Red Devils struggling to offload Martial and Bailly
EXCLUSIVE: Manchester United are having a nightmare trying to find a buyer for Anthony Martial due to his sky-high wages, writes NEIL CUSTIS.
United are ready to accept a big hit on the £38.5million they paid for him with offers of around £20million ready to be heard.
But the Frenchman’s £240,000-a-week wages are proving a massive stumbling block to any move with no club prepared to match that.

Martial still has two years left on that deal which means United may have to agree to a pay off to get him out of Old Trafford.
Sevilla in La Liga showed interest last season when they took him on a fourth month loan in the second-half of last season.
But the frontman flopped and he will return for pre-season training at Carrington on Monday.
United are also actively trying to find a buyer for centre-back Eric Bailly having offered him to Newcastle United – but that was met with a lukewarm response.
Having signed a new contract in April 2021 he still has two years left of his current contract.
As with Martial, United are ready to take a hit on the 28-year-old with an asking price of just £8.5million for a player who costs them £30million from Villarreal in 2016.

Bild say he is already one of the top earners at the Bundesliga club.
But they report he is keen to boost his wages to about £6m-per-year – and that is ‘peanuts’ to money-bag Magpies.
The German newspaper also point out Hazard will face competition for his spot next season from the likes of Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, 17, Gio Reyna, 19, and new recruit Karem Adeyemi, 20.
    Foxy move to avoid carnival
Leicester’s Premier League opener against Brentford has been  moved back by a day – to avoid a clash with the city’s Caribbean Carnival.
The Foxes were due to kick-off their campaign with a home fixture against the Bees at 3pm on Saturday, just two hours after the Carnival’s 1pm start.
That would have been a logistics nightmare with up to 80,000 people expected to attend the Carnival, which has returned after a three year absence due to Covid concerns.

“The last part was nice but obviously the very first part I was stuck in a DRS train and couldn’t do anything. Then in the middle part of the race I found myself stuck behind Esteban [Ocon] on much newer tyres so he had very good traction and that was enough to keep me behind.
“Then we had a slow pit stop and fell behind another DRS train, but the end was quite fun. I had to be aggressive to get more points and fifth is the best we could manage today.
“Overall the feeling was good and that’s a good sign. Whether it would have been enough to Red Bull today I don’t know, but it has been close all season and I felt like Carlos [Sainz] was quite strong today. This shows that it would have been close.”
    Sainz reacts
Carlos Sainz is pleased with his second-placed finish.
He reacted: “I can tell I didn’t leave anything on the table today. I was the fastest car today – it was very difficult to mount an overtake on the RB. I gave my maximum.
“We tried our best and as a team we executed the race.”
    Winners and Losers
Red Bull are obviously the big winners from the Canadian Grand Prix with Verstappen clocking up another victory, but it is not a faultless win.
Sergio Perez’s retirement due to a suspected gearbox issue suggests gremlins remain in their car, an issue that was prevalent early in the season.
It’s a great day for Mercedes who showed a marked step forward, and Ferrari will be happy to have both cars finishing and both making up positions, even if they’ve fallen further behind Red Bull.
Meanwhile, Haas’ day unraveled from the first lap as Magnussen sustained front wing damage which caused him to lose time and pit early, while a competitive-looking Mick Schumacher lost out on the chance of points due to a mechanical issue.
It was an equally bad day over at Alpha Tauri, as Yuki Tsunoda left the pits to drive into the wall while Gasly had mechanical issues from early on and never really got going.
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff reacts to the race
“Within the team, [Hamilton] was always positive in the mindset. It’s astonishing. I’m happy for Lewis as he had bad luck on his side and would have been on the podium if not for the safety car a couple of times.
[On whether Mercedes can win at the next race at Silverstone] “If we can run the car low, we should be competitive.”
    Making a point at home
Lance Stroll sneaked in 10th with a late overtake over Daniel Ricciardo, gaining a point in his home race.

    Top step of the podium
Verstappen listens to the national anthems at the top step of the podium, with this win being his 5th win in six races.
It’s also Red Bull’s sixth race win in a row.
With Perez retiring early on and Leclerc only making his way up to 5th, this now firmly seems like Verstappen’s title to lose.
    Preparing for the podium
Verstappen, Sainz and Hamilton are chatting in the cool-down room with F1 boss Stefano Domenicali.
They all seem to be in good spirits, with the result particularly good for Verstappen and Hamilton who both stopped under the first virtual safety car, which now clearly seemed to be the best strategy. This race also marks the first time Hamilton has finished above his teammate Russell since the opening race.
As for Carlos Sainz, this is his 5th-second place finish in F1 but he is yet to win a race. Today seems like a missed opportunity.
Hamilton on his 3rd place finish
“We’ve had such an awesome crowd here this weekend. It’s quite overwhelming to get this 3rd place this weekend but we continue to be vigilant and not give up so thank you to the team and everyone back at the factory.
“We just have to keep pushing and hopefully we can be up there with them [Ferrari and Red Bull].
“Our pace was quite good, especially in the second phase so honestly I’m ecstatic. I didn’t expect [a podium] coming back this week. I love it in Montreal.”
    Verstappen reacts
“The safety car didn’t help. Overall [Ferrari] were really quick but yeah it was really exciting at the end. I was giving it everything I had and so was Carlos. The last few laps were very fun.
“Luckily this year we seem really quick on the straights so that helps.”
    What a win
Verstappen really had to fight for that one after the safety car restart.

    Best of the rest
George Russell comes home 4th, meaning he continues his incredible run of top 5 finishes in every single race this season.
Charles Leclerc’s recovery drive takes him from 19th to 5th, with Ocon and Alonso coming home 6th and 7th. Disappointing for Alonso who started 2nd.
Bottas and Zhou come home to finish 8th and 9th in a double-points finish for Alfa Romeo.
MAX VERSTAPPEN WINS THE CANADIAN GRAND PRIX!
The Red Bull driver holds off Sainz who takes second place.
Hamilton on the podium for the first time since the opening race in Bahrain.
    Lap 69/70
Sainz was closer than ever to Verstappen on lap 68, but he still couldn’t get close enough.
He has two more laps to try and claim his first F1 win.
    Lap 67/70
Twice in history the Canadian Grand Prix has been settled on the final lap, with Nelson Piquet victorious right at the end of the 1991 race and Jenson Button famously getting past Vettel when made a mistake.
Could the same thing happen today? Sainz is still stuck less than a second behind Verstappen.
Meanwhile its Alpine v Alfa Romeo in the battle for 6th, with Ocon leading Alonso who leads Bottas and Zhou.
    Lap 64/70
Edge of your seat stuff at the front of the grid

    Lap 63/70
Verstappen has managed to pull out of the DRS range of Sainz, who may have missed his best opportunity to take the lead off the Red Bull.
Sainz needs to pull something special out of the bag – or hope Max makes an uncharacteristic mistake – to win this one.
    Lap 61/70
Sainz just won’t let go. He remains so, so close to Verstappen, who is looking for his 26th win in F1. Sainz is still looking for his first.
On his fresh tyres and with DRS, Sainz may just have enough pace to take the lead or try and force the Dutchman into a mistake.
    Lap 60/70
Sainz is hunting down Verstappen! Every lap the Ferrari is within DRS range of the Red Bull, with the Dutchman unable to pull away on his holder tyres.
This one could well go down the wire.
Meanwhile the other Ferrari of Charles Leclerc has passed Alonso for 6th, and is now trying to get past the other Alpine of Ocon for 5th.
    Lap 57/70
Verstappen has a good safety car restart, and manages to keep clear of Sainz, with Hamilton and Russell close behind. There’s only around four seconds covering the top 4, with Verstappen not yet able to pull away.
No movement in the rest of the field either, although Guanyu tried unsuccessfully to put a move on Vettel.
    Lap 54/70
Safety car in at the end of this lap! We are ready to go with the final 15 laps of this Canadian Grand Prix, and you don’t want to miss the ending to this one.
    Lap 52/70 – Safety Car
So Yuki Tsunoda’s crash after leaving the pits has triggered the full safety car, the third intervention of this race after we earlier got two virtual safety cars.
Sainz may well feel he has nothing to lose and everything to prove as he prepares to gun for Verstappen at the rolling restart.
How racy will George Russell be feeling behind his teammate Lewis Hamilton? The Mercedes pair have previously had a great scrap in Miami after the safety car on that occasion.
Then we have two Alpines in 5th and 6th, with Leclerc keen to make up positions from 7th.
We have a wonderful script for the closing laps of this Canadian Grand Prix.
    Lap 50/70 – Safety car
Sainz pits under the safety car, with Verstappen re-taking the lead but Sainz now on fresher tyres. The restart could be very interesting to watch.
Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso are pitting from 5th and 6th respectively under the safety car, with Bottas finally pitting for the first time.
    Lap 49/70
Tsuonda has hit the wall at turn 1! We have a safety car, and this could be massive for the race!

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc will start from the back of the grid as a result of an excessive engine usage penalty.

Follow ALL the action from Montreal with our live blog below…
    Hamilton buoyant
Lewis Hamilton pulled off his best qualifying of the year and will start in fourth place, writes BEN HUNT.
The seven-times world champion, who has been plagued by back problems caused by his bouncing Mercedes, looked to have done the unthinkable with an excellent first attempt in Montreal that was good enough for provisional second place.
However, despite being eventually bumped down to fourth place, he hailed his achievement in the wet as his best of the season.
He said: “This past week has been a real challenge and every day working through the pain and getting my body right.
“We are still struggling with the car, so to get top four in those conditions is awesome.
“It is my best qualifying this season and feels similar to my first-ever qualifying in Australia in 2007, I was so excited.”
    Alonso thrilled with second place
Fernando Alonso hailed his shock second place.
The Alpine ace, 40, said: “It feels great.
“It has been an unbelievable weekend and we have been competitive and thanks to the wet conditions, the car was mega and I was so comfortable.
“Red Bull are in a different league and pole was beyond our wildest dreams, so we will take a place on the front row.”
    Verstappen joy
Ecstatic pole winner Max Verstappen said: “In tricky conditions we stayed calm and made no mistakes, so I am happy with pole.
“You were really on the edge with the grip but then it became more enjoyable as the track dried and luckily it all worked out in the end.”

Nervy Norris still adjusting to fame
EXCLUSIVE: Lando Norris is ready to take centre stage at the British Grand Prix as he enjoys his Glastonbury moment, writes BEN HUNT.
The Brit, 22, grew up in the Somerset town but has never been to its famous music festival.
Norris has had a stellar rise during his 3½ years in Formula One.

And while he is yet to win a race, he has attracted an army of fans from across the world.
However, the McLaren driver admits he still gets nervous in front of big crowds — and will do at the sold-out British GP in two weeks’ time, where he will be presented on the stage at the Fan Zone.
Ahead of the Canadian GP in Montreal, Norris said: “To have one race a year where it is over the top, you have to be careful and try not to do too much to take the focus off why you are there.
“But having that experience of so many fans — like the fan stage last year with everyone chanting your name — it is a special feeling.
“I never expected that growing up. I’ve never been one for festivals and stuff like that, so I am not confident standing up there.
“I’m nervous but the atmosphere and the feeling you get is pretty special.
“There are thousands of people all there supporting me. That is such a cool thing.”
The top 10 – how it looks on the grid
    1. Max Verstappen
    2. Fernando Alonso

And Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc suffered another blow to his crown hopes as he’ll start bottom as a penalty for excessive engine usage.
    Grid recap
Verstappen and Alonso on the front row, Sainz and Hamilton next – followed by impressive Haas duo Mick Schumacher and Kevin Magnussen.

But Fernando Alonso was the surprise hero with second spot.
    Hamilton qualifies in fourth
Alonso nicks into second ahead of Sainz!
Alpine are jubilant as Alonso squeezed into the front row with Verstappen.
    That pushed Sainz out.
Sainz into second but Max sure of pole… surely
    Russell off!
    Not such a slick decision?
George Russell slid off after an ambitious turn in wet conditions.
But he’s still sixth quickest – with Lewis Hamilton in second.

The world champ increases his fastest-lap.
    So far…
    1. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) – 1:22.701

    3. Fernando Alonso (Alpine)
    4. Mick Schumacher (Haas)
    5. George Russell (Mercedes)
    Russell gambles on slick tyres!
The Brit is going for a broke with this – changing to potentially the fastest but trickiest tyres.
    Two laps and out
Most teams are changing tyres after just two laps.
    Ricciardo punished
Daniel Ricciardo saw a lap-time deleted for exceeding track limits when his McLaren hit the grass.
    Verstappen faster than Sainz
These two look the clear best.
    Russell already quicker than Lewis
Russell is 0.3s quicker than team-mate Hamilton after their first lap of the third qualifying session.
    BUT VERSTAPPEN IS FAR QUICKER.
    Third session under way

    14. Lando Norris (McLaren)
    15. Charles Leclerc (Ferrari – starts at back of grid)
Hairy time for Hamilton – but he survives

    Icardi to Wolves?
PSG have reportedly asked Jorge Mendes to orchestrate a transfer for Mauro Icardi to Wolves.
Corriere dello Sport claims PSG are desperate to offload struggling striker Icardi this summer.
PSG want to replace Icardi with Sassuolo’s Gianluca Scamacca, who scored 16 times in Serie A.
It’s reckoned there aren’t many takers for Icardi.
So PSG have asked his representative Mendes to try and facilitate a move to Wolves.

    Conte wants three more signings
Tottenham boss Antonio Conte is intent on adding three more signings to his squad after bringing in Yves Bissouma.
Conte hopes to recruit a right-wing back, centre-back, and a striker to Tottenham’s squad this summer, according to The Evening Standard.
And Nottingham Forest star Djed Spence is Conte’s top pick for the right-wing back role, the report adds.
However, Spurs have to fend off interest from face competition from Borussia Dortmund and Roma for Spence’s signature.
    Tavares wanted by Atalanta
Arsenal star Nuno Tavares is being chased by Italian club Atalanta.
The Serie A side have been impressed by the defender, and want to bring him in loan, according to Corriere della Sera.
Atalanta will likely try to add an option to buy clause into the deal, but it’s unclear if Arsenal will be open to doing so, the report adds.
    Chelsea line up Lewandowksi transfer
Chelsea are lining up Robert Lewandowski as a back-up target for Gabriel Jesus after Arsenal took a huge step towards signing the Brazilian, according to reports.
Chelsea had hoped to sign Jesus, 25, to solve their centre forward woes, with Timo Werner also struggling for goals following his 2020 transfer.
In fact, the German is regularly forced out wide by Thomas Tuchel, with Kai Havertz leading the line as a false nine.
Tuchel is desperate for an elite striker to finally solve his forward dilemma, with the boss keen on his wealth of Premier League experience and versatility.
But with Arsenal leading the race for the Manchester City star, Tuchel has turned his attention to Lewandowski as a back-up option, according to Christian Falk.
    Spurs close to completing biss-ness
Yves Bissouma has completed his medical ahead of a switch to Tottenham, report Sky Sports.
Spurs have agreed a £25million deal with Brighton for the midfielder, which could rise to £35m depending on add ons.
Bissouma is understood to have flown into the UK on Wednesday and stayed at the on-site hotel at Tottenham’s training ground.
Arsenal, Aston Villa and Everton had been among the other clubs interested in signing the Mali international this summer after Brighton had rejected a bid from Aston Villa for Bissouma in the January transfer window
    Prem transfer battle for Swede
Southampton are close to completing a £9million move to sign Bologna midfielder Mattias Svanberg, according to Calciomercato.
West Ham, Tottenham and Everton are all said to be interested in the Swedish midfielder, who is about to enter the final year of his contract.
    Marcelo Bielsa targets Antoine Griezmann
Marcelo Bielsa is being tipped to take over at Athletic Bilbao and he could make Antoine Griezmann his first signing.
The Frenchman was born in the Basque region so qualifies for Bilbao having previously played for neighbours Real Sociedad.
AS report Bielsa’s interest in the forward but state Atletico have first dibs since they have the option to make his loan permanent.
Liverpool complete £6.5m deal for Aberdeen full-back Calvin Ramsay
Liverpool are set to announce their third signing of the summer and in doing so complete their transfer business for the year.
Aberdeen full-back Calvin Ramsay will follow £85million arrival Darwin Nunez and Fabio Carvalho through the doors at Anfield.
The Reds and Scottish side Aberdeen have agreed a £6.5million fee for the 18-year-old right-back.
An initial £4m will be paid up-front, with the deal worth a further £2.5m in add-ons, a record sale for the SPL outfit.

And in signing Ramsay the Mail claim Liverpool’s business has concluded for the summer, eleven-weeks before the transfer window closes.
Carvalho and Nunez have already been recruited, with the Reds happy to wait another until 2023 to make more additions.
Man Utd offered ‘nothing’, says Pogba
Paul Pogba claims he left Manchester United because he did not receive a substantial contract offer from the club.
The midfielder, 29, is set to leave Old Trafford after six years when his contract expires at the end of the month.
In a new Amazon Prime documentary about his life titled “The Pogmentary”, Pogba shares the conversation he had with his agent, the late Mino Raiola, about United’s offer in the summer of 2021.
Raiola says to his client: “Yes. They absolutely want you to stay.
“For me, the offer doesn’t reflect that. I told them, ‘If you want him to stay, don’t make that offer’.
“I will make them understand that if they really want you to stay and they want to build a project around you, this time they have to act differently and put the money on the table.”
Pogba agreed with his agent’s view of the situation and the Frenchman responds saying: “They’re bluffing.
“How can you tell a player you absolutely want him and offer him nothing? Never seen that.”
Has Gary Neville got a reason to worry?
Gary Neville admitted Manchester United’s failure to make a signing this transfer window is “worrying” him.
As well as De Jong, the Red Devils have been linked with AC Milan midfielder Ismael Bennacer, who reportedly wants out at the San Siro.
Elsewhere an offer has been made for Christian Eriksen, who is a free agent after his short-term deal with Brentford came to an end.
But Neville is quite rightly keen for much of United’s business to be done before the Ten Hag era gets underway at home to Brighton on August 7.
The Red Devils have been handed a tricky opening month by the Premier League schedulers.
After travelling to Brentford, United face Liverpool, Southampton and Leicester, before hosting Arsenal at the start of September.
Man Utd face competition over Ward-Prowse
West Ham and Newcastle have reportedly joined Manchester United in the race to prise James Ward-Prowse away from Southampton.
SunSport exclusively revealed last month how new Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag had identified the midfielder as a key target.
Ten Hag is desperate to bolster his midfield with Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic set to leave when their contracts expire at the end of June.
We also told you how David Moyes was keeping tabs on the England international ahead of a possible summer swoop.
And now the Mirror have claimed that the Hammers boss is keen to bring him to the London Stadium.
They also state that Newcastle are interested in the player following his stunning 2021-22 season.
Ward-Prowse chipped in with a career-best 11 goals in 42 games in all competitions, while also registering eight assists.
    Want fries with that?
Manchester United and Tottenham have been joined by Chelsea in the battle to sign Inter Milan right-back Denzel Dumfries.
The Red Devils and Spurs are both priced as 6/1 favourites with Sky Bet, but Chelsea are just behind at 7/1.
The Dutch international impressed during last summers Euros campaign where the attacking fullback bagged two goals and an assist in Netherlands’ run to the round of 16.
His solid displays in the Euros earned the 26-year-old a £12m move from PSV to Inter Milan.
The right wing-back impressed in his first season in Italy, winning the Coppa Italia and the Supercoppa Italiana, leading to reports of another move this summer.
    Sky Bet odds:

    Manchester United – 6/1
    Tottenham – 6/1
    Chelsea – 7/1
    Bayern Munich – 16/1

    Wales ace in demand
Rabbi Matondo is at the centre of a SIX-CLUB summer transfer fight, writes SunSport’s Phil Cadden.
Premier League trio Brentford, Leeds and newly-promoted Nottingham Forest are all admirers of the Wales forward.
Matondo, who was on loan at Cercle Brugge last season but is contracted to Schalke, has also attracted interest from Ligue 1 clubs Lens, Brest and Troyes in France.
The 21-year-old did not find an agreement with Belgian club Brugge, where he scored nine goals last term, but is available for £3.5million.
Matondo has just one year left on his deal with the Bundesliga outfit.
Breaking – Arsenal set to seal Jesus with £50m bid
Arsenal have submitted a £50million bid for Manchester City star Gabriel Jesus, according to reports.
The Gunners previously bid £30m for Jesus, 25, but are now set to match City’s £50m asking price, report The Times.
And the forward is said to be keen on the move to link back up with Mikel Arteta, who he worked with at City.

The Gunners were seemingly unwilling to pay £50m to land Jesus previously given he is set to enter the final year of his City contract.
But the striker’s agent Marcello Pettinati reportedly arrived in London yesterday to hold transfer talks with Arsenal.
Personal terms are still yet to be agreed but it seems Jesus is heading for the Emirates.
    2022-23 Premier League match-ball
The Premier League have revealed their 2022-23 Nike match-ball – and it’s a stunning retro throwback.
The fixtures for the upcoming season were released early on Thursday morning.
And the official Premier League Twitter account followed that up shortly afterwards by sharing two pictures of the new match-ball.
Nike’s 2022-23 effort is inspired by the iconic 1992-93 Mitre Pro-Max ball used for the first-ever Prem campaign, even featuring the navy blue, red and gold arrows.

The Premier League shared a sneak peek of the ball on Twitter, captioned: “Inspired by the first PL season, 30 years ago.
“The new 2022-23 Nike Flight PL Ball. Out 15 July.”
Tielemans a ‘top priority’ for Arteta
Arsenal are hopeful they can seal a deal for Leicester midfielder Youri Tielemans before the end of the month, according to reports.
Ben Jacobs of CBS Sports said: “Arsenal remain confident and on course to sign Youri Tielemans before the month is out.
“Interest from Tottenham was never too advanced. But Bissouma’s incoming arrival will allay fears Spurs could hijack the deal.
“Tielemans is one of Arteta’s top priorities.”
    Jorginho no longer ‘untouchable’?
Juventus could offer Merih Demiral to Chelsea in exchange for Jorginho, with the Italian midfielder no longer considered “untouchable”, according to reports.
Chelsea chief Tuchel has a plan to rebuild and could use Jorginho, 30, as a pawn to land a freebie to help ease his woes.
The Italy international was considered “untouchable” by Stamford Bridge chiefs and was even tipped for the Ballon d’Or as recently as last year.

But according to CalcioMercato, Tuchel is happy to move on from the midfielder, who’s hot form cooled late last season.
And Juventus are set to take advantage by offering a straight swap.
Demiral, 24, spent last season on loan at Atalanta, but the Serie A side rejected their £15million option to sign the Turkish international permanently.
The centre-back is not in Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri’s plans.
The Old Lady boss was set to put Demiral on the transfer market for around £25m.
    Forest close to signing Henderson
Nottingham Forest are “close to agreeing” a deal with Manchester United for the signing of keeper Dean Henderson.
Sky Sports report that deal is a loan with an option to buy for around £20million.
Forest are looking to replace Brice Samba, who told the club he wants to leave.
Chelsea a ‘realistic destination’ for Nkunku
Former England international Glen Johnson reckons that Christopher Nkunku should snub Manchester United for a move to Stamford Bridge.
Nkunku, 24, has been linked with both Chelsea and United this summer.
And the ex-Chelsea man spoke to bettingodds.com about the highly-rated midfielder.
Johnson said: “I believe Chelsea is a more realistic destination than Manchester United if both clubs are genuinely interested.
“A player going to a top team that’s had a really good season will be looking for Champions League football… I definitely think that’s where these sorts of players look first.
“If he was to leave RB Leipzig, then I think Chelsea could be a better fit.”
    Inter make Lukaku bid
Inter Milan have made an opening bid for Romelu Lukaku, according to reports.
The Belgian is eager to return to San Siro, just one year after his £97.5million return to Chelsea.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Inter offered just £4.3m to loan Lukaku back for the season.
The bid was quickly rejected by the Blues, but the striker will continue to push.
Lukaku has informed Todd Boehly and Thomas Tuchel that he only wants to return to Inter.
    Klopp vs Guardiola
Liverpool host Man City on Oct 15.
The reverse tie in Manchester is on April Fool’s day.
Stick them in your diary folks.
    Super Sunday
The first Super Sunday of the season will feature both Manchester clubs.
Manchester City will see summer signing Erling Haaland in action.
Pep Guardiola’s Prem champions will travel to the London Stadium to face West Ham.
The two sides played out a thrilling 2-2 draw last time out, with City coming from two goals down after Jarrod Bowen scored a first half brace.

But just before West Ham and City play, Erik ten Hag will look to start his Manchester United career with a win.
The Red Devils will take on Brighton at Old Trafford in a 2PM kick-off.
Friday night lights and Saturday kick offs
Arsenal will kick off the Premier League season for the second year in a row with the Gunners travelling to Selhurst Park to face Crystal Palace.
The last time Arsenal faced Patrick Vieira’s men away from home, Palace stuck three past them in a major blow to their top-four hopes.
Liverpool fans will then be given a first glimpse of club record signing Darwin Nunez in competitive action.
Jurgen Klopp’s domestic double Reds travel to Championship record goal scorers Fulham.
Fabio Carvalho could feature against his old club Fulham after leaving for Liverpool on a free transfer.
Bournemouth’s return to the top flight will see them face a new look Aston Villa at 3PM.
Leeds vs Wolves, Leicester vs Brentford, Newcastle vs Nottingham Forest and Tottenham vs Southampton make up the rest of the 3PM kick-offs on the opening weekend.
Everton will then close the opening Saturday when they welcome Chelsea to Goodison Park in a 5.30 kick-off.

    2022/23 Premier League opening weekend
The Premier League fixtures have been released!
We have a Friday night bout between Arsenal and Palace to open the Premier League season.
Promoted Fulham are up against Liverpool in the early kick-off on Saturday.
And champions Man City face a tricky away tie at West Ham on Sunday.
    Bring it on.

    Jules might be stolen
Chelsea target Jules Kounde is reportedly in advanced talks over a move to Barcelona.
Kounde, 23, has been a long term target for Thomas Tuchel’s team as they look to replace departing key defenders.
Both Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen are leaving for free and centre-back Kounde seems the perfect fit.
But now Cataluyna Radio claim that Barcelona are in “advanced negotiations” with Sevilla for the French international.
There is a £51million deal lined up which would see the Catalan club also send a player in exchange.
It would be a major blow to Chelsea’s transfer plans, in the first window of the Todd Boehly era.

Blues willing to pay Kounde clause
Chelsea and Newcastle are both reportedly willing to meet the release clause in the contract of Sevilla’s Jules Kounde but Barcelona are also interested.
Barca, due to financial difficulties, may not be able to afford the £69million it will take to buy Kounde.
Therefore, Xavi’s side are weighing up alternative options such as offering players as part of the deal.
Mundo Deportivo claim full-back Sergino Dest is one man that Barcelona would be willing to send to Sevilla to help lower the fee for the centre-back.
Kounde has also reportedly expressed his desire to play for the Catalan giants over any other team.
    Villa ace nears exit
Trabzonspor have tabled a £3.4million bid for Aston Villa’s winger Trezeguet – however Villa are holding out for £4.3m, writes SunSport’s Graeme Bryce.
The 27-year-old Egyptian spent a successful loan spell with Istanbul Basaksehir after returning from injury in January.
Trezeguet scored six goals and provided four assists in 13 league games to attract interest from rival Turkish clubs, headed by Trabzonspor who also face competition from other clubs on the continent.
They are gearing up for a crack at the Champions’ League after winning the Turkish Super Lig for the first time since 1984.
Manager Abdullah Avci is already closing in on Rangers’ Croatian left-back Borna Barisic and wants Trezeguet to beef up his attacking options.
Turkish sources say Villa refused to loan the winger out again and Trabzonspor failed with an initial bid worth just under £3.5million plus add-ons to be paid in installments.
Villa boss Steven Gerrard needs to raise cash to fund more buys and the club’s money-men are digging their heels in for a fee north of £4million.
Trezeguet accepts he is unlikely to shift Philippe Coutinho, Leon Bailey and Emi Buendia and is keen to move to Trabzonspor, who can offer him Champions’ League football.
    Flop nearing Serie A return
Romelu Lukaku is reportedly closing in on a return to Inter Milan from Chelsea.
The striker has informed Blues chiefs that he has his heart set on a move back to Italy after a disastrous season at Stamford Bridge.
And the two clubs are now set for face-to-face talks as they aim to wrap up a deal as soon as possible.
Lukaku has been pining for a reunion with Inter for months after going off the boil in London.
The Belgian is ready to take a 50 per cent pay cut to force through a move.
But Inter are unable to afford a permanent deal and want Chelsea to accept a loan offer.
Fabrizio Romano claim the Blues are receptive to Lukaku’s exit, however, they want a £17m loan fee or a player in exchange – with the likes of Lautaro Martinez and Alessandro Bastoni admired by Thomas Tuchel.
    Arsenal take hard line approach
The Gunners are telling miserly rivals to put up or shut up after pulling the plug on Lucas Torreira’s cut-price move to Fiorentina, writes SunSport’s Mark Irwin.
The Emirates hierarchy are fed up with European clubs trying to sign their unwanted players on the cheap.
And they have ruled that the days of the great Gunners giveaway are now a thing of the past as they look to get greater value for money in the transfer market.
They are particularly irked by Fiorentina pleading poverty during negotiations for Torreira just months after using Arsenal’s interest in Dusan Vlahovic to squeeze £65million from Juventus for the striker.
Fiorentina had agreed a £12.5million option to sign Torreira when they took him on loan last season.
But they reneged on that pledge when it came to negotiations for a permanent deal and said they would go no higher than £7million.
    Spurs flop returning to Europe
Vincent Janssen is wanted by Marc Overmars and Mark van Bommel at Antwerp, writes SunSport’s Phil Cadden.
The Holland striker, who turned 28 on Wednesday, plays for Mexican side Monterrey after leaving Spurs in 2019.
But Janssen is set for a return to Europe with the Belgian club, who have ex-Arsenal star Overmars as technical and former Netherlands midfielder van Bommel as coach.
Janssen said: “There has been contact with Marc Overmars and Mark van Bommel. I hope we get out, but I can’t say more about it.
“I had three great years in Mexico and I’m still happy there. But we’ll see in the coming days.”
Janssen started for Louis van Gaal’s Holland in their 3-2 Nations League win over Wales on Tuesday night and hopes to make the Dutch squad for the World Cup.
United preparing a bid for Bennacer
Manchester United are preparing a renewed bid for AC Milan star Ismael Bennacer, according to reports.
The Algerian midfielder was part of the Rossoneri’s Serie A title winning squad, making 31 league appearances and scoring two goals.
But the 24-year-old has just one year left on his contract at the San Siro and he’s yet to sign a new deal.
And reports in the Algerian press suggest the player is unhappy about losing his place in the Milan starting line-up to Frank Kessie and Sandro Tonali.
Old Trafford officials are thought to have spoken to their Milan counterparts about Bennacer.
Milan want £43million for Bennacer but may have to accept less.

    Forest in talks for Henderson
Manchester United are in talks with Nottingham Forest over a proposed loan move for Dean Henderson, according to reports.
The goalkeeper, 25, is out of favour at Old Trafford and has been heavily linked with a move away.
Premier League new boys Forest are in need of a shot-stopper after play-off hero Brice Samba announced he wants to leave the club.
Henderson has been eyed as his replacement with Forest seeking a loan deal that could be made permanent for £20million, reports Fabrizio Romano.

Negotiations are reportedly ongoing with Henderson said to be open to the switch.
The keeper made just five appearances for United last season and with the World Cup looming he will be hoping for regular game time to impress Gareth Southgate.
Henderson was left out of England’s Nations League squad after falling behind Aaron Ramsdale and Nick Pope in the Three Lions pecking order.
Pulisic would be a ‘really good signing’ for Liverpool, says Johnson
Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson believes Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic would be a good signing for his former club.
Johnson spoke to Bettingodds.com said: “I like him. He’s gone to a big club and I think he’s done okay.
“I don’t think he’s set the world alight but I do like him and he’s a good squad player. When he’s on form he’s fantastic.
“If he was to go to Liverpool then I think that would be a really good signing.
“He’s the sort of player that Jurgen likes, so yes I could see him fitting in there well.”
Lukaku swap deal still an option
Chelsea and Inter are in talks to get a deal which is favourable for both parties.
A swap deal for striker Lautaro Martinez is still on the table.
Ben Jacobs of CBS Sports tweeted: “Lukaku will have to take a wage cut and accepts this.
“Chelsea are exploring both a traditional loan and a swap-deal.
“Inter don’t want to let Martinez go. They see his relationship and friendship with Lukaku as key.
“Chelsea sources have always distanced themselves from Martinez and say a swap-deal is just ‘one possibility’”.
Toon enter the chase for Areola
Newcastle have reportedly opened talks with Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, writes Alex Smith.
The 29-year-old stopper spent last season on loan at West Ham and reports suggest he is now looking for a permanent move.
RMC Sport now claim Newcastle have entered the battle to sign him.
However, a deal may prove difficult as West Ham appear in pole position to sign Areola as they have the option to buy him for a rumoured £11million.
The Frenchman is also in the process of negotiating with David Moyes’ side with West Ham wanting to accelerate talks now the player is back from international duty.

Botman ‘resisting’ Newcastle offer for Milan move
Sven Botman is “resisting” Newcastle’s transfer offer as he is holding out on a dream move to AC Milan, according to reports.
The Dutchman looks certain to leave Lille this summer and is attracting interest from a number of top clubs from across Europe, writes Joshua Mbu.
Milan and Newcastle appear to be frontrunners for the 22-year-old defender, with the Magpies able to offer big wages.
However, according to La Gazetta dello Sport, Botman is “resisting” Newcastle’s offer and is holding out on a move to Milan.
Botman is said to have already agreed personal terms with the Serie A champions.
But Milan are yet to tempt Lille into selling, with their £28.5million offer coming up short of the £34m asking price.
The centre-back is willing to wait for Lille and Milan to agree terms.
Frenkie wary of making Man Utd move
Frenkie de Jong says Barcelona are the ‘biggest club in the world’ as Manchester United remain locked in talks over a £65million move for the Holland star, writes Phillip Cadden.
The Dutch playmaker impressed in the 3-2 Nations League win over Wales in Rotterdam on Tuesday night.
Afterwards, De Jong was asked about his future and if he was flattered by the interest from new United boss Erik Ten Hag.
To which the 25-year-old said: “You’re always flattered when teams show interest in you as a player.
“I am at the biggest club in the world at the moment and I feel fine there, so no news.”
United have not made a formal bid yet but Ten Hag is keen to work with midfield ace De Jong again after a successful spell together at Ajax.
    Dar wants to win
Darwin Nunez has opened up on why he chose to join Liverpool over Man United… trophies.
He said: “You can then imagine yourself winning more trophies and then later on when you come here again and see the trophies on display, you can say: ‘Look, I was a part of that, I was there at that time, winning trophies.’
“That’s one of the reasons why I came here to Liverpool – to win trophies and titles. I want to win a lot of trophies at Liverpool.”
Lewandowski ‘perfect replacement’ for Lukaku, says Wright-Phillips
Former Chelsea winger Shaun Wright-Phillips reckons that the Blues should go all in for Robert Lewandowski if Lukaku leaves for Inter.
Rom has been closing in on a return to the San Siro and the clubs are in direct talks for a loan deal.
Should the striker be off, Wright-Phillips told Genting Casino that Lewandowski would fill in perfectly.
However, he did warn that Tuchel’s team would need to play to his strengths, something they haven’t managed with Lukaku.
He said: “Robert Lewandowski would be the perfect replacement for Romelu Lukaku if Lukaku does leave.
“No matter what team he plays in, he always scores goals.
“Chelsea would just have to make sure they play to his strengths.”
    Toon closing in on McArthur
Newcastle are reportedly closing in on a deal for Kilmarnock wonderkid Charlie McArthur, writes Anthony Chapman.
The 17-year-old, out of contract next year, is one of Scottish football’s top young prospects.
And the Telegraph claims McArthur is now set for a switch to mega-rich Newcastle after breaking into Killie’s first team this term.
The centre-back, who captained Scotland at this year’s U17s Euros, made four senior appearances for Kilmarnock – including a league debut in May.

Manchester City and Liverpool were both linked with swoops in the January transfer window.
Meanwhile, a £275,000 bid was mooted amid interest from Brighton, Wolves and West Ham.
But Newcastle look to have won the race for McArthur’s coveted signature.
    Top of the Kop
New Liverpool signing Darwin Nunez’s son and step-daughter showed off their new Liverpool No27 shirts just hours after he put pen to paper on his £85million deal.
The striker’s girlfriend Lorena Manas accompanied the ex-Benfica man at Anfield as he signed for the Premier League club on Tuesday.
And Lorena posted photos of her daughter Chloe, seven, and the couple’s son, also called Darwin, in their Liverpool kits.
Chloe’s shirt bore her name and little Darwin, born in January in Lorena’s native Almeria in south-east Spain, had “Daddy” printed on the back.
Liverpool have given him the No27 shirt, which was recently vacated by Divock Origi.

    Mad about Bellingham
Real Madrid are reportedly eyeing up a sensational £78million swoop for Borussia Dortmund and England midfielder Jude Bellingham.
The 18-year-old international, who is under contract until 2025, has been heavily linked with a move to both Liverpool and Manchester United – with Jurgen Klopp’s side reportedly making a formal offer.
However, Spanish and European champions Real Madrid could well steal the teenager away from the Premier League sides.
According to Cadena Ser, Los Blancos are keen to sign the Dortmund man in the summer of 2023.
That is because by the end of next season they are confident Vinicius Junior will have a Spanish passport – freeing up a non-EU place in their squad.
    Klopp issues Nunez warning
Jurgen Klopp has urged Liverpool fans to be patient with Darwin Nunez who’s not the finished article yet.
He said: “It’s important we all recognise we are getting a ‘work in progress’ with Darwin.
“He recognises that himself, for sure. I love how much focus and humility he has.
“We have wonderful attacking options already and he becomes part of that now.
“So there is no pressure on him at all. He signs for a very long time and we intend to nurture his talent and see it grow.”
Only ‘minor details’ left on Pogba switch, say reports
Paul Pogba is on the brink of finally completing his switch to Juventus.
The France ace has nearly agreed a contract with Juve, with a few minor details to be sorted, according to Fabrizio Romano.
He’s set to receive £6.9m plus add-ons every season he spends in Turin, the report adds.
West Ham want Areola for good
West Ham United are expected to exercise the option to sign goalkeeper Alphonse Areola from Paris-Saint Germain following his year on loan at the London Stadium.
That’s the understanding of Sky Sports’ Dharmesh Sheth, who reports that talks are ongoing with the player’s representatives regarding personal terms.
England a ‘shambles’, says Piers Morgan
Piers Morgan slammed England’s performance against Hungary as ‘Southgate Out’ trended on Twitter following a 4-0 humiliation in the Nations League.
The Three Lions were ripped apart by Hungary at Molineux as Southgate received chants of “you don’t know what you’re doing” from his own fans.
The England team were booed when the third goal went in 10 minutes from the end.
And Southgate was then on the end of abuse from supporters when he put centre-back Harry Maguire on for forward Bukayo Saka after John Stones was sent off – with England already 3-0 down.
Morgan was one of the first to post about the disappointing display, saying: “Bloody hell, England.. what a shambles. What the hell’s going on Mr Southgate???”

With England’s dire performances during this Nations League period, fans are feeling a familiar sense of dread going into the World Cup.
But as Harry Kane said after the game: “Let’s not forget where we have come from”.
Under Southgate, confidence must remain high until we see them flop when it really matters.
    Alexander-Arnold welcomes Nunez
Trent Alexander-Arnold has welcomed Darwin Nunez to Liverpool.
The full-back has built a reputation as an assist king at Anfield.
And Alexander-Arnold let Nunez know that he’s here to serve him next season in a cheeky Twitter message.
The England international quipped to Nunez: “Welcome to Liverpool!@Darwinn99 How may I assist you?”

Pulisic a ‘really good signing’ for Liverpool, says Johnson
Former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson believes Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic would be a good signing for his former club.
Johnson spoke to Bettingodds.com said: “I like him. He’s gone to a big club and I think he’s done okay.
“I don’t think he’s set the world alight but I do like him and he’s a good squad player. When he’s on form he’s fantastic.
“If he was to go to Liverpool then I think that would be a really good signing.
“He’s the sort of player that Jurgen likes, so yes I could see him fitting in there well.”
    Chelsea eye Lazio keeper
Chelsea are reportedly eyeing a transfer swoop for Lazio keeper Thomas Strakosha.
Strakosha is available on a free transfer.
And the Blues are considering him as a viable option to replace No.1 goalie Kepa if he decides to leave Stamford Bridge, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Blues are also poised to sign 18-year-old stopper Gabriel Slonina from Chicago Fire.
But the Blues see him as one for the future, and plan to loan him back to the MLS side, the report adds.

England 0-4 Hungary LIVE RESULT: Abject Three Lions suffer worst home defeat since 1928 as Hungarians run riot

ENGLAND have been hammered by Hungary as they suffered their heaviest home defeat since 1928.Roland Sallai netted from a set piece in the first half and then doubled his tally on the counter-attack in the second.
Adam Nagy then compounded England’s woes by firing into the top corner with ten minutes left.
But the night was still to get worse for Gareth Southgate as John Stones was given a soft second yellow card and Daniel Gazdag dinked the ball over Aaron Ramsdale to net Hungary’s fourth.
    Rossi wants to leave legacy
Where do you want your statue, Marco Rossi?
The Hungary boss revealed after his side’s historic victory at Molineux that he hoped to leave a legacy when his time in charge of the Magyars comes to an end – and he’s certainly going the right way about it.
After their admirable showing in Euro 2020’s group of death, the 57-year-old Italian has now led the Hungarian team to the top of a Nations League group that includes Italy, Germany and England.
Although he slightly tarnished his reputation in his post-match press conference by admitting that was stopping off in Budapest on the way home to watch the Red Hot Chilli Peppers at the Puskas Arena.
I said to the president and prime minister that I want to leave a sign of my presence here. Everybody will die – this is the one thing in the world that is really democratic – and when I die, I’m sure in Hungary there will be one minute of silence in the stadium.Marco Rossi

    Kane: Critics have short memories
Harry Kane has urged disappointed England fans not to forget how far the national side has come in recent years under Gareth Southgate.
The striker pointed to the Three Lions performances at the European Championships and World Cup, and insisted that the squad will give their all to make sure they’re ready by the time November’s tournament in Qatar comes round.
Let’s not forget where we have come from – our first final in 60 years, a semi-final in the World Cup – compared to where we have been in the last 50 years. We’ll keep working to try and have a successful World Cup.Harry KaneChannel 4

    Southgate takes responsibility for selection
Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate took full responsibility on a humbling night for English football.
The England manager admitted that the team selected, both tonight and in the away defeat to Hungary, had the wrong balance in order to get the better of their dogged League A opponents.
We picked a young team with energy, but when the game started to go against them, it looked that way. That’s my responsibility. We needed to go for the game at half-time, and made changes that gave us more of an attacking impetus but then we were a little more open as well.
I’ve tried to balance looking at new players and resting players, but the team I’ve selected have not been strong enough to get results in the two Hungary games. I understand that tonight is a chastening experience. I now understand that we need to be at full strength.Gareth SouthgateChannel 4

    Leaders Hungary at the Wolves
Hungary’s thumping 4-0 win against England at Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Molineux stadium takes them to the top of League A, Group 3 in the Nations League.
England, on the other hand, are rock bottom, and defeat in Italy when they next play in September would mean relegation from the top set of groups.
Unsurprisingly, the Three Lions are no longer able to top the table.
Elsewhere tonight, Germany leapt over the Italians after crushing them 5-2 in Monchengladbach.

Kane: We will come back stronger
England captain Harry Kane admitted that it was a dismal night for the national team, but vowed that the Three Lions would come back stronger in time for November’s World Cup.
It’s a disappointing night. I thought we created enough chances in the first half to score, but it’s been the story of our Nations League in this camp so far. We haven’t quite had the cutting edge, and the second half was unacceptable to concede in the way we did. We’ve not had a camp like it for a long, long time though. It’s no time to panic, it’s time to keep our heads up, to look forward to a break and come back stronger.Harry KaneChannel 4

    The match stats from Molineux
Aaron Ramsdale faced five shots on target tonight – more than he had in his previous two internationals combined – and conceded four of them.

    Records tumble as Lions crumble
Not only have England lost a home match by four goals without reply for the first time in their history, it’s their biggest margin of defeat at home since losing 5-1 to Scotland 96 years ago.
Indeed, Hungary are the first nation to score four goals away to England since they themselves bagged six in that famous match at Wembley in 1953.
Perhaps Callum Styles is the new Ferenc Puskas.

Full time – England 0-4 Hungary
They think it’s all over – and thank heavens it is.
England’s worst defeat since 1964 brings to an end a dreadful international window in which they lost to Hungary twice, and failed to win any of their four games.
Two goals from Roland Sallai, and late strikes from Zsolt Nagy and Daniel Gazdag stunned the Three Lions, and left the Molineux crowd gunning – rightly or wrongly – for Gareth Southgate’s head.
Oh well. At least the cricket was good.

    England 0-4 Hungary
    90. Is there anything to be said for turning it off and restarting the game?
I suppose it could be a big marketing campaign for Channel 4’s coverage.
Thankfully, there will only be one minute of stoppage time played.
    England 0-4 Hungary
    89. What kind of thing is happening here?!
In the final minute, Hungary add a fourth and England are staring one of their worst ever results in the face.
It’s all so simple too. Adam Nagy slips a ball through the middle for fellow substitute Daniel Gazdag to shake off the last defender, and nonchalantly dink over Aaron Ramsdale.
The Hungary players can’t believe it. The Hungary fans can’t believe it. And Gareth Southgate certainly can’t believe it.

    England 0-3 Hungary
    87. The travelling Hungary fans are ole-ing every pass.
Which is certainly an improvement on them booing England’s black players.
England 0-3 Hungary – England substitution
    84. Booooooooooooooooooooo.
The home fans can’t believe what they’re seeing now.
At 3-0 down at home to Hungary, Gareth Southgate is introducing Harry Maguire for Bukayo Saka.
I believe this is what they call trolling from the England boss.

England 0-3 Hungary – John Stones red card!
    82. As bad as England have been tonight, the worst performance has arguably been from referee Clement Turpin.
The feeble French official has just sent John Stones off for a second bookable offence, penalising him for being run into by Daniel Gazdag.
His first caution was a joke too.

    England 0-3 Hungary
    81. Chants of ‘You don’t know what you’re doing’ echo around Molineux from those England fans that remain in the stadium.

    England 0-3 Hungary
    80. Oh dear.
Hungary have a third, and England are in complete disarray.
A quick counter down the right sees a cross stepped up for Loig Nego, whose header is blocked.
However, Martin Adam lays the loose ball back to the advancing Zsolt Nagy, who slams home brilliantly from 20 yards.
    Wow!

    England 0-2 Hungary
    77. Header from Kane! Off the crossbar!
The England captain is unfortunate not to halve the deficit with a brilliantly executed header from Mount’s cross, and then chances his arm by flinging himself in front of a defender with the aim of winning a penalty.
    Well, it worked in Germany
    England 0-2 Hungary
    75. Some intent from Foden but it’s too little, too late.
The substitute cuts inside from the right, and pulls a shot wide of the post from 20 yards.
In any case, Dibusz had it covered.
    England 0-2 Hungary
    74. England huff and puff inside a packed penalty area.
Sterling struggles to dig out a cross, Saka struggles to head back across goal, and eventually the flag goes up for offside.
    England 0-2 Hungary
    72. According to our friends at Squawka, this is the first time in 60 years that Hungary have scored twice in a game against England.
And it’s also how long watching this has felt.
    England 0-2 Hungary
    70. He’s done it again!
Roland Sallai doubles his tally and Hungary’s lead, and the boos ring around Molineux.
Martin Adam is in the thick of things straight away, shrugging off the indecisive Kalvin Phillips, and then feeding Sallai in space.
Under pressure from Kyle Walker, the Hungarian has to take the shot on first time, and does so expertly by smashing the ball through Aaron Ramsdale’s legs with the outside of his foot.
What a shock! What a shocker!

England 0-1 Hungary – Hungary substitution
    68. And now a change for the visitors.
Martin Adam looks more Soccer Aid celebrity than international striker, but – trust me – this guy knows where the goal is.
    He replaces captain Adam Szalai.
England 0-1 Hungary – England substitution
    67. And here is Foden!
The Manchester City forward is on in place of Jude Bellingham.
