    City fear nobody in draw
Having disposed of first Chelsea and now Liverpool, Man City have no one to fear in the draw for the quarter-final of the EFL Cup.
Here are the numbers you are looking out for:
    1 Charlton Athletic
    2 Leicester City
    3 Manchester United
    4 Newcastle United
    5 Nottingham Forest
    6 Southampton
    7 Wolverhampton Wanderers
    8 Manchester City
The draw is due to start shortly and you can follow it on the link above.
    Santa arrives early in Manchester
In Germany, Santa Claus does not come down the chimney but is an angle type-figure that arrives on Christmas Eve giving people gifts.
His Liverpool team must have got their dates mixed up as they continue to give their opponents gifts, week in, week out.
It is costing them points and more importantly, wins.
This isn’t an overnight problem and has been evident all season, but time to address this issue is slowly running out.

    Pep to pick the holes
You do not become a manager with the record of Guardiola without even analysing your wins as well as your defeats.
While the result will please him, it will be a concern how many times Liverpool got in against them in what was quite a one-sided game.
The amount of missed chances will also worry him, Brentford showed what happens if you take your chances against Man City.
Still plenty of work to do for the Spaniard, if he has any aspirations to catch his protégé at the top of the Premier League table.
    Belgian treats for Christmas time
Kevin De Bruyne put in the sort of performance that would make any football fan sit and watch in amazement.
The quality of delivery of his passing was nothing short of world-class this evening.
If anything, he was often let down by the quality of the person on the end of the pass.
People questioned whether, much like the rest of his international teammates, he was a spent force now.
What a way to answer your critics in 90 minutes of football.

    FT: Man City 3-2 Liverpool
As Oasis blares out of the stadium speakers, City are through to the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup.
The quarter-final draw starts in 30 minutes.
You can follow the draw live on the link above.
The football romantic wants to see a Manchester derby surely?
    FT: Man City 3-2 Liverpool
The referee brings the game to a close.
Liverpool, the current holders, are out of the EFL Cup.
City continue to the next round in a trophy they have grown to love during the Pep Guardiola era.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
90+3. This result will give City some confidence going back into their Premier League campaign.
Project ‘catch Arsenal’ resumes just after Christmas.
Jurgen Klopp will be looking for a different outcome from his first XI when back in league action.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
90+1. Rightly so, Kevin De Bruyne wins the man of the match award.
By far the best player on the pitch today.
City still look to attack, despite their one goal lead.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    89. It is harsh for either of these sides to go out so early in the competition.
The defending champions are going to get knocked out by the team who won this trophy four years in a row.
If they want to defend their crown, they need to find a moment of magic from somewhere.
We will have four minutes of added time.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    87. City have deserved their win today.
Liverpool could have quite easily turned it into a defeat, had they been more clinical in front of goal.
Overall, Man City have dominated the ball and the chances.
    Credit: Getty
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    85. The ball breaks to De Bruyne who looks to bend one in.
His shot has Kelleher beaten but Fabinho blocks the ball on the line.
Foden follows up with a good effort but the Liverpool keeper makes a good save down to his right.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    83. Oxlade-Chamberlain breaks from defence and strides forward into the Man City half.
One heavy touch gives the defender a 50/50 chance and the Liverpool man was never winning that one.
City look to manage the game now, passing it about and frustrating Liverpool.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    81. City attack again and cross finds Rodri running onto it.
He comes together with Kelleher and the referee awards a free kick to the keeper.
We are into the final ten minutes now and time is running out for Jurgen Klopp.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    79. It is all kicking off now as Rodri throws Fabinho to the ground.
It was a heavy tackle by the Brazilian but not as bad as Rodri was making out with his actions.
Both players are rightly shown a yellow card and we get on with the game.
    Credit: Getty
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    77. I wonder if any part of Jack Grealish’s subconscious knew that coming to City would see him spend more time on benches than a homeless person.
He has a chance to try and impress here.
Liverpool have to come at City so there should be plenty of space for the attacker to utilise.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    75. If you look at chances today, Darwin Nunez could have had a hat trick.
Then so could have Nathan Ake.
Imagine the score this game could have been, a festival of football.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    73. Grealish and Foden come on for City.
Not what any team wants to see really but Haaland and Palmer are brought off for them.
This has woken up the home fans a little.
Darwin Nunez wastes another good chance for Liverpool as he drags the ball wide of the far post.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    71. Naby Keita comes on for Liverpool.
He owes them a shift or two.
It has been a stop/start career for Keita in his time at Anfield.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    69. Liverpool comes forward and Oxlade-Chamberlain breaks into the box and goes to ground.
It looks as though the Liverpool man was trying to buy one there.
Minimal contact which caused the ex-Arsenal man to go down like a sniper had got him.
    Credit: Reuters
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    67. Man City’s training tops are getting more and more wild.
As Grealish pulls one off to notify his impending introduction.
I wonder if all these training tops will all get sewn together at some point as Pep Guardiola reveals himself as the tops collectively make the world’s biggest Banksy painting.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    65. Liverpool start to knock the ball around.
City are keeping their shape, almost inviting them to come onto them.
The ball breaks to Robertson on the back post.
He hits it on the volley and shows why he is not considered an attacking player when it comes to scoring goals.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    63. Liverpool’s only option to stop De Bruyne may be to put heavy challenges in so Pep brings him off right now.
The Belgian midfielder has been man of the match without a shadow of a doubt.
Performances like this show why he is rightly considered as one of the best to ever grace this league.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    61. John Stones comes on for Man City.
Liverpool need to find a way back into this game now.
Klopp will be disappointed that it was one his substitutes, Jordan Henderson, who failed to react to the short corner quick enough.
    Man City 3-2 Liverpool
    59. What a delivery from De Bruyne.
He could put a ball on any rock of your choosing on Mars with that right foot of his.
Liverpool sleeping again at a set piece but City take full advantage of it.

    Full-time stats
These are the stats for tonight’s featured game…
Burnley certainly gave a good account of themselves, as the stats show, but it was ultimately a lack of quality in the final third that let them down tonight, with Ashley Barnes missing the target on a number of occasions.
That said, we still thoroughly expect to see them back in the top-flight next season, as they showed that under Vincent Kompany they will be a tough team to play for any opposition.
The full-time stats of Manchester United vs Burnley
    Around the grounds
Manchester United and Burnley were not the only teams playing in the Carabao Cup round of 16 tonight, as Brighton crashed out against lower league opposition.
It is Charlton who took the Seagulls all the way, as a 0-0 draw forced the game to a penalty shootout, which Charlton won after SEVEN penalties were missed…
This is how the Carabao Cup RO16 results have gone so far…

    Wolves 2-0 Gillingham
    MK Dons 0-3 Leicester
    Newcastle United 1-0 Bournemouth
    Southampton 2-1 Lincoln City
    Blackburn Rovers 1-4 Nottingham Forest
Charlton 0-0 Brighton (Charlton 4-3 on pens)
    Manchester United 2-0 Burnley

The last game to be played is a huge one, as Manchester City take on Liverpool tomorrow at 8pm, which you can catch coverage of here on SunSport.
    Magnificent Marcus the difference
The SunSport man of the match tonight has to go to Marcus Rashford.
Coming off the back of a personally brilliant World Cup campaign, many viewers are keen to see if Rashy can keep up his brilliant performances in a Manchester United shirt.
And if tonight is anything to go by, he definitely can.
His goal was simply sublime, as he channeled his inner Leo Messi and drove with the ball from his own half before smashing a low shot into the bottom left corner.
    FT. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
The referee calls the game to a close, and it is Manchester United who move onto the Quarter-Finals of the Carabao Cup.
Commiserations to Burnley, who gave a good account of themselves, we may just see this fixture more than once next season if they keep this up.
    90+2. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
“Is there a fire drill?” Rings out from the Burnley fans at Old Trafford.
Their support has been brilliant and it is easy to see why they are at the top of the Championship.
    90. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
There will be four minutes of added time at the end of the second half.
Bruno Fernandes picks up a yellow card for leaving one on Connor Roberts, he now misses the Quarter-Final. Silly.
    88. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
    Double change for United.
Fred and Brandon Williams are replacing Marcus Rashford and Tyrell Malacia.
    86. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
Antony takes a really good touch to get away from the Burnley left back.
His shot is low and saved by Peacock-Farrell before Rashford is flagged for offside.
    84. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
Burnley should at least have one goal tonight.
Barnes misses a huge chance after a casual misplaced pass from Casemiro, and then is immediately substituted for Scott Twine.
    82. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
Maatsen is hacked down by Antony, who throws his toys out the pram even against Championship opposition.
He gets a yellow card for his efforts.
    80. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
It looks like this is going to be Manchester United’s night, as they are firmly in control of this one now.
Full credit to the travelling fans however, they have been noisy and brilliant all night long.
They are currently singing some rendition of The Twelve Days Of Christmas…
    78. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
Poor decision making from Antony, who just holds onto the ball for too long after Bruno makes a lung-busting run from box-to-box.
He just needs to get his head up there and play the ball earlier, the Brazilian.
    76. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
United get a free-kick within shooting distance, with Eriksen, Bruno and Rashford all lining up over it.
Bruno Fernandes pulls rank over the other contenders, but proceeds to smash it over the bar.
    74. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
Luke Shaw is on for United, another one of England’s World Cup players, he replaces Aaron Wan Bissaka.
Anthony Elanga is on too in replacement of Anthony Martial.
    72. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
Jay Rodriguez is warming up for Burnley.
Time to remind you that he has four Old Trafford goals in his career…
    70. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
It seems Rashford isn’t the only one who has been watching Messi, as Gudmundsson plays an inch perfect ball into Churlinov who really should get a goal back for Burnley.
His shot however is wide of the post, and a goal still eludes the visitors.
    66. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
Marcus Rashford looks full of confidence at Old Trafford.
He is pulling out all the stops now, with a cheeky nutmeg on Cullen before driving at the Burnley goal and eventually getting tackled.
In his Lionel Messi bag it seems…
    64. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
A potential problem for Burnley here, as star man Manuel Benson goes down and looks to be in some pain.
    He is replaced by Churlinov.
    62. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
Antony is on in replacement of Alejandro Garnacho.
The Brazilian has moved over to the right hand side, with Rashford now going to the left wing.
    60. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
    That is simply sensational…
Marcus Rashford picks the ball up in his own half, and charges down the right hand side, beating three Burnley defenders before smashing a low shot into the bottom left corner.
He is a man in form, but that is one for the highlight reel.
Marcus Rashford scored a beautiful solo goal to double United’s lead.Credit: Getty
    58. Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
    Wow. Wow. Wow.
Marcus Rashford doubles the lead with an incredible solo goal.
    56. Manchester United 1-0 Burnley
Harwood-Bellis puts in a big tackle on Martial which leaves the Frenchman on the floor, a sight all too familiar for Manchester United fans…
Antony immediately gets his jacket off, and that might just be the end of Martial’s night, despite being back on his feet.
    54. Manchester United 1-0 Burnley
It feels like the next goal could decide this game.
If Burnley get it, you’d back them to capitalise and get another, whereas if it goes United’s way the game could be dead and buried.
    52. Manchester United 1-0 Burnley
The Burnley wingers are very high and wide as the Burnley side looks somewhat reminiscent of Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.
I wonder how many people would have believed that comparison three years ago…

    Not over yet
Paris Saint-Germain superstar Lionel Messi is not retiring from international football and he will play at the next World Cup, claims former Argentina star Jorge Valdano.
Valdano told Cadena Cope: “When I interviewed him before the World Cup, off camera he told me that he was going to play in his fifth World Cup and that no footballer had played six.
“He told me that it was impossible, and he told me ‘if I’m a world champion I’ll keep my shirt on until the next World Cup.’
“We will see if Messi is capable. Football has shown that it is practically impossible to play in six World Cups”
    Argentina triumph recap
Argentina captain Lionel Messi finally won his first ever World Cup – the only trophy that has eluded his stunning 18-year career.
The Albiceleste won their third overall trophy in the competition – their first since 1986 – after beating France on penalties following a thrilling 3-3 draw.
Messi opened the scoring from the spot before Angel Di Maria doubled the Copa America champions’ lead.
But then the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s Paris Saint-Germain team-mate Kylian Mbappe took over and scored twice to equalise for Les Bleus.
Messi put the Argentines ahead during extra-time before Mbappe equalised again.
Argentina then won on penalties when Emiliano Martinez denied Kingsley Coman, Aurelien Tchouameni missed and Gonzalo Montiel beat Hugo Lloris
    Bayern line up Martinez move
Bayern Munich are looking to sign Argentina World Cup hero Emi Martinez from Aston Villa as a replacement for Manuel Neuer.
And the ex-Arsenal star’s agent admits a deal abroad could be close, saying: “Today there are few teams that can afford a goalkeeper like him.
“But Serie A, well, why not?
“Clearly aiming high, for the Champions League.”
    Ronaldo makes Worst Team XI
Cristiano Ronaldo has been named in a World Cup Worst XI.
The team was put together by data gathers Sofascore.
Ronnie leads the way up top with Lautaro Martinez.
Meanwhile, Edouard Mendy and Sergino Dest are also included.

    Petit slams France final effort
Emmanuel Petit has criticised France for their dull opening 70 minutes against Argentina in the World Cup final.
He told Mega Casino: “Even before we lost the match on penalties, I’m thinking ‘what the hell is wrong with us?’ Why did we wait 70 minutes to play the final?
“I can guarantee you that those French players, who were so close to touching the World Cup and had that taken away from them, when they take time to think about the game, they will tell you that what happened during the first half, that can’t happen in a World Cup final.
“It’s impossible. It takes a lot to get to the final and you need to be ready. They were not ready in the first half, that is a big regret. We only played for twenty minutes in the entire match.”
    Salt Bae in Cup trouble
Salt Bae has been criticised for joining in Argentina’s World Cup celebrations.
The celebrity chef was seen muscling in on Lionel Messi and Co’s party after their win against France on Sunday.
And Salt Bae even appeared to snatch the World Cup trophy from a BABY before posing for snaps.
Salt Bae slammed for touching £17m 18-carat World Cup trophy breaking FIFA etiquette while posing with Argentina stars
    Messi upstages Ronaldo once again
Lionel Messi has got one over Cristiano Ronaldo again… this time for the most-liked Instagram post in history.
The Argentina star shared photos of himself with the World Cup after beating France on Sunday.
And it has now garnered more likes than Ronaldo’s post of himself playing chess against Messi.
Not only that, Messi’s latest post has now overtaken the previous record holder for likes, set by a picture of an EGG.

    Messi in near-miss shocker
World Cup-winning captain Lionel Messi came close to being knocked off the back of an open top bus moments after returning to Argentina.
Messi and team-mates ducked under an overhead power cable with seconds to spare as they headed to the Argentine Football Association’s training ground.
Leandro Paredes was perched on the edge of the top deck of the bus but managed to keep his balance despite having to squirm away as it was almost on top of him.
He ducked down just in time but lost his baseball cap when the cable hit the top of his head and knocked it off.

    Benzema set for Zidane U-turn
Karim Benzema could come out of international retirement for France.
That’s only if Zinedine Zidane replaces Didier Deschamps.
Benzema quit the international scene just one day after France’s World Cup final defeat to Argentina, with reports claiming he was unhappy not have been included in the squad despite carrying an injury.
But Foot Mercato claims the Real Madrid man will make himself available should Zidane, as expected, replace Deschamps at the helm.
    Tops off for Argentina fan
The Argentina fan who risked jail by getting her kit off at the World Cup final has broken her silence by posting more topless videos.
It appeared Noe – who has named herself “The Topless Girl” on social media – and her friend escaped punishment in Qatar.
Noe shared more topless clips from Sunday’s celebrations.

    Martinez shares brilliant throwback snap
Argentina World Cup hero Emiliano Martinez has posted an incredible throwback photo as a kid from his Independiente days.
The Aston Villa man looks unrecognisable as a youngster.
And he’d never have known the huge role he was set to play in his country’s World Cup triumph in 2022.

    Party declared to celebrate win
Argentina has declared a national holiday on Tuesday to celebrate Lionel Messi and Co’s stunning World Cup triumph over France.
Argentina’s heroes returned to Buenos Aires this morning.
And it has been announced there will be a national holiday to toast the triumph.
The celebrations are expected to start at around 3pm UK time.
World Cup transfers – Best XI
The World Cup has thrown up some exciting new stars.
And some could be heading to the Premier League in big-money moves this winter.
The likes of Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea have been linked with some of these big names…

Argentina party on but France get heroes’ welcome
Argentina’s World Cup winners are waking up with sore heads after persistent partying.
And France’s losing finalists raised their arms but barely a smile as they acknowledged a heroes’ welcome back from thousands of fans outside their Paris hotel.
Kylian Mbappe’s hat-trick couldn’t prevent Argentina’s victory but did help him beat Lionel Messi to he highest individual rating for the tournament from France’s L’Equipe.
Messi, meanwhile, restated his desire at the age of 35 to continue playing international football following his two-goal masterclass in the final.
And PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi confirmed he will start talking to the legend about a contract extension.
Bukayo Saka was the only Englishmen to make the best World Cup XI.
Lastly, Argentina’s triumph robbed France of successive World Cup crowns but has so far sparked little transfer interest.
Instead, French replacement striker Marcus Thuram is the finalist at the centre of most of the speculation.
Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham are being linked with the Borussia Monchengladbach ace, 25.
Punter wins £240k after cashing out on France
A gambling genius has won £240,000 – after cashing out his seven-team accumulator moments before France’s World Cup final defeat.
American Daniel Forte had backed Les Bleus to lift the trophy as part of a £21 bet he placed in March.
Forte correctly forecast Manchester City would win the Premier League.
He also tipped AC Milan to win Serie A, and Los Angeles FC to lift the MLS Cup.
Other spot-on selections included Golden State Warriors to win the NBA finals, Colorado Avalanche to win Ice Hockey’s Stanley Cup and Kansas to win the NCAA basketball tournament.
Forte stood to win 557,770 dollars – £457,738 – if France completed the final leg of his acca with odds of 21,453-1.
But in an inspired decision, he opted to cash out for $283,583 – £240,000 – just hours before Didier Deschamps’ men lost on penalties to Argentina.
Which is a result that would have left the Nevada-based punter with nothing.
Forte said: “Thank God I cashed out. I’d be leaving on a stretcher with a heart attack otherwise.
“There was a lot of thought and a lot of talking to my family.
“We decided to take the £283K cashout, and change my life.”
Goodbye smallest World Cup, hello the biggest…
So that’s a wrap on the smallest World Cup in living memory — now we can get ready for the biggest, writes MARTIN LIPTON.
For all the talk of new frontiers and “bringing people together”, Fifa are delighted to say goodbye to Qatar, the controversy and criticism.
Next comes a World Cup in three countries, not one city. In 16 venues, split across four time zones and thousands of miles — rather than the distance between Selhurst Park and Kenilworth Road.

With 48 teams, as opposed to the 32 that has been the norm since 1998. More from Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Even, for the first time, a guaranteed slot for Oceania.
And, almost certainly, a record 104 MATCHES and 33 days as well. It will be 12 groups of four but the real issues are over the next stage.
Qatar was condensed to 29 days, with four matches each day in the opening stage.
But the big European clubs will put huge pressure on Fifa to prevent an expanding tournament lasting any longer than 33 days maximum.
The solution is obvious — up to six games each day in the opening round although that is more possible in 2026 than in any other potential venue for the future.

    Messi wins Beeb award
Lionel Messi has been named BBC Sports Personality’s World Sport Star of the Year.
The Argentina captain scored twice on Sunday as he finally got his hands on the World Cup trophy.
The 35-year-old superstar helped guide his national team past France on penalties.

And the BBC announced they have dedicated the win by naming the diminutive genius as the world star of the year.
The prize is awarded by a panel to the athlete who has “achieved the most notable sporting success” on the globe during that calendar year.
The 2021 winner was Irish jockey Rachael Blackmore.
It is yet another trophy for Messi, who spoke about winning the World Cup after lifting it in Qatar.
He said: “It’s everyone’s dream when they’re little.
“I’ve been lucky enough to achieve everything and what I was missing, I found here.”
Fans hail France stars at Paris hotel
France stars put a brave face on their World Cup final pain as they went on their hotel balcony in Paris to acknowledge a heroes’ welcome home by thousands of fans.
But Kylian Mbappe still couldn’t raise a smile as he waved to flag-waving supporters following an historic hat-trick that couldn’t prevent Argentina lifting the trophy.

Antoine Griezmann, one of the players of the tournament, managed a beaming grin.
And boss Didier Deschamps also produced a rueful half-smile.
Olivier Giroud, who was was subbed before half-time, and Aurelien Tchouameni were also snapped on the balcony applauding fans.

Bukayo only England player in best XI
Notoriously harsh football critics L’Equipe have named England star Bukayo Saka in the World Cup Team of the Tournament… and only gave one player above a SEVEN.
Arsenal ace Saka was one of England‘s shining lights in their World Cup campaign, scoring three goals in their run to the quarter-finals.
Only one player was given above a SEVEN and it wasn’t World Cup-winning captain Lionel Messi, instead Kylian Mbappe.
    Saka rated at 6.5.

    Kyl the mood
Kylian Mbappe and Co returned to France following their World Cup final defeat to Argentina.
And the squad understandably appeared to be in glum spirits after their efforts in a heroic comeback were undone in a dramatic shootout.

The French had found themselves 2-0 down until a late penalty boosted them into life.
Paris Saint-Germain star Mbappe netted a three-minute brace to drag the game into extra-time before becoming just the second player to ever score a hat-trick in a World Cup final.
However, he was unable to do anymore as his nation lost out on penalties to Lionel Messi’s Argentina.
And a day later Didier Deschamps’ unlucky Les Bleus arrived back home to a hero’s welcome. Thousands gathered at Place de la Concorde in Paris to give well wishes to the beaten finalists.
Had France won the Jules Rimet they would have become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to win back-to-back World Cups.
France boss Deschamps would have also become the first manager ever to win it back-to-back. He appeared to be in a better mood than his compatriots as he was spotted smiling on the runway.
Utd and Arsenal gear up for Thur de France
Manchester United have reportedly joined Arsenal and Tottenham in eyeing France striker Marcus Thuram.
Bild even say Borussia Moenchengladbach are looking at potential replacements for the 25-year-old, who came on late in the first half during Argentina’s World Cup final triumph on Sunday.
It’s thought United are unsure whether spend big on a replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo in January – with a loan signing regarded as a strong possibility.
That might be a boost for the Gunners if they decide to bid for Thuram.
Fans puzzled by Aguero’s smoke and winners
Sergio Aguero joined in the jubilant celebrations as Argentina lifted the World Cup, but fans spotted something rather peculiar.
The former Manchester City ace posted a photo in the dressing room with the World Cup trophy in hand while smoking a cigar.

However, fans noticed he had turned around his ID badge and they were left convinced he did so in order to claim it as a World Cup medal.
One user said: “Can’t stop laughing at how he turned his ID badge around so it looks like a medal 😭”
A second user said: “Aguero turned his ID badge around so it looks like a medal. He thinks we can’t see him 😭.”
A third said: “Aguero turnt over his id badge so it looks like a medal☠️”
    “Shameless 😭😭,” said another.
Aguero was not in the Argentina squad after retiring from football in late 2021.
It came after he was diagnosed with heart condition cardiac arrhythmia.
Despite this, it did not stop the 34-year-old from donning a full Argentina kit as he joined the on-pitch celebrations.
Messi gains 21m more Instagram followers
World Cup winner Lionel Messi’s Instagram following soared 20million as stars in Qatar picked up an extra 210m in total.
But despite his problems at club and international level, Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo remains the king online, boosted by a near 19m rise to 519m.
Kylian Mbappe’s final hat-trick for beaten France against Argentina helped his following rise from 73.5m to 83m.
And Richarlison led a string of big increases for Premier League players.
Brazil’s Tottenham striker saw his backing swell from 17.3m to 19.6m. And Manchester United’s Brazilian winger Antony went from 6.2m to 9.3m.
But as a World Cup winner, Aston Villa’s Argentina keeper Emiliano Martinez might be disappointed to ‘only’ jump from 4.3m to 7.5m
AceOdds compiled the list, with spectacular percentage leaps coming from South Korea’s Cho Gue-Sung (8773%), Richarlison (167%) and Argentina duo Julian Alvarez (136%) and Enzo Fernandez (353%)
An extra million followers pulls in £3,000 in social media post sponsorships, so Messi’s heroics earned him an additional £63,000 from the tournament. The PSG attacker, 35, can now demand £1,194,707 in fees for just one Instagram post.

It’s been granted by Roy Keane!
He says Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni deserves to enjoy his moment.
“He’s got them over the line, he’s on the sidelines kicking every ball,” Keane said.
“That emotion that we talk about, it’s vital for this group of players and it got them over the line.
“What brilliant scenes. Dance all you want! They’ll be dancing at the hotel tonight. Dance for the next 10 years! That’s when you dance – when you win it.”

    Game for the ages
It was a World Cup final that won’t be forgotten for years to come.
The storyline before the game surrounded Messi’s battle with Mbappe, and both men duly delivered on the grandest stage of them all.
Messi scored a brace, but Mbappe snatched the Golden Boot away from his PSG team-mate with a hat-trick of his own.
But it was Messi’s night, just like it was Mbappe’s four-and-a-half years ago.

    Emotional Messi
Lionel Messi celebrated his emotional World Cup win with his wife and their children on the Lusail Stadium pitch.
The Argentine captain scored twice and then converted his penalty in the shootout as he finally got his hands on the famous trophy.

But after collecting the Golden Ball for the best player at Qatar 2022 and then lifting the trophy with his team-mates, Messi took time to soak in the moment with his nearest and dearest.
Wife Antonela Roccuzzo and their sons Thiago, ten, Mateo, seven and Ciro, four, as well as his parents and extended family all joined him on the pitch – many of them wearing replica away shirts with his name on the back.
The lads took turns to hold the Golden Ball trophy and their dad’s World Cup winner’s medal.
And Antonela, who seemed to wipe away tears of joy, even got her hands on the main piece of silverware, giving it a kiss and raising it aloft – before the boys did the same.
    Inside Argentina’s celebrations
Argentina wildly celebrated their World Cup victory in the dressing room after the match.
In footage recorded by Argentine legend Sergio Aguero, Lionel Messi and Co could be seen getting the party started immediately after leaving the pitch.

Aguero, 34, was forced to retire with health issues last year – but was invited back into the Argentina camp this week and made to still feel part of the victory.
The former Manchester City star even donned a full kit to get into the spirit of things, and his Instagram Live footage documented Argentina’s brilliant celebrations.
His video began with a moment that will warm City fans’ hearts – as he chatted with current Etihad hero Julian Alvarez.
Aguero then started swigging from a bottle, as the squad danced and sang to Latin music.
After the ex-striker had a chat with Angel Di Maria, he then captured another star on camera sensationally somersaulting into a bin.
Much more singing and dancing was to follow, with tournament sponsors Budweiser leaving plenty of bottles of beer out for the squad.
Messi then sensationally returned to the dressing room clutching the World Cup itself, clambering up on to the table and jumping up and down on it.
Boss Lionel Scaloni then arrived donning a retro Argentina shirt, and was promptly drenched by his players.
Argentina’s sing-song continued as Aguero was gleefully dragged into a Conga.
A $10million dollar check was brought in by an official and held by Messi, who then danced with the huge prize.
Aguero then recorded Messi scrolling through his phone, without his old pal realising.
Stars also sang and danced as they went through the mixed zone after the match.
    Messi replicates Maradona
Lionel Messi replicated Diego Maradona’s pose from 1986 as Argentina finally lifted the World Cup again after a 36-year wait.
Messi drove his country on throughout the tournament and was instrumental in the dramatic final win over France.

The victory sparked mass celebrations in which Messi was lifted above the rest of his team-mates while holding the trophy in the air.
Maradona, who was the star of the World Cup in Mexixo 36 years ago, also held the trophy aloft with the rest of the squad around him when he got his hands on the trophy.
Messi scored seven goals and assisted a further three on La Albiceleste’s way to glory in Qatar.
Maradona was just as influential during Mexico ’86, getting five goals and five assists.
    Messi retirement u-turn
World Cup winner Lionel Messi has confirmed that he will not be retiring from international football.
There had been suggestions that the 35-year-old would retire from international football after the final, but he has shot those rumours down.
He told TyC Sports after the game: “I am not retiring from the Argentina national team.
“I want to continue playing as a champion”.
    Dodgy goal
Lionel Messi’s second goal in the World Cup final should NOT have stood, eagle eyed fans claim.
The Argentine superstar bagged twice on the way to his side winning the trophy he coveted most in a thriller against France.

Messi, 35, put his side back in front in the 108th minute, however, netting the rebound after Hugo Lloris saved Lautaro Martinez’s shot.
It initially appeared that the effort might be ruled out for offside, when the linesman momentarily raised his flag.
But when TV pictures confirmed Martinez had in fact been onside in the build-up, the goal, which was nearly cleared off the line by defender Dayot Upamecano, was allowed to stand.
Watching a wide angle of the goal back, however, some fans believe that it should have been chalked off.
In a snap posted to Twitter, two Argentina substitutes could be seen on the pitch as Messi took the shot.
Their hasty celebrations meant that their side had 13 players on the field.
    Ibrahimovic unimpressed
Fans all said the same thing as Zlatan Ibrahimovic reacted to Lionel Messi winning the World Cup.
The Swedish giant, 41, was in the stands of the Lusail Stadium as Argentina eventually beat France in a truly epic final.

Argentina led 2-0 and 3-2 before Messi at long last got his hands on the World Cup trophy after Gonzalo Montiel slotted the winning penalty into the back of the net.
But as Messi fell to his knees in joyful celebration, one man looked rather unimpressed.
Ibrahimovic remained stoney-faced with his wife Helena Seger.
That is despite his former team-mate finally getting his hands on the one trophy that eluded him.
    Argie fans go wild
Jubilant Argentina fans went wild today as the country celebrated its first World Cup win for 36 years.
Thousands poured into the streets of Buenos Aires to watch Argentina take the trophy after a nerve-shredding final.

Joyous footage showed thousands of euphoric fans leaping into the air and waving flags as a penalty shoot-out saw Argentina’s Gonzalo Montiel score the winner.
Fans were seen weeping with joy after Argentina beat France 4-2 in Qatar on penalties.
It’s the first World Cup win for Argentina in 36 years.
Hundreds of fans gathered to watch the match at the former home of the late football star Diego Maradona – and dived into the pool after the final whistle.
    Martinez’s x-rated act
Emiliano Martinez has divided opinion with his X-rated celebration after winning the Golden Glove.
The Aston Villa goalkeeper put in an outstanding performance in the World Cup final as Argentina beat France 3-3 (4-2 on penalties).

He was awarded the individual accolade for being the best goalkeeper in the tournament and when he was handed the trophy, Martinez reacted in an unique way.
The 30-year-old shook hands with Fifa representatives, including Gianni Infantino, before holding the gold award in front of his private area while leaning back and pulling an odd face.
Martinez shocked fans worldwide, one Tweeted: “Never had Martinez using the Golden Glove trophy as a sex toy on my World Cup final bingo card.”
A second commented: “What on Earth was he thinking?”
    Three stars
Argentina have revealed their new badge for the national football side after winning their third World Cup trophy.
The new badge includes a third star representing the triumph at the tournament in Qatar.

Argentina won the World Cup after a thrilling clash against France.
The two sides battled to a 2-2 draw after 90 minutes and then in extra time both scored to take the game to penalties.
Argentina went perfect in the shootout with Gonzalo Montiel scoring the decisive penalty.
Every nation that has won a World Cup is able to put a star above its badge as a nod to the win.
    Messi’s a traditionalist
Lionel Messi wore a traditional Arab robe as he lifted the World Cup trophy this evening.
The Argentine superstar finally got his hands on the cup he coveted most after a thrilling match against previous world champions France.

After a stunning 3-3 draw, Argentina prevailed 4-2 on penalties following Emi Martinez’s theatrics.
A lengthy ceremony followed, with Messi being awarded the Golden Ball award for best player of the tournament.
Following medal hand-outs for both teams, the 35-year-old finally had an opportunity to lift the trophy.
Just before he did so, he was gifted a traditional Arab robe by the Emir of Qatar while standing next to Fifa president Gianni Infantino.
    Mbappe steals Golden Boot
Kylian Mbappe was inconsolable on the France bench as he watched Lionel Messi lift the World Cup trophy.
The French superstar became the first player since Sir Geoff Hurst to score a hat-trick in the biggest game in football with a stunning treble against Argentina.

He then netted his penalty in a dramatic shootout – only to see rival keeper Emiliano Martinez save twice to condemn the reining champions to defeat after a 3-3 draw.
Mbappe, 23, went into the showpiece in Qatar level with Paris Saint-Germain, and Argentina talisman, Lionel Messi, on five goals in the tournament.
Messi himself had netted twice in the breathtaking final – making it seven goals a piece – when Mbappe was presented an opportunity to level things up in the 118th minute.
And he held his nerve under the highest of pressure to clinch the Golden Boot, and keep his nation’s dreams alive.

    Cheeky Messi
Lionel Messi has finally got his hands on the coveted prize.
Well, not quite. The Argentinian couldn’t help but give the trophy a quick kiss as he went up to the podium to collect his Golden Ball trophy for tournament’s best player.

Minutes later, he would be able to lift it for real with his team-mates.
But it was this cheeky interchange that showed exactly what it meant to him.
    Martinez dance
Emi Martinez’s “s***house” theatrics helped Argentina beat France on penalties in the World Cup final.
The thrilling clash went to spot kicks after a pulsating 3-3 draw in Qatar.

The shimmying, swaggering Aston Villa goalkeeper saved Kingsley Coman’s spot kick.
He then won a battle of mind games with Aurelien Tchouameni to put Argentina close to the finishing line.
Tchouameni, 22, was made to wait an age to take his penalty after Martinez threw the ball away.
The referee booked the stopper for his unsportsmanlike conduct – but the damage had been done.
The French midfielder missed the target altogether, with Martinez performing a dance in celebration.
    Topless Argie fan
Fans are convinced that they spotted a topless Argentina fan celebrating the team’s World Cup win.
After Gonzalo Montiel’s decisive penalty kick, the TV cameras panned to the jubilant Argentina fans.

Viewers are sure that they spotted one Argentina supporter celebrating with her shirt off.
One blonde fan can be spotted with her shirt in hand while appearing to be wearing nothing else on her torso.
Fans took to social media to discuss the sighting as one said: “I spotted her, very brave! she’ll be arrested over there if she’s not careful…”
A second added: “Caught live on TV”.
