    FT: Netherlands 2-2 Argentina
That’s the end of extra-time at the Lusail Stadium as the Netherlands and Argentina are set for penalties.
Nahuel Molina opened the scoring thanks to a stunning assist by Lionel Messi, who doubled the Albiceleste’s lead from the penalty spot soon after.

    Going on extra-time
Netherlands and Argentina’s thrilling World Cup quarter-finals is now on extra-time.
Here’s what SunSport’s man on the field Martin Lipton makes of Wout Weghorst’s incredible equaliser:
    Now that IS incredible.
That’s a version of the free-kick Argentina scored against England in St Etienne in 1998.
But in the 100th minute. To take it to extra-time.
Brilliant deception by one sub, completed by another.
Koopmeiners caught the entire Argentine defence off guard by rolling inside the wall but Weghorst still had so much to do.
Back in 1978, a Dutch substitute named Dick Naninga came off the bench to take it to extra-time – and was the thickness of the woodwork away from putting his side in front.
No idea what happens next…Martin LiptonSunSport
    Netherlands 2-2 Argentina
Unbelievable! The Netherlands have equalised in the final minute of stoppage time!
Argentina are absolutely stunned, Holland have levelled with an absolutely brilliant set piece.
Wout Weghorst has equalised with his second goal of the night.
And it all started with Teun Koopmeiners faking a shot from a free-kick and instead passing through to Weghorst who beat Emiliano Martinez from close distance
    Netherlands 1-2 Argentina
Netherlands get one in with Wout Weghorst after 82 minutes!
Weghorst picked up a wonderful cross by Steven Berghuis and beat Emiliano Martinez with a stunning header.
Looks like we have a match at the Lusail Stadium with seven minutes to go.
Holland are really pushing for late equaliser!

    Netherlands 0-2 Argentina
Argentina look to have sealed their place in the 2022 World Cup semi-finals.
Lionel Messi has beaten Andries Noppert from the penalty spot after Denzel Dumfries fouled Marcos Acuna.
Here’s what SunSport’s man on the field Martin Lipton has to say about it:
At least I got that one right.
Dumfries gets more than enough of Acuna to make up the Spanish referee’s mind for him and Messi clips home with utter assurance.
Another ear-splitting scream from the massed Argentine ranks.
    Watch out Croatia.
    They’re coming. He’s coming.Martin LiptonSunSport
    More from the ground
SunSport’s man on the field Martin Lipton also had this to say about the ongoing match between Argentina and the Netherlands:
That would have been the way to seal it.
Messi induces the foul by van Dijk on the edge of the box – no question about the decision – and strokes the free-kick over the wall, beyond Noppert’s groping fingers, but a whisker of paint too high.
Now, at last, van Gaal changes it up.
Big bad Luke de Jong up top, Blind off, Ake at left back in a four.
But Messi has his dander up. A second Argentine goal still appears more likely than an equaliser.Martin LiptonSunSport
    Word from the ground
Here’s what SunSport’s Martin Lipton makes of the ongoing World Cup quarter-final clash between Argentina and the Netherlands, which currently sees the Albiceleste lead 1-0:
The rhythm of the Argentine drums is not stopping. I don’t think it’ll stop all night.
You can see why. Holland may have plenty of the ball but they do not look as if they have a clue what to do with it.
Those small bunches of Dutch fans already appear resigned to their team’s fate.
Of course, it is only 1-0. One moment, one mistake….ask Brazil.
But it doesn’t feel like that is going to happen.Martin LiptonSunSport
    England vs France preview
England are set for their toughest test in the 2022 World Cup as they take on France in the quarter-finals at the Al Bayt Stadium.
Chelsea star Raheem Sterling returned to Qatar after flying home to London but doesn’t seem likely to take part in the match.
Arsenal ace Ben White left the squad for “personal reasons” with reports suggesting he fell out with manager Gareth Southgate’s assistant Steve Holland.
Newcastle’s Callum Wilson is nursing a minor strain, while West Ham’s Declan Rice missed training on Wednesday due to an illness that is unlikely to prevent him from playing.
France manager Didier Deschamps, on the other hand, is set to have star man Kylian Mbappe available following an injury scare that led him to miss training

    Netherlands 0-1 Argentina
Argentina have opened the scoring against the Netherlands with Nahuel Molina’s opener.
Molina broke the deadlock after a stunning assist by Lionel Messi on 35 minutes.
Here’s word from SunSport’s man on the field Martin Lipton:
Sorry. I thought it was loud before.
    Completely wrong.
But as that ball rolled into the Dutch net, the whole flipping roof came off.
A genuine explosion of raw joy, passion, desire.
Sheer genius by Messi, ghosting away from a blanket of orange shirts to prod through, with Molina getting the wrong side of opposite number Blind to poke past Noppert.
Now Holland have to change it up. Can they?Martin LiptonSunSport
    Word from the ground
Argentine fans had been getting a little more edgy with Holland starting to impose their game-plan on affairs, writes SunSport’s man on the field Martin Lipton.
But that little shuffle and spin by Messi got them going again, even if the shot didn’t really trouble Noppert at any point.
Clear that the Dutch think they can get in behind the Argentine full-backs.
The South Americans inside, though, are making one hell of a racket. Relentless
    Southgate on Walker vs Mbappe
England manager Gareth Southgate insists Kyle Walker and the whole team will have to be at their best when they face France and Kylian Mbappe, writes SunSport’s Charlie Wyett.
“We are talking about the opposition but they are a fantastic team.
“We are aware of the whole squad and they have been able to cope with the loss of some big players.
“Didier [Deschamps] has created a team which is stronger than the individuals which was not always the case with France in the same way it was not always the case with us. We have to be at our best”
    Kane on Lloris
England captain Harry Kane is ready to face “one of the best keepers out there” when he takes on France skipper and Tottenham team-mate Hugo Lloris, writes SunSport’s Charlie Wyett.
Kane said: “Huge is a fantastic leader. Leads by example, is quite calm in pressure situations and knows when his voice needs to be heard. I have learnt a lot from him and his leadership skills.
“We train a lot, together, play a lot together, but I am someone who always backs myself against any keeper.
“But I have seen Hugo pull off fantastic saves and hopefully tomorrow, I will have some chances I will be able to put away.
“I will have to be at the top of my game as I am facing one of the best keepers out there”

    Atmosphere at the stadium
The wall of sound from the Argentine supporters was absolutely incredible, writes SunSport’s Martin Lipton.
All it needs is the ticker-tape and we could be back in 1978.
But Holland knew this was going to be an “away” match.
Van Gaal wants the South Americans to get giddy with that fervent backing and over-commit
    Word from the ground
Louis van Gaal has first criticised, then mocked, the tiny numbers who have come from Holland to support their team, writes SunSport’s man on the field Martin Lipton
Less the famed Oranje Army. In fact, barely a platoon.
And, unsurprisingly, those few orange shirts dotted around the Lusail Iconic Stadium have been almost swept away by the tide of sky blue and white.
Buenos Aires is two and a half times further away from Doha than the “mere” 3,000 miles from Amsterdam.
But the fans from the capital, from Rosario, from Mendoza and Mal Del Plata have made the journey in their thousands.
They believe this WILL be the year when Lionel Messi proves, for once and for all, that he truly is the inheritor of Diego Maradona’s mantle of World Cup greatness.
    Kane praises Walker
Harry Kane hailed Kyle Walker as the best right-back of the last decade ahead of his duel with Kylian Mbappe, writes SunSport’s Dan King.
The England captain said: “Me and Kyle have known each other a long time.
“Kyle is a fantastic defender. He’s probably the most consistent right-back there has been for the last 10 or so years.
“He’s improved as he’s gone along in his career and I think he’s playing at the highest level he ever has.
“I know there’s a lot of talk about Kyle and Kylian, but Kyle will be focused on doing his job for the team as he always does. Whether that’s with or without the ball he will be ready.
“I’m always happy to play with him. I think he’s one of the best players there is”

    Antony’s Samba dive
Brazil and Manchester United ace Anthony has been caught attempting an outrageous dive against Croatia in the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals.
The winger was attempting to win his side a free-kick in a dangerous position when he took the embarrassing tumble.
The 22-year-old had moved the ball past Ivan Perisic but then collapsed to the ground on 74 minutes.
Fortunately, the Brazil international was not rewarded for his antics and play was waved on by referee Michael Oliver, despite the player’s protests.
Although, Antony did have some luck as he did escape punishment for what was a clear dive

Just one more half of extra-time keeps Brazil from the semi-finals
    Southgate on White
England manager Gareth Southgate insists Arsenal ace Ben White left Qatar due to “personal reasons”.
This comes after reports suggesting White had a bust-up with Southgate’s assistant Steve Holland.
“As far as I am aware the article used words like alleged so whoever wrote it did not feel strongly enough it was correct.
“Ben left for personal reasons, we made that very clear. And in this day and age it is important a situation like this is respected”

    John Stones’ picks
John Stones was asked on the Lions Den to name his dream five-a-side team, writes SunSport’s Charlie Wyett.
Surprisingly, he named Bobby Moore, Pele, Lionel Messi, Phil Foden and. . . Joe Hart.
Stones also claimed he would have been a decent Premier League striker.
He said: “I would have been a big target man. I only say that because of who I have played with, who I have played against day-in day-out.
“I am nowhere as good as them but I have learnt from them. Maybe not at the top of the Premier League but I would like to think I would be in the Prem”
    Stones on Beckham
John Stones revealed he was star-struck when David Beckham paid a surprise visit to the England camp, writes SunSport’s Charlie Wyett.
Beckham watched training at the team’s Al Wakrah Sports Club training base during the group stages
Stones said: “I have never felt like that before when they said ‘Beckham is coming to training and wants to meet you all’.
“This was at the start of the session and I kept looking over to the tunnel where he was going to come out thinking ‘is he here yet?’ We got to meet him. I was a big fan as a kid”

    Goodnight from the Lusail Stadium
It’s been an evening of pure drama that included a penalty shootout, a last gasp equaliser, some feisty flashpoints, an overzealous referee and a little bit of Lionel Messi magic.
And the upshot of all that is Argentina taking their place in another World Cup semi-final.
Lionel Scaloni’s team will face Croatia on Tuesday after finally getting the better of the Netherlands in Lusail.
Like their South American rivals before them, La Albiceleste were taken to penalties after letting a late lead slip.
But unlike Brazil, the Argentines kept their cool when it mattered.
It brings an end to another absurdly exciting day at this World Cup, and sets us up neatly for tomorrow when England take centre stage against France.
Until the big one, thanks for joining us and goodbye.
    And it was all yellow…
The final figures are in from FIFA, and it’s been recorded that referee Antonio Mateu showed 17 yellow cards this evening.
Two of those were to members of the Argentine coaching team while three were shown after the game had actually finished.
Among the eight Argentina players to be cautioned, two of those – Marcos Acuna and Gonzalo Montiel – will be suspended for the semi-final.
If you see this man turn on to your street wearing a traffic warden’s uniform, move the car!

    A date with Croatia
The majority wanted an Argentina – Brazil semi-final.
    The majority expected it.
But instead it will be Croatia that take their place in the semis, and their opponents were very nearly the Netherlands.
Yet Argentina eventually managed to win their way through on penalties, and will take their place in the final four on Tuesday evening.

Argentina v Croatia (Tuesday, 7pm, Lusail Iconic Stadium)

    Match stats from Lusail Stadium
The Netherlands clawed this game back from the jaws of defeat with their only two attempts on target, but ultimately paid the penalties.

    La Albiceleste triumph!
Lionel Messi punches the air in front of thousands of Argentina fans as many of his teammates celebrate nearby.
But elsewhere it’s going off again among a select group with Denzel Dumfries in the thick of it.
That will no doubt lead to other yellow cards from a referee so pernickety that he even showed one during the height of the shootout.
It took a long time to get going, but this quarter-final will go down as a classic that had it all.

    Lautaro Martinez scores!
And Argentina are in the semi-finals of the World Cup!
It’s a superb penalty under immense pressure from the striker, who pulls it into the top left corner while sending Andries Noppert the wrong way.
    Netherlands 3-4 Argentina

    Luuk De Jong scores!
    And levels up the shootout!
But Argentina have one more spotkick to win it…
    Netherlands 3-3 Argentina
    Enzo Fernandez misses!
The young midfielder could have won it for Argentina, but pulls his spotkick wide of the left post.
    Netherlands 2-3 Argentina
    Wout Weghorst scores!
A hat-trick of sorts for the substitute.
He sends Emi Martinez the wrong way to find the bottom corner
    Netherlands 2-3 Argentina
    Gonzalo Montiel scores!
So assured from the defender, who pushes his effort into the corner.
    Netherlands 1-3 Argentina
    Teun Koopmeiners scores!
A lovely penalty, pulled into the right corner with his left boot.
    Netherlands 1-2 Argentina
    Leandro Paredes scores!
A great penalty from the midfielder!
The thousands of Argentines behind that goal are ecstatic!
    Netherlands 0-2 Argentina
    Steven Berghuis misses!
Emi Martinez does it again! What a save!
This time he goes to his left! The Aston Villa stopper is in inspired form!
    Netherlands 0-1 Argentina

    Lionel Messi scores!
    Again! Advantage Argentina!
The main man sends Noppert the wrong way to roll it down the middle.
    Netherlands 0-1 Argentina

    Virgil van Dijk misses!
A great save by Emi Martinez, diving to his right to push away the Dutch captain’s effort.
    Netherlands 0-0 Argentina

    The coin toss
Virgil van Dijk and Lionel Messi meet in the middle, and it’s the Dutchman that wins the coin toss.
    The Netherlands will kick first.
Full time – Netherlands 2-2 Argentina
After two hours of enthralling, gruelling football, this quarter-final will be decided by a penalty shoot-out.
    Netherlands 2-2 Argentina
    120+1. Fernandez! Off the post!
The young Argentine almost wins it in stunning fashion with a long range whistler that beats Noppert, but crashes agonisingly off the frame of the goal.
    So, so close.

    Netherlands 2-2 Argentina
    120. Di Maria almost wins it with a wicked corner that swings back in!
It looks destined for the net until Noppert gets an important hand on the delivery to tip it over.
    Netherlands 2-2 Argentina
    119. It’s an end-to-end finish, and there is space opening up all over the field.
Argentina counter from a failed Netherlands break, and almost steal victory.
The ball is worked in to Lautaro Martinez, who turns sharply and lets fly with a 20-yarder that Noppert parries away.
Martin Lipton is still full of energy in extra-time:
“Holland have been playing for penalties throughout extra-time.
“But that self-confidence, almost arrogance, of the Argentine fans is a long-ago memory now.
“Yes, the drums are still a-banging.
“But it’s a very different edginess on all sides of the stadium. Nervous. Tense.”
    Netherlands 2-2 Argentina
    117. From Di Maria’s outswinging corner, Pezzella gets his head on the ball but his effort flies over the crossbar.
It’s a strong finish from the South Americans.
Where has this energy come from?
    Netherlands 2-2 Argentina
    116. Fernandez with the long range effort! Deflected and in!
No! It loops up over Noppert and ripples the roof of the net!
The Argentina supporters at the opposite end of the stadium thought it was in.
    Netherlands 2-2 Argentina
    114. A burst of energy from the fresh Di Maria, who darts past two in the box and squares for Lautaro Martinez.
A first time shot from the striker is deflected agonisingly wide!
Argentina are having a late rally.
    Netherlands 2-2 Argentina
    113. A brilliant block from Fernandez denies De Jong from getting on the end of the free-kick curled into the penalty area.
    Bodies on the line.
    Netherlands 2-2 Argentina
    112. A yellow card for Pezzella now, who brings down Gakpo with a scissor-like challenge.
Meanwhile, Angel Di Maria is on in what is Argentina’s sixth and final substitution. Lisandro Martinez makes way.

It is ALL to play for in the second half!

Mark Irwin at the Education City Stadium
SunSport’s Mark Irwin has this half-time report from the stands:
NOT exactly the football fiesta we were promised so far as sluggish Brazil have struggled to get out of first gear.
Neither keeper has been seriously tested during a cagey first 45 minutes and Croatia have looked more than comfortable keeping the crowd favourites at bay.
Neymar has been particularly disappointing, constantly giving the ball away with needless flicks and tricks and not exactly busting a gut to regain possession.
Danilo was slightly fortunate to get away with a yellow card from ref Michael Oliver when he took out Josip Juranovic with a head high challenge.
Other than that, there’s not been a great deal to get excited about but on the bright side, the second-half can only get better.Mark IrwinSunSport
HALF TIME – Croatia 0-0 Brazil
One minute of added time comes to an end with the game perfectly poised at the break.
It’s not been the most exciting of halves, but you sense the game will come to life in the second half.

    Croatia 0-0 Brazil
43, Thiago Silva remarkably keeps the ball from rolling out for a for a corner, passing it to safety under pressure from Perisic.

A nick off the wall took it it into the grateful arms of Livakovic.

33, Juranovic switches the ball towards Perisic through the corridor of uncertainty.
Alisson is forced into an unorthodox palm clear and Brazil escape.
    Croatia 0-0 Brazil
31, Brozovic is next to go into the book after a nibble at the heels of Neymar.
Brazil will no doubt target the Croatia midfielder now.
    Croatia 0-0 Brazil
    29, But to no avail.
Croatia break with purpose and Perisic cuts inside before blazing a ball over the bar.
A shot is a shot, but that was never troubling Alisson in goal.
    Croatia 0-0 Brazil
28, Brozovic plays a pass into trouble and Neymar is hacked to the turf.
Neymar clips a ball to Militao who can’t connect with it on the volley.
    But Bazil come again…
    Croatia 0-0 Brazil
25, Juranovic gets in behind Danilo who raises his foot and Michael Oliver promptly reaches for a yellow card.
Dangerous play from the full-back who might count himself lucky to not be shown red.
Modric will take the free-kick from the right hand side, and Thiago Silva nods it clear.
    Croatia 0-0 Brazil
23, Casemiro’s shot is deflected wide after a fast paced Brazil counter.
They are coming alive and Croatia must stay alert.
    Croatia 0-0 Brazil
20, Brazil turning on the style now.
Vinicius drags Juranovic one way then the other before playing a one-two with Richarlison.

It evades Perisic and falls to Juranovic who had continued his run. But he lashes at it, and Thiago Silva got his body in the way.
    Croatia 0-0 Brazil
10, Brazil finding their samba rhythm.

RAHEEM STERLING is back in training for England after returning to the UK to attend to personal matters. The winger saw his Surrey home broken into during the World Cup but is now back in Qatar training with his teammates.
Meanwhile, Ben White reportedly had a bust-up with England assistant coach Steve Holland which led to his World Cup camp exit.
The FA initially stated that White left the England camp ahead of their last-16 clash with Senegal for “personal reasons”.
But reports have also claimed that the Gunners full-back became unhappy in the camp and struggled to mix with his fellow teammates.

    Kane is ‘clinical’, says Giroud
Ex-Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has said he sees similarities between himself and Harry Kane ahead if England v France on Saturday.
The Frenchman had his say on his opposite number with the World Cup Quarter-Final clash approaching quickly.
Giroud said: “I’ve spoken to Hugo Lloris about Harry Kane because he has a profile that can maybe be compared to mine.
“He’s very powerful and over the last few years he’s moved further down the pitch to be more involved in the game.
“He’s also very good at assists and a good finisher that’s clinical. He’s generous with his team mates and has the ability to hurt opponents.
“He’s obviously a great asset to the English team. There’s similarities between us but differences too.”
    Croatia 0-0 Brazil
A few minutes in to this afternoon’s big clash.
There is a typically cagey feel to the game in the opening couple of minutes.
Casemiro is the first to commit, and the first to concede a foul against Kovacic.

    Going for gold with Silvestre
Former Manchester United and Arsenal star Mikael Silvestre has picked his combined England-France XI.
And there are no less than FIVE of Gareth Southgate’s men in the side – including one who is unlikely to start against the world champs on Saturday.
Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe face off in a striker showdown tomorrow for a place in the World Cup semis.
There are sure to be thrilling battles all over the pitch as a host of star names look to make an impact.
And it has opened the door for fans to choose some brilliant combined team XIs, with both countries spoiled for choice in terms of talent.
One man who knows a thing or two about England AND France is Silvestre.

    Llor-is up for the fight
Hugo Lloris has been playing in the Premier League for so long that he probably qualifies as an honorary Englishman.
But tonight the Spurs goalkeeper will be belting out The Marsellaise as loud as any Frenchman as he looks to keep his grip on the World Cup he lifted four years ago.
And if that means breaking the heart of his good friend Harry Kane, well that’s a price he will be more than willing to pay.
Three weeks short of his 36th birthday, Lloris will become his country’s most capped player when he makes his 143rd appearance for Les Bleus this evening.
But that will mean nothing to him if it ends in defeat by the nation he has come to regard as home after ten years in North London.

Saka needs to ‘cheat’ like Mess, says Lallana
Adam Lallana believes Arsenal attacker Saka has just as an important role to play and he believes he can be utilised properly being allowed to “cheat” like Argentinean legend Messi.
Writing in The Times, the ex-England ace said: “If it appears as though he [Messi] is not doing anything and leaving everything to his team-mates, then that ignores the fact he is constantly looking, scanning and taking pictures of the pitch in his head.
“Then, when he does get the ball back, Messi is fresher than anyone else and capable of weaving his magic. He may walk the most, but he is also taking in the most information. He could well be the cleverest player who has ever played the game.
“Yet when people mention it, the implication tends to be that he is cutting corners with his team, whether that is Argentina or at club level with Paris Saint-Germain.
“You often hear people say, ‘This player cheats out of possession. He doesn’t defend properly.’”
The 34-year-old continued: “There has been so much focus on how to stop Kylian Mbappe, but England do not want Saka doubling up with right back Kyle Walker every time the French attacker gets the ball.
“If he does that, then Saka is going to be too deep and he is not going to be as effective on counterattacks, which is one of his great strengths.
Vinicius Jr has faith in Casemiro to stop Luka Modric
Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr has revealed Brazil’s plan to stop Luka Modric in the quarter-final of the World Cup.
The pair face off for their countries in Qatar at 3pm UK time, and both will be hoping to make it to the semi-finals with victory.
Vinicius Jr has revealed that he has faith in his former teammate Casemiro in stopping Modric.

“Playing against Modric is going to be very special,” he told FIFA.
“As far as neutralising him goes, I’ll leave that to Casemiro because he can do a better job than me!
“He knows Modric really well because they played together for a long time.”
    Ozil jumps to Ronaldo’s defence
Former Arsenal star Mesut Ozil has taken to Twitter to defend Cristiano Ronaldo after recent criticism.
The pair held a strong relationship during their time together at Real Madrid, and Ronaldo was benched against Switzerland in the last-16.
Fernando Santos saw his decision pay off, with Portugal coming out 6-1 victors and Ronaldo featuring from the bench.

Speaking on Twitter, Ozil weighed in on the recent media criticism of Ronaldo as he said: “I really don’t get where this constant negativity from the press about Cristiano comes from…
“The media is just trying to get clicks, and pundits who don’t have a career anymore just want to get attention with his big name and try to make him look bad.
“He is soon 38 years old – so what’s the surprise that he doesn’t score 50 goals a season anymore? Every football fan out there should be happy to have seen him playing world class football for 20 years.”
Brazil look to samba their way to the semi-final
Tite’s side are the favourites for the World Cup but face a tough challenge when they come up against Croatia today.
The South Americans have enjoyed their World Cup so far, but been criticised by Roy Keane for their dancing celebrations.
Despite this, don’t expect this to change, with the Brazilians ready to pull out more iconic celebrations if they can find the back of the net against Croatia.

    Raheem Sterling returns
England winger Raheem Sterling has returned to Qatar and been pictured back in training.
The 28-year-old left the squad before they faced Senegal to attend to personal matters back in England.
This comes after his family home in Surrey was broken into by burglars, with it unclear as to whether he was going to return to Qatar.
However, the Chelsea forward is now back with his England teammates as they seek World Cup glory ahead of their quarter-final clash against France on Saturday.

    Croatia hopeful of semi-final place
Luka Modric and co will be hoping to qualify for the semi-finals of the World Cup today.
The Croatians play Brazil today, who are the favourites to lift the trophy, so will be up against it.
But victory today will set-up a semi-final clash against the winner of Netherlands and Argentina’s match later tonight.
Could they repeat 2018 and make another final? Time will tell.
    Deschamps supports Southgate
Didier Deschamps insists Gareth Southgate does not get the credit he deserves for turning into a World Cup fighting force.
French boss Deschamps, one of only three men to win the World Cup as a player and a coach, has nothing but admiration for the job Southgate has done as Three Lions manager for the past six years.
But he does not believe that is the case in England ahead of this evening’s quarter-final blockbuster in Qatar.
He says: “I like Gareth very much. We have met on a number of occasions and have talked about a number of things.
“But if I understand the situation correctly, not everyone appreciates him so much in his own country.
“That isn’t because he wasn’t a good footballer himself because he had a long and distinguished playing career.
“But he is also a very good coach who has enabled England to get some very good results in the recent tournaments.”
England won’t sit back on the ropes, says Southgate
When asked by ITV whether Southgate wants the attacking approach of his team to remain, he said: “Yeah without a doubt.
“There is no point going into a game like this and just covering up and sitting on the ropes. We believe we can cause problems with the ball and we intend to do that.
“We’ve beaten some big teams. We know we have the experience of high pressure nights behind us and as a team we’ve been resilient through a lot of situations but they all prepare you for nights like this.
“We got to the first final for 55 years, this is a quarterfinal. We’ve won a semi-final and been to a semi-final of the World Cup before.
“But, of course, it is a big game against a high quality opponent. Everything that has happened in the past is history, it all comes down to Saturday night.
“What they have been through and what they’ve learnt and the way we have gone about things in this tournament.
“They’ve understood what we have been trying to do, they’ve kept calm and shown belief in what they’ve been asked to do and shown a great mentality about the way they’ve played.
    Southgate hints at England change
England manager Gareth Southgate has hinted at playing an attacking team against France.
The Three Lions take on the reigning world champions in the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Qatar on Saturday.
here has been much talk about whether Southgate will stick with the 4-3-3 he has fielded for every game at the tournament or if he will revert to the back five he played against Germany and Italy at last year’s Euros.
But the England head coach is adamant he wants his side to go at the holders in their pursuit of a place in the last four.
Saka must avoid defensive effort like Messi
A former England star says Bukayo Saka must “cheat” like Lionel Messi in order for the Three Lions to beat France.
Gareth Southgate’s side take on Les Bleus in the World Cup quarter-final on Saturday.
Much of the talk before the bumper showdown has been on how Kyle Walker will nullify the threat from French talisman Kylian Mbappe.
However, Adam Lallana believes Arsenal attacker Saka has just as an important role to play and he believes he can be utilised properly being allowed to “cheat” like Argentinean legend Messi.
Keane doubles down on dance debate
Roy Keane has reignited his war of words with Brazil boss Tite by telling him to save his dancing for the nighclub.
The Samba Boys put on a blistering display on Monday as they cruised into the World Cup quarter-finals with a 4-1 win over South Korea.
Keane has spoken about the dancing antics again while talking to Sky Bet, saying: “I love watching Brazil and what they stand for.
“I don’t get how a manager can dance when the game is still going ahead, he’s got an opposition manager 10 yards away from him, you’ve got to watch that.
“The game is about respect. Dance afterwards in the dressing room, or in the nightclub, that’s not a problem.

“But why is it okay for Brazil to do it during the game? If everyone has a dance after a goal, the games will be going on for three days.
“Do you know what they should start doing, when coaches do their pro licence, show the managers how to do a little dance on the sideline, forget tactics.”
Tite will be hoping that he has his dancing shoes on again this afternoon when Brazil face Croatia in the World Cup quarter-final.
More on the reasons behind White dismissal
The trouble with White allegedly boiled to a head when the star arrived for a team meeting before the bore draw with USA not knowing vital statistics relating to his own performances in training.
The experienced coach is also believed to have felt let down by the versatile defender’s lack of knowledge on their strengths of their upcoming American opponents.
A mutual decision was then agreed that White would be released from his first-ever World Cup and allowed to return back to the Gunners.
White was an unused sub in the first two games, and was not in the squad for the 3-0 win over Wales on Tuesday.
    White ‘struggled to integrate’
The 25-year-old did not play in any of England’s three games at the World Cup.
Now the Daily Star are claiming that White’s exit was down to a supposed fall-out with a key member of the coaching staff.
And they also state the ex-Brighton ace was struggling to fully integrate into the squad off the pitch.
White – who revealed before the tournament that he didn’t watch football while growing up and still doesn’t today – and Holland reportedly got into an argument in front of the rest of the squad after mounting tensions.
White bust up with England coach, say reports
Ben White reportedly left England’s World Cup squad due to an alleged fall-out with Gareth Southgate’s assistant Steve Holland.
The Three Lions announced on November 30 that the Arsenal defender was leaving the camp in the Qatar due to personal reasons.
    Good morning football fans
It was announced that Chelsea star Raheem Sterling would return to England’s World Cup base in Qatar on Thursday.
Sterling has been expected to rejoin the squad ahead of Saturday’s quarter-final against France.
The forward flew back to the UK due to a burglary at his home in Surrey.
But the 28-year-old is now expected to link back up with Gareth Southgate’s squad for this weekend’s crunch clash.
However, it is unlikely the ex-Manchester City star will play against Didier Deschamps’ reigning world champions.
Meanwhile, Luis Enrique has departed from his position as Spain manager after the shock 2022 World Cup exit to Morocco.
The Furia Roja were stunned by the Atlas Lions in a penalty shootout defeat earlier this week.
It means the Spaniards have failed to make it past the Last-16 since winning the World Cup in 2010.
And Spain announced Under-21 boss Luis de la Fuente as their new manager – just hours after Enrique’s departure.
The board of directors is expected to rubber stamp De la Fuente’s appointment in a meeting on Monday.
The 61-year-old’s first two games in charge will come against Norway and Scotland in March as the Furia Roja bid to qualify for Euro 2024.
The Spanish tactician has been in the national set-up since 2013 and led both Spain’s Under-19s and Uner-21s teams to Euros glory.
Finally, Cristiano Ronaldo reportedly threatened to quit Portugal’s World Cup squad after finding out he would be benched in the Last-16 clash against Switzerland.
That is according to Record, but the Portuguese FA have categorically denied that report.
Ronaldo, who is a free agent after leaving Manchester United following his explosive interview, has shared a statement of his own.
Sharing a snap of the squad, including himself as a sub, celebrating a goal from Tuesday, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner wrote: “A group too close to be broken by outside forces. A nation too brave to let itself be frightened by any adversary.
“A team in the truest sense of the word, which will fight for the dream until the end! Believe with us! Strength, Portugal!”
    Three’s the dream
Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham will seal a transfer to Manchester City over any of their rivals, according to Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand.
Speaking on FIVE, he said: “Pep Guardiola’s signed a new deal, if they don’t win the Champions League this year, he goes there with a mindset, ‘I am going to be the man that brings you the Champions League.’
“That’s how I think he’s moving, that’s how I think he rolls. I think he will [go to City], I think he’ll say he’s got a couple of mates there, England boys, ‘I can go to [Real] Madrid in five years’.
“I think he thinks, ‘listen man, I’m a superstar, I want to go win the league and the Premier League because I’m an English-born boy and then I’ll go Madrid and do the same there in a couple of years’.
“The mad thing is he’s got the chance, the great thing is he has the absolute choice and pick of what he does. There will be clubs queuing up”

    Patrice Evra warning
Despite Patrice Evra’s confidence in France’s ability to beat England, he warned Les Bleus against underestimating Gareth Southgate’s men.
Evra said: “With England, the star is the team. It’s not just one player.
“This is the best English side, as a team, not as a group of individuals. England look more of a unit than France.
“But [Jude] Bellingham will be by far the best midfielder England have ever had.
“What a joy it is to see him play. He is a complete player. It’s scary he’s only 19”
    Patrice Evra prediction
Patrice Evra reckons both England and France are capable of lifting the World Cup next Sunday if they both get past their “biggest test of the tournament”.
But the 41-year-old reckons his national team could embarrass the Three Lions on the biggest stage.
Evra told Betfair: “I am confident, but not arrogant. I’m happy with what France are doing. It’s a big mix. I feel like France are going to smash England.
“France will face an angry, strong team. If they play with the attitude that they are stronger and more confident than England, France can smash them.
“Playing against England is always special as a French player. It’s always an amazing game. It’s a nice rivalry, it’s not bitter. We’re jealous of each other in a nice way”
    Maguire vs Mbappe
England aces John Stones and Harry Maguire will find it nearly impossible to deal with France superstar Kylian Mbappe, according to Patrice Evra.
Evra said: “[Kyle] Walker is going to block Mbappe, he did it against Neymar very well in the Champions League for Manchester City.
“He can be confident and say he’s got him because he’s fast and strong, but Mbappe will find a way to escape. He will move into the centre.
“I hope he does because Stones and Maguire won’t be able to deal with him. It will be difficult for them to stop him.
“To stop Mbappe when he’s in the centre, you have to be close to him every time, frustrate him, foul him – he doesn’t like to be fouled.
“Maguire and Stones will love playing against [Olivier] Giroud though, he’s not fast, he’s strong and that is the jackpot for them”
    Rashford’s top Marcs
Manchester United star Marcus Rashford is the latest England international to take on the gauntlet that is Bukayo Saka’s “spelling school.”
A host of other Three Lions aces including Jack Grealish, James Maddison and Declan Rice have all tried and failed to pass Saka’s tricky spelling bees.
After realising he was being filmed Rashford burst into giggles, as the winger revealed his word was “embarrassed.”
After a moment’s thought the forward gave it his best shot, and was so close to becoming the first person to pass Saka’s spelling test.
However, Rashford went with only one r, when of course he needed two.
To signal Rashford’s wrong answer, Saka made an attempt at a Britain’s Got Talent type of buzzer before bursting out into laughter and yelling : “You’re wrong”
England World Cup ace Marcus Rashford takes Bukayo Saka’s spelling test, but does he do better than Grealish and Co?
    Ring the Bell
Liverpool are set for a boost as Jude Bellingham is reportedly ready to tell Borussia Dortmund he wants to quit the club and switch to Merseyside.
According to a recent report by SPORT BLID, Bellingham is set to tell Dortmund that he wants to quit the club in order to facilitate a move after the 2022 World Cup.
The midfielder’s father Mark, mother Denise and adviser Mark Bennett are the main negotiators representing him.
It is believed that they have a “strong desire” for the England international to move to Liverpool

    Gunners give French lessons
Throughout the 90 minutes today, Arsenal looked capable of scoring every time they came forward against Lyon.
Martin Odegaard was controlling things from the centre of midfield but the performances of Reiss Nelson and Fabio Viera stood out.
Viera managed to get on the scoresheet in the process.
Nketiah did well up top, linking play well and also getting a goal and an assist as he teed up Viera for his wonderstrike.
Gabriel always looked a danger at set pieces and on another day, could have had a hat trick of headers.
Arteta may have some words to say to his players who had the minerals to try a panenka but apart from that this was a good day at the office.
The Gunners will face AC Milan in their next Dubai Super Cup match.
    Hein shows Arteta his potential
Quite a few Arsenal players put in good performances this evening but one who will be particularly pleased with his evening is goalkeeper Karl Hein.
The Estonian keeper kept a clean sheet in normal time and commanded his box well at set pieces, often coming to claim corners through a sea of players.
He then stood up to the plate in penalties saving four of Lyon’s spot kicks.
The 20-year-old keeper is certainly one for the future.

    Quirky Dubai Super Cup begins
So Arsenal win the game and the penalty shootout.
Just to give you more insight, this quirky competition will stage a penalty shootout after every game.
This is how the competition works:

A win is worth three points
A draw will see each team earn two points
A penalty shootout will be held after every match, with the winning team earning an extra point

The team with the most points from their two matches will win the competition.
    Arsenal 2-1 Lyon (PENS)
Arsenal win this random penalty shootout as they did the game itself.
Nice gesture by both teams to give the fans more entertainment value.
    Arsenal 2-1 Lyon (PENS)
Rayan Cherki steps up and also tries a panenka.
The keeper stands there and saves it making Cherki look rather silly.
    Arsenal 2-1 Lyon (PENS)
Walters steps up and skies his penalty into orbit.
    Arsenal 2-1 Lyon (PENS)
Barcola steps up and sees his effort saved by Hein.

Cozier-Duberry sees his effort saved by the Lyon keeper in the bottom corner.
    Arsenal 2-1 Lyon (PENS)
Tete’s effort is brilliantly saved by Hein.
    Arsenal 2-1 Lyon (PENS)
Cirjan steps up and tries to panenka it but looks silly as the keeper just stands there and catches it.
    Arsenal 2-1 Lyon (PENS)
Thiago Mendes puts it in the bottom corner with Hein going the other way.
    Arsenal 2-0 Lyon (PENS)
Matt Smith rolls the ball into the bottom corner, again sending the keeper the wrong way.
    Arsenal 1-0 Lyon (PENS)
Reine-Adelaide’s penalty is saved by Hein, diving to his bottom right hand corner.
    Arsenal 1-0 Lyon (PENS)
Marquinhos strokes the ball into the bottom corner sending the keeper the wrong way.
    FT: Arsenal 3-0 Lyon
There are plenty of Arsenal shirts in the sparse crowd.
Not sure what is going on now, we seem to be having a penalty shootout.
    This is bizarre.
    FT: Arsenal 3-0 Lyon
The referee brings the game to a close.
Goals from Gabriel, Nketiah and Viera seal a comfortable win.
Mikel Arteta will be hoping to see more of the same from his squad when they return to league action later in the month.
    Arsenal 3-0 Lyon
    90. There is nothing really from this game to cause concern for Arteta.
It has been a solid performance in all areas of the pitch from Arsenal.
Given the players still missing, the Spaniard will be pleased.
One minute of added time to be played.
    Arsenal 3-0 Lyon
    88. Arsenal will look to manage this game now.
They don’t want to gift away this clean sheet in the closing stages.
Hein has played well today and deserves to top it off with a shutout.
That was a very American term, apologies, blame the World Cup.
    Arsenal 3-0 Lyon
    86. Lyon break down the left with Cherki.
He fizzes a ball across the six yard box and it is guided behind for a corner.
Hein comes to collect impressively again.

    Arsenal 3-0 Lyon
    84. Credit where it is due to the youngsters who have come on.
They have tried to continue where the first string left off.
Utilising the wide areas to stretch the Lyon defensive lines.
    Arsenal 3-0 Lyon
    82. Lyon come forward once again, desperate to find at least a consolation goal.
Since the nine changes, they seem to be getting more joy.
Cherki tries his luck again from a tight angle but Hein is equal to it.
    Arsenal 3-0 Lyon
    80. Arsenal work a good ball in from the left.
So inviting for someone to stroke it home but Lyon are first to it and walk the ball out.
Arsenal rattle the post again but the follow up is well saved by Bonnevie at the expense of a corner.
    Arsenal 3-0 Lyon
    78. We are now into the final quarter of the game.
The Gunners would probably take this scoreline now.
Three goals and a clean sheet seems like a good day in the office.
    Credit: AFP
    Arsenal 3-0 Lyon
    76. Both sides take a drinks break.
Debatable if those nine Arsenal subs have even had time to break a sweat yet let alone needing extra fluids.
Bonnevie comes on goal for Lyon for the remainder of the game.
    Arsenal 3-0 Lyon
    74. The ball is worked out towards the Lyon left flank.
Cherki picks it up and cuts inside to shoot.
His effort was heading into the bottom corner until Hein managed to tip it around the post for a corner.

    ten Hag gives honest appraisal
Speaking with MUTV after the game, the Man Utd manager spoke about the game in general.
‘More negatives than positives’ was the real take-away point from the interview.
No doubt he will be looking to have side looking a lot sharper than today where they were 2-0 down within the first 18 minutes.
Sadly we did not get the real burning question answered, who was this playing with his lips on the bench?

Real test ahead for the weekend
Erik ten Hag will take his squad into what was thought to be the tougher of the two games of their mini-tour of Spain.
Real Betis currently sit sixth in La Liga, on the same points as the two teams above them with only goal difference separating the trio.
They will certainly offer a tough game for this United squad which, due to the World Cup in Qatar, is a very experimental side.
Pirates lay to siege to United
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
That may well be the first words out of the mouth of Sergio González Soriano when he hooks up with his mates for his night out.
The Pirates have had a confidence boosting win to take into their La Liga campaign.

    FT: Cadiz 4-2 Man Utd
Well, we have seen some things that are positive today.
We have also seen a manager in blue denim jeans on the touchline which is a first for me.
And poor Charlie Savage will have to go through that fourth goal again and again no doubt as Robbie tells him what he should have done.
    FT: Cadiz 4-2 Man Utd
The referee brings this friendly to a close.
Plenty of goals for the neutral, plenty of reasons for a few drinks tonight for the Cadiz manager.
ten Hag hates friendlies even more now.
    Cadiz 4-2 Man Utd
    90. Sam Murray does well out on the left.
He flights the ball into the box but Gil collects well.
We are into the final few seconds of the game now.
Two additional minutes will be added.
    Cadiz 4-2 Man Utd
    88. Cadiz are passing the ball around well.
Making the United youngsters put in a real shift.
The hosts seem happy to hold onto their win now.
    Cadiz 4-2 Man Utd
    86. United are trying to press forward.
Holding onto the ball still seems to be an issue.

    Cadiz 4-2 Man Utd
    84. Despite this only being a friendly, Cadiz can take a lot from this into their battle to stay in La Liga.
The balanced Spanish side have troubled United since that early goal.
Savage is shoved in the back and wins a free kick.
    Cadiz 4-2 Man Utd
    82. Sergio Gonzalez will be happy with what he has seen here tonight from his Cadiz team.
He will enjoy his night out more after this win.
Messages ping in to his phone from friends asking why he is so late arriving at the pub.
    Simple reply, leaving work soon.
    Cadiz 4-2 Man Utd
    80. It does go to show you something this game, Cadiz only had one player go to the World Cup.
As a result they look a far more settled side.
This is something we could see in the Premier League, with sides dominating who have had less involvement in Qatar.
    Cadiz 4-2 Man Utd
    78. Look away Robbie Savage.
Son Charlie misplaces a pass, gifting the ball to Cadiz and they capitalise.
Good weighted pass into Tomás Alarcón and he smashes the ball passed Dubravka.

    Goal – Tomás Alarcón (Cadiz)
    Cadiz 3-2 Man Utd
    76. We have a break in play as Shola Shoretire receives treatment.
He looks okay to continue after getting a knock to the head.
    Play resumes.
    Cadiz 3-2 Man Utd
    74. Since the pep talk from the manager, United have come to life more in an attacking sense.
Garcia comes on for Genar Fornes replaces him.
We almost into the last quarter of the game now.
    Cadiz 3-2 Man Utd
    72. Garcia is able to continue albeit walking a little gingerly.
United have a free kick in a dangerous position.
Isak Hansen whips the ball in but cannot find a teammate and it goes it harmlessly for a goal kick.
    Cadiz 3-2 Man Utd
    70. We have a short break as the Cadiz centre back has some treatment.
It give ten Hag a chance to get some messages to his players.
And for them to take some fluids on board.
    Cadiz 3-2 Man Utd
    68. We have to remember this run out is all about getting back to where they were before the break.
You can train all you want and play in-house friendlies between your sides but it is no substitute for real game time.
ten Hag will learn far more about his players from this.
    Credit: Getty
    Cadiz 3-2 Man Utd
    66. United started the second half like a firework, pinning Cadiz back with wave after wave of attack.
At the moment it is looking like a spent Catherine wheel still spinning around empty of flare.
All a good learning curve for the young side.
    Cadiz 3-2 Man Utd
    64. Sobrino is causing problems for United in defence.
He is making runs into the channels and dragging players out of position.
United cannot hold onto the ball for more than two of three passes at the moment.
Perez crosses and Sobrino tries to glance his header in at the near post but it goes harmlessly over the bar.
    Cadiz 3-2 Man Utd
    62. This will be a good test for these United youngsters.
Cadiz have a lot of their starting line-up playing this second half.
They need to try and focus on keeping possession for a bit.
    Cadiz 3-2 Man Utd
    60. The fans are really getting their money’s worth with the goals today.
You can often be forgiven for expecting these friendlies to play out like a Tommy Fury exhibition boxing match.
Luckily for us, both teams are landing punches in this one.
    Cadiz 3-2 Man Utd
    58. The ball is drilled into the back post from the right flank.
Sabrino is unmarked on the back post as he volleys it home.
United appeal for offside but the replay shows it was a perfectly timed run by the Cadiz striker.

    Cadiz 2-2 Man Utd
