    Are Rangers final-bound?
As routes to the final of a major European competition go, Rangers have done pretty well today, avoiding Barcelona and West Ham until the finale.
They will stand a good chance of beating Sporting Braga over two legs as they have been in very good form, but may struggle against semi final opposition should they make it there.
It will be Atalanta or RB Leipzig in the semis, both of whom are teams with experience in the Champions League in recent years, and have a host of top European players…

    West Ham vs Barca Semi-Final.
We could be looking forward to a West Ham vs Barcelona Semi-Final in this years rendition of the Europa League.
That is if The Irons can get past Olympique Lyonnais, who will prove to be tough opposition for the Premier League side.
Barcelona will cruise past Eintracht Frankfurt on paper, but did struggle against Galatasaray, and are not the side that they once were with Lionel Messi and co.
This would be a cracking tie if both teams can get through, and it is the one that all the neutrals want to see.
Just imagine if Moyes’ boys upset the Catalan giants? Scenes.
    Time to reflect
Stay with us for a reflection on the Europa League draw, as well as dates for the Quarter and Semi-Final.

    Semi Final 1
Leipzig or Atalanta vs Sporting Braga or Rangers
    Sporting Braga vs Rangers
The last tie is Braga vs Rangers, if Morelos and Tavernier are on form this could be a very tasty tie that the Scots will be hoping to win.
    West Ham vs Olympique Lyonnnais
West Ham will feel confident in taking the win here, but will have to stop top scorer Karl Toko-Ekambi to do so.
    Eintracht Frankfurt vs FC Barcelona
Barca will be favourites here, despite struggling against Turkish opposition last time out. No Barca vs West Ham just yet.
    RB Leipzig vs Atalanta
    A tasty tie out first.

The Golden Boot race is on…
Of the players remaining in the competition, Lyon’s Karl Toko-Ekambi is currently leading the race for the golden boot on six goals, followed by Frankfurt’s Daichi Kamada and Rangers’ Alfredo Morelos on four.
The Lyon hitman was also the second highest scorer at this years AFCON, so he is definitely a man with his shooting boots on in 2022.

    RO16 Round Up
We saw some explosive ties in the Round of 16 of the competition this year, which included FC Barcelona for the first time since 2004, when it was known as the UEFA Cup.

RB Leipzig were given a bye into the next round due to Russia’s involvement in the war in Ukraine.

West Ham fans will be feeling confident after beating ‘Europa League specialists’ Sevilla in the last round, thanks to a fitting Andriy Yarmolenko winner in additional time.
Rangers lost their second leg tie to Red Star Belgrade yesterday, but will definitely prove a tough test for whoever they face in the Quarter-Final.

    Good news for Chelsea
Chelsea’s tie with Atletico Madrid will be reversed, as Atletico and Real Madrid cannot both play at home in the first tie.
This means that the game will be played in The Bernabeu for the first leg, with the second leg being played at Stamford Bridge.
This is great news for fans of The Blues, as it means they are more likely to have fans in attendance after new ownership has been decided.
Another good bit of news for Chelsea fans is that Los Blancos have NEVER beaten Chelsea in an official game in their history…
    Quarter Final draw dates
The first leg of Quarter-Finals will take place on April 6th and 7th.
The second leg of Quarter-Final games will be on April 13th and 14th.
it is not yet confirmed which teams will play on the Tuesday and which teams will play on the Wednesday.
    This years Quarter Finals
The draw is now complete, and there are some very exciting ties to look forward to.
We will see a repeat of last years Semi-Final, as the holders Chelsea face off against 13-time winners Real Madrid, which will also see Eden Hazard return to Stamford Bridge.
Man City vs Atletico Madrid is also set to be a highlight, as Man City will look to dominate an Atletico side that are extremely strong without the ball, as they showed against Manchester United.
The draw is as follows for the first route to the final…

    Chelsea vs Real Madrid
    Man City vs Atletico Madrid

Benfica or Liverpool will face Villarreal or Bayern Munich in the other Semi-Final.
    Road to the final…
Manchester City or Atletico Madrid will face Chelsea or Real Madrid in the first Semi Final.
    Benfica vs Liverpool
Liverpool have a favourable draw here against Benfica, you would expect them to cruise through to the Semi-Finals, but the Portuguese side may surprise The Reds.
    Villarreal vs Bayern Munich
Robert Lewandowski will be looking to climb the all-time scoring charts in a tie where Bayern will definitely be favourites.

Declan Rice said he’d take anyone. But who do you want, West Ham fans?
‘Best night I’ve had at West Ham’ – Declan Rice
Declan Rice was overcome with joy speaking to BT, here’s what he had to say:
It was so, so special today. This club, the stadium, the fans, the players, we deserve these big European nights. We stepped up tonight. We knew with our fans and the quality we had on the pitch tonight we could do it. Probably the best night I’ve had at West Ham. I’ll take anyone. There’s no one to fear. Sevilla were probably the favourites. When the draw happened people thought we’d get knocked out, and we’ve knocked them out.Declan Rice, West Ham midfielder
    Antonio by numbers
West Ham’s number nine was electric this evening, running the Sevilla defence all over the place. Here are his stats:

    West Ham 2-0 Sevilla
    112, Wow, simply wow.
And just like that, history is written.
Ukranian international, Yarmolenko, taps home from close range, and the script is complete.
Fornals lets fly from range, and his shot is parried by Bono into Yarmolenko who slides it in from 5 yards.
A truly incredible moment, thoroughly deserved by West Ham.

GOAL! – West Ham 2-0 Sevilla
    Yarmolenko scores!
It was written in the stars.
    West Ham 1-0 Sevilla
109, Munir has the chance to find Rafa Mir, but decides to turn back and play it in field. A strange decision which makes you feel Sevilla really are playing for penalties.
Antonio gets up the other end and has the chance to play through formals 1 on 1 with the keeper. But he overhits the pass and it runs through for Bono. It was a tired pass.
Gudelj is now down with cramp, and Antonio offers his help to stretch him out. Very kind considering he’s run round the centre back for the last 110 minutes.

    West Ham 1-0 Sevilla
106, The ball falls to rice on the edge of the area and he strikes right through it, but it spins out way over the goal. You’d expect better from him.
Another chance goes begging for the Hammers.
Second half of extra time – West Ham 1-0 Sevilla
West Ham dominated the first half of this extra time, creating some clear cut chances. Sevilla look tired, and bring on Montiel for 36-year-old Navas.

The referee blows his whistle, and the players get a short break for a breather before the next 15 minutes begin.

    West Ham 1-0 Sevilla
103, Ben Johnson crosses to the backlist where Antonio tries to keep it alive, but Sevilla get it away.
Johnson then tries again, it comes out to Fornals who fluffs the volley.
Antonio then tries his luck against Gudelj, but runs the ball out of play.
West Ham 1-0 Sevilla – Sevilla change
101, Martial is off for attacking midfielder, Luismi.
    West Ham 1-0 Sevilla
98, Soucek heads it into the side netting!
The corner is swung in by Cresswell, and Dawson attacks it. But it eventually falls to Soucek at the back post who heads it into the side netting.
The crowd go crazy, thinking he’s scored, but he is just unable to squeeze it in.

    West Ham 1-0 Sevilla
96, Delaney barges Antonio off the ball in what can only be frustration, and gives away a silly foul.
Sevilla get it up the other end with Rafa Mir, but Lanzini gets back in the nick of time showing great pace and desire to win it back for the Hammers.

Chelsea ticket sales latest, Tuchel distances himself from Boro FA Cup plea, Havertz’ classy gesture – latest updates

THOMAS TUCHEL has distanced himself from Chelsea’s appeal to the FA to play their Cup tie at Middlesbrough behind closed doors. After the Blues board were condemned, following an attempt to make the case the game should be played in front of no fans, Tuchel has backed a U-turn.
The German said: “I think the proposal was withdrawn and it was absolutely the right thing to do, because that was from our side and hopefully it was not meant like this.”
And under the terms and conditions of their latest restriction, it states that Chelsea are unable to sell tickets until a takeover has been complete.
As a result, the Blues are asking for Saturday’s FA Cup quarter-final at Middlesbrough to be played behind closed doors.
Meanwhile, Kai Havert has revealed that he is willing to fund his own travel for the away fixture.
Keep reading to find out more on the situation surrounding Chelsea’s ownership problems.

    Aethel joins Blues hunt
Aethel Partners have become the latest bidders to emerge as groups compete to buy Chelsea from Roman Abramovich.
The London-based equity firm have thrown their hats into the ring ahead of tomorrow’s deadline.
The Times’ Martyn Ziegler reports that they are ready to pay more than £2billion for the crisis club.

Should their bid be successful, they plan to keep Thomas Tuchel and his current staff in place.
They have also pledged to immediately invest £50million in order to ‘keep the club solvent’.
Their executive chairman is Portuguese entrepreneur Ricardo Silva.
Aethel Partners would like to redevelop Stamford Bridge on its current site.
A number of candidates to buy Chelsea have already emerged. Blues season ticket holder Nick Candy is eager to buy his boyhood club. The luxury property developer is putting together a consortium and has been backed by former star Gianluca Vialli.
Tuchel up to third favourite for Utd job
Thomas Tuchel is in contention to become Manchester United manager at the beginning of the 2022-23 campaign.
That’s according to bookmakers Betfair, who’ve installed the Chelsea tactician at 7/2 to switch his allegiances from Stamford Bridge to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils will look to accelerate their hunt for a permanent appointment over the next few weeks.
And the Daily Star claim that United CEO Richard Arnold has pinpointed Tuchel as the club’s preferred option, ahead of Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag.
Arnold supposedly wants a deal in place BEFORE the end of the current season. And the growing uncertainty surrounding Chelsea’s ownership has given United ‘genuine hope’ that Tuchel is now available.
The Athletic also report that the 48-year-old would be ‘open’ to speaking with United representatives and hearing their proposals. Club legend Paul Scholes believes United should be desperately trying to take advantage of the uncertainty at Chelsea.

    Parimatch off for Blues
A Chelsea sponsor with links to Ukraine is the latest to suspend commercial activity with the club.
But Parimatch Tech, whose joint chief executives are Ukrainian, will continue to use their LED screens at Stamford Bridge.
That’s in order to promote relief efforts in the wartorn country.
Parimatch Tech promotes the online gambling site Parimatch, as well as providing technological and marketing support to the gambling and entertainment industries.
It signed a three-year deal with Chelsea last autumn.
But the UK Government’s decision to sanction Blues owner Roman Abramovich because of his close links to Russian president Vladimir Putin has caused particular issues for the Cyprus-based company.
CEOs Roman Syrotian and Maksym Liashko are both Ukrainian.
And they studied in the capital Kyiv before embarking on business careers.
Parimatch Tech said in a statement: “After considering the situation, we have decided to pause all joint marketing and brand campaigns with the Club featuring the Parimatch logo and brand.
“Together with our licensed partner in Great Britain, we have agreed to use the LED display systems at Stamford Bridge exclusively for the promotion of our volunteering and donation activities to help Ukraine, which Chelsea FC are supportive of.”
    Be scared to Tuch us
During what has been an incredibly tumultuous time within the game of football and the wider world, Thomas Tuchel has won admirers with the manner in which he has handled himself and answered each question put to him with respect and clarity.
However, the Chelsea manager may have saved his best response until last night when discussing his side’s place in the last eight of the Champions League.
When asked which side he would prefer to avoid in the quarter-finals, the German coach smiled warmly and said: “I want us to be the team nobody wants to play.
“That’s the role we want to see ourselves in for this last eight.”
    Lampard fears for Chelsea friends
Chelsea legend Frank Lampard has revealed his fears for Stamford Bridge staff facing job losses in the fallout of Roman Abramovich’s sanction.
The club’s all-time top scorer may be currently concerned with trying to save Everton from relegation, but as the crisis deepens, he declared: “My focus has to be on Everton, but I was a player there for 13 years and manager for a couple of years too.
“So on a human level I care very much about those at Chelsea who might be losing their jobs. It’s a tough moment for the club and for them and I care also about the supporters.
“It’s a situation that is possibly difficult for the players and what might be happening to those who are maybe coming to their contract end.”

Three Lions select Mount and James
Chelsea duo Reece James and Mason Mount have been selected in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the upcoming friendlies with Switzerland and Ivory Coast.
There’s also a place for Conor Gallagher, Crystal Palace’s on-loan Blues midfielder, plus a first senior call-up for former Chelsea youngster, Marc Guehi.
Guehi isn’t the only Chelsea academy graduate to be included in the 25 either with Roma striker Tammy Abraham picked among the forwards.

    Parimatch pull plug on sponsorship
Sports betting company Parimatch have become the latest of Chelsea’s partners to distance themselves from the club, according to The Mail’s Sami Mokbel.
A statement from the firm read: “After considering the situation, we have decided to pause all joint marketing and brand campaigns with the Club featuring the Parimatch logo and brand.”
Action was taken following sanctions against Chelsea and their owner Roman Abramovich given the oligarch’s close links with Russia president Vladimir Putin.
Parimatch was founded in Ukraine capital Kyiv in 1994, and yesterday doubled its financial assistance for the people of Ukraine to £1.5 million.
    Fans may yet see quarters
Chelsea hope that their supporters may yet be allowed to buy tickets for the home leg of their forthcoming Champions League quarter-final.
It was widely understood that the club would be forced to play the last eight tie behind closed doors following sanctions placed upon them and owner Roman Abromivich.
However, The Telegraph report that the Government are planning talks with Uefa in the hope of finding a resolution that allows fans to attend.
Officials are supposedly waiting until after Friday’s draw before approaching the subject.
Tuchel: We want to be feared
During what has been an incredibly tumultuous time within the game of football and the wider world, Thomas Tuchel has won admirers with the manner in which he has handled himself and answered each question put to him with respect and clarity.
However, the Chelsea manager may have saved his best response until last night when discussing his side’s place in the last eight of the Champions League.
When asked which side he would prefer to avoid in the quarter-finals, the German coach smiled warmly and said: “I want us to be the team nobody wants to play.
“That’s the role we want to see ourselves in for this last eight.”

    Blues waiting to approach Gavi
Chelsea’s current sanctions have not stopped the club from planning for the future with the Londoners ready to submit an offer for Barcelona wonderkid Gavi as soon as they’re under new ownership.
The 17-year-old starlet has enjoyed a wonderful season having broken through at the Nou Camp, and even won four senior caps for his country at the end of last year.
However, negotiations on a new professional deal have stalled with Barca chiefs, and reports in Spain suggest that the two parties are a considerable distance apart when it comes to reaching an agreement.
The developments have alerted all of Europe’s major clubs, but The Blues are understood to be particularly keen on the cultured midfielder, who would be available for a cool £42 million this summer.
    Vialli backs Candy consortium bid
Former Chelsea star Gianluca Vialli has spoken out in support of Nick Candy’s attempt to buy the club, and indicated he is helping the property tycoon in his endeavour.
The Italian, who both played and managed The Blues in the late 1990s, released a statement announcing that his investment company, Tifosy Capital & Advisory, had also been brought it as part of Candy’s £2.5 billion offer to purchase the club he so ardently supports.
Vialli’s statement read: “I am proud and feel very privileged to support Mr Candy’s bid to buy Chelsea Football Club.
“I have met Nick Candy on a number of occasions over the last few weeks and I am fully behind his visions and commitment to make Chelsea the most globally recognised and supported club in the world, as well as maintaining the ongoing success on the pitch.
“We share the same view that if the bid is successful, we will try to be the best possible custodians of the club, knowing that it is imperative that supporter concerns are front and centre of any owner’s priorities.”
    New deal off for Rudiger
Chelsea are preparing for life without Antonio Rudiger – despite having agreed a new contract with the German defender.
The centre-back had reportedly said yes to personal terms on a new mega-deal at Stamford Bridge before the club was hit by sanctions.
Major restrictions in place at Stamford Bridge prevent The Blues from signing players or offering current staff new contracts.
The developments have left other clubs on red alert and ready to raid the Londoners with Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus all thought to be interested in talking to Rudiger.
The 29-year-old’s departure will be particularly frustrating for supporters with negotiations having rumbled on for months prior to the recent sanctions.

    Chelsea to learn CL fate
So much uncertainty still engulfs Chelsea, but the football club will at least be able to start planning for their Champions League quarter-final tomorrow morning.
The draw for both the last eight and the semi-finals will be made at 11am on Friday at the House of European Football in Nyon, Switzerland.
However, the Premier League outfit are still unsure as to whether they will be able to sell tickets to supporters following sanctions against owner Roman Abramovich in both the UK and the EU. A game behind closed doors – especially at Stamford Bridge – seems the most likely outcome.
Friday is also D-Day when it comes to perspective owners with any interested parties having until then to submit official bids to buy the Londoners.
    Morning Chelsea fans
Chelsea cruised into the Champions League quarter-finals – but it’s not known where owner Roman Abramovich is sailing.
Meanwhile, Seb Coe hopes American bidders for Chelsea will jog on after the Olympic legend joined the race to buy out Abramovich.
Russian oligarch Abramovich’s two megayachts are said to be heading for safe haven Turkey after he was hit by Government sanctions.
In contrast, the Blues don’t know who awaits next in what could be a last-eight tie played behind closed doors.
Christian Pulisic and skipper Cesar Azpilicueta sealed their 2-1 comeback win in Lille and 4-1 success on aggregate.
Boss Thomas Tuchel said: “It’s so nice that so many fans are here and took the time to travel and support the team.
“It feels brilliant. We’re in the quarter-finals. It’s a big step. We showed again resilience and overcame difficulties… We got a deserved win.
“But the attention around Stamford Bridge remains firmly on the takeover saga.
And it’s something of a sprint for middle-distance running legend Coe as the deadline for bidding approaches.
The London Olympics chief has joined ex-Liverpool chairman Sir Martin Broughton’s consortium team.
Lord Coe said: “I am certain Sir Martin is the right man to lead Chelsea Football Club into its next chapter.
“He has an exceptional track record in British business, as well as unrivalled experience in shepherding Liverpool out of a very difficult situation.”
Their main rivals could be Chicago Cubs owner Thomas Ricketts, who has linked up with billionaire hedge fund tycoon Ken Griffin.
But the Saudi Media Group are still said to be interested.
The Blues hope the Government will relax restrictions to allow sanction-hit Abramovich to sell the club this month.
    Tuchel makes Champions League history
Thomas Tuchel wrote his name into the Champions League history books and surpassed Zinedine Zidane with the ruthless victory in Lille.
The Chelsea boss saw his side fight back from behind to win 2-1 on the night in France.

Goals from Christian Pulisic and Cesar Azpilicueta either side of the break ensured a safe passage into the quarters for the holders.
And those goals also confirmed Tuchel’s 32nd win as a manager in the competition.
That drew the German equal with compatriot Jupp Heynckes as the coach with the most victories inside his first 50 matches in the competition.
However, Heynckes secured 32 wins from a total of 47 games in charge – winning it in 2013 in his third stint as Bayern Munich boss.
Tuchel bettered Zidane’s tally of 31 from his opening 50.
Coe backs Broughton and Co for Chelsea
Sebastian Coe has taken on the Americans bidding to buy Chelsea.
Lord Coe threw his weight behind Sir Martin Broughton’s consortium – and would take a seat on the board should they be successful.
The head of London’s 2012 Olympics bid hailed former Liverpool chairman Broughton as the perfect person to take the helm in the wake of Roman Abramovich’s sale of the Blues.

Coe said: “I am certain Sir Martin is the right man to lead Chelsea Football Club into its next chapter. He has an exceptional track record in British business, as well as unrivalled experience in shepherding Liverpool out of a very difficult situation.
“He has the vision, acumen and financial backing to ensure our club’s future success, keeping Chelsea Football Club at the top of European football and challenging for trophies.
“But most importantly, like me, he is a lifelong Chelsea supporter and Shed End season-ticket holder. This bid is for the millions of Chelsea fans around the world. We love our club and will always put the fans first.”
    Rest of the Chelsea ratings
    Kai Havertz – 8
Some nice clever touches from him and he was also looking strong on the ball holding it up when needed.
Looked dangerous and direct when he dropped in and got on the ball.
    Subs
    Trevoh Chalobah (for Christensen, 33) – 6
Had to come on as an early sub for Christensen.
Got booked almost instantly for a silly challenge and looked a little uncomfortable after that bar some good drives forward with the ball.
    Mason Mount (for Kovacic, 45) – 8
Really good impact when he came on and provided a lovely assist for Azpilicueta to score. Full of energy and really direct.
    Ruben Loftus-Cheek (for Jorginho, 74) – 7
Strong on the ball, intensity, and some nice little touches as well.
    Romelu Lukaku (for Pulisic, 74) – 7
Looked decent when he came on, good physicality and some nice link-ups with Havertz.
    Hakim Ziyech (for Havertz, 83) – N/A
Was not on long enough to impact the game.
    Chelsea ratings continued
    N’Golo Kante – 6
Not one of his greatest games really in terms of what he usually brings to the table.
He wasn’t quite keeping the ball well enough in the first half but improved a lot in the second half when he was playing a little deeper.
    Matteo Kovacic – 8
Running the show really and never giving it away. Keeping his lovely close control and dribbling ability was amazing again. Did well to help Chelsea keep the ball under pressure.
He was taken off at half-time which was shocking, must be injured, you’d assume.
    Christian Pulisic – 8
Took his equalising goal very well and stayed composed when through on goal.
I prefer to see him out wide so there was moments he looked uncomfortable, but had a very good game really overall and was actually moved out wide.
    More Chelsea ratings
    Antonio Rudiger – 7
Intense and energetic as usual and his leadership was needed for Chelsea.
Brings the ball out from the ball well when there isn’t a pass on to ease the pressure.
    Marcos Alonso – 6
Some neat touches, but also some poor ones. He was there but wasn’t really bringing a lot to the table.
Not enough pace to be an effective wing-back for me unfortunately.
    Jorginho – 6
Silly handball to give away a penalty in the first half but he redeemed himself for that error with a lovely assist for Pulisic to score the equaliser.
Not his best game though really and struggled to adjust in the midfield three Tuchel deployed.
    Chelsea ratings
    Edouard Mendy – 6/10
Dived the right way for the penalty but could not save it. Had a few other shots to deal with that he managed well, some of his distribution was questionable though at times.
    Cesar Azpilicueta – 9
His determination and work rate was insane again. Made some good tackles and blocks and contributed in attacks as much as he could.
His run to get on the end of Mason Mount’s cross to score was amazing and he took the finish well.
    Andreas Christensen – 6
Had a reasonable first half an hour but unfortunately got an injury and had to come off.
    Thiago Silva – 7
Sometimes a little too calm and slow to make the pass, but even still, there is nobody better at playing out from the back than Silva and he was needed as Lille were pressing intensely.
    RESULT: Lille 1 Chelsea 2 (1-4)
Christian Pulisic and Cesar Azpilicueta clinched Chelsea’s comeback win on the night and comfortable aggregate success overall.
Now the Blues must see if their Champions League quarter-final tie will be behind closed doors.

Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool LIVE RESULT: Jota and Firmino goals see Reds secure crucial win – Premier League reaction

LIVERPOOL have beaten Arsenal at the Emirates.Diogo Jota fired home at Aaron Ramsdale’s near post before Roberto Firmino added a second on what turned out to be a comfortable evening for Jurgen Klopp’s men.
    That’s all from the Emirates
So, the mission is clear for Liverpool. Win every game possible. And for Arsenal, well, much the same really.
Thank you for reading, and goodnight!

    Just one point in it
Whoever you support, this is exciting.
Liverpool have won their last nine, and in another nine games time either Liverpool or Manchester City will be crowned Premier League Champions.
With both teams still to play each other, it could go either way. Who are you backing?

Our performance doesn’t reflect the result – Mikel Arteta
Scoring goal was Arsenal’s problem this evening, and Arteta knows it.
Here’s what he had to say:
In the boxes, that’s where they won the game. They had two chances and scored two goals. We had chances but didn’t score. But the rest we went toe to toe with the best team in the league right now. Our performance doesn’t reflect the result… If Odegaard puts that in the net, it is. different game. I am very proud of the boys.Mikel Arteta, Arsenal boss

    Klopp defends Trent
Klopp was passionate in his post match interview when talking about his precious right-back. Questions have been raised regarding Alexander-Arnold’s ability to defend, but the Liverpool boss was not having any of it after his performance against Martinelli this evening. Here’s what he had to say:
Trent defended the diagonal balls to Martinelli incredibly. Martinelli is such a talented boy, he is really tricky. If anybody says Trent cannot defend, come to me and I will kick him down, honestly I cannot hear that any more! I don’t know what the boy has to do.Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool boss

    Full time at the Emirates
So, it’s nine in a row for Liverpool who go one point behind Manchester City with a hugely important win this evening. Arsenal stay fourth, three points above their London rivals, Tottenham, with an extra game to play.
After an equal and exciting first half, Jota silenced the Arsenal fans, before an inspired substitution saw Firmino kill off Arsenal’s hope of a result. They were steady in defence and ruthless when the opportunities came their way.
It wasn’t to be for Arsenal who had their moments, but weren’t able to take their chances in front of goal. The Gunners were unable to maintain their concentration once Liverpool stepped up a gear in the second half. Martinelli shone bright, but it wasn’t enough.

Full time – Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool
Andre Mariner calls time on this evening’s game.
Liverpool win, and edge ever closer to Manchester City.

    Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool
93, Salah attempts to find Mane, but misses both him and Firmino and Arsenal can clean up.
Martinelli still running at defenders down the left, but it’s a throw-in to Liverpool.
Mane then picks up the ball in a good position and plays it wide to Salah who cuts inside to try and fire in a third. But it’s nicked off him at the last second and Arsenal get it away.
    Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool
90, The board goes up for three added minutes.
Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool – Liverpool change
89, Thiago is off for Jones. Some tactical time wasting from the spaniard as he leaves the field and soaks up the boos and applause.
    Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool
    87, Chance for Martinelli!
A nice move started by Smith Rowe. Xhaka is urged to shoot but slips in Martinelli who shapes up to bend one first time. His curling effort goes narrowly wide of Allison’s post.
A bit of the Thierry Henry about that effort, it has to be said. Just not quite as clinical, yet.
    Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool
84, Firmino links up brilliantly with Robertson, but the Scottsman’s ball out to Salah is intercepted.
Arsenal get up the other end, but they can’t get past Liverpool’s back line.
    Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool
82, The Arsenal fans are booing referee, Andre Mariner for Thaigo’s follow through on Partey, but the man with the whistle isn’t interested.
Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool – Arsenal substitution
79, Nketiah is on for Lacazette up top.
Ten minutes to score a hat-trick, Eddie.
    Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool
79, Careless passing by Arsenal, and they give it away to Thiago. The Spaniard then plays a quick ball through to Salah, who bends a shot come cross to the back post, but Cedric is able to head it out of danger.
    Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool
77, Alexander Arnold with an outswinging corner towards Van Djik who makes contact, but his header’s blocked.
Tierney then plays a speculative ball over the top towards Lacazette, but the Frenchman can’t bring it under control.
    Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool
75, Cedric whips a cross in from the right hand side. Liverpool struggle to clear it in a messy box. But to their relief the flag goes up for offside.

Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool – Arsenal change
73, Saka is off and replaced by Pepe
    Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool
73, Martinelli runs out of room.
Arsenal’s star man this evening is released by Partey down the left wing, but he is tracked well by Alexander Arnold this time, and it’s out for a goal kick.

    Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool
71, Partey is frustrated by Firmino’s challenge, and the Arsenal fanfare on their feet for every foul against them, now.
Frustration is building as Liverpool look to kill this game.
    Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool
67, All of Arsenal’s hard work in the first half has been wasted.
But you can hear the Arsenal fans in here again.
Saka plays the ball into Lacazette who can’t control it, but Smith Rowe picks up the scraps and unleashes a shot on goal. It’s blocked on it’s way but a reminder that Arsenal could get back into this.
Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool – Arsenal substitution
66, Odegaard is off for Smith Rowe, giving Arsenal fans something to cheer about.
    Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool
61, Firmino taps home from close range just minutes after coming on.
Saka tries to clear, but Robertson wins it back and drives down the by-line before intelligently sliding a great ball across the 6 yard box.
Firmino pointed to where he wanted it and dispatched it cutely past Ramsdale for Liverpool’s second of the night. The Brazilian picks up a yellow for his celebrations with the crowd, not that he’ll care.
    Arsenal completely undone.

    GOAL! – Arsenal 0-2 Liverpool
Firmino off the bench to score!
Arsenal 0-1 Liverpool – Liverpool change
57, Firmino is also on for Diaz
Arsenal 0-1 Liverpool – Liverpool substitution
57, Here comes the change. What an exit for Jota. Having just put Liverpool in front, he is replaced by Salah.

    Reigning European Champions march on
That’s all from us in France where Chelsea progress to the quarter-finals as they continue the defence of their Champions League title.
Despite a two-goal advantage from the first leg, The Blues were made to fight for their place in the last eight, and had to come from behind in Lille to win on the night.
Afterwards, Thomas Tuchel praised the players resilience as they dug deep to give the visiting fans some welcome relief after a troubled fortnight.
Tomorrow the saga of ownership and takeovers will be confronted again, but for tonight Chelsea can celebrate their accomplishments on the pitch.
    Thanks for reading, and goodnight.
    How did the Blues do
Kai Havertz and Mateo Kovacic impressed, but Marcos Alonso again failed to convince as a wing-back.
Check out how the rest of the Chelsea players scored in Simon Phillips’ playing ratings.
    Tuchel delighted with Chelsea resilience
Thomas Tuchel has managed 50 games in the Champions League, and won 32 of them. No manager in history has won more games in their first 50 matches in the competition.
After tonight’s game, the Chelsea boss paid tribute to his players for their characters, and admitted he got his side’s tactics wrong in the early stages of the contest.
It’s so nice that so many fans are here and took the time to travel and support the team. It feels brilliant. We’re in the quarter-finals. It’s a big step. We showed again resilience and overcame difficulties. We did what was necessary, and got a deserved win. It’s difficult here, and we did what was needed so well done to the team.
[The equaliser was perfect timing]. We were not so good in the first half. The pitch was horrible, it made things complicated for us. It’s brand new but not ready to be played on. The tactics were not right in the first 20 minutes so I take responsibility for that.Thomas TuchelBT Sport

    Match stats from Stade Pierre-Mauroy
After a promising start, Lille ran out of steam, and were eventually out-passed and out-played by the European champions.

Full time – Lille 1-2 Chelsea (agg: 1-4)
In the end it was a formality as Chelsea win on the night, and progress to the quarter-finals with a 4-1 aggregate win.
Lille worked hard, and fought from the first whistle. Burak Yilmaz’s penalty gave them real belief, but a Christian Pulisic goal on the stroke of half-time swung the momentum fully in Chelsea’s favour.
A second half strike from Cesar Azpilicueta ensured the European champions another Champions League victory, and they can now start to ponder Friday’s draw.

Lille 1-2 Chelsea (agg: 1-4) – Fonte yellow card
90+4. Romelu Lukaku gains possession, and squares up to Jose Fonte on the edge of the penalty area.
The Chelsea substitute goes to use his pace and power to beat the Lille man, only to find himself flattened.
    It’s a yellow card to Fonte, and a free-kick for Chelsea that’s ultimately wasted by…guess who…Marcos Alonso.
    Lille 1-2 Chelsea (agg: 1-4)
90+2. There’s still time for ANOTHER lazy piece of play from Alonso.
The Spaniard is slipped through on goal by Mount’s pass. He could go for power or square to an unmarked teammate, but opts for some kind of weak chip that Leo Jardim bats away.
    Lille 1-2 Chelsea (agg: 1-4)
90+1. There’s still time for another lazy piece of play from Alonso.
Chelsea spark a break that has them two on one with the the wing-back charging down the left.
He only has to beat the defender with his cross to find Lukaku but fires it straight into his opponent.
    Lille 1-2 Chelsea (agg: 1-4)
    90. The board goes up for four minutes that nobody really wants.
    Lille 1-2 Chelsea (agg: 1-4)
    87. Yilmaz keeps battling away. Everyone else inside the Stade Pierre Mauroy know the game is up, but he keeps battling away anyway.
    Fair play to the 36-year-old.
    Lille 1-2 Chelsea (agg: 1-4)
    85. Meanwhile, in Turin, Villarreal have gone 2-0 up on Juventus, and are minutes away from causing a big shock.
Lille 1-2 Chelsea (agg: 1-4) – Chelsea substitution
    83. That effort was Havertz’s last act and he becomes the latest player to depart early.
Hakim Ziyech, an impressive performer in the first leg, is on for the final seven minutes.
    Lille 1-2 Chelsea (agg: 1-4)
    82. Havertz has a shot on the run from 25 yards that rolls straight into the hands of Leo Jardim.
    Lille 1-2 Chelsea (agg: 1-4)
    80. It’s that time of the game where Chelsea fans are beginning to chat amongst themselves, asking when the draw is and looking up flights to potential opponents.
“Dave, when do tickets go on s…ah, never mind.”
Lille 1-2 Chelsea (agg: 1-4) – Lille substitutions
    78. Now it’s the Ligue 1’s side turn to make some substitutions, and it’s a triple.
Angel Gomes, Domagoj Bradaric and former Newcastle favourite Hatem Ben Arga come on. Off go the impressive Jonathan Bamba, Gabriel Gudmundsson, and Jonathan David.
If there’s one of those petitions for parliament against five substitutions in games, I’m ready to put my name to it.
    Lille 1-2 Chelsea (agg: 1-4)
    76. Chelsea have had two shots on target tonight, and found the net with both of them.
The kind of German precision that Thomas Tuchel will appreciate.
Lille 1-2 Chelsea (agg: 1-4) – Chelsea substitutions
    74. With the tie done and dusted, Thomas Tuchel takes the opportunity to introduce some of his second string.
Here come Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Romelu Lukaku, on for Jorginho and Christian Pulisic.
    Lille 1-2 Chelsea (agg: 1-4)
    71. Chelsea are heading for the Champions League quarter-finals!
It’s a brilliantly worked goal that stems down the left with Marcos Alonso heading a looped pass into the path of Mason Mount.
On the run, Mount looks up and fizzes a low cross towards the far post for the arriving Cesar Azpilicueta, who meets the ball fortuitously with his knee to find the net.
After a torrid two weeks, Chelsea fans have something to celebrate. They lead 2-1 on the night, 4-1 on aggregate.

    Goal! Cesar Azpilicueta scores!
    71. Chelsea are in front on the night!
Cesar Azpilicueta is the man on target!
    Lille 1-1 Chelsea (agg: 1-3)
    69. Chelsea have certainly slipped into game management mode, and are doing everything they can to slow down the game and speed up the clock.
Maison de merde as they say in this part of the world.
    Lille 1-1 Chelsea (agg: 1-3)
    66. Mendy incurs the wrath of the home fans by taking an age to take a goalkick before one idiot takes things too far by throwing an object in the keeper’s direction.
Referee Massa comes over to the scene, and Mendy hands him what appears to be a lighter.

Lille 1-1 Chelsea (agg: 1-3) – Xeka hits the post!
    63. Lille come so close to taking the lead on the night!
Yilmaz curls in a peach of a cross from the right flank, for the arriving Xeka to head against the post. Mendy was well beaten.
Chelsea’s marking there was non-existent, and Thiago Silva is letting the rest of his defence know about it.

    Lille 1-1 Chelsea (agg: 1-3)
    61. Yilmaz and Chalobah clash again, and this time it’s the Chelsea man who comes off worse.
There’s an immediate suggestion that Yilmaz used an elbow, but replays again come out in favour of the Lille forward. In using Chalobah for leverage, he happened to catch the defender in the face with his hand.
Thomas Tuchel is not happy with the challenge, however, and makes his point of view clear to his opposite number.
    Lille 1-1 Chelsea (agg: 1-3)
    59. Pulisic wins a free-kick outside the area that Alonso will inevitably make a mess of.
And that’s exactly what happens as he fires it into the wall. However, Rudiger reacts quickly to the rebound and fires in a shot on the spin from 25 yards that whistles inches past the post.
    Superb technique from the German.

Juventus 0-3 Villarreal (1-4) LIVE RESULT: Pau Torres strike and two penalties see Europa League winners run riot

JUVENTUS have been hammered by Villarreal.A Gerard Moreno penalty put the Europa League winners ahead before Pau Torres doubled their lead.
And former Bournemouth star Arnaut Danjuma then converted a second spot kick in injury time.
    The Yellow Submarine marches on
Cue The Beatles song, the champagne and the celebrations.
Unai Emery’s team will be in the draw for the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League on Friday.
They did a right number on Juventus in Turin tonight.

Danjuma beams from ear to ear
    Goalscorer and ex-Bournemouth player Danjumo:
The feeling is unbelievable, indescribable, I don’t have words. The sky is the limit, if you work hard you will get the reward. It’s a great win but I am already looking ahead and wanting to win more.Arnaut DanjumaVillarreal
    Rebuilding project ahead
Massimiliano Allegri has a big building project ahead of him.
Creating a side that can dominate Serie A may be an easier task than building a team that can again be one of the top sides in Europe.
They are a long way off the pace when it comes to the teams who are going to be challenging to win this trophy.
    ‘Old Lady’ out to pasture
Nobody expected an emphatic Villarreal victory tonight, least of all me in the opening exchanges of the first-half.
Once they scored, Juventus crumbled completely.
Leaving themselves open at the back for another two goals.
The last goal was like something you would see on a parks pitch.

    FT: Juventus 0-3 Villarreal
The referee puts the remaining Juventus fans out of their misery.
    Brilliant result for the Spaniards.
Allegri will be swinging punches in the changing rooms.
    Juventus 0-3 Villarreal
90+3. Capoue is brought to the ground in the Juventus half.
No need to attack the goal now for the Yellow Submarine.
They just pass it around to run the clock down.

    Juventus 0-3 Villarreal
90+2. What a finish to the game this is for the visitors.
Unai Emery will be having a drink tonight.
The ground now looks like a fire drill is taking place.
    Goal – Danjuma (Villarreal)
    Juventus 0-2 Villarreal
    89. Unbelievable break by Villarreal.
Three players against the two defenders of Juventus.
Squaring it back and fore like a school playground to take the mickey.
Eventually a shot comes in and de Ligt blocks with his hand.
    Penalty to Villarreal
    Juventus 0-2 Villarreal
    87. Well Juventus are paying the price for all the chances they missed in the first half.
Too often their efforts gave the keeper a chance as they were straight at him.
Emery sprinting down the touchline as that second one went in like Mourinho at Old Trafford (when not managing them).

    Juventus 0-2 Villarreal
    85. The corner is swung in and the marking from Juve is shocking.
Pau Torres has a free tap in from yards out and puts the tie beyond doubt.
Massive ask for Juventus to score two goals in such a short space of time,
    Goal – Pau Torres (Villarreal)
    Juventus 0-1 Villarreal
    83. Bernardeschi comes on for Juve.
Still plenty of time for a goal.
Cuadrado drives a cross in, Torres clears.

    Juventus 0-1 Villarreal
    80. It is so frustrating that VAR lets officials correct their own decisions.
For me, their decision in that instance should be penalty or not.
Not pandering the ego of the official.
Crazy that he did not award a penalty himself when the player was scythed down.
    Juventus 0-1 Villarreal
    78. Gerard Moreno puts it in the bottom right-hand corner.
    Szczesny almost got there.
    Pressure on Juventus now.
    Allegri brings on Dybala.
    Goal – Gerard Moreno (Villarreal)
    Penalty awarded to Villarreal
    Juventus 0-0 Villarreal
    75. The VAR studio has told the referee to go to the screen.
The referee did not award a penalty initially.
This translates to ‘you messed up, go and rectify it.’
    Juventus 0-0 Villarreal
    74. Emery has opted to bring on Gerard Moreno.
Hopefully the Villarreal striker can spark something here.
The Yellow Submarine attack, Coquelin seemingly brought down in the box.
    Juventus 0-0 Villarreal
    72. There is no need to see heatmaps for this half so far.
I can safely say all the play is in the middle of the park.
Locatelli passes the ball from a crossing position on the right to the centre back on the halfway line.
    Mind-bending.

    Juventus 0-0 Villarreal
    69. The Juventus fans continue to boo Villarreal in possession.
They would be quite entitled to do the same when their own team is in possession.
I don’t think even the appearance of a genie here would lead to us seeing a goal at the moment.
    Juventus 0-0 Villarreal
    67. Villarreal seem to have woken up somewhat.
Seeing some possession in the Juventus half.
    Rabiot heads it back Szscesny.
    Juventus 0-0 Villarreal
    65. Juventus really seem to have no answer when they cannot penetrate a team.
Locatelli has a shot of sorts from range but it is not troubling the goal.
Juventus seem to win back possession immediately.
    Juventus 0-0 Villarreal
    63. Coquelin and Chukwueze come on for Villarreal.
Unai Emery seeing the need to change things here.
They haven’t really offered anything as an attacking threat as yet in this half.

    Give it a rest lads
United now have some time off with their next game being a league match at Old Trafford against Leicester on 2nd April.
In the meantime, they will have to look on as they watch the Champions League quarter-final draw on Friday wondering what could have been.
Atletico will be looking for their next challenge in the competition.
    Something needs to change
Since former manager Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, United have lifted just three pieces of silverware.
They won the FA Cup under Louis Van Gaal in 2016, then the League Cup and Europa League the following season under Jose Mourinho.
This is Man Utd’s worst trophy drought in 40 years and Champions League football is not looking promising for next season.
    Running out of ideas
Man United had 60% possession throughout the game.
    Statistically, they dominated their opponents.
The game seemed to get to a stage where United just run out of ideas after Oblak and Atletico had kept them out for so long.
They played into Madrid’s hands at every opportunity, allowing them to run the clock down and frustrate them.

    Wreck it Ralf
It is hard to see where Champions League qualification is coming from now with Arsenal in such a good position in fourth spot.
It would be a major blow to a team who have only recently re-introduced themselves to Europe’s biggest competition.
The books demand the revenues it brings, players want to play in the biggest trophies which may affect the pull of the club in the transfer window.
Numerous managers have been in and out of the managerial turnstyle that is Old Trafford but nothing seems to change.
The players must have a long hard look at themselves and see why they are not delivering for the fans who fill the ground.
    Simeone masterclass wins tie
Tactically, Diego Simeone has done a real number on United today.
His side didn’t set the world alight with wave after wave of attack but what they did today was a classic European away day from Madrid.
He set them up well to absorb, counter-attack and frustrate their opponents.
    United walked straight into it.
    FT: Man Utd 0-1 Atletico
The referee gives the Madrid fans the noise they wanted to hear, as he blows the final whistle.
Simeone goes sprinting down the touchline to his fans.
They have done a number on Ralf Rangnick’s team tonight.
    Man Utd 0-1 Atletico
90+5. Even De Gea is in the box now.
The cross comes in and under no pressure at all Oblak clutches the ball out of the air.
    Last chance………..gone!
    Man Utd 0-1 Atletico
90+3. The ball is in completely the wrong end of the pitch for United.
As the Spaniards attack, the last place United want to be is their own box.
Rashford tries to cross and wins a corner.

    Man Utd 0-1 Atletico
90+1. United are awarded a free-kick on the right towards the touchline.
Chance for United to get bodies in the box.
As has been the case all too often tonight, the ball doesn’t beat the first man and Atletico manage to clear.
    Man Utd 0-1 Atletico
    89. Darren Fletcher is shown a yellow card by the referee.
Time is running out here as Pogba commits a foul with a stray arm in Herrera’s face.
We will have four minutes of added time.
    Man Utd 0-1 Atletico
    87. Atletico comes forward in no rush at all.
They are happy to pass the ball around and run the clock down.
United cannot seem to get the ball back off them.
    Man Utd 0-1 Atletico
    85. With so little time left, United are starting to become desparate.
They just cannot break the Madrid lines.
Rashford wasting the ball on the right hand side and fouling his man.
Just what Atletico want as they run the clock down some more.

Man Utd 0-1 Ateltico – Man Utd sub
    83. Juan Mata comes on for Harry Maguire.
They have a lot of attacking options on the pitch now as they chase the goal they crave here at Old Trafford.
    Quality delivery needed now.
    Man Utd 0-1 Atletico
    81. They cannot afford to play into Atletico’s hands like Matic just did.
That gave them the chance to run down another couple of minutes with the card and the free-kick.
United come forward with Sancho who wins a corner off Savic.
    Man Utd 0-1 Atletico
    79. We are approaching the final ten minutes of the game now.
The Atletico Madrid fans show their appreciation for the departing Koke.
    He is replaced by Kondogbia.
Matic receives a yellow card for throwing the ball at an opponent.
Man Utd 0-1 Atletico – Varane chance!
    77. The ball is crossed in and Varane meets it with his head.
Oblak seemed to be coming for the ball before the header and has to readjust his body quickly.
He manages to get a right-handed save to the header before Ronaldo tries an overhead kick with the rebound.
    Offside given against Ronaldo.

    Man Utd 0-1 Atletico
    75. Whistles and jeers from the crowd as Llorente stays on the floor.
Any contact with a Madrid player will allow them to go to ground now.
    Cavani comes on for United.
    Man Utd 0-1 Atletico
    73. Telles crosses the ball into the box but Oblak claims the cross.
The experienced keeper stays on the ground.
Replays show Ronaldo did catch him accidentally.
    Man Utd 0-1 Atletico
    71. Atletico are starting to frustrate United in possession.
They look so assured on the ball they are able to stretch their hosts with their slick passing.
Herrera catches Varane and the referee awards United a free-kick.
    Man Utd 0-1 Atletico
    69. Joao Felix spots De Gea off his line and goes for a long shot from just inside the halfway line.
He doesn’t catch it at all and it troubles no one.
Good spot to see the chance however.

Man Utd 0-1 Atletico – Man Utd subs
    67. Fernandes comes off for Pogba.
Rashford and Pogba also join the game.
Big games require big players to win them.
Can United turn the tide here?
    Man Utd 0-1 Ateltico
    65. Free-kick to United just wide of the penalty box for Madrid.
The referee has to have words with Savic and Ronaldo in the box.
Fernandes’ cross is inches over the head from Ronaldo who was still trying to get over the amazement of clashing heads with Maguire as they both turned the same way.
    Man Utd 0-1 Atletico
    63. Seems as though Marcus Rashford will be joining us with Paul Pogba also getting the nod from the bench.
They need to do something as the longer they go without scoring, the visitors grow in confidence.
Atletico starting to try and create that second goal to give them some breathing space in this game.
    Man Utd 0-1 Atletico
    61. Atletico break for one of the rare times in this half.
Lodi has the ball on the left and puts a whipped cross into the box.
Joao Felix so close to getting a touch on it.
Man Utd 0-1 Atletico – Sancho chance!
    59. Massive chance for Sancho.
United do well with Dalot on the overlap.
He crosses to the back post where Sancho meets the ball on the volley.
Great effort but he was unable to keep the ball down as it goes over Oblak’s bar.

    Police launch appeal for footballer
Police have appealed for information and eye witnesses after a former Scottish professional footballer died after being struck by a car on Sunday.
Paul Hampshire, 40, played for Raith Rovers, Berwick Rangers, and East Fife.
A Police Scotland statement read: “Road Policing officers in East Lothian can confirm that the man who died following a fatal collision on the A1 near Dunbar at the weekend, has been identified as 40-year-old Paul Hampshire.
“The incident took place around 1am, on Sunday, 13 March, and involved a black Ford Fiesta.
A statement from the family read: “It is with a saddened heart that Paul Hampshire, our beloved husband, dad, son, brother and uncle, has lost his life in a tragic accident.
“Paul was a devoted family man who was a larger than life character, an absolute legend and was loved by all who knew him.
“Thank you to everyone who has reached out with messages of condolence and support. It has meant so much to the whole family. We would now like time to grieve and would ask to be given privacy in which to do so.”
Inspector Brenda Sinclair, from Dalkeith Road Policing Unit, said: “Our thoughts are very much with Paul’s family and friends at this terrible time.
“Enquiries into the crash remain ongoing and we continue to urge anyone with information, or possible dashcam footage from the area, to call 101, quoting incident number 0269 of Sunday, 13 March, 2022.”

    Middlesbrough reveal Chelsea fury
Middlesbrough slammed Chelsea’s “grossly unfair” request to play their FA Cup quarter-final behind closed doors at the Riverside Stadium.
The West Londoners have asked the FA to allow Saturday’s game to go ahead without fans “for matters of sporting integrity”.
But Middlesbrough will have none of it as they described Chelsea’s request as “bizarre” and “ironic in the extreme”.
That is why Boro released a statement insisting that they will resist that suggestion “in the strongest terms”.
    Prem clubs Chelsea fears
Prem clubs fear that Chelsea’s new owner will gain a ‘competitive advantage’ over their rivals from Roman Abramovich wiping £1.5billion of debt.
Executives from rival Prem teams quizzed Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck over whether Abramovich’s promise to wipe the club’s debt would hand them a ‘competitive advantage’.
According to the Telegraph, Buck did his best to reassure rival executives that the benefits of being able to flog a debt-free Chelsea ‘far outweighed’ any downsides.
Buck, 76, also stressed that Abramovich would make no profit from the sale of the club.
He reiterated that money made from the deal will go to charity – although it is not yet known who in particular will benefit from the enormous sum.
    Pep gets on his guard
Pep Guardiola reckons the Selhurst Park’s turf made things tricky for Manchester City during their surprise draw with Crystal Palace.
The Etihad gaffer, 51, made his comments after his title-chasers nabbed a point from their stubborn hosts with Liverpool breathing down their necks.
Guardiola told Sky Sports: “The way we played was amazing in a difficult stadium with the grass not perfect, we were there all the time, we had a good game.
“I think they played good. There are still many games to play, we have to win a lot of games but the way we played, there’s no regrets about the team.
“We would have preferred to win of course but the game was well played.
“We played to win the game, we created more, the stats were there.”
    Ney-t in the mood
Neymar has been spotted at Barcelona’s airport after being brutally jeered by a section of Paris Saint-Germain’s supporters.
The Brazil striker was barracked by PSG boo boys during the French giants’ 3-0 trouncing of Bordeaux on Sunday.
Spanish outlet Sport reports the Ligue One forward was on his way to catch a flight to Paris today before his team’s clash with Monaco on Sunday.
And he appeared to be wearing a baseball cap, dark glasses and a face mask in a bid to make his departure low key.
    Hav some of that
Kai Havertz has revealed that he is willing to pay out of his own pocket for travel to Chelsea’s away game.
The Blues are in turmoil due to sanctions placed on owner Roman Abramovich after he was named on a UK Government sanctions list related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
However, Chelsea’s German striker Havertz has claimed that he would have no issue paying his own way to an away fixture.
Replying to the question, the 22-year-old said: “I would pay no problem.
“That’s not a big deal for us. For us to get to the games is the most important thing.
“There are a lot of harder things in the world right now than us taking a bus or plane to an away game and I would pay it is no problem.”

    Chelsea FA Cup demands
Chelsea are demanding their FA Cup clash away at Middlesbrough is played behind-closed-doors due to their ban on selling tickets.
Blues chiefs had pleaded with officials to let them have some some fans at Saturday evening’s game.
But the club has now announced they were rebuffed in their efforts, meaning Thomas Tuchel’s team will have little support in the last eight clash.
There will be a small handful of Chelsea fans at the Riverside who bought early release tickets prior to Abramovich being sanctioned.
    Where is Roman Abramovich now?
It is believed the Forbes-listed billionaire had been photographed in a VIP lounge at Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv, Israel airport on Monday.
And a jet linked to Abramovich landed in the Russian capital, Moscow earlier on this morning after some reports in Israel claimed he was heading to Turkey.
A video of the Chelsea owner removing his jacket surfaced the internet further adding to the speculation of the Russian’s travel plans.
Roman Abramovich is also in possession of an Israeli passport.
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Israeli restrictions have imposed on some private jets meaning that it could not have remained on the ground for more than 24 hours.
However, Abramovich’s £460 million yacht Solaris was spotted coasting the sees on Tuesday morning.
    Chelsea supporter new owners demand
The Chelsea Supporters’ Trust has laid out seven demands to any prospective new owner hoping to buy the club from Roman Abramovich.
The statement read: “The CST are seeking commitments on a number of fundamental issues from prospective buyers of the club. These include:

The outstanding balance of the loan from the club to Chelsea Pitch Owners should be forgiven, so that Stamford Bridge is secured by and for Chelsea’s supporters.

“The relevant recommendations of the 2021 Fan-led Review of Football Governance are implemented, namely:

A golden share for fans to protect key items of club heritage.
Consultation with supporters through the creation of a democratically elected shadow board.
A continued support for Chelsea FC Women and Chelsea Academy, both highly successful entities in their own right.
A commitment from prospective owners to engage in regular, constructive dialogue with supporters on issues of supporter interest, including fair ticketing and stadium development.
A commitment from prospective owners to continuing and building on the legacy of the Chelsea Foundation’s outstanding community work.
A guarantee that there will be no attempts to exit existing sporting structures without the engagement of key stakeholders, with supporters at the forefront – this includes the European Super League.”

    Haaland transfer saga continues
Erling Haaland will delay his move to Manchester City and the Premier League as Real Madrid eye up a move, according to reports.
The 21-year-old forward’s £64million release clause is active, meaning he looks set to leave Borussia Dortmund for one of the European giants in the summer.
Earlier this month it was reported that the Norwegian had signed a deal with Man City to join them at the end of the season in a £100million transfer.
Pep Guardiola is thought to be extremely keen on bringing the striker to the Etihad.
But now, according to Marca, Haaland is prepared to delay a move to the Prem until later in his career.
    Dzyuba rejects Russia call-up
Russia captain Artem Dzyuba has REJECTED a call-up to the national team just weeks after blasting Premier League-based Ukrainian stars.
Boss Valeri Karpin instead decided to organise training with plans to play a game against the Russian U21’s side.
But Dzyuba turned the call-up down ‘due to the difficult situation in Ukraine.’
Russia have no fixtures scheduled for the upcoming international break after they were banished from the World Cup qualifying play-offs amid the invasion of neighbouring Ukraine.
    Carr-ying the can
Jamie Carragher apologised to Chelsea supporters after criticising the Stamford giants’ approach to bringing in youth talent.
The Liverpool legend suggested the Blues youth level achievements were due to them poaching ‘the best players from every club within the country’.
The Sky Sports pundit, 44, faced a backlash from fans for the comments he made in regard to Chelsea’s Academy trophy success.
In response via his Twitter account, the Anfield hero wrote: “Apologies, I got a little emotional.”
    Calvert-Lewin gets speeding fine
Everton ace Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been fined £900 after he was caught driving eight miles over the speed limit in his Lamborghini.
The England star, 24, was clocked doing 58mph in a 50mph zone as he drove through Runcorn, Cheshire, in the flash motor.
He was due to stand trial at Chester Magistrates’ Court but changed his plea and admitted exceeding the speed limit.
No evidence was offered by the prosecution on a second charge of failing to give information relating to the identification of the driver.
Calvert-Lewin, who is understood to be on around £100,000 a week for the Toffees, was handed a £900 fine, £620 costs and a £90 surcharge.
His guilty plea meant to maximum fine of £1,000 was dropped by ten per cent.
    Ronaldo’s new super car
Cristiano Ronaldo celebrated his match-winning treble against Tottenham by turning up to training in a new £200,000 super car.
The Manchester United ace turned heads at Carrington as he rocked up to the gates in an amazing Aston Martin DBS Superleggera convertible.
Ronaldo, 37, was already the talk of the town after his incredible performance to sink Spurs on Saturday.
The striker netted a brilliant hat-trick, including an 81st minute winner, to keep United’s top four hopes alive.
And Ronaldo celebrated in style by splashing out on a new luxury vehicle.
    The Aston Martin DBS Superleggera boasts a 5.2 litre twin-turbocharged V12 engine, providing a mind-boggling 715 hp.
It has a top speed of 211mph, and can also go from 0-60mph in just 3.4 seconds.

    Vin the bag
Vinicius Jr responded in the best possible way after being racially abused by Mallorca fans… by celebrating in front of them.
The Real Madrid forward scored in Monday night’s 3-0 win away at the Iberostar Stadium to send Los Blancos ten points clear at the top of LaLiga.
But the victory has been marred with reports stating the 21-year-old was racially abused by the home supporters.
According to Spanish reporter Sergio Quirante, a section of fans aimed racist chants towards the Brazilian winger.
It has been claimed the incident happened as the former Flamengo forward was making his way to the tunnel at half-time.

    Eriksen gets Denmark call-up
Christian Eriksen has been named in the Denmark squad for the first time since suffering a cardiac arrest on the pitch nine months ago.
Eriksen, 30, will be back in international action in friendlies against the Netherlands and Serbia later this month – with the latter to be played at the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen – the scene of his cardiac arrest against Finland last June.
The matches will mark the former Tottenham star’s first international appearances since Euro 2020.
After being saved by hero doctors, Eriksen was fitted with an ICD device.
    Chelsea’s sponsorship woes
Chelsea have had to keep Three and Hyundai branding on their kits for recent matches, despite having been ditched by the two sponsors.
Both brands appeared as the Blues beat Norwich 3-1 on Thursday night and overcame Newcastle 1-0 on Sunday afternoon.
According to The Athletic, this is because Chelsea cannot afford to print a new kit.
They claim that to do so would breach the terms of the license given to them by the government to keep operating amid Abramovich’s sanctions.
    Prem title race view
Glen Johnson is confident that former side Liverpool will lift the Prem title this season.
He said to Bettingodds: “I’d probably say Liverpool. They’ve quietly gone about their business, chipping away at games, winning every week.
“They’re conceding less and scoring at will. No one would have thought they would have shut the gap back in January.
“Obviously it sounded crazy, with City 12 points in front of them. But how they’ve closed that gap, I think Liverpool are the ones that are ascending.”
    Bring Nun to Toon
Newcastle are reportedly planning a repeat of their £90million January transfer spree this summer.
And £60m-rated Benfica striker Darwin Nunez is at the top of Eddie Howe’s list.
I News claims the Uruguay international, 22, is Newcastle’s ‘prime’ target after they failed to sign him in the winter window.
Toon reportedly failed with a £50m offer for Nunez, who has 20 league goals in just 22 matches this season.
    Ney more curses
Neymar has finally broken the ‘curse’ of his sister’s birthday by playing for Paris Saint-Germain at the weekend – but was booed as he did so.
The Brazilian has developed a curious habit of missing matches around his younger sibling Rafaella’s March 11 birthday.
In fact, Neymar went into this year having been absent from games in seven of the last eight seasons around Rafaella’s big day.
But that was not to be this time, as he lined up against Real Madrid and Bordeaux last week.

    Merson’s damning Everton verdict
Everton’s run-in makes it difficult to see how they avoid relegation, according to former Arsenal man Paul Merson.
The Toffees currently sit perilously above the drop zone, ahead of 18th place Watford by virtue of goal difference.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson said: “I’m looking at Everton’s fixtures and the way they’re playing and I think they’re in big trouble. I think they’re the ones to go now.
“You’ve only got to look at their fixtures – they’re atrocious. I just can’t see how they stay up.”
    Liverpool chase Celtic starlet Doak
Liverpool are reportedly set to poach Scottish wonderkid Ben Doak on a free transfer from Celtic.
The 16-year-old is yet to sign a professional contract at the Scottish giants and would only command a small compensation fee, which could be as little as £150,000.
And according to The Athletic, the Reds are set to win the race for Doak with the prospect of working with Jurgen Klopp proving pivotal.
    Chelsea face losing starlets
Chelsea faces losing its next generation of stars unless the Government changes its mind on signing new contracts.
Several of the club’s brightest talents emerging from the academy are up for new deals and face an uncertain future under the current terms of the operating license.
UK Government sanctions placed upon Chelsea owner Roman Abramovic prohibit the signing of new players and also negotiations to keep existing ones.
Manager Thomas Tuchel is not only concerned about the effects on the first team but right down the pyramid at Stamford Bridge.
England Under-17 World Cup winner George McEachran, 21, is a budding talent whose contract is about to expire having been at Chelsea since the age of eight.
Teenage midfielder Xavier Simons, 19, is one of the most highly-rated in the U23 squad and is also due to hold contract talks soon.
    Abramovich’s ‘blackmail and kidnap’ scandal
Roman Abramovich is said to have been part of a £2billion scam and had his wealth protected through blackmail and kidnap, a BBC Panorama investigation has found.
The Chelsea owner is reported to have made billions by buying an oil company from the Russian government in a rigged auction in the 90s.
Mr Abramovich paid around $250million for company Sibneft – but later sold it back to the Russian government for $13billion in 2005.
A document seen by the BBC claims the Russian government was cheated out of $2.7billion in the deal and adds Russian authorities even wanted to charge Roman Abramovich with fraud.
Yuri Skuratov, Russia’s former chief prosecutor, had investigated the deal involving Abramovich and Boris Berezovsky and their links to Boris Yeltsin, who was president at the time.
    Luk no further
Romelu Lukaku is reportedly wanted by Barcelona in a shock transfer should the LaLiga giants fail to land Erling Haaland.
Barca are eyeing a rebuild with club legend Xavi in charge and they have their sights set on signing a marquee forward.
Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland is Barca’s No1 transfer target but president Joan Laporta has ruled the club out of any deal that would put them ‘at any further risk.’
And according to Spanish outlet AS, Chelsea striker Lukaku is the fourth choice option behind Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski.
