Newcastle 1 Brentford 0: Howe’s blushes spared by Flekken howler as Wilson penalty wins the points for lacklustre Toon

EDDIE HOWE was spared more flak by flaky Brentford keeper Mark Flekken. Newcastle CEO Darren Eales admitted before the season that he had to calm the Saudi chiefs down after a draw with Crystal Palace in January.

That point extended the Magpies unbeaten run to 15, so you started to wonder how they would react if this ended in a loss or turgid stalemate on the back of three straight defeats.
And at no point did Newcastle look like winning this one until the dodgy Dutch stopper – a summer signing from Freiburg – handed the Tynesiders a lifeline on a platter by needlessly taking Anthony Gordon out on the byline for a penalty just after the hour.
Callum Wilson buried it, making it 14 goals in his last 17 Prem games and taking him level with Les Ferdinand’s Toon total.
This was about the win but the Tynesiders were once again well off it.
Famed for their intensity under Howe, it is sorely lacking right now.
Despite that, three points stops their mini-crisis reaching boiling point as they head to face AC Milan on Tuesday for their Champions League return following a 20-year absence.
Now up to 11th in the Prem, and with Sheffield United next, this could prove a huge turning point – even if it was another performance to concern Howe.
He made five changes to try and kickstart the season, with Harvey Barnes handed a first start and Wilson, Sven Botman, Elliot Anderson and Sean Longstaff also in.

This already had a must-win feel to it the Mags manager wanted to avoid heading to Milan with further questions over his future.
Yet they could and perhaps should have been behind inside three minutes when Aaron Hickey – finding a ridiculous amount of space inside the box – was denied by Nick Pope from a tight angle.
But that warning shot hardly sparked Newcastle into life with Brentford the far better side early on.
The hosts were lethargic off the ball, sloppy on it and their left side was under constant bombardment.
Expecting to see their side come out firing, the crowd were not impressed.
Yoane Wissa was a whisker away from converting Mathias Jensen’s wicked cross 23 minutes in.
The Geordies finally had a shot five minutes later, and from the resulting corner Bruno Guimaraes’ header from point-blank range at the back post was just about kept out by Mark Flekken.
The first-half was instantly forgettable and Newcastle needed inspiration, yet they started the second just as slack.
Wilson then bundled the ball in following a goalmouth scramble after the unconvincing Flekken fluffed a punched clearance, but Craig Pawson immediately gave a foul.
Wissa squandered another half-chance at the other end seconds later yet, shooting towards the Gallowgate, it was Newcastle pressing – and they were handed a penalty just after the hour for Flekken’s foul on Gordon.
Deadly Wilson made no mistake – taking his season’s tally to three – firing over the outstretched Flekken to the mighty relief of St James’.
It was far from over though but just as Brentford threatened to get back in, ref Craig Pawson pointed to the spot again for a Bryan Mbeumo handball – only to reverse his decision after looking at the monitor.
There were nine minutes of injury time but Newcastle held on without any major frights for a priceless victory.

Wolves 1 Liverpool 3: Reds overcome horror first-half to go top of the Premier League as Salah turns provider

ANDY ROBERTSON marked his 200th Prem appearance for Liverpool with the late strike that sent Jurgen Klopp’s side towards comeback victory. The Scotland left back, skippering the side in the place of suspended captain Virgil van Dijk, scampered onto a perfect lay – off from Mo Salah.

Mohamed Salah didn’t manage to get on the score sheet, but bagged himself two assistsCredit: Reuters
The eight goal of his Anfield career followed a 55th minute equaliser from Cody Gakpo and 60 seconds into time added on Harvey Elliott claimed a third, his shot deflected by Hugo Bueno past stranded Jose Sa and credited as an own goal..
Sub Elliott then sprinted to the massed ranks Liverpool fans and for a few seconds the celebrations threatened to get out of hand as he was engulfed by them.
Yet boss Klopp, for all his delight, will still have been alarmed by what went on within his side before all that back – slapping and self congratulation..
For if this is to be the “new” Liverpool that he is now trumpeting, they are going to have to blow a lot harder and hotter.
For they could so easily have been blown away by the break after Hee Chan-Hwang bagged the opener for Wolves.
In fact Klopp can’t have been unable to believe his eyes after that seventh minute strike minute strike for this threatened to become Groundhog day for him.
After witnessing the shocking capitulation of last February when Liverpool lost 3 – 0 here, the German insisted he had “no words” for that performance.
Well, he stood on the touchline this time around looking gobsmacked as he men in red were given the run-around.
CASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO WELCOME OFFERS
True enough skipper van Dijk was in dock while Trent Alexander-Arnold was side-lined with a pulled hamstring.
With Ibrahima Konate fit only for the bench he gave a full debut to 20 year old Jarrell Quansah.
Yet in Joe Gomez at right back and with Joel Matip alongside him Klopp should have been able to rely on long combined experience.
Except they found themselves running around in circles as Pedro Neto and Wolves £12.5M debutant Jean-Ricner Bellegrade constantly flew at them.
The Anfield pair were not helped by Dominic Szoboszlai and Alexis MacAllister who cost £95M and are supposed to be forming the midfield basis of the new Liverpool.
Szoboszlai, especially, kept giving the ball away on the right side and Neto and Bellegrade made hay.
Portuguese attacker Neto made Gomez and Matip look stupid, too, as he jetted into the box, easing past half – hearted tackles, to deliver a low cross.
Hwang met it first time and while Alisson looked to have stopped the effort with his legs he couldn’t prevent the ball crossing his line.

Pedro Neto stunned the Liverpool defence to assist Hwang Hee-ChanCredit: AP
There were no words, indeed, for the defending or cover from the malfunctioning midfield – a throwback to seven months ago when a fifth minute Matip own goal signalled that defeat.
Klopp’s side had no answer – and worryingly for him no apparent desire – to get stuck into Gary O’Neil’s vibrant attackers.
In the 10th minute only a lucky touch by Gomez stopped Neto bagging a second and with just over a half hour gone Matheus Cunha should have done exactly that.
Neto, once again, took Gomez to the cleaners, nut – megging him before chipping across the box.
It was a gift for Cunha and all he had to do from six yards out but the £44M buy from Atletico Madrid mis – time his leap and ended up looking ike a clown.
Regrets there were then plenty as Salah slotted the ball in for Gakpo to crack home on the 55th minute.
From that point, with the Old Gold running out of steam there was only going to be one winner, Klopp having hooked Mac Allister at half – time had thrown on a clutch of fresh legs.
But he will know he dodged a bullet – and that new Liverpool or not, his side can still have plenty of problem  at the back, just like the old Liverpool.

    Steve Clarke signs us off
The final thoughts of Scotland boss Steve Clarke brings about the end of SunSport’s live coverage of the latest instalment of the oldest international rivalry in footie history.
He told Channel Four: “First half, we didn’t really get started, couldn’t get hold of the ball.
“Second half, we showed a better intensity, and when it goes 2-1 we had the chance to be in the game, but England scored another one and it was always going to be difficult to get back in.
“England started like the top side they are. We’re not there, but we’re trying to develop, trying to get better. We’ve always come back stronger from adversity, and let’s hope that’s the case [here].
“Andy [Robertson] made a mistake for the second goal, that happens in football. We’re capable of scoring goals against top teams, and hopefully we take that to Spain next month.
“When you play against a side as good as England, you have to get everything 100% correct. We didn’t do that tonight, and that’s why we lost the game.
“The camp’s been a success, because we’ve got a perfect record in the qualifying group. We’re in a good place.”
    Hey Jude
Jude Bellingham is refusing to rest on his laurels following his scintillating start to the season for club and country.
The Real Madrid and England ace – who has bagged six goals so far this campaign, told beIN Sports: “I’m always learning.
“I’m so lucky to have played with so many great players with my last club and even more so at my new club which is a big boost for me and for my own confidence to play with such great players.
“I’m just learning all the time really. I’m trying to add more attributes to my game and trying to affect the ones I’ve already got.
“If I can keep being effective in goal and doing the things that I do well already overall in my game then I think I could be doing well and hopefully have a good season.
“So it’s important that I keep it up.”

    Ferdinand’s message to Southgate
Former England defender Rio Ferdinand has urged Gareth Southgate to “build” his team around Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden.
He tweeted: BUILD THIS TEAM AROUND… BELLINGHAM / FODEN.
    “Simples!”

    England ‘far better’
Former Scotland defender Willie Miller offered no excuses for Steve Clarke’s defeat to England.
He told the BBC: “We didn’t get nearly close enough to England in the first half.
“The fear was it could get to an embarrassing score, but 3-1 was deserved.
“However better that second half was from Scotland, England really took the foot off the gas.
“Hands up, we were beaten by a far better side.”

    Golden Generation?
Graeme Souness certainly thinks this crop of England stars is the best the nation has ever produced.
And he said it straight to the face of former Three Lions star Joe Cole, who was part of the star-studded 2006 World Cup squad.
The Scot said: “This is the golden generation.
“Forget, you know, with Frank [Lampard], Steven Gerrard and Paul Scholes. They haven’t got a strength in depth.”
    Souness slams Scotland
Graeme Souness has hit out at Scotland for their display against the Auld Enemy.
He said: “This is a passionate football crowd – we gave them nothing to shout about tonight.
“And I accept that England were fabulous and are a fabulous team.
“But I think from Scotland’s point of view, they couldn’t get the crowd involved and they didn’t show the required aggression.
“It is a friendly, but it’s a Scotland-England game. I see people picking each other off the ground and I’m like, ‘Mmm, that shouldn’t happen in this game.'”

Scotland 1-3 England – Full time
The travelling Three Lions fans roar with delight as the final whistle blows at Hampden Park.
A stellar showing from Gareth Southgate’s troops, with the exception of Harry Maguire.
Jude Bellingham – who has hit the ground running at Real Madrid – was undoubtedly the man of the match.
    Scotland 1-3 England
    90. Harry Maguire is being trolled by fans as chants of “Harry Maguire he scored coz you’re s**t” ring throughout the stadium.

England’s record goalscorer cooly slotted the ball into the far corner past Angus Gunn after beautifully collecting a pass from Jude Bellingham.
Bellingham deserves the plaudits, however, as he ghosted past two players and laid on the perfect ball to his skipper to restore the Three Lions’ two-goal advantage.

    49. Billy Gilmour wastes a golden opportunity to reduce the deficit.
The former Chelsea defender does well to create himself an angle for a shot from outside the 18-yard box.
But he curls his effort high over the bar, much to the disappointment of the Hampden faithful.
Scotland 0-2 England – Maguire enters the fray
Harry Maguire has come on for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.
It may be a friendly, but Maguire can ill-afford a poor showing here given that he’s surplus to requirements at Manchester United.
Gareth Southgate has been nothing but loyal to the world’s most expensive defender.
But even he can only show blind faith for so long if the former Leicester man continues to struggle.
