    Three is a crowd
Only two countries have retained the World Cup since the tournament first began in 1930.
Italy retained the trophy way back in 1938 and Brazil did the same in 1962.
So no country has reclaimed their prize in over 60 years which is incredible.
France will be itching to break that long spell but they have to get past a stubborn Moroccan side first.
    SunSport’s big match prediciton
Will it be the surprise package Morocco?
Will it be the reigning champs France?
    SunSport have made their predicition…

    France vs Morocco – head-to-head
France boss the head-to-head record 7-3 with one draw.
That solo Morocco victory came in their first meeting way back in April 1963.
The 2-2 draw in November 2007 ended a run of five straight French victories – Samir Nasri was on the scoresheet in Paris as Marouane Chamakh led the line for the away side.
World Cup final referee – latest
Anthony Taylor will discover on Friday if he is to become the fourth Englishman to referee a World Cup Final.
Altrincham’s Taylor is one of the remaining contenders for the most prestigious appointment in world football.
That was after he was one of the 12 officials to stay in Qatar for the final stages of the tournament.
And with refs’ chief Pierluigi Collina a big fan of Taylor’s man and game-management skills, the 44-year-old is thought to be a genuine contender for the job.
Taylor has not been involved in a knock-out match at the tournament.

Why is N’Golo Kante not playing for France?
The Chelsea star been sidelined for four months due to a hamstring injury suffered during a 2-2 draw with Tottenham in August.
The injury has meant Kante will miss the opportunity to help France to become only the third side to retain the World Cup.
Providing all goes will with the 31-year-olds recovery, it looks likely we will see him return to action soon after the season proceeds.

    France’s stars of the show
So far, Mbappe and Giroud are the men who have contributed to most of Les Bleus’ goals.
But Antoine Griezmann’s underlying stats suggests he’s on the most important players in the side too.

Who will be the star men?
Kylian Mbappe is the major threat for France – but as England found out, it is dangerous to give too much space to Antoine Griezmann, Aurelien Tchouameni or Giroud as they can all cause problems.
Adrien Rabiot and Ousmane Dembele are also performing well – Morocco’s defence will need to be water tight again.
Achraf Hakimi and Hakim Ziyech are the standout names for the Atlas Lions but Sofyan Amrabat is enjoying a superb tournament while Youssef En-Nesyri continues to hurt opponents up front.

    What is the team news?
Didier Deschamps could be forced into two changes after an illness bug swept round the France camp.
Both central defender Dayot Upamecano and midfielder Adrien Rabiot were unable to train yesterday and are thought to be serious doubts.
And that results in Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate and Youssef Fofana being on standby.
As for Morocco, Regragui has some important calls to make at the back.
Romain Saiss went off on a stretcher against Portugal then Walid Cheddira got himself red carded so they will both be out.
Defenders Noussair Mazraoui and Nayef Aguerd missed the quarter-final but may be fit again now – although replacements Yahia Attiyat Allah and Jawad El Yamiq both shone.

    How did they get here?
France beat Australia 4-1 and then Denmark 2-1 to book their place in the knockout rounds before their 1-0 defeat to Tunisia.
A 3-1 win in the last 16 was enough to see off Poland before the holders came up against England but Olivier Giroud’s header followed by Kane’s penalty miss saw France edge through.
Morocco started off with a 0-0 draw against fellow semi-finalists Croatia then beat Belgium 2-0 and Canada 2-1 to top Group F.
They then drew 0-0 with Spain in the last 16 and won the shootout 3-0 before a 1-0 victory to end Portugal’s campaign and become the first African team to reach a World Cup semi-final.
    Welcome to France vs Morocco!
Hello and welcome to SunSport’s live coverage of France vs Morocco in the World Cup!
That’s right, we’re days away from the final now and Morocco are STILL in the tournament.
They face a historic semi-final clash with reigning world champions Les Bleus, who beat England in the quarters.
France have been clinical so far in Qatar, winning their games with poise and ruthlessness, but Morocco are planning to upset the applecart.
The African nation topped a group which contained Belgium, Croatia and Canada.
And then they knocked out Spain on penalties in the last-16 before dispatching of Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal in the quarter-finals.
One big battle that fans are looking forward to witnessing is Kylian Mbappe’s clash with PSG team-mate Achraf Hakimi.
Hakimi scored the winning penalty in the shootout against Spain and will be tasked with trying to spot his pal tonight.
Mbappe, however, is joint-top scorer, alongside Lionel Messi, at the World Cup, and he’ll be out to pull clear tonight.
So kick back and enjoy all of the action, we’ve got you covered here at SunSport HQ.

Messi still not in Piers’ top three greatest ever
Piers Morgan has named Lionel Messi as the FOURTH greatest footballer of all-time.
Messi, 35, reached his second World Cup final in sensational style on Tuesday night as he scored and assisted in Argentina’s 3-0 victory over Croatia.
Yet despite Messi’s influencial displays in Qatar, Morgan still believes Cristiano Ronaldo is the greatest player of all time.

The SunSport columnist did begin by acknowledging Messi and Argentina for reaching the final.
Speaking on Twitter, he said: “Congratulations to Argentina & Lionel Messi on reaching the World Cup final. Never doubted them.”
But England legend Gary Lineker, who has always maintained Messi is the best ever, then asked Morgan: “Is there still a debate? Asking for a goat.”
To which he replied: “There isn’t. It’s Ronaldo.”
Soccer Saturday presenter Jeff Stelling then pressed him on his take, saying: “So where are we now @piersmorgan in the Ronaldo v Messi debate?”
And Morgan responded by insisting Messi doesn’t even break into his top three, ranking both Diego Maradona and even Brazilian Ronaldo ahead of him too.
He said: “I think Cristiano Ronaldo’s the best ever, Maradona 2nd, Messi 3rd (possibly 4th actually, behind R9 [Brazilian Ronaldo]).”
    Conspiracy theory over Argentina penalties
FANS have launched a wild theory that the World Cup is “rigged” after Argentina were awarded their FOURTH penalty of the tournament.
Lionel Messi stepped up to dispatch their spot kick against Croatia, setting his side on the way to a 3-0 victory.
The 35-year-old produced a brilliant performance, bamboozling Josko Gvardiol before setting up his side’s third.
But some fans online have cried foul play, citing the number of penalties that Argentina have been awarded during the tournament.
The Albiceleste have had four spot kicks in Qatar, three of which have been scored by Messi.
And as conspiracy theories hit Twitter, one fan stated incorrectly: “This has to be the most rigged world cup ever. Argentina has got 5 penalties.”
While a second added: “How was that a penalty. This world cup is definitely rigged.”
Another conspiracy theorist wrote: “The whole World Cup is rigged for Messi to win it. Funny that some people still don’t believe it.”
Utd ‘make crazy offer to Benzema’
Manchester United are prepared to pay Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema a “crazy salary”.
That’s the claim from Spanish publication Nacional – with PSG also linked to the France legend.
Benzema, 34, won the Ballon d’Or winner in October but has missed the World Cup so far due to injury.
And he’s out of contract in the summer.
France hit by illness on semi-final eve
Illness has swept through the France World Cup camp on the eve of their semi-final.
The reigning champions face Morocco at the Al Bayt Stadium on Wednesday evening.
But their preparations have been hit with a major blow with a bug spreading within the squad.
Dayot Upamecano and Adrien Rabiot were both forced to sit out of training today.
And they are said to be serious doubts for the clash with Morocco.
Upamecano has a sore throat while Rabiot is also under the weather.
It means Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konate and Youssef Fofana are on standby in case the first-choice duo cannot recover in time.
Konate and Fofana were drafted in against Tunisia while William Saliba, Matteo Guendouzi, Eduardo Camavinga and Jordan Veretout are alternative options for Deschamps.
    Lloris: Texting Kane ‘not easy’
Hugo Lloris admits it “was not easy” finding the right words when he texted Tottenham team-mate Harry Kane after his World Cup quarter-final penalty woe.
Kane fired one spot-kick leveller but missed a second one late on as France won 2-1.
French keeper Lloris said: “It’s a difficult time for the England national team and Harry.
“We had a text after the game. It was not easy to find the words. He needed some time to rest.
“I think he can be proud of what he has done for the national team.
“In football history, many top players have missed penalties in their career – Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo.
“But I have no doubt Harry will keep his chin up and help Tottenham and the national team to shine.”
Morocco hand out 13,000 free tickets
The Moroccan Football Federation has announced it will give 13,000 free tickets to fans for Wednesday’s World Cup semi-final against France.
Morocco have been the surprise package of the winter tournament.
They topped a group consisting of 2018 finalists Croatia, Belgium’s golden generation an an impressive Canadian side.
One-time World Cup winners, Spain, were then put to the sword in the round of 16 on penalties.
And a 1-0 win over Portugal in the quarters made Morocco the first African country to reach the last four.

Morocco boast an impressive defensive record, and are yet to concede a goal at the hands of an opposition player.
They have conceded just one goal at this year’s edition of the World Cup, and it was an own goal by Nayef Aguerd.
The West Ham defender steered the ball into the back of his own net against Canada in the group stages.
They will now square off with current world champions, France, on Wednesday for a spot in Sundays final, where Argentina await.
And according to the BBC, Morocco’s Football Federation has announced it will give 13,000 free tickets to fans to roar the team on.
    Howe about Eddie next?
JACK WILSHERE EXCLUSIVE: If Gareth Southgate does leave the England job, I’d love the FA to try and get Eddie Howe.
I know how good Eddie is from my time at Bournemouth but people wondered whether he could make that step up to a bigger club.
Well, now he has shown at Newcastle how skilled he is at developing players and he’s turning them into title challengers.

The problem for the FA would be persuading him to swap his club for his country — and I’m not sure they’ll be able to do that.
But the England job is the pinnacle for any English coach and it might be hard to turn down if there is a proper offer on the table.
Eddie is so thorough in everything he does — from the way he organises the season, to his well-thought-out training sessions, to the one-to-one attention he gives players.
He’s a top man-manager. I’d only had Arsene Wenger as a club boss before I went to Bournemouth and he was a great man-manager, too — but in a different way to Eddie.
Arsene would give you a lot of trust and confidence and left you to get on with it.  Eddie was more detailed, probably because the level of player he had was not as good as Arsenal’s.
Eddie had to coach more. Arsene didn’t really have to tell Samir Nasri or Tomas Rosicky how to play between the lines. Eddie would tell you how to do it and give you feedback — not always positive — but the way he did it made you really want to play for him.
I couldn’t recommend him highly enough.
I don’t believe we must have an English boss but he needs to understand the English game.”
    JACK’S FULL VERDICT
    England ace Maguire ‘will move’
Harry Maguire is certain to leave Manchester United this summer – but isn’t good enough for Arsenal.
That’s the verdict of Scotland legend Ally McCoist, despite the England centre-back’s impressive World Cup.
United boss Erik ten Hag has warned Maguire he must match his form in Qatar or he’ll stay on the fringes at club level.
And McCoist told talkSPORT: “I don’t think he may move, I’ll go one further – I think he will move.
“Clearly he will want to play. Straight away off the top of my head, I’d say he’s good enough for Spurs.
“Arsenal? Maybe not at this moment in time.”
Only one thing Messi can’t do…
Lionel Messi is so good he has even left Roy Keane gushing, writes JACK FIGG.
The Argentine legend helped secure his side’s place in the World Cup 2022 final after beating Croatia 3-0.
Messi opened the scoring from the spot and then played a major part in Julian Alvarez’s second goal, which capped off the game.

Ex-Manchester United captain Keane was on punditry duty in Qatar and left singing his praises.
He said: “It’s a pleasure to watch him live, it really is.
“Obviously, we played at a really good level but the level he’s at, at his age, even the third goal he’s doing that against some brilliant players, some really good players.
“Honestly it’s brilliant, absolutely fantastic, what a player. And do you know what? I really hope he goes on to win the World Cup.
“I think that would be the icing on the cake for the man, he’s just fantastic, consistency. Listen, we’ll be here all night talking about the awards that he’s won.”
Keane added that was was “privileged” to watch Messi at work – but named one thing the Barcelona icon could not pull off.
He said: “Saying that, I reckon he’s never jumped over a bin like I have.”
Keane was referencing the celebration he pulled off during an ITV kickabout during the World Cup. The former Irish international scored during a five-a-side game – with Micah Richards in goal – and proceeded to celebrate by leaping over a bin.
    ‘Genius’ Messi ‘bullied’ Josko
Lionel Messi was accused of “BULLYING” Josko Gvardiol and the rest of the Croatia defence with his wizardry.
Messi put Argentina in the lead before Manchester City’s Julian Alvarez’s doubled sealed a 3-0 route to the World Cup final.
The duo then linked up again to put the game beyond doubt with 20 minutes to go.

Alvarez finished off after a mesmerising run, in which the PSG superstar gave RB Leipzig’s Gvardiol the run around.
Messi’s twisting and turning left the defender in a heap of trouble – and fans online in awe.
One said: “Messi is a joke. He’s just scrambled Gvardiol on multiple occasions in a 10-second spell. Bullying.”
Another said: “Listen to me. Gvardiol is a good defender. Very good. Lionel Messi just destroyed him. DESTROYED HIM.”
One added: “Not Messi alone bullying Croatia’s defence.”
Another added: “Messi is just bullying Croatia out there.”
    Imaan up for the Cup
Model Imaan Hammam shows her unwavering support for the surprise package of the Qatar World Cup.
She is half Moroccan and showed her allegiance by modelling Victoria’s Secret lingerie in the team’s red.
Imaan, 26, has also got behind the team by posting pictures of herself wearing the team shirt.

Morocco — the first African and Arab nation to reach the World Cup semi-finals — play France tonight.
Let’s see if they can pull a Rabat out of the hat . .
Imaan has previously credited her mum for inspiring her in her modelling career.

She said: “I don’t come from a wealthy family.
“We’ve had our struggles but she was inspirational.
“My mum has been a big inspiration for me as well.”
    RESULT: Argentina 3 Croatia 0
Magical Lionel Messi hit the penalty opener and masterminded Julian Alvarez’s double as Argentina set up a World Cup final with France or Morocco.
Messi turned in the performance of the tournament to make the difference against an otherwise-competitive Croatia side.
The PSG legend, 35, has netted five and set up four of Argentina’s nine World Cup goals in Qatar.
Man Utd behind Arsenal in Felix race
Arsenal are the favourites to sign Atletico Madrid star Joao Felix, report Marca.
The Portuguese international has impressed at the World Cup and Atleti want to sell the versatile attacker.
Man Utd, PSG and Aston Villa are also in the race to sign him.
    GOAL: Argentina 3 Croatia 0
Lionel Messi masterminded Julian Alvarez’s second goal on 69 minutes to all but put Argentina in the final.

    Better than Maradona’s ’86 goal?
Julian Alvarez put Argentina 2-0 up against Croatia after a brilliant run from his own half to score a goal compared to Diego Maradona’s most famous moment ever.
The sensational solo goal immediately drew comparisons with Maradona’s strike against England in 1986, despite requiring a little bit of luck.
Alvarez, 22, was back defending a Croatia set-piece during tonight’s semi-final, when Argentina managed to launch a counter-attack.
Its initial protagonist Lionel Messi was brought down, although the ball subsequently fell to Alvarez just shy of the halfway line.

From there he embarked on an amazing solo run, driving at the heart of the Croatian defence.
It appeared that Josip Juranovic had managed to tackle him, only for the ball to ricochet back into Alvarez’s path.
Left-back Borna Sosa then seemed favourite to cut out the attack, only for his scuffed clearance to also rebound back to Alvarez.
The forward then found himself through on goal, poking the ball past Dominik Livakovic to give his side a 2-0 lead five minutes before half-time.
Despite elements of good fortune, the goal was compared to Maradona’s by fans online.
One wrote: “The goal scored by Julian Alvarez is better than that of Maradona in 86.”
England must stop ‘finding way to lose’
Roy Keane slammed England for “finding a way to lose” against France, using the analogy of having “your foot on somebody’s throat” and easing off.
Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions crashed out of the World Cup at the quarter-final stages in Qatar. England lost 2-1 to France with Harry Kane missing a late penalty.
Manchester United legend and ex-Ireland international Keane criticised Southgate’s squad for failing to prevail in a tournament again.

He said on ITV: “What England are doing in a lot of these big games, is they’re finding a way to lose.”
England were beaten by Croatia in the World Cup 2018 semi-finals. And they lost on penalties to Italy in last summer’s European Championship final.
Keane blamed mindset and pressure on England’s past failures.
Asked how to win tournaments, he said: “That’s where the players have to take control.
“I suppose it might be a lack of experience in big tournaments and big games, I know a lot of the England players have won trophies at club level.
“When we were at the game against France the other night, I describe when you’re in that position and you have your foot on somebody’s throat, you’ve got to press down. Don’t ease off.
“If you take the pressure off a good team like France, and when you’re in the quarter-finals they’re going to have quality, as soon as they eased off the got punished for it.”
    H/T: Argentina 2 Croatia 0
Julian Alvarez’s breakaway goal after he won Lionel Messi’s penalty opener put Argentina 45 minutes from the World Cup final.
Croatia performed well for large spells but created litle.

‘Ronaldo relationship with Mendes falling apart’
Cristiano Ronaldo’s relationship with long-time agent Jorge Mendes is believed to be falling apart, according to reports.
The Portuguese superstar, 37, succeeded in having his Manchester United contract ripped up last month following his explosive interview with Piers Morgan.
Following his departure from Old Trafford, he then concentrated on trying to win the World Cup with Portugal.
But their quarter-final exit at the hands of Morocco means he flies back from Qatar a free agent in search of a new club.
Ronaldo has been linked with big offers from Saudi Arabian sides Al Hilal and Al-Nassr.
But it remains to be seen whether he will take up those offers – with European interest thought to be few and far between.
And according to AS, clubs are now bypassing Ronaldo’s agent, Jorge Mendes, and speaking to the player himself.
Mendes, 56, has represented Ronaldo ever since he left Sporting Lisbon to join Man Utd in 2003.
But now he is thought to be less involved in the Real Madrid legend’s dealings.
    GOAL: Argentina 1 Croatia 0
Lionel Messi smashed home a penalty opener.

    Arteta delighted by White return
Mikel Arteta has broken his silence on Ben White’s England World Cup exit.
That’s after the Arsenal star returned to club action in Tuesday’s friendly win over AC Milan.
White, 25, was part of Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions squad for their adventure in Qatar. But the centre-back left prior to their last-16 win over Senegal due to “personal reasons.”

And stunning reports claimed White went home after being involved in a training ground bust-up with assistant boss Steve Holland.
White has since linked up with Arsenal for the remainder of their Dubai training camp and even broke his silence over the issue yesterday.
Arteta said: “Very pleased [to have him back]. Everybody has been giving him a lot of support and love.
“We know the reasons he had to leave the camp. We are delighted to have him back and he looked in really good shape.
“I’ve been having conversations with all the players at the World Cup.
“Not only with Ben but with all the players to try to give support when somebody needs it.”

Fans claim Fifa ‘trolling Kane’ with tweet gaffe
Fifa were left with egg on their face after accidentally tweeting an advertisement showing a World Cup semi-final between England and USA.
Argentina take on Croatia for a place in the final in Qatar on Tuesday night.
On the other side of the draw, defending champions France will take on Morocco on Wednesday.

And while the two last-four clashes were correct on Fifa’s official website, the tweet football’s governing body sent out showed an image of England vs USA – with Harry Kane and Christian Pulisic plastered over it.
Alongside it, they added the caption: “A spot in the final awaits! You won’t want to miss tonight’s action!”
England were knocked out in the quarter-finals by France, while USA exited in the last-16 after losing to Holland.
It was clearly a picture Fifa did not realise would show up when they sent out the link. And the tweet was swiftly deleted a few minutes after being posted.
But not before some social media users spotted the blatant mistake and reacted to the mishap. One person said: “Are you trolling Kane?”
    Wenger secret ‘role’ for Morocco
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta may have secretly helped develop the blueprint to Morocco’s stunning World Cup run to the semi-finals.
Morocco manager Walid Regragui – managing at native side Wydad AC at the time – attended the Spaniard’s 2021 masterclass via zoom on the Gunners’ 2020 FA Cup win.
In that call, Arteta broke down Arsenal’s 2-0 FA Cup semi-final win over Manchester City and the behind-closed-doors 2-1 final win over Chelsea.

Regragui, 47, listened with intent and was clearly taking notes, as just a year later he is managing in a World Cup semi-final.
Morocco are the Qatar World Cup’s dark horses, and topped a group consisting of 2018 finalists and fellow semi-finalists, Croatia, as well as Belgium’s golden generation and an impressive Canada side.
The North African side then slayed 2010 winners Spain 3-0 on penalties after drawing 0-0 in normal time.
Portugal came up next in the quarters and Morocco pulled off an unlikely 1-0 win to become the first African country to reach the last four of the competition, going one further than Cameroon 1990, Senegal 2002 and Ghana 2010.
Impressively, Morocco have conceded just one goal in the winter tournament and it didn’t even come from an opposition player.

    Lionel Messi reacts
“I would say the first match [the defeat against Saudi Arabia] was a hard blow because we had been unbeaten in six matches. To start in such a way in a World Cup, we did not think we would lose to Saudi Arabia.
“It was an acid test of the whole squad but we proved how strong we are. We won the other matches and it was very difficult what we did. Every match was a final and we were aware if we did not win things would be complicated for us.
“We have won five finals and I hope this is the case for the final on Sunday. We lost in the first match due to fine details but it helped us to be stronger.”

    A clinical performance from Argentina.

    From the grounds
SunSport’s Martin Lipton reports live from the Lusail Stadium:
“You may remember all that kerfuffle at the start of last season.
“Spurs and Aston Villa caved when Romero, Martinez and Buendia told them they were not going to listen to a demand to stay behind and headed off for international duty – despite Covid rules which meant quarantine on their return.
“Indeed, their Covid status caused absolute chaos when the qualifying match against Brazil was cancelled because some of the Argentines faked their exemption certificates.
“But this is why they would do anything to play for their country. Anything.
“That sheer sense of national pride, echoing from all sides of the Lusail Iconic Stadium.
“Even the subs on the sidelines are joining in the songs now.”

Five minutes have been added on.
Argentina are just five minutes away from a World Cup final…
    From the grounds
SunSport’s Martin Lipton reports live from the Lusail Stadium:
“The Argentine fans are pogo-ing all round the stadium.
“This is delirium, joy, devotion, delight.
“Modric departs. Is that a glimmer of a tear in his gimlet eyes?
    “Maybe.
“But what a career. What a player. Heart and soul of his team.”
    86. Argentina 3-0 Croatia
Another change for Argentina as Foyth replaces Molina.
    85. Argentina 3-0 Croatia
    Huge chance for Croatia!
Majer sends a corner towards Perisic in the box.
The wing-back flicks it on at the front post as Lovren makes a direct run at goal, but the defender can’t get a touch on the ball to direct it on target.
    83. Argentina 3-0 Croatia
Chance for Argentina as Mac Allister fires a shot at goal, but his effort flies wide.
    81. Argentina 3-0 Croatia
    Another change for Croatia.
Modric leaves the pitch in what could be his final World Cup game.
He has been replaced by Majer.

    78. Argentina 3-0 Croatia
Argentina have made two more changes.
    Dybala has replaced Alvarez.
    Palacios has replaced De Paul.
    From the grounds
SunSport’s Martin Lipton reacts to Alvarez’s goal from the Lusail Stadium:
    “Okay, that’s just sensational.
    “Utterly sensational.
“And it means Argentina and Messi get the chance for their last Tango against the Parisians.
“Gvardiol has been outstanding all month.
“But the masked defender looked like an out of control bull being tormented by a matador as Messi left him with twisted blood before pulling back for Alvarez to sweep home.
“The victory chants are exactly that. This one is done and dusted.
“Argentina are back here in Lusail on Sunday.
“Revenge for Nizhny Novgorod four years ago.
“More importantly, another World Cup Final.”
    70. Argentina 3-0 Croatia
    Wow.
Messi picks up the ball on halfway line before driving down the right, cutting into the box and leaving Gvardiol in the dust.
He then squares it to Alvarez with an inch-perfect pass and the striker slots it past Livakovic and into the back of the net.
    Credit: Getty
    69. GOOOOAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLL ARGENTINA!
Alvarez strikes again after a moment of sheer magic from Messi!

    68. Argentina 2-0 Croatia
Romero is booked for a clumsy challenge on Petkovic.
    From the grounds
SunSport’s Martin Lipton reports live from the Lusail Stadium:
“Sending on Martinez for Paredes and going five at the back signals Argentina are less than confident about their defensive line.
“But it will hand Croatia the initiative.
“Holland caused mayhem by launching it towards the box.
“That is not the Croatian way, normally.
“Yet needs must, when the Devil drives.”
    63. Argentina 2-0 Croatia
Huge chance for Croatia as Lovren climbs above his marker to get onto the end of a cross and head the ball towards goal, but Martinez comes off his line to make the save.
    62. Argentina 2-0 Croatia
    Argentina make a change.
Paredes makes way for Lisandro Martinez.

Arsenal survive a late scare and come away winners in Dubai.
Goals from Odegaard and Nelson were the difference, with Tomori grabbing a consolation in the end.

    Arsenal 2-1 Milan

    Arsenal 2-1 Milan
90, Tonali strikes one from distance, but it couldn’t bend back in time.
There will be a hefty 7 added minutes of stoppage time here.
    Arsenal 2-1 Milan
88, Cedric sells Hein short who just about gets there before the on-rushing Lazetic.
That could have been a disastrous end to Arsenal’s evening.
Meanwhile, Smith and Nwaneri are on for Odegaard and Lokonga.
    Arsenal 2-1 Milan
86, A reminder that whatever the result at the final whistle, we will have a penalty shootout with an extra point up for grabs for the winner.
    Arsenal 2-1 Milan
85, Tomori barges into Marquinhos off the ball and escapes a booking.
The crowd are booing the goalscorer every time he receives the ball now.
The polar opposite of ‘friendly’ from the defender.
    Arsenal 2-1 Milan
83, Teenagers Sousa and Cozier-Duberry are on for Tierney and Nelson.

After a relatively comfortable afternoon, the Gunners are suddenly under the cosh.

    Milan have a free-kick.
    Arsenal 2-0 Milan

    Arsenal 2-0 Milan
71, Nketiah looks to do brilliantly to hold the ball up against his man, but is booked for a flailing arm to the face of Gabbia.
Nketiah looks rightfully bemused. Nothing in that.
    Time for another water break.
    Arsenal 2-0 Milan
70, Some fantastic interplay between the left feet of Vieira and Odegaard.
Tierney switches it to Vieira at the back stick who looks less comfortable on his right, shanking wayward pass into green shirts.
    Arsenal 2-0 Milan
68, The pace of the game has slowed a little.
You sense some more substitutions won’t be far away.
    Arsenal 2-0 Milan

    Paul the other one
Scott Quigg walks Butler to the ring where Joe Gallagher will take charge of the Englishman’s corner.

But I lost track of pop music around 2006 – just after the Pigeon Detectives really peaked.

With an eye on moving up a fourth weight, Inoue says: “I finally became undisputed bantamweight champion, thank you very much.
“This has been a long journey for me but this is the final chapter at bantamweight and I have made it.
“Now I consider to change my division.”
    11 heaven
Inoue showing once again why he is a pound-for-pound superstar.
Barely absorbed a blow in almost 11 rounds, yet landed dozens, to become undisputed bantamweight king.
Watch out super-bantams, this Monster is coming.
    Inoue way out
Paul Butler worked so hard but could not go the distance.
He had all of his oxygen robbed away by a right hand.
When he backed onto the ropes to regain his breath, Inoue pounced and unloaded until Butler had nowhere to go but down.
    Inoue wins KO – R11

    Inoue vs Butler – R10
Butler has showed tremendous courage and resilience.
Inoue has thoroughly abused his ribs with hooks and he is still about to bounce and move around the ring.
Such a disciplined performance from Butler. A hard gameplan to stick to, especially under constant fire.
    Inoue vs Butler – R10
The commentators are slamming Butler’s negative performance but he is doing his best.
Going toe-to-toe with Inoue gets you beat-up and beaten.
Butler tries an uppercut but is punished with a right hand.
    Inoue vs Butler – R9
Butler throwing shots toward the back of this stanza after a slow start.
Inoue has slapped marks into the Englishman’s face in this round.
One right hand went right down the pipe but still didnt wobble the 1-100 underdog.
    Inoue vs Butler – R9
Butler bleeding from his right nostril but that’s his only sign of damage after eight one-sided rounds.
No antics from Inoue this round, straight violence.
Butler almost running around the edge of the ring now.
    Inoue vs Butler – R8
Most proactive round from Butler, combinations thrown and shots landed.
Inoue sticks his hands behind his back like Roy Jones, chin the sky begging to be hit.
But still Butler cannot land and the pair reset.
    Inoue vs Butler – R7
Inoue retreats to the ropes voluntarily and pleads with Butler to engage in a fight.
Butler is frustrating Inoue but not scoring with the judges.
Inoue does an Ali-shuffle but it’s wasted in such a one-sided bout.
    Inoue vs Butler – R7
Inoue so eager to catch Butler with a counter that he’s standing in range with his hands down by his waist.
Butler still hesitates to throw and when he does it’s with little conviction.
Inoue is happy to take a couple of jabs – with no guard up – if it creates an opening for him.
    Inoue vs Butler – R6
Butler’s tough torso appears able to absorb these Inoue digs.
Inoue drops his hands and showboats, teasing Butler to launch an attack.
Another round for the Japanese Monster.
    Inoue vs Butler – R6
A right hook sneaks around Butler’s guard and clips his ear.
A left hook double fromn Butler scores, head and body of Inoue tagged but not hurt.
    Butler still so brave.
    Inoue vs Butler – R5
Butler still bravely jabbing at Inoue, the Englishman tries and uppercut-hook combination too.
Inoue, in his yellow-tassled boots, is biding his time and waiting for a counter oppotunity.
We are 30 seconds away from Butler winning his first round and then Inoue pins him to the ropes and peppers him again, so it probably slips away.
    Inoue vs Butler – R4
Butler gets bullied back into that same neutral corner again and ships a dozen shots.
Inoue is going through the arsenal, a hat-trick of lead uppercuts from the Japan star whip into Butler’s guard.
Another round to Inoue, whitewash so far. 4-0.
    Inoue vs Butler – R4
Inoue so relaxed he swings his open arms across his body a couple of times, as part of his warm-up, in round four.
Butler coach Joe Gallagher to show some “SWAGGER”
Not sure how that will help as he gets peppered with violent shots from a mini-Mike Tyson.
    Inoue vs Butler – R3
Butler fires off a combination, hooks and right hands to Inoue’s head and body.
Bold attack from the huge underdog but Inoue not hurt.
Butler slips an Inoue right hand and lands his own lead left-hook.
Inoue fires off a volley and a couple land on Butler’s gloves just after the bell.
    Inoue vs Butler – R3
Inoue backs Butler into a nutral corner and unloads.
The Cheshire man covers up and blocks and parries well.
Inoue goes to head and body, the leather on skin sound is sickening.
But Butler soaks it up and slips out of the corner.
    Inoue vs Butler – R2
Butler throws a right hand but Inoue counters with a little left hook.
Inoue ends the session cracking two trademark left hooks into Butler’s right flank.
But the Brit has ribs of steele and survives another session.
    Inoue vs Butler – R2
Right to the head, left to the body from Inoue. Technically superby but Butler blocks.
But Inoue is ruthless and fires off five more rasoing shots.
Everything Inoue throws is a potential KO, nothing is wasted.
    Inoue vs Butler – R2
Butler’s defence is watertight but even taking Inoue shots on the gloves and arms will be painful.
Inoue arrows a right to the Butler ribs again.
Butler tries a double-jab that Inoue doesn’t counter.
    Inoue vs Butler – R1

World Cup 2022 LIVE: Thomas Tuchel in frame for England job after Qatar exit as Gareth Southgate considers future

THOMAS TUCHEL is in the frame for the England job after the Three Lions came crashing out of the World Cup.Aurelien Tchouameni’s long-range strike saw the French take the lead but Harry Kane netted from the spot to level the score.
However, Olivier Giroud netted to put France ahead towards the end of the game and they have since returned home.
Gareth Southgate is set to consider his future, with two years left remaining on his contract.
Elsewhere, a new ball has been unveiled ahead of the semi-finals as Morocco shocked the world to make the next round.
They join Argentina and Croatia, who both progressed, and will face France.

    USA’s Reyna upset team-mates
The majority of the USA squad were unhappy with the efforts of their midfielder Gio Reyna at the World Cup.
The Borussia Dortmund star, 20, was a peripheral figure in Qatar, and American boss Greg Berhalter revealed: “We had a player that was clearly not meeting expectations on and off the field.
“[It was] one of 26 players – so it stood out.”
    ETH: Rashford can emulate Mbappe
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag believes their striker Marcus Rashford can reach the same level as Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe.
Ahead of Rashford and England’s World Cup quarter-final defeat to Mbappe and France, Ten Hag drew parallels between the two pacy forwards.
He said: “I believe when Marcus’s positioning is on the back of the defending line, there is almost no better player in the world.
“There is Mbappe in this moment, a type like him.
“But when he (Rashford)’s getting in that position, he’s great and you see he’s really improved also out of possession.”
    Morocco’s Bounou believes in miracles
Morocco keeper Yassine Bounou says their run to the World Cup semi-finals proves that “miracles” can happen.
The Atlas Lions face holders France on Wednesday with a chance to progress to a final against either Argentina or Croatia.
Sevilla star Bounou, 31, has been key to their success, and said: “I am in the same state as every fan of this team – I keep thinking, ‘pinch me, I’m dreaming’.
“To get this far, we have had to change mentalities, get rid of this feeling of inferiority.
“We are able to face anyone, regardless of the level of the competition.
“Future generations will know that Morocco can perform miracles.”
    Four Gunners available after Qatar
A number of Arsenal’s World Cup stars are available for them again after national team duty in Qatar.
Swiss star Granit Xhaka, England’s Ben White, Ghana’s Thomas Partey and American Matt Turner have rejoined the squad ahead of a Dubai Super Cup friendly against AC Milan tomorrow.
    Ready for Martinez vs Varane?
The World Cup final could well see two Manchester United team-mates go head-t-head.
Argentina centre-half Lisandro Martínez will be hoping to shut out Croatia in one semi-final in Qatar.
And France defender Raphael Varane will be hoping to shackle Morocco in the other last-four tie.
However it goes down in Sunday’s final, Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag will want them both back fit and focused for a Prem visit from Nottingham Forest on December 27.
    Does Saka really need rest?
England’s exit from the World Cup means Bukayo Saka will be heading back to Arsenal for club duty now.
Gunners boss Mikel Arteta may well give his 21-year-old winger a rest – but does he really need it?
The guys on the Arsecast Extra podcast discussed this very issue in their latest episode, and it seems to be a point of debate.
A promo for the show says: “We had an interesting question on the Arsecast Extra yesterday about the return of World Cup players.
“[It was pointed] out that in the same time period last season, Saka played more minutes for Arsenal than he did for England in Qatar. Is there really any need for rest?”
    Last Gunner standing in Qatar
The only Arsenal player still in with a chance of winning the World Cup is… William Saliba.
Four Gunners – England duo Aaron Ramsdale and Bukayo Saka, Brazil’s Gabriel Martinelli, and France’s Saliba – were called up for Qatar.
Now it is only the 21-year centre-half, who is having a breakthrough season at the Emirates, in with a chance of becoming a world champion as the tournament enters the last-four stage.
Holders France face Morocco on Wednesday for the right to meet either Argentina or Croatia in Sunday’s final.
    Ferdinand critical of Southgate substitutions
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand felt England boss Gareth Southgate got his substitutions wrong in their World Cup quarter-final defeat to France.
All four of the Three Lions’ changes came after Oliver Giroud had put the French 2-1 up and Manchester City’s mercurial Jack Grealish only got two minutes of injury-time to make an impact.
Ferdinand, 44, who won 81 caps for England, said on his Vibe with Five podcast: “Our substitutions is where I think Gareth Southgate let us down.
“I think he’s been pitch-perfect, touch-perfect in almost every decision he’s made up to this point.
“But you get into a game like yesterday where this is really where it matters now, and I think Gareth Southgate came up short in the tactical element in terms of substitutions.”
    Referee Lahoz’s World Cup exit
Spanish referee Mateu Lahoz has been sent home from the World Cup after his display in the fiery last-eight clash between Argentina and Holland, according to Cope.
Dutch right-back Denzel Dumfries was sent off and 15 players were booked during the chaotic clash at the Lusail Iconic Stadium.
    Gunners tracking Chelsea star Pulisic
Arsenal are one of a number of clubs interested in Chelsea forward Christian Pulisic, according to the Mirror.
The 24-year-old United States play-making forward caught the eye with his displays at the World Cup and bagged a crucial winner over Iran to help them progress to the knock-out stages.
    Juventus keen on Chelsea’s Mount
Juventus are lining up a surprise swoop for Chelsea star Mason Mount, according to CalcioMercatoWeb.
The midfielder, 23, is coming into the final 18 months of his Blues deal and was on show with England at this winter’s World Cup in Qatar.
Apparently, the Old Lady are prepared to sell Weston McKennie and Adrien Rabiot and return on-loan Leandro Paredes to Paris Saint-Germain to fund a move to bring Mount to Serie A.
    Rashford set for deal extension
Manchester United are set to trigger a one-year contract extension for England World Cup star Marcus Rashford.
The Red Devils forward justified his selection for Qatar with three goals in five games and is said to be attracting interest from French giants Paris Saint-Germain.
Now United boss Erik ten Hag has confirmed they are ready to exercise their option to extend his deal at Old Trafford.
    Five potential Southgate successors
Will he stay or will he go now? Gareth Southgate is said to be considering his future as England boss and SunSport have come up with five potential successors.
Former Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel is said to be interested if approached. The German is still a free agent after being sacked by the Blues in September.
Fellow former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard is another option. He has not pulled up any trees as Everton gaffer but he never let the Three Lions down as a free-scoring midfielder.
Newcastle chief Eddie Howe has taken them from relegation battlers to Champions League hopefuls, albeit with a very decent transfer kitty. And with Toon stars like Callum Wilson coming into the England reckoning, Howe could fit the bill.
Steve Cooper has done a terrific job in brining giants Nottingham Forest back to the top flight after a painful 23-year absence so he knows how to handle the pressure and expectation which would come with the England job.
And finally, free agent Mauricio Pochettino could do it. He performed heroics at both Southampton and Spurs as – as a former PSG boss – he will have the inside track on Kylian Mbappe if the Three Lions ever come up against France again!
    Good morning footy fans!
England’s stars and staff have touched back down on home turf following Saturday night’s heartbreaking World Cup exit.
The Three Lions suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to France in the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals at the Al Bayt Stadium.
Les Bleus controversially opened the scoring with Aurelien Tchouameni’s long-range stunner and Harry Kane levelled things up from the penalty spot before Olivier Giroud extended his scoring record with 53 goals.
England’s heroic captain had the chance to equalise once more with another spot-kick but he sadly missed the target.
That meant that our boys were on the next plane home – but not before they showed their class off the pitch this morning.
England showered hotel staff with gifts as they left to fly home from Qatar.
Gareth Southgate claims England went “so close” to glory in Qatar and are now consistently “feeding at the top table of world football”.
Southgate told England’s YouTube channel: “Ultimately we’ve fallen short, I can’t get away from that.
“But we’re feeding at the top table of European and world football consistently now.
“If we’re in that place with the depth of squad that we’ve got, then that’s exciting and important for England.
“It’s a difficult time for everybody. We’re really aware of that. I think the players have represented them in the right way, played in the right way.”
Olivier Giroud was reportedly seconds from being subbed when he broke England’s hearts.

The France striker celebrated with a huge mocking laugh when Three Lions’ skipper Harry Kane missed a late match-saving penalty in the World Cup quarter-final.
But he responded positively after icon Ronaldo and England sub Rashford posted touching messages following their weekend exits from Qatar.
Manchester United discard Ron, 37, hinted he is considering his international future after appearing to accept his greatest remaining dream – Portugal winning the World Cup – is now over.
Mbappe replied to the social media post with a GOAL emoji.

He has seen first-hand all the young talent at the country’s disposal, both at Stamford Bridge and in opposition teams.
Chelsea stars Mason Mount, Reece James, Conor Gallagher, Raheem Sterling and Ben Chilwell have all been part of the current set-up.
The FA is desperate for Southgate to stay on despite Saturday’s 2-1 World Cup quarter-final defeat to France.

    Saka’s breaks silence
Bukayo Saka has broken his silence after England’s World Cup exit with a touching social media post thanking the “special” squad, Gareth Southgate and supporters.
He wrote: “I can’t explain how I feel today, but we gave everything out there and we really wish we could have brought it home for you all this time.
“I just wanted to say a genuine thank you to our fans, you’ve all been amazing both at the games and at home this tournament and we felt it.
“This group are really special and talented, so although we are disappointed now, I am really excited for our future. Thank you to my @England family – my team mates, Gareth, the coaching and all the backroom staff for all their hard work and dedication to help us get this far.
“We will build from this and with your support we will keep improving and making progress together. See you all soon.”
    Fury supports England’s heroes

The Three Lions departed as classily off the pitch as they had on it with their unlucky 2-1 quarter-final loss to France.

England players handed out signed shirts and hugged workers, who in turn said Gareth Southgate’s 25-man squad had “made them feel like princes” and became “like family”.
Midfield sensation Jude Bellingham urged fans to “stick with us” as he went over to chat outside the hotel and sign autographs.
Dave the Cat heading to UK
It wasn’t all doom and gloom for England after their heartbreaking World Cup quarter-final defeat to France.
The Three Lions’ unofficial tournament mascot, Dave the cat, began his journey to the UK as Gareth Southgate’s squad also headed for home.

Dave became the squad’s mascot after joining England stars at meal times during their stay in Qatar.
John Stones and Kyle Walker pledged to adopt their furry friend if England won the World Cup.
But, despite crashing out 2-1 to France on Saturday, Dave is still heading to the UK to be rehomed.
He was seen being loaded into a crate to begin his journey shortly after Jack Grealish, Harry Maguire and Co left their Souq Al Wakrah hotel today.

Potter & Howe tipped for England
Graham Potter and Eddie Howe are among the favourites to be appointed England’s next manager, with Thomas Tuchel and Steven Gerrard also in the mix.
That’s according to bookmakers Betfair, who’ve installed the pair as frontrunners to succeed Gareth Southgate.
Many have described Chelsea’s Potter as the obvious long-term successor to Southgate and he’s available at 7/2 to secure the position.
Newcastle chief Eddie Howe is fractionally behind in the betting market at 4/1 to swap St James’ Park for St George’s Park.
Pochettino, who revealed he was open to managing a national side, is further behind at 5s.
Steve Cooper is 6/1, ahead of Thomas Tuchel (10/1), Frank Lampard (11/1) and Steven Gerrard (14/1).

    Morgan backs Southgate
Piers Morgan has led the calls from players and pundits for Gareth Southgate to stay as England boss.
He tweeted: “Lots of debate over whether Gareth Southgate should continue as England manager. My criteria is this: could anyone else have done better with this (very good) squad of players?
“I don’t think so, and I like the way his team plays & behaves under him. So, I say: carry on Gareth.”
    Lloris backs Kane
Hugo Lloris insists Harry Kane has the strength of character to bounce back from his World Cup penalty agony.
The veteran keeper said: “There were a lot of emotions out there because we were in the middle of a battle and at the end we were all very happy.
“But on a personal level, I am also saddened because Harry is a team-mate, a man whom I respect enormously and someone who took responsibility in a crucial moment of the game.
“It was a turning point of the match and I can only share this moment of pain with him.
“But I know that Harry is strong and that this hurt will pass for him.”
England crashed out despite winning tactical battle
England have crashed out of the World Cup yet again in devastating fashion, losing to reigning champions France.
Harry Kane will go to bed with nightmares of his late penalty miss after previously converting which would have put the game level once more.
Gareth Southgate’s side were defeated 2-1 but for much of the match England were the better team – so what went wrong?
Many were critical of England and Southgate or struggling to come out on top in big games, especially on the grandest stage at the World Cup.
Defeat to Les Blues didn’t help to silence critics and now supporters are further divided over the future of the Three Lions manager.
England were unfortunate not to progress into the semi-finals, but tournament football can be cruel and takes no prisoners.
SunSport takes you through the three key tactical details where this quarter-final was won and lost between the two European titans – and one player who made the difference.
Ronaldo breaks silence after World Cup exit
Cristiano Ronaldo posted an emotional statement after his “biggest and most ambitious dream” of winning a World Cup ended.
Ronaldo, who is currently a free agent after being sacked by Manchester United, will be 42 by the time the next World Cup kicks off.
It is unknown whether he will play on until then.
Ron wrote on Instagram this afternoon: “Winning a World Cup for Portugal was the biggest and most ambitious dream of my career.

“Fortunately, I won many titles of international dimension, including for Portugal, but putting the name of our country on the highest level in the world was my biggest dream.
“I fought for it. I fought hard for this dream. In the 5 appearances that I scored in World Cups over 16 years, always alongside great players and supported by millions of Portuguese people, I gave my all.
“I left everything on the field. I never turned my face to the fight and I never gave up on that dream.
“Unfortunately, yesterday the dream ended. It is not worth reacting to heat.”
‘Thank you for the unconditional support’, says Rashford
Rashford wrote on Twitter: “The last few weeks have been a rollercoaster of emotions, each and every one of our team gave everything we had to be ready for what was thrown at us, we got close, but not close enough.
“I’ll make a promise that we will come again!
“Thank you for the unconditional support.”
Rashford has enjoyed a resurgence this season for the Red Devils after a difficult last campaign.
The forward carried that form with him into the World Cup, although the 3-0 win over Wales in the final group game was his only start of the tournament.
Rashford vows to come back stronger
Marcus Rashford has vowed England “will come again” after last night’s World Cup heartbreak.
The Manchester United ace came off the bench as the Three Lions went down 2-1 to reigning champions France in the quarter-finals.
Rashford replaced Phil Foden for the final five minutes, and came close to scoring a stunning equaliser with a free-kick that skimmed the roof of the net in stoppage time.
The 25-year-old was superb in Qatar, and was the Three Lions’ joint top scorer with Bukayo Saka on three goals.
Taking to social media the morning after the defeat, Rashford thanked fans for their support and vowed that England will return better than ever.

    Pickford and Trippier protect Kane
Jordan Pickford ushered away a camera operator as they tried to film Harry Kane’s penalty agony.
The England captain missed a late spot-kick to equalise in Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final against France.

It saw the defending champs cling on for a 2-1 win, setting up a semi-final against Morocco.
And devastated England players, including Kane, were overcome with emotion at the final whistle.
One camera operator decided to get a close-up of skipper Kane, who scored a penalty earlier on, as he leaned on his haunches with his head in his hands.
But teammate Pickford was having none of it as he and Kieran Trippier blocked the view.
Rice reveals Southgate’s post-game team talk
Rice, 23, who has 39 caps, delivered a strong midfield performance against France after a difficult start.
Asked about what Southgate said to the players afterwards, he said: “He was so proud of us as a group because of how we’ve been, how we’ve applied ourselves to the last month and what we’ve given in training sessions. Some of the lads that haven’t even had a minute, every day around the group.
“Against France, he got everything spot on again. It’s not on him. It’s not on him at all – the tactics were right, we played the right way.
“I think you can see on my face right now that I’m distraught because we really believed this year that it could be a year.”
England fans gutted but still ‘proud’
Devastated England fans last night drowned their sorrows after the Three Lions lost a nail-biting World Cup quarter-final 2-1 to France.
England battled hard in the second half but heartbroken Harry Kane hit his second penalty of the night over the bar – and with it missed a golden late chance to draw the Three Lions level again.

John Andrews, 39, who watched in Bristol, said: “We didn’t deserve to lose and should have had a penalty in the first half.
“I couldn’t believe some of the decisions the ref gave. I’m gutted.”
Gemma Wilson, 32, from Bristol, said: “I really thought Rashford’s free-kick was in.
“We deserved to get more out of the game. France were lucky. I’m so proud of the team.”
Arts practitioner Andrew Walker, 26,  who watched in Newcastle, said: “I’m proud of the team. I think the penalty that Harry Kane missed was just down to pressure.
“Losing to France is no disgrace, they are the World Champions at the end of the day.”
    Saka’s top performance
Notoriously tough-scoring French newspaper L’Equipe gave Bukayo Saka a higher match rating than Kylian Mbappe in Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final.
England winger Saka was superb throughout the 2-1 defeat – and scored a seven out of ten from L’Equipe.

Mbappe on the other hand was given a five, with right-back Kyle Walker doing well to keep the shackles on the France dangerman.
But, despite Saka’s score, he wasn’t Player of the Match in the eyes of the French newspaper.
Instead that honour went to France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
The captain was given an eight out of ten, higher than anyone else on the pitch.
‘Negativity’ will go away once we win something, says Rice
Rice added: “We weren’t overly-confident over here but we were confident enough that we really could win this tournament and that is not the mentality England have had over the years.
“I think we’ve handled it so well, if you look at the squad we are so young, but we’ve got so many top players.
“We’ve got to a semi-final, Euros final, obviously crashed out here at a quarter-final but in my opinion the better team lost and that shows how far we have come.
“I think sometimes the negativity surrounding us will go away once we have won something again.
“I think there will always be that pressure on us but I feel like it’s starting to sway that way that we’re getting back to a level where people are believing in us and the country is backing us.
“A few years ago, it wasn’t like that. So we can be really proud of ourselves as a group. But we need to go again because ultimately, international football is based on what you win, we haven’t won for years so that is what we want to try and do.”
Rice wants Southgate reign to continue
Declan Rice reckons the “negativity” surrounding England will only disappear once the Three Lions actually win something.
Yet with the next major tournament in Germany just 19 months away, the West Ham midfielder is desperate for Gareth Southgate to stay as manager.
England’s next game is on March 23 2023 and a trip to Naples to face Italy in a Euro2024 qualifier.
Rice said: “We’ve come so far. I think that’s credit to the manager, the spirit that he’s brought to this team and togetherness that we’ve got. Personally, I hope he stays.
“There’s a lot of talk around the manager. I think he’s been brilliant for us. I think there’s a lot of criticism that’s not deserved. I think he’s taken us so, so far. Further than what people expected.
“I really hope he stays because of the core group that we’ve got and what he’s made for us. It’s so special to be a part of, I love playing under him and I love playing for England.

    ‘Justice’ was served, says Rabiot
France midfielder Adrien Rabiot has bizarrely claimed “justice” was served when Harry Kane missed his second penalty.
The world champions saw off Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions with a 2-1 victory in the World Cup quarter-finals.
With six minutes left on the clock, England were handed the chance to draw level, again from the penalty spot.
Theo Hernandez went through the back of Mason Mount but it took for VAR to intervene for the spot-kick to be awarded.
This time, Kane made a mess of his effort and sent his shot flying over the crossbar.
Such an outcome was “justice”, according to France ace Rabiot, who says “hundreds of actions” similar aren’t awarded.
The Juventus man said: “First of all, I’m not sure that it’s really a foul.
“We’ve seen hundreds of actions like that that aren’t given.
“Of course, when he’s missed, we were happy, it was justice because there was no penalty.”
Lineker claims England’s time will come
England legend Gary Lineker is convinced this current generation of young stars will lead the nation to glory.
He tweeted his support of the Three Lions stars.
The former striker wrote: “Heartbreaking once again, but no shame in losing to an excellent French team and congratulations to them.
“There was so little to choose between the two sides. This fine young @England team gave their all and will only get better.
    “Their time will come.”
