Holland failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup leaving the entire world stunned due to their unbelievable squad.
But their new range of talent such as Frankie de Jong and Cody Gakpo has led people to believe that they could be the dark horses of the tournament.
And Netherlands will be backed to get the job done against an Ecuadorian side who haven’t made it out the group stages since 2006.

    Kick-off: 4pm UK

    Holland 1 – 0 Ecuador
    7. Klassen nicked the ball off the Ecuador defence and fed Holland’s most in-form striker.
The forward took two touches to the ball out from under his fast feet.
And then he unleashed a howitzer into the stanchion.
    Holland 1 – 0 Ecuador
    6. GAKPO BANGER!
A left-foot piledriver flies in the top bin.
    Pick that out
    Holland 0 – 0 Ecuador
    4. Ecuador have an injury with Preciado down and needing treatment.
The defender gets to his feet but has to go off.
A bit of physio TLC appears to have cured him and we have 11 v 11 again.
    Holland 0 – 0 Ecuador
    2. The Dutch controlling the ball with Total Football.
Ecuador are not pressing too high or desperately.
Edgar Davids is wearing sunglasses on the bench. Well you would too if you were Eddie Davies
    Headache
Some Dutch fans are wearing traditional Arabic head dresses in the stadium.
There are reports that fans are not allowed to drink alcohol while wearing such outfits.
So lets hope they’re teetotal or have alternative clothes under their orange robes.
    EcuaRoar
The boys belt out their anthem with some gusto.
Valencia shuts his eyes tightly as studies have shown voluntary blindness can increase singing volume by up to 3 per cent.
    They are up for this.
    Ecuabore at the back
The yellow underdogs are on a run of seven consecutive clean sheets starting way back in March.
The Dutchm, though, have kept four clean sheets in their last four World Cup matches and have their eye on equalling the tournament record of five.
A goal fest is not on the cards.
    Beginning of the Enner
Ecuardor ace Enner Valencia kicked the Qatar tournament off with a classy brace against the hosts.
But how will the sharp shooter fare against the Dutch and their star defender Virgil van Dijk?
The Liverpool leader has struggled at times in the Prem this season. Can he be exposed again?
    Ecualiser?
The South Americans go 5-4-1 in a defensive bid to blockade against the Dutch attack.
Expect wave after to wave of orange skill and flair.
But we have seen a few superb upsets so far and would love another.
    Sub Standard
Some real aces in the dug-out hole for Netherlands today.
De Ligt, Depay and De Jong all start on the bench.
Will it be D-Dady for the Dutch or Ecuador?
    Group A state of play
So here is the Group A table.
And this means that if this next game is a draw then hosts Qatar will be the first team knocked out.
There will be no way of them reaching four points with one game left.

    Atmosphere building
The fans are arriving in their droves in Doha.
    Not long to kick-off now.
And remember, if it is a draw then hosts Qatar will be knocked OUT.

    Sambad news
Neymar is reportedly out of Brazil’s next two games at the World Cup.
The PSG forward injured his ankle against Serbia and now looks ruled out of the remaining group games.
What effect will that have on the World Cup favourites?
    Depay sidelined
The rapid forward only gets a spot on the bench.
But we can expect him to get at least the second 45 minutes.
    Depay de price
LvG has revealed that fellow Manchester United reject Memphis Depay could play a half of the game after his hamstring injury.
The boss said: “The injury he has makes it so difficult to decide when he can start.
“But he is an extraordinary player and so I have set aside my principles because I consider him to be incredibly important to my team.
“I explained this to the players, that I am doing all this for Memphis, and the players accepted this.”
    Dum For
Holland started the OneLove campaign but have decided against pressuring Fifa further over the armbands.
Defender Denzel Dumfries said: “Over the past few weeks, we’ve really talked about it a lot. But we came to Qatar to play football.
    “That’s what we’re focusing on”.
    No Stance
Holland boss Luis van der Gaal insists his side do need to copy Germany and their anti-Fifa gesture.
The ex-Man United manager said: “”We put a full stop after all the political issues last Thursday.
“We have this purpose and we’re not going to have that tarnished by the actions of Fifa, or whichever other organisation”.

Qatar again draw a fantastic save from Mendy as the ball comes off Mahmoud’s knee but was heading into the bottom corner.
Finally the home side are starting to have a go in this World Cup.
    Qatar 0-2 Senegal
    66. The Senegal drums continue to beat in the stands.
Afif comes forward looking to make something happen.
All too often it just seems to be Afif versus the Senegal midfield and defense.
    Qatar 0-2 Senegal
    64. Qatar have had their first shot on goal of the World Cup.
It only took 165 minutes but Ali draws a great save from Mendy.
    Great save.
Pathe Ciss comes on for Diatta for Senegal.
    Qatar 0-2 Senegal
    62. Victory today would leave an interesting final game against Ecuador for both fans and neutrals alike.
Depending on the results later it could be a winner takes all game.
Qatar look to come forward, again jogging, only Afif seems to want to change this game.
    Credit: Getty
    Qatar 0-2 Senegal
    60. It is ironic really.
In a country that is constantly questioned about alleged human rights violations that their football strike force is so blunt.
They need to show more urgency in their play, like it isn’t an exhibition match.
    Qatar 0-2 Senegal
    58. Hoping for Qatar to get two quick goals to make a game out of this may be too much to ask.
    Let’s keep it more simple.
We now want Qatar to have a shot on target before full time.
    Qatar 0-2 Senegal
    56. Ismail is caught as he drags the ball back, sending the defender to the shops,
Free kick for Qatar in a dangerous position.
Ball is clipped in, not dealt with by Senegal and as Qatar look to get a shot off it hits one of their own players.
Sums up their tournament right there.
    Qatar 0-2 Senegal
    54. Cannot imagine what the crowd will be like in Qatar’s final game.
    Just an away end maybe.
Although the official attendance will still no doubt be 222,000.
    Credit: Reuters
    Qatar 0-2 Senegal
    52. Qatar need to have a go at this now.
Not that they look like a team who are holding back in any way.
They have just looked out of their depth in their two games so far.

Harry Kane has had a scan on his ankle after a knock he picked up in the win over Iran.
The scan is said to have gone well, and Kane emerged for training with the rest of his team-mates on Wednesday.
Kyle Walker could return to the side after missing the first game because of his thigh problem.
But James Maddison is set to miss out again, with Callum Wilson also a slight doubt after missing training following the Iran game.
The US have no known injury issues at present.
    Americans ready for England challenge
USA captain, Tyler Adams, has spoken about what playing England brings to the table for his team.
England are still a big team at the end of the day, but the intimidation factor? I wouldn’t say there’s many things out there that intimidate me, other than spiders. So it’s fine for me, but obviously I’ve got to play against all those big players, so I’ve done it before.Tyler Adams USA
Jack the man in the know
Ex-Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere called what abilities Saka had to show on the world’s biggest stage in Qatar.
After his performance against Iran, Wilshere wrote for SunSport: “I told Sun readers yesterday how good Bukayo Saka was at always making the right decisions. And if you didn’t know that before, you do now.”
“His performance against Iran was exactly what I expected from him, creating and scoring goals in what was a superb team display.
“Bukayo has improved his finishing over the last couple of seasons — he now instinctively knows the right time to shoot.”

    Three Lions become pass-masters
England completed 716 passes in their 6-2 win over Iran, their most on record in a World Cup match since 1966.
John Stones was responsible for 116 of those completed passes (16%), also the most by an England player in a World Cup game since 1966.
Against USA, England will try the same tactic to stretch and tire their opponents, creating more openings for their attacking talent.
    Fans dare to dream big
After their landslide win over Iran, England fans have started to dream whether they can actually go all the way in Qatar this time.
They have suffered so much heartbreak on the major stage that it is hard to get so invested for fear of going through it all again.
But that is not what football is all about, it is a game of highs and lows and you just have to hope their are more of the good times than bad.

    Southgate feeling motivated
England boss Gareth Southgate knows the importance of tonight’s game – and is motivated by the fact England have never beaten USA in a major tournament beforee.
“If we win we qualify and the first objective is to qualify from the group,” he said.
“We have three matches to do so and if it takes all three we have to be ready for that.
“Have we ever beaten the States in a major tournament? No, so we have to try to make history. We’re good at talking highly of ourselves as a nation with no evidence so we need to perform well.
“We will play a highly-motivated team and have huge respect for the opponents.
“We know their players and the quality and athleticism they have so we have to be at our best – I don’t think we will be underestimating USA.”

    Welcome to England vs USA!
Good afternoon and welcome to SunSport’s live coverage of England vs USA at the World Cup!
The Three Lions are back in action tonight following their 6-2 mauling of Iran on Monday – and they can qualify for the last-16 TONIGHT.
Wales’ 2-0 defeat to Iran earlier has left England in the perfect position to advance to the knockout stages in Qatar, and they’ll all but finish top of their group with a win too.
Gareth Southgate is set to name an unchanged XI from the side which beat Iran.
Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham, Raheem Sterling and Harry Maguire are all set to retain their places in the side.
USA are in desperate need of a win, having drawn to Wales in their first group game, despite dominating for half of the game.
The last time the two sides played in the World Cup was in 2010, when the game infamously finished 1-1 after Rob Green’s goalkeeping howler out in South Africa.
England, however, have managed to perform in their last two major tournaments, and headed into this one brimming with confidence despite some torrid Nations League form.
And they’ll be looking to put their best foot forward again tonight.
So kick back with a cold one and cheer on the boys – we’ve got you covered for the rest of the evening.

    Portugal 0-0 Ghana
    8. A nervy moment for Danilo in defence, who tries to trick his way beyond Andre Ayew inside his own penalty area – but momentarily forgets to take the ball with him.
    Portugal 0-0 Ghana
    7. Portugal have bossed possession early on, but it’s all a little frantic so far.
Bruno Fernandes has a chance to pierce the Ghana defence, but his lofted through ball is so wayward that it curls out for a throw-in near to the corner flag.
    Portugal 0-0 Ghana
    5. The corner from the left is headed partially away, but only as far as Otavio, who goes for a spectacular response on the volley.
His first time shot from 25 yards is pulled well wide of the goal.
    Portugal 0-0 Ghana
    4. Guerreiro wins the first corner of the game for Portugal after coming out on top in an intriguing footrace with Seidu.
    Portugal 0-0 Ghana
    2. The crowd cheer as Ronaldo takes his first touch in open play, but it’s an uncharacteristically heavy one that leads to him chopping down Baba Rahman.
    An inauspicious start.
    Kick-off – Portugal v Ghana
    1. American referee Ismail Elfath blows his whistle, and then Cristiano Ronaldo – visibly emotional during the national anthem – gets the game going for Portugal.
There are bound to be more tears from the 37-year-old during the coming weeks, but will they be of joy or despair?
    Here come the two teams!
The light show inside Stadium 974 has finished. Now it’s time for Cristiano Ronaldo to try to light up Qatar 2022.
He looks in relaxed mood as he leads his Portuguese team out on to the pitch. One sign among the travelling fans read: “I resigned from my job to witness the G.O.A.T.’s last dance.” Can he deliver?
The Ghanaians certainly look happy to be here and they sing their way through a jaunty national anthem, but now it’s time for the serious business.
Kick-off at Stadium 974 is next.
    Bilbao’s Inaki in attack-y
Leading the Ghana line this evening is Inaki Williams of Athletic Bilbao.
If his name, style and look seems familiar, it may because his younger brother – Nico – made an impressive cameo as substitute for Spain in their 7-0 win over Costa Rica yesterday.
The 28-year-old Inaki is certainly a consistent performer in the domestic game; his 247 consecutive league appearances for Bilbao is the longest current such run in LaLiga.

    A case for the defence
There was only one goalless draw at the 2018 World Cup, but five days into Qatar 2022 and we’ve already had four.
Surely there won’t be another one here in Doha this evening? Well…
Portugal coach Fernando Santos has come under fire from fans for his dour approach with many back home believing he is not making the most of the attacking talent at his disposal.
Meanwhile, ITV have just revealed that Chris Hughton has been helping out with the Ghana squad, promising that the Black Stars will ‘defend properly’ during this tournament.
    Players put through their paces
Half-hour from kick-off at Stadium 974, and both sets of coaches are out on the pitch and keeping keen eyes on their players warming up.
It may only be the pre-match routine, but Cristiano Ronaldo is looking sharp and focused. How will Thomas Partey and co. go about dealing with the FORMER Manchester United star?

    Opportunity to hit the top
A short while ago, the full time whistle was blown at Education City on the fourth goalless draw of this World Cup so far.
The 0-0 result between Uruguay and South Korea in Group H’s opening game means this upcoming match is an early opportunity for either Portugal or Ghana to pull clear of the pack. Who will take advantage?
    Here comes your man
There’s been a first sight this evening of the player that everyone is talking about…
HUUUGE roar from the crowd as CR7 comes out, clapping his hands above his head to respond to the Portugal fans who still believe he is the greatest player on the planet. If that’s what it’s like for the warm-up, how absolutely mental will it be if he scores the winner?Martin LiptonThe Sun

    Tenth tournament for CR7
On the pitch or off the pitch, Cristiano Ronaldo can’t stop making headlines and setting records.
This evening, the Portugal captain will play at his tenth major international tournament for his country, becoming the first European to do so.
His first such competition was Euro 2004 in his home country, a tournament in which he scored his first goal for A Selecao.
    Credit: @Squawka Twitter
    Live from Stadium 974
Our man in the ground this evening is Martin Lipton, and he’s been busy getting used to the sight of an unattached Cristiano Ronaldo.
“All eyes will be on one man, of course, inside the remarkable feat of engineering that is Stadium 974 on the Doha waterfront.
“Seven of the Portuguese side, and four Ghanaians, are current or former Premier League stars.
“But all of them have a club designation on the official Fifa team-sheet.
“All except one. Beside the name of Ronaldo it reads: ‘N/A (Free Agent)’
    “That’s been changed quite recently.”
    Brighton’s Lamptey among Ghana subs
    12 Danlad, 16 Nurudeen, 2 Lamptey, 3 Odoi, 6 Owusu, 7 Fatawu, 8 Kyereh, 9 Jordan Ayew, 11 Bukari, 13 Afriyie, 14 Mensah, 15 Aidoo, 22 Sulemana, 24 Sowah, 25 Semenyo
    Partey named in Ghana XI
    Ghana (5-4-1): 1 Ati Zigi; 26 Seidu, 23 Djiku, 18 Amartey, 4 Salisu, 17 Rahman; 20 Kudus, 5 Partey, 21 Abdul Samed, 10 Andre Ayew; 19 Inaki Williams

    On the Portuguese bench tonight
    1 Rui Patricio, 12 Sa, 2 Dalot, 3 Pepe, 6 Palhinha, 9 Andre Silva, 14 Carvalho, 15 Leao, 16 Vitinha, 17 Joao Mário, 21 Horta, 23 Nunes, 24 Antonio Silva, 26 Ramos
    Ronaldo starts and captains Portugal
    Portugal (4-4-2): 22 Costa; 20 Cancelo, 13 Danilo, 4 Ruben Dias, 5 Guerreiro; 8 Bruno Fernandes, 18 Neves, 10 Bernardo Silva, 25 Otavio; 11 Joao Felix, 7 Ronaldo

    Selecao odds-on for success
The bookies aren’t giving Ghana – the lowest ranked team at Qatar 2022 – much of a chance in this Group H opener against Portugal with the Black Stars priced at almost 8/1.

    Portugal win 1/3
    Draw 4/1
    Ghana win 17/2

Meanwhile, if you like your bets with a little more longevity, why not consider Cristiano Ronaldo for the Golden Boot? The 37-year-old is a 16/1 shot to put his Manchester United fallout behind him to top score at the World Cup.
Match odds from Betfair correct at the time of post publication.
    On the last episode
Not only will Cristiano Ronaldo be looking to secure the golden boot but he’ll want to inflict more pain on Ghana similar to last time out.
John Boye’s Own goal but Portugal ahead when the sides met in a Group stage encounter back in 2014.
But Ghanaian legend Asamoah Gyan’s fine finish levelled up the scoring for the Black Stars.
However, Ronaldo hit a winner on the 80th minute to seal the deal for the European giants.
    World Cup Golden Boot standings
As it stands, five players are tied at the top for the golden boot – something which Cristiano Ronaldo will have his eye on.

    Bukayo Saka – England – 2
    Olivier Giroud – France – 2
    Mehdi Taremi – Iran – 2
    Enner Valencia – Ecuador – 2
    Ferran Torres – Spain – 2
    Jude Bellingham – England – 1
    Jack Grealish – England – 1
    Kylian Mbappe – France – 1
    Gareth Bale – Wales – 1

World Cup 2022 – Spain 7-0 Costa Rica LIVE RESULT: Gavi makes World Cup history as Spain run riot – latest

SPAIN absolutely dominated Costa Rica to win 7-0 in their World Cup opener. The Spanish flew out the blocks with early strikes from Dani Olmo and Marco Asensio.
Ferran Torres then scored a double before a stunning goal from Gavi saw Spain notch five.
Gavi’s goal saw him create history as the youngest World Cup scorer since Pele in 1958, aged 18 years and 110 days.
Subs Carlos Soler and Alvaro Morata then hit Spain’s sixth and seventh in the comprehensive victory.

Result: Spain 7 Costa Rica 0

    Goodnight from Al Thumama Stadium
That’s all from us here in Doha, but it’s not the end of Wednesday’s action.
Before we draw a line under day four of Qatar 2022, there’s the small matter of Belgium’s opening game against Canada in Group F.
Thanks for joining us, and goodbye.
    Teen dream for Barca’s Gavi
The second Barcelona teenager in Spain’s midfield also put in a first class performance as La Roja thrashed Costa Rica.
At 18 years, 110 days old, Gavi became the third youngest goalscorer in World Cup history, and the youngest since a certain Pele notched in the 1958 final.

    Next up in Group E
It’s been a record-breaking beginning to Qatar 2022 for one of Europe’s fancied outfits – Spain – but for another in Germany, it has been a horrendous opening day debacle.
The group is back in action on Sunday, and should Japan get the better of crushed Costa Rica and Spain succeed again, then Germany would be eliminated before the final round of games.

    Japan v Costa Rica (10am)
    Spain v Germany (7pm)

    Pedri the pass master
Nineteen-year-old Pedri was only on the pitch for 57 minutes but dictated the tempo from the off, showing himself to be instrumental to what was a dominant first half display.
Undoubtedly rested for challenges ahead, the Barcelona teenager continues to prove himself as Spain’s latest superstar.

    Spain soar to the top
Luis Enrique’s Spain team turned on the style with a seven-goal showing that has taken them straight to the top of Group E.
La Roja take over first spot from Japan, who got their campaign off to a scintillating start by coming from behind to beat Germany earlier today.

    Extra! Read all about it!
Costa Rica didn’t muster a single attempt this evening, but thankfully Dan King has put in more effort.
Our man in Doha has filed his match report of Spain’s seven-goal drubbing of Los Ticos at the Al Thumama Stadium – a result that has left Germany with much to ponder in Group E.
Costa Rica were not capable of doing a Japan and King Felipe VI was in the stands to give royal approval to the destruction of the former Spanish colony.Dan KingThe Sun

    Stats from Al Thumama Stadium
It’s hard to know what is most impressive about Spain’s crushing of Costa Rica.
The fact that they clocked up 17 attempts without conceding a single effort at their own goal? Or even their 82% possession?
Or perhaps it’s their 976 completed passes that WhoScored tell us is more than Iran, Costa Rica, Saudi Arabia, Japan and Poland have managed combined at this World Cup (906).

Full time – Spain 7-0 Costa Rica
When Spain won the World Cup in 2010, they only scored eight goals in the whole tournament – they’ve struck seven in their opening game of Qatar 2022.
La Roja were excellent, but take everything away from Costa Rica: they were awful and didn’t register a single shot on goal.
Spain 7-0 Costa Rica – Campbell yellow card
90+7. Joel Campbell picks up a booking late in injury time for a poor challenge Soler just outside of the area.
Here’s a player desperately trying to get himself suspended for the upcoming defeats to Japan and Germany.
    Spain 7-0 Costa Rica
90+3. As the old song almost goes: “7-0 – even Alvaro Morata scored!”
The substitute exchanges some slick passes with Dani Olmo outside the box, and then shifts himself quickly left to belt low into the bottom left corner.
It’s fine play, a lovely finish, but the amount of space that the Spain attackers are gifted is bordering on criminal.

    Seventh heaven for Spain!

    Spain 6-0 Costa Rica
90+1. We’re into eight minutes of stoppage time.
On the one hand, it seems harsh on Costa Rica. But then their performance has been so pathetic, that they deserve everything they get.
    Spain 6-0 Costa Rica
    90. Six of the best for Spain!
Keylor Navas built a Real Madrid career on being a safe pair of hands, but he’s been anything but today.
The Costa Rica goalkeeper fails to deal with a low cross driven in from Nico Williams on the right, and the rebound falls invitingly for Carlos Soler to lash in from 12 yards out.

    Soler power!

    Spain 5-0 Costa Rica
    88. A bizarre moment as Morata pulls out of the opportunity to challenge Navas for the ball after chasing a killer pass slipped into the area.
I’d say that was 70-30 in favour of the Spain striker before he gave it up.
    Spain 5-0 Costa Rica
    86. Inside the final five minutes (plus inexplicable injury time). Will Spain find a sixth? They could easily if they really wanted to.
    Spain 5-0 Costa Rica
    84. It’s safe to say that Costa Rica won’t be progressing from Group E, but what must the Germans be thinking now?
They face Spain on Sunday, and could be eliminated if they lose that one too.
    Spain 5-0 Costa Rica
    82. We were just treated to a replay of that Gavi goal. It really is an exquisite finish.
    Spain 5-0 Costa Rica
    80. Navas and then the offside flag deny Morata from getting himself on the scoresheet.
Even in a brilliant side, the striker has the air of someone constantly haunted by bad luck.
    Spain 5-0 Costa Rica
    78. The great thing about Gavi is he is capable of the sublime – as we just witnessed – but also likes to get stuck in like a Lincoln City centre-half.
After a melee caused by Aguilera’s hefty challenge on Laporte, the teenager is straight across to ensure he is front and centre of any squaring up.

    Spain 5-0 Costa Rica
    76. At 18 years and 110 days, Gavi is the youngest goalscorer at a World Cup since Pele in the 1958 final.
    Whatever happened to that guy?
    Spain 5-0 Costa Rica
    74. Outrageous from Gavi!
The 18-year-old makes it five with a gorgeous finish with the outside of his right boot, one that catches Keylor Navas out to clatter in off the post.
Alvaro Morata mights have scored seconds earlier, but found himself denied by the Costa Rica goalkeeper.
However, the substitute kept his cool to retrieve possession, look up, and clip over a cross for the teenager arriving just inside the box.
One sweet, smart volley later, and Spain have five!

    Teenage kicks!

Spain 4-0 Costa Rica – Costa Rica substitution
    72. Another minute passes, another substitution is made.
It’s Brandon Aguilera on for Celso Borges. At this stage, they may as well have sent on Christina.
Spain 4-0 Costa Rica – Spain substitution
    70. The second half has been broken up by a flurry of substitutions – and that probably suits both teams.
While Costa Rica avoid a complete walloping, Spain are taking the opportunity to rest legs and the latest change is an interesting one.
Young Nico Williams is on for his fourth cap, replacing Marco Asensio.
The winger’s brother – Inaki Williams – is also at the World Cup, repressing Ghana. Could they meet in the later stages?

World Cup 2022 – Spain vs Costa Rica LIVE: Stream FREE, TV channel as huge Group E clash UNDERWAY

SPAIN are facing a tricky side Costa Rica in their opening 2022 World Cup group game RIGHT NOW!La Roja were the best international team in the world between 2008 and 2012, but those stars have retired and the new generation are finding their feet.
They came close to reaching the final of Euro 2020 last year but were knocked out on penalties in the semi-final by Italy.
Spain will be one of the stronger teams heading into the Qatar showpiece at the end of 2022 and they’ll be hoping they can go a step further than they did in 2018.
Four years ago in Russia, Spain went out in the last-16, losing a penalty shootout to the tournament hosts.

    Kick-off: 4pm UK time
    TV channel: ITV 1
    Live stream: ITV X
Spain XI: Unai, Azpilicueta, Rodri, Laporte, Alba, Busquets, Gavi, Pedri, Ferran, Asensio, Olmo
Costa Rica XI: Navas, Oviedo, Calvo, Waston, Duarte, Fuller, Bennette, Tejeda, Borges, Campbell, Contreras

    Spain 0-0 Costa Rica
    5. Close! A glorious dink into the box from Pedri catches Oviedo out, and lands perfectly on to the right foot of Olmo.
The volley across goal from the Leipzig forward drops a yard wide of Navas’ far post.
    Spain 0-0 Costa Rica
    4. The referee is Mohammed Abdulla Hassan of the UAE, who was widely criticised for his performance in the World Cup play-off between New Zealand and Costa Rica, and generally considered out of his depth.
    So that will be fun.
    Spain 0-0 Costa Rica
    2. Torres wins an early corner for the Spaniards that Olmo sends in the direction of Laporte.
On this occasion, the Manchester City defender comes up short and Costa Rica clear their lines.
    Kick-off – Spain v Costa Rica
    1. The crowd count down from ten, and then it’s Spain that get this Group E clash underway.
After Germany’s defeat to Japan earlier today, this is a real opportunity for La Roja to increase the pressure on Hansi Flick’s side – but opponents Costa Rica are no mugs.
    Here come the two teams!
The players make their way out on to the pitch at the Al Thumama Stadium, and take their places for the national anthems.
Costa Rica are well represented by their travelling support, but Spain are the side loaded with heavy expectation.
Here’s a reminder of how the two countries line up:

    Five minute countdown!
We’re not far off here in Doha.
Spain vs Costa Rice is about to get underway.
    Costa Rica’s key man
Joel Campbell and Keylor Navas – as always.

    Predictions?
Spain will certainly be the favourites for this one, but Saudi Arabia and Japan have set the pace for underdogs all over the world.
Costa Rica certainly have the capability to cause an upset, with ex-Arsenal winger Joel Campbell among their ranks…
Here at SunSport however, we are going to back Ferran Torres and co to get the win by a 3-0 margin.
What do you think? You could be in with a chance at winning £5000 if you get the answer right.

    Spain’s ones to watch
Spain have a side which is mixed with youth and experience. Luis Enrique will be hoping to get his side back into winning contention on the biggest stage.

    Busquet case

    City connection
Interestingly, Spain have a makeshift centre-back pairing which consists of Manchester City pair Rodri and Aymeric Laporte.
The only problem is, Rodri isn’t a defender.
There’s clearly a bit of a centre-back crisis in the Spain squad but like have to work their way around it.

    World beaters
They’re a long way away from the Spanish side which won Euro 2008, World Cup 2010 and Euro 2012 at a canter.
They did, however, put in a good shift at Euro 2020 last summer, ultimately reaching the semi-finals before going out on penalties to eventual winners Italy.
Their current side is riddled with young talent such as Pedri, Gavi and Ferran but La Roja are essentially in transition right now.
And Costa Rica will be looking to exploit that.
The Central American side reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup in 2014, topping a group which contained Italy, England and Uruguay.
Another upset here would go down a treat, especially with fellow group side Japan beating Germany in the earlier game.
The boys are back in town
Spain are in the building and they’ll be hoping to capitalise on Germany’s shock defeat to Japan.

    Costa Rica XI
Navas; Castro, Spence, Duarte, Calvo, Oviedo; Campbell, Borges, Tejeda, Villegas; Enriquez
    Spain XI
Simon; Azpilicueta, Rodrigo, Laporte, Jordi Alba; Segio, Gavi, Pedri; Ferran, Asensio, Olmo
Welcome to Spain vs Costa Rica
Spain kick off their World Cup campaign against Costa Rica – who proved they can cause an upset by topping England’s group in 2014.
Luis Enrique’s side will be wary of the Costa Ricans, who qualified for the tournament via the play-offs.
Costa Rica failed to make it to the knockouts in 2018, but four years before that in Brazil they somehow topped a group that included England, Italy and Uruguay.
Saudi Arabia’s stunning 2-1 win over Argentina will make the Spaniards even more wary that no wins are guaranteed at the World Cup.
With heavyweights Germany also in their group, Spain will know nothing but three points will do as they get their campaign underway at Al Thumama Stadium.

Herr Flick talks German attacking options
The Germany manager has spoken about Thomas Muller’s return from hip injury and knee issue suffered by Leroy Sane:
He is definitely an option. He did a very good job today in training. We are happy with him. He gives us one more option. It’s bitter that we have to do without Leroy. He can decide a game with his quality alone. We hope he can play on Sunday.Hansi FlickGermany manager
    From Russia without much love
Germany are looking to consign memories of Russia 2018 to history, finishing bottom of their group and crashing out of the tournament.
The curse of the defending champions was well and truly alive for the Germans at the 2018 World Cup, as the side formerly led by Joachim Low saw the defence of their 2014 crown fall at the first hurdle.
This was then followed up with a last-16 elimination to England in the recent European Championships.
True FIFA legends card status applies
Thomas Muller returns to the national team after his exile, looking to build on a record of 10 goals and 6 assists in 16 World Cup matches for Germany.
The Bayern Munich attacker will be hoping to spearhead Die Mannschaft’s attack.
A player with the ability of being in the right place at the right time is priceless when it comes to tournament football such as the World Cup.
    Welcome to Germany vs Japan
Germany kick off their World Cup 2022 Group E campaign against Japan at the Khalifa International Stadium this afternoon.
The pre-World Cup talk regarding the Germany camp was unsurprisingly focused on Marco Reus, who suffered yet another cruel injury blow to rule him out of the World Cup.
Reus has now missed Euro 2016, Euro 2020, the triumphant 2014 World Cup tournament and this year’s showpiece in Qatar through injury.
However, Germany are expected to be working with a fully-fit squad for the opening matchday barring knee victim Leroy Sane, with striker Niclas Fullkrug back from illness and the duo of Thomas Muller and Antonio Rudiger also returning to training over the weekend.
As for Japan, Karou Mitoma and Wataru Endo have overcome illness and a head injury respectively to make themselves available, while Sporting Lisbon midfielder Hidemasa Morita is back from a calf problem and could be fit enough to start.
Arsenal defender Takehiro Tomiyasu was rested against Canada following his recent muscular problem but should be fine to take his place in the team here, most likely alongside 122-cap skipper Maya Yoshida in the heart of defence.
Attacking options are rife within the Samurai Blues ranks for the World Cup, and Takuma Asano’s greater international experience compared to his fellow forwards should work in his favour.

World Cup 2022 LIVE: Harry Kane to have SCAN on ankle, Argentina STUNNED by Saudis, France BEAT Australia – latest

ENGLAND captain Harry Kane will have a scan on his ankle after injuring it in the 6-2 win over Iran. The Three Lions play USA on Friday in their next World Cup clash but Gareth Southgate will now be fretting over his star man’s availability.
Meanwhile, Argentina suffered a nightmare start to their World Cup campaign by losing to a hard-fighting Saudi Arabia side.
Lionel Messi thought he had put his nation on their way to a opening win in Qatar.
But two second half quick fire goals – including a spectacular hit by Salem Al Dawsari saw the Saudis pull off one of the biggest upsets in football history.
And late in the day, France beat Australia 4-1 after suffering an early scare in their Group D clash.

Lions could meet Wags after USA clash
England players could meet their families after Friday’s United States match – but it depends on Covid rates in Qatar.
Manager Gareth Southgate is hoping that the 26-man squad could have a proper catch-up with their partners, children and parents after arriving in Doha eight days ago.

Some players, such as Jack Grealish, saw their girlfriends on the pitch after the final whistle of their amazing 6-2 win over Iran.
Southgate insists – providing Covid rates remain low – they will be allowed at the team hotel.

During the women’s Euros, England’s players were forced to remain in a bubble due to Covid.
Southgate said: “I think towards the end, the women’s team had to batten that down a bit more because they had a few positive cases so we’re going to have to monitor it throughout.

“There’s this balance of the spirit and happiness of the group and the medical line of zero risk, and sometimes if you’re going to take zero risks, it can kill it for everybody, so we’ve got to try and find that balance.
“We’re going to see how the next few days go and we’ve talked about maybe looking at something after the second game but we’ve got to monitor what the rates are out here as much as anything else.”

Southgate fears England are unfair victims
Gareth Southgate fears England are being targeted by World Cup referees after they featured in a pre-tournament video nasty.
The Three Lions boss wants urgent talks with Fifa, believing his side should have had a penalty in Monday’s 6-2 win over Iran.
Harry Maguire was rugby-tackled by Roozbeh Cheshmi but VAR did not recommend a review.
Yet Iran scored a late spot-kick through Mehdi Taremi when John Stones was adjudged by VAR to have pulled the shirt of Morteza Pouraliganji.
Southgate revealed his worries after officials were shown a video of Maguire’s goal in a World Cup qualifier against Albania 12 months ago.
It would now be ruled out because Kalvin Phillips blocked a defender.
“We were told that incident in the first half would be a definite penalty. For the second half (Iran penalty), maybe there’s a shirt pull — but I’m a bit worried we were the example shown and then to get a decision as happened in the first half.
“We’ve got to have that dialogue with Fifa. We want clarity otherwise we don’t know where we stand.”
    Stat’s not impressive for Ron
Cristiano Ronaldo’s outspoken interview with Piers Morgan was the final straw for his United exit.
But his match stats this season – his second back at Old Trafford – also told a sorry tale.
Of course, he also paid for manager Erik ten Hag’s apparent loss of faith in the 37-year-old.
But one goal and no assists in ten matches make for far from iconic figures.

Spanish football chief ‘made De Gea snub worse’
David de Gea’s snub from the Spanish World Cup squad was made worse by a shock phone call from the country’s football chiefs.
The keeper is one of the few Manchester United stars absent from the World Cup.
It was claimed De Gea knew months ago he would not be in Luis Enrique’s plans but still hoped to win a recall at some stage in the future.
But now it’s claimed a Spanish football Federation boss called him – to say he was “glad” the 32-year-old had retired from international football.
Spanish journalist Jose Alvarez said: “After De Gea was told he wouldn’t be called up to the Spain squad, he received a message from the president of the Federation, who said: ‘David, I am glad that you have finally made the decision you have been thinking about’.”
De Gea reportedly replied: ‘Sorry? There is no renunciation of anything, who has told you that I renounce anything?
“The coach has told me that he is not going to count on me. but I have never renounced the national team, nor do I intend to do so, that is if I am called up.”
    Forget Jude diligence at work!
Joker Jude Bellingham urged fans to bunk off to watch England’s march to World Cup glory.
The Manchester United target, 19, scored in a stunning midfield display during the 6-2 demolition of Iran on Monday.

Millions bunked off work and school to watch the game in Qatar, which kicked off at 1pm UK time.
Jude was shown a clip of fans in a beer-chucking frenzy at London’s Box Park as his header went in.
The Stourbridge-born Borussia Dortmund star asked: “It would have been one o’clock there? Half one?”
He joked: “Sack it! Don’t go to work when we’re playing!
“This is what you love seeing really. This is why we play, especially when so far away from home.”
    Lloris hails record-equalling Giroud
Keeper Hugo Lloris hailed two-goal Olivier Giroud, 36, for replacing World Cup absentee Karim Benzema so brilliantly
Giroud’s double took him to 51 international goals, level with fellow ex-Arsenal striker Thierry Henry on the French record of 51.
Spurs star Lloris said: “Unfortunately we lost Karim Benzema to injury and we were all very sad, but Olivier deserves a lot of credit because he is an example in football because he never gives up.
“In the last few months he was in, then out of the national team but in the end you can always count on him.
“It’s a big achievement to equal Thierry Henry’s record and hopefully now he will go ahead.
“For all the team it’s a good start and for a striker it’s always good to start with two goals. He’s going to be full of confidence.”
    Scholes posts blunt Ron message
Paul Scholes has been far less forgiving over Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit from Manchester United than fellow legends Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney.
Ferdinand reckoned it was best for both parties and, while Rooney believed it was inevitable, he described Portugal striker Ronaldo as a “fantastic servant”.
But in contrast to his fellow England legends, Scholes posted on Instagram: “Mission accomplished… a**ed!”
    Kane tipped to get all-clear
Harry Kane will have a scan on the right ankle he injured in England’s World Cup opener with Iran.
The Three Lions skipper went down in the 48th minute of the 6-2 win.
Fellow striker Callum Wilson eventually replaced him on 76 minutes.
Kane then gave England fans cause for concern when he limped out of the Khalifa Stadium with his ankle strapped.
And The Athletic have now confirmed he is set to have a scan to determine the severity of the problem – with England set to face USA on Friday.
Journalist David Ornstein tweeted: “Harry Kane to have scan on right ankle.
“England captain took heavy blow on 48 mins of Iran win, went off in 75th + later seen with light strapping & slight limp. Indications were he was ok – England will hope results clear.”
    A frame of two laughs
A Saudi Arabian fan celebrated his country’s winner over Argentina by ripping his OWN DOOR off.
Saudi Arabia put together one of the greatest World Cup shockers of all time when they beat Lionel Messi and co 2-1 in the group stage.
Messi opened the scoring after just 10 minutes from the penalty spot and it looked like the Copa America winners would cruise to an easy victory.

However, Herve Renard’s men fought back in the second half and equalised with Saleh Alshehri on 48 minutes.
And Salem Aldawsari netted a stunning winner just five minutes later to seal Saudi Arabia’s most famous World Cup victory.
A group of fans watched the game from home and were lucky to record the moment Aldawsari scored his screamer without knowing they would soon go viral on Twitter.
    Result: France 4 Australia 1
Olivier Giroud’s double led this flowing French feast after Craig Goodwin thumped an early opener for the Aussies.
Adrien Rabiot and main menace Kylian Mbappe netted the first and fourth of France’s goals as they matched England’s attacking quality from yesterday.

Kane has scan ahead of USA clash
Skipper Harry Kane has given England a fitness scare ahead of Friday’s second group game with the USA.
The Spurs striker will have a scan on a knock.
    MORE TO COME…
Saka still tipped to sign new Arsenal deal
Bukayo Saka’s two-goal star man show for England against shouldn’t stop him signing a new Arsenal contract.
That’s the verdict of transfer guru Fabrizio Romano amid speculation top clubs will target the winger.
has sought to reassure Arsenal fans that a superb campaign in Qatar won’t affect his club situation.

    Sou cannot be serious
Roy Keane and Graeme Souness had an angry verbal bust-up during ITV’s half-time coverage of Saudi Arabia’s shock 2-1 comeback win over Argentina.
The Copa America champions and 36-game unbeaten Argentina were awarded a penalty after Leandro Paredes was wrestled to the ground.
Liverpool great Souness says the Saudi player had no interest in where the ball was – only the whereabouts of the player he was tracking.
Souness said the call is not down to “opinion” but “fact”, which prompted Keane to respond saying: “Well I’m here to give my opinion – that’s not a penalty.”
Fans loved the interaction that got increasingly heated as they shouted over each other, one said: “Just watched Graeme Souness and Roy Keane almost kick [the] f*** out each other live on air. And it’s not even lunchtime.”

    Rooney hails ‘fantastic servant’ Cristiano
Wayne Rooney reckons the departure of fellow Old Trafford legend Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United was inevitable.
The Portug hero exits for a second time after the Red Devils ripped up his contract this afternoon.

Ronaldo blasted United in a bombshell interview with Piers Morgan last week, leading to tonight’s decision by the club.
But Ronnie also took aim at Rooney following previous comments made by the Englishman over his conduct, claiming Wazza was JEALOUS of his longevity and LOOKS.
Rooney has now had his say over Ronaldo’s United departure.
The ex-England captain reckons the announcement was inevitable following Ronnie’s talks with Piers.
But rather than blasting Ronaldo again, Rooney instead called him a “fantastic servant” to United before wishing him the best.
Speaking on live TV with Sports 18, Roo said: “Am I surprised? No.
“There was no other choice but that’s a shame because he’s been a fantastic servant to the club. I wish him the best wherever he goes.”

    Ron’s hint over next club
Cristiano Ronaldo appeared to drop a hint about his next club during his Piers Morgan interview, writes DYLAN TERRY.
The 37-year-old’s Manchester United contract was ripped up on Tuesday as the club confirmed his deal had been terminated by “mutual consent”.
He is now a free agent heading into the January transfer window, but it is unclear where he will end up.
However, Ronaldo appeared to rule out a return to Sporting Lisbon or transfer to Napoli during his sit-down with Morgan last week.
He initially claimed he had turned down £3MILLION PER WEEK to join a team in Saudi Arabia.
And, speaking about his future, he then said: “You go [to] the clubs. But Jorge Mendes for example, has more than 100 players and they go Chelsea, they go Arsenal, they always mention Cristiano Ronaldo, they offer Cristiano.
“Piers, let’s be honest, who is the most expensive player, salary player, that Premier League had in history? It’s me, even with 37 years old. Why they’re gonna…even… they even offer me to Sporting or Napoli?
“I will be honest with you, I didn’t have many, many clubs. But I have many, many offers of other clubs. I didn’t change because I didn’t plan to do it. ”
Rio: Parting good for Ron AND Red Devils
Rio Ferdinand has suggested that Manchester United and Cristiano Ronaldo will be happy to have parted ways.
The Portuguese star has had his contract terminated by mutual consent following his explosive interview with Piers Morgan.
Ferdinand, who played with Ronaldo during his time with the Red Devils, was covering the World Cup when he found out about the news.
He said on BBC: “I think both parties will be delighted now. He has obviously done that interview with the mindset that he wanted to get out of the club.
“He wasn’t happy and made it very clear.
“Erik ten Hag has got what he wanted as well in this situation.
“So both parties are happy, so move on and the next chapter for Cristiano Ronaldo.”

    Piers: Gunners must sign Ron
Piers Morgan has urged Arsenal to sign Cristiano Ronaldo after he was axed by Manchester United.
The Red Devils announced that the Portuguese star will leave the club with immediate effect after his damning interview with Morgan.

During the TalkTV interview, Ronaldo slammed the club for not progressing since he originally left the club for Real Madrid in 2009.
The 37-year-old also revealed that he did not respect manager Erik ten Hag.
Ronaldo’s play time had been cut dramatically this season as the dutch manager changed the club’s play style, despite him being the club’s top scorer last season.
He also suggested the club did not believe him regarding his daughter’s ill health over the summer.
