    Report
Lawrence Okolie held on to his WBO cruiserweight world title after winning  a hugging match with Polish limpet Michal Chieslak.
With A-lister pals Anthony Joshua and UFC icon Israel Adasenya walking him to the ring, fans hoped for a Hollywood showing from the 29-year-old Hackney ace.
But – after Cieslak was pinged by the first serious punch of the O2 bout, slashing a wound into his left cheek – he spent the next 11 rounds grabbing and wrestling to a unanimous decision loss.
After Chieslak was dropped in the fifth, he judges called it: 117-110, 116-111 and 115-112.

Biggest fight in the cruiserweight division but I wonder what Briedis thinks after watching that?
Probably gutted it wasn’t Jake Paul in there.

Judges score the bout: 117-110, 116-111, 115-112… winner by unanimous decision, Lawrence Okolie.
Have to say, a lot tighter than I had it. But glad it’s done and dusted.
Okolie’s pursuit of unifications still alive.

    Okolie vs Cieslak
Not one to remember for Okolie, despite winning arguably every round and scoring a knockdown.
Both were guilty of holding which led to a scrappy and largely unpleasant fight.
But Okolie well on the way to retaining his title, only another horror show like yesterday will guarantee otherwise.

Round 12 – Cieslak walks into a right hand and is left shaken but steady on his feet.
Okolie comes forward with a right hand but Cieslak looks to hold, no point switching up the game plan now.
The champ is bundled to the floor, no knockdown scored but the Polish crowd are getting very animated.
Fight sparks into life towards the end, with both throwing with intention but it goes the distance… scorecards next.

Round 11 – Another warning from the ref as the pace of the fight has slowed again, causing more holding.
They trade scrappy shots on the inside, sparking a mass reaction from the surprisingly Polish-packed crowd.
We head into the 12th and final round with Okolie well in front but failing to inspire.

Round 10 – Big right hand lands for Okolie, pushing Cieslak into the ropes.

Round 9 – Okolie boxing smoother this round, pot-shotting with a few right hands, making Cieslak miss in return.
The champion works on the back foot, changing his style for the first time in the fight.
Okolie leaps in with a left hook but looks to have been met with a sharp counter but nothing to bother the Brit.

Round 8 – Slashing left for Cieslak sends Okolie backwards but not clear if it landed or not.
Okolie soon backs Cieslak to the ropes but nothing comes of it.
The two come together and again they are told off by the ref. Signs of frustration in both fighters here.

Round 7 – Both try with big rear counters but nothing landing. Cieslak marches forward but ships an Okolie right hand over the top.
Sweeping left hook lands for Okolie but again it ends up in a clinch.
Again it’s all arms in close and after seven round it’s safe to say their styles haven’t gelled.

Round 6 – Early right hands lands for Okolie and Cieslak is on his bike.
Fight turns scrappy again and the pair are given a telling off for the holding.

Round 5 – Big one-two lands for Okolie but Cieslak holds and they end up hugging in the corner.
Massive one-two and Cieslak is floored! Massive shot by Okolie.
Okolie lands two more big right hands, the first shakes Cieslak’s legs but the Pole survives the round, conceding it 10-8.

Round 4 – Okolie looking to land to the body with Cieslak covering up. But the Pole starts to push the champ back.
Clear Okolie is looking to land over the top but Cieslak is smart and covering up, will take a good combination or counter to open him up.
Another round in the bank for Okolie but shows signs of frustration towards the end, continuing to come forward even after the bell sounded.

Round 3 – Cieslak comes forward with a big shot but Okolie takes it well and they clinch, again.
Fight starting to break out now with the pair both throwing with intentions, only to then hold.
Right hook to the body lands for Okolie, then followed up soon after to the head. Good end to the round for the Londoner.

Round 1 – Bell rings and the pair both rush into each other and they clinch. Let’s not hope that’s a sign of things to come.
MASSIVE RIGHT HAND LANDS FOR OKOLIE!
Somehow Cieslak still standing! Big clubbing right hook landed for Okolie and Cieslak looked out on his feet but survives the round.
    All-star cast
Lawrence Okolie walks into the ring accompanied by heavyweight superstar Anthony Joshua and UFC champ Israel Adesanya.

    Gal scored
Here is Galal Yafai’s reaction to his dominant debut win, which ended in round five.

    Up next
Main event time as Lawrence Okolie defends his WBO cruiserweight title against Michal Cieslak.
The Pole has only lost once in 23 fights, against WBC champion Ilunga Makabu.
Okolie is dreaming of unification bouts, but first has to get Cieslak out of the way.

Yafai wins pro debut in fifth round.
Yafai said: “I enjoyed it in there, he was a tough opponent, I caught him with big shots and he wouldn’t go.
“I have waited so long to make my pro debut and it was everything I hoped and dreamed of.
“I want to move at a fast pace, I want to be stepped up and become a world champion.”

    Yafai wins pro debut
Here is the finishing sequence for Yafai, as a left hand dropped Bautista and signalled the end.
The ref actually missed the towel come in and it was Yafai who had to tell him Bautista’s corner wanted it stopped.
Big statement for the Tokyo Olympic gold winner.

    Yafai vs Bautista
Round 5 – The pair trade leather in mid-range but it’s Yafai landing the more telling and cleaner shots.
Yafai landing to head and body, leaving Bautista looking worse for wear, his right eye seriously swelling.
Straight left hand lands to drop Bautista… and his team throw in the towel! Debut win for Yafai, inside the half way mark.

    Yafai vs Bautista
Round 4 – Tempo has slightly slowed bu Yafai’s pressure is constant, edging forward with his feet and lead hand.
He smashes in a couple of body shots and Bautista is starting to look out of ideas.
Yafai lets his hands go and leaves Bautista on the retreat – the ref is having a close look here… but the Mexican survives and it’s into round five.

    That’s all from Wembley Stadium
And the end of our League Cup Final coverage.
Chelsea more than played their part in a thrilling, frantic match, but one wayward kick has ensured that Liverpool are record winners of the competition for a ninth time.
The talk in the build-up was all about goalkeeper with Jurgen Klopp favouring inexperienced Caoimhin Kelleher over Alisson, while Thomas Tuchel recalled his number one, Edouard Mendy, for the big occasion.
And the post-match chat will be about goalkeepers too as Kelleher defied his years to remain cool from the spot when it mattered. In contrast, Chelsea’s decision to switch their stoppers for penalties backfired.
It will soon be back to other matters considered more important such as Liverpool’s Premier League title challenge, and Chelsea’s Champions League defence, but today was all about the League Cup – and the day belongs to Liverpool. Goodnight.
    Extra! Read all about it!
Before we call time on an extraordinary day of cup final football, let’s take a recap on all that went down (and up, if we’re talking about Kepa’s penalty) at Wembley. Here’s Charlie Wyatt’s match report, hot off the press.
We had a truly classic finish with one of the greatest penalty shoots-out the new stadium has seen. And in the end, Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, the penalty king introduced to save the day, hit a terrible penalty to hand Liverpool their first domestic Cup for 10 years. It was breathless stuff.
    Top ten for victorious Klopp
Not only did Jurgen Klopp become the first German manager to win the English League Cup, he also made it ten trophies in his coaching career.
    An elite football manager.

    King Kelleher on the wall
Caoimhin Kelleher was the unlikely hero for Liverpool as they claimed the League Cup for a record ninth time.
The Reds’ back-up stopper made some fine saves during the 120 minutes and then played a pivotal part in the penalty shootout – just not in the way he would have expected.
After the first 20 kicks had been scored, attention turned to the two goalkeepers. The young Irishman struck first, putting his penalty away brilliantly, before watching on as his opposite number struck his into orbit.
It’s a mad one! Jurgen said ‘there’s a wall with all the Liverpool goalkeepers who have won cups so now you can go on that!'” Caoimhin KelleherSky Sports

    Ecstatic Reds take the trophy
The celebrations continue. A late switch means that the trophy lift will take place in the stands rather than on the pitch so Liverpool’s victorious players ascend the stairs like to so many have done them.
As captain, Jordan Henderson is the one who lifts the trophy, but such is the togetherness in this Liverpool squad that they all join in – even the unused substitutes, and those not included in the matchday squad.

    Redknapp slams Kepa penalty switch
Jamie Redknapp has put the boot into Chelsea’s decision to bring Kepa Arrizabalaga on for the penalty shootout – almost with as much force as the Spaniard sent his spotkick over the crossbar with.
I hope it puts to bed these substitutions of putting goalkeepers on. Edouard Mendy is one of the best goalkeepers in the world and you bring on Kepa instead of him – ridiculous! I didn’t like his behaviour when the penalties were being taken, and then he took one of the worst penalties you’ve ever seen. I don’t like it!Jamie RedknappSky Sports
    Liverpool win the League Cup!
You really couldn’t make it up.
The man brought on to save the penalties (and didn’t save a single one) has missed the vital kick to hand the cup to Liverpool.
The Chelsea players huddle around Kepa Arrizabalaga, but know that this time their tactical tweak did not work. Who knows if Edouard Mendy would have saved any of those 11 Liverpool spotkicks, but he allowed very little to beat him during 120 minutes.
At one end of Wembley, a sea of red – on the pitch and in the stands – come together to celebrate the first domestic trophy of the season.

Missed! Kepa Arrizabalaga blasts over the bar!
Liverpool win the League Cup Final!
    Chelsea 10-11 Liverpool

    Goal! Caoimhin Kelleher scores!
    What a penalty!
    Chelsea 10-11 Liverpool
    Goal! Trevoh Chalobah scores!
The defender makes it the full set for the outfield players. It’s down to the keepers.
    Chelsea 10-10 Liverpool
    Goal! Ibrahima Konate scores!
Only just! Kepa gets a hand to it, but is not strong enough to keep it out.
    Chelsea 9-10 Liverpool
    Goal! Thiago Silva scores!
On it goes! So nicely done by the Brazilian.
    Chelsea 9-9 Liverpool
    Goal! Harvey Elliott scores!
Nicely done by the teenager! Left-footed, and again Kepa dives the wrong way.
    Chelsea 8-9 Liverpool
    Goal! Timo Werner scores!
Just! The shot creeps under Kelleher’s hand!
    Chelsea 8-8 Liverpool
    Goal! Andy Robertson scores!
Low and left-footed! No chance Kepa!
    Chelsea 7-8 Liverpool
    Goal! N’Golo Kante saves
Cool and calm from Kante, sending Kelleher the wrong way.
    Chelsea 7-7 Liverpool
    Goal! Divock Origi scores!
He also opts for the middle! Kepa dives to his right.
    Chelsea 6-7 Liverpool
    Goal! Antonio Rudiger scores!
A straight run-up followed by a calm centre beyond Kelleher.
    Chelsea 6-6 Liverpool
    Goal! Diogo Jota scores!
The substitute smashes it straight down the centre. A little fortunate, perhaps, but they all count.
    Chelsea 5-6 Liverpool
    Goal! Jorginho scores!
A hop, skip, and Jorginho lifts it down the centre.
    Chelsea 5-5 Liverpool

    Goal! Mo Salah scores!
Excellent penalty! Left-footed, into the top right corner.
    Chelsea 4-5 Liverpool
    Goal! Reece James scores!
A short run up, but he slams it into the same corner as Alexander-Arnold. He puts his finger to his lips to silence Liverpool fans behind the goal.
    Chelsea 4-4 Liverpool
    Goal! Trent Alexander-Arnold scores!
No mistake! He drills it into the left corner!
    Chelsea 3-4 Liverpool
    Goal! Kai Havertz scores!
Again, the Chelsea man shuffles before he strikes, and then sends Kelleher the wrong way.
    Chelsea 3-3 Liverpool
    Goal! Virgil van Dijk scores!
Right-footed, powered into the top corner!
    Chelsea 2-3 Liverpool

    The Reds’ road to Wembley
Four clean sheets in five Carabao Cup games this season may make it seem as though it’s been plain sailing for Liverpool on their way to this year’s final.
However, they needed all their fighting spirit and belief in the quarters to rally from 2-0 and then 3-1 down to beat Leicester.
Even then, it was only an equaliser from Takumi Minamino deep into injury time and some good fortunate during the shootout that helped the Reds progress.
Jurgen Klopp’s team then saw off Arsenal in the semis, prevailing 2-0 at the Emirates after a goalless game at Anfield.

    Rival fans unite for Ukraine
They may be fierce rivals in the Premier League and Europe, but Liverpool and Chelsea fans have come together at Wembley this afternoon to show their solidarity with the people of Ukraine.
A great number of Ukraine flags are already on display inside Wembley stadium with others being dispersed outside the stadium.
Meanwhile, anti-war messages are appearing on the big screen inside the ground, again showing support for Ukraine.

    Carra slams ’embarrassing’ Chelsea
Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has criticised Chelsea and Roman Abramovich for the statements both have issued in the 24 hours leading up to today’s League Cup Final.
The escalating events in Ukraine continue to overshadow sporting events, and have had a knock-on effect on one finalist, given the links between Abramovich and Vladimir Putin.
Abramovich issued a confusing and concerning statement last night relinquishing control of the club to its trustees, but made no comment regarding Russia’s invasion.
Hoping to smooth matters, Chelsea followed up this afternoon with a short statement condemning the war in Ukraine.
I think that the couple of statements they’ve put out – I think it’s been really poor. The club were trying to rectify what Roman Abramovich put out the night before, and I don’t think they did that well either, really. So it’s not worked out well for them at all. I think they’ve embarrassed themselves.”Jamie Carragher
    How Chelsea made the final
Today’s final will go to extra-time and even penalties if necessary, but that shouldn’t be a worry to Thomas Tuchel.
The German has already watched his side succeed on spotkicks twice in the competition this season, defeating both Aston Villa and Southampton at Stamford Bridge after 1-1 draws inside 90 minutes.
Chelsea were much more assured by the time they faced clubs from capital, beating both Brentford in the quarter-final and Spurs in the semi-final without conceding a goal.

    James back on Blues bench
    1 Kepa, 5 Jorginho, 9 Lukaku, 11 Werner, 12 Loftus-Cheek, 17 Saul, 20 Hudson-Odoi, 24 James, 31 Sarr
Mendy starts for Chelsea; No Lukaku
    16 Mendy; 14 Chalobah, Thiago Silva, 2 Rudiger; 28 Azpilicueta, 7 Kante, 8 Kovacic, 3 Alonso; 10 Pulisic, 19 Mount; 29 Havertz

    Jota named on Liverpool bench
    1 Alisson, 5 Konate, 7 Milner, 8 Keita, 15 Oxlade-Chamberlain, 18 Minamino, 20 Jota, 21 Tsimikas, 27 Origi
Liverpool XI – Kelleher in goal
Young keeper Caoimhin Kelleher starts between the sticks for Liverpool, who make two changes in total to the team that swept Leeds aside in midweek.
Kelleher has been Jurgen Klopp’s choice for cup competitions this campaign, and the German coach keeps faith in the Irishman for the final, relegating Alisson on the bench.
Elsewhere, captain Jordan Henderson comes back into the midfield at the expense of Curtis Jones.
Diogo Jota is only considered fit enough for a place on the bench so the trio at the head of Liverpool’s 4-3-3 formation is Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Luis Diaz.
    62 Kelleher; 66 Alexander-Arnold, 32 Matip, 4 Van Dijk, 26 Robertson; 14 Henderson, 3 Fabinho, 6 Thiago; 11 Salah, 10 Mane, 23 Diaz

    Latest from the two camps
We’re expecting confirmation of the this afternoon’s starting line-ups in the next half hour, but here’s what the two clubs have told us in the build-up.
Chelsea’s only confirmed absentee is Ben Chilwell, although Thomas Tuchel faces an anxious wait to see whether Hakim Ziyech and Mateo Kovacic have recovered from the knocks they picked up in the midweek win over Lille.
There has even been a suggestion from Stamford Bridge that Reece James, out since late December, may return for a cameo at the home of football.
Roberto Firmino has definitely been ruled out for Liverpool, and fellow forward Diogo Jota is a major doubt.
Fortunately for Jurgen Klopp, Mo Salah and Sadio Mane are now back on the goalscoring trail after the time at the African Cup of Nations, while the exciting emergence of Luis Diaz can also help to fill any gaps.
    Red hot favourites for success
There’s usually little between them when these two clubs meet, but the bookies are siding with Liverpool for this afternoon’s showdown at Wembley.
Jurgen Klopp’s team can be backed at a shade of odds against to win the final in 90 minutes, while they are odds on to take home the cup by any means necessary.
    90-minute betting:

    Chelsea win 5/2
    Draw 11/5
    Liverpool win 23/20

    To life the trophy:

    Chelsea 5/4
    Liverpool 13/20

Odds from Betfair correct at the time of post publication.
    Final countdown
Jurgen Klopp has called on his Liverpool side to take their chances at Wembley.
He said: “I am realistic but very positive as well, because there’s no need for anything else.
“Qualifying for a final is not even close to winning it, but we should take a lot of confidence out of the things the boys did so far in the season or in general. Chelsea can do it as well.
“In the end, how it always is, it’s about who gets the momentum in the decisive situations, who can finish their situations off better, who can defend the opponent in the best possible way, so who can cut off most things of the strengths of the other team?
“That’s obviously a constant battle during the game.
“But it is nice, you will never play a final – it never happened to me, at least – against a ‘weaker’ side, you just face top-class teams, world-class teams and that is the case here as well.”
    Ace up his sleeve
Thomas Tuchel has called on Chelsea to draw inspiration from Rafael Nadal’s Australian Open final victory over Daniil Medvedev as they battle the odds against Liverpool.
The Spaniards was two sets down before coming back to lift the trophy in Melbourne.
And Tuchel said: “But look what it takes to come to a final.
“If you have a tennis grand slam final like the last one between [Rafael] Nadal and [Daniil] Medvedev, who is the guy to raise the hand and say Medvedev is a loser after five-and-a-half hours of tennis out of this world.
“So we are very quick in judging and we are very quick in saying what he has to learn.
“Maybe he just also learns that he is on the level and he had everything it takes, and at some point, you need a bit of luck.
“You need to accept that okay, we left it all out there. And this is what we will do again.”
    Chelsea on Ukraine
Chelsea released a brief statement on the war in Ukraine.
The club posted: “The situation in Ukraine is horrific and devastating. Chelsea FC’s thoughts are with everyone in Ukraine. Everyone at the club is praying for peace.”
Roman Abramovich has not criticised Putin directly for the war, but his daughter did make a very critical post on social media about the Russian leader’s decision to invade Ukraine.
Time to head down Wembley Way
Good afternoon and welcome to Wembley for live SunSport coverage of this season’s League Cup Final between Chelsea and Liverpool.
The match marks the first time in five years that a new name will be on the trophy.
Man City have won the competition in each of the past four seasons.
But Pep Guardiola’s men were beaten on penalties by West Ham earlier in the competition.
Chelsea have more recent pedigree in this competition, having beaten Tottenham to win it in 2015.
Liverpool have to go back to 2012 for their last success in the League Cup, when they beat Cardiff City on penalties.
But the Reds have looked the more promising team this season and sit just six points behind Man City in the Premier League with a game in hand.
Chelsea are ten points further back in the table than the Reds, but have played a game less.
And the Blues have already lifted a trophy this season, taking home the Club World Cup as they beat Brazilian side Palmeiras.
But this match may be overshadowed by events in Ukraine and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich’s decision to relinquish control of the club.

    Go for Diogo
Danny Murphy has tipped Liverpool to overcome Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final today.
And former Anfield midfielder believes Diogo Jota could make Jurgen Klopp’s starting eleven with Roberto Firmino ruled out of action.
Murphy told Sky Sports:  “I think it will depend on Jota’s fitness. If Jota is fit, I think he will start with (Sadio) Mane and (Mohamed) Salah, with Luis Diaz coming off the bench.
“It’s good that they’ve got options now and they’re not so reliant on the normal front three of Firmino, Mane and Salah as they have been in previous season.
“I think we’ve seen with both Liverpool and Chelsea over the past few months just how important the substitutions can be.
“It’s not just about the first eleven, you’ve now got quality on both benches, that can come off the bench and win games of football with 20 minutes to go.”
    Big Sam’s the man
Leeds United are being urged to bring Sam Allardyce in as a replacement for Marcelo Bielsa.
The club dropped the axe on the Argentinian’s Elland Road reign after four years in charge.
Richard Keys reckon Allardyce could help turnaround Leeds’ recent run of poor results.
However Red Bull Salzburg gaffer Jesse Marsch has been linked with the post.
Keys told beIN Sports: “I would be on the phone to Sam Allardyce as we speak and say we only have one objective… Just get us safe!”
    Yarmo concern
West Ham have given Andriy Yarmolenko time off playing duties due to conflict in Ukraine.
David Moyes says Russia’s attack inside on player’s homeland has had a considerable effect on him.
The 32-year-old was born in Russia to Ukrainian parents who returned to the country when the player was three.
Moyes said: “He’s not in a really good position, I’ve got to say. We’ve given him a few days off and it’s totally understandable.
“The club have been very good, asked me to speak with him and if there’s anything we can do for him, we’ll certainly help him.
“He’s asked me just now if he can have a few days off and I’ve granted him that. It’s a real difficult time for him and his family, and we respect that.”
    ‘No respect’
Gary Neville reckons Leeds have been showing little respect for some of their opponents on the pitch.
The Man United hero was reacting to the news of the club sacking of Marcelo Bielsa from his manager’s role.
The announcement came a day after the club’s 4-0 loss to Tottenham on Saturday.
Neville told Sky Sports Super Sunday: “We know that Marcelo Bielsa had his values and principles, which we know he’s not going to change, and that has ultimately cost him.
“But there didn’t seem to be a lot of respect on the pitch for the opposition players and just chance after chance, goal after goal against your goalkeeper.
“But it is a bit of sadness because Leeds were exciting to watch.”
    Rodri handball
The Premier League have explained why VAR decided not to given Everton a penalty against Manchester City.
Toffees boss Frank Lampard was infuriated are his side were denied a spot-kick after a handball by Man City midfielder Rodri.
The Everton manager raged that his three-year-old daughter could see it was a handball.
However acting VAR for the game Chris Kavanagh stuck with Paul Tierney’s on-field decision not to penalise Rodri.
And following the game the Premier League explained the decision stood because there was ‘not clear enough evidence to show conclusively that it was handball’.
    All in for Erling
Manchester City are reportedly leading the chase for Erling Haaland’s signature.
German news outlet Bild claims the Borussia Dortmund is open to the idea of a Premier League move.
This is despite reports of the striker being heavily linked with a move to Spain and Real Madrid.
Pep Guardiola is thought to be keen on signing the forward who has scored 23 goals in 20 games this term.
And the player has a £63million release clause which becomes active next summer.
    Not slick for City
Virgil van Dijk reckons Manchester City will feel ‘uncomfortable’ at the top of the Prem with their title rivals eager to chase them down.
The Liverpool centre-back and his team-mates hope to derail City’s bid to win a fourth Premier League title in five terms.
Pep Guardiola’s side bounced back from a surprise loss to Tottenham to beat Everton on Saturday.
And they currently have a six-point lead on Liverpool who have a game in hand and face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final later.
Van Dijk, 30, told the Daily Mail: “A couple of years ago, we were in the hotseat where we were a few points in front and it was tough and we gave it away.
“It is not a very comfortable place to be. It is not easy to deal with the pressure but City have proven they can because they are unbelievable.”
    Goodbye Bielsa
Marcelo Bielsa has been fired as Leeds manager after a poor run of Premier League results for the Elland Road side.
SunSport says the club plan to announce a new boss for the side tomorrow.
Bielsa, 66, has spent four years at Leeds leading them to promotion to the Prem from the Championship.
But the club have struggled to progress this season losing four of their last five top tier games.
And they were trounced 4-0 by Tottenham on Saturday.
    Conte see him staying
Rio Ferdinand reckons the chances of Antonio Conte remaining Tottenham’s boss next season are slim.
The Italy-born coach had been heavily linked with the Manchester United manager’s role earlier this season.
Despite Spurs’ 4-0 thrashing of Leeds Ferdinand believes Conte could part company with the club.
The former England centre-back told BT Sport: “I don’t think he’ll be here after the summer, based on what I’ve seen in the media this last week, based on the players he’s disposed of.
“I think he’ll be comfortable going ‘listen, I didn’t realise it was going to be that bad’ and he will feel no worry about walking away.
“He’s not someone who’ll look back and regret that, he’ll be confident in his decision and I’d be very surprised if he’ll be here next year.”
    Chelsea comment on Ukraine
Chelsea have released a fresh statement in response to the conflict in Ukraine calling the situation ‘horrific’.
Their remarks come hours after Roman Abramovich announced he was stepping back from his role at the club.
However the Blues owner did not mention the war in Ukraine.
Chelsea’s statement read: “The situation in Ukraine is horrific and devastating.
“Chelsea FC’s thoughts are with everyone in Ukraine. Everyone at the club is praying for peace.”
    ‘Happy man’ Eriksen
Christian Eriksen has been reflecting on his ‘wonderful’ football comeback after being told he would never play again.
The former Tottenham playmaker suffered a cardiac arrest whilst playing for Denmark at the 2020 Euros and was later let go by his old club Inter Milan.
But Eriksen, who has a defibrillator in his chest to prevent further issues, is now back in the Prem playing for Brentford.
And he made his first competitive return in the club’s 2-0 home loss to Newcastle on Saturday.
Eriksen said: “Take away the result and I am one happy man.
“To have been through what I’ve been through, with my family, to be back here is a wonderful and I’m just happy that it’s happened.”
    Morgan miffed
Piers Morgan has blasted Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich after he handed control of the Blues to its trustees following Russia’s invasion of the Ukraine.
Abramovich, 55, relinquished his power over the club on Saturday night with TV firebrand Morgan describing the move as “self-serving”.
The TalkTV presenter, 56, said: “Very simple question for Abramovich: do you support the war or not?
“If he does, or won’t say, he should be barred from owning any UK football club or business.
“Weasel words. Where is the condemnation of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine?”
    Good morning football fans
Roman Abramovich has sensationally given up control of Chelsea after Russia invaded Ukraine.
The Blues owner – who bought the club in July 2003 – released an incredible statement on their website tonight.
It comes on the eve of the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool at Wembley tomorrow afternoon.
The six new rulers of the Stamford Bridge club are chairman Bruce Buck, Blues’ women’s boss Emma Hayes, head of the National Lottery Sir Hugh Robertson and Piara Powar.
Lawyer John Devine and Paul Ramos, director of finance, make up the six new trustees.
    Bye Bielsa
Marcelo Bielsa has sensationally quit as Leeds boss after a shocking run of results.
The 66-year-old Argentine has spent four years at Elland Road, getting them promoted from the Championship.
He has struggled to help them kick-on this season, following a series of worrying performances.
They lost 4-0 at home to Tottenham on Saturday lunchtime, in another miserable display.
It left them having gained just one point from a possible 18 over the previous six matches.
The Yorkshire side are looking to bring in former RB Leipzig boss Jesse Marsch as his replacement.
It is understood the finalisation of Bielsa’s exit is currently being thrashed out between lawyers.
And according to Fabrizio Romano, 48-year-old American coach Marsch is hot favourite to take over.

    Roman still reigns
Roman Abramovich reportedly remains Chelsea’s owner despite his bombshell statement that he has handed over the stewardship of the club.
The Russian billionaire announced the shock news on Saturday night following his country’s invasion of Ukraine.
A number of Russian oligarchs have had their assets frozen by the British government due to events in Ukraine, though Abramovich has not been sanctioned.
Abramovich, who bought the West London outfit in 2003, has stated that he has passed control of the Blues to their six trustees.
His announcement, which didn’t mention Ukraine, comes on the eve of Chelsea’s Carabao Cup final against Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday.
Those now overseeing the Champions League holders are chairman Bruce Buck, Women’s boss Emma Hayes, head of the National Lottery Sir Hugh Robertson, equality campaigner Piara Powar, lawyer John Devine and director of finance Paul Ramos.

    Magic Tuch
Jurgen Klopp, 54, and Thomas Tuchel, 48, will do battle in what is somewhat-crudely being dubbed ‘Master vs Apprentice’ in the League Cup final.
The two have played against each other 17 times dating back to their time together in Germany, with Klopp winning NINE of their 17 encounters, losing three times.
Most-recently, Klopp’s Liverpool faced Tuchel’s Chelsea in a thrilling 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge at the beginning of January.
Klopp has taken charge of nearly TWICE as many matches as a football manager too, with 945 games under his belt to Tuchel’s 524.
Tuchel boasts the better win record at 57 per cent to 53.4 per cent – however, his stint at PSG (74.8 per cent) somewhat boosted his stats.
And the Chelsea boss is beginning to overtake Klopp in other areas too.
He equalled his compatriot’s one Champions League title by winning the competition last season.
And he followed that up with success in the Super Cup and Club World Cup which means he has now overtaken Klopp’s trophy count, with 10 to nine.
Klopp has won three Big Five league titles with one Premier League crown and two Bundesliga titles, while Tuchel has won just two (both Ligue 1).
All that goes out the window tonight though as the two go head-to-head knowing anything could happen in a final.
But who will come out on top? The ‘Master’ or the ‘Apprentice’?

Inside Chelsea’s six trustees in charge
Here’s our look at a dramatically-different power centre for the Blues – including chairman Bruce Buck and women’s team manager Emma Hayes.
Russian billionaire Abramovich handed over ‘stewardship and care’ due to Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
New Yorker Buck has been a Chelsea fan since 1983, while Hayes has bossed the Blues’ women to the Double during her ten-year reign.
John Devis is Head of the Sports Team at law firm Muckle LLP and equality campaigner Piara Powar used to be Chief Executive of Kick It Out.
Hayes has been Chelsea women’s manager since 2012, she won the FA Cup and Super League double three years later.
John Devine is a partner in the Sports Team at law firm Muckle LLP, he works with a huge range of sports and governing bodies.
Piara Powar is an executive director of anti-discrimination and social inclusion network FARE, he is also the former Chief Executive of Kick It Out.
Paul Ramos is Chelsea’s financial supremo has been with the club since September 2001.
Sir Hugh Robertson perhaps is the best-known of the six – although not for football reasons.
Sir Hugh is the vice-chair of the British Olympic Association and former Conservative Minister for both Sport and of the Olympics, notably overseeing London 2012.
He joined the Blues’ Board of Trustees in 2016.
    Rushing Roman
Roman Abramovich’s statement passing over stewardship of Chelsea was just 110 words.
The Russian billionaire dropped his bombshell announcement on Saturday evening, days after his home country’s invasion of Ukraine.
He passed control and running of the West London football club to their six trustees.
They are chairman Bruce Buck, Blues’ women’s boss Emma Hayes, head of the National Lottery Sir Hugh Robertson, equality campaigner Piara Powar, lawyer John Devine and director of finance Paul Ramos.
But despite the major shift at Stamford Bridge, the wording was condensed to just five brief sentences.
The Abramovich message said: “During my nearly 20-year ownership of Chelsea FC, I have always viewed my role as a custodian of the Club, whose job it is ensuring that we are as successful as we can be today, as well as build for the future, while also playing a positive role in our communities.
“I have always taken decisions with the Club’s best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values.
“That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable Foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC.
“I believe that currently they are in the best position to look after the interests of the Club, players, staff, and fans.”

    Feeling Blues
Chelsea fans have reacted to the news that long-time owner Roman Abramovich is giving up control of the club.
The Blues’ Russian owner – who bought the west London outfit in July 2003 – released an incredible statement on the side’s website on Saturday night.
It comes amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine – which the UK government have responded to by freezing the assets of some Russian oligarchs.
Abramovich has not yet been sanctioned.
Some Chelsea supporters are concerned by Abramovich’s sudden departure.
One fan said: “Don’t sell Roman we love you.”
While another added: “Roman Abramovich is the best owner in club football.”

    Ro-go
Chelsea fans reacted with shock at the news, and are confused if it means he has fully stepped away.
Abramovich remains the club’s owner and can still invest money into the club.
The decision is understood to be an attempt to distance the club from the controversy surround him.
Earlier this week Labour MP Chris Bryant stated Russian billionaire Abramovich should be barred from owning the club.
There were concerns over his links to “corrupt activity and practices”.
There was no mention of the war in Ukraine in the statement.

    New Blues
Roman Abramovich’s shock Chelsea departure leaves six trustees in charge.
Here’s our look at a dramatically-different power centre for the Blues – including chairman Bruce Buck and women’s team manager Emma Hayes.
Russian billionaire Abramovich handed over ‘stewardship and care’ due to Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.
And that thrusts these half-dozen figures into the limelight – ahead of Sunday’s Carabao Cup final with Liverpool.
New Yorker Buck has been a Chelsea fan since 1983, while Hayes has bossed the Blues’ women to the Double during her six-year reign.
John Devis is Head of the Sports Team at law firm Muckle LLP and equality campaigner Piara Powar used to be Chief Executive of Kick It Out
Completing the six are Chelsea’s Director of Finance Paul Ramos and lifelong Blues’ fan Sir Hugh Robertson, vice-chairman of the British Olympic Association.

    Crissed off
Cristiano Ronaldo’s Manchester United plight was summed up as he turned into a statue to somehow block a Bruno Fernandes’ shot.
Ron stopped bolt upright in the middle of the penalty box in a 0-0 home draw with Watford – grinding to a halt like United’s progress in the Prem.
Fernandes’ angled effort cannoned away off his Portugal team-mate, who even remained reluctant to move afterwards.
Ronaldo then looked exasperated at the final whistle as the Red Devils were booed off following their latest wasteful stalemate.
But the only time United got the ball in the net from 22 shots was a Ronaldo ‘goal’ ruled out for offside.
And ironically, it was the the 37-year-old who had a goal-bound shot blocked by United teenanger Anthony Elanga.
It was Ronaldo too who struck a post from arguably the Red Devils’ best chance.

    Taking the Mik
Arsenal are facing another defensive dilemma with full-backs Kieran Tierney and Takehiro Tomiyasu both struggling with injury.
Japanese international Tomiyasu has suffered a second calf strain after missing his team’s last four games.
And Tierney pulled up clutching his thigh in the final minutes of Thursday’s 2-1 win over Wolves and had to be replaced by Nuno Tavares with the game still in the balance.
Now Arteta is sweating on both players being fit for his team’s next game away to struggling Watford a week on Sunday.
Because the Gunners boss is rapidly running out of options, with only 17 senior players currently available and unknown youngsters such as Zak Swanson and Omari Hutchinson having to fill the subs’ bench.
Now the fear is that the smallest squad in the Premier League could run out of steam in the increasingly frantic scrap to secure a top four finish and Champions League qualification.

Flourent Malouda revealed he almost signed for Liverpool – before later joining Chelsea.
The former winger was coached by Gerard Houllier at the time and was nearly convinced by make a switch to Anfield.
Speaking exclusively to Genting Casino, Malouda said: “Gerard Houllier was my coach.
“Whenever I was training, I would always ask him questions about the Premier League and whether or not I play there.
“He said you have to go and experience the Premier League at least once in your career and then he grabbed his phone and called Liverpool – he literally made the deal for me.”
Liverpool were coached by Rafa Benitez at the time, who was keen on signing Malouda.
He revealed: “Liverpool were the first team to make an offer. Rafa was the coach and he really pushed for me to go to Liverpool.”
The Frenchman eventually joined Chelsea for £13m move in 2007.
Malouda said: “When Chelsea came in for me, I felt so much pride.
“I knew a lot of the players that were already there, and of course we would speak regularly on the phone, which helped my decision, so I knew Chelsea were the club that I really wanted to join.”

He said: “To be honest, I made the weight pretty well, I made the weight good. But it is getting harder to make that weight.
“That most likely will be my last fight at 140, but we’ll sit down with my team. I left it a little bit late to make preparations for the weight cut with injuries , so we left it a little bit late to get the weight off.

    Josh Taylor speaks
Asked if he believes he won, Taylor says: “Yeah 100 or cent. Thought I started a little slow, bit once I got into my rhythm and timing and started catching him with the bigger shots.

“He caught me with a couple of good shots, I’m not going to lie. It wasn’t my best performance, I put a lot of pressure on myself this couple of weeks, it being my homecoming, first time in three years, first time since lockdown back at home.
“I put a lot of pressure on myself, being the heavy favourite and it showed in the first half of the fight.
“But once I got in my rhythm, I started catching him with the bigger shots. It wasn’t my best performance but I believe I got the win 100 per cent. But Jack did very well.”

    Taylor vs Catterall
Here is how the two compare as they are introduced by Top Rank’s rather excited MC.

    Taylor vs Catterall
Scotland’s undisputed king now makes his way to the ring and is given a hero’s welcome.
This is likely his last fight at the 140lb super-lightweight limit but he first defends all four belts for the first time.
Arguably Britain’s best fighter right now is braced for his return.
    Taylor vs Catterall
Here comes the challenger, 26-0 unbeaten Jack Catterall, who is met with a chorus of boos as he walks into the ring.
Josh Taylor has insisted time and time again that Catterall will not be able to withstand his talent.
But we’ve seen stranger things in the ring…
    Can’t they weight?
It got a bit tasty at the weigh in yesterday between the two headliners.
They almost came to blows after Jack Catterall grabbed Josh Taylor by the throat, sparking a bit of argy bargy.
Nonetheless, they will settle it in the ring and it’s coming up next.

Brook admits Khan holds the aces
He says: “It’s all new, I am just enjoying my moment.
“In the contract Amir is still entited to a rematch but after that one-sided beating people might not want to see it.
“I am a fighter but contractually it is down to him.
“I will speak with my family and see what they say.”
    Kell Brook babie!
The welterweight ace who slayed Amir Khan last week speaks to Sky Sports after watching a highlight rerun.
“It keeps getting better,” he says. “I am on cloud nine, everyone was so impressed with the performance, it was immense.
“It’s a huge weight off my shoulders because it was talked about for years. But I kept composed and put on an amazing performance.
“I feel like a superstar, it was a long-time coming.”
    Ram-Rod
Ramirez will be pushed toward a featherweight world title inside a year and there are Brits in and around those titles.
Josh Warrington, Mick Conlan and Leigh Wood are all in featherweight title fights in the coming month.
Will any of those boys want to mix with Ramirez?
    Ramirez wins TKO – R3
Donovan throws a few body shots and Ramirez tells the ref they are low blows.
Then Ramirez cracks Donovan’s ribs and he is ruined.
Victor Loughlin dives in when Donovan stops defending himself.
    Great win for Ramirez.

    BREAKING NEWS
Roman Abramovich has sensationally given up control of Chelsea amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The Blues owner – who bought the club in 2004 – released an incredible statement on their website tonight.
It comes on the eve of the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool at Wembley tomorrow afternoon.
He said: “During my nearly 20-year ownership of Chelsea FC, I have always viewed my role as a custodian of the Club, whose job it is ensuring that we are as successful as we can be today, as well as build for the future, while also playing a positive role in our communities.

    Go with the flo

    Being Frank
Cristiano Ronaldo should retire while still he’s still ‘at the top’, according to former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf.
The Manchester United striker has had an underwhelming season since making an emotional return to the club in the summer.
CR7 has scored 15 goals in 29 games in all competitions, but just nine in 22 league games.
Nevertheless the 37-year-old has previously revealed his intentions to continue playing well into his 40’s.
But Leboeuf reckons that could be a step too far.
He told ESPN: “Do you know what? I think there is a time where you have to think, ‘What do I do with my life and my career’.
“And maybe it’s time for Cristiano Ronaldo at the end of his career to wonder and have a discussion with himself, and maybe some of his family, to know what he has to do for the rest of his career, if there is a future in his career.”

    Sak em off
Paul Merson reckons star duo Bukayo Saka and Emile Smith Rowe should be sold in the summer if they refuse to sign new deals.
Merson has urged Arsenal to tie the pair down to long-term contracts as soon as possible.
Saka’s current deal expires in the summer of 2024, and the 20-year-old is reportedly a target for Liverpool and Manchester City.
Smith Rowe on the other hand is contracted up until 2026, but that’s still not enough for Merson’s liking.
And rather than let the pair run down their contracts, Merson has made the bold claim that they should be sold in the summer if they aren’t penned down long-term.
He wrote in the Daily Star: “They are top drawer and they are going to be vital to Arsenal finishing in the top four this season. But I think Arsenal should get them tied down now.
“They should be talking now about five year contracts. Get them signed, and if they don’t want to sign, then sell them in the summer.
“Don’t hang around and let them run their contracts down and let them go for next to nothing. Test the water because there will be teams chasing them.”

    Something is Ron
Cristiano Ronaldo was left kicking the net in anger after missing a sitter during Manchester United’s clash with Watford.
On the hour mark, the Portuguese superstar found himself eight yards out with the goal at his mercy, but failed to convert the gilt-edged opportunity.
And he was reduced to whacking the net in frustration as he spurned the chance to break the deadlock.
Football fans on social media were gobsmacked by Ronaldo’s wastefulness as they slammed him for the miss.
Speaking during the game, one person said: “So many chances wasted already. Never seen Ronaldo miss so many.”
While another added: “I guess Ronaldo will first have to miss 100 clear chances before someone of authority realises he’s a problem.”

    Angel Delight
Arsenal are reportedly in competition with rivals Tottenham in the race to bring RB Leipzig full-back Angelino back to the Premier League.
The 25-year-old has been earning rave reviews in the Bundesliga since arriving on an initial loan deal from Manchester City in January 2020.
His loan at the Red Bull Arena was extended until the end of the 20-21 campaign having established himself as a key player under then-boss Julian Nagelsmann.
Leipzig then turned his temporary stay into a permanent switch in February 2021 in a bargain £15.8million deal.
Though the Citizens do have a buy-back clause for around £35m.
However they are unlikely to bring him back to the Etihad for a third time due to the dazzling displays from Joao Cancelo.
But North London giants Arsenal and Spurs are claimed to be eyeing up a summer swoop for the Spain youth international.
According to Calciomercato, the two teams are keen on the defender following his standout performances this term.

    Sal or nothing
William Saliba will reportedly be rewarded with a new long-term contract at Arsenal following his impressive loan spell at Marseille.
The 20-year-old, who joined the Gunners from Saint-Etienne in 2019 for £27million, is tied down at the Emirates until 2024.
Saliba is yet to feature for the North London outfit, with the Frenchman currently on his third loan spell away from the club.
His future in England has been in question, with Real Madrid claimed to be eyeing up a move for the centre-back in the summer.
But Arsenal are understood to be desperate to keep hold of the youngster with Mikel Arteta looking to integrate him back into his team.
And according to French news outlet ButFootball, Arsenal are set to open contract talks with Saliba about extending his stay.
It has been stated that Arteta has been left convinced that the defender has a part to play in his side after starring at Marseille.
Though the report adds that should the club and player fail to agree terms over a new deal, Arsenal would consider selling Saliba.

    Wij-n or lose
PSG midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum could be set for a return to the Premier League, according to reports.
Aston Villa and Newcastle have both been linked with a move for the former Liverpool man as he continues to struggle in France.
According to Calciomercato, Villa and Newcastle are interested in bringing the Dutchman in.
But they face stiff competition from fellow Premier League rivals West Ham if they are to secure his signature.
And LaLiga champions Atletico Madrid are also thought to be keen on the Holland international.
    Klopp vs Tuchel
Liverpool face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday.
And in what could be a tense affair, it could all come down to which manager gets their tactics right.
Jurgen Klopp, 54, and Thomas Tuchel, 48, will do battle in what is somewhat-crudely being dubbed ‘Master vs Apprentice’.

    Kant have him
PSG are reportedly keen on a summer transfer for N’Golo Kante.
The Chelsea man has been in stunning form again for the Blues this campaign after helping them win the Champions League last summer.
Kante’s contract expires at the end of next season, with PSG ‘chalking off the years’ from his deal, according to The Telegraph.
And were Kante not to pen an extension at Stamford Bridge, the club may be forced into a sale this summer to receive maximum profit.
There are just two transfer windows left to play out before the Frenchman can leave for free.
    Nice touch from Toffees
Everton are set to ditch their usual pre-match routine against Manchester City out of respect for Ukrainian players on both teams.
The Toffees usually play air raid sirens at Goodison Park as part of their hype music ahead of kick-off.
They were used as part of Evertonian boxer Tony Bellew’s ring walk song with a variation of Z Cars.
But it is expected the club have decided against using the sirens for this evening’s kick-off due to the need for the emergency sounds this week in Ukraine amid the invasion by Russia in a complete abandonment of the Minsk agreements.
On a similar note, Leicester City removed the song Fire by local band Kasabian as their goal music following the tragic helicopter crash which claimed the lives of five people including chairman Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha in 2018.
    Beckham jokes on Higuain
David Beckham heaped praise on Inter Miami star Gonzalo Higuain while poking fun at the striker.
The Miami owner held a press conference to preview the upcoming MLS season ahead of the opening game of the season against Chicago Fire on Saturday.
Beckham said: “Gonzalo is a great player, he’s a great professional and I think especially last year he performed.
“He has to live up to those expectations of being the figurehead of this team. He is a leader but his actions on the field also give the other players and the young players an opportunity to perform at a higher level. He has that power.
“He’s always scored goals wherever he’s played but he’s an important part of this club because his actions set the tone of our games. If Gonzalo plays well and works hard then everybody works hard.
“My relationship with him has always been good. My relationship with him will be even better if he scores more goals.”
    Toon dream
Newcastle owners Mehrdad Ghodoussi and Amanda Staveley plan to emulate the success of Prem giants Man United, Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea in the next five years.
Speaking to The Athletic, Ghodoussi said: “There is no reason why Newcastle in the next five years should not be a Man City or a Man Utd or a Liverpool or a Chelsea.”
And Staveley, also revealed she was inspired to deliver success to the Magpies’ loyal supporters after a recent visit to Man City’s Etihad stadium.
Speaking of her trip to the Prem Champions, Staveley gushed: “Just to talk to them and see their training facilities, to see what we can do.
“I was thinking, ‘God, I can’t wait for our guys to get their trophies, I can’t wait to deliver what the fans really deserve’.”
    Haz about that
Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe are BOTH being tipped to join Real Madrid this summer, with the club reportedly confident of a double swoop.
It is thought the duo could become the team’s new additions in June with Real hoping to sell Eden Hazard, according to Marca.
It is thought the sale of Eden Hazard could also help to finance swoops for the duo with Marca claiming the Belgium winger could return to Chelsea.
    Prem giants in Asensio battle
Arsenal and Liverpool are battling to sign Real Madrid star Marco Asensio on a free transfer.
Real have offered him a new deal on his existing terms, believed to be £3.7million a year, according to Spanish outlet Super Deporte.
The deal would include an additional £1.2m in bonuses and would extend Asensio’s stay at the Bernabeu for another four years.
But the winger could quit Los Blancos amid Premier League interest.
Liverpool and Arsenal would offer him £5.8m per annum – 50% more than what Real are prepared to pay.

Man Utd vs Watford LIVE: Stream, TV channel, teams news, as Ronaldo goal ruled out for offside – Premier League latest

MANCHESTER UNITED are back in Premier League action as they welcome strugglers Watford to Old Trafford. The Red Devils will be breathing a huge sigh of relief having scraped a 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid in their Champions League round of 16 first leg on Wednesday.
But they’ll be hoping for an easier ride when they host the 19th placed Hornets who come into this fixture off the back of a 4-1 pummelling courtesy of Crystal Palace.
Manchester United are unbeaten in the league since the embarrassing home defeat to Wolves at the start of the year.
But the Hornets currently hold the bragging rights because Watford got the better of the 13x Premier League winners earlier on this season.

    Kick-off time: 3pm
    UK TV channel: N/a
US TV channel and live stream: NBC Sports
Man Utd XI: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Varane, Telles; Fernandes, Matic, Fred, Pogba; Elanga, Ronaldo.
Watford XI: Foster; Ngakia, Cathcart, Samir, Kamara; Louza, Cleverley, Sissoko; Sarr, King, Dennis.

    Man Utd 0-0 Watford
    48. Wow! Anthony Elanga is quick!
The Manchester United showed a sublime turn of pace on the wing, flying past Hassane Kamara before trying to pick out a teammate in the box.
Unfortunately, Craig Cathcart was well positioned to deal with the danger but that was positive from Elanga.
Man Utd 0-0 Watford – That is a chance!
    46. The Red Devils have come flying out the blocks as they construct a move which ends up with a Cristiano Ronaldo header.
However, unlike a lot of other moments in his illustrious career, the Portuguese icon couldn’t direct his shot on target.
    Man Utd 0-0 Watford
    45. As expected, there are no substitutions to inform you about but both teams will be hoping that there can be a positive change in the score-line.
Second half – Man Utd 0-0 Watford
We are reporting live again from Old Trafford ladies and gentleman.
The final 45 is up and running!
    First 45 description through stats
As previously mentioned, the Red Devils annihilated their visitors in that first 45 minutes but what is more disappointing than not getting a goal is their tally of shots off target.
    Nine out of ten!
The attackers need to get their shooting boots on and fast.

    Rundown of the opening half
How Manchester United are not ahead in this game is beyond me.
The Red Devils have been in complete control since the opening whistle but they just couldn’t take the lead.
They did have the ball in the back of the net through Cristiano Ronaldo, however, the Portuguese icon couldn’t hold his run which is so unlike him.
Ralf Rangnick will be urging his players to keep up the momentum because a goal will come, but you get the feeling that the longer it takes, the more nervy Old Trafford will start to feel.
Looking forward to the second half.
    Nothing to separate the sides
All square as we enter the half-way stage of the match.

Half time – Man Utd 0-0 Watford
Manchester United have completely dominated that first 45 and had they have been more clinical in front of goal, the Red Devils would have been out of sight.
The real question is, how long can Watford sustain this amount of pressure for?
    Man Utd 0-0 Watford
45+1. The Hornets are camped in their half at the moment and not allowing any room for the Red Devils to cause a threat.
Roy Hodgson’s game plan has been executed to perfection so far.
One minute of stoppage time has been added
    Man Utd 0-0 Watford
    41. Spot on from the referee.
Replays have showed that Craig Cathcart got good contact on the ball before Anthony Elanga went toppling over.
No penalty was the right decision.
Man Utd 0-0 Watford – Penalty appeal!
    40. Craig Cathcart seemed to have caught Anthony Elanga in the box which left the Manchester United youngster in a heap.
The crowd are going wild because Kevin Friend has waved play on but VAR will have a quick check.
Man Utd 0-0 Watford – OOO so close!
    36. To the surprise of the Watford wall, Alex Telles was the nominated free-kick taker and his effort was inches from rustling in the back of the net.
    Man Utd 0-0 Watford
    36. Free-kick time!
Paul Pogba has just won a set-piece about 25-yards-out, slightly to the right of the goal.
However, Cristiano Ronaldo has stepped away from it. I repeat, Cristiano Ronaldo has stepped away from it.
    Man Utd 0-0 Watford
    35. Ten minuts plus stoppage time to go until the interval and if it stays like this, Roy Hodgson will be a happy man.
As for Ralf Rangnick, he’ll be satisfied that United are dominating but the Red Devils boss will be frustrated that his side are not out of sight.
    Man Utd 0-0 Watford
    33. Fernandes steps up and…
Moussa Sissoko puts his body on the line before getting it clear so the Hornets survive for now.
    Man Utd 0-0 Watford
    32. This could be interesting.
Emmanuel Dennis has recklessly fouled Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the right hand side of the box which is perfect for a Bruno Fernandes delivery.
Will United finally get the breakthrough?
    He’s beginning to bru up
Bruno Fernandes has missed multiple chances this half and it is starting to frustrate the Portuguese international.

Man Utd 0-0 Watford – Another chance squandered!
    25. Paul Pogba’s deflected pass managed to find its way through to Cristano Ronaldo.
But an oncoming Ben Foster forced the Portuguese international to push it widely round him.
Ronaldo thought about the shot from an incredibly tight angle, however, he opted to cross the ball to the back-post instead.
And Bruno Fernandes who was in acres of space, was unable to keep his header on target.
    Man Utd 0-0 Watford
    23. Manchester United have lost their way a little bit after such a bright start to the game.
Credit to Watford who have somehow got through the first 20 minutes unscathed.
    Man Utd 0-0 Watford
    22. The Hornets are finally beginning to build up some momentum as to the delight of Roy Hodgson.
But the more they go forward, the easier it will be for United to pick them off at the back.
It’s a real dilemma at the moment.
    Should of held your Ron
Cristiano Ronaldo agonisingly sees the offside flag go up to deny him of his customary goal.

Man Utd 0-0 Watford – What a chance!
    19. Pogba delivered an absolute peach of a ball which landed directly on the right boot of Bruno Fernandes.
However, the Portuguese international didn’t open up his body enough which resulted in his effort going wide of the mark.
The Red Devils should be at least a couple of goals to the good.
    Man Utd 0-0 Watford
    15. It was lovely build up play from United, but it was a shame that Cristiano Ronaldo was unable to hold his run.
That is a massive wake up call to the Hornets who have been pressed back in their half for the entire game.
No goal! Correctly ruled out for offside!

Meanwhile, Rangers have been drawn against Red Star Belgrade. They’ll take that, you can imagine.

    Technical procedure being explained
So we are about to get the draw underway. The technical procedure is being explained.
I would suggest Uefa listen out for this as they fudged the Champions League last 16 draw. Fingers crossed this one goes off without a hitch!
    Who do you want?
So, West Ham and Rangers fans, who do you want to get in the last 16?
Do you want a European titan or the best possible route to the quarter-finals?
We are just moments away from finding out.
    Andres Palop to conduct draw
Former Sevilla keeper Andres Palop will conduct the draw.
Given he won the competition on three occasions and this year’s final being played in Seville, it seems fitting that he get his moment in the sun today.
    Ukrainian invasion addressed
Uefa’s deputy general secretary Giorgio Marchetti says football wants ‘peace and peace now’ in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
It comes after Uefa opted to strip Russia of the Champions League final earlier today. That match will now take place in Paris at the Stade de France.
Montages of each last 16 side
We are now being given a glimpse of each of the last 16 teams’ highlights from their Europa League campaigns so far this season.
I suppose they have to drag it out somehow.
    There we go
The audio has been corrected and coverage of the draw has begun.
The Europa League trophy is on show. You forget how absolutely huge it actually is…
    We are underway
We are underway but Uefa appear to be having issues with their audio! So far all we can hear is a very loud buzzing sound over the top of the presentation.
Not a great start for all involved.
When are the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final?

Second legs will be contested on Thursday, April 14.

First legs will be played on Monday, April 18.
Second legs will be contested on Thursday, May 5.

    Final

    Nearly draw time
Right, it looks like we are about to get underway with the show (not the draw just yet).
I’m sure a load of important Uefa people will have their moment on stage before we actually get to why we’re here.
