining looks like a lanky squirrel has died on your mum’s anorak.
    Arsenal 0 Liverpool 2
82 Martinelli – by far Arsenal’s best player – blasts a self-made chance over the bar.
Jones gets booked for losing the ball and fouling his Arsenal counterpart.
Mikel Arteta’s men are going out with a bit of a whimper now.
    Arsenal 0 Liverpool 2
76 Jota scores after beating the Arsenal offside trap.
The Liverpool forward sneaks in and dinks Ramsdale but the flag flies up and VAR checks
It takes an age but Martin Atkinson points to the centre spot.
    Ruthless Liverpool, toothless Arsenal.
    Arsenal 0 Liverpool 1
74 Eddie Nketiah replaces Lacazette and Thomas Partey replaces Smith-Rowe.
Partey only landed in London this lunchtime after the Afcon.
Liverpool hack away everything Arsenal try.
James Milner comes on for Jordan Henderson.
    Arsenal 0 Liverpool 1
73 Martinelli gives Liverpool a brief fright but firing at the top corner on the angle but Kelleher palms it off for a corner.
    Liverpool clear the next cross.
Martinelli tries again but the yellow defence is solid.
    Arsenal 0 Liverpool 1
71 Odegaard tries to muster an opening.
Martinelli does his best too but Van Dijk heads his cross away.
    Liverpool’s defence is watertight.
    Arsenal 0 Liverpool 1
69 Contract rebel Eddie Nketiah is preparing to enter the game for Lacazette.
His side is almost 2-0 down but Minamino fires into a haze of Arsenal bodies instead of the goal.
Liverpool are enjoying possession now while Arsenal are rushing and wasting theirs.

    The great wall of Ivory
Ivory Coast frustrating Riyad Mahrez by not enabling the Algerian’s free-kick to get past the wall.

    Ivory Coast 0-0 Algeria
    3. After a long build-up with the referee Victor Gomes letting the players know they must wait until the whistle has blown before anything can happen, Mahrez smashes the ball into the wall.
What an anticlimactic experience that was.
Ivory Coast 0-0 Algeria – early free-kick in a dangerous position!
    2. That wasn’t so smart from Jean Michael Seri who has committed a foul on Baghdad Bounedjah right outside the 18-yard-box.
Riyad Mahrez has picked up the ball and the Algerian has no doubt in his mind what he wants to do.
    Ivory Coast 0-0 Algeria
    1. The Elephants are favourites to go through this afternoon and many people have them jotted down to win the tournament altogether.
But nobody would have predicted that Algeria’s hopes of defending the AFCON crown would have been riding on their last group game especially as they came into the tournament on a historic unbeaten run.
Kick-off – Ivory Coast vs Algeria
Finally! The highly anticipated match between two successful nations in the African continent is under-way.
The other match in Group E – Sierra Leone vs Equatorial Guinea also has lift off too so we will be keeping a close eye on that match because what happens over at Stade Limbe will have an impact on the result in this game vice versa.
    Tunnel vision all around Cameroon
With so much riding on both games, it has built up some serious tension in both tunnels because no player wants to let their nation down.
If only we could play you the noises that are coming out of Stade Jampoma which features Ivory Coast vs Algeria or Stade Limbe who is the hosting Sierra Leone vs Equatorial Guinea because both sets of crowds are certainly fired up.
    AFCON round of 16 scenarios
In the African Cup Of Nations, the best third-placed teams out of the six groups can still progress to the round of 16 so it raises the stakes for every team even if they are sitting bottom of their group going into match-day three.
But the most secure spots are of course first and second which is still yet to be decided in Group E and here is who each nation is expected to could face depending on how the table concludes by this evening.
Winners of Group D (Nigeria) vs third place of Group B/E/F
Winners of Group A (Cameroon) vs third place of Group C/D/E
Winners of Group E vs runners-up of Group D
Winners of Group F vs runners-up of Group E
    The inspector gadgets are out
It seems as even though I mentioned a bobbly pitch making the football more exciting, not everyone is happy with the conditions of the field.

Sierra Leone vs Equatorial Guinea head-to-head
Sierra Leone and Equatorial Guinea have only crossed paths six times since data has been recorded but the Leone Stars have been the dominant force in this encounter.
    Check out the numbers below:

    Sierra Leone wins – 4
    Draws – 1
    Equatorial Guinea wins – 1

    Equatorial Guinea striving for success
Central African country Equatorial Guinea were on decent form entering AFCON 2022 and it is having an impact on their performances in Group E.
Juan Micha’s side won 60% of their matches before the opening game of the tournament winning six in ten across all competitions so when they lost to Ivory Coast last Wednesday, it would have brought the National Thunder back down to Earth.
However, beating Algeria four days ago put them back on track so all they need to do is this afternoon is to collect a point and hope that Ivory Coast do them a favour against the Algerian’s.
    Sierra Leone’s poor recent run
The Leone Stars have had an average campaign up to this point having drawn their first two group games when they were expected to have lost at least once by this stage, but John Keister’s men haven’t had the best run of results coming into the tournament.
In their last 13 fixtures across all competitions, Sierra Leone have only managed to secure two victories and one of those wins was irrelevant because they still got kicked out of the competition via an aggregate score line.
All the Leone Stars need to do tonight is beat their opponents; sounds simple enough but when you have only won twice in 13 attempts, then it suddenly becomes a steep hill to climb.
    Equatorial Guinea members on command
    2 Maye, 5 Anvene, 7 Belima, 9 Siafa, 10 Nsue, 12 Mba, 14 Sam, 19 Nlavo, 20 Eneme, 23 Meseguer, 24 Balboa, 28 Enrique
    Equatorial Guinea players to start!
Juan Micha has felt the need to rotate his striking option despite fighting hard to get that shocking 1-0 victory over the current holders Algeria.
Oscar Siafa gets dragged and in steps Hanza
    (4-4-2): 1 Owono; 15 Akapo, 21 Esteban, 16 Coco, 11 Nichama; 6 Salavador, 22 Ganet, 8 Machin, 17 Miranda; 4 Bikor, 18 Hanza
    Sierra Leone subs if needed
    4 Mohamed Medo-Kamara (GK) 8 Fofanah, 9 Williams, 11 Kaikai, 12 Kamara, 13 Kargbo, 14 Buya Turay, 15 Dunia, 16 Sessay, 20 Mansaray, 22 Kallon, 23 Isaac Caulker
    Sierra Leone starting lineup paper!
After that fascinating and gutsy performance last time out against the Ivorian’s, John Keister didn’t feel the urge to tinker with the squad too much.
However, the Sierra Leone boss has made the one change in midfield which is Abu Dumbaya coming in for Mohamed Buya Turay
    (4-2-3-1): 1 Kamara; 2 Kakay, 17 Bangura, 5 Steven Caulker, 3 Wright; 6 Kamara, 12 Dumbaya; 7 Quee, 10 Kei Kamara, 19 Bundu; 28 Musa Noah-Kamara

    Ivory Coast vs Algeria head-to-head
Overall, the figures between the two huge nations are close in terms of victories. Feast your eyes on them below:

    Ivory Coast wins – 8
    Draws – 7
    Algeria wins – 9

    Algeria’s recent run of form
If anybody knows how told go on a run of games without losing it is Algeria because coming into AFCON 2021, the Greens were on a 31-game unbeaten run winning 21 of those including a penalty shootout victory over today’s opponents Ivory Coast.
But eyebrows were raised when Djamel Belmadi’s side weren’t able to capitalise on their 69% possession against Sierra Leone in their opening group game and then things went from bad to worse when they saw their streak go up in smoke courtesy of a 1-0 defeat to Equatorial Guinea last Sunday.
Algeria will be desperate to get the unbeaten run up and going again but it needs to start with a win here and possibly an emphatic one too.
    Ivory Coast’s previous 14 fixtures
The Ivorian’s have been in good form coming into this competition and have somewhat continued those performances in their two opening group games.
Despite being denied a second consecutive win in AFCON having beaten Equatorial Guinea on match-day one, they were all over the Leone Stars controlling a large percent of the possession and hitting almost twice as many shots on goal but the one mistake from keeper Badri Ali Sangare proved to be costly.
However, the Elephants still didn’t lose the game which was the silver lining for them once the dust had settled and it meant that Ivory Coast head into this afternoon’s encounter against Algeria on a 14-match unbeaten run.
    Ivory Coast players in reserve
    1 Tape, 5 Kanon, 9 Zaha, 10 Kouassi, 11 Cornet, 12 Maiga, 13 Boga, 20 Serey-Die, 21 Bailly, 24 Kouame, 26 Cisse, 28 Boli
Ivory Coast team sheet revealed! – Nicolas Pepe makes his second consecutive appearance!
After failing to capitalise on their possession and hold their lead in the previous group game against Sierra Leone, the Elephants gaffer Patrice Beaumelle has decided to make a switch up-top which is Max Gradel coming in for Crystal Palaces’ Wilfried Zaha.
And was forced into brining in Kossounou to replace Eric Bailly whose slight knock permits him to the bench.
But the one surprising element is that, goalkeeper Badra Ali Sangare starts despite rumour circulating that he wasn’t able to feature this afternoon.
    (4-3-3): 23 Sangare; 17 Aurier, 7 Kossounou, 14 Deli, 3 Konan; 18 Sangare, 4 Seri, 8 Kessie; 15 Gradel, 22 Haller, 19 Pepe
    Credit: CAF_Online
Algeria members to call upon – Former Leicester City forward Slimani only makes the bench
    1 Zeghba (GK) 2 Tahrat, 10 Feghouli, 11 Braihimi, 12 Belkebla, 13 Slimani, 14 Bendekba, 15 Boulaya, 19 Zorgane, 24 Chetti, 25 Benyada, 26 Amoura
Algeria first XI is in! – Both of their Premier stars are starting!
Djamel Belamadi has decided to make some alterations from the side who were unable to hold their unbeaten record against Equatorial Guinea last Sunday.
The injury to Benlamri means in steps Bensebaini and Sofiane Feghouli loses his spot to West Ham’s Said Benhrama
    (4-2-3-1): 23 M’Bolhi; 20 Atal, 21 Bensebaini, 2 Mendi 17 Bedrane; 6 Zerrouki; 22 Bennacer, 27 Benrahama, 8 Belatili, 7 Mahrez; 9 Bouncedjah
    Credit: @LesVerts
    Equatorial Guinea’s fully fit team
Similar to his opposite number, Equatorial Guinea manager Juan Micha has a full-fledged team to select from this afternoon as all of his players escaped the 1-0 win over Algeria without set-backs.
The only negative from that match was Olympiacos Volos forward Oscar Siafa failing to have any influence up-top which led to the 24-year-old being hooked off at the interval so there would be no surprises to see Micha not involve Siafa from the start.
    No Sierra Leone injury concerns
For all of Sierra Leone’s fight and efforts in their surprise draw with 2x AFCON champions Ivory Coast, the Leone Stars’ gaffer John Keister was fortunate to not see any of his players leave the field with an injury.
Which could mean that it is expected for him to go with the same starting eleven who performed that heroic display four days ago.
In addition to that, Barnet defender David Sessay tested negative twice so we should see the 23-year-old in and amongst the squad this afternoon.
On the flip side, Danish side Randers’ front man Alhaji Kamara was used as a super sub and he fulfilled his duties when the 27-year-old grabbed the equaliser deep into stoppage time so that might have earned him a spot in the first XI this afternoon.
    Algeria is in the building
In continuation to Djamel Belmadi’s side, the Greens have stepped foot on the green for the first time this afternoon.

    ‘destroyed, killed, smashed’
Brentford boss Thomas Frank had some brilliant words to describe how his started against Manchester United.
He said: “Unbelievably proud of my team. We are the smallest club in the Premier League, Manchester United the biggest.
“We destroyed them in the first half, they didn’t have a sniff, three huge chances and there could only have been one winner of this game.
“They are unbelievably lucky. I know all the stuff about taking chances. They changed the system against little Brentford.
“One of those nights, fair play to David de Gea, if we get those chances again one will go in the back of the net.
“Our intensity killed them, we showed that in the first half, we played the Brentford way.
“Of the three goals, the second is most disappointing and difficult to come back from.
“The way we smashed them in the first half was fantastic, so proud of my team.”
    Ron sulk explained
Rangnick watched his veteran talisman moan and groan at being subbed but was not offended.
He said: “It’s normal because as a striker he wants to score goals.
“We have another game in three days time and were 2-0 up.
“I think it was the right decision and then we scored the third goal.”
    Rang the changes
The victorious Man United manager was fuming with his side’s first half efforts.
Rangnick said: “It was not a strong conversation (at half time) but we had to change a few things because we were not good in the first half in almost every way.
“Our passing was sloppy, we were not strong enough in 50-50s and gave away second balls.
“In the second half we were more urgent and were attack them higher up the pitch and making the right decisions.”
    Rash decision
Marcus Rashford was dropped to the bench but came on and scored.
Ferdinand says: “I would love to know what he was thinking sitting on the bench watching Elanga.
“His answer was the goal, which is fabulous.
“Maybe he thinks he is happy to be taking out the firing line for tonight.
“Or was his pride and ego hurting and he was desperate to get out there?”
    Young guns firing
Ferdinand said: “No matter how you play or what form you are in, you still need brilliance sometimes , you always need that stardust to win games.
“Elanga keeps the full-back honest, makes his defender run back.
“It was good to hear him say in the interview that he likes to train the way he plays.”
    Elang road to go
Anthony Elanga notched and helped get the win for Ralf Rangnick.
He said: “I appreciate the boss so much, you see the intensity in training and I just work as hard as I can. I train the way I want to play”.
On David De Gea’s first-half heroics, he said: “David is a life saver, one of the best in the world and I just want him to keep doing what he is doing.”
    Ferdin-hand it to them
Rio Ferdinand was impressed with how United turned things around.
He said: “You need big players to step up and David De Gea did that in the first half.
“United weathered a storm and were nervy but they managed the game well in the end.
“It stretched in the second half because of good play from big players.
“Bruno (Fernandes) got two assists and McTominay was head-and-shoulders above everybody”.

    All over in West London.
United weathered a torrent of attacks in the first half but get home and dry thanks to Brentford’s misifring midfielders.
Ronaldo is still sat in the dugout complaining about getting subbed – the fourth official has glazed over with boredom (probably).

    94 What a waster
Fernandes gets a free hit but tries to dink Lossl.
Like a Panenka penalty going wrong, the Bees keeper catches the ball and the United midfielder is embarrassed.
Sloppy from the usually ruthless finisher.

93 The fourth official announces we will see four extra minutes.
Sorensen hurls in another long throw but Matic heads away.
Lossl launches one forward but Varane clears, Wissa and Norgaard try to muster something but are pushed back.
Martin Keown rates dalot as the MotM but De Gea probably earned it in the first half.

88 It looks like only being a consolation goal for the Bees, they needed it to come so much earlier.
Mbeumo takes a final corner that Pinnock gets a free head on.
But De Gea is able to claim it cooly from the sky.

84 Toney pulls one back for the Bees finally
McTominay makes one final clearance and goes to ground again, it was madness for him to try battling through the pain with the three points bagged.
    Nemanja Matic comes on.
And then the Bees take a corner and Toney bundles it in when United hesitate to clear.

81 Rock hard Scotsman McTominay needs some medical attention for a blow to his back.
The midfield dynamo has been a powerhouse so far this season and Rangnick will need him.
But with the game won he could afford to rest up and recover properly.

80 Brentford remind us a little of Brighton last night.
The Seagulls had dozens of early chances against Chelsea but kept missing and looked like they would pay.
Potter’s side got the result they deserved – eventually.
But the Bees are being punished at home tinight.

76 Rashford fires home after Brentford miss another chance.
Brentford miss chance #36 as Toney fires into Varane.
The early clear-cut chances were all wasted on Toney’s team-mates but he has fluffed his couple now too.
And United make them pay again by racing up the other end and letting the sub fire in from the angle on the right.

74 Ronaldo is STILL grumbling about getting hooked – while his side is 2-0 up at Brentford.
Rangnick got it, the subs, the kitman, we just saw the tea lady hide behind the dugout before he started boring her with tales of his magnificence.
At least he knows he will start the next game.
    Paper over the cracks
72 Ronaldo goes off in a huff, muttering and moaning and slamming his coat into his chair.
Sub Maguire takes a page of note paper onto the pitch for Fernandes to read and eat before it self destructs.
These Rangnick tactcs must be very clever if he needs drawings to explain them.

70 United are now finding it easy to pass the ball around as the dogged Bees are tiring.
Ralf Rangnick sends on Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford for Greenwood and Ronaldo.
Ron doesn’t look to happy – but that might be the botox.
    Brentford 0 Man United 2
67 Jensen pays for all his missed chances but getting hooked for Wissa.
Thomas Frank has thrown all of his attacking options on.
And it’s not like United have suddenly tightened up – the Bees have just been so wasteful.
    Right red Fred
The in-form United midfielder has been involved in four goals in his last seven Premier League games (1 goal, 3 assist).
That’s as many as he had in his first 86 appearances in the competition (3 goals, 1 assist).
He used to be the butt of many good jokes too.
    Brentford 0 Man United 2
63 Fernandes could have scored himself after his fellow Portuguese fed him sublimely.
But he rollde the ball across to the young Englishman to finish.
Brentford make two subs, Canos and Janelt off for Baptiste and Henry.
    Brentford 0 Man United 2
62 Greenwood scores after a Ronaldo chess allows Fernandes to tee up the scorer.
    Totally ruthless.
    Technically brilliant.
    Game over.

60 Lindelof blocks a promising Brentford attack and it feels like the home side’s chance has slipped away.
Brentford work so hard that they are bound to tire in the latter stages.
And United still have a few big-money subs they can bring on to stretch the game.
    Brentford 0 Man United 1
57 McTominay fires one from range that skids off the floor and Lossl has to parry away for a corner.
Brentford might be deflated after conceding after so many missed chances.
It always felt like they would be punished for fluffing so many opportunities.
    Brentford 0 Man United 1
55 Anthony Elanga scores after United are allowed to string a dozen passes together.
Fred carves Brentford open with a beautiful pass and the youngster gets two touches to finish.
He lobs it up and heads it home – his first ever senior goal for the club.
