    That’s all from the Emirates
It was a night that promised much, but in the end all we got was a bucketload of yellow cards, a black and white wall, and 60,000 faces red with fury.
But Arsenal still have plenty to smile about at the start of 2023 as they lead the Premier League by eight points.
And Newcastle can be more than happy with life as they sit in the Champions League spots with a defence that looks unbreakable right now.
There’s more football to come tomorrow with four more top-flight fixtures, and then on Thursday, it’s the big one when Chelsea host Manchester City.
Until then, thank you and goodnight.
    Arsenal extend lead to eight
So Arsenal do extend their lead at the top of the Premier League, but not to the 10 points that they had dreamed of.
Instead, the Gunners lead is eight with second-placed Manchester City due to play at Chelsea on Thursday.
Newcastle remain third, but only on goal difference now after Manchester United comfortably beat Bournemouth.
Elsewhere, there were away wins this evening for high-flyers Brighton and Fulham.

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle
    Everton 1-4 Brighton
    Leicester 0-1 Fulham
    Manchester United 3-0 Bournemouth

    Arteta rues two ‘scandalous’ decisions
Mikel Arteta has pulled no punches in his post-match interview.
The Arsenal boss is livid that his side didn’t receive a penalty either for Dan Burn’s pull on Gabriel, or the late handball from Jacob Murphy.
There were two scandalous penalty decisions. I don’t know [why VAR did not overturn them]. They are both penalties.Mikel ArtetaSky Sports

    Magpies flying into new year
While one run may have come to an end – Arsenal’s winning streak at home – Newcastle go from strength to strength.
The Toon Army are now unbeaten in 15 games in all competitions under Eddie Howe.

    Gunners Burn-ed by penalty call
Arsenal players were furious when they weren’t awarded a penalty deep in stoppage time for an alleged handball against Jacob Murphy.
It would have been a harsh decision, but the same couldn’t be said about an incident earlier in the second half.
In defending a free-kick into the box, Dan Burn clearly pulled the shirt of Gabriel, dragging him to the floor and denying him from reaching the ball.
The video officials apparently looked at the incident, but didn’t feel there was enough evidence to overturn the referee’s on-field decision.
    Baffling.

    Tight Toon keep it clean
After another shut-out on the road, it’s now eight hours and 45 minutes since Newcastle last conceded a goal.
Nick Pope’s six successive clean sheets are the club’s best defensive showing in 40 years, and is clearly the base upon which Eddie Howe is building success.

    Match stats from the Emirates
Arsenal racked up two-thirds of possession and 17 attempts at goal, but still rarely troubled Nick Pope in the Newcastle goal, who made just a few saves throughout the 90 minutes.

Full time – Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle
Thomas Party lashes one final volley over the crossbar, and Andy Madley calls time on this clash in the capital.
Arsenal huffed and puffed throughout, but couldn’t break down the most stubborn and resilient Newcastle United outfit.
The closest either side came were headers from almost the exact same spot of the field, but Joelinton’s flew over in the first half while Gabriel Martinelli’s flashed wide.
There were very late claims for an Arsenal penalty when the ball clipped Jacob Murphy’s hand, but the Toon survived for another clean sheet that ended the Gunners’ winning streak.
    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle
90+5. Huge, HUGE appeals for an Arsenal penalty!
Xhaka tricks his way to the touchline, and clips in a cross that does strike the arm of Murphy.
Andy Madley waves play-on, and the Arsenal players are furious.
    The Arsenal manager is furious.
    The Arsenal fans are furious.
VAR review the incident, but quickly back the referee in his decision.
It would have a been a very harsh decision to give it.

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle
90+3. Newcastle win a corner now, but don’t overly commit.
Joelinton does get on the end of it, but doesn’t appear overly concerned with going for goal.
    Arsenal eventually clear their lines.
    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle
90+2. Guimaraes wins a throw-in, down in front of the shirtless Newcastle fans, who go absolutely berserk.
The Brazilian responds in kind, urging the travelling supporters for one more push.
    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle
    90. The fourth official holds up the board to signal five minutes additional time.
Mikel Arteta is livid, he believes it should be much more.
    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle
    88. Nketiah! Great save by Pope!
The Newcastle goalkeeper uses his feet expertly to deny the Arsenal striker after a slick touch and strike inside the penalty area.
Seconds later, there are handball appeals for a penalty, but Andy Madley waves them away.

Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle – Newcastle substitution
    86. Former Arsenal man Joe Willock has run himself into the ground, and he’s replaced for the final stages by Allan Saint-Maximin.
    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle
    84. Xhaka is inches away from converting Odegaard’s sidefooted cross-shot inside the box.
The unmarked Swiss midfielder was caught flat-footed as the ball whizzed in his direction.
    A lucky let-off for Newcastle
    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle
    82. Inside the final ten minutes now, and time is fast ticking away.
There’s no sign of Arsenal settling for a point, however, and now Newcastle have begun having a go.
    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle
    80. Martinelli! Just wide!
The Brazilian gets up at the near post to meet the latest corner, this time from the right, and glances a lovely header inches beyond the frame of the goal.
That’s the closest the Gunners have come tonight!

    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle
    79. It’s the least convincing Newcastle have been in defending an Arsenal corner as Pope flaps a punch at Martinelli’s delivery.
Thankfully for the England stopper, there is nobody in red to take advantage.
    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle
    77. Xhaka and Martinelli combine just inside the 18-yard box in order for the latter to cross, but the chipped centre is comfortably claimed by Pope.
The Newcastle keeper is closing in on a sixth successive clean sheet.
Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle – Arsenal substitution
    75. A first change for the Gunners.
Ben White makes way, and Takehiro Tomiyasu takes over at right-back.
    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle
    74. A rare break from Newcastle, and they win a corner of their own off Zinchenko.
Trippier delivers towards Schar, who gets up highest but concedes a free-kick the process.
    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle
    72. No joy for Arsenal from the set-piece.
If a winning goal is to come, it’s unlikely to arrive via a dead ball given Newcastle’s defensive expertise.
    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle
    71. A rare glimpse of Martinelli magic.
The Brazilian drives at Trippier, but can’t get his cross-shot beyond him and Arsenal have another corner.
    Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle
    70. Into the final 20 minutes, this remains on a knife edge.
Albeit a knife with a very blunt edge.
Arsenal 0-0 Newcastle – Newcastle double substitution
    68. Callum Wilson has run his race on his return to fitness.
The striker will depart along with Miguel Almiron with Chris Wood and Jacob Murphy on in their place.

    New Year, New Chelsea?
Start as you mean to go on, that’s what they say.
However, Chelsea fans have spent the last few new years hoping that’s not the case.
In fact, the Blues have not won their first league game in any of the last six calendar years, drawing four and losing two.
The London club last had a longer winless run in their opening match of the year between 1929 and 1938 when going ten without success.
    Azpilicueta in for injured James
It’s just one change for Chelsea and Graham Potter, and it’s an unfortunate one.
Reece James hobbled off 50 minutes into his return against Bournemouth on Tuesday, and faces another four weeks on the sidelines.
In his place comes the experienced Cesar Azpilicueta, who slots in at right-back and takes the captain’s armband from Jorginho.
Kai Havertz continues in attack after impressing against Bournemouth last time out.

    Chelsea (4-3-3): 1 Kepa; 28 Azpilicueta, 25 Koulibaly, 6 Thiago Silva, 32 Cucurella; 20 Zakaria, 5 Jorginho, 19 Mount; 17 Sterling, 29 Havertz, 10 Pulisic
    Subs: 13 Bettinelli, 8 Kovacic, 9 Aubameyang, 14 Chalobah, 22 Ziyech, 23 Gallagher, 30 Chukwuemeka, 56 Hutchinson, 67 Hall

    Henderson returns for Nottingham Forest
Steve Cooper makes two changes to his Nottingham Forest side that huffed and puffed at Manchester United to no avail on Tuesday.
Dean Henderson is back between the sticks – replacing Wayne Hennessey – after he was ineligible to face his parent club at Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, Jesse Lingard limped off against his former side last time out, and has not recovered in time to start today.
Instead, the line is lead by Taiwo Awoniyi at the top of Forest’s 4-3-3 formation; Joe Worrall has the captain’s armband.

    Nott’m Forest (4-3-3): 1 Henderson; 24 Aurier, 4 Worrall, 30 Boly, 32 Lodi; 22 Yates, 23 Freuler, 5 Mangala; 20 Johnson, 9 Awoniyi, 10 Gibbs-White
    Subs: 13 Hennessey, 3 Cook, 7 Williams, 8 Colback, 14 O’Brien, 15 Toffolo, 16 Surridge, 25 Dennis, 26 McKenna

    Magnificent seven for Blues
This afternoon’s meeting between Nottingham Forest and Chelsea will be their first in the league since they were paired together in the Premier League back in 1998-99.
However, they did meet on five occasions in cup competitions in the 25 years since while Forest were languishing in the Football League.
Each of those cup ties were staged at Stamford Bridge, helping the Blues to rack up a seven-game winning streak against the East Midlanders.

Chelsea 2-0 Nott’m Forest (FA Cup, Jan 2020)
Chelsea 2-0 Nott’m Forest (FA Cup, Jan 2019)
Chelsea 5-1 Nott’m Forest (League Cup, Sept 2017)
Chelsea 3-0 Nott’m Forest (FA Cup, Jan 2007)
Chelsea 2-0 Nott’m Forest (FA Cup, Jan 2000)
Nott’m Forest 1-3 Chelsea (Premier League, Feb 1999)
Chelsea 2-1 Nott’m Forest (Premier League, Sept 1998)

    Forest 5/1 for the win
If Nottingham Forest are going to survive in the Premier League, then their home form is going to be crucial during the run-in. They’ve already beaten West Ham, Liverpool and Crystal Palace at the City Ground, and the bookies have made them an attractive 5/1 to add Chelsea to the list.

    Nott’m Forest win 5/1
    Draw 29/10
    Chelsea win 6/10

Odds from Betfair correct at the time of post publication.
    Happy New Year from Nottingham
Good afternoon and welcome to live Premier League football on the first day of 2023 with our coverage of Nottingham Forest versus Chelsea from the City Ground.

There is more football to come from us tomorrow, but if you haven’t quite got today’s footballing fix, check out the player ratings from this game here…
Thank you as always for reading, and for all of your support this year.
Have a great night, and see you next year!
    Match stats
These are the statistics for the game which saw Arsenal go seven points clear at the top of the Premier League.
As you can see, it was Brighton who dominated possession, though that was not reflected in the scoreline.
Arsenal ultimately were the better side, with more quality, and they really made that count in the final third in particular.
Arsenal tonight showed that they aren’t just a side that dominates the ball and play luxury football, but that they can also win the games that they don’t necessarily dominate.
The full-time stats as Arsenal beat Brighton by four goals to two.
    One last 2022 round-up
Here is the round-up for the final batch of games that took place in the Premier League in 2022.

    West Ham 0-2 Brentford
    Liverpool 2-1 Leicester
    Wolves 0-1 Manchester United
    Fulham 2-1 Southampton
    Bournemouth 0-2 Crystal Palace
    Newcastle United 0-0 Leeds United
    Manchester City 1-1 Everton
    Brighton 2-4 Arsenal

You will notice that four teams are missing from this round of games, and that is because we have two games taking place tomorrow, on New Years Day.
    Those games are as follows:

    Nottingham Forest vs Chelsea
    Tottenham Hotspur vs Aston Villa

    Man of the Match
There can only be one man, and it is him again, Martin Odegaard.
This man is a master in midfield and he is starting to prove why Real Madrid took a punt on him aged just 16.
His goal was something of a miss-hit volley into the ground, but his assist for Martinelli was nothing off the sort.
It will likely go down as assist of the season, and it is definitely going to take some beating if it doesn’t win it.
The ball was played to him just inside his own half, and with one sweeping movement he played an inch perfect ball to the feet of Martinelli, who strode through on goal before tapping home.
He has been one-of, if not the best midfielder in the Premier League this season, and that performance is one to add to his catalogue of great showings…
    Seven clear for New Year
On a day where others slipped up, Arsenal moved seven points clear at the top of the Premier League.
That was thanks to goals from four different scorers in Eddie Nketiah, Bukayo Saka, Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard.
The pick of the bunch was scored by the Brazilian Martinelli, who was played through on goal in glorious fashion by Martin Odegaard.
It was almost a nervy finish for The Gunners, as Karou Mitoma thought he had a brace in the 88th minute, only for it to be ruled out by VAR.
That said, it was not meant to be for The Seagulls, and Arsenal fans will be starting to believe that they can really do it.
We suspect they will be celebrating extra-hard tonight…

    90+6. Brighton 2-4 Arsenal
The referee blows the full time whistle, and Arsenal are seven points clear at the top of the table as we move into 2023.
    90+2. Brighton 2-4 Arsenal
What a fine finale this has been to the Premier League in 2022.
We almost had a grandstand finish on our hands, had that Mitoma second goal of stood, but it has been a wonderful game nonetheless.
    90. Brighton 2-4 Arsenal
There will be six minutes of added time.
    90. Brighton 2-4 Arsenal
Never mind… Ruled out by VAR, as Mitoma comes back from an offside position.
    89. Brighton 3-4 Arsenal
    Mitoma scores again!
    Game. On.
    87. Brighton 2-4 Arsenal
Arsenal making another substitution here, with Martin Odegaard being replaced by Rob Holding.
The Norweigan is given a standing ovation by the away supporters and rightfully so.
    85. Brighton 2-4 Arsenal
Elneny is bought down, after he is subbed on for Thomas Partey.
Lamptey does really well down the right hand side to get a cross into the middle, but no one can do anything with it for Brighton.
    83. Brighton 2-4 Arsenal
Sarmiento dives to the ground in an attempt to win a foul for his side, but there is nothing in it.
He is booked, and rightfully so.
    81. Brighton 2-4 Arsenal
You have to give credit to Brighton here.
They might not take any points, but there are plenty of positives to take from this game for them.
They haven’t let their heads drop, and have controlled possession for large parts of the game against the league leaders.
    79. Brighton 2-4 Arsenal
Normally so reliable, that is really poor from William Saliba.
He lets Ferguson slide past him all too easily, and perhaps looks a little complacent there.
    77. Brighton 2-4 Arsenal
    Well, well, well!
Evan Ferguson gets his first Premier League goal, aged just 18!
    Game on!
    75. Brighton 1-4 Arsenal
Julio Enciso is on for Brighton, he replaces Solly March for his third appearance of the season.
    71. Brighton 1-4 Arsenal
That is how you assert your dominance.
From one end to the other thanks to a wonderful pass from Martin Odegaard.
It is through to the feet of Gabriel Martinelli, who toe pokes it home.
    69. Brighton 1-3 Arsenal
Colwill can’t quite pick out Mitoma with a pass, as Brighton look to keep up their attacking momentum in this game.
Arteta is far more animated on the touchline all of a sudden.
    66. Brighton 1-3 Arsenal
A lovely reverse pass from Pascal Gross finds Mitoma inside the box, and he does brilliantly to slot it past Aaron Ramsdale.
    64. Brighton 1-3 Arsenal
Brighton get their goal, it is Karou Mitoma!
    62. Brighton 0-3 Arsenal
A shove in the back from Dunk on Nketiah is not given as a penalty, despite the forwards’ protests.
It will be a goal kick for Sanchez in the Brighton goal.
    60. Brighton 0-3 Arsenal
A few changes for both sides…
Zinchenko and White are replaced by Tomiyasu and Tierney.
Sarmiento and Ferguson are on for Brighton, in replacement of Adam Lallana and Trossard.
    58. Brighton 0-3 Arsenal
Mitoma comes forward for Brighton, but Saliba is across to stop him in typically imperious fashion.
Brighton have a corner, which is stopped well by Ramsdale.
    56. Brighton 0-3 Arsenal
It’s just the 56th minute, and the ‘ole’s’ are starting to come from the away supporters inside the AMEX.
A volley is fired over by Gabriel in the meantime.

Marcus Rashford was guilty of oversleeping, but it was the Wolves defence that were caught napping once Erik ten Hag sent on the forward at the start of the second half.
The England star thumped home the only goal of the game to make up with his manager and lift Manchester United into the top four.
It means supporters of the Red Devils will begin 2023 full of belief, and Wolves fans may yet be similarly confident of a happy new year after watching two much-improved performances since Julen Lopetegui took charge.
There’s more Premier League action to come on this New Year’s Eve including four top-flight fixtures that kicked-off moments ago at 3pm.
Thanks for joining us, and a happy new year to you all.
    Match winner Marcus caught napping
Marcus Rashford has revealed that he was dropped from Erik ten Hag’s starting line-up after oversleeping and missing the start of a team meeting.
