47, De Bruyne immediately combining with Lukaku.
The substitute peels wide and holds off Gvardiol well before taking his position in the box.
De Bruyne curls it into the area but Croatia deal with it.
Second half – Croatia 0-0 Belgium
We’re back underway and there is one big change to report.
Romelu Lukaku is on for Mertens. He has three goals in his last two games against Croatia.
    Half-time stats
There has been little to separate the sides so far, and even less to celebrate.
Gary Lineker and co are doing everything they can to kill time in the studio.
Let’s hope for better in the second half.

Martin Lipton reports from Al Rayyan
SunSport’s Martin Lipton has his say at the break.
Needs a goal. As they say.
Although, technically, Croatia don’t. At least if they just want to go through rather than win the group.
By the way, if Croatia score one and Morocco get another, they will be level on points – seven – goal difference and goals scored.
You know what that would mean – yellow card count to win the group.
At half-time, that’s….2-2. Dead level. It would mean lots being drawn back at the Main Media Centre two stops back on the Metro later tonight.Martin LiptonSunSport
    Neil Custis in Qatar
Here is Neil Custis’ half-time report from the stadium:
ALF-TIME AT The Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium and the way Belgium are playing you would not put much money on them progressing with the win they need.
By the break their hopes of making it into the last 16 had only been kept alive by a VAR reversal as Luka Modric prepared to put Croatia ahead from the penalty spot on 15 minutes.
Andrej Kramaric reached for a loose ball in the box and was felled by Yannick Carrasco.
No complaints as English referee Anthony Taylor pointed to the spot and everyone was lined up and ready for Modric to take the penalty.
Then Taylor was called to the off pitch to screen to review the situation and he agreed that Dejan Lovren was just offside when the first ball was played into the area and had interfered with play.
A let off for Belgium but they had barely threatened at the other end.
They looked happy to sit deep and play on the break.
To be fair that nearly worked shortly before the penalty award when Kevin de Bruyne charged half the length of the field and laid the ball off to Dries Mertens but his finish was woeful curling a shot way over the bar.
Before that when Mertens has found Carrasco at the far post Josip Juranovic got back well to block his shot.
Indeed for a game with so much on it, this was amazingly flat and subdued.
Croatia coach Zlatko Dalic said his side would not play for the draw they needed but with Belgium hardly pushing the pace they seemed happy with the situation as it stood.Neil CustisSunSport
    HALF-TIME – Croatia 0-0 Belgium
The ball drops to Juranovic on the edge of the area, and his sliced effort signals the end of a half that won’t live long in the memory.
    Croatia 0-0 Belgium
There will be four added minutes here.
Over in the other game, Morocco are 2-1 up and currently top of group F.
As it stands, Belgium are heading home.
    Croatia 0-0 Belgium
44, De Bruyne digs out a great first time cross into the six-yard box.
Livakovic was out quickly to claim it, but Mertens really had to gamble at the near post.
You sense Lukaku would have been licking his lips at that opportunity.
Sosa then blazes his effort into the stands. A lack of composure from the full-back.

    Croatia 0-0 Belgium
41, Belgium use the Mexican wave as encouragement and pile forward with some urgency.
Dendoncker makes a good run down the right and slides a dangerous ball across the face of goal.
No one in red could get on the end of it and Croatia escape.
    Martin Lipton in Al Rayyan
SunSport’s Martin Lipton on the atmosphere inside the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium.

35, Witsel drives forward and just kept going. They eventually work it wide to Castagne who crosses into Trossard.
It’s a mismatch against Lovren and the Croats clear it to safety.
    Croatia 0-0 Belgium
32, Perisic checks inside and finds Brozovic who’s shot is deflected.
It comes out to Sosa who wastes no time curling in a decent cross. Livaja meets it but it’s over the bar.

28, All of Croatia’s good work is down their wings.
Kramaric and Perisic are hugging the touchline, pulling out Belgium’s wing-backs so wide that Modric has acres of room in the middle.
Still goalless as we approach the half hour mark.
    Croatia 0-0 Belgium
25, Witsel has a crack from distance, but it’s not struck with any real venom and Livakovic can claim it eventually.
Croatia are able to move defence into attack in a heartbeat and they have a corner now.
The Croatia players argue with Anthony Taylor after his decision to rule out the penaltyCredit: AP
    Martin Lipton on the penalty
    Or offside, I should say.
Croatia can’t believe it. Belgium can’t believe their luck.
Anthony Taylor rightly points to the spot when Carrasco’s stupid stray boot brings Kramaric down.
But the men in the VAR booth intervene.
The micrometers and computer gadgets say Lovren was a matter of millimetres offside when he forced the panicky header, so it was not a “deliberate play”.
And the ball then fell to Kramaric, who was even further advanced and surely would have called as well as he retreated from a “Griezmann” type position to take advantage of the error.
Disbelief from the Balkan sans when they see the 3D illustration. But a correct call.Martin LiptonSunSport
    Croatia 0-0 Belgium
20, Modric flashes a teasing ball across the area, but Belgium just about manage to hack it clear.
It’s been a dramatic start, that’s for sure.
    Martin Lipton in Qatar
    Here’s the low-down from the stadium…
Defences on top. Not at all. In fact, both of them look horribly vulnerable already.
News of that Moroco goal against Canada has upped the ante even more.
If that scoreline does not alter adversely for the North Africans, one of these is going out.
Croatia only need a draw. Belgium must win.
Twitchy. On and off the pitch.Martin LiptonSunSport
NO PENALTY – Croatia 0-0 Belgium
18, Anthony Taylor rules out the penalty for an offside.
A ridiculously long wait for what should be a simple decision for VAR.
A lucky escape for Belgium and Carrasco. But letter of the law and all that.
    But wait…
16, There is a delay as VAR check for an offside in the build-up to the penalty…

    13, Massive chance!
De Bruyne drives his team forward on the counter and puts it on a plate for Mertens who gets it all wrong, curling his first time effort high and wide.
    Croatia 0-0 Belgium
11, Mertens makes a smart run and gets in behind.
He rolls it across goal but no one had gambled. It falls to Carrasco who hit it from a tight angle, but straight into a white shirt.

    Croatia 0-0 Belgium
10, Alderweireld plays a brilliant ball over the top to Mertens who can’t quite bring it under his spell.
    Nice idea from the defender.
    Croatia 0-0 Belgium
8, Trossard uses his body to win a foul in the middle of the park.
Carrasco then cuts inside and gets a shot away, which takes a nick off Juranovic who followed him all the way.
Belgium are just starting to get a foothold in the game.

Canada 1 Morocco 2 LIVE SCORE: Ziyech and En Nesyri put Morocco top of World Cup Group F before own goal halves deficit

MOROCCO are currently TOP of Group F after Hakim Ziyech opened the scoring from long-range.It was Milan Borjan, the Canada goalkeeper, who is at fault for the goal after taking a heavy touch into the path of the Moroccan.
Chelsea’s winger made no mistake, finishing from far out to put his side ahead and top of the group as it stands.
They soon doubled their lead through Youssef En Nesyri, who calmly slotted past Borjan to make it comfortable for his side.
Canada had a goal back as Nayef Augerd deflected a cross past his goalkeeper to halve the deficit.
Morroco thought they had restored the two-goal lead before half-time, but En Neysri saw his second chalked off as the flag was up for offside.

    Canada 1-2 Morocco
    46. That goal just before half time will have rejuvenated the Canadians.
They were completely out of this game at 2-0 down.
The Atlas Lions will be keen to restore that two goal lead as soon as they can in this second half.
    Kick-off: Canada 1-2 Morocco
Canada get the second half started.
No changes for either side at half time.
Big half ahead for Morocco now.
    HT: Canada 1-2 Morocco
The Atlas Lions need to get another goal to give themselves some breathing space in this game.
Otherwise, the run the risk of having a very nervy second half if Canada equalise and continue to press.
Meanwhile, in the other group game it remains 0-0 between Croatia and Belgium.
Fans will be feeling the nerves until that final whistle is blown.

In the ground – half time analysis
SunSport’s reporter Oscar Paul reports from Doha:
The raucous Morocco supporters must have felt qualification was done and dusted after early strikes from Hakim Ziyech and Youssef En-Nesyri.
Now, at 2-1 following Nayef Aguerd’s own goal – the 100th goal of this World Cup – there will be a few nerves jangling.
The Africans top the group at half-time with Belgium drawing 0-0 with Croatia at the break.
Yet an early Canada goal at the start of the second half would really set pulses racing.
Morocco are playing brilliantly but will want to reestablish that two-goal advantage before the party can really kick off.
En-Nesyri thought he had his second just before the break but it was ruled out because Aguerd was adjudged to be blocking the goalkeeper.
    HT: Canada 1-2 Morocco
Hakim Ziyech seems to lead this Moroccan side with their attacking threat.
He sticks to his job for the national team and hugs that touchline, looking to bring others into the game.

    HT: Canada 1-2 Morocco
Despite slightly shading the possession stats, there has only really been one team in this for the main.
Morocco will feel hard done by with the Canadian goal, which was just genuine bad luck.

    HT: Canada 1-2 Morocco
The referee brings the half to a close.
Morocco lead and are heading for the last 16 as things stand.
Canada will feel they have got themselves back into this game.

    Canada 1-2 Morocco
45+4. Just when you think the officials cannot surprise you, they just say ‘hold my pint’.
The linesman has his flag up, presumably for offside.
Replays show no offside but potentially a Moroccan player was in the keeper’s eyeline when the shot came in.
How would the linesman see that from the touchline, begs belief.
Either way the goal is chalked off.
    Goal disallowed
    Goal – Youssef En-Nesyri (Morocco)
    Canada 1-2 Morocco
45+2. Morocco look to come forward once again.
The crowd have been quietened by that own goal.
It’s a yellow card for Adekugbe for his foul on Hakimi.
    Canada 1-2 Morocco
    45. We are going to see five additional minutes added.
That must be for that tea party earlier.
Walid Regragui needs to get his troops in the changing rooms and get the them to regroup.
That goal seems to have knocked them.
    Credit: Reuters
    Canada 1-2 Morocco
    43. That is the first goal Morocco have conceded under Walid Regragui’s reign.
The Canadians are playing with a lot more confidence now.
Just goes to show how important a goal is in any context of the game for changing your fortunes.
Morocco have a game on their hands again.
    Canada 1-2 Morocco
    41. Out of nowhere, Canada are back in this game.
Adekugbe crosses the ball from the left and Aguerd throws a leg at it and deflects it passed his keeper and in.
Totally against the run of play of this half.
Goal – Nayef Aguerd own goal (Morocco)
    Canada 0-2 Morocco
    39. There is something missing from this Canadian team.
Just the ability to make something happen in midfield and attack.
Too often their play seems to have no penetration.
    Credit: AP
    Canada 0-1 Morocco
    37. Canada are struggling to string a series of passes together.
You have to give credit to the Moroccan tactics as they are creating this in their opponents.
Still the fans whistle as Canada have the ball.
    Canada 0-2 Morocco
    35. We have a slight break in play as the officials have a tea party on the side of the pitch.
Maybe one of them needs their batteries changing.
Walid Regragui takes the opportunity to get some messages across to his players.
    Canada 0-2 Morocco
    33. Morocco are getting numbers behind the ball all of the time.
There seems no way through for the attacking Canadians.
Morocco are bossing this game all over the pitch.
    Canada 0-2 Morocco
    31. Credit where it is due, Canada are not giving up on this game.
Their fans have been silenced by this Moroccan performance, left wondering what could have been.
If only Alphonso Davies put that penalty away.
    Credit: PA
    Canada 0-2 Morocco
    29. Canada are having some possession now.
With no way through the Moroccan lines, they pass back to their defenders.
Walid Regragui really has the Midas touch with this team.
I wonder if tomorrow will be a Bank Holiday in Morocco.
Canada 0-2 Morocco – Osorio yellow card
    27. The Atlas Lions are not a team anyone will want to face in the knockout phases of the competition.
Solid at the back, physical, can pass the ball and finish their chances.
Some could even say dark horses for this World Cup.
Meanwhile Osorio is shown the yellow card for Canada.
    Canada 0-2 Morocco
    25. Ball in behind the Canadian defence and Youssef En-Nesyri gets himself onto it, beating two defenders in a foot race.
From the edge of the box he buries the shot passed the Canadian keeper.
It is party time for all those Moroccan fans now.
    Credit: Getty
    Goal – Youssef En-Nesyri (Morocco)
    Canada 0-1 Morocco
    22. Morocco could become only the second African side to qualify for the last 16 of the Qatar World Cup.
Senegal of course play England on Sunday.
The travelling African fans are enjoying their day so far.

World Cup 2022 LIVE: France’s Tunisia defeat could be OVERTURNED, Argentina TOP Group C, England squad updates – latest

FRANCE’S shocking 1-0 defeat to Tunisia could be dramatically overturned.Antoine Griezmann thought he had rescued a point for the world champions deep into stoppage time before the goal was chalked off in a controversial offside call.
But France have demanded Fifa change the result as Tunisia had kicked off before the equaliser was ruled out which goes against the rulebook.
Meanwhile, Argentina recovered from their opening-day defeat to Saudi Arabia by topping Group C with a win over Poland.
And England are training with the entire remaining squad after the departure of Arsenal star Ben White ahead of Senegal clash.

England Head and shoulders above the rest says Hoddle
Former England manager reckons Gareth Southgate’s side have been comfortably better than any of their rivals at the World Cup.
He told Betfair: “Now it’s the knockouts it’s a step up in quality of opposition, but you can only do what you can in the group that you’re in, and look at some of the other teams, Belgium, Argentina, France, they’ve all had little obstacles and dropped points.
“We’re head and shoulders above those at the moment, we’ve made it easier for ourselves by playing so well.
“I love the fact that the boys genuinely feel like a team. Saka would have been very disappointed that he wasn’t playing against Wales, he didn’t do anything wrong in the game against the USA.
“Foden came in, did brilliant, scored, made the goal with the freekick, and he runs at people.
“There are some tough selections to make now for Gareth, but they are only tough in the positive way, not in the negative way. As a manager you always want those kind of decisions.”
    Half-time
    Canada 1 Morocco 2
    Croatia 0 Belgium 0
It’s half-time and it’s good news for Croatia and Morocco, who are heading through.
As for Belgium, they need to find a goal from somewhere or they’ll crash out in the group stages for the first time since the 1998 World Cup.
But it’s been more than three hours since their only goal of the tournament so far.

    Canada 1 Morocco 2
Canada are back in the game and in fortuous circumstances.
Adekugbe gets in down the left and fires a ball across that deflects in off West Ham defender Aguerd.
The Africans are still sitting at the top of the group, but they will give them something to think about.
    Belgium feeling the heat
    From Martin Lipton in Qatar
There is a strange mood inside the stadium.
    Subdued, uncertain, nervous.
Croatia still appear the more composed team, although the statistics suggest it’s far more even a contest than it feels.
And, of course, if you have De Bruyne, you will always have hope.
At some point, surely, Martinez will have to think about Lukaku, no matter how fit he really is.
    Canada 0 Morocco 2
Morocco appear to be cruising into the knockout stages as they doubled their lead inside 30 minutes.
En-Nesyri latches onto an excellent ball in behind the Canada backline and composes himself before clinically firing low past Borjan.

    Suarez showing no mercy
Luis Suarez has been speaking ahead of his reunion with Ghana and said that he’s not sorry about his handball incident 12 years ago.
The ex-Liverpool striker was famously sent off for handballing on the line in the last minute of their clash at the 2010 World Cup.
He said: “I don’t have to apologize for the handball in 2010.
“I touched it with my hand, they sent me off and Ghana took their penalty and missed it. I didn’t make any mistakes.”

    Croatia 0 Belgium 0
15 minutes in and we already have some VAR drama.
Carrasco brings down Kramaric and concedes a penalty and just as Modric is about to take the kick, Anthony Taylor is asked to go over to the monitor and check for an offside.
The decision is eventually overturned and Modric and his Croatian team-mates are furious.
Belgium get away with another one.

    Canada 0 Morocco 1
But we do have an early goal in the other game.
It’s a goalkeeping mistake from Milan Borjan, who gets takes a heavy touch and gets caught in no man’s land.
Hakim Ziyech picks up the loose ball and takes full advantage by coolly chipping the ball home from 35-yards.
As it stands, Morocco are winning the group and Belgium are heading home.
    Croatia 0 Belgium 0
Croatia almost lead inside 10 seconds.
Ivan Perisic picks up the ball on the left and cuts inside before firing a spectacular effort just past the post.
Belgium, who must avoid defeat to have any chance of progressing to the round of 16, just about survive the early scare.
    Maguire mocked by Ghanaian politician
A Ghanaian MP bizarrely used Harry Maguire to attack his political opponents during a debate on the economy.
Isaac Adongo said: “If you’re a fan of football … there was a player in England called [Harry] Maguire who was playing for Manchester United. He’s a defender.
“[At Leicester] he was tackling everybody and throwing his body everywhere. He was seen as the best defender in the world.
“Manchester United went and bought him. He became the biggest threat at the centre of Manchester United’s defence, tackling [his own] players and giving assists to opponents.
“Mr Speaker, when even opponents fail to score, Maguire will score for them. Mr Speaker, you remember in this country we also have an Economic Maguire.”

    Scaloni downplays Argentina ‘favourites’ tag
Lionel Scaloni says Argentina are “not favourites” to beat Australia in the last-16, saying: “They’re all difficult, we saw that with Saudi Arabia.
“If you think Australia will be easy you’re wrong because they have shown that getting through against tough teams in this World Cup.
“All the games are hard. Anyone who thinks the match against Australia will be easy is wrong. We’re not favourites.
“If you think that just because we won against Poland, we are going to become World Cup winners, you’re wrong.”

Asamoah Gyan claims Ghanaians still “hate” Luis Suarez after his controversial handball in the 2010 World Cup.
But Ghana get the chance for revenge when they face Uruguay for a spot in the knockout stages tomorrow.
Gyan said: “Back home, everybody who watched the game, they dislike Suarez.
“He is a hero in Uruguay although people in Ghana see him as a cheat. People do hate him.”
    Messi sets unwanted penalty record
Lionel Messi officially has the worst penalty record of any World Cup player to take at least two penalties since 1966.
The ace had his latest spot-kick saved by Poland goalie Wojciech Szczesny last night.
And Messi now holds an unwanted record ahead of the knockout stages.

    Time will tell for final
A so-called time traveller has supposedly revealed the two nations in the World Cup final in the latest bizarre post sweeping the internet.
The TikTok user shared TV footage of a full-time scene of a match which they ridiculously claim to have taken in the future.
Sharing footage which they claimed was taken two weeks in the future at the World Cup final, they claimed Argentina will beat Brazil.
The bonkers video says: “I am a time traveller and Argentina just beat Brazil in the World Cup finals.”
I’m a World Cup time traveller – here are the two nations who will be in the final and I have video to prove it
    SunSport’s Dan King in Qatar
“The controversial ending to France v Tunisia had repercussions well beyond the pitch.
“Fans of the rival nations watching the game in a popular sports bar began squaring up to each other as the drama unfolded and Antoine Griezmann’s late equaliser for France was ruled out for offside by VAR.
“Security swooped quickly to stop things getting out of control and managed to calm the situation down.
“Just at that moment, the Fifa TV advert featuring Lionel Messi,  Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar came on, to remind everyone that ‘Football Unites’.”
    World Cup’s ‘sexiest fan’ defiant
A model dubbed the “World Cup’s hottest fan” says she doesn’t care if she gets arrested as she continues to show off her sexy outfits in Qatar.
Ivana Knoll said: “I was never afraid to be arrested to be what I am, and I don’t think I can hurt someone wearing a bikini. And if that deserves to be arrested, then arrest me.
“The locals confirmed to me that I can wear whatever I want. But I didn’t know that my video in a bikini walking by the sea would be such a big deal.
“The whole country is speaking about it. Everybody knows me here, and I saw that I was accepted.”

I’m the ‘World Cup’s hottest fan’ – the Qataris can arrest me if they want over my ‘immodesty’ but all the locals love it

    Pochettino praises Rashford
Ex-Tottenham boss has praised Manchester United and England superstar Marcus Rashford.
The Red Devils ace is the World Cup’s top scorer with three goals.
He scored a brace in the 3-0 group win over Wales.
On Rashford, Poch said: “I’ve always liked [Rashford].
“I knew of his process because I was in England, but I think he’s a great player.
“He just needs the confidence and for himself to believe, to put him at the top level. The quality is there for him.”
England using special goal net to practice penalties
England are using a special net for penalty practice every day ahead of the World Cup knockout stages.
Gareth Southgate’s penalty takers are being tasked with trying to get greater accuracy on their spot-kicks.
And that involves the special net being used for extra practice during each session.
And no doubt that will now be increased as the Three Lions prepare to face Senegal in the last-16 on Sunday.
The net has been designed so that players will aim for the corners of the goal.

Bellingham celebrates Foden’s goal BEFORE it goes in
Jude Bellingham celebrated Phil Foden’s goal against Wales BEFORE the ball had hit the back of the net.
Manchester City ace Foden, 22, scored the second in the 3-0 win over the Dragons.
t might have been his first start of the tournament, but Bellingham clearly wasn’t worried about Foden’s match sharpness.
The 19-year-old Borussia Dortmund starlet was so confident Foden would score he raised his arms in celebration before the ball nestled into the back of the net.
Bellingham was then the first to reach Foden as the playmaker wheeled away in jubilation after scoring.

    Saliba slams manager selection
Arsenal defender William Saliba has pointed towards Didier Deschamps’ team selection and set-up as to why France lost 1-0 to Tunisia.
The reigning defending champions are through to the World Cup knockouts but the defeat was embarrassing nonetheless.
Saliba told beIN SPORTS: “It definitely wasn’t an easy game today.
“The team was changed, there were a lot of players who had never played together, so it was a bit difficult.
“It was a bit better in the second half at the start, but then we conceded that goal. We were pushing at the end to try and score but unfortunately it wasn’t enough.
“I wouldn’t say there was a sense of fear, but we were shaken up a bit at the start of the match. But there were players who weren’t in their usual position, so they weren’t used to it.”

Bale has LAFC contract break clause
Gareth Bale must decide by the end of February whether he will return to LAFC for the new season in the US.
And that could give a big clue over whether he intends to make himself available to Wales for the Euro 2024 qualifiers which start the following month.
The 33-year-old signed an 18-month deal with the MLS Cup winners in the summer and is due back to start preparing for the 2023 campaign in the New Year.
Senior figures at LA are expecting him to return but it is understood there is a break in his contract at this point – if all parties agree.
    Full-time: Saudi Arabia 1 Mexico 2
Heartbreak for Mexico, who had the momentum to pip Poland to second.
Argentina could have stuck more past the Poles, but failed to do so.
Saudi also scored late on to pull Mexico’s goal difference back down.

    Full-time: Poland 0 Argentina 2
Wow! Argentina top Group C after getting off to a horrible start with a loss to Saudi Arabia.
They will now play Australia in the round of 16, avoiding reigning champions France.
Poland hang on JUST to come home in second.
Mexico conceded late on to Saudi Arabia, putting their goal difference one below Poland.
Premier League duo Julián Álvarez and Alexis Mac Allister got the goals for the Copa America champs.

Canelo in grovelling apology to Messi
Canelo Alvarez has issued a grovelling apology after his threat to Lionel Messi over the World Cup shirt row.
The Argentine’s foot brushed a Mexico shirt on the dressing room floor which Canelo took as a sign of disrespect, leading to a threat being made.
Canelo has since walked that back.
He wrote: “These last few days I got carried away by the passion and love I feel for my country and made comments that were out of place for which I want to apologise to Messi and the people of Argentina.
“Every day we learn something new and this time it was my turn.
“I wish both teams much success in their matches today and here we will continue supporting Mexico until the end.”
Mendes ruled out for rest of tournament
Nuno Mendes has dealt a huge blow to Portugal’s World Cup hopes after being ruled out of the remainder of the tournament.
The Paris Saint-Germain defender limped off the pitch in tears during the Portuguese’s win over Uruguay on Monday night.
Mendes appeared to suffer a thigh strain, although the severity of the injury wasn’t fully known.
But the full-back’s tournament has come to a premature end after further assessment from team doctors.
    Poland 0 Argentina 2
Uh oh….. Mexico and Poland are level on goal difference.
Julian Alvarez has got the goal for Argentina and there are tears in the stands.
The final 20 minutes are going to be a MADNESS and you don’t want to miss it.
    Poland are still second.

    Saudi Arabia 0 Mexico 1
Group C has sparked into life!
Striker Henry Martín has the goal and Mexico are level on points with second-placed Poland as it stands but remain third.

    Poland 0 Argentina 1
Argentina have a breakthrough and it’s the Brighton man who has the goal.
Alexis Mac Allister met a cross and guided his effort into the far corner.

Martin Blackburn half-time assessment: Saudi 0 Mexico 0
Something is going to have to give here – or both these teams are going out of the World Cup tonight.
Nobody can doubt the efforts of the two teams in a frantic first half played out in front of a raucous crowd at the Lusail.
But the busiest man on the park was English ref Michael Oliver who seemed to be blowing for fouls every couple of minutes.
And the North East based ref must have known what to expect from the two teams with the most yellow cards in the competition so far.
Saudi keeper Mohammed Al Owais has made a couple of useful saves – particularly one to deny Alexis Vega early on.
But Mexico are still looking for their first goal of the tournament – two and a half games in.
Herve Renard’s Saudis were well drilled as usual but may need to show more adventure in the second half if they are to reach the knock-out rounds.
Ali Al Hassan’s diving header which zipped across the face of goal was as close as they came to breaking the deadlock.
Martin Lipton half-time assessment: Poland 0 Argentina 0
To be fair to the Argentinian fans, even the Messi spot-kick miss hasn’t stopped them giving it large.
Then again, it feels like virtually the entire half has been played just in front of Szczesny.
Poland haven’t conceded a goal in this tournament so far.
You can see why. Terrific, determined and brave defending.
But can they really keep it up for another 45 minutes – plus, well five, six, seven, eight on top?
That would really be something remarkable.

    Ronaldo misses Portugal training
Cristiano Ronaldo missed Portugal training today ahead of their final group game amid speculation over his Saudi Arabian transfer.
The 37-year-old has reportedly been offered the chance to become the highest-paid sportsperson of all time by Al-Nassr.
The superstar is a free agent after leaving Manchester United last week.
But SunSport understands Ronaldo is still keen to play Champions League football and has not agreed the offer of a two-and-a-half year contract worth £173 million-a-year with Al-Nassr, despite reports in Marca.
However, his current focus is on trying to fire Portugal to World Cup glory.

    Saliba on France loss
Arsenal’s William Saliba has given his assessment on France’s shock World Cup loss to Tunisia.
The reigning world champs lost 1-0 and were denied an equaliser in added-time by VAR.
Saliba, who started the game, said: “It definitely wasn’t an easy game today. The team was changed, there were a lot of players who had never played together, so it was a bit difficult.
“It was a bit better in the second half at the start, but then we conceded that goal. We were pushing at the end to try and score but unfortunately it wasn’t enough.”

    Saudi Arabia vs Mexico
The line-ups for Saudi vs Mexico are IN and both teams have a chance of making the knockouts.
Danger man Salem Aldawsari starts for the Middle Eastern team.
Mohamed Kanno has also impressed in the middle of the park.

As for Mexico, they’ll need Guillermo Ochoa in fine form.
Ajax’s Edson Álvarez starts in the middle of the park and will need to extinguish any fires.

    You know the drill.

    Last dance?
THIS just might be Lionel Messi’s final World Cup match, with Argentina needing victory over Poland to be certain of qualification for the knock-out stage.
The little maestro, who will turn 39 during the next World Cup in 2026, has scored in both of his side’s matches so far – in the defeat by Saudi Arabia and the victory over Mexico.
Lose and Argentina are out. Win and they will top the group and face Australia.
Draw and it’s either a titanic last-16 clash with France or they’re out, depending on the result of the Saudi-Mexico game.
Poland were buoyed by their talisman and goal machine Robert Lewandowski scoring his first World Cup finals goal in their victory over the Saudis last time out and are bidding to reach the last 16 for the first time since 1986.
    Poland vs Argentina
    The teamsheets are IN!

Poland 0 Argentina 2 LIVE RESULT: Mac Allister and Alvarez FIRE Argentina into last-16 after Messi missed penalty

ARGENTINA have topped Group C with victory over Poland, who also make it into the last-16 by the skin of their teeth.Lionel Messi missed a penalty in the first-half after a VAR intervened to send the referee over to the monitor.
After review, the man in the middle decided that Wojciech Szczesny impeded the forward, but the goalkeeper made up for his error and pulled off a fantastic save to deny Messi.
However, just moments after the restart, Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister fired his side into the lead.
Man City star Julian Alvarez netted a second to give the South Americans a comfortable lead.
At one point, Mexico and Poland were level on points, goals scored, goals against, and head-to-head record… So it was set to go to fair play (with Poland having the better record) to decide who proceed before a late Saudi Arabia goal secured qualification for Poland.

    Thanks for joining us.
We’re starting to see why Argentina were so highly rated heading into this tournament.
They’ve now completed their redemption from that horror opening defeat to Saudi Arabia.
Argentina showed signs of improvement last weekend against Mexico but they blew Poland away tonight.
Lionel Messi was fantastic despite his first half penalty miss – he carries the weight of a nation on his shoulders and he continues to inspire his team to victory after victory.
However, it must be said that Poland were awful tonight.
They seemingly came into the game not with the idea of winning, but with a plan to avoid a heavy defeat and in the end they just about managed it.
It’s no wonder that Robert Lewandowski scores so rarely in World Cups if his team always plays as negatively as they did tonight.
Argentina progress into the last 16 as group winners and will face off against one of the World Cup’s surprise packages, Australia.
Poland, meanwhile, face the daunting task of a trip to the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium to play a France team that rested most of their key players earlier on today.
Until then, all that’s left for me to say is thank you for joining us and I’ll speak to you next time!
I’m off to buy a couple of Argentina bobble heads.

    Alexis Mac Allister
The Brighton and Argentina forward on today’s performance and how the team handled the defeat to Saudi Arabia in their opening game.
I’m happy because it was a convincing performance. We were looking for the goal at all times. I think we went back to being the team we used to be. We handled the ball more, we were calm and we didn’t despair. We played a great game.
The first match was a blow that caught us in time. We started to trust the group a little more. We went back to being the same team we used to be. We didn’t despair.Alexis Mac AllisterSunSport
    Messi quotes
Lionel Messi has been giving his thoughts on today’s victory and the challenges ahead.
With anger for having missed the penalty, but the team came out stronger after that mistake of mine. We knew that, once the first goal went in, it was going to change the game.
The match with Australia is going to be very difficult. Anyone beats anyone, everything is very even. We have to prepare the game in the best way we always do.
We must be calm and go game by game. Now another World Cup begins and hopefully we can continue to maintain what we did today.Lionel MessiSunSport
    Julian Alvarez
Lionel Scaloni chose to trust his young forward today and it more than worked out for him.
Alvarez was outstanding from start to finish and perhaps should have scored more than his solitary goal.
Lautaro Martinez replaced Alvarez for the last 10 minutes and his wastefulness in front of proved why his manager had overlooked him for a starting spot.
Alvarez has surely cemented his place up top for the Australia game on Saturday night.

    Lewandowski
Poland’s front man was very isolated tonight.
The game plan seemed to be to knock the ball long for him and hope he does something special.
France will be licking their lips at the prospect of facing them in the next round.
    Match stats
27 percent possession and zero shots on target for Poland tonight.
    Not good.

    Magical Messi
    Argentina’s talisman was outstanding tonight.
He may have missed a penalty in the first half but he tormented Poland during the second 45.
He’s got the bit between his teeth at the moment.
Can he carry Argentina through to the final again as he did in 2014?

    Inside the stadium
    SunSport’s Martin Lipton in Qatar:
Half the Polish squad were staring at a mobile phone, watching the delayed last few seconds of the other game.
That whistle at Lusail brought a jig of pure joy at Stadium 974.
    Hugs, clasped hands, thrill.
And then the realisation, perhaps, that it’s France on Sunday.
    Good luck lads.Martin LiptonSunSport
    Poland through
It’s full time in the other game and Mexico are out.
Poland are through and will face France in the last 16.
    Some reward, that!
    Inside the stadium
    SunSport’s Martin Lipton in Qatar:
    Now they know.
That Saudi goal has, surely, put them through.
Celebrations, punching the air, in the stands and on the pitch.
No defeat has ever been celebrated more like a victory.
Unless Mexico get a third, of course.Still standing around..Martin LiptonSunSport
    Goal for Saudi Arabia
Salem Al Dawsari has scored for Saudi Arabia against Mexico.
That all but confirms Poland’s progress into the last 16.
    Inside the stadium
    SunSport’s Martin Lipton in Qatar:
This is like nothing I’ve ever witnessed – although maybe because I was at Anfield in 1995 and The Etihad 17 years later, rather than watching United on the final day.
Final whistle brings more glory choruses from the Argentine fans.
But the Poles do not know where to look or what to think.
They’re utterly, utterly exhausted. Spent. And waiting, waiting, waiting…Martin LiptonSunSport
    Full Time: Poland 0 – 2 Argentina
It’s full time here and Argentina have won the group.
It just remains to be seen whether Poland will join them in the knockout rounds.
    Poland 0 – 2 Argentina
    90+6, Just seconds remaining now.
The game between Saudi Arabia is a few minutes behind this one so we’ll have to stick around to find out if Poland have snuck into the last 16.
    Poland 0 – 2 Argentina
90+5, Messi has just mugged off Lewandowski on the halfway line.
Lewandowski has a few goes at trying to steal the ball from the great man but just ends up fouling him.
Barcelona’s past and present coming up against each other there.
    Inside the stadium
    SunSport’s Martin Lipton in Qatar:
Six minutes will feel like torture for the Poles.
So near – despite deserving nothing – yet potentially so far.
This Argentine party doesn’t sound like it’s ever going to stop, though. Fair enough.
Their side has bossed this from the first kick and should have won by far more.Martin LiptonSunSport
    Poland 0 – 2 Argentina
93, Kiwior clears off the line!
The Poland defender heads Tagliafico’s chip off the line to keep his country in the World Cup….for now!
    Poland 0 – 2 Argentina
90+1, We’re into the first of 6 minutes of time added on at the end of the game.
Argentina are just popping the ball to each other while Poland stand around and watch them do it.
    Poland 0 – 2 Argentina
90, As there’ s nothing much happening in this game, enjoy this great photo of Lewandowski trying to keep up with Messi tonight.

    Poland 0 – 2 Argentina
88, The intensity has understandably fallen out of this match in the closing stages.
The result in this game is beyond doubt but Poland’s World Cup hopes are on a knife-edge.
Will we see some late drama here?
    Poland 0 – 2 Argentina
85, And that’s way Lautaro Martinez was dropped for this game.
He’s one-on-one with the goalkeeper but rolls his shot a few yards wide of the post.
Poland let out a sigh of relief.
They’d have been out of the World Cup had that gone in.
    Poland 0 – 2 Argentina
82, Krychowiak is coming off for Poland – they can’t afford for him to get a red or they’ll be out!
Piatek comes on in his place.
Argentina are also making another change as Mac Allister makes way for Thiago Almada.
    Inside the stadium
    SunSport’s Martin Lipton in Qatar:
Party Central for the Argentine fans. This could be Buenos Aires, Rosario, Mar del Plata or anywhere else.
Certainly it’s not the sort of racket they get in Doha very often.
    It’s an incredible situation, too.
Four years ago in Russia, Japan played out the last few minutes of their final group game knowing they were ahead of Senegal in the other game on yellow cards.
Beyond dangerous mind. Especially when Krychowiak’s careless foul on half-way means the gap is just two cautions now.
One silly mistake and a red….and they’d be out.Martin LiptonSunSport
    Poland 0 – 2 Argentina
78, Lionel Scaloni makes two more changes to La Abiceleste.
Enzo Fernandez and Julian Alvarez make way for Lautaro Martinez and German Pezzella.
    Poland 0 – 2 Argentina
    78, A yellow card for Poland…
Krychowiak goes into the book for a pull back on Mac Allister.

Australia 0 Denmark 0 LIVE SCORE: Irvine fires over as score remains level in winner-takes-all match at World Cup 2022

DENMARK are dominating possession but have not yet found a way to break down Australia in a crucial clash as it is level at half-time. Riley McGree tested Kasper Schmeichel in the first-half but neither side have broken the deadlock.
Jackson Irvine has come the closest in the second period, with Australia looking to open the scoring as the midfielder fired over the bar from inside the box.

    48. Denmark bring the ball forward but lose the ball too easily.
McGree crosses to Irvine but his shot goes over the bar.
Much better football by The Socceroos.
    Australia 0-0 Denmark
    46. Now we have the first 45 minutes out of the way, this game should get more exciting the closer we move to the full time whistle.
This is the business end of the group stages, qualification is at risk.
Australia have an early corner which causes problems in the box, as a shot comes in it is headed away for another corner.

    Kick-off: Australia 0-0 Denmark
The Socceroos get the second half started.
Big half of football for both teams ahead.
Baccus comes on for Goodwin for Australia.
Bah is on for Kristensen for Denmark.
    HT: Australia 0-0 Denmark
Everything that Denmark do well comes through Christian Eriksen, meaning he is often targeted by opponent’s tactical set ups.
The Danes need to work harder to find him the ball, draw the opposition on and create pocket of space for him to use.
To stand any hope of scoring, their playmaker needs more involvement.

Inside the ground – half time analysis
SunSport’s Andy Dillon reports from the Al-Janoub Stadium:
DENMARK are sleepwalking out of the World Cup.
Five shots in the first half with two on target but there is something decidedly downbeat about the performance.
Australia are frightened to commit forwards and Denmark have forgotten how to win at the World Cup.
They have drawn four and lost one of their last five WC matches – last beating Peru in Russia 2018.
    HT: Australia 0-0 Denmark
Neither side have really created much to work the opposition keeper in that first half.
The Socceroos seemed to come into the game more in the final fifteen minutes of the half.
The shots we have seen have been routine saves for the keepers.

    HT: Australia 0-0 Denmark
The referee brings the first half to a close.
Nothing to separate the two teams at the break.
As it stands, Australia would progress to the last 16.
    Australia 0-0 Denmark
    45. We are going to three days of added time.
Not quite, just the two minutes.
Australia press forward looking to get a cheeky late goal to take into the half time interval with them.
Denmark’s defence is like a Lego wall, solid and not something you would want to step on.

    Australia 0-0 Denmark
    43. Australia have looked much better in the last fifteen minutes, offering more attacking threat.
That has caused the game to become more open.
Lindstrom cuts in from the left and looks to cross with the outside of his right foot and Ryan collects.
    Australia 0-0 Denmark
    41. Skov Olsen is looking dangerous when on the ball.
Denmark’s issue is that they are not getting him the ball enough.
Ryan takes his time with the goal kick, his tactic for most of this half.
Let’s hope VAR are not adding this time on or none of us may get home this evening.
    Australia 0-0 Denmark
    39. The aim for Australia will be to ensure they are on at least level terms by half time.
Eriksen gives the ball away and offers the chance for The Socceroos to come forward.
More keen to keep the ball than do something with it, McGree crosses but the delivery is poor.
    Australia 0-0 Denmark
    37. The problem both of these teams have, it sounds like from the reports of the other game that Tunisia are dominating France, with Les Bleus yet to have a shot on goal.
That makes things awkward for both teams here.
They need to play to win in case of an African goal.

    Australia 0-0 Denmark
    35. Australia are spending a lot of time in their own half.
They win the ball and look to go direct but Leckie could not bring the ball under his spell.
He tried to pull it out of the air and it nearly set him through on goal.
    Close.
    Australia 0-0 Denmark
    33. This will be mission accomplished so far for Australia.
Providing France do not lose to Tunisia, this would see The Socceroos through.
Denmark are having the lion’s share of possession but are struggling to create any clean-cut chances.
    Australia 0-0 Denmark
    31. Lindstrom is seeing more and more of the ball.
He is working well with Maehle down the left hand side.
Aaron Mooy is having to cover a lot of ground to support in these situations.
    Australia 0-0 Denmark
    29. Australia are trying to offer more of a threat in the attacking third now.
Schmeichel has yet to be really tested.
Denmark are looking to stretch the Australian defence with direct balls to the wide men.

    Australia 0-0 Denmark
    27. In their two previous group games, Australia have started the strongest having led against France and Tunisia.
They have not looked like that team in the opening stages of this game.
Denmark are looking the far more threatening.
    Australia 0-0 Denmark
    25. Australia are defending deep to every last man.
This time Aaron Mooy makes a challenge and tries to clear.
Denmark come straight back at them and Skov Olsen gets a shot off at goal but scuffs it slightly and Ryan easily saves.
    Australia 0-0 Denmark
    23. Denmark need to manage their physicality at set pieces.
They are already giving away far too many free kicks.
It gives Australia the chance to take a breather.
McGree fires a shot of from distance but Schmeichel saves with ease.
    Australia 0-0 Denmark
    21. That was good goalkeeping by Matt Ryan.
Denmark are dominating the early stages but it is clear to see that Australia plan a counter-attacking style.
The Socceroos need to keep things tight at the back for that game plan to bring them a result.
    Credit: PA
    Australia 0-0 Denmark
    19. Leckie comes forward on a rare counter attack and the fans liven up immediately.
They look to come forward quickly, but the final pass is lacking.
Denmark counter and the ball is cut back from the byline and Ryan is forced to make two good saves to get the ball clear.
    Australia 0-0 Denmark
    17. The Danes have got a great record of getting out of the groups.
Four out of five times they have made the knockout rounds.
Denmark play a good passing game, when they look to get forward, it is good to watch.
Australia 0-0 Denmark – Skov Olsen chance
    15. The Socceroos are having to weather a storm here.
This time Skov Olsen looks to get a shot off on goal but again it is well blocked and ricochets off the Denmark man.
Australia are struggling to get out of their own half right now.
Australia 0-0 Denmark – Ryan save
    13. Matt Ryan does brilliantly to tip an effort over the bar.
It is at his near post so he should save it but it was struck with some venom by Jensen.
Denmark have started the more positive.
    Credit: Getty
    Australia 0-0 Denmark
    11. The good news for Socceroo fans is that VAR has ruled out that Tunisian goal.
That is the fun with the final matchday, things can change in the group standings in an instant.
Denmark get a ball into the box and Lindstrom meets it but Degenek does brilliantly to block the shot.

No changes from either side as we kick things off in the second half.

    Peep!
Off we go again in Qatar!!!
    Tunisia vs France stats
France dominated 57 per cent of possession throughout the first half.
Les Bleus, though, couldn’t produce anything meaningful as they only managed two shots off target.
Tunisia, on the other hand, registered three shots, two of which were on target.
    More below:

    World from the ground
Here’s what SunSport’s man on the field Mark Irwin makes of the fist half:
Goalless at Education City where Tunisia have dominated the French reserve team without seriously threatening to force a breakthrough.
The Eagles of Carthage have had plenty of possession but need to test veteran keeper Steve Mandanda more because he looks like an accident waiting to happen.
The best chance of the first-half fell to Kingsley Coman but his first touch was an absolute shocker and his finish was even worse as he missed the target by yards.
Didier Deschamps’ shadow team aren’t exactly staking a claim to keep their place in the starting line-up for the matches that matter.
And all those rested superstars watching from the bench certainly don’t look as though they are fearing for their places.Mark IrwinSunSport
    HT: Tunisia 0-0 France
France and Tunisia are goalless after the first half at the Education City Stadium.
Didier Deschamps’ heavily rotated side has struggled so far against the Tunisians, who are very much up for it.
The Eagles of Carthage thought they scored their first goal of the 2022 World Cup after just eight minutes.
Nader Ghandri met a wicked free-kick delivery by Wahbi Khazri on the left and beat Steve Mandanda but was caught just inches offside

    Peep!
    That’s half-time in Qatar!!!
    45+2 Tunisia 0-0 France
    Chance!
Tunisia make a last-ditch effort with a powerful shot from the left by Khazri but the ball goes over the crossbar
    45 Tunisia 0-0 France
Just two more minutes of added time to go.
France should be happy with that score based on their performance so far
    43 Tunisia 0-0 France
Tunisia manager Kadri looks uneasy, he would have wanted a goal by now.
Still, the Tunisians will love the half-time news of Australia and Denmark still being 0-0.
Especially after their strong first-half showing
    40 Tunisia 0-0 France
France are slowly gaining ground with the obvious mission of maintaining a clean sheet by half-time.
Deschamps still doesn’t have reason to bring his stars in as Australia vs Denmark is still 0-0
    38 Tunisia 0-0 France
We’re slowly approaching half-time and France’s heavily rotated side is just managing to survive.
Tunisia should be disappointed for not hitting the net – at least from an onside position…
    35 Tunisia 0-0 France
    Chance!
Tunisia star Khazri delivers a powerful long-range shot and Mandanda saves with a lunge to his left
    33 Tunisia 0-0 France
Tunisia are keeping their lines high and that leads to some tremendous press in midfield.
France are struggling to move the ball forward and are often dispossessed in the middle of the pitch
    30 Tunisia 0-0 France
    Chance
Tunisia continue to knock on France’s door with Slimane getting a header that gets a defender’s deflection.
But the ball goes safely to Mandanda’s hands
    28 Tunisia 0-0 France
    Yellow card
We have the first booking of the match and it goes to Tunisia ace Kechrida after a late challenge on Gunedouzi
    25 Tunisia 0-0 France
    Chance!
France register their first big chance with Coman getting inside the area but a heavy touch leads to a shot way off target
    25 Tunisia 0-0 France
Liverpool ace Konate has been having a marvellous game so far, France’s best player so far in the first half.
Tunisia’s attacks are constantly cut by the centre-back, some crucial tackles on Khazri and Kechrida
    23 Tunisia 0-0 France
France are obviously struggling to put anything together, those players are not used to playing together.
Don’t be shocked if we see Mbappe coming on in the second half…
    20 Tunisia 0-0 France
Tunisia have been dominating tempo so far in the match.
The crowd – mostly Tunisian – is absolutely loving this.
It is so obvious Deschamps is thinking about the Round of 16.
Really good game by Liverpool ace Konate so far in defence
    18 Tunisia 0-0 France
    Here’s a sight we’re not used to…

US matchwinner Pulisic ‘not keen on move’
Christian Pulisic hopes to stay at Chelsea despite links to Manchester United, Arsenal and Newcastle.
That’s according to Sky Sport News’ Florian Plettenberg amid claims the Blues might be willing to cash in on the fringe attacker, who put the USA into the World Cup last 16 with the only goal against Iran.
Borussia Dortmund are also said to be keen on reuniting with the 24-year-old, with Liverpool mentioned too.
Plettenberg described the rumours as “not hot” and posted: “Been told that he wants to stay at #CFC in winter.”
    You can milk victory
Gareth Southgate has promised his England players they can kick back with a MILKSHAKE on their day off on Wednesday as reward for setting up a last-16 clash with Senegal, writes TOM BARCLAY.
Four years ago the Three Lions boss allowed his squad to have a few beers after making it out of the group at the Russia World Cup.
But with Qatar’s alcohol stocks as dry as a Middle-Eastern desert, the players will have to stick to milky soft drinks instead while they relax after sealing safe passage to the knockouts.
Boss Southgate joked: “We’ve got loads of milkshake back at the hotel!
“Everything is different here, isn’t it? We’re embracing it.
“We love our base camp, the people who are operating the hotel are fabulous. We’re enjoying each other’s company, the players are really tight.
“They get a day off now. They need that breather. They don’t have to look at our faces, which I’m sure they’re delighted with.
“We can start to prepare for the knockout round. The big business starts now, really.”
    Pulisic celebrates from hospital bed
Christian Pulisic was forced to watch the end of USA’s nervy clash with Iran from a hospital bed after injuring himself netting the winner.
The Chelsea winger grabbed the only goal of the game in the 38th minute, which included a painful collision with Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand.
After several minutes of treatment, Pulisic was taken off at half time, and went to hospital soon after having complained of dizziness and abdominal pain.

Yet he soon posted a picture of himself on social media lying in a hospital bed celebrating the win after keeping track of the score on his phone.
And ‘Captain America’ has assured worried USA fans that he will be fine for their last-16 clash with Holland on Saturday.
Boss Gregg Berhalter explained: “He was taken to hospital as a precaution. He was feeling some dizziness and suffered an abdominal injury. We facetimed him after from the locker room [at full-time]. We got to see him and he is in good spirits.
“My guess is he brought his phone with him and he was just updating one of these football score apps.
“Christian makes those sorts of runs. That’s what he does and that’s the special quality he has. He makes it really difficult for defenders.”
Pulisic posted on social media: “So proud of my guys. I’ll be ready for Saturday, don’t worry.”
    Out of Line
Gary Lineker couldn’t help but take a sly dig at ITV after revealing they’ll broadcast England’s World Cup last 16 tie with Senegal.
England booked their place in the knockout stages of the tournament with a 3-0 win over Wales on Tuesday night.

And BBC host Lineker stunned fans by publicly plugging ITV’s coverage of Sunday’s match against Senegal.
The former Everton and Three Lions hitman said: “England finished top and will take on Senegal at 7pm on Sunday.
“And that’s on live on, well – uh – ITV. Oh well.”
Footy fans were quick to comment, with one saying: “Gary Lineker mentioning ITV, the forbidden door opens once again.”
And another said: “Can’t believe Gary Lineker said that Senegal vS England is on… ITV.”
One remarked: “Enjoyed Gary Lineker mentioning ITV just then.
“Think that might be the first time I’ve ever heard either channel acknowledge the fact that there’s another broadcaster showing the games they don’t have.”
    Win, Lews or draw
Polish Wag Anna Lewandowska takes a hands-on approach to supporting her country.
The model, who posed in a printed bikini for swimwear brand Calzedonia, has been in Qatar cheering on her husband, Poland captain Robert Lewandowski.

The Barcelona striker will be hoping to get on the scoresheet again tonight as Poland take on Argentina at the 974 stadium.
Lewandowski secured their 2-0 win over Saudi Arabia, right, with a stunning goal in the 82nd minute.

He married martial arts guru Anna, who is a black belt in karate, in 2013.
The couple, both 34, share a daughter, Klara, five, together.

    Ampadu in tears over exit
Wales star Ethan Ampadu broke down in tears after Wales were knocked out and demolished by England.
The Welsh were in the game at half-time before the Three Lions went up a gear and won convincingly 3-0.

Ampadu started all three of the Dragons’ group games but could not help them make it through to the knockout stages.
Wales picked up just one point as they finished bottom of Group B after a 64-year wait to be part of a World Cup.
As the final whistle went on their campaign in Qatar, Ampadu was seen crying into his shirt knowing his dream of progressing was over.
He sat on the pitch in disbelief as he was consoled by his teammates.
Three Lions players such as Harry Maguire, Kalvin Phillips and Jordan Henderson also went over to the 22-year-old to pick him up off the floor.
Jude: We got the balance right
Jude Bellingham believes England combined the best of their displays against Iran and the USA in the 3-0 win over Wales.
Marcus Rashford’s two solo specials and Phil Foden’s simple effort rewarded the Three Lions’ rampant second half as they topped the group and condemned the Dragons to bottom place.
And midfield general Bellingham, told BBC One: “I think what you saw in the first game was an attacking display, the second was defensive, this was a mix.
“It was good to tie them up today.”
Of Rashford’s opener, he said: “The free kick, in a game like this there is big pressure, the way he delivered was brilliant.”
And the Borussia Dortmund star praised England’s options going forward as Rashford and Foden came in for Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling.
Bellingham said: “We’ve got loads of attacking depth, whoever comes on makes an impact.
“The changes don’t change the style of the team. I’m really pleased for Phil, given the attention on the last few days.”
United and Liverpool linked to Caicedo
Man United have reportedly joined the race for Brighton and Ecuador star Moises Caicedo.
Sky Germany claims the Red Devils are ready to battle Chelsea for the box-to-box midfielder.
It’s reckoned United see Caicedo as an alternative to Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham.
But rivals Liverpool are also interested in the youngster as they too search for a new midfielder.
    Marcus celebration for tragic friend
Marcus Rashford’s celebration after scoring for England was a tribute to a friend who recently lost their battle with cancer.
The Three Lions ace scored twice in the 3-0 win over Wales.
His first was a stunning free-kick from range that gave Wales keeper Danny Ward no chance.

Rashford then celebrated the strike by kneeling down and pointing to the sky with his eyes closed.
Speaking after the game, Rashford revealed the celebration was in honour of a friend who died just days before the match.
He said of his recent heartbreak: “Unfortunately I lost one of my friends a couple of days ago.
“He’s had quite a long battle with cancer so I’m pleased I managed to score for him.
“He’s always been a big supporter of mine, he was just a great person and I’m pleased he came into my life really.”

England cut to 8-1 to win World Cup
England have been cut to joint fourth favourites to win the World Cup and are 2-7 on to get past Senegal in the last 16.
Coral slashed the odds on the Three Lions winning the tournament to 8-1 alongside Argentina – behind Brazil, France and Spain.
Coral’s John Hill said: “It was straightforward for England in the end in their final game in Group B, and as a result of that impressive performance, they have been trimmed in the outright market to 8/1.
“England are warm favourites to get past Senegal in the last 16. They are odds-on to win that game in 90 minutes on Sunday evening.”
World Cup outright: 5-2 Brazil, 5 France, 13-2 Spain, 8 Argentina, England, 11 Portugal, 12 Portugal, 14 Netherlands, 40 Bar.
    England vs Senegal – 90 mins: 8-13 England, 11-4 Draw, 9-2 Senegal.
England vs Senegal – to qualify: 2-7 England, 11-4 Senegal.
Gutted Bale vows to play on
Gareth Bale admits Wales have had a poor World Cup – but insists he won’t quit international football and they should be proud to have just qualified.
Losing 3-0 to England sent Wales home from Qatar with just one point from three group games.
But Bale, 33, told the BBC: “We should be proud to have made the World Cup.
“We’d have loved to have played better and created more chances.
“It just didn’t happen for us at this World Cup. It’s been difficult, this tournament. We haven’t played very well.
“But we played with our hearts and gave everything.”
Bale claimed he is committed to continuing his international career – for as long as he can and is still wanted.
    Southgate hails Foden and Rashford
England boss Gareth Southgate believes goal heroes Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden exploded into action after switching flanks.
Southgate rated Rashford’s free-kick opener in the 3-0 win against Wales as an “incredible strike”.
But he claimed the duo – recalled as England cruised into the last 16 – had been a bit “quiet” before the break.
    England sub ratings
    Trent Alexander-Arnold (for Walker, 58mins) – 6
Neat and tidy first appearance of tournament
    KALVIN PHILLIPS (for Rice, 58mins) – 7
Impressive comeback, good pass to set up third
    CALLUM WILSON (for Kane, 58mins) – 6
Energetic and played nice and high
    KIERAN TRIPPIER (for Shaw, 65mins)
Did the necessary, showed he can be left-sided option
    JACK GREALISH (for Rashford, 76mins) – 6
Kept possession well to close out game
Rest of the England starting XI ratings
    PHIL FODEN – 8
After slow start, England’s most wanted justified his selection and then some. Dangerous off both flanks and took his goal neatly. Hard to leave out now.
    JUDE BELLINGHAM – 7
Not a Rolls Royce as against Iran, but purred nicely along in a less flashy supporting role, especially in the second half as England went up a gear.
MARCUS RASHFORD – 9 STAR MAN
Faded in first half after early chance was saved. But turned his and England’s night around with fabulous opener, stole ball for second, scored third.
    HARRY KANE – 7
Created early chance and teed up Foden superbly for quickfire second goal. Still looked a bit leggy so no surprise to see him go off to save energy for knockouts.
    More England ratings
    LUKE SHAW – 6
Untroubled in defence. May feel he should have done better from his set-pieces and crossing opportunities. Did enough to keep his place.
    JORDAN HENDERSON – 5
Unfairly criticised before, but gave the doubters some more ammunition. Tried his heart out as ever but very little that he did came off.
    DECLAN RICE – 7
Had a much easier time than against USA and gave England a platform to build from. Given a well-earned rest once the game was won.
    England ratings vs Wales
Here’s how SunSport’s Dan King assessed the Three Lions after the 3-0 defeat of Wales.
    JORDAN PICKFORD – 6
A first-half spectator apart from playing keep-ball with his centre backs. Coped well with Maguire deflecting Kieffer Moore’s effort, but that was about it.
    KYLE WALKER – 6
Decent return. Combative and prepared to be enterprising, stepping up into midfield or putting in crosses. Understandably ran out of gas and went off before the hour.
    JOHN STONES – 6
Cope easily with Wales’ so-called attack yet not quite as effective on the ball and missed great late chance. Looks in good nick, but tougher nights are ahead.
    HARRY MAGUIRE – 6
Lost the odd aerial duel to Kieffer Moore but with no impact and was otherwise effective. Attempted some long diagonals to vary England’s game.
    Rashford: We put it right
Two-goal England hero Marcus Rashford says the rout of Wales makes up for the bore draw with the USA.
The Manchester United striker told the BBC: “We were a little bit disappointed with the game against the  USA but we responded with a good performance.”
    England and USA through
They were the best two teams in the group performance wise – but they went through in vastly contrasting ways tonight.
The Three Lions crushed a sorry Wales side 3-0 while the US clung on desperately to see off Iran 1-0.
    Result: Iran 0 USA 1
The US deservedly join England in qualifying for the KO stages.
Christian Pulisic hammered their 38th minute winner as the Iranians failed to conjure a single effort on target.
Iran utterly dominated possession in the last quarter of an hour – plus the 10 minutes of stoppage time – but the Yanks defended well.
They did, though, survive huge shouts for a penalty in the TENTH MINUTE of time added on – as video replays denied them a spot-kick.
It means England top the group on seven points – so will face Senegal in the last 16.
The US came second on five points, with Iran on three and the woeful Welsh just one.
Iran 0 USA 1: HERE is our match blog for all the reaction.
Wales 0 England 3: All the reaction HERE with our match blog.
    Result: Wales 0 England 3
England win the group and Wales finish bottom – summing up the gulf between the teams.
Marcus Rashford struck twice brilliantly and Phil Foden slipped in the second goals as England upped their domination with a second-half treble.
    England cruising, USA edging it…
ENGLAND are 3-0 up against outclassed Wales in stoppage time – while the USA lead Iran 1-0 as they enter time added on.
That means the Three Lions topping the group, with Wales and Iran heading home.
Iran, in fact, have yet to have a shot on target – a dire stat when they need just a draw to go through.
Iran 0 USA 1: HERE is our match blog.
Wales 0 England 3: HERE is our match blog.
Gakpo and Frimpong ‘would cost £65m’
Cody Gakpo and Jeremie Frimpong would cost Manchester United around £65million together, reports suggest.
The Red Devils are favourites to land Holland’s PSV winger – for about £43m.
Uncapped Dutch anchorman Frimpong would be much cheaper – but Bayer Leverkusen are keen to keep him.
    ‘Don’t sign Cristiano’
Newcastle legend Chris Waddle insists his former club’s mega rich owners shouldn’t sign Cristiano Ronaldo after his dramatic Manchester United exit.
The ex-England winger Waddle insists the five-time Ballon d’Or winner wouldn’t fit Eddie Howe’s high pressing game and the Toon should instead look for younger talent.
The former England international expects the 37-year-old star forward to “see his days” abroad in a slower and more possession-based league.
Waddle told SunSport: “I think it would be great publicity for the owners and the club. Personally no, if you want to progress as a club I don’t think they should get Ronaldo.
“Yes, sign him to the end of the season but Callum Wilson is doing ever so well. Would you leave Callum Wilson out? Ronaldo wants to play, Ronaldo’s not gonna sit on the bench. For me it’s a no no.
“I think we will see Cristiano Ronaldo going off abroad and I think that’s where he will see his days. I think he’s done with England.
“He’d have to play as a centre-forward, you couldn’t play him anywhere else at the minute. Newcastle press and they work very very hard. If you watch Newcastle, they press, they play high. That’s not Ronaldo’s game.
“So I don’t think he’d be a great fit. I’m sure he’d score goals cause he will score goals wherever he goes. He’s a great player, still a good player today. But I think he’ll end up going somewhere where it’s more possession based, slower league; I think that would suit Ronaldo.”
