World Cup 2022 LIVE: England squad reaction, Suarez and Cavani in for Uruguay, Senegal call up Sadio Mane despite injury

GARETH SOUTHGATE has named his 26-man England squad for the World Cup – and he has picked James Maddison.Meanwhile, Uruguay have also named their World Cup squads, with Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani in for the South Americans.
In a surprising turn of events, Bayern Munich forward Sadio Mane has made the Senegal squad despite being a major doubt after picking up an injury in the Bundesliga.
And Belgium have named their tournament picks, naming both Eden and Thorgan Hazard, as well as Manchester City star Kevin de Bruyne.
As for Germany, Marco Reus has been forced to miss his FOURTH tournament due to injury as the Dortmund midfielder’s curse starts again.
The big tournament kicks off in just 10 days.
How to get free bets on football – the 17 best bookies to claim rewards and bonuses
Stay tuned with all the latest ahead of the tournament…
    Potential England XI at WC
Former Three Lions boss Glenn Hoddle has revealed his preferred England XI at the World Cup.
The pundit believes Gareth Southgate should stick with a 3-4-3 system, with some interesting player selections.
Luke Shaw is at left centre-back, with Bukayo Saka at wing-back.
And Hoddle also believes James Maddison should start ahead of Raheem Sterling, Mason Mount and Jack Grealish in attack.

    Hudson-Odoi rejects World Cup offer
Callum Hudson-Odoi has rejected the chance to play for Ghana at the World Cup.
The Chelsea winger is on loan at Bayer Leverkusen and shining in the Bundesliga.
The Blues academy graduate is eligible to play for Ghana, who booked their place at the tournament in March after drawing 1-1 with Nigeria.
Hudson-Odoi was reportedly considering switching his international allegiance from England to Ghana in order to play at the World Cup.
Hudson-Odoi has three senior Three Lions caps but can still switch as they all took place before he turned 21.
    Spain announce World Cup squad
Spain have left out legendary defender Sergio Ramos and goalkeeper David De Gea out of their World Cup squad.
The 36-year-old Paris Saint-Germain star Ramos has won 180 caps and is his country’s most-capped player in history.
But national boss Luis Enrique decided there was no place for the veteran or Manchester United stopper De Gea on the flight to Qatar next week.
Liverpool midfielder Thiago also misses out having last appeared for his country at the Euros in 2021.
But Chelsea’s Cesar Azpilicueta and Manchester City duo Aymeric Laporte and Rodri both made the cut.
And Brentford and Brighton goalies David Raya and Robert Sanchez also got picked.
    Van Gaal gets squad shock
Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal has revealed he caught some of his players “naked” on FaceTime when telling them they had not made his World Cup squad.
Speaking in his announcement press conference, he said: “It’s not easy dropping someone.
“I spent 1 hour and 45 minutes Facetiming the 11 players this morning. It wasn’t easy.
“I also took into account the time difference with the English players. I saw some naked players because they were still in bed.”
    Newcastle pair tipped to succeed
Glenn Hoddle has backed England’s Newcastle duo to perform well at the World Cup.
Callum Wilson was a surprise choice for some but the former England gaffer is confident he will excel.
Hoddle told Betfair: “I’m pleased that Callum Wilson has gone, that was a big choice for me, having him second to Kane ahead of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Ivan Toney and Tammy Abraham.
“Wilson player can score goals and he can come in and play with Kane if you need two up front. Wilson could also lead the line as he does for Newcastle. That’s a really good attribute for the squad.
“Kieran Trippier has had a good season. Newcastle has been an excellent move for him. They have been the team that’s surprised a lot of people this season and they’re brimming with confidence.”
    North-East hotbed for talent
Being born in Northumberland gives you the strongest chance of playing for the England team in a major tournament, according to new research looking at the birthplace of every England player.
The study, conducted by BonusCodeBets, analysed the birthplace of every player to represent the Three Lions at a World Cup or European Championships since they last lifted a major men’s trophy in 1966, finding the county to have the highest number of players relevant to its population.
England legend Peter Beardsley, as well as World Cup winning brothers Bobby and Jack Charlton are amongst those to have been born in the area.
Greater London has had the most call-ups over the last 56 years with 44, compared to Northumberland’s seven.
But since London’s population is vastly bigger than Northumberland it has had 202,455 per call-up, compared to Northumberland’s 45,571.
    Coady focused on Everton success
Conor Coady has dismissed claims international players will be distracted during the final weekend of Premier League action before the World Cup.
The centre-back has told talkSPORT that giving his all for Everton is ‘the most important thing’ despite the looming trip to Qatar.
He said: “This is the difficult part – obviously we’ve had such a high today getting told you’re in the squad, but we’ve now got to focus on Saturday.
“Obviously we want to win the game, and hopefully we’ll be top before the break, but the next thing will be meeting up on Monday morning and then we fly to Qatar on Tuesday.
“So with this sort of break there’s not much time to prepare for the first game, so I think it’s sort of all-go as soon as we meet up on the Monday morning.”
    James Maddison has Hoddle backing
Former England manager Glenn Hoddle is delighted that Leicester star James Maddison is going to the World Cup.
He told Betfair: “I’m very, very pleased to see that James Maddison will be going to the World Cup. There were a few whispers coming out in the last couple of days that he wasn’t going to go, but that wasn’t true and I’m very pleased to see that he’s in.
“He’s a top player in top form. It’s strange because we’re right in the middle of a season and I think it’s positive that players who are in really good form at the moment are going straight into the World Cup.
“There’s only a week before it starts, which is quite ridiculous in many ways, but it’s good if you’re playing well.
“Maddison has been one of the players of the season so far with his assists, goals and the way he plays and creates. We’ve got a lot of players of a similar ilk really, and that’s why I thought Gareth may possibly leave him out, but I’m glad to see him in the squad.”
All set for winter World Cup
The winter World Cup has been brought to life in Paddy Power’s Christmas advert.
The ad stars former England star Peter Crouch and remembers Zinedine Zidane’s infamous headbutt in 2006 in the form of Christmas lights.
It also shows a recreation of Nigel de Jong’s famous kung-fu kick foul on Xabi Alonso in the 2010 final, by way of charades.
    Rooney tips Bellingham to shine
Wayne Rooney has backed Jude Bellingham to shine at the World Cup after getting a Championship bruising from him.
Bellingham went toe-to-toe with England’s all-time top scorer back in 2020 as Rooney’s Derby beat Birmingham 3-1.
Rooney, 37, said: “I played against Bellingham when he was at Birmingham and I was playing for Derby.
“He marked me and was only about 16. What I really liked about him is when I passed the ball off he would leave a stud on me and I remember thinking he had something about him.”

    Netherlands leave out three stars
Newcastle defender Sven Botman is a surprise omission from the Netherlands squad for the World Cup.
Red Devils midfielder Donny van de Beek also misses out as his Old Trafford woes continue.
Bayern Munich midfielder Ryan Gravenberch is a third big name to have been omitted from the squad.
But three Dutch Premier stars have secured their plane tickets to Qatar.
Liverpool ace Virgil van Dijk is national team captain, while Manchester City defender Nathan Ake and United summer signing Tyrell Malacia are also included.
    Wilshere names preferred England team
Former Three Lions midfielder Jack Wilshere has named his England team for their opening World Cup game against Iran.
The ex-Arsenal ace showed favourtism towards the Gunners by Aaron Ramsdale ahead of regular No1 Jordan Pickford.
And he continues the Arsenal theme at centre-back, selecting Gunners man Ben White ahead of both John Stones AND Harry Maguire.
He rounds off the defence with Eric Dier, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luke Shaw.
Wilshere has gone with a 4-2-3-1 formation, picking Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham to sit in front of the defence, with Phil Foden chosen as the number 10.
He then went for a front three of Bukayo Saka, Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane.
    Carragher advises Southgate to quit
Jamie Carragher has told Gareth Southgate to quit as England manager after the World Cup – whatever happens in Qatar.
Speaking in his column for The Telegraph, the Liverpool legend said: “If I was Gareth Southgate, I would make the Qatar World Cup my swansong as England manager.
“Hopefully England will produce to a strong enough level to ensure that it is Southgate’s call.
“After his excellence in the job to this point, the least he deserves is to leave on his own terms when he feels the time is right.
“He is intelligent enough to have sensed a mood shift over the last few months, even if some of the negativity surrounding him during the build-up to the tournament is a joke.”
    Rooney names his England team
Wayne Rooney has revealed his England XI for the World Cup… and there a couple of shocks in there.
Rooney has decided to go with a 4-2-3-1 formation despite the possibility of Gareth Southgate opting for a back three to give England some extra solidity in defence.
There were no shocks when it came to the keeper, with the ex-Everton striker selecting Jordan Pickford in between the sticks.
He then picked Man Utd duo Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire in the back line, along with John Stones and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Rooney picked a midfield trio of Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips with Jude Bellginham operating in the number 10 role.
He has then gone with Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka ahead of Raheem Sterling as the two wide players, with Harry Kane leading the line.
    Gallagher compared to England great
England midfielder Conor Gallagher has been likened to the legendary Frank Lampard and hailed as a “game-changer” by Jermaine Jenas.
Speaking to BBC MOTD, Jenas said: “I had a feeling that he might sneak in there you know. I had a feeling, he’s a goal threat.
“He reminds me a lot of Lampard and also he [Gareth Southgate] likes to promote from within.
“In that midfield area I can imagine he was deliberating between James Ward-Prowse, someone who is a bit more reliable and a great set-piece taker but then Gallagher just offers you something else.
“I think he is a game-changer aswell Conor Gallagher. He’s the type of player that you bring on and he has an impact on the game.
“He presses, gets himself in the box and creates chances.”
    Mane going to World Cup
Sadio Mane has been included in Senegal’s squad for the World Cup.
The Bayern Munich star picked up an injury on Tuesday but Senegal are risking his inclusion in the hope he passes fit to play.
Chelsea stars Edouard Mendy and Kalidou Koulibaly do make the squad as the African champions prepare for games against Qatar, Ecuador and the Netherlands.
Everton midfielder Idrissa Gueye has also been selected along with Watford star Ismaila Sarr.
Nottingham Forest’s Cheikhou Kouyate and Leicester midfielder Nampalys Mendy are also involved.
    Gabriel Martinelli call-up slammed
Gabriel Martinelli’s inclusion in the Brazil World Cup squad has been branded a “joke” by former Brazil midfielder Neto, who felt Flamengo star Gabriel Barbosa should have been selected instead.
He said: “This is a shame, a joke. I feel ashamed.
What is Martinelli’s story? 33 career goals. This is a shame, a lack of respect for football. Doing this with football shows that you don’t deserve the position you are in.
“Calling up Martinelli and not calling up Gabigol [Barbosa] is a lack of respect.
“The biggest shame of all the call-ups. Calling up Martinelli shows that you, Tite, shouldn’t hold the position you do, because you’re not fair to Gabigol.”
    Schmeichel disappointed with Jadon Sancho
Man Utd legend Peter Schmeichel doesn’t think Jadon Sancho has “done enough” after missing out on the England squad for the World Cup.
He said: “I don’t think he’s done enough.
“I’m a little bit disappointed with the talent that he has, and yes it’s difficult to come to Old Trafford with that price-tag, I understand that.
“But he’s shown that he can do whatever he did at Borussia Dortmund, he just hasn’t done it enough.”
    Butcher pinpoints reason for success
Former England captain Terry Butcher feels Gareth Southgate’s squad can make the most of any low expectations as they bid to enjoy a successful World Cup campaign in Qatar.
He told the Press Association: “I look at 2018 in Russia, the expectation level before that tournament was very, very low.
“England went into that tournament not really expecting to win it, not really expecting to do brilliantly well, so because the expectation levels were low, it was an unexpected success, like in 1990 for us, and obviously 2021 as well with the Euros final.
“But the expectation level here now is low because of the results this year – and it is results which bring everybody along on that bus and which make everybody special.”
    Ramsdale buzzing for England mate
Aaron Ramsdale has discussed his World Cup dream while revealing his delight at Arsenal team-mate Ben White being called up.
He said: “The World Cup is a dream for any boy – none more so than me from Stoke on Trent
“I’ve worked my whole life to get here after watching so many tournaments and seeing players compete. It is such a privilege to be selected for this country. Now it’s time to graft even more.”
“I found out today at about ten to 12, we got a text from Emily, our player liaison. I actually found out that Ben was in the group first and we were all buzzing for him and it kind of filtered through that me and Bukayo were in as well.
“The first reaction was we were just buzzing for Ben White. He’s been really impressive, right-back is not his main position but it’s one which he’s excelling in at the moment.”
    Gazza warns England must gel
Paul Gascoigne hopes the England players will gel as a team at the World Cup – rather than just counting on one of them to make the difference in Qatar.
Gazza told PA: “We have got some quality players there (in the squad), but we are talking now individual players.
“You have got to look at a team player – I was fortunate, because in 1990 and then at Euro 96, we were a team. Today’s teams have got quite a few individual players, but it is whether you gel together, that is more important than anything else.
“In 1990, I was so proud of the players that didn’t play because when we scored, they were all up celebrating, there was nobody who sulked if they were not playing – some of them went there and never got a game, but they were still behind us, which is what the players are going to need more than anything.
“So I was fortunate to be amongst all them and they just let me get on and enjoy myself, and of course Bobby Robson was a brilliant manager.”
    Uruguay announce World Cup squad
Uruguay have confirmed their 26-man squad featuring three Premier League stars ahead of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Liverpool’s record-signing Darwin Nunez is one of the star names included in a stacked attacking line-up selected by manager Oscar Tabarez.
The former Benfica striker is also joined by two of Premier League stars including Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur and Manchester United youngster Facundo Pellistri.
Pellistri is the surprise name selected from the Premier League, given that he has failed to make a single competitive appearance for the Red Devils.
Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani have also been selected for their fourth World Cups.
    Grealish posts England throwback pic
Jack Grealish posted an epic throwback picture as he celebrated his World Cup call-up.
And the 27-year-old made no secret of his joy and excitement at being selected for the Middle East showpiece as he took to Twitter yesterday.
Grealish firstly tweeted a video made up of childhood photos and videos of himself that showed his progression from a young boy to his present day status as a Premier League winner and Three Lions international.
He captioned it with: “Dream come true. I’m just a kid from Solihull who’s going to a World Cup with England.
“I remember going into school early to watch England vs Brazil in 2002, my first ever World Cup I can remember… to think 20 years later I’d be playing at one blows my mind…”

    Rio Ferdinand raises Maguire questions
Rio Ferdinand has urged Gareth Southgate to drop Manchester United captain Harry Maguire ahead of the England’s World Cup campaign.
The former United defender believes that Southgate has better options to choose from going into the tournament.
Speaking to talkSPORT, Ferdinand said, “Walker would start for me at centre-half, but he’s not fit.
“Will he make it? I don’t know. John Stones would be the first name on the team sheet.
“And I’ll be honest I just can’t pick who else it’s going to be, it’s that difficult. Will you play Harry Maguire who hasn’t played any games? I think you need to playing week in, week out.”
    Fifa impose ban on Denmark
Fifa have rejected Denmark’s request to train at the World Cup in shirts with the words “human rights for all” on them.
The Danish Football Association (DBU) said in 2021 that their two training kit sponsors would make way for messages critical of Qatar.
And they also pledged to minimise the number of trips to the country to avoid commercial activities promoting the World Cup hosts’ events.
But DBU chief executive Jakob Jensen said: “We have today got a message from FIFA that the training shirts our players were to train in, where it would say ‘human rights for all’ at the stomach (of the shirt), have been rejected due to technical reasons, which is regrettable.”

    FT – Utd 4 Villa 2
Man Utd are the final team through to the Carabao Cup fourth round after a comeback win against Villa.
The visitors went ahead twice at Old Trafford during a whirlwind second half.
But Bruno Fernandes finally put United ahead late on.
And Scott McTominay’s last-gasp effort sealed the Red Devils’ revenge.

    FOLLOW THE ACTION HERE
    Nottingham Forest 2-0 Tottenham
Spurs torrid form continued as they were knocked out of the competition by lowly Forest.
Goals from Renan Lodi and Jesse Lingard won the game for the home side.
Spurs had Harry Kane up front, with Antonio Conte admitting after the game that he needed to play the England star because he had no-one else in his squad who could do the same job due to injuries.
    Arsenal 1-3 Brighton
The Gunners have been in fine form this season but were undone by Brighton last night at the Emirates.
Eddie Nketiah put Arsenal ahead early with a curled finish but Danny Welbeck came back to haunt his old side by equalising with a penalty.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side produced some excellent football in the second half, with both Karol Mitoma and Tariq Lamptey getting on the scoresheet.
The Seagulls are ball number three and will be hoping for an easier draw in the last-16.
    Martiel equalises for Man Utd
Thanks to a frantic start to the second half at Old Trafford, the game is now 1-1!
Ollie Watkins opened the scoring with a chip over Martin Dubravka.
But Anthony Martial tapped home just moments after the restart.

    Man City 2-0 Chelsea
Manchester City beat Chelsea last night at the Etihad thanks to goals from Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez.
The Blues carved City open on numerous occasions but were unable to finish their chances, with youngster Lewis Hall missing a couple of opportunities.
The 18-year-old was insrusmental throughout, but lacked killer instinct in the box.
Christian Pulisic also missed a couple of chances for Chelsea, who were eventually punished for their mishaps in front of goal.
Mahrez scored a free-kick to break the deadlock in the second half before Alvarez tapped in a second moments later.
Chelse had the ball in the net late, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
    Who won it last season?
Last season’s Carabao Cup final was played between Liverpool and Chelsea in what was an entertaining clash at Wembley.
The game finished 0-0, but it wasn’t devoid of chances or disallowed goals.
The Blues had three goals chalked off and were largely the better side throughout the clash.
Eventually, the game went to penalties and Liverpool won 11-10, with Kepa Arrizabalaga skying his penalty to gift the Reds a famous win.

    Man Utd vs Aston Villa
The two sides are currently playing out a very drab 0-0 at Old Trafford.
Neither side have had any major chances and both keepers are yet to be tested.

    Third round results
There were certainly some shocks in the third round this year, including Arsenal’s 3-1 home defeat to Brighton.
But Gillingham also stunend Premier League side Brentford, beating them on penalties.

    Bournemouth 4-1 Everton
    Bristol City 1-3 Lincoln City
    Burnley 3-1 Crawley
    Leicester 3-0 Newport

    Last chance saloon for United
This weekend is the last chance for a lot of players not involved in the FIFA World Cup to make a statement before the enforced mid-season break.
United travel to Craven Cottage for tricky tie with ninth-placed Fulham who are having a great start under the guidance of Marco Silva.
With a three point gap to fourth-placed Tottenham, victory is key to United’s aims of a top four spot this season.
Answering the call of your country
Marcus Rashford capped a brilliant day by being awarded the man of the match award today after being named in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad for Qatar.
Scoring the second goal to put United in front, he was a constant menace to Villa down the left wing in the second half.
Gareth Southgate will be hoping to see such positive play from the young Man Utd forward later this month in Qatar.
    Beam me up Scotty
Garnacho has really started to show his potential this season and does not look out of place at all at this level.
His vision to see the run of Scott McTominay but then to pick him out with a lovely clipped ball into the box was a touch of class.
The Scottish midfielder sliding in to poke the ball home to seal the win and book their place in the fourth round of the EFL Cup.

    Red Devils show their potential
After a first half that seemed like both teams had their foot on the brakes the second half did not fail to disappoint.
After falling behind to an Ollie Watkins goal, the hosts responded in less than a minute to draw the game level.
From that point onwards they looked capable of scoring every time they cam forward.
A well deserved win for Erik ten Hag and his team.
FT: Man Utd 4-2 Aston Villa
The referee brings the game to an end.
A fantastic second half giving us six goals to enjoy.
Control of the game swung back and fore until United scored their fourth to seal the victory.
    Man Utd 4-2 Aston Villa
90+2. Garnacho does brilliantly to spot the run of McTominay.
He clips a ball over the defence to the sliding Scotsman.
Diverting the ball into the back of the Villa net.
Goal – Scott McTominay (Man Utd)
Man Utd 3-2 Aston Villa – McTominay chance
    90. Brilliant first time pass around the corner from Eriksen to McTominay.
Bearing down on goal he looks to bend one in the top corner.
The ball comes thundering back off the crossbar.
We are going to have four minutes added.
    Man Utd 3-2 Aston Villa
    88. This second half has been a credit to the EFL Cup.
Maguire is penalised for a foul on Watkins.
The Villa players are demanding a second yellow card but the referee is not having it at all.
Replays show Maguire is a very lucky boy.

    Man Utd 3-2 Aston Villa
    86. United seem to be camped in the Villa half right now.
The referee gives the visitors some time to gather their breath as he awards them a free kick.
Garnacho is down as he was caught in a challenge.
    The replay shows minimal contact.
Looks like Martinez is waiting to come on for United.
    He replaces Victor Lindelof.
    Man Utd 3-2 Aston Villa
    84. Eriksen is looking to pull the strings in midfield, pinging passes around the pitch.
Game management seems to be key for United now.
Playing possession football, frustrating the visitors.
    Man Utd 3-2 Aston Villa
    82. Marcus Rashford comes off for Casemiro.
ten Hag looking to hold on to what the lead they have now.
Well into the final ten minutes of the game now.
    Man Utd 3-2 Aston Villa
    80. The second half has been a fiesta of football.
Goals galore and we may not be finished yet.
The pressure is on Aston Villa to get on the front foot now.

    Man Utd 3-2 Aston Villa
    78. A misplaced pass from Olsen finds Garnacho.
He threads it to Fernandes who shoots but Mings is sliding in to try and block the shot and sends the ball into the opposite corner.
Olsen may have got to Fernandes effort but the Portuguese midfielder does not care.
Goal – Bruno Fernandes (Man Utd)
Man Utd 2-2 Aston Villa – Fernandes chance
    76. The ball finds its way to Fernandes in the box.
He swivels and shoots and Olsen makes a great save in the bottom corner to turn the ball wide.
Maguire meets the corner with his head but the Villa keeper is equal to it once again.
    Man Utd 2-2 Aston Villa
    74. We have to have a winner tonight.
If neither side can break the current scoreline we will have penalties.
Both teams are looking to attack when the chance presents itself.
    Man Utd 2-2 Aston Villa
    72. Malacia and McGinn are having a good battle in the middle of the park as they exchange tackles.
Villa are looking to make some more changes.
The visitors come forward with Douglas Luiz, the ball is worked to Bailey who tries to bend one in the far corner.
    Easy save for Dubravka.

    Man Utd 2-2 Aston Villa
    70. United are looking dangerous every time they attack now.
The ball is slipped into the box and Fernandes is through at a tight angle.
With plenty of options in the box he tries to score from an acute angle and bells the ball out for a throw in.
    Terrible decision making.
    Man Utd 2-2 Aston Villa
    68. What a difference a half makes.
We are being treated some real entertainment to make up for the first 45 minutes we were all forced to endure.
Rashford does brilliantly to stay on his feet under the Villa challenge, steadies himself and pokes the ball passed Olsen.
Goal – Marcus Rashford (Man Utd)
    Man Utd 1-2 Aston Villa
    66. The irony is that at one goal down, Erik ten Hag brings on players from their game on the weekend who lost 3-1 to Villa.
Unai Emery has a chance to make it a perfect start to his Villa reign.
Another goal would give them the breathing space they crave.
Man Utd 1-2 Aston Villa – Rashford chance
    64. Villa are growing in confidence again.
Knocking the ball around, making United chase shadows.
Dubravka is able to come out and collect on this occasion.
Rashford is through on goal, the ball dropping on the half-volley and he smashes it just wide of the post.

    Man Utd 1-2 Aston Villa
    62. Fred comes off for Eriksen.
    Garnacho comes on for Martial.
Bailey is a thorn in Man Utd’s side as he comes back to haunt them again after his goal on the weekend.
Goal – Diogo Dalot OG (Man Utd)

England World Cup 2022 squad LIVE: James Maddison IN, Conor Gallagher IN, Callum Wilson IN, Ivan Toney OUT

GARETH SOUTHGATE has named his 26-man England squad for the World Cup – and he has picked James Maddison. All the talk ahead of the Qatar showpiece was whether Southgate would pick the in-form Leicester ace, and he has.
Though Brentford striker Ivan Toney and Roma’s Tammy Abraham have not been chosen for Qatar.
The big tournament kicks off in just 10 days.
How to get free bets on football – the 17 best bookies to claim rewards and bonuses
Stay tuned with all the latest ahead of the tournament…
    Southgate ready to push on
Gareth Southgate admits he’s ready to go a step further after reaching the World Cup semis in 2018.
The England gaffer explained: “In 2018 we were at the start of something where we hadn’t won a knockout game for 10 years and there was a little bit less experience in the group for big matches.
“I think this is similar in terms of its standing to the group that went to the Euros and we’re excited by the group. We think there’s a lot of exciting talent in it but the whole group has got to come together.
“It’s a unique situation for everybody this tournament, the timing of it.We’ve got to adapt better than everyone else in this coming period.”
    Who are the biggest casualties?
There’s plenty of heartache going around today, with Tammy Abraham, Fikayo Tomori and Ivan Toney shock exclusions from the England squad.
Elsewhere, Jarrod Bowen and Marc Guehi will have been left feeling disappointed.
And recently-capped dup Kyle Walker-Peters and Tyrick Mitchell may have thought they had a chance following injuries to Reece James and Ben Chilwell.
    Fans divided over Southgate calls
England fans are split after Gareth Southgate announced his 26-man squad for the World Cup in Qatar.
Some feel the Three Lions boss has got it bang on, picking the players that can secure glory this winter.
But others have been left angrily scratching their heads.

    Southgate’s Qatar Lions finally revealed
It’s been a long wait, with plenty of question marks over certain players.
But England boss Gareth Southgate has finally confirmed his 26-man squad for Qatar 2022.
Let’s take a closer look at the players and the clubs they represent…

    Southgate on FIFA politics comments
“I think that’s highly unlikely (to stay silent on political issues).
“I think we have always spoken about issues that should we talked about especially ones we feel we can effect.
“We have spoken in the same way other countries have about the human rights challenges and been very clear on our standpoint.
“Of course, we would like to focus primarily on football. This is a carnival of football and you don’t want to diminish that but we recognise we are going to be in that situation.”
Southgate on LGBTQ+ being victimised and Iran supplying Russian weaponry
“We stand for inclusivity, we’re very very strong on that.
“We think it’s important in terms of all our supporters and we understand the challenges this tournament brings.
“If it wasn’t for the strength of that community we wouldn’t be Women’s European Champions, so it’s very important to us.
“With Iran that’s a political situation that I don’t know enough about to comment on, so those decisions have to be taken by governing bodies.
“I can’t comment on it with enough authority to give you an answer.”
    Comparison to other previous squads
“I think they’ve all been good squads.
“I 2018 we were at the start of something where we hadn’t won a knockout game for 10 years and there was less experience in the group.
“I think this group is similar in standing to the one that went to the Euros.
“We’re excited by the group we think there’s a lot of talent in it.”
Southgate on Maddison reaction to being picked
    “Yeah he was delighted.
“And as I said I had some difficult calls that were emotionally at the other end of the spectrum so it was nice to give myself an enjoyable end to that.
“Because you know I’m excited about going to a World Cup it’s my fourth and that’s a privilege and an honour.
“All of the calls were a reminder of what it means to the players.”
    More Southgate on Maddison
“He’s always been up against some really good players in that area of the pitch and we’ve not always played with a number 10 profile.
“We like that he finds pockets of space well and turns and plays forwards – not enough players play forward in this day and age – and of course his set play delivery is outstanding and can score from long distance.”
    Southgate on player experience
“Yeah, he (Maguire) is one of our best centre-backs.
“We have players in the squad who have been to tournaments and have performed at the level, they knows what’s required.
“We have other players who are playing well and we need to balance all that in the team.”
    Southgate on Maguire
“Physically we’ve had really good communication with all the clubs on training loads.
“We’re picking up various fitness levels and we need to get that right.
“We’ve picked our more experience defenders and we think some of the younger ones have really good qualities but we don’t think they’ve done enough to push the more experienced ones out.”
    Gamble on Phillips and Walker
On the gamble of bringing Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips, Southgate said: “Not that’s not the case (they can’t play opening game).
“Kalvin played last night, so with him he’s free of injury. We are aware he won’t be able to play 90 minutes so we will build his fitness.
“We don’t really have a defensive midfielder outside of (Declan) Rice. We have Hendo (Jordan Henderson) who can play there but that’s not really his number one position so we don’t have a lot of cover in the country for that position.
“Kalvin is a super player and we feel that’s a risk worth taking and we think he can add to the group.
“Kyle’s a little different but he will be available again by the end of the group stage.
“We had to make a difficult call with Reece (James) but with him if everything went perfectly he wasn’t going to be available until the latter stages of the tournament and there were too many unknowns and we can’t take a player who isn’t available in the group.”
    Southgate on Abraham snub
“Tammy’s had a poor run of scoring form at the wrong time and it’s not a case where we are three or four weeks away from the start of the tournament – we’re 10 days off so form couldn’t be more important.
“We’re watching their club form but we don’t really know where they are until we see them face-to-face on the training pitch.”
    Southgate conversations
“I haven’t had a chance (to speak with) with Callum (Wilson), I have had with James because this morning there was a lot of speculation about him not being with us but we had decided a couple of weeks ago that he would be with us.
“I didn’t get a chance to speak with Callum because my priority on these days are the difficult conversations and sad news and that’s really tough.
“There’s not really many harder decisions in football than that, maybe releasing a young player at the early stages of their career but the nature of those conversations good and bad remind you of what it means to go to a World Cup.”
    Southgate on Maddison inclusion
    “He’s playing really well.
“We’ve always said he’s a good player and we think he can offer something slightly different to the other attacking players that we’ve got.
“At various stages there’s been conversations and debates about James…
“I think he’s playing as well as any of the other attacking players in this country and he’s a little different to the others and we might need that.”
Southgate on tough decisions and whether the squad has everything
“Yeah, we’ve wanted to make sure we’ve got the balance of the squad right.
“In this day and age squad is more important than ever. With five subs you can change almost half the team changed during a game so you want different options of matches and for different stages of the tournament.
“Having 26 available meant we’ve been able to take a couple of risks that we might have not been able to with 23.
“We think the balance is there and we have the cover we need. We’re lighter in depth in some areas than others in our country.
“But we think we have everything covered.”
    Southgate press conference
England boss Southgate is set to talk through his squad.

    30-minute claxon
We now have just 30 minutes until the England team is officially announced.
It’s been one hell of a day already in terms of news bombshells but can we expect anymore to come…
    Sherwood picks next England boss
Tim Sherwood has picked who should be England’s next manager.
It has been rumoured that this World Cup could be the last one with Southgate in charge, and Sherwood has revealed who he believes should take up the mantle after him.
Speaking to Fair Betting Sites, he said: “Eddie Howe would be my first choice and Potter has claims too.
“As mentioned I’ve been impressed with Newcastle this season and what Eddie Howe is doing there, so he’d have to be a big contender.”
BREAKING: JAMES MADDISON IS IN WORLD CUP SQUAD
James Maddison has finally convinced Gareth Southgate of his quality and has earned a place in the England World Cup squad, according to reports.
The Leicester star has been knocking on the door of the England team for some time now and it appears he will now make an appearance at the World Cup, as reported by Matt Law.
Maddison made his debut under Southgate in 2019 but has failed to appear since despite his strong form for Leicester.
    Samba party
Brazil have been backed to win the World Cup by Tim Sherwood.
The former Tottenham manager told Fair Betting Sites: “If I’m betting with my own money I’m backing Brazil.
“When you see their squad it’s like the Harlem Globetrotters!!
“An incredible squad of players and if they can knit it all together they will take some stopping.”
