    That’s all from Liverpool
Liverpool beat Ajax 2-1 in a dramatic Champions League encounter at Anfield.
The Reds opened the scoring with Mohamed Salah, who broke his duck in the competition after just 17 minutes.
Luis Diaz beat Jurrien Timber in the air to win a long ball by Alisson and that allowed Diogo Jota to gain possession and pass to his right for the unmarked Salah, who beat Remko Pasveer with a clinical shot.
But Ajax equalised just 10 minutes later when a clever through ball by Daley Blind played Steven Berghuis behind Liverpool’s backline.
Berghuis cut back inside the area where Steve Bergwijn left the ball for Mohammed Kudus, who beat Alisson with a powerful shot after he rattled the post.
But Liverpool wouldn’t be denied as Joel Matip, who put together a stunning performance, scored the winner just one minute before full-time.
Kostas Tsimikas, who also stood out, delivered a pinpoint corner-kick from the left and found Matip who headed the ball over the line before Jorge Sanchez cleared it.

    Jurgen Klopp reacts
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp praised his players for putting together a “complete different shift” than the one they did at Napoli.
Klopp told BT Sport: “We had to put a complete different shift into the game. We played a lot of good stuff against a hard fighting opponent.
“It’s another test and everyone was hoping it goes in the right direction. The pressing before the goal was good. A little bit more intensity. Was clear we had to go back to how we started.
“The pressure we put on, finally one of the many set-pieces we had led to the goal. Nice.
“Nothing is over. It is a first step but a very important one. Now we have a strange break. Pretty long. We have to hope and pray the boys come back healthy”

    Liverpool’s standout players
Liverpool picked up a last-gasp 2-1 win over Ajax at Anfield with stars like Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz and Thiago Alcantara putting together a very good performance.
But two other players seemed to have been a little more crucial against the Dutch champions.
Joel Matip was rock-solid at the back and proved to be very critical in the build-up of the Reds’ attacks as he moved the ball very well before scoring the winner.
And it was Kostas Tsimikas who created that goal after a stunning performance that saw him dominate down the left and produce a number of pinpoint crosses

    That’s all from us
We hope you enjoyed our coverage of tonight’s enthralling clash between Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
Both teams gave their all, but in the end Bayern’s clinical finishing made all the difference.
We’ll be back with more Champions League coverage tomorrow night and we hope you will tune in for that with us.
Thanks a lot and take care everyone.
Leroy Sané’s game by numbers vs. Barcelona:
    91% pass accuracy
    47 touches
    8 touches in opp. box
    6x possession won
    3 duels won
    2 chances created
    2 shots – 1 on target
    1 goal
    Xavi quotes:
The Barcelona manager was pretty angry after falling to defeat against Bayern.
On Spanish TV he said: “When you don’t take your chances in Champions (League), you pay for it.
“We were the better team, had six or seven clear chances, and Bayern don’t miss theirs.
“First goal was a mistake in marking at a corner, the second we had to make a foul.
“But we have to learn to compete like Bayern do.”
    Stat pack
    Expected Goals: Bayern (1.58) 2-0 (1.98) Barcelona
Bayern are now unbeaten in their last 30 Champions League group stage games: 27 wins, 3 draws.
Julian Nagelsmann becomes the first manager to win his first three Champions League games against Barcelona.
Bayern have now won more Champions League games against Barcelona (9) than any other team they have faced in the competition.
Barcelona failed to score against Bayern Munich but had an xG of 2, becoming the team with the worst differential between their goals scored and expected goals in a Champions League game this season (-2).
    Up next
Barcelona will travel to the San Siro to face Inter as the first of their doubleheader against the Serie A giants.
In all likelihood, these two teams are duking it out for second place in the group, and Xavi will be keen to avoid another embarrassing exit from the Champions League group stage.
The next two games will be pivotal to Group C’s final appearance before it finishes at the start of November.
Bayern will firstly host group whipping boys Viktoria Plzen before travelling to them on matchday four expecting to pick up the full six points and rack up an impressive goal difference in the process.
    Noteworthy performers
Dayot Upamecano showed why is one of the most highly rated defenders out of the Bundesliga with an imperious and faultless display.
The attack really came to life in the second half, with Sane and Musiala particularly impressive after the interval.
Barcelona were good as a collective in the first half, and then worse off as a collective in the second, but Dembele looked like he could create something whenever he was on the ball.
The Blaugrana will have better days and they will learn from their experience tonight.
    A tale of two halves
Barcelona looked back to their best days in the first half as they dominated the ball and had the lion’s share of the best chances.
However, a lack of ruthlessness paired with defensive heroics from Bayern kept the score level going into the interval.
It was then that Bayern finally bore their fangs, and scored twice in as many minutes.
Hernandez’s front post header and Sane’s deft finish put Bayern two goals to the good and from then on it was the German side who showed their maturity and know how to see out the game.
It was not the stroll in the park it was last year for them, but Bayern ultimately prove why they remain one of the best team’s around, while Barcelona prove they still have some way to go before they can call themselves the finished article.
    FULL-TIME
    Bayern Munich 2-0 Barcelona
    Bayern Munich 2-0 Barcelona
90+3. Lewandowski denied another chance to score.
A cross is clipped into the area as Fati competes against three defenders, but somehow causes enough confusion to create a loose ball.
Lewandowski is there but Kimmich smashes the ball away before he has the chance to connect.
    Bayern Munich 2-0 Barcelona
    89. Ferran Torres does brilliantly to retain the ball and keep a Barcelona attack alive as he goes to the byline before dropping a pass into open space on the edge of the area.
However, no one is on his wavelength and Bayern bring the ball away.
    Bayern Munich 2-0 Barcelona
    87. Ansu Fati dribbles superbly into the penalty area but runs into traffic from his own team.
Lewandowski then takes the ball and fires a shot towards goal, but it squirms harmlessly wide of the far post.
    Bayern Munich 2-0 Barcelona
    79. The free-kick from Alonso hits the wall, and after the ball is played back in Eric Garcia, who has just come on to replace Christensen, is flagged offside.
Sane is then replaced for Tels – who became the club’s youngest ever Bundesliga goalscorer at the weekend.
However, the ex-Man City star is livid at the decision – maybe not all is well in the Bayern camp.
    Bayern Munich 2-0 Barcelona
    78. Lewandowski wins a free-kick on the edge of the area.
This could be a chance to get back in the game for Barcelona.
Alonso and Lewandowski standing over it.
    Bayern Munich 2-0 Barcelona
    75. Pedri receives the ball from Dembele as the spare man on the left flank.
But Bayern shift the defence over well and force Pedri to turn the ball over.
However, it has to be said Pedri didn’t do himself any favours there with how slow he was.
    Bayern Munich 2-0 Barcelona
    70. Sadio Mane makes way as the fourth Bayern Munich change.
A quiet night for the former Liverpool man, who will be somewhat disappointed with his performance.
Gnabry comes on for the final stretch of the game.
    Bayern Munich 2-0 Barcelona
    68. Upamecano thwarts Barca again.
Dembele makes a dazzling run down the right flank and cuts infield past a number of Bayern defenders.
But Dembele’s attempted final pass is thumped away by Upamecano, before he intercepts another Barca attack just seconds later.
He has been a stalwart tonight.
    Bayern Munich 2-0 Barcelona
    66. De Jong finds room in the half-space just inside the penalty area and plays a diminutive pass into Lewandowski’s path.
But his shot is weak and Neuer easily collects it.
    Bayern Munich 2-0 Barcelona
    63. PEDRI HITS THE POST
    So close for Barcelona.
Pedri jinks his way infield before a Bayern defender gets a leg on the ball, but the loose ball falls to Lewandowski on the edge of the area.
He then plays the ball into the space Pedri has now occupied and upon receiving the ball he dinks a shot over Manuel Neuer.
But it ends up hitting the post.
They’ve done everything so far except hit the back of the net.
    Bayern Munich 2-0 Barcelona
    61. Xavi rolls the dice to try and get his team back in the game.
He brings on De Jong as Torres in favour of Gavi and Raphinha.
But either side of this change Bayern create two more chances to score, with the latter squirming just wide of the post.
    Barcelona are crumbling here.
    54. Barcelona are crumbling here.
Musiala and Sane run an identical line towards the penalty area before the teenagers plays the ball into Sane’s path.
He then dribbles into the area and pokes the ball past the onrushing Ter Stegen to make it 2-0 to the hosts.
    Bayern Munich 2-0 Barcelona
    GOALLLLL
    SANE DOUBLES THE LEAD
    Bayern make the breakthrough
    51. Kimmich whips the corner to the front post, where Hernandez proves himself stronger in the air.
His first home goal for Bayern, and now they have the wind in their sails.
    Bayern Munich 1-0 Barcelona
    GOALLLLL
    HERNANDEZ PUTS BAYERN AHEAD
    Bayern Munich 0-0 Barcelona
    50. Good save Ter Stegen.
Bayern work the ball well from flank to flank before Goretzka fires a shot at goal.
But Ter Stegen pushes it away for a corner.

    Spurs make perfect start
Tottenham find themselves second in the group by goal difference.
After beating 10-man Marseille 2-0 in their opening match, Conte will be looking to continue their form in Portugal.
The North London side did look indifferent at times and with the enforced rest recently should be firing on all cylinders tonight.
    The Lions can still roar
While Antonio Conte’s side will be huge favourites this evening, Sporting hammered Frankfurt 3-0 in their opening game.
They sit top of the group on goal difference.
Former Tottenham youngster, Marcus Edwards, stole the spotlight with a goal and an assist in the game and may have a point to prove tonight against a side he failed to make the grade at.
    Spurs favourites to dominate group
Sporting’s coach has spoken about how he sees this season’s Champions League excpectations:
Tottenham are clear favourites in the group, they are a team that have one of the best attacks in the world with a winning coach in Italy and England and world-class players.Ruben AmorimSporting manager
    Conte has added backbone
Tottenham fans rarely are able to enjoy an unbeaten start to the season, Antonio Conte appears to have address their often-crumbling spine of the team and made them difficult to beat.
Coming back from 2-0 down against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge to draw 2-2 late on shows how the Italian’s side have a fire inside them to win any game.
It is resulting in the North London outfit proving very difficult to beat, something Man City may have been happy to avoid until later in the season right now.
    Italian coach bemoans demands
The Tottenham coach gave his thoughts on what is being asked of his players in a season with a World Cup in Qatar thrown into the middle of it:
When you play every three days, you run the risk of having more injuries and less energy. The postponement of the game against [Man] City has allowed me to change the idea of the team I had in mind for the game.Antonio ConteTottenham coach
Brazilian to make history in Lisbon
If Richarlison scores a double this evening, he would become only the second player in Champions League history to do so in the opening two games of the tournament.
The last person to do so was Diego Simeone of Atletico Madrid.
He scored in a 4-0 win over Steua Bucharest before repeating the feat in a 4-1 victory over Widzew Lodzin.
    Welcome to Sporting vs Tottenham
Antonio Conte takes his Tottenham side to Lisbon this evening having had a rare weekend break from Premier League action after the death of Queen Elizabeth II, with a country in morning for the long-serving monarch.
The Italian said “I want to give condolences from me, from the club, from the players to the Royal Family. Then football has to go ahead and we will do it, but I think the Premier League made an important decision to stop football and show respect for the death of the Queen.”
Lucas Moura will miss the game for Tottenham and has not travelled, while Bryan Gil will fill in for the Brazilian who has struggled to shake off recent injury.
Jeremiah St Juste had to be taken off with a muscular problem against Frankfurt and is a big doubt for this evening’s encounter.
Goncalo Inacio and Luis Neto added to Sporting’s defensive woes when they were forced off early in their league game on the weekend, although the latter was more precautionary.
Clement Lenglet and Richarlison will be hoping to condemn Dejan Kulusevski and Ben Davies to the bench in Portugal.
Jovan Cabral is out for The Lions but Paulinho is back in contention to feature.

    McBroom update

He’s awake and looks like he knows where he is, so hopefully those five knockdowns haven’t left any damage.
Gib is already away to his dressing room saying he’s going for some “fried chicken”.
After a fairly forgettable undercard, that main event went off.

A day of mixed emotions. Lando was able to finish inside the points. Unfortunately, Daniel suffered an oil leak which led to his retirement. We’ll take what we can from this race and apply it to the next one. #ItalianGP 🇮🇹 pic.twitter.com/QCacbXA38i— McLaren (@McLarenF1) September 11, 2022

De Vries driver of the day
Fully deserved after an excellent debut race!

Title could be secured next race
With the lead Verstappen has opened up, the title could be secured as soon as next race if things go his way.
    Boos for Verstappen
Clearly disgruntled Italian fans hardly give Verstappen a warm welcome to the podium, but he wont care as the Dutch national anthem plays again.

In his post-race interview with Sky Sports, the Ferrari driver expressed his frustration that he couldn’t push for the win at the end.
    Verstappen’s dominance continues
Despite starting in 7th, it took him just a couple of laps to be pushing for the lead again, and before the safety car was cruising to a win at Monza.
It’s his first podium at this track.
    Fantastic debut for De Vries
What a performance by the Dutchman on debut!
He finishes P9 on his first appearance in F1, what a weekend for him!
Leclerc and Russell complete the podium
We could’ve been in for a grandstand finish, but Leclerc will have to settle for 2nd in his home race.
Russell will be perhaps thankful for the safety car, as Sainz was gaining on the Englishman at some rate.
    Verstappen wins the Italian GP!
Despite the late safety car, it was a dominant win for Verstappen from 7th on the grid!
Boos ring out around Monza but it’s now 30 career wins for the Dutchman!

Lap 45/53 – Sainz catching Russell

Sainz just lapped 1.5 seconds quicker than Russell, and has just over nine seconds to make up on the Mercedes in third.
Lap 43/53 – Perez pits late
Hamilton was catching Perez into 5th, so he pits for softs and comes out in 7th.
Lap 42/53 – Lovely overtake from Schumacher
A great overtake from Schumacher takes him past Latifi, with the pair enjoying a great battle throughout the lap.
    Lap 41/53 – Stroll retires
The afternoon gets even worse for Aston Martin, as it’s a double DNF for them.

The Dutchman has enjoyed a stellar debut race today, and he is currently holding onto 10th and a points finish.
