Chelsea could sign Ousmane Dembele NEXT WEEK as PSG pull out, Conte ‘wants Lukaku at Spurs’, Kounde transfer update

CHELSEA have received a massive boost in their pursuit of Ousmane Dembele, who could reportedly join as soon as next week.Barcelona’s hopes of starting a bidding war for the winger are dead as new PSG sporting director Luis Campos is said to have vetoed a move for the French international.
And Barca are also said to be pessimistic of convincing the ex-Dortmund man to sign a new deal.
Meanwhile, Antonio Conte is said to be ready to make a surprise bid to lure Romelu Lukaku across London to Spurs.
And Chelsea are still keen on signing Jules Kounde, who Todd Boehly is reported to have told to ignore all other offers while the Blues secure the funds.

Chelsea’s summer window depends on Marina
Chelsea’s activity in the summer transfer window could largely depend on Marina Granovskaia’s future.
Journalist Gianluca Di Marzio spoke to wettfreunde about the transfer business the Blues could do under new owner Todd Boehly.
Di Marzio claims that Romelu Lukaku wants to return to Inter Milan after just a year at Stamford Bridge.
However, he admitted: “It’s not depending on him or Inter.
“I think it should be surprising if a club like Chelsea would let him go on a loan without any compensation.”
Any deal that sends Lukaku back to Serie A could largely depend on the future of Chelsea’s director Granovskaia.

Tomori to stay in Serie A
England defender Fikayo Tomori has absolutely no plans on leaving Serie A anytime soon.
The ex-Chelsea star has taken like a duck to water to Italian football – winning the league with AC Milan this season.
MilanNews.it report that Tomori and his entourage have already agreed to a contract extension.
It means a pay rise and a £2.5million-per-season net salary for the centre half, as well as an extension of that contract until 2027.
Uefa eye legal action against Madrid, Barca and Juve
UEFA chiefs are confident they will be cleared to take action against the remaining Super League rebels after a landmark legal case next month.
The European Court of Justice has announced it has scheduled a two-day hearing for the case accusing Uefa of “abuse of a dominant position” by blocking the creation of the breakaway competition.
Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus were backed by the Spanish capital’s “Mercantile Court” in what was seen by Uefa bosses as an “in-house” ruling.
That court’s judgement that Uefa had no right to impose any punishment on the three rebels was subsequently overturned by a higher court in Spain.
Uefa, though, made clear it would await the outcome of the trio’s ECJ case, which will now be heard in Luxembourg on July 11 and 12, before taking its next steps.
And with Judges indicating they will give an “expedited” verdict, Uefa’s Nyon hierarchy expect to get a legal win and the green light to go after the three clubs in a matter of weeks.
    Tammy eyeing Kane’s England spot
Tammy Abraham is ready to push skipper Harry Kane for his England place – amid links to Arsenal and Liverpool.
But Roma’s ex-Chelsea striker will also be happy to be understudy to the man who is eyeing England’s all-time scoring record.
Abraham said: “I think for every player that’s the mentality you’re supposed to have — to be positive.
“Of course, we are all buzzing for Harry, we want him to smash the record and we’re always here to support him.
“Whenever I’m given a chance if I’m on a pitch with him, I’ll try and help him to get to his targets.
“But for me, it’s all about whenever you get the opportunity, to just try and grab it with two hands and just show what you are made of.”
    Final Premier League table
Chelsea’s Premier League season felt like it ended months before the campaign actually concluded.
They dropped away from the title race towards the beginning of 2022 but always seemed too far away from those below to slip further down the table.

Chelsea midfielder Gallagher determined to improve
Ahead of England’s Nations League loss against Hungary last night, Conor Gallagher spoke to Chelsea’s official site about what he can do to improve next season.
He said: “I know what I’m good at and what I need to improve on so I’ll be focused on that.
“I feel like runs into the box I’m good at and I can win the ball back well and press well. I like to score goals and I want to score more.
“I can be more aware on the ball in deeper areas and have a better vision sometimes.
“There’s loads of things and I could go on for ages but I’m very determined to work hard and improve as a footballer still.”
Nkunku boost for Man Utd and Chelsea
RB Leipzig star Christopher Nkunku has revealed that he is ‘flattered’ by interest from a number of top clubs.
Chelsea, Manchester United and Paris-Saint Germain are rumoured to be keen on signing the £80million-rated star.
Nkunku told Telefoot: “It’s no secret. There are clubs interested in me.
“Yes it’s flattering, but it’s also flattering to have a club like Leipzig do everything to keep me as well.
“I’ll have to reflect and make a decision. The World Cup is on the way and that’s another factor to take into account.”
The attacking midfielder enjoyed an incredible season in Germany, scoring 35 goals and registering 20 assists in 52 matches.
    Dembele poised for Tuchel reunion
Chelsea are in pole position to sign Ousmane Dembele from Barcelona this summer, according to reports.
The Blues are set to be handed a huge transfer budget to spend in the upcoming window following Todd Boehly’s £4.25billion takeover.
Officials have already compiled a list of potential targets, with Dembele, 25, considered a top priority.
And according to the Mail, they are in the best position to complete the deal as fellow competitors PSG have withdrawn from the race.
The Parisians will focus on bolstering their midfield instead, so they are no longer considering a swoop for the Frenchman.
This acts as a huge boost for Chelsea and Thomas Tuchel, who is said to be thrilled by the prospect of a reunion.
    Chelsea set for mass exodus
Chelsea’s squad overhaul could lead to a £170million cash windfall, according to reports.
The Blues could be ready to sell the likes of back-up keeper Kepa, defenders Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta, while midfielders Jorginho and Ross Barkley have been linked with a move away.
The futures of Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner are also up for discussion, as new owner Todd Boehly looks to start a new revolution at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea target Nkunku coy on future
Chelsea target Christopher Nkunku will take his time when it comes to choosing his next destination.
The French attacker spoke while on international duty to French television broadcaster Telefoot about speculation linking him with a move away from Bundesliga giants RB Leipzig.
He said: “It’s no secret. There are clubs interested in me. Yes it’s flattering, but it’s also flattering to have a club like Leipzig do everything to keep me as well.
“I’ll have to reflect well and make a decision. The World Cup is on the way and that’s another factor to take into account.”
    Chelsea’s biggest earners
Romelu Lukaku has been linked with a move away from Chelsea this summer, less than one year after returning to Stamford Bridge.
If he is moved on then the Blues would have got rid of their top earner – as can be seen below…

    Conte wants Lukaku reunion
Romelu Lukaku has reportedly emerged as a key transfer target for Tottenham.
The striker, 29, is expected to leave Chelsea this summer – just one year after re-joining the club for an eyewatering £97.5million fee.
His form has been far from prolific this season, with 15 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions.
But he could be handed another chance in the Premier League as Tottenham have emerged as potential bidders.
According to Corriere Dello Sport, Antonio Conte will attempt to convince the Chelsea star to join Spurs.
    Blues legend to join board?
New Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is reportedly considering adding a former player to the club’s board.
Boehly led the consortium who purchased Chelsea for £4.25billion and he wants to reshape the hierarchy.
The Daily Mail are claiming that a former Chelsea player could be put in a position of power.
Blues legend Petr Cech is already working behind the scenes as a technical and performance advisor.
He is believed to have worked closely with director Marina Granovskaia and chairman Bruce Buck in helping to identify and complete transfers.
    Chelsea poised for Barcelona’s Dembele
Chelsea are said to be in pole position to sign Ousmane Dembele, according to reports.
Todd Boehly’s consortium completed their takeover on May 31 – and now they are looking at strengthening the Blues.
And talks are ongoing for the Barcelona ace, who is out of contract this summer and yet to agree a new deal.
According to talkSPORT, Chelsea are front of the queue to sign him.
    Kounde set for Chelsea transfer
Betfair have revealed the three most likely players to arrive at Stamford Bridge with Sevilla defender Jules Kounde the current bookies’ favourite.
The centre-back department appears to be slightly light after the exits of the duo and Sevilla’s Frenchman Jules Kounde has long been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.
Betfair are offering odds of 1/5 for the Blues to sign the 23-year-old this summer.
    Champions League seedings
Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham have been confirmed as SECOND seeds for this summer’s Champions League group stage draw.
The trio have all been regulars in Europe’s elite competition over the years.
But it has not saved them from dropping into Pot 2 for the draw which takes place on Thursday, August 25.
It means Chelsea, Liverpool and Spurs could face the likes of new continental kings Real Madrid, as well as Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain.

Juve close in on new De Ligt deal
Manchester United and Chelsea have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt as the Italian giants are reportedly close to agreeing a new deal.
The centre-back, 22, has a contract until 2024 with the Serie A club.
Speaking about his future, De Ligt said: “There are talks ongoing between me and Juventus.
“Once the right moment arrives, I will decide to extend or to look further.”
    Kimpembe a Chelsea target
Chelsea are looking at the possibility of bringing PSG defender Presnel Kimpembe to Stamford Bridge.
The French defender is awaiting a new contract with his club – after admitting he is desperate to stay.
And according to Goal, Kimpembe could be just the ticket for Thomas Tuchel.
The German manager is desperate for reinforcements after losing Antonio Rudiger to Real Madrid, with Andreas Christensen also expected to exit the club soon.
Chelsea interested in Leeds midfielder Phillips
Chelsea’s hunt for a midfielder could switch to Manchester United target Kalvin Phillips.
Leeds believe they are in a strong position to keep the 20-cap England ace, 26.
But after suggestions Newcastle would be prepared to offer £60million-plus, there are also reports that Chelsea could be pondering a bid.
The Red Devils were heavily linked with Phillips before the end of the season.
    Gilmour linked with Everton move
Billy Gilmour has been linked with a Premier League switch to Everton.
The Scotland star is heading into the final year of his Chelsea contract having been unable to solidify a first team spot.
He spent time on loan at relegated Norwich City last season, picking up valuable game time.
It was something he failed he do under Thomas Tuchel, despite a string of good performances under his predecessor Frank Lampard.
Now Blues legend Lampard wants to reunite with Gilmour at Goodison Park, talkSPORT says.
They say Everton have looked at the opportunity of luring Gilmour and young star Conor Gallagher.
    Premier League fixture announcement
The Premier League fixtures for next season will be announced at 9am on Thursday 16 June.
The season has been adjusted to accommodate the World Cup in Qatar 2022.
There will be a six-week break in the middle of the domestic season for the tournament.
    Man Utd move for Mount?
Mason Mount has been waiting on a new Chelsea contract “for months” amid interest from Manchester United.
According to Italian reporter Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea want to open contract talks with Mount “as soon as possible”.
The West Londoners view agreeing an extension as a “key move” this summer.
Romano adds that the situation isn’t “urgent”, however, as Mount’s current deal does still possess two more years.
New Man United boss Erik ten Hag is keen on the attacking midfielder.
The Red Devils’ interest has been noted by Mount’s camp, although sealing an improved deal at Stamford Bridge is likely to be the priority.
    Morning Chelsea fans

His form has been far from prolific this season, with 15 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions.
He has also fallen out-of-favour with many Chelsea fans.
But he could be handed another chance in the Premier League as Tottenham have emerged as potential bidders.
According to Corrire Dello Sport, Antonio Conte will attempt to convince the Chelsea star to join Spurs.

Betfair are offering odds of 1/5 for the Blues to sign the 23-year-old this summer.
Ousmane Dembele is another name who has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge.
The winger’s contract at Barcelona has come to an end, so would be available for free, despite the Spanish giants having paid £126m for him from Borussia Dortmund in 2017 – with Betfair giving out odds of 10/11.
Finally, Declan Rice has also been linked with a return to Stamford Bridge for a while, and Betfair are pricing the move to go through this summer at 7/2.

Transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio has revealed Gabriel Jesus would be perfect at Arsenal but that no Champions League football could be an issue.
He told wettfreunde: “I understand Gabriel Jesus wants to play more, wants to stay in a team that wants to have him as an important striker of the team.
“And Man City will have to sell players because they have to buy other players.
“If I have to choose for him, Arsenal would be perfect because Arsenal has a new project. They need to have a striker like him.
“They’re not playing the Champions League so this could be a problem for Gabriel Jesus.
“He is a Champions League player. He played very well in the Champions League with Man City.”
    Liverpool eye Barcelona midfielder Gavi
Liverpool are reportedly willing to meet Gavi’s release clause if he refuses to sign a new deal at Barcelona.
The teenager is believed to be negotiating a new contract at the Catalan giants with his deal expiring at the end of next season.
The contract saga has reportedly put Liverpool and Manchester United on alert.
According to Sport, Jurgen Klopp’s side would pay the £50million release clause to sign the central midfielder.
However it appears Liverpool’s hopes may be diminishing with the player rumoured to be close to committing his long-term future to Barca.
The club’s president Joan Laporta previously said to L’Esportiu: “Gavi’s agent has the new contract proposal on the table for a long time but he has not accepted yet.”
    Marseille ready to sell Kolasinac
Marseille are reportedly looking to offload former Arsenal left-back Sead Kolasinac just months after joining the Ligue 1 outfit.
The Gunners ripped up the 28-year-old’s contract in January to allow him to join the French club after being deemed as surplus to requirements by Mikel Arteta.
He penned a contract at Stade Velodrome until the summer of 2023, but he could now already be on the move.
Kolasinac appeared in 17 games in all competitions for Marseille, but didn’t complete the 90 minutes in any match.
And according to Foot Mercato, boss Jorge Sampaoli has been left unimpressed by his performances.
    Tottenham lead race for Spence
Tottenham are reportedly closing in on a deal for Middlesbrough right-back Djed Spence.
The 21-year-old recently enjoyed a successful loan spell with Nottingham Forest in the Championship.
He played an integral part in helping Steve Cooper’s side earn promotion to the Premier League for the first time in 23 years via the play-offs.
His outstanding form has attracted the attention of numerous clubs such as Brentford, Arsenal and even Bayern Munich.
Nottingham Forest are also attempting to strike a deal which will keep him at the club on a permanent basis.
But according to the Express, Tottenham are currently leading the transfer race for the star and will push ahead with an offer in the coming weeks.
    Man Utd target Eriksen
Christian Eriksen has emerged as a target for new Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag.
The Dutchman saw the Denmark star’s skills first hand when he trained with the Eredivisie giants, as he fought back to fitness following a cardiac arrest during the Euros.
And he must have been further impressed by his spell at Brentford – with the playmaker excelling during his six-month deal.
According to the Mirror, United have now entered the race for his signature.
    Tevez retirement eclipsed by Messi
It is somehow fitting that when Carlos Tevez announces his retirement, the news is overshadowed by Lionel Messi scoring five for Argentina.
The emergence of Messi had a profound effect on the career of Tevez.
Check out Tim Vickery’s piece below on the former Man Utd and Man City striker’s career and how it was eclipsed by fellow Argentine Messi.
    Bellerin keen for Betis move
Hector Bellerin wants to leave Arsenal and return to Real Betis permanently this summer, reports claim.
The 27-year-old played for the La Liga side on loan this season as they won the Copa del Rey.
And Bellerin want to make his move there permanent, claims journalist Fabrizio Romano.
He reports that the player has zero intentions of playing for the Gunners again.
However a transfer to Manuel Pellegrini’s side may prove difficult due to financial reasons.
Bellerin is a boyhood Real Betis fan and after playing his last home match at the club he was in tears on the pitch.
Liverpool join Man Utd in Nunez race
Liverpool have joined Manchester United in the race to sign Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, according to reports.
The Reds are chasing a forward this summer with Sadio Mane set to leave.
Boss Jurgen Klopp admires £68million-rated Nunez having seen his side come up against him in the Champions League last season.
According to The Times, Liverpool hold an interest in the 22-year-old but are not willing to break the bank to sign him.
Benfica are hoping to use interest in Nunez to spark a bidding war.
Nunez is believed to covet Champions League football next season which could hand Liverpool the edge over United.
Man Utd keen to secure De Jong
Manchester United are reportedly pushing on in their attempts to sign Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
The Dutchman has been heavily linked with a move away from the Nou Camp this summer.
And a reunion with new Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag has been muted, with Mundo Deportivo the latest to report a potential transfer.
However, the stumbling block remains De Jong’s desire to play in the Champions League.
Man Utd will play their European football in the Europa League next season.
    Jesus agrees terms with Arsenal
Arsenal have agreed terms with Manchester City forward Gabriel Jesus, according to reports.
The Brazilian has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates this summer.
And now Football Insider are reporting that Arsenal have agreed terms which would see Jesus secure a “major pay rise”.
A fee between the two clubs still needs to be agreed, but contact has been made by Arsenal.
Ronaldo’s choice to stay at United, says Santos
Portugal boss Fernando Santos says Cristiano Ronaldo’s future at Manchester United is “his choice”.
The 37-year-old is seemingly set to stay at Old Trafford this summer despite last season’s poor Premier League finish.
And Santos said: “I’ve said it many times, Cristiano is the best player in the world.
“The choice to stay at Manchester United is his choice, it’s not for me to say.
“It’s a personal choice. What I do know is that there are few who have the opportunity to play for Manchester United.”
    One of their own
Man Utd have sent scouts to watch Flamengo youngster Joao Gomes, according to reports.
The Red Devils are aiming to bolster their squad following the arrival of new boss Erik ten Hag.
Talent spotters were sent to Brazil to evaluate midfielder Joao Gomes.
But according to ESPN, scouts came away more impressed by one of United’s OWN players.
Andreas Pereira has spent the bulk of the last two years out on loan, first at Lazio and then at Flamengo.
He has impressed with the latter and is due back at United for pre-season next month.

    Morning football fans
Sadio Mane has hinted he may be about to snub Bayern Munich’s interest in favour of his boyhood club.
The forward has reinforced his love for Marseille in an interview after Senegal’s fixture against Benin.
Mane scored a hat-trick in his nation’s 3-1 win, and was predictably asked about his future at club level.
Departing Manchester United ace Nemanja Matic is close to a move to Jose Mourinho’s Roma.
Matic is set to leave United as a free agent once his contract expires on June 30 and he looks set to reunite with Mourinho for a THIRD time.
Raheem Sterling could run down his Manchester City contract to 2023 as Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham hover.
The England attacker wants more regular starts but champions City have just signed strikers Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez.
Etihad chiefs value Sterling at £60million but he’d go for free next summer if he declined a new deal.
City chiefs have held talks with the 27-year-old over a new contract.
But he’s reluctant to agree anything while he’s in and out of the side.
It’s also claimed the former Liverpool hero wants his weekly £300,000 pay increased.

    That is all from us!
That is all for tonight’s SunSport coverage of Wales 1-0 win against Ukraine.
That game had everything, it was action packed and saw Wales qualify for their first World Cup finals in 64 years!
Thank you for joining us tonight, we look forward to having you again!
    Qatar 2022
Wales have been drawn in Group B in the 2022 World Cup, which kicks off on November 21 with Senegal vs Netherlands and ends on December 18 with the final at the Lusail Iconic Stadium.
The Dragons will face England, Iran as well as the United States of America in the group stages and will be challenging for the first two places.
Wales’ World Cup campaign kicks off on November 21 against USA and continues four days later with their game against Iran.
Robert Page’s men are then set for a crucial encounter, which could determine their place in the Last 16, against England on November 29.
    How will they do?
    Bale delaying retirement
Wales hero Gareth Bale is delaying retirement thoughts as the ‘greatest result in Welsh football history’ sent the Dragons to the World Cup.
Skipper Bale’s deflected free-kick sunk Ukraine 1-0 in the play-off as Wales reached the finals for the first time since 1958 and the second occasion ever.
The ex-Spurs winger, 32, is leaving Real Madrid when his contract ends in July.
Championship side Cardiff or the MLS are possible destinations.
But having won the Champions League five times with Real, Bale revealed Wales’ triumph at Cardiff City Stadium on Sunday fulfilled his biggest remaining dream in football.
Sixteen years and 103 caps after his international debut, he told Sky Sports: “The result is the greatest in Welsh football history.
“We’re going to a World Cup! It means everything, what dreams are made of,
“We’ve been working towards it since I first came in here.
“Words can’t describe how we feel at the moment.”
    Tyler gaffe
Martin Tyler apologised for saying injured Ukraine keeper Heorhiy Bushchan would have to ‘soldier on’.
But saying sorry so swiftly failed to save the Sky Sports commentator from unforgiving comments on social media during Wales’ historic 1-0 win.
The Dragons reached the World Cup finals for the first time in 64 years despite many neutrals backing Ukraine due to Russia’s invasion of its neighbouring country.
And many fans cut Tyler little slack after his poor choice of words when Bushchan was floored by an ankle injury.
It’s the type of slip many pundits and fans must have made without even noticing since the war started in February.
But although Tyler was sharp enough to realise and apologise, he was instantly criticised on Twitter.
    Joe Allen lost for words
Wales midfielder Joe Allen thought the Dragons rode their luck in qualifying for Qatar.
He told Sky Sports: “It’s hard to put into words.
“We’ve been dreaming of this for a long time now.
“We’ve had to ride our luck at time, call on Wayne and defend for our lives, but let the celebrations begin.
“I’d love to say we were calm, it was tough, I got booked early on but I think we got it together.
“We’ve come a very long way, we want to make sure this carries on.
“The quality has gone through the roof, and a World Cup will be incredible to see.”
    Bale speaks
He was the man of the moment, contributing to the decisive goal that sent Wales to their first World Cup in 64 years.
And Gareth Bale has spoken of their incredible achievement.
He told BBC Sport: “It’s difficult to put it into words. It’s what we’ve been working all our careers for and to do this for the fans, the nation, ourselves and our families is an incredible achievement, and it will be something that we will be forever proud of.
“It means everything. It is the last piece of the jigsaw that we all wanted and we’re going to celebrate well tonight.”
    Ampadu delighted
Ethan Ampadu said Wales endured a tough test in the second half, and was relieved to get through.
“It was probably one of the toughest second halves that we’ve had, maybe the worst second half that we’ve had,” he told the BBC.
“But do you know what we can’t complain that we’re going to the World Cup, that’s all that matters.
“We are going to enjoy the time with the fans now and enjoy getting there.”
    Beers all around
Neco Williams shared a dressing room snap of himself with Gareth Bale in celebratory mood after Wales’ historic win.
The Welsh qualified for their first World Cup in 64 years by defeating Ukraine 1-0 in Cardiff.

And Williams was all smiles with Bale – posting a message and a snap on Twitter.
He wrote: “WE ARE GOING TO A WORLD CUP A DREAM COME TRUE WOW”, as he sank a bottle of beer.
    ‘Little Old Wales’
Aaron Ramsey couldn’t help but hide his joy with Wales qualifying for the World Cup.
In an emotional interview with Sky Sports at the final whistle, Ramsey spoke of qualification for Qater.
“It’s unbelievable, little old Wales in a World Cup! he said.
“To get to three major tournaments, and top it off with a World Cup is something else.”
    “My best game”
Wayne Hennessey spoke after the game and claimed it was his “Best game in a Wales shirt.”
It is hard to argue with the Welsh stopper, he was unbelievable today in between the sticks.
    SIR Gareth Bale, MBE
Gareth Bale became Sir Gareth Bale, MBE this week, in what was a great week for the Welshman.
He was awarded the MBE in the Queen’s birthday honours list, thanks to his contributions to football and charity.
If you were not aware, Bale made a £500,000 to the NHS during the pandemic, to help NHS staff in Wales.
In the same 24 hours, he also made a 500,000 euro contribution to the Spanish health service.
    Zinchenko calls for peace
Oleksandr Zinchenko has called for peace and unity in his homeland after Ukraine were beaten by Wales in the World Cup play off.
The Man City man was reduced to tears in Cardiff, following a 1-0 defeat that saw his side miss out on Qatar.
But in his post-match interview, Zinchenko put football to one side to talk about the war.
He said: “Everyone needs to live in peace. Today is Ukraine, but tomorrow Russian aggression can be with your country.”
    England will face Wales
Wales faced England in a major competition at EURO 2016, and it was a cracker.
Many, including myself were watching from school classrooms, as Daniel Sturridge grabbed a last minute winner after Gareth Bale scored another free kick in that one.
They will hope for similar fortunes this time round, but this is a stronger Wales opposition.

    High emotion
Referee Antonio Miguel Mateu Lahoz showed compassion towards Oleksandr Zinchenko as soon as the final whistle went.

Zinchenko, who has been the spokesperson for his country’s plight, was seen looking distraught on the pitch at the end of the game.
But the official was quick to console him.
Sometimes there are things bigger than football.
    Wicked Brennan Johnson
Brennan Johnson lit up the game when he came on as a substitute in the second half.
The Nottingham Forest man hit the post just after coming on, and can now add playing in the World Cup to his CV, alongside promotion to the Premier League with Nottingham Forest.
    Photo of the match
It is hard to go against this one, as Wales celebrate qualifying for the World Cup for the first time in 64 years.
Last time they qualified, they were knocked out by a 17-year-old Pele.
    Yes, Pele.

    World Cup group decided
Wales will join England, Iran and the USA in group B at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
You would expect they have a good chance of getting out of that group too, with the Welsh side more than strong enough to compete with USA and Iran on paper.
Do not be surprised if they throw up a shock against England too, as they almost did in EURO 2016…
    Incredi-Bale
Gareth Bale’s free kick is what proved to be the difference today, despite being deflected in by Andriy Yarmolenko.
He has been the difference maker for Wales so many times and it was the same old story today.
He was supported by so many of the others today, and credit must go not just to him, but the whole Wales squad who have been excellent leading up to this game, and once again today.

    Man of the match
It is unanimous at SunSport that the man of the match today was Wayne Hennessey for Wales.
The shot stopper put in the performance of his career tonight, and is largely responsible for their qualification.
Bale was excellent as he always is for his nation, but it is the GK who takes the plaudits today.
Who was your man of the match?

    Pain for Ukraine…
You have to feel for them, they put in a great, great performance today, but it just wouldn’t happen for them.
There are so many players in tears here in Wales, you can feel the passion pouring out of the Ukrainian players.
Huge credit should go to those Ukrainian players for even being in this game, let alone performing so well.
We stood with them before this game, and we will stand with them after it, they will be back.

Wales qualify for the World Cup!
What a campaign it has been, and what a game it has been too!
It is WALES who qualify for the World Cup, for the first time in 64 years.
    The dragon has ROARED!
    Desperate times
90+4. Mudryk receives a yellow card for a late challenge.
    Wales sub
90+3. Rhys Norrington-Davies comes on in replacement of Neco Williams.
The Liverpool man was excellent today.
    Yarmolenko looks for glory
90+3. Yarmolenko shifts the ball onto his right foot and blazes a shot over the bar.
Had that been his left you wouldn’t bet against him finding the top corner.
    FIVE added minutes
    90. There are five minutes of added time here in Wales.
    Ukraine are getting desperate now.

The national anthems are being sung, and then we will have kick off with you in just a few minutes.
    TEN minute warning
We have just 10 minutes before kick-off in this one, so grab some snacks and a drink, and settle in for a spectacular evening of football.
The stadium is rocking here in Wales.
    Have YOUR say.

    Gareth the GOAT
Wales have had some exceptional players down the years.
Giggs, Rush, Speed and so many more feature among their legends.
But none of them come close to Gareth Bale, he is a devastatingly good attacker, who has an eye for goal, and a big goal at that.
He scored two huge goals in the Semi-Final against Austria, including a stunning free kick, which was just a glimpse of his class.

    Zinner in an attacking role
It is well known amongst Manchester City players that Olexandr Zinchenko is one of the most technically gifted in their side.
Whilst we are used to seeing him play in the left-back position for the Cityzens, he is deployed in an attacking midfield role for his national side.
This is a position that he excels in, with his dynamism and technical ability crucial to the Ukrainians successes.
    Serious quality
Whilst the main focus of people’s attention on Ukraine is related to the war, the quality of their squad should not be forgotten.
They have serious players in their ranks, with the likes of Zinchenko, Yarmolenko, Malinovskyi and so many more who are capable of the extraordinary.

    More than football
Today is a huge occasion that cannot be understated, and Bill Shankly’s famous quote has never rang so true.
“Some people believe football is a matter of life and death, I am very disappointed with that attitude. I can assure you it is much, much more important than that.”
    Ukraine substitutes
Zubkov, Pyatov, Sydorchuk, Riznyk, Dovbyk, Shaparenko, Sobol, Mudryk, Bondar, Kacharaba, Pikhalyonok, Syrota.
    Ukraine Starting XI
Bushchan, Karavaev, Zabarnyi, Matvienko, Mykolenko, Stepanenko, Yarmolenko, Malinovskyi, Zinchenko, Tsygankov, Yaremchuk.
    64 Years of hurt
Wales have not appeared at the World Cup since 1958, when a 17-year-old Pele scored to knock them out in the quarter-finals.
    Yes, Pele was 17.
The Welsh people had to wait until EURO 2016 to reach another international tournament, in which they impressively reached the Semi-Finals, and lost to eventual winners Portugal.

    Wales substitutes
Ward, Davies, Gunter, Mepham, Wilson, Johnson, Morrell, Norrington-Davies, Williams, Harris, Thomas, Matondo.
Wales Starting XI – Bale starts
Hennessey, Ampadu, Rodon, Davies, Roberts, Allen, Ramsey, Williams, James, Bale, Moore.
    Written in the stars?
Today Ukraine will be aiming to slay the Welsh dragon in this play-off final, and they will have the world of football cheering them on.
After what they have been through this year, it would be poetic for them to secure their place in the World Cup.
They definitely have a talented enough squad to be a part of the competition, and showed their class in their recent 3-1 win against Scotland.
Wales, however, have a great squad of their own, and it is impossible to write off Gareth Bale and his heroics.

    Pique retirement hope
Barcelona are hoping Gerard Pique will announce his retirement next summer to save them money following his shock split with Shakira.
That’s according to RAC1, who claim Barca would prefer it if Pique rolled credits on his celebrated career in 2023 to save themselves €80million (£70m) in wages over the next two seasons.
The centre-back has a contract with the Blaugrana that runs until 2024 and is one of the club’s highest-paid players.
But the 35-year-old has deferred his salary multiple times in the last three years to help his financially-stricken team cope with the economic impact of COVID-19.
The former Spain international was also one of the first Barcelona players to take a pay-cut, which helped the Catalan giants register new signings.
This comes after Pique’s 11-year relationship with Shakira came to an end after the pop star announced their separation.
    Gavi’s Barça deal
Gavi is widely-regarded as one of Europe’s most talented youngsters having burst onto the scene during the 2021-22 season.
He chipped in with two goals and six assists in 47 games in all competitions, with his stunning form seeing him become Spain’s youngest ever international.
But with his contract at the Camp Nou to expire in 2023, the midfielder has been linked with a move away from Catalonia.
Manchester United are known to be admirers of the youngster as Erik ten Hag looks to bolster his midfield.
Richarlison and Vinicius Jr scrap in training
Brazil team-mates Richarlison and Vinicius Jr has to be SEPARATED during training following a heated altercation.
The pair almost came to blows on Saturday during a training session ahead of the Selacao’s friendly with Japan on Monday.
But their intervention appeared to further enrage Richarlison, who grimaced as Neymar put his hands around his neck.
Cooler heads eventually prevailed after the pair were dragged apart and went their separate ways.

Exclusive – Rangers want £5m Tymon from Stoke
Rangers are keen to sign Stoke City’s raiding left-back Josh Tymon – but may have to wait, writes Alan Nixon.
The Scottish giants are planning improvements to their side after reaching the Europa League final and Tymon, 23, is high on the list.
However, Rangers will have to either sell Borna Barisic or qualify for the Champions League group stages to fund the deal.
Stoke will want around £5million for Tymon, who has come good after signing as a teenager from Hull City.
    Prem fixture release date
The Premier League 2022/23 fixtures will be announced at 9am on Thursday 16 June.
The season has been adjusted to accommodate the World Cup in Qatar 2022.
There will be a six week break in the middle of the domestic calendar for the global showpiece.
Jesus projected salary would be joint highest at the club
Arsenal are ready to offer Gabriel Jesus nearly £200,000-a-week to try and tempt him to join.
The Brazilian striker is currently on international duty, but Manchester City bosses plan to speak to his representatives over the next few days.
And even though the Gunners missed out on Champions League football on the final day, the City forward is still interested in a potential move to the Emirates.
The wedge would match the weekly salary of defensive midfielder Thomas Partey.
    Milan and Juve after Pulisic
Amid reports that Liverpool are after Christian Pulisic, Serie A giants continue their chase.
The 23-year-old has reportedly sparked the interest of champions AC Milan, with powerhouse Juventus also rumoured to be interested in his services.
Currently away on international duty with the USA, Pulisic admitted his frustration at the lack of game time at the Blues.
Chelsea signed the American for £58million from Borussia Dortmund, however it’s speculated neither interested Italian side would be able to match that fee if the Blues wanted him.
Pulisic wanted by Liverpool as Mane replacement
Christian Falk at BILD Sport claims that Liverpool are interested in Christian Pulisic “as replacement for Sadio Mane”.
The American has struggled to cement a starting place under Thomas Tuchel, leaving the winger frustrated in West London.
Whilst on international duty this week, Pulisic said: “Of course, I want to get more playing time. I think I still got a lot of games, but it’s always something that I’m working at and trying to be a regular at club level. “
Exclusive – Newcastle will have to pay £50m to seal Ake transfer
Newcastle have been told to splash out £50million if they want to sign Nathan Ake from Manchester City, writes Phil Thomas.
Eddie Howe wanted the centre-back in January and has identified him as a transfer target once again this summer.
The Toon boss has made a second inquiry about Ake after City gave him short shrift when he first asked in January.
The Dutch defender obviously knows Howe well, having spent four years under him at Bournemouth, before moving to the Etihad for £40m in 2020.
Although Ruben Dias, Aymeric Laporte and John Stones are ahead of him in the pecking order, City would still want an increase on the money they paid two years ago.
Tammy pushing Kane for England spot
    De Ligt up the world
Manchester United and Chelsea have been dealt a potential blow with Matthijs de Ligt reportedly close to signing a new contract with Juventus.
The centre-back, 22, has a deal until 2024 with the Turin club.
De Ligt said: “There are talks ongoing between me and Juventus.
“Once the right moment arrives, I will decide to extend or to look further.”
    Forest ready for Pope bid
Nottingham Forest are ready to try their luck with a low bid for Burnley’s England keeper Nick Pope, writes ALAN NIXON.
The Premier League new- boys want the impressive shot-stopper, who is keen to stay in the top flight after the Clarets dropped down.
Pope, 30, is valued at £40million and also fancied by promoted Fulham but neither of the outfits plan to go to that figure for their target.
Sources close to Pope think they can force through a deal at closer to £10m but that is being laughed off at Turf Moor.
But a compromise figure could be reached in the coming weeks.
Liverpool ‘want Raphinha from Leeds for £60m’
Liverpool are prepared to pay Leeds United £60million PLUS Takumi Minamino in order to land Brazilian Raphinha, according to reports.
Jurgen Klopp is a massive fan of the pacey winger, and wants to bring him to Anfield to compensate for the expected loss of Sadio Mane.
Raphinha scored 11 goals and provided three assists as Leeds barely avoided relegation from the Premier League – only securing their safety thanks to a 2-1 victory over Brentford on the final day.
The 25-year-old is also wanted by Barcelona, but their tricky financial situation means they must sell before they can buy, whereas Liverpool have far more freedom in their budget.
However, according to the Mirror, The Reds believe including Minamino as a part of a cash-plus-player transfer offer could be a deal-breaker for Leeds.
The Whites are looking to rebuild their beleaguered squad this summer, and while losing Raphinha would no doubt be a massive loss, a major player-plus-cash deal such as this would ease much of their woes.
    Woodman wanted by Preston
Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman is wanted on loan by Ryan Lowe’s Preston.
Woodman, 25, is back from a spell at Bournemouth, where he had to sit on the bench.
After starting all of the Magpies’ first four games of the Premier League season, a hip injury put the keeper out of action.
And after heading to the South coast, Woodman was disappointed not to get a minute of Championship action.

Now North End are keen to take him — although that would mean them having to guarantee him game time to get approval from the Toon.
Boss Lowe’s assistant Mike Marsh worked with Woodman at Swansea which could be a contributing factor.
Preston are also in talks with Dundee United’s keeper Benjamin Siegrist.
    Matondo open to Prem move
Rabbi Matondo has opened the door to a return to English football this summer.
Premier League newboys Fulham and Bournemouth as well as Scottish giants Rangers have all been linked with the 21-year-old Welsh forward.
Schalke’s Matondo spent last season on loan at Belgian club Cercle Brugge but an agreement on a permanent deal could not be reached.
But Matondo, in the Wales squad for today’s World Cup play-off final, said: “There’s always an appeal to be playing football in England.
“I grew up in the United Kingdom and, one day, if the opportunity is right, this summer or whenever, I’m open to it.
“As things stand, I’m a Schalke player. I’m here with Wales and whatever is getting done by my agent and family, we’ll see what happens.”
Ex-Manchester City trainee Matondo scored nine goals in 26 games in Belgium last term.
    Barca make vow with Salah
Barcelona have promised Liverpool superstar Mo Salah they will sign him next summer on a free transfer when his contract runs out, according to reports.
Salah, 29, has one year left on his current Anfield deal, and talks have stalled over a new contract.
And the Spanish giants have reportedly promised him a huge deal in 12 months’ time if he runs down his contract and walks away for nothing.
The Egyptian King wants a 15 per cent increase to his current deal – currently worth around £200,000-a-week.
Barcelona boss Xavi is rebuilding the side for an assault on the LaLiga title next season, with Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski his top summer target.
But he is also planning ahead, and wants Salah to join in a year’s time, according the The Mirror.
The report also states that Barcelona’s interest is a major factor in Salah’s reluctance to extend his five-year stay at Liverpool, who last weekend lost the Champions League final to Real Madrid.
Exclusive – West Brom want Choudhury on loan
Leicester will let midfielder Hamza Choudhury leave on loan.
Choudhury, 24, needs game time and West Brom boss Steve Bruce is keen to take him on loan after trying to take the Foxes player to Newcastle.
There could be a sale if an offer comes in but Baggies may be able to do a loan deal with a fixed fee should they win promotion to the top flight.
The midfielder only played in six Premier League games last season and had a handful of substitute appearances in Europe.
    Foxes keen on £20m Diop
Leicester are pondering a move for Monaco left winger Sofiane Diop, who is available for around £20million.
Frenchman Diop, 21, who qualifies for Senegal, has emerged as one of the best prospects in Ligue 1 this season.
But at least his £80,000-a-week salary will not be an issue for Newcastle, even if keeping up his regular flow of winners’ medals – two titles and a League Cup so far – may be.
And although Pep Guardiola doesn’t want to lose the centre back, City won’t stand in his way if he does decide he wants to move, given it will mean regular first-team football.
    Overnight transfer talk
Gabriel Jesus and Ousmane Dembele could be heading to London – but for the time being Declan Rice looks unlikely to leave the capital.
Arsenal are prepared to pay Brazil striker Jesus £190,000 a week plus bonuses – way above his Manchester City wage of £110k.
Chelsea have emerged as favourites to sign ex-Gunners and Manchester United target Dembele from Barcelona.
The France winger, 25, is also wanted by PSG.
But it’s claimed Barca have offered Arsenal and Tottenham the chance to borrow centre-back Clement Lenglet.
But West Ham reportedly rate England midfielder Rice at £150million as they fight to ward off Chelsea and the Red Devils.
RB Leipzig midfielder Christopher Nkunku says PSG are his ‘heart club’ – another blow for the Blues and United.
Nottingham Forest are dreaming of capturing Old Trafford midfielder James Garner for a THIRD spell – and this time not necessarily on loan.
And Chelsea striker Christian Pulisic is being talked out in some quarters as a replacement for Sadio Mane if Liverpool fail to keep the Senegal hitman.
    Forest in cheeky Pope bid
Burnley will sell at the right price and boss Vincent Kompany would ask old club Manchester City for Arijanet Muric, 23.
The Kosovo international, who had a loan spell at Forest in 2019-20, was in Turkey on loan last season and Kompany rates him highly.
    Forest launch ANOTHER Garner bid
Nottingham Forest want Manchester United midfielder James Garner for a THIRD time, writes ALAN NIXON.
Promoted Forest Reds would be happy with another loan – or a permanent deal – after Garner’s key role this term.
For now, the 21-year-old is going back to United and will definitely be in Erik ten Hag’s squad when pre-season training and games begin.
But Forest are optimistic that they lead the queue for Garner but that will mean waiting for an answer and possibly starting the season without him.
Boss Steve Cooper will need to shelve moves for alternatives until that point but Forest may be willing to take that gamble.
Tammy pushing Kane… – but will pull for him too
Tammy Abraham is ready to push skipper Harry Kane for his England place – amid links to Arsenal and Liverpool.
But Roma’s ex-Chelsea striker will also be happy to be understudy to the man who is eyeing England’s all-time scoring record.
Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate challenged Abraham, 24, to prove he is the right striker to put the pressure on 49-goal Kane to keep on delivering as he chases Wayne Rooney’s record mark of 53 — or even replace him.
City want £50m for Toon target Ake
Manchester City want £50million for Newcastle target Nathan Ake.
The 26-cap Holland centre-back, 27, played under Toon boss Eddie Howe at Bournemouth.
Tevez quits playing after dad’s death
Carlos Tevez has retired from playing because he could not cope with the loss of his No 1 fan — his dad.
The ex-United, Manchester City and West Ham striker, 38, quit boyhood club Boca Juniors last June after the death of his adopted father Segundo Raimundo, who contracted Covid.
The Argentine has not played since and revealed he turned down offers from the MLS.
Tevez said: “I stopped playing because I lost my No 1 fan. I’ve been offered many things — but that’s it, I have given everything.”

    Timber told to snub Utd
Daley Blind hopes ‘unbelievable’ Ajax team-mate Jurrien Timber rejects Manchester United this summer.
Former Old Trafford midfielder Blind also urged the Dutch champions to fight to keep the centre-back.
Reports in Holland suggest Ajax are increasingly confident 20-year-old Timber will stay.
And having played alongside him for club and country since 2021, Blind rates the 20-year-old as one of the world’s most promising defenders.
The Dutch anchorman, 32, said: “He is wise enough to make his own choices.
“What he shows from the start though is unbelievable.
“Of course, as a teammate, I hope he stays for another year. I cannot influence that.
‘”I can only say that Ajax must do its best to keep him.”
    Gavi blow
Gavi is widely-regarded as one of Europe’s most talented youngsters having burst onto the scene during the 2021-22 season.
He chipped in with two goals and six assists in 47 games in all competitions, with his stunning form seeing him become Spain’s youngest ever international.
But with his contract at the Nou Camp to expire in 2023, the midfielder has been linked with a move away from Catalonia.
Manchester United are known to be admirers of the youngster as Erik ten Hag looks to bolster his midfield.
    Chelsea want Phillips too
Chelsea’s hunt for a midfielder could switch to Manchester United ‘target’ Kalvin Phillips.
Leeds believe they are in a strong position to keep the 20-cap England ace, 26.

The Red Devils were heavily linked with Phillips before the end of the season.
    Prem fixture release date
The Premier League 2022/23 fixtures will be announced at 9am on Thursday 16 June.
The season has been adjusted to accommodate the World Cup in Qatar 2022.
There will be a six week break in the middle of the domestic calendar for the global showpiece.
Van the man for Ten Hag
Donny van de Beek will be in new Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag’s plans next season, writes Tony Robertson.
Van de Beek, 25, joined United from Ajax in the summer of 2020 but failed to settle and claim a position in the team.
The Dutchman was given only sparing minutes by former United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who preferred to utilise Bruno Fernandes in the number 10 position.
He wasn’t afforded the opportunity to play in a deeper role by the former United striker either, with Scott McTominay and Fred being preferred in a double pivot.
The playmaker was also not seen as a part of Ralf Rangnick’s plans at Old Trafford when he took over on an interim basis – instead allowing him to go out on loan to Everton for the rest of the season.
COMMENT: Pogba should have been a Cantona or Henry
IF the average Manchester United fan had three words to sum up Paul Pogba’s second coming at Old Trafford, most would be unprintable, writes PHIL THOMAS.
“An absolute waste” or “what a disaster” would be among the milder responses. But in the main, you’d end up wearing out the asterisk key.

Yet the briefest, and most cuttingly pointed, of epitaphs to bid the Frenchman farewell is this… “on his day”.
Hardly the most insulting of phrases. Indeed, related to most footballers, usually it means the total opposite.
Only Pogba isn’t most footballers. Pogba is as talented a player as there is, in any position, on any continent, in any era. Yet only on his day.
We should be mentioning his name in similar terms to the likes of Eric Cantona and Thierry Henry, or Sergio Aguero and Didier Drogba.
Only we won’t. Pogba will say farewell to the Prem as a flop. As a failure. An ‘if only’ kind of guy.

    “New Sheriff” in town
Erik ten Hag has reportedly been called the “New Sheriff” by members of staff at Old Trafford.

Let’s hope he can enforce a bit more order around the place than the last boss…
    De Ligt up the world
Manchester United and Chelsea have been dealt a potential blow with Matthijs de Ligt reportedly close to signing a new contract with Juventus.
The centre-back, 22, has a deal until 2024 with the Turin club.
De Ligt said: “There are talks ongoing between me and Juventus.
“Once the right moment arrives, I will decide to extend or to look further.”
Ronaldo claims Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year
Cristiano Ronaldo, 37, also won the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award.
It is an award voted by United fans across the globe.

Most Sir Matt Busby awards in club history:
4 : Cristiano Ronaldo, David de Gea.
2 : Ruud van Nistelrooy, Wayne Rooney, Brian McClair, Eric Cantona, Roy Keane.
Ronaldo wins goal of the season
Cristiano Ronaldo has won the Goal of the Season award for his strike against Tottenham in March.
Ronaldo, 37, showed an NFL legend who was the “MVP” that day.
Seven-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady came to Old Trafford, billing the match as a showdown between his pal and gridiron fan, Harry Kane, and Cristiano Ronaldo.

    Rice ‘would cost £150m’
West Ham hope to scare off Manchester United and Chelsea by valuing Declan Rice at £150million, reports suggest.
The England midfielder is the world-class anchorman United lack.
But he has hinted in the past year he’s happy to stay in London.
And although Chelsea have bounced back into the transfer market with Todd Boehly’s takeover, the Hammers are confident they can keep the 23-year-old for at least another season.

Boss Steve Cooper will need to shelve moves for alternatives until that point but Forest may be willing to take that gamble.
De Gea tipped to skipper United
EXCLUSIVE: David de Gea is hot favourite to get the captain’s job at Manchester United ahead of Harry Maguire, writes PHIL THOMAS.
New boss Erik ten Hag told sources he would be happy for the dressing room to choose who wears the armband when they return to Carrington at the end of this month.
And insiders insist that goalkeeper De Gea will be the overwhelming choice among the first-team squad.
They claim that it is not so much a “rebellion” against the current skipper Maguire, as a show of faith in how much respect and belief they hold in the 31-year-old Spaniard.
    Rice ‘would cost £150m’
West Ham hope to scare off Manchester United and Chelsea by valuing Declan Rice at £150million, reports suggest.
The England midfielder is the world-class anchorman United lack.

‘Huge Utd bid for Nunez rejected’
Manchester United have reportedly had an £81million bid for Benfica striker Darwin Nunez rebuffed.
It’s claimed the Portuguese giants have told the Red Devils to offer more for the Uruguay superstar, 22.
Correio de Manha say Benfica turned down a package of £64m up front plus £17m bonuses.
United’s Brazil midfielder Andreas Pereira, 26, who is currently on loan with home country club Flamengo, was said to have been part of the offer.
    Morning, United fans
Declan Rice, Christopher Nkunku and Darwin Nunez are all in the Old Trafford transfer loop this morning.
But it could be tougher than ever to land any of them as new United boss Erik ten Hag prepares for his summer revamp.
West Ham are reportedly valuing England midfielder Rice at £150million to deter the Red Devils and Chelsea.
And it’s claimed Benfica have rejected an £81m bid from United for Uruguay striker Nunez, 22.
But the talk last night was that the Portuguese giants might consider an increased offer.
Correio de Manha say Benfica turned down a deal worth £64m up front plus £17m bonuses – with United midfielder Andreas Pereira thought to be part of that package.
Meanwhile, RB Leipzig hero Nkunku revealed PSG is his ‘heart club’.
But the France midfielder won’t ‘close the door’ on other admirers like United and Chelsea.
Nottingham Forest want Red Devils’ midfielder James Garner for a THIRD time.
For now, though, the England Under-21 playmaker will be plunged into United’s first-team squad following his second brilliant loan spell.
Finally, keeper David de Gea is hot favourite to become United’s new skipper.
Pogba should have been a Cantona or Henry
COMMENT: IF the average Manchester United fan had three words to sum up Paul Pogba’s second coming at Old Trafford, most would be unprintable, writes PHIL THOMAS.

If Kevin de Bruyne, Mo Salah, Harry Kane, Sadio Mane or Phil Foden have a shocker it stands out because it’s so rare.
But for Pogba it’s hard to come up with a single OUTSTANDING performance.
Even the most die-hard United fan would struggle to go beyond the second half of a Pogba-inspired Manchester derby comeback and a goal-scoring Europa League final against a still-developing Ajax side.

New boss Erik ten Hag told sources he would be happy for the dressing room to choose who wears the armband when they return to Carrington at the end of this month.

They claim that it is not so much a “rebellion” against the current skipper Maguire, as a show of faith in how much respect and belief they hold in the 31-year-old Spaniard.
Ex-boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer surprised some when he named Maguire captain within six months of his arrival from Leicester after Ashley Young left for Inter Milan.
The England centre-back, 29, is hugely proud of having the job, but some inside the club feel it is an unfair burden and could even have impacted on his form.
Cristiano Ronaldo will also be in the running, yet Carrington sources insist De Gea is the one who can do most to heal a fractured dressing room.
The Spain keeper became increasingly outspoken towards the end of last season as results went from bad to worse under interim chief Ralf Rangnick.
De Gea also impressed both team-mates and coaches by returning to training early last summer to regain the job from Dean Henderson — favourite to be last year’s first choice.
He has a year left on his £375,000-a-week contract, with United also holding a further 12-month option.
Yet Old Trafford bosses believe he still has many more years at the peak of his powers and feel having the captain’s job could even sway him into finishing his career at the club.
    Nkunku blow for Prem giants
Christopher Nkunku has disappointed Prem giants by suggesting PSG is his ‘heart club’.
RB Leipzig’s France midfielder has been linked with Manchester United and Chelsea.
And the 24-year-old insists he won’t ‘close any doors’ on his options.
But he said: “Paris [Paris Saint-Germain], I’ve always said it, it’s my home, my heart club.
“I don’t close any doors. Everything is possible in football.
“It’s flattering to have the biggest clubs in the world interested in me.
“But it’s also flattering that Leipzig is doing everything to keep me.
“We are in June, and I am focused on this gathering.”
Blues linked to shock Kalvin move
Chelsea’s hunt for a midfielder could switch to Manchester United ‘target’ Kalvin Phillips.

Abraham said: “I think for every player that’s the mentality you’re supposed to have — to be positive.
“Of course, we are all buzzing for Harry, we want him to smash the record and we’re always here to support him.
