And the striker’s ninth minute header ended the Cherries’ six-match unbeaten run inflicting the first defeat on interim boss Gary O’Neil.
Rumours had it that Austrian Hasenhuttl was heading for the exit door at St. Mary’s had Southampton lost this south coast derby.
But Hasenhuttl, the fourth longest serving manager in the Premier League, won the battle of wits and tactics with rookie boss O’Neil.
O’Neil had enjoyed a remarkable honeymoon taking charge of the Cherries when Scott Parker was dismissed following that 9-0 defeat at Liverpool.

Well, Mr Hasenhuttl is a survivor having suffered two nine-goal bashings against Leicester and Manchester United and kept his job at Southampton.
The Cherries would have equalled their Premier League record unbeaten run of seven games had they got a result against their close rivals.
Dominic Solanke had a sight of goal after just two minutes but dragged Lewis Cook’s pass wide.
Booth teams caught the mood of the occasion and the game was played at a frantic pace.

No-one inside the Vitality Stadium was expecting an avalanche of goals between two of the lowest scorers in the division.
Saints arrived in town having scored nine goals in the league from ten games while the hosts could only boast one more.
But we didn’t have to wait long for one to arrive when the Saints turned the form book upside when Adams notched his fifth goal of the campaign.
Adams started and finished the move off with a neat header from Troman Perraud’s cross after he had lost Marcos Senesi in the box.
The goal took the sting out of the home side’s game and it took them 21 minutes before they tested visiting goalkeeper Gavin Bazuna.

The giant Philip Billing hit a crisp volley on the turn from 23 yards which was a nice height for Bazuna to turn away.
A simmering Hasenhuttl lost his rag after one incident but decided at the last second not to take off and throw his baseball cap towards the fourth official.
And tempers were little strained elsewhere when Chris Mepham caught Ainsley Maitland-Nile with a naughty tackle off the pitch and both players were cautioned by referee John Brooks for squaring up.
The Cherries threatened first after the break when Senesi was just off target with a header from Ryan Christie’s corner.
Saints looked far more solid in their team structure showing little signs of missing defender Armel Bella-Kotchap, who suffered a dislocated shoulder against West Ham on Sunday.
Bournemouth threw the kitchen sink at their neighbours but no-one in the camp could turn on the goalden tap.

Oh how the Cherries could have done with one of their record-breaking goal heroes Jermaine Defoe who was back at his old hunting ground on TV duty.
But the long-suffering Saints fans loved the evening watching their heroes claim their fourth win in 24 games and collect their first away clean sheet in 20 matches.

    That’s all folks…
That’s all for today’s coverage of Brentford vs Chelsea here on SunSport this afternoon.
It was a great evening of football, that saw Chelsea continue to remain unbeaten under new boss Graham Potter.
It is Manchester United who will be welcomed to Stamford Bridge on Saturday, so join us again for coverage of that one.
Thank you for reading as always, and enjoy the rest of your night!
    He’s a Kepa…
Not many Chelsea fans would have expected to be running out of superlatives to describe Kepa Arrizabalaga at the start of the season, but that is exactly what is happening.
After his sensational man of the match performance against Aston Villa on Sunday, he backed it up with another today at the Gtech Community Stadium.
The Spaniard denied Ivan Toney twice from close range, and made a host of other saves to deny the likes of Bryan Mbuemo on multiple occasions.
He will be full of confidence going into their next game, which is against Manchester United on Saturday evening.

    Anything but a bore draw…
It might have ended goalless at the Gtech Community Stadium, but that game was far from boring.
There were big chances for both sides, in what was a very competitive game, with a brilliant atmosphere under the lights.
Ivan Toney probably came the closest to scoring, but he was denied twice from close range by Kepa Arrizabalaga, who was immaculate again in between the sticks for Chelsea.
Pulisic injected some real intensity for The Blues, and looked very impressive compared to the misfiring Kai Havertz, who was far from his sizzling best.
A great game for the neutrals, and both sets of fans should be content that they didn’t lose that game.

    Around the grounds…
This is how the other games ended up tonight…

    Bournemouth 0-1 Southampton

    Liverpool 1-0 West Ham
    Newcastle United 1-0 Everton
    Manchester United 1-0 Tottenham (58′)

The referee calls the game to a close, and what a game it was.
    90+4. Brentford 0-0 Chelsea.
There are huge appeals from the Chelsea players for a handball by Ethan Pinnock, but the VAR says no.
    90+4. Brentford 0-0 Chelsea.
Sterling puts a cross up in the air for Pulisic to try and win, but he is never going to beat David Raya in the air.
Chelsea look the more likely side to find a winner here, as Chukwuemeka is through and has a shot low and on target!
Raya makes another good save, ever so close for The Blues.
    90+2. Brentford 0-0 Chelsea.
Saman Ghoddos comes on for Vitaly Janelt.
The Iranian once scored the winner in a cup final for Graham Potter’s Ostersunds FK side…
    90. Brentford 0-0 Chelsea.
There will be four minutes of added time here.
The neutrals watching will be wishing for more, the fans of either side might not be…
    90. Brentford 0-0 Chelsea.
Pulisic lashes a shot at David Raya, who makes an unorthodox parried save that fortunately avoids Aubameyang.
The American then does really well again to drive into the box, but his ball across the box is collected by Raya well.
    88. Brentford 0-0 Chelsea.
Brentford are on the break with Wissa, who looks for a through ball, but it is too slow and Chelsea win it back.
They then drive forward, and Aubameyang shoots from distance, but it is saved by David Raya.
    86. Brentford 0-0 Chelsea.
Chelsea have another good chance with Raheem Sterling, who is beautifully played in by Aubameyang.
He thinks he is through, and tries the left footed shot, but Pinnock slides in with an immense challenge.
    84. Brentford 0-0 Chelsea.
This might be 0-0, but what a game we have experienced so far.
Chelsea counter after Kepa saves them at one end, and Pulisic has a go on the volley which is fortunately blocked for the Brentford supporters.
It is impossible to call who could get the winner here.
    82. Brentford 0-0 Chelsea.
Kovacic has a go from distance, but it is high and wide from the majestic Croatian.
Brentford counter attack and Kepa denies Ivan Toney once again!
    80. Brentford 0-0 Chelsea.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is on for Chelsea’s final change of the night, he replaces Kai Havertz, who has been poor tonight.
    78. Brentford 0-0 Chelsea.
Pulisic has been brilliant since his introduction, he gets beyond Ben Mee, but Ethan Pinnock gets a crucial touch to divert his cross away from Carney Chukwuemeka.

    76. Brentford 0-0 Chelsea.
Rico Henry gets through and fires a shot into the side netting, he complains and wants a corner for a touch off of Azpilicueta that never happened…
    Goal kick.
    74. Brentford 0-0 Chelsea.
Loftus Cheek drives down the right hand side for Chelsea and whups in a menacing ball towards Havertz, who can’t quite get to it.
Chukwuemeka then does brilliantly down the left hand side to glide in the box past a Brentford defender.
He can’t quite avoid Raya with the cross.
    72. Brentford 0-0 Chelsea.
Raheem Sterling is tripped in the defensive third for Chelsea.
There will be a change for Brentford, as Yoanne Wissa comes on for Bryan Mbuemo.
The DR Congo international has a habit of scoring off the bench for the Bees.
Jensen is off for Brentford too, as he is replaced by Josh Da Silva.
    70. Brentford 0-0 Chelsea.
Mbuemo looks to loft Kepa from almost the halfway line and it looks like it has a chance of going in.
Kepa, however, is confidence personified as he runs back and chests the ball down to his feet.
    Excellent from the Spaniard again.
    68. Brentford 0-0 Chelsea.
Havertz forces a save out of David Raya as he lashes a shot on target towards the Spaniard.
Simple save, but better from the silky German, as he is affectionately known.
    66. Brentford 0-0 Chelsea.
Havertz loses possession again for Chelsea, it has not been his greatest showing in a blue shirt.
Bryan Mbuemo drives towards Chalobah, but the latter does well to see the ball into the path of Kepa Arrizabalaga.
    64. Brentford 0-0 Chelsea.
Chukwuemeka drives forward for Chelsea and plays a nice one two with Kai Havertz.
The prodigy can’t quite get a cross into the box as it is blocked by Brentford, but great intensity shown by the young lad.
    62. Brentford 0-0 Chelsea.
A great ball is played through to Mbuemo, but Azpilicueta does brilliantly to see the ball out for a Brentford corner.
The Chelsea changes will be made too.
Armando Broja, Mason Mount and Marc Cucurella are off for Chelsea.
Raheem Sterling, Christian Pulisic and Carney Chukwuemeka enter the field of play.
    60. Brentford 0-0 Chelsea.
Christian Pulisic, Raheem Sterling and Carney Chukwuemeka are warming up for The Blues, and look to be coming on soon.
The latter of those will be coming on to get some minutes the day before his 19th birthday.
