    Steve Cooper reacts
Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper admitted the team needs to learn from its mistakes after the loss to Manchester United.
Cooper told Amazon Prime: “It was always going to be really tough. We knew the game was going to look as it did, in terms of territory and possession.
“The goals were a killer in terms of players not sticking to their responsibilities. I wouldn’t say we gifted them the goals, but it was really frustrating, and we could have backed ourselves a bit more [between the lines].
“At this level, you have to make the most of those situations. They were better than us. But we never gave up and had some good territory ourselves in the second half, but didn’t have belief.
“I’m never one for criticising individuals publicly but there are a couple of people who didn’t stick to their job. United deserved to win, but we have to look at ourselves and we could have been so much better as a team”

    Ten Hag on transfers
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag admitted the club is still looking for a striker in the January transfer window after missing out on Cody Gakpo, who joined Liverpool.
Ten Hag told Amazon Prime: “We are always in the market. We do what we can.
“I don’t talk about individual cases. We are looking for a striker, it would be good with so many games coming.
“We want to stay in all the leagues we are in. So you need numbers”

    Erik ten Hag speaks
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag praised Casemiro’s impact against Nottingham Forest.
Ten Hag told Amazon Prime: “It is a pleasure to work with Casemiro. Everyone sees how important his role is. His level is huge.
“The players grow in the season. Our players performed really well in the World Cup, and now they continue. Stay at that level, keep going, and grow from game to game.
“We have to score more goals. We created so many chances, it took us just before the end to score the third goal. We have to end the game earlier. Life would be more easy, and we can save more energy, it is better for everyone. We have a lot of players who can score goals, but we have to be ruthless”

    Marcus Rashford speaks
Manchester United star Marcus Rashford stood out against Nottingham Forest and revealed he is planning to score more goals than he ever did in a single season.
Rashford told Amazon Prime: “I’m enjoying it. We’re winning a lot more football games, and the level of play has been higher. I hope we can keep kicking on.
“It’s a different mindset to last season, a different team playing different football. We should be scoring more goals and winning more games.
“It was a different mindset [last season] coming off the bench, worrying about making an impact.
“Every forward always has a number they want to try to reach, and mine is to score more than I ever have before in a season. I think that’s 22 or 23”

    World Cup heros
Mateo Kovacic and Hakim Ziyech are unavailable for Chelsea today.
This is due to their participation in the World Cup, where they faced off in the third place play-off.
Croatia came out on top that day but both nations won the heart of the world for their impressive displays at the tournament.
Graham Potter is yet to confirm when the duo will return.
    Last time they faced
Bournemouth have a decent record against Chelsea in recent seasons.
Last time out they drew 2-2 in 2020 as Bournemouth played host
And when the Cherries visited Stamford Bridge in 2019, they won 1-0.
The most impressive clash between the two? Bournemouth thrashed Chelsea 4-0 in January of 2019, when Maurizio Sarri saw the pressure pile on him.
The last time they lost to the Blues was back in 2018.
Can they pull off an upset again here?
    What it means
With Fulham’s victory over Crystal Palace seeing them leapfrog their neighbours Chelsea, the Blues can take back 8th position with a win today.
This would put them six behind Tottenham Hotspur in 4th and a run of victories would help Graham Potter’s side in their race for the top 4.
For Bournemouth, a win would see them go 12th and six points clear of the drop.
It’s all to play for today.
    Forgotten man
Denis Zakaria has been handed few opportunities since his summer loan move to Chelsea.
The Swiss international also played a bit-part role at the World Cup for his national team as they crashed out to Portugal in the last-16.
Denis Zakaria could start for ChelseaCredit: Getty
He could be in line for a rare start today with Mateo Kovacic and N’Golo Kante unavailable.
Zakaria impressed in his last appearance for the Blues, so can he do it again if selected?
    Reece’s return?
Reports are circulating Twitter, believing that Reece James is set for his Chelsea return this afternoon.
If true, this will be a HUGE boost for the Blues, who rely heavily on James for both his defensive and attacking output.
The England international missed the World Cup after an injury blow but will have his eyes firmly on the Premier League and improving Chelsea’s form this winter.
    Pot to do better
Graham Potter knows more than anyone that his side must improve this season if they are to retain their place in the Champions League.
Despite starting off well as Chelsea boss, Potter’s men picked up a handful of injuries and their form dipped going into November.
The World Cup break allowed them to regroup and a warm weather training camp in Abu Dhabi gave his side the chance to work on their tactics.
He’ll be hoping for three points today to ease some of the pressure on him.
    Bourne to be wild
Gary O’Neil has proven that he has what it takes to coach at the top level, holding an impressive record as Bournemouth manager.
This saw him become the permanent head coach during the World Cup break and he will now be looking to pull off survival with his side.
They face a tough task today, but the Cherries have an impressive record over Chelsea in recent seasons.
Welcome back Chelsea and Bournemouth fans!
The Premier League is back and up next, Chelsea vs Bournemouth!
World Cup action saw a welcome break for Graham Potter’s side, who were in miserable form.
But with the return of the Premier League, they will be hoping to pick up some wins as they look to make the top four.
Bournemouth’s goal remains the same – survive relegation.
It remains to be seen as to whether the Cherries can pull this off as they face Chelsea TODAY.

    That’s all from us
That is all from us tonight on an action packed night of Premier League football, which saw Arsenal overcome an early goal to beat West Ham 3-1, and move seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table.
Be sure to join us again tomorrow for coverage of Chelsea vs Bournemouth, as well as checking out the breaking news, that Cody Gakpo has just signed for Liverpool from PSV.
Thank you as always for reading, it has been a pleasure, and I hope to see you again soon.
    Good night!
    Odegaard the Magista
Wow, what a performance that was from Martin Odegaard.
When Real Madrid signed him as a 16-year-old, many raised their eyebrows, but they could obviously see the potential that this man has in his wand of a left foot from a young age.
Two assists, both of a high class, which topped off a performance of the ages from the Norweigan.
It is time to give him his flowers, as he has been the best midfielder in the Premier League so far this season, alongside Kevin De Bruyne.
And for those of you reading who enjoy the somewhat finer moments on a football pitch, the romantics if you will, please go and watch the highlights of this game.
Hopefully they include his magical nutmeg on Lucas Paqueta, a quaint back-heel through the Brazilian’s legs, as he served up some Samba Sauce with an ice cold Norweigan chill.
He is a really wonderful footballer, and for that reason, gets the SunSport man of the match award.

    ‘We’re top of the league’
Was the chant ringing around The Emirates at full-time, and they have plenty of reason to celebrate after they overcame conceding an early goal to win 3-1 at home on Boxing Day.
Arsenal looked a little rusty to begin with, as William Saliba scythed down Jarrod Bowen inside the box to give the visitors an early penalty.
That penalty was dispatched by Said Benrahma, and celebrated in typically cool fashion.
But the celebrations didn’t last too long, as early in the second half Bukayo Saka continued his brilliant season dispatching a mishit shot from Odegaard into the bottom left corner.
Martinelli then gave the hosts the lead, with left footed, low driven shot past Fabianski.
It was Nketiah who scored the pick of the bunch, spinning Thilo Kehrer, and finishing off an excellent team goal that was typical Arsenal.
A great result and a great night for The Gunners, who will have made Arsene Wenger proud with that showing.

    FT. Arsenal 3-1 West Ham
The referee calls the game to a close just after Mohammed Elneny gets on the pitch for Thomas Partey.
Seven points clear of Newcastle, and eight of Man City as it stands.
A good night for The Gunners in the end!
    90. Arsenal 3-1 West Ham
The fourth official has announced that there will be four minutes of added time at the end of the second half.
    90. Arsenal 3-1 West Ham
Fabio Vieira comes on in replacement of Martinelli, the Brazilian was brilliant once more tonight…
    88. Arsenal 3-1 West Ham
Mubama comes on for West Ham in replacement of Antonio.
Odegaard ends Paqueta’s career with a nutmeg, and gets the crowd on their feet in the process.
    86. Arsenal 3-1 West Ham
Arsenal win a corner which is crossed in well by Saka towards Saliba, but the Frenchman heads over the bar.
    84. Arsenal 3-1 West Ham
Arsenal come forward again with Odegaard and Saka.
The brilliant English winner looks to provide for Xhaka in the middle, but the cross is cut out.
    82. Arsenal 3-1 West Ham
Odegaard has a go from distance, but that is not his finest work.
Aside from that, the Norweigan has been unbelievable today, and is definitely the man of the match for me today.
    78. Arsenal 3-1 West Ham
A change for West Ham, as Pablo Fornals replaces Thomas Soucek.
    76. Arsenal 3-1 West Ham
Arsenal win a free-kick, which is being lined up by Granit Xhaka from distance.
It is blocked and Zinchenko does really well to win the ball back for his team.
    74. Arsenal 3-1 West Ham
Zinchenko replaces Kieran Tierney at left back.
Arsenal will be pleased to have him back, as the Ukrainian provides such quality and utility in the squad.
    72. Arsenal 3-1 West Ham
That is exquisite, and it is textbook Arsenal.
Wenger will be proud in the crowd.
They pass the ball around the edge of the box, before finding the magical feet of Martin Odegaard, who threads a ball through to Eddie Nketiah.
It is all about him, as he opens his body up and turns the defender before perfectly finishing his shot into the bottom left corner.
    Wow.
    70. Arsenal 3-1 West Ham
    What a goal.
    What.
    A.
    Goal.
    Eddie Nketiah.
    68. Arsenal 2-1 West Ham
The corner comes to nothing, before Thilo Kehrer lashes a shot over the bar from distance.
He was trying to re-create something from David Luiz’s catalogue, but instead re-created something from mine…
    66. Arsenal 2-1 West Ham
West Ham counter, and Antonio does well to get the better of Tierney initially, but the Scot does brilliantly to track back and stop the delivery from the Jamaican striker.
    Corner for West Ham.
    64. Arsenal 2-1 West Ham
Arsenal win a free-kick in the attacking third, set to be whipped in by Odegaard’s wand of a left boot.
It is well cleared by the West Ham defence.
    62. Arsenal 2-1 West Ham
Arsenal try to come forward again, and are being roared on by the home supporters now.
Tierney’s low cross is cut out by the West Ham defence.
    60. Arsenal 2-1 West Ham
It is a great left-footed finish by the brilliant Brazilian, who slots it past Fabianski at the near post.
It was set up for him nicely by Granit Xhaka.
    58. Arsenal 2-1 West Ham
It’s two! They are back, Gabriel Martinelli!
    55. Arsenal 1-1 West Ham
That is wonderful by Bukayo Saka!
A mishit shot from the edge of the area from Martin Odegaard falls at the feet of Saka, who showed great awareness to take a touch and dispatch the shot calmly into the bottom corner.
    54. Arsenal 1-1 West Ham
Goal for Arsenal, Bukayo Saka! Assisted by Martin Odegaard!
    52. Arsenal 0-1 West Ham
Kieran Tierney gives away a foul on Jarrod Bowen, before losing an aerial duel to him and going down holding his face.
Weak from the Scottish full-back, and Arteta is screaming for a yellow that is never going to happen.
    48. Arsenal 0-1 West Ham
Chance for Arsenal, but for a great save by Fabianski.
Partey has a go from the edge of the box, but Fabianski gets down to his left hand side and makes a great stop to deny him.

Everton 1 Wolves 2: Frank Lampard on brink of axe and under huge pressure after late Rayan Ait-Nouri winner

THE GHOST of Christmas past flitted around Goodison and if Frank Lampard didn’t feel the hairs rise on the back of his neck he should have done.He got the perfect start with Yerry Mina claiming his first Premier League goal in exactly 105 weeks.

Daniel Podence equalised to set-up a big win for WolvesCredit: Reuters
But it was not enough for his nerve–wracked side to hold onto.
Or disguise the very real fear of relegation stalking the old place – with the Blues boss now under ever–increasing pressure.
For Daniel Podence grabbed an equaliser and in the fifth minute of time added as the seconds ticked down at the end Rayan Ait-Nouri plundered a precious winner for new Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui.
Blues boos thundered across the pitch – not for the first time – as Lampard shook his head in near–despair.
For if ever there was a game that Lampard needed to win with the odds of him being the next Premier League boss to be dumped, it was this one.
This time last year was when it all began unravelling for the former Derby County and Chelsea boss’ despised predecessor Rafa Benitez.
By January 18th he was gone following a 2–1 defeat at Norwich.
Lampard’s 40th game in charge will be on New Year’s Eve at the Etihad.

After this stumbling performance, good luck with that one, Frank after five defeats on the bounce.
Meanwhile, Lopetegui also looked stunned before pumping the air with his fists as the reality of victory dawned on him.
He had even become the first Molineux manager to win his first top-flight game since John Barnwell.
He saw his new charges live through a succession of mistakes and grow stronger.
And he led by example on the touchline, too, seemingly immune to the bitter wind, wearing only a black jersey.
Lampard is very much feeling the chill of his situation and he, like his players, is running on empty.
That had become evident even before the half-time sound system blasted out that we were simply having a wonderful Christmas time.
But neither Lampard nor Lopetegui experienced anything like Paul McCartney’s festive sentiments for this was a clash that ensured the pantomime season was in full swing.
Lampard especially will have heard a different sort of mood music at the end of a 45 minutes that was simply a catalogue of errors – his team being booed off.
Travelling Wolves fans might have done the same but they reserved that sentiment for they knew their team had already dodged several bullets.
The mistakes began in the 7th minute, the diminutive Hugo Bueno charged with marking Mina.
No contest. Dwight McNeil swung in a corner from the right and central defender Mina, only in because of Connor Coady’s enforced absence as he is on loan from Wolves, shrugged off Bueno to head home from a dozen yards.
By then England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford had contributed to the tension that gripped Goodison and the home support especially with two terrible clearances.
Diego Costa reverted to type with a signature charge on Mina before falling all over him WWE–style.
That typically over–aggressive challenge by the former Chelsea warlord did, however, rev up his team-mates once the handbags had been put away again.
Cue another unforced error this time from Nathan Patterson in the 22nd minute who stopped, claiming offside against Daniel Podence.
The Portuguese frontman was definitely onside at the back post to flick home the kind of gentle lob from Joao Moutinho that should have easily been swept away.
Joe Hodge then took centre stage as the villain.
His centre line attempt at a long pass back to Jose Sa was, frankly, laughable.
But Neal Maupay, again deputising for No1 Toffees striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin who, again after months of injury trouble was deemed unfit with knee problems, reacted sloppily.
His charge forward lacked pace and conviction and goalkeeper Sa charged far quicker off his line to scythe to safety.
It only got worse for Lampard.
Nathan Collins deflected Idrissa Gueye’s pass straight into the path of Anthony Gordon.
But for a homegrown winger who is about to sign a thumping new contract, who was a £45million summer target of Chelsea the finish was bang average.
Sa threw himself low and left and the majority within Goodison groaned.
Likewise, after another limp attempt from Maupay after Collins once more took a walk in blunder land.
But the Frenchman brought in by Lampard for £15m from Brighton at the start of the season completely fluffed his lines, Sa easily collecting the weak shot.
Ait–Nouri found it much easier to put away his last–gasp opportunity after fellow sub Adama Traore had moved forward to despatch the crucial pass.
    Read More on The Sun
And the tick of the clock that may well be sounding out the last days of Lampard in charge only got louder.

Brentford 2 Tottenham 2: Harry Kane scores on comeback from World Cup heartbreak with England as Prem returns with bang

THIS was a short story of two strikers going some way to exorcising their respective World Cup demons.Harry Kane may never really get over ballooning that penalty against France in England’s quarter-final defeat.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Harry Kane netted in Spurs’ fightbackCredit: Reuters
Ivan Toney was back on the scoresheet againCredit: Reuters
But instantly getting back on the horse here with an instinctive header to spark Spurs’ comeback will have helped ease the pain.
Ivan Toney’s problems could well amount to much more than being cruelly left out of Gareth Southgate’s Qatar party, given his FA charge for 262 alleged breaches of betting regulations.
If found guilty he could face a long ban.
Yet bigger teams may well still fancy a punt on the 26-year-old once the saga is put behind him because he is such a good player, as he proved again here.
After netting a double in the Bees’ famous win at Manchester City before the mid-season break, he was on the scoresheet again here, adding to Vitaly Janelt’s opener.
Thomas Frank looked to be cruising to another big-boy scalp two days after signing a fresh five-year deal as Brentford boss.
But Kane’s record TENTH Premier League goal on Boxing Day got Antonio Conte’s men back in it.
Then Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg set up a thrilling finish with a well-taken leveller as Tottenham once again fought back from falling behind.

It may be six weeks on from their last competitive game – a 4-3 feast-for-the-fans victory over Leeds – but little seems to have changed when it comes to Spurs’ slow starts.
This was the NINTH match in a row they conceded the first goal and the fifth on the trot they were trailing at the break.
Yet Conte’s men did not start too badly and Kane looked like a man on a mission to impress.
When Son Heung-min was chopped down by Ben Mee on the edge of the area, Kane instantly grabbed the ball for the free-kick.
That was despite failing to convert his previous 48 free-kick attempts in a surprisingly poor run for the great striker.
That was extended to 49 here, although to be fair it was much better than his last set-piece – that skied spot-kick against the Les Bleus – and may well have been going in were it not for it nicking the edge of the wall.
Then Brentford made the breakthrough, almost out of nothing.
Toney sparked it with a clever flicked header down the left to Bryan Mbeumo, whose floated cross was met by Mathias Jensen.
The Dane’s shot was not particularly powerful.
But Fraser Forster – starting ahead of defeated finalist Hugo Lloris, who only returned to Spurs training on Christmas Day – was weak with his attempted save, which rebounded to Janelt who could not miss.

Toney had the ball in the net just before the break, cleanly rounding Forster and converting, but it was ruled out for offside.
He only had to wait nine minutes after the interval to notch though for a goal Eric Dier will not want to watch back.
The England defender grimaced as he sliced a routine clearance out for a corner.
Christian Norgaard flicked on the resulting set-piece at the near post and there was Toney to fire in the loose ball from six yards.
Given what both Kane and Toney have been through of late, they had to expect a bit of taunting from the crowd.
So it came when a section of the home support cruelly told Kane he had “let his country down”.
That sparked boos from the travelling fans, who then asked Toney “What are the odds?” and informed the ex-Newcastle man he was “getting sacked in the morning”.
Ivan Perisic was a constant threat, one week after the World Cup ended
Conte was staring down the barrel at a fourth defeat in six league games.
But then again, his side can never be written off as they have so often dug themselves out of holes this season.
So it proved again, with Kane grabbing one back on 65 minutes.
Clement Lenglet fired in a brilliant cross but the header was even better.
England’s joint-record scorer fought off Mee and guided the ball back towards the far corner, giving David Raya no chance whatsoever.
It clinched him yet another record by reaching double figures for Boxing Day Premier League goal strikes and moved him to within four of Jimmy Greaves unbeaten haul of 266 Spurs goals.
Six minutes later the scores were level thanks to Hojbjerg’s fifth of the season.
Kane, Hojbjerg and Dejan Kulusevski played a neat move on the edge of Brentford’s box before the latter teed up Hojbjerg to lash into the corner.
Toney was hoping he would have a penalty to win it late on when Mbeumo went down in the box.
But referee David Coote spotted the Frenchman’s shocking dive and rightly awarded a free-kick as well as a yellow card.
Comeback man Kane almost won it at the death when heading against the crossbar from another Lenglet delivery.
In the end the shares were spoiled – with Kane and Toney picking up as if nothing had happened over the last 44 days.
