A brace from Maddison and goals from Barnes and Daka secured the victory as Rodgers looks to clamber out of the relegation zone step by step.
Thank you for reading and goodbye.
Rodgers backs Maddison for England call-up
Brendan Rodgers discussed Maddison’s qualities and his absence from the latest England squad:
It’s such a shame for the country and for James, you see his talent. His performance level for the last 18 months I think everyone is clear on. I think only Harry Kane has created and scored more goals than him. International football is the personality to take the ball and be creative and change the game and James is all of that. He’s an absolutely brilliant player and I really hope that over these next few months he can continue the form he’s shown and somehow get into the [England] team.Brendan Rodgers, Leicester boss

    Rodgers reacts
When asked about how it felt to win for the first time this season, here’s what the Leicester boss had to say:
It’s been too long, to be honest. We were excellent tonight, the intensity, the pressing. It’s a great night for the players and the supporters. I said before the match that it could be a season-changing game.
We’ve played well with the ball this season, but against the ball in key moments we haven’t defended well. Tonight, we did that and we got our first clean sheet, which is important.Brendan Rodgers, Leicester boss
    Leicester’s next five fixtures
The Foxes look to be entering a kind run of games. Can they build on today’s win and jump up the table?

    Bournemouth (A)
    Crystal Palace (H)
    Leeds (H)
    Wolves (A)
    Manchester City (H)

Here’s where they stand after today’s result:

Leeds 0 Aston Villa 0: Under-pressure Gerrard frustrated as Villa fail to break down ten-man hosts after Sinisterra red

AT LEAST Steven Gerrard could have claimed this was a decent point if Leeds had kept all their players on the pitch. The Aston Villa boss would have taken anything after three defeats on the road this season.
Luis Sinisterra was red carded in the second halfCredit: Reuters
Steven Gerrard was frustrated by the actionCredit: Reuters
But considering they had over 40 minutes against 10 men following Luis Sinisterra’s red card, this has to go down as another case of the away days blues.
Up and running to make it three unbeaten, yes.
Yet even before Sinisterra was shown a second yellow for blocking a free-kick from a couple of yards, Villa were the better side.
Mind you, that’s not saying much given how poor a spectacle this was.
    READ MORE FOOTBALL NEWS
Leeds had barely created anything before going a man down so it was surely only a matter of time.
However, other than Philippe Coutinho’s audacious volley smashing the woodwork straight after Sinisterra’s red, Gerrard’s boys barely looked like scoring.
The hosts defended for their lives yet Villa fans will be wondering how, given the supposed array of attacking talent at Gerrard’s disposal, they failed to leave with three points.
Ollie Watkins really should have stuck the rebound away after Coutinho’s volley, and Illan Meslier did well to deny him late on.

But other than that, despite all the ball, they couldn’t break Leeds down.
Whites boss Jesse Marsch watched from the press box as he served a one-game touchline ban for a red card at Brentford last time out.
Assistant Rene Maric was in the dugout opposite Gerrard, ditching the club tracksuit for a hoodie and jeans for his moment in the spotlight.
That 5-2 hammering in west London was a month ago, leaving Whites fans unsure how their side would respond after such a long gap.
There is plenty of edge between both teams thanks to John McGinn forcing Leeds youngster Archie Gray off on a stretcher in pre-season following a horror tackle in Australia.
A predictably feisty start ensued yet genuine chances were at a premium in a tetchy yet scrappy game.
Ollie Watkins forced Illan Meslier into an unconvincing stop with the first shot on target.
At the other end, Rodrigo was milimetres away from bundling the lively Luis Sinisterra’s low cross home before he bent a stinger just wide moments later.
The match was a brutal affairCredit: AFP
Villa wrestled control of this slugfest by half-time – there were 18 fouls and four yellows in the opening half – with Meslier on hand to deny Watkins again and Leon Bailey.
But as a spectacle this was a huge anti-climax coming after nine goals in the Manchester Derby earlier on yesterday afternoon.
Frustrated Sky Sports pundit Roy Keane summed it up at the break, saying: “There’s a bit of needle going on, but in terms of quality it’s been dreadful.”
Normally a goal would liven up such a shoddy game, but with the chances of that slim, a red card looked the likeliest thing to spark this one into life.
And that moment duly arrived within three minutes of the restart when Sinisterra – already on a yellow for a clumsy tackle on McGinn – was given his marching orders by Stuart Attwell.
As Douglas Luiz tried to take a quick free-kick from inside his own half, the Colombian stood three yards away and stuck his leg out to block it.
A perplexed Sinisterra refused to leave the pitch, Jesse Marsch’s head was in his hands and the home fans were outraged – but it was an obvious booking.
So with over 40 minutes against 10 men, could Gerrard’s boys claim their first win – let alone point – on their travels this season?
    Read More on The Sun
The Brummies upped the ante immediately and the previously anonymous Coutinho clattered Leon Bailey’s cross off the woodwork with an outrageous volley.
Watkins should have buried the rebound but couldn’t sort his feet out in time, while he was then denied by Meslier late on when the French stopper rushed off his line to narrow the angle.

ERLING HAALAND has smashed a Premier League record, after bagging three home hat-tricks in a row.Phil Foden has also landed a treble, with his goals coming after United’s defence was caught dozing.
Premier League top scorer Haaland has become the first top flight player to score consecutive hat-tricks at home.
Antony and Anthony Martial have scored for United, who may have avoided a repeat of their 6-1 humiliation in 2011.

    Ten Hag shows Ronaldo ‘respect’
Erik ten Hag has responded to questions from the press regarding his decision not to use Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Portuguese legend remained on the Manchester United bench despite the Red Devils making five substitutions at the Etihad.
But afterwards Ten Hag revealed that he did not want to insult the striker by introducing him with United already 4-0 down to their rivals.
The Dutch coach said it was ‘out of respect for his big career’ that he kept the 37-year-old out of the action.

    City close gap on leaders
Unbeaten Manchester City once again narrowed Arsenal’s lead at the top to one point after dismantling rival Manchester United.
Pep Guardiola’s reigning champions already have a positive goal difference of 20.
United remain sixth after their four-game winning streak was brought crudely to an end.

    Haaland goes on smashing records
Not many players have scored three Premier League hat-tricks.
Among those that did bag at least three trebles, it took Michael Owen 48 games, Ruud van Nistelrooy 59, Fernando Torres 64, Andrew Cole 65 and Luis Suarez 71.
It has taken Erling Haaland just eight games.
    Eriksen honest in derby assessment
Christian Eriksen has pulled no punches in his post-match interview, labelling Manchester United’s performance as ‘unacceptable’.
It was a very, very bad day at the office. We started on the wrong foot, they had chances straight from the kick-off, and we can only blame ourselves for not coming into the game at any point. We missed a bit of courage to play out from the back. It was unacceptable.Christian EriksenSky Sports

    Erling a touch of class
Erling Haaland had just 35 touches in the Manchester derby, but only needed three to ensure that he bagged a hat-trick for the third Premier League home game in a row.

    Haaland loving life at City
Erling Haaland struck another three goals for Manchester City, and then afterwards told Sky Sports’ Geoff Shreeves that he thoroughly enjoys how his team are set up to play.
The Norwegian was even able to share a smile with his fellow hat-trick hero Phil Foden, joking that he’d expect them each to receive a match ball after their respective trebles.
We always want to go forward. We always want to attack and this is what I love about the team. It’s amazing, there’s nothing more to say.Erling HaalandSky Sports

    Match stats from the Etihad
An absurd afternoon that provided nine goals, four goalscorers, 34 attempts on goal and over 1000 passes.

    Goals galore at the Etihad
In fact, today’s game has featured the most goals ever scored in a single Manchester derby.

Full time – Man City 6-3 Man Utd
Well, Manchester United won the second half!
A stunning 6-3 scoreline in the Manchester derby doesn’t tell the true story of two sides miles apart in confidence, ability and togetherness.
    Man City 6-3 Man Utd
90+1. In the first of two minutes of stoppage time, Anthony Martial bags his second to add a gloss of respectability to the scoreline.
It’s an absolutely brilliant penalty from Martia, who opens up his body and sidefoots high into the top right corner. No chance Ederson!

Man City 6-2 Man Utd – Penalty to Man Utd!
    89. Martial tricks Cancelo into making a lunge just inside the penalty area, and Michael Oliver points straight to the spot.
    Man City 6-2 Man Utd
    87. Antony has sight of goal inside of the box, but his curler towards the near post is weak.
The Brazilian is clearly better when twice as far out.
    Man City 6-2 Man Utd
    85. City almost add a seventh.
However, Alvarez is unable to control a centre, and then Laporte is off target with his header.
    Man City 6-2 Man Utd
    84. United cut the deficit to five again with another consolation.
City switch off at the back momentarily, and the visitors pounce.
One substitute, Fred, has his shot pushed out by Edersen, but another – Anthony Martial – follows in to head home.
It’s a goalscoring return for the Frenchman but does not mask a dark day for Manchester United.

    Man City 6-1 Man Utd
    82. Inside the final ten minutes, and it’s become a procession for City.
Mind you, it’s been that way since the half-hour mark.
Man City 6-1 Man Utd – Bruno Fernandes yellow card
    79. As predictable as night following day, Bruno Fernandes goes into the book for a show of petulance.
The Portuguese playmaker is cautioned for saying too much after being adjudged to have fouled Akanji.
    Man City 6-1 Man Utd
    77. You feel the fallout at Old Trafford will be long and intense after this contest.
Their fans are furious, and they have every right to be so.
Man City 6-1 Man Utd – Man City substitutions
    75. As the home fans celebrate in the stands, Pep Guardiola winds up for a quadruple substitution.
On come Aymeric Laporte, Riyad Mahrez, Cole Palmer and Julian Alvarez; off go Ilkay Gundogan, Jack Grealish, Kevin De Bruyne and – one hat-trick hero – Phil Foden.
    Man City 6-1 Man Utd
    74. ‘We want ten!’ sing the Manchester City fans, a throwback to a Second Division game in 1987 when they Huddersfield 10-1 and three of their players – Tony Adcock, Paul Stewart and David White – all grabbed hat-tricks.
    Man City 6-1 Man Utd
    72. Make that four hat-tricks for City players in Manchester derbies!
Phil Foden follows Erling Haaland into the history books by completely his treble!
The United defence disappear again as Haaland shrugs off an opponent to poke a pass through.
Foden keeps himself on side, and then keeps his cool to rocket his third past David de Gea.

Man City 5-1 Man Utd – Man Utd substitution
    70. A final change for United as Fred comes on for Jadon Sancho.
    Man City 5-1 Man Utd
    68. Erling Halland has become the third player to score a hat-trick for City in a Manchester derby.
The Norwegian joins Francis Lee, who did so in December 1970, and Horace Barnes, way back in October 1921.

“I have no idea [about the penalty]”
“It’s nicer for Max to get the win in Japan.”
    Leclerc: “It was difficult”
“I pushed all the way. The bad start put us on the back foot.”
    Sainz: “Delighted for the team”
“Never really got into a rhythm.”
“The good thing is I didn’t make any mistakes.”
“It’s crazy how long it takes here to dry.”
    Mercedes far from happy
Russell was never likely to gain points today, but it’s particularly a disappointing race for Hamilton.
After starting third, he finishes in 9th.
    Ferrari holding out for penalty
Of course, Perez is still under investigation, and the Ferrari mechanics think it might be up to 10 seconds for the penalty.
Leclerc finished 7 seconds behind the Red Bull.
    Great weekend for McLaren
Lando Norris comes home in 4th, with a fantastic finish for Daniel Ricciardo as he crosses the line in 5th.
A massive win for them in the battle for fourth in the Constructors.
    Perez’s finest hour?
Wow, what a win for the Mexican. With horrible conditions and safety cars aplenty, it was a classy drive to take the win.
He is followed on the podium by Leclerc and Sainz.
SERGIO PEREZ WINS THE SINGAPORE GP!
Final lap – Perez opens up lead up front
With the risk of a penalty coming, Leclerc is now over 6 seconds behind Perez.
2 minutes to go – Verstappen overtakes Hamilton!
A mistake from Hamilton when trying to overtake the Aston Martin, and as he goes wide Verstappen eases past into 8th.
3 minutes to go – Vettel defending well
The only battle really out here in the final few minutes if between these three, with Vettel doing well to stay 7th for now.
5 minutes to go – Vettel involved in the fight
Three World Champions are scrapping here, with Vettel currently holding off Hamilton, who is doing the same to Verstappen.
7 minutes to go – Verstappen and Hamilton fighting
It’s like 2021 all over again with these two fighting, although this time it’s for 8th place.
    Verstappen is 0.5 second behind.
8 minutes to go – Russell hunting for fastest lap
Way off the points, Russell has pitted for soft tyres in an attempt to snatch the fastest lap point from either Red Bull or Ferrari.
11 minutes to go – Mammoth weekend for McLaren
In a weekend where both Alpine’s have retired, a P4 and P5 for McLaren would do wonders for the battle for fourth in the Constructor’s Championship.
14 minutes to go – Perez to be investigated post race
    Well, well, well.
A safety car infringement could see things all change after the race today…
18 minutes to go – Perez away from Leclerc
1.4 seconds is now the gap between the top two, with Perez seemingly away from the Ferrari.
20 minutes to go – Verstappen making moves
The Dutchman is playing catch up now, but he is up to 11th.
Leclerc is still working on Perez up the front.
22 minutes to go – Fantastic battle at the front
    This is seriously impressive racing.
Leclerc is 0.4 seconds behind Perez with just over 20 minutes to go.
24 minutes to go – Perez sets fastest lap
Whatever issue the car has, Perez seems to be dealing with them as he puts in the fastest lap of the race.
26 minutes to go – Norris smells a podium
It’s been a tough race for Sainz today, and he now has Norris chasing him for the final place on the podium.
27 minutes to go – DRS enabled
Leclerc is getting closer and closer…
28 minutes to go – Big fight at the front
Perez had been under no pressure all race, but is now in trouble with Leclerc pushing.
The Mexican has been on the radio to claim he is feeling some issues.
30 minutes to go – Leclerc gaining on the lead!
Wow, the restart has been brilliant for the Ferrari, as he is less than a second behind Perez!
31 minutes to go: Puncture for Russell
Contact with a Haas has seemingly given Russell a puncture at the back of the grid.

Crystal Palace 1-2 Chelsea LIVE RESULT: Gallagher scores screamer against former side to win it for Blues – reaction

CONOR GALLAGHER came back to haunt Crystal Palace in the cruelest possible fashion. The England Under-21 star fired in a screamer from 25 yards to take all three points in the last minute.
Earlier, Palace had taken the lead through Odsonne Edouard.
Then Chelsea could have had Thiago Silva sent off for handling the ball when he was the last man in a one-on-one situation.
Brazil veteran Silva, 38, then turned creator as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang turned and finished brilliantly for an equaliser.
Cue Gallagher, 22 – who was so superb for the Eagles on loan last season – sticking the knife in with a last-gasp clincher.

    That’s all from us…
That is all for SunSport’s coverage of Crystal Palace 1-2 Chelsea.
It was a great game, which had it all, including Aubameyang’s first Chelsea goal, and a Conor Gallagher screamer on his return to Selhurst Park.
The game also saw Thiago Silva narrowly escape a red card after he slapped the ball, which saw a VAR review go in his favour.
That win sees Chelsea go to 5th in the table, but if Manchester United manage to beat Man City tomorrow they could drop to 6th.
Thank you as always for reading, we hope you enjoyed, and have a great evening!
    Potential red cards?
There were arguably two red cards that should have been dished out in the first half of the game, but neither of them were given.
Odsonne Edouard was already on a yellow, when he bundled Kepa to the ground to stop him from taking a quick goal kick, but the referee decided to seemingly let him off and continue playing.
Just after this, Thiago Silva tried to bring down Ayew, and then grabbed the ball with his hands, but escaped with a yellow card due to being a good distance away from his own goal.
Fortunate really for Chelsea, as he went on to assist Aubameyang’s opener for the visitors.
Thiago Silva was lucky to escape with a yellow card against Crystal Palace.Credit: AFP
    Some fun facts…
There were a number of talking points about this game, so here are a few of them rounded up…

Last season at Selhurst Park, Chelsea secured the winner in the 89th minute, which happened again today.
Chelsea have now won 10 games in a row against Crystal Palace.
Christian Pulisic came off the bench to assist Conor Gallagher’s winner, which further proves his good run of games against Palace.

    You never forget your first…
That saying will certainly ring true for Conor Gallagher and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang this afternoon, as they both scored beauties to secure their first goals in a Chelsea shirt.
Auba swiveled inside the box and smashed a volley into the back of the net to secure the equaliser.
But it was Conor Gallagher who stole the show late on, with a curling effort from outside the box in the 89th minute that was unstoppable, it almost seemed like destiny.
Conor Gallagher stole the show with a screamer for Chelsea against Crystal Palace.Credit: AP
    What a game…
    Wow.
    That game had it all.
Two potential red cards, not given, a brilliant atmosphere which is guaranteed at Selhurst Park, an Aubameyang volley AND a Gallagher screamer to win the game at the death.
Chelsea overturned a 1-0 deficit away to Crystal Palace, thanks to goals from Pierre Emerick Aubameyang and Conor Gallagher, who came off the bench to score on his return to Selhurst Park.
It is a huge first win for Graham Potter in his first Premier League game in charge of The Blues, who now overtake Fulham and Manchester United to sit 5th in the Premier League.
    FT. Crystal Palace 1-2 Chelsea.
The referee calls a close to this spectacular game of football.
Chelsea come away with all three points thanks to Conor Gallagher’s beautiful first goal for Chelsea.
    90+2. Crystal Palace 1-2 Chelsea.
We are into the second of four added minutes at Selhurst Park.
Chilwell clears his lines and Chelsea will look to hold possession and see this one out.
    90. Crystal Palace 1-2 Chelsea.
    What a goal.
We said earlier that the script could be written for a scoring return to Selhurst Park, and it looks like we were right…
Christian Pulisic sets him up Gallagher outside the box, and he bends an absolute beauty into the top right corner.
Wow. The 89th minute again, deja vu for Palace.
    89. Crystal Palace 1-2 Chelsea.
THE SCRIPT IS WRITTEN. CONOR GALLAGHER SCORES A SCREAMER!
    87. Crystal Palace 1-1 Chelsea.
It must be said that Palace are looking the more likely side to grab a winner here in this one.
The Chelsea substitutes have failed to really add an injection of pace into the game.
Kovacic gets a yellow card for a tactical foul on Michael Olise.
    85. Crystal Palace 1-1 Chelsea.
Crystal Palace get a flurry of corners, as they look to take advantage of Mateta’s height in the middle.
He does win the latest corner, but it is over the crossbar and it will be a goal kick for Chelsea.
    82. Crystal Palace 1-1 Chelsea.
Wilfried Zaha does really well down the right hand side again, but still no goal for Palace.
Will Hughes and Mateta are on for Palace, in replacement of Edouard and Doucoure.
Christian Pulisic comes on for Mason Mount, don’t forget about his record against The Eagles, he could prove the difference.
    80. Crystal Palace 1-1 Chelsea.
Zaha does well to get a cross into the middle, but nothing comes of it for Palace.
Gallagher looks to play a long ball into Broja, but Tomkins does well to stop it.
The Blues look to counter and the ball is played to Sterling, but he takes a heavy touch in the box and the chance is lost for Chelsea.
    78. Crystal Palace 1-1 Chelsea.

    ‘Really really special’
Charles Leclerc topped the timesheets this afternoon, earning his ninth pole position of the season.
After qualifying, he told Sky Sports: “An amazing crowd and it’s great to see so many people attending the event, it’s been a very tricky qualifying, Q1, Q2 with the inters then in Q3 we didn’t really know what to do we went for the softs at the very last minute and it paid off.
“I thought we wouldn’t get pole but it paid off and I’m really happy.
“I’m very happy with today considering the Friday that we had, we had very limited laps but we recovered well, we don’t have much data for the race run but if we do the perfect execution I’m sure we can win.”
“It [the final lap] was really really special, every qualifying in street tracks are super on the limit, the more when it’s damp like that and certain part of the track are wet when you lose the rear but overall I managed to do a clean lap and it worked well.”

‘Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day’
Lewis Hamilton earned his first top-three qualifying finish of the season this afternoon.
The seven-time World Champion was thrilled with the result, but he hopes that the team will go one step further by winning tomorrow’s race.
He told Sky Sports: “I was pushing so hard, I was so close I was trying so hard, these guys are so quick, but I thought maybe with the perfect lap we could be fighting for first place but I just didn’t have the grip in the last lap.
“But I’m grateful to be on the second row and for the team to continue to push, hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.
“We knew the car would be stronger than it was in Monza but we didn’t know how close we would be, to lose out just by that bit, it’s ok but we will just get up and fight again tomorrow.”

    Verstappen reacts to Q3 mishap
When speaking to Sky Sports, the Dutchman said: “They told me to abort so I thought okay I’ll do that but then on the final lap, they told me to box and then I realised what was going to happen and we ran out of fuel.
“That’s just incredibly frustrating and shouldn’t happen. And even when you under fuel it – you track that throughout the session – you’re not going to make it and we should’ve seen that clearly.
“Not happy at the moment. It’s a team effort. I can make mistakes and the team can make mistakes but it’s never acceptable. Of course you learn from it but this is really bad shouldn’t happen.”

BREAKING: Hamilton expected to be fined
Lewis Hamilton is expected to be hit with a fine for breaking F1’s bling ban.
The Mercedes ace has been called to the stewards at the Singapore Grand Prix relating to a breach of Appendix L, Chapter III of the FIA International Sporting Code.
That relates to a driver’s helmet, clothing and jewellery – an item that new FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has promised to get strict on.
His ban on jewellery threatened to overshadow the Miami, Monaco and British GPs earlier this year, as Hamilton refused to remove his nose stud.
However, the Brit eventually backed down and removed the offending piercing in Silverstone and in the subsequent races.
Yet in Singapore, he was wearing the stud in a morning PR event and while it is currently unknown if he was still wearing it for third practice, it could be the item has triggered the call from the stewards’ office.
However, the stud appeared to still be in his nose as he wore his helmet while sat in his car in the garage.
If he is found to be guilty, he will be fined and warned about removing the nose stud in future.

Christian Horner responds to cost-cap claims
When speaking to Sky Sports, the Red Bull boss said: “We were a little bit taken aback by comments that were coming from two of our rival teams yesterday.
“The submission between the team and the FIA is one that is confidential.
“I have no idea what the outcome of our rivals’ submissions are, or their accounting treatment or so on, so I would be intrigued to know where their source of information for these fictitious claims have come from.”
He added: “The (comments from other teams) are hugely defamatory, and we take umbrage to them.
“One can only assume it’s uncoincidental that this is at a point where Max has his first strike at the world championship.
“How on earth do they have this information? Where do they have this knowledge? The FIA have even stated that they haven’t even completed their process.
“So unless there is a clear withdrawal of those statements, we will be taking it incredibly seriously and looking at what the options available to us are, because it is absolutely unacceptable to be making comments of the type that were made yesterday, that are totally defamatory to the team, the brands and even to Formula 1.”

Nico Hulkenberg is the only other option for the team to partner Kevin Magnussen, who is on a long-term contract.

    Lew title hopes
Lewis Hamilton could be sensationally handed LAST year’s world title after rival Max Verstappen’s Red Bull team were engulfed in a cheat storm.
Red Bull, bidding to celebrate Verstappen’s second title win at the Singapore race tomorrow, have been accused of breaking F1’s cost-cap rules.
Mercedes chief Toto Wolff claimed it would be a “massively heavyweight” issue if Red Bull broke last year’s budget, which was set at £114million.
If they are found guilty, potential penalties include points deductions or even “exclusion from the championship”.
That could see Verstappen stripped of the title he won last year in Abu Dhabi and Hamilton installed as winner for a record eighth time.

‘No secret that Red Bull broke rules’
Ferrari racing director Laurent Mekies claims it’s an “open secret” two F1 teams broke spending limit last year.
Red Bull and Aston Martin face possible punishment if, as expected, the FIA confirm they bust the cap.
Mekies said: “It’s now no secret that two teams broke the 2021 budget cap regulations, one by a significant amount, the other less so.”
Wolff points to ‘cascade of events’ in budget cap probe
Mercedes chief Toto Wolff believes possible breaches of budget cap by Red Bull and Aston Martin would be serious matter.
He said: “We have made more than 40 people redundant so that are dearly missed in our organisations.
“It was a huge, mammoth project to make the cap. I don’t know how many tens of millions we had to restructure processes in order to be below the cap.
“If someone has been not doing that or pushing the boundaries, every million [over the cap spent] is a massive disadvantage.
“I find it funny that Christian [Horner] says [Red Bull are below the cap] because it’s been weeks and months they are being investigated, so maybe he doesn’t speak to his CFO.
“As far as we understand there’s a team in minor breach, which is more procedural, and another team that is fundamentally massively over.
“If it’s true that they [Red Bull] formulated a lightweight chassis this year, they may use it the next year. So it’s a really a cascade of events that can be influential in all of the three championships.”
Red Bull could face Max penalty
Max Verstappen’s Red Bull team are at the centre of a cheat storm that threatens to overshadow his championship win, writes BEN HUNT.
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff lobbed a grenade in Red Bull’s direction amid accusations of them breaking F1’s cost-cap rules ahead of the Singapore GP.
Wolff made bombastic claims saying it was a “massively heavyweight” issue if Red Bull broke the rules relating to last year’s budget, which was set at $145m (£114m).
The sport’s financial regulations with a wide range of penalties for breaking them with sanctions include a fine,  a “deduction of constructors’ championship points”, and a “deduction of drivers’ championship points”.
More importantly, is the possibility that the penalties also include an “exclusion from the championship”, which could see Verstappen STRIPPED of the controversial title he won last year in Abu Dhabi and Lewis Hamilton installed as the winner for a record eighth time.
Wolff says budget breaches is ‘heavyweight’ issue
Mercedes chief Toto Wolff says breaching the annual F1 budget cap would affect THREE SEASONS’ worth of developments.
The FIA is tipped to reveal Red Bull and Aston Martin breached the 2021 limit.
And although it’s thought both breaches could be labelled “minor” – under 5% of the cut – Wolff says it would be still be a “heavyweight issue.
Ahead of Sunday’s Singapore GP, he told Sky Sports F1 that Mercedes made 40 “dearly missed” staff members redundant to make the cap.
Wolff added: “We’re using used parts, we are not running what you would want to run, we are not developing what we could be developing.
“It was a huge, mammoth project to make the car.
“I don’t know how many tens of millions we had to restructure, reprocess in order to be below the cap, and if someone has been not doing that or pushing the boundaries, every million is a big disadvantage.”
Birthday and title cake-walk for Max?
Max Verstappen was presented with two budget-friendly cakes in the Red Bull garage to mark his 25th birthday in what could be a weekend of celebrations, writes BEN HUNT.
For the first time this season, the Dutchman has the chance to wrap up the title – providing results go his way.
    Credit: Getty
But what should have been a comfortable weekend has seen him and his Red Bull team dragged into controversy over a row over money.
It relates to F1’s convoluted rules and their budget cap to limit the big team’s spending, with some suggesting his team have blown the budget.
Red Bull maintain they operated within the rules but ultimately that will be up for the governing body to decide when they announce their findings on Wednesday.
Verstappen has simply been unstoppable this season. He’s had 11 wins in the 16 races and taken 13 podiums – and had two DNFs.
As he turned 25, he has a total of 31 victories in F1. Sebastian Vettel, who is next on the list of wins by age, had 22 GP victories when he turned 25.
Verstappen is breaking records and should he seal the title in Singapore, it would be the second-quickest a driver has been able to do so, with five races still to go.

    Practice session recap
Carlos Sainz led Charles Leclerc to a Ferrari one-two in an unusual second practice session for the Singapore GP
Leclerc and Max Verstappen’s Red Bull – who did only three good laps – were delayed by technical issues.
Verstappen eventually finished up fourth, sandwiched by the Mercedes of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton.
Red Bull failed to explain the problems over Verstappen’s car.
The world champ had to wait half an hour to get going and later spent another long time in the pits.
