Liverpool 2-1 Newcastle LIVE RESULT: Fabio Carvalho bags 98th minute winner to leave Toon raging in Premier League

LIVERPOOL secured the most crucial of victories in the 98th minute against Newcastle. The Reds had to come from behind after Alexander Isak netted on his Toon debut just hours after being granted a work permit to play the match.
The Swede had the ball in the net again in the second half but was marginally ruled offside.
Minutes later, Firmino levelled for Liverpool before Fabio Carvalho volleyed in from a corner in the 98th minute.
That left Newcastle assistant Jason Tindall fuming as just five minutes had been added on.

    Liverpool boss praises Carvalho goal
The Reds boss spoke about what it felt like to get the late win against Newcastle this evening:
It feels great, we will remember it for years and years. I am not 100% sure all believed until the end but from now on they have to because we showed again it is possible.Jurgen KloppLiverpool
    Heart of a lion
Whatever your persuasion, it is hard not to love the passion of Jurgen Klopp.
You can see how much it means to him to win, it is what every fan wants to see from their manager.
He mirrors the feelings of the fans and so often delivers.
As soon as the final whistle blows, he is sprinting over to the home support, fist pumping his chest to cheers from the fans.

    Plenty of positives for Toon
Despite the last-gasp defeat here at Anfield today, Newcastle can take a lot of positives from the game.
So often they have come to Liverpool and it has been all too much of a one-sided contest and a scoreline to match.
The Magpies made a game of this from start to finish and their dogged defending frustrated the home side.
Newcastle’s defensive wall finally breached in the 98th minute.
    Kop silences Newcastle roar
Right up until the final kick of the game, the away end was in full voice expecting to get a point from a game they had played well in, tactics working to frustrate Liverpool.
It wasn’t until Fabio Carvalho thundered a shot in off the underside of the crossbar that the Geordie faithful were finally silenced.
Anfield nights, littered with drama and late goals.

    Howe’s your luck Eddie?
Eddie Howe made it nine consecutive defeats against Liverpool as a manager to equal the record set by Gary Megson.
At half-time, the Newcastle manager would have felt they were in a good position to get a memorable result at Anfield tonight.
One thing you should always know is this Liverpool team play to the final whistle and have a habit of getting late goals to win games.
Anfield erupted as Carvalho’s goal went in, the roof almost came off the stadium.

    Magpies cramp up at Anfield
Fabio Carvalho scores a last gasp winner in the 98th minute to give Liverpool all three points in a game they probably did not deserve to win.
Newcastle seemed keen from the outset to go to ground all too easily, running down the clock and then making miraculous recoveries.
As a result, they conceded deep into stoppage time of added time and had their hearts broken.
Some would say this is karma, Newcastle have their first defeat of the season.
    FT: Liverpool 2-1 Newcastle
The referee brings the game to a close.
Newcastle hearts broken again at Anfield.
Eddie Howe’s side paying the price for their constant timewasting.
    Liverpool 2-1 Newcastle
90+7. What a sensational end to this game.
Fabio Carvalho, what a way to introduce yourself to the club.
Celebrating his 20th birthday yesterday, Carvalho is the hero of the hour at Anfield.
    Goal – Fabio Carvalho (Liverpool)
    Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle
90+4. Newcastle’s new signing Alexander Isak is awarded the man of the match award for his display today.
The away fans have enjoyed this game from start to finish.
With such a poor record at Anfield, tonight will seem like a move in the right direction for Eddie Howe’s side.
    Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle
90+2. The way it is looking Newcastle are going to keep their unbeaten start to the season.
Liverpool need to get back into training bright and early tomorrow to practice their set piece deliveries.
The fans hope there is time for one more chance.

Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle – Trippier yellow card
    90. Liverpool’s set pieces have been dreadful tonight.
Diaz skips passed Trippier who trips him up and receives a yellow card.
It is almost as if Newcastle are happy to give away fouls as they do not fear the delivery.
We are going to have an additional five minutes.
    Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle
    88. Lascelles is booked for a foul on Elliott.
Murphy kicks the ball away to waste some time but the referee sees no issue in that.
Premier League refereeing at its most inconsistent worst.
    Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle
    86. Liverpool are creating half chances but nothing concrete.
We are into the last five minutes or so, to win this game they need to change it up a gear.
Otherwise they risk being caught out on the counter.
    Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle
    84. Miguel Almiron comes off Elliott Anderson.
Requires a tactical reshuffle for Newcastle.
Anderson wins a free kick drawing the foul from James Milner.

    Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle
    82. Draw would seem like defeat to Liverpool given the start they have had to their season.
Willock is penalised for a foul on Carvalho.
Newcastle are holding a high line at these free kicks.
The ball comes in and Newcastle get a head to it but the second ball drops to Fabinho who slices the ball over the bar much to the groans of the home fans.
    Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle
    80. Liverpool’s attack breaks down once again.
Firmino chases back all the way into his own half to win the ball back in front of his centre halves.
If only the whole team had his work rate.
    Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle
    78. The game is held up as Newcastle have two players down in the box.
Liverpool fans understandably boo as it seems to be a constant tactic throughout this game.
The referee really needs to make sure this time is added on at the end of the game.
    Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle
    76. This game could go either way.
Neither side are creating many clean-cut chances.
Newcastle may be the happier of the two teams to come away with a point.
    Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle
    74. Milner finds Salah on the edge of the box.
He does well to hold the ball up with Dan Burn all over him.
The game has become very scrappy now with both sides.

    Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle
    72. Milner takes a free kick that is headed clear by Burn.
Can never understand that, giving set piece responsibilities to the player who hasn’t kicked a ball all evening.
There can’t be many teams in the top six who bring on 36 year old players in centre midfield.
    Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle
    70. Big tactical change by Jurgen Klopp.
It looks like Liverpool might switch to a back three.
Currently it looks like Milner has slotted into right back.
    Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle
    68. Joe Gomez must scare Liverpool fans when in possession of the ball at centre-back.
Not that Alexander-Arnold is doing much better this season.
Jordan Henderson is coming off for James Milner.
Konstas Tsimikas is coming on for Andrew Robertson.
Fabio Carvalho comes on for Alexander-Arnold.
    Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle
    66. Liverpool will be hoping to use that goal as a platform to build on in this game.
Gomez again almost gifts Newcastle a clean run on Alisson’s goal.
Meanwhile, not to be outdone, Alexander-Arnold is dispossessed once again for Newcastle to mount an attack.
    Credit: Reuters
    Liverpool 1-1 Newcastle
    64. Alexander Isak comes off for Chris Wood.
Jacob Murphy comes on for Ryan Fraser.
Good start to his Newcastle career for the forward tonight.

West Ham 1-1 Tottenham LIVE RESULT: Soucek earns Hammers point after VAR controversy – Premier League reaction

TOTTENHAM earned a point at London rivals West Ham but may feel they should have had more.Antonio Conte’s men thought they had been given a penalty for a handball by Aaron Cresswell.
However VAR overturned the decision as the ball ricocheted off his head before striking his hand.
Spurs did then take the lead through a Thilo Kehrer own goal in the first half, but Tomas Soucek equalised for the hosts after the break.
    Goodnight from the London Stadium
It’s been another dramatic night in the Premier League from first minute to last – and it’s not over yet.
There’s one more game still to come in this midweek schedule with Leicester hosting Manchester United tomorrow, and that’s not all.
Because in 24 hours time, the transfer window will slam shut and we’re expecting as much excitement in the boardroom as out on the pitch.
You won’t miss a single deal or kick with us here at SunSport so be sure to join us on Thursday to keep on top of the latest news from your club.
Until then, thanks for joining us and goodbye.
    Conte slams use of VAR
Tottenham boss Antonio Conte was critical of the Premier League’s use of VAR after seeing his side have a penalty given in the first half – that was then over-ruled by the video officials.
Peter Bankes had originally awarded a spotkick when Harry Kane’s header appeared to strike Aaron Cresswell’s arm, but the officials at Stockley Park informed the referee that the ball had first come off the defender’s head.
I spoke with the referee and told him ‘you made the right decision, and then the VAR told you to look again’. It is strange. Usually the VAR only call when the decision is not right, but in England they need to learn much more how to use VAR.Antonio ConteBT Sport
    Happy Hammers on the up
A first home point of the season has lifted West Ham away the bottom three, and leaves them in a much better looking position than this time last week.
At the other end of the table, Spurs remain third, having kept their unbeaten start to the season in tact. However, they are already four points adrift of North London rivals Arsenal.

    Arsenal 2-1 Aston Villa
    Bournemouth 0-0 Wolves
    Liverpool 2-1 Newcastle
    Man City 6-0 Nott’m Forest
    West Ham 1-1 Tottenham

    Skipper Rice rues late chances.
West Ham captain Declan Rice admitted it was a game of fine margins after his side were inches away from taking all three points in the closing seconds.
However, the midfielder also said he was delighted with the Hammers’ overall game, and thought it was a performance much improved on recent home showings.
It’s a positive point, and at the end, you see it’s a game of margins. There was a different energy to us tonight. We were up for it, a London derby. WE know what it means to the fans and to us as players. Every tackle and every header is going to be roared, and you get yourself up for these occasions. To be 1-0 down, to come back, and to almost win the game was a positive performance.Declan RiceBT Sport
    Stats from the London Stadium
Tottenham had close to twice the possession and passes of their hosts, but elsewhere there was little separate the two teams in terms of the numbers.

Full time – West Ham 1-1 Tottenham
It ends all square in this London derby following a much-improved showing from West Ham in the second half.
The Hammers rallied after the break and cancelled out Thilo Kehrer’s first half own-goal with a brilliantly worked effort of their own, created by Michail Antonio and scored by Tomas Soucek.
It was a first goal at the London Stadium for the hosts this season and meant a first home point.
For Spurs, their undefeated campaign continues, but they will be disappointed by how this match seemingly got away from them after the break.
    West Ham 1-1 Tottenham
90+4. West Ham nearly win it in the final seconds!
A scramble in the box looks over when Sanchez slides away a cross, but Richarlison’s clearance clatters into Ogbonna.
Heading for the byline, Bowen chases the ball and manages to steer a volley beyond Lloris and along the goaline, inches away from Antonio.
    So, so close.

West Ham 1-1 Tottenham – Perisic yellow card
90+2. It’s a very scrappy end to the night at the London Stadium.
This time Perisic goes into Peter Bankes’ book for dissent.
West Ham 1-1 Tottenham – Paqueta yellow card
    90. A first Premier League yellow card for Lucas Paqueta, who commits a foul that ends with several players squaring up to each other.
In the end, Emerson also receives a caution.
Frustration from the two players involved in that late miss.

    West Ham 1-1 Tottenham
    89. West Ham have a chance to win it, but are let down by mis-communication.
A low cross is pulled back into the penalty from the byline, and has Emerson and Paqueta emerging on to it.
One of them needs to take charge and let fly, but instead they both leave it for each other and the ball disappears between the pair.
    I blame Kevin Nolan.
    West Ham 1-1 Tottenham
    88. Looking for Antonio, Coufal whips the set-piece in from the right.
Again, it’s Sanchez to Spurs’ rescue.
West Ham 1-1 Tottenham – Davies yellow card
    87. It’s another Spurs player in the book.
This time it’s Ben Davies, who goes through the back of Jarrod Bowen.
It results in a free-kick in a promising position for the Hammers, just inside the right touchline 35 yards from goal.
    West Ham 1-1 Tottenham
    85. Kehrer sends in a dangerous cross into the penalty area, and it’s begging for someone to attack it.
Instead, Sanchez gets there first to clear.
West Ham 1-1 Tottenham – West Ham substitution
    84. David Moyes sends on another of his new arrivals, although Emerson isn’t treated to the same kind of reception as Lucas Paqueta.
The former Chelsea left-back takes over from Pablo Fornals.
    West Ham 1-1 Tottenham
    83. West Ham are readying another change as Hojbjerg miscontrols on the far touchline, leading to a throw-in for the hosts.
    West Ham 1-1 Tottenham
    81. Kane bundles a shot into the arms of Fabianski, but the referee’s whistle had already gone for a foul on Zouma by Richarlison.
    West Ham 1-1 Tottenham
    79. The game has entered its final stages, and this is still there to be won.
It just needs one moment of genius – or a huge blunder.
    West Ham 1-1 Tottenham
    77. Spurs have some new impetus and win another corner on the right.
Son goes over to take it, but his delivery is awful and promptly swatted away.
It’s just not happening for last season’s top goalscorer at the moment.
West Ham 1-1 Tottenham – Tottenham substitution
    76. Here comes Richarlison!
On for Dejan Kulusevski, can the former Everton man swing another game in favour of his new club?
    West Ham 1-1 Tottenham
    75. Big, big chance for Fornals!
All alone and 15 yards out, the Spaniard gets himself on the end of a low centre from the left – but blasts it high over the crossbar.
    West Ham 1-1 Tottenham
    74. A snapshot from Son is deflected behind a defender’s foot, and it brings a corner to the visitors.
It’s one that West Ham struggle to deal with it, failing to clear the lines until Sanchez’s attempt at an overhead kick whistles wide.

West Ham 1-1 Tottenham – West Ham substitution
    72. David Moyes takes no chances.
Aaron Cresswell is off, and it signals the return of Angelo Ogbonna.
    West Ham 1-1 Tottenham
    71. Now West Ham’s Cresswell appears to have picked up a knock.
It is getting a little feisty – I can’t wait for Richarlison to come on to do some kick-ups.
    West Ham 1-1 Tottenham
    69. Suddenly, West Ham have upped the tempo, and Tottenham are looking increasingly shaky at the back.
The visitors try to play it out from Lloris, and when Sanchez gets dispossessed by Antonio, he again throws himself to the floor.
He wins a very fortunate free-kick.
West Ham 1-1 Tottenham – West Ham substitution
    67. Here he comes!
Paqueta gets a rapturous reception as he comes on for Benrahma.

Bournemouth 0 Wolves 0: Cherries keep clean sheet after shipping nine at Liverpool in first game since Parker axe

MANAGERLESS Bournemouth restored their personal pride by taking a point off Wolves at the Vitality Stadium. The Cherries showed no adverse-reaction from their Liverpool mauling which cost head coach Scott Parker his job just four games into the new season.
Managerless Bournemouth picked up a draw at Wolves after sacking Scott ParkerCredit: Reuters
But the goal-less draw was hardly a shock as these two sides have one win between them although Wolves missed a host of chances.
And yet a clean sheet could be classed as a morale-boosting feat by the Cherries who had been battered by 16 goal in their last three fixtures.
The home fans were still coming to terms with a cataclysmic 69 hours that saw the outspoken Parker dismissed after one of the worst results in the club’s history.
Parker’s interim replacement Gary O’Neill made four changes from the side walloped 9-0 at Liverpool on Saturday.

Star defender and captain Lloyd Kelly returned after injury as did last season’s top scorer Dominic Solanke.
And the big surprise for most home fans was that he chose to axe the club’s No 1 goalkeeper Mark Travers to the bench.
O’Neill probably felt it was best to take the youngster out of the harsh headlights after suffering that car crash at Anfield.
Brazilian stopper and recent signing Neto was called up for his Premier League debut at 33 years of age behind a defence that had more holes in it than a colander.

Wolves kept the same line-up that were denied their first victory by former Cherries boss Eddie Howe’s Newcastle who snatched a 1-1 draw with Allan Saint-Maximin’s 90th minute equaliser.
The Cherries were given a heart-warming welcome back to their south coast base by their supporters who know what it’s like to always be the underdog in this division.
Bournemouth appealed for a penalty after just eight minutes when Jordan Zemura went down a little too easily under Pedro Neto’s challenge but referee Anthony Taylor wasn’t fooled.
And it was Wolves who came so close to inflicting more misery on the Dorset club that had suffered three defeats in a row.
Neither side was able to find a breakthrough in the bore drawCredit: Reuters
Pedro Neto picked out Matheus Nunes whose volley on the turn beat the home goalkeeper hands down and flicked the top of the bar.
Then on 18 minutes a looping header from Raul Jimenez forced Neto to flick the ball over the top.
Neto, in spite of his experience, was no doubt feeling a little ring rusty having only made four first team appearances for Barcelona last season-and one in the EFL Cup for the Cherries.
And the Brazilian Neto was a relieved bystander two minutes later when the Portuguese Neto came so close to sticking one in his net.
The Wolves man hit a 20-yarder which swerved inches wide as the home stopper flew through the night air in hope rather than expectation.
Wolves had the better chances but Bournemouth clung on for a clean sheetCredit: Getty
Lage’s men were moving the ball around with consummate ease but once more their lack of a goal presence was letting them down in the final third.
But that problem will be eased on Saturday against Southampton when they can show-off their new giant £15.4 million striker Sasha Kalajdzic from Stuttgart.
O’Neill must have made an impact in his first half-time team-talk because Bournemouth came out of the traps with real purpose.
Wolves were backpedaling when Billing’s cross picked out Solanke but his header went straight to Jose Sa in the visitors goal.
Adam Smith’s ill-judged foul on the edge of the box on Gonçalo Guedes put the pressure back on the home side but Joao Moutinho”s free-kick was deflected wide by Kelly.

Wolves’ strike woes were highlighted when substitute Rayan Ait-Nouri’s goal-bound shot hit Jimenez who later raced clear and flicked the ball wide of Neto and the far post.
And the visitors suffered again ten minutes from time when Neto saved sub Daniel Podence’s close-range effort with his legs.

Man City 6 Forest 0: Haaland smashes ANOTHER hat-trick before Alvarez joins the party with brilliant double in rout

HE’S only been in England just over seven weeks and Erling Haaland is already re-writing the Premier League record books. On Saturday against Crystal Palace he turned the game on its head with a 19 minute hat-trick.
Erling Haaland’s stunning form continued with another hat-trick – this time against Nottingham ForestCredit: Getty
Julian Alvarez also scored twice as City crushed Forest 6-0Credit: Getty
Four days later and he had to work a bit harder for the match-ball – it took him seven minutes longer.
Nine goals in five blistering matches is the greatest start by any striker in the competition’s history.
He overtook the previous best of eight scored by Mick Quinn and a certain Sergio Aguero.
Haaland also now has the record for most goals in August in a single season – and is the quickest to two hat-tricks – by quite some distance.

Pep Guardiola said on Saturday him and his staff were already ‘completely in love’ with their £51.4 million new boy.
And no wonder. No doubt everyone of a sky blue persuasion feels the same.
His fellow new striker Julian Alvarez struck twice while Joao Cancelo was also on the scoresheet after the break as City ran riot.
But once again it was Haaland making the headlines.

If he stays injury free and Guardiola does not rotate him too much then the mind boggles over how many he could score in this team.
Already he has more than most teams in the table.
Pep had the luxury of resting Kevin de Bruyne ahead of a busy few weeks at home and in Europe – yet they hardly missed him.
Instead he paired both of his new strikers – Haaland and Alvarez – in the same starting line-up for the first time.
Considering the Argentine hot-shot’s reputation, newly-promoted Forest must have feared the worst.
Haaland’s latest treble came during an incredible first-half blitzCredit: Getty
And it was the £14 million former River Plate man who had the first chance – forcing a save from Dean Henderson as he got on the end of Rodri’s flick.
The on loan United man must have known he was in for a busy night and sure enough he was picking the ball out of the net in the 12 minutes.
Phil Foden’s chipped cross from the left took a slight deflection but fell into the path of Haaland who got ahead of Joe Worrall to stab home.
That took his tally to seven – the most by any player in a single August – but he was far from finished there.
First though, Forest could have levelled through recent signing Renan Lodl – who scored the Champions League winner against United the last time he was in town.
Alvarez joined in the fun with a second-half brace on his full debutCredit: Getty
He got on the end of a cross by Neco Williams but planted his header into the side-netting when he should at least have hit the target.
Wales international Williams should have had an assist there – but he did get one inadvertently at the other end minutes later.
Haaland put Henderson under pressure and the England hopeful made a hash of his rushed clearance.
Bernardo Silva and Gundogan worked the ball to Haaland who unselfishly played in Foden down the left.
Joao Cancelo was also on target as City ran riotCredit: Reuters
The England ace was about to shoot when Williams tackled him – but the ball rolled to the Norwegian who had the simple task of sliding home his second.
He had only touched the ball five times – and already had two goals.
Defender John Stones saw a goal ruled out for offside as Steve Cooper’s men were in danger of being overwhelmed.
But the England defender made amends by teeing up the third goal for Haaland.
Joao Cancelo’s delicious ball to the back post with the outside of his foot was put back across goal by Foden.
Pep Guardiola couldn’t resist celebrating City’s huge winCredit: Getty
Stones climbed highest at the back post to nod it into the middle and all Haaland had to do was get his head on it to claim the match-ball.
It took the club’s leading scorer Aguero over three years to get his second league hat-trick for City – this guy managed it in four days.
Demba Ba was the previous quickest to achieve the feat in 21 games – compared to Haaland’s five, or four-and-a-half.
Alvarez must feel a bit like the bridesmaid after his arrival this summer but he could have got in on the act just before the break.
His fizzing low shot from the edge of the box beat Henderson but thudded against the outside of the post.
It was a miserable day at the office for Steve Cooper’s newly-promoted sideCredit: Getty
Bernardo Silva will now stay at City after Barcelona’s interest failed to materialise and what a bonus that is for Guardiola.
The Portuguese magician found space on the right and rolled the ball back to the edge of the box where his countryman Cancelo was waiting.
He took a touch before letting fly from 20 yards and giving Henderson no chance.
All that was missing was a goal for Alvarez on his first start and it finally arrived midway through the second half.
Sub Riyad Mahrez slid the ball through and the Argentine down the right and he beat Henderson with the minimum of fuss.
Guardiola had seen enough and decided he could manage without Haaland – whipping him off for a well-earned break in the 68th minute.
    Read More on The Sun
In the dying minutes, when Mahrez saw his shot blocked, Alvarez was on hand to wallop into the top corner.
If Haaland is rested this season, then defenders will only have to worry about the Argentine….

Leeds 1 Everton 1: Sinisterra scores on full Prem debut for hosts to cancel out Gordon strike in bad-tempered clash

ANTHONY GORDON might not be worth £60million but at least he is showing up. During a summer of strikes, failing to report for duty amid transfer interest has been all the rage.
Anthony Gordon celebrates his goal for EvertonCredit: Rex
The likes of Willy Bolly and Wesley Fofana couldn’t be bothered to turn up for work as they tried to force their moves.
Yet with Chelsea refusing to give up on landing Everton hot shot Gordon, the local lad has knuckled down, done his job, and done it very well.
While he mustered just four goals in his first 52 Prem games, it’s now two in two after an expertly taken goal through Illan Meslier’s legs.
And even if this all to show Chelsea he really is worth the extortionate fee, at least his boyhood club have fair grounds to milk Chelsea for a few more quid yet.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
If he does stay on Merseyside beyond the transfer window, everything is there for him to be a Goodison hero – with the travelling fans chanting his name at the end.
Hot-headed, he charged around all night like his life depended on it – even if, on a booking, it looked like he may overstep the mark and see red.
Frank Lampard’s side are still winless after three draws from five thanks to Colombian winger Luis Sinisterra’s equaliser on his first Prem start.
But they survived a late Leeds onslaught and should have won it when Gordon played in the onrushing Nathan Patterson, only for the youngster to fire straight at Meslier.

Lampard’s night got off to a terrible start when new striker Neal Maupay was forced to miss out on a technicality.
Registered at 4pm on Friday, he was ineligible for Saturday’s draw at Brentford but supporters desperate for more firepower were told he would be unleashed at Elland Road.
But the Premier League insisted he had to be registered by noon on the last working day, which because of the bank holiday, was Friday – despite a bumper weekend of Prem ‘work’.
Lamps, who will never get anything less than a verbal onslaught from the locals in these parts, was predictably booed from all four corners as he took his place in the dugout.
The Chelsea legend knew they were in for a rough ride so demanded his side match the Whites’ “energy and aggression”.
Yet the Toffees were clinging on from the off, struggling to cope with Leeds’ ferocious tempo.
They couldn’t create anything but Everton barely had a touch in the hosts’ half in the opening 15 minutes.

With winger Demarai Gray leading the line, it looked like being a long, painful night in west Yorkshire.
And then came the Gordon sucker-punch.
Luis Sinisterra inadvertently started the move, sticking a foot in to dispossess Gordon on the left but seeing it head straight to Alexander Iwobi.
Nobody then tracked the Chelsea target and hapless Diego Llorente failed to cut out Iwobi’s through ball.
Through on goal, ice-cold Gordon megged Meslier before shushing the moody Leeds fans in the Don Revie stand for good measure.
Six minutes later and Jesse Marsch’s boys finally created something, but Rodrigo’s crafty near-post run was backed up with an airshot trying to flick home Jack Harrison’s cross.
Rodrigo, Leeds’ top scorer with four goals, was then clutching his shoulder and writhing in agony after an innocuous clash with Jordan Pickford before receiving oxygen and being replaced by Joe Gelhardt.

United had all the ball but were sloppy with it, increasingly frustrating the home crowd.
American livewire forced Pickford into a smart stop to his left just after the break – and Everton were back on the ropes.
Harrison was next, firing a great chance from 12 yards straight at the England stopper.
Yet Pickford was stranded 56 minutes in when Sinisterra sent Elland Road potty.
Aaronson drove at the visitors’ defence from halfway before playing right to the Colombian, whose low 20-yard strike around James Tarkwoski wrong-footed the keeper and nestled in the bottom corner.
Gelhardt’s run pulling defenders away was huge too, with the youngster proving once again he is the real deal.
It was all Leeds now but Gordon suddenly struck on the break and slipped in Demarai Gray, who finished past Meslier only for it to be ruled out for the tightest of offsides.

A proper ding-dong in a frenzied atmosphere, Gelhardt missed two huge opportunities to become the hero late on – before the sub was bizarrely replaced by Marsch with 14 minutes remaining.
Leeds lost their momentum but are up to fifth after amassing an impressive eight points from their opening five.

Crystal Palace 1 Brentford 1: Wissa climbs off bench to rescue point for Bees after Zaha marks return with opener

YOANE WISSA stole a late leveller for Brentford as Crystal Palace dropped two points in familiar fashion.Patrick Vieira often rued his players for dropping points late on last season and it seems he has not been able to iron it out this term.

The Eagles took a second half lead through Wilfried Zaha’s stunning goal as he continues to be linked with a move away.
It looked like another night in the limelight for Palace’s star man until Brentford’s Wissa popped up with two minutes to go after Palace has wasted a number of chances either side of Zaha’s goal.
It was the first time the Palace boss gave a start all three of Zaha, Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise together this season – a trio Eagles fans will hope they get the chance to see plenty more of.
Jeffrey Schlupp was the first to get the Palace fans off their seats.

The midfielder collected the ball on the edge of his own box and drove the length of the pitch before cutting inside and sending a low shot into the hands of David Raya.
Palace were getting into good positions down the right, with Olise driving past two light blue Brentford shirts to the edge of the box, but not taking their chances.
The former Reading man dribbled a low and comfortable shot straight into the gloves of Raya.
The Bees were struggling for clear cut chances, with Ivan Toney crossing for Zanka – who headed over from six yards but knew little about it.

Vieira’s forwards, on the other hand, were combining well as Olise found Zaha in the box.
The Ivorian managed to find space to shoot with three Bees defenders crowded around him but saw his effort blocked by Aaron Hickey.
The right-back was on hand to deny Zaha once again just before the break.
Olise’s low cross bobbled across the six-yard to Zaha at the far post who spun and shot but found the Scottish full-back for a second time.

The hosts picked up where they left off after the break.
Cheick Doucoure charged in on Vitaly Janelt to win the ball on the edge of the box.
The loose ball found Schlupp in the penalty area but his shot was, again, straight at the keeper.
It was Olise’s turn next, allowed once more to comfortably drift in from the right and bend a shot onto the foot of the far post.
That chance caused the Selhurst Park drums to beat a little louder as belief grew that we might finally get an opener – and there wasn’t long to wait.
When Palace need a goal, there is one man they always look to.

Having just about dealt with Olise cutting in from the right, there was nothing Brentford could do when Zaha did it from the left.
The winger collected it from the impressive Doucoure in midfield and squared up Hickey.
The Scot was bypassed with one flick to the right before Zaha quickly unleashed a superb effort into the top right corner.
The television cameras quickly cut to Palace chairman Steve Parish on his phone in the stands – presumably tapping away a message to Chelsea owner Todd Boehly to inform him the price had just shot up by another £10million.
He will still be keen to keep his most reliable forward in SE25, though, especially after watching Olise send another chance wide.
The Bees had struggled for clear cut chances but Frank sent on a raft of substitutes after going behind and finally one of them struck.

Janelt exchanged a swift one-two 40-yards out before whipping a cross to the far post where Wissa rose in space to nod past Vicente Guaita and leave Vieira raging.
His temper was almost tested in added time when Ben Mee headed a chance to take all three points onto the bar.

Fulham 2 Brighton 1: Seagulls miss chance to go top after Dunk’s bizarre own-goal and Mitrovic’s 100th Cottagers goal

ALEKSANDAR MITROVIC, and a calamitous Lewis Dunk own goal, finally got the Seagulls in a flap. Brighton had put the champagne on ice as a win at newly-promoted Fulham would have seen them lead the Prem for the first time in their history.

The task seemed more than doable given that they were on a blistering club-record, nine-match unbeaten top-flight run.
The squeaky clean South Coasters had also let in just one goal all term before yesterday’s tie, on the opening day against Manchester United.
But first they had to get past lethal Serbian hitman Mitrovic who is on a warpath to prove he can hack it in the top-flight.
The striker burst Brighton’s bubble with his 100th time on target in the league before Dunk steered into his own net to put Fulham firmly in the driving seat.

The visitors hit-back with an Alexis Mac Allister penalty after Bobby De Cordova-Reid appeared to have caught Pervis Estupinan in the box.
But the plucky hosts held on to earn themselves a deserved second win of the season.
On the day where ex-Fulham boss Parker was sacked from Bournemouth, it was a nice reminder to see how far the West Londoners have come under Silva, who was appointed in July last year.
Mitro, who was left wounded amid Parker’s reign the last time Fulham were in the Prem and only scored three times, has now already hit FIVE Prem goals under Silva.

Lewis Dunk can’t watch as Andreas Pereira celebrates the defender’s calamitous own goalCredit: Rex
And you can see why fans were chanting “f*** off Scotty Parker, cos we’ve got Marco Silva” having only lost one so far this season.
Both side’s oozed sex appeal from the start with their swashbuckling, forward-thinking approach.
But it was Silva’s slick stars who conjured up the first real chance thanks to Bobby De Cordova-Reid.
The Jamaica forward flashed a menacing cross in front of goal, but Joel Veltman snaffled it up before Neeskens Kebano could make the crucial touch.
Mitrovic once again worked like a pitbull-terrier to break free and bulldoze down the left-flank – but let himself down with a tame effort at Robert Sanchez.
Brighton weren’t much better up the other end, with Pascal Gross linking up with Moises Caicedo to fire straight at Bernd Leno in a sleepy first-half.
But Craven Cottage went crazy three minutes after the restart as Mitrovic brought the game to life with the much-needed opener.
Andreas Pereira’s short corner was half-cleared and fell back to Kebano who pinged a cross into the box where the Serbian striker was on standby to poke it home.
Fulham were slowly building but nobody expected them to snatch a second quite so easily.

It started with Pereira again, playing in a low ball before Dunk stuck out a leg only to fire it beyond his own keeper on 55 minutes.
It would have been an epic goal for the Brighton skipper had it not been in Fulham’s net!
Referee Thomas Bramall who was on his Prem debut was welcomed into his new role with chants of “who’s the w***er in the black?”
And it’s safe to say the home fans and players gave him hell when he was forced over to the VAR monitor to check for a penalty check to Brighton.
De Cordova Reid appeared to have caught Estupinan in the box and after a lengthy review Bramall pointed to the spot.
Mac Allister stepped up and fired in a peach of a strike to get the visitors back in it and spare Dunk’s blushes on 58 minutes.
The Seagulls were feeling the heat and Sanchez hashed up a routine Pereira corner by palming it straight to Kebano who was inches away from gabbing Fulham’s third.
Potter had seen enough and hauled off Enock Mwepu, Pervis Estupinan and Joel Veltman for a Danny Welbeck, Tariq Lamptey and Kaoru Mitoma.
Pascal Gross came close later on but Tim Ream mopped up any damage from the German before he could tap in from close-range.

The hosts survived a late onslaught as Deniz Undav wriggled into the box and rattled the post.
He was well offside in the build up and the hosts were left fuming the assistant didn’t raise his flag and instead gave a corner – but they held on.

    Tuchel reflects
A frank, honest and slightly bemused Thomas Tuchel had his say on his side’s defeat:
Obviously we are struggling with our focus and consistency in matches. We struggled to find answers and find the way back into things if things don’t go in our direction.
Things did go our way today but then we struggled after the equaliser.
I don’t know if concern is the right word. I absolutely dislike to lose, it is the second time this season and I don’t think it takes a lot to beat us and this I don’t like.
I also don’t understand why we are in this situation with injuries to our midfield.Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea boss
    Lavia opens account in style
The 18-year-old midfielder lashed home his side’s first goal from distance for his first senior goal.
    Here are his post-match thoughts:
It is an amazing feeling to bounce back from the defeat at the weekend. I have not scored in a long time, so what a feeling to score here at home and in front of my family as well.
I’ll be honest I don’t even score like that in training but today was my lucky day, it went in.
We don’t stop. It is about the spirit of the team, we always communicate and tell each other to keep pushing to the end. We are building a great core in the team, we keep building.Romeo Lavia, Southampton midfielder

    Armstrong reacts
Adam Armstrong’s first half strike proved to be the winning goal this evening.
Here’s what he had to say on the performance:
Chelsea are a tough opposition but the lads dug deep. Nights like this we won’t forget. It was frustrating on Saturday [against Manchester United] we had a few chances. That is football. We dug deep tonight… We will celebrate tonight.Adam Armstrong, Southampton forward
    A day to forget
Chelsea weren’t at the races today.
Their last stitch attempts at hunting an equaliser proved unsuccessful. With the money spent, questions will have to be answered, whilst fingers will be pointed.

    What it means
The win means Southampton draw level on points with Chelsea in the Premier League, rising to 7th from 13th.

Hassenhuttl has the biggest smile in the house as the fans drink in every moment.
The Saints were fantastic this evening, fighting for every last ball, and having the quality to finish their chances.
Chelsea looked way off the pace, lacking any kind of cohesion and structure. Fingers will be pointed at Thomas Tuchel this evening.
