Copy linkCopiedSunSport’s Wally Downes Jr offers his verdictCHRIS EUBANK JR ended his three-year war of words with Conor Benn with 36 minutes of frantic violence. In a 12-round slugfest that left both men exhausted and swinging for the Spurs rafters, the bitter rivalry was brought to a close by a brutal battle.Benn was shattered by carrying around an extra 20lbs after moving up from welterweight and Eubank was wrecked after melting off a similar amount in the build-up.All the skill, technique, game plans and mind games went out of the window and the pair attacked each other as much as they possibly could, from the opening bell until the final second…Read the rest here:Copy linkCopiedCopy linkCopiedBenn wants the rematch”We knew he was a good fighter. All that talk is fighting talk.”I feel like I can compete at 160lbs.”I want the rematch, I’d love to avenge that loss.”But it’s either the rematch or go and face [WBC and WBA super-lightweight champion] Mario Barrios.”Copy linkCopiedMore from Benn”I stayed on the ropes a bit too long, he worked harder towards the end.”I’m going to have to watch it back.”Copy linkCopiedConor Benn speaks”14 months out of the ring. It was special.”Copy linkCopiedEubank Jr speaks”I knew I was capable of that, I just needed someone to bring it out of me.”I didn’t expect him to be the guy to do that.”I guess the fact our fathers did it years ago.”Copy linkCopiedThe moment he wonChris Eubank Jr drops to his knees and screams!Copy linkCopiedEubank Jr roars, Benn is stunnedWow!Wow! That is a sensational result.Copy linkCopiedJudges scorecards – Eubank Jr wins! The scorecards are in and all three score it 116-112 to Chris Eubank Jr!Copy linkCopiedWe go to the judges!I am not brave enough to give my scorecard on that one, no way I can second guess how the judges might score that fight. It ebbed and flowed with both fighters having success and struggling at times. That was absolutely sensational.Copy linkCopiedChris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn – R12Here we go – the final round of what has been a brilliant fight!Huge roar goes out from the crowd and the whole stadium looks to be on their feet.Oh wow here we go, this is no longer a boxing match, this is a pub brawl! The pair of them just throw wild shots!Eubank Jr lands a great shot that wobbles Benn but he manages to evade any further damage, brilliant stuff. They continue to stand face to face and unlaod on each other.Ninety seconds of the round to go and dozens of punches are going in from both of them. Then in the middle of an exchange Eubank Jr throws in a massive left hook that has Benn stumbling! He SOMEHOW stays on his feet but Eubank Jr smells blood!Eubank Jr continues to throw but Benn lands another great right to the body before his jaw is spent spinning back the other way from another great Eubank Jr left! There goes the bell – both corners celebrate – but what a fight!Copy linkCopiedChris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn – R11Two rounds to go! The two resume the position up close and personal and continue to just unload punches on each other.Eubank Jr lands with a lovely right to the body and then a sharp jab reigns in.Up close he unloads a nice combo with an uppercut landing but not causing much damage, while a couple of others only catch air. Both men continue to work off the other’s shoulder and smash each other.Eubank Jr on top in this round as he shoves Benn into the ropes and refuses to let Benn out – this is great stuff from him, he’s found a bit of energy from somewhere. It’s then Benn’s turn to unload some good shots to the body and a big right from Benn just has Eubank Jr momentarily stunned. It’s right at the end of the round though and he can’t follow it up.Copy linkCopiedChris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn – R10The ref confirms that the cut comes from a clash of heads rather than a punch – but the damage is still there.Into the championship rounds and they both again come out throwing bombs.Benn starts the round with another nice right but Eubank Jr then unloads a nice combo with his rival on the ropes.Another lovely left hook lands from Eubank Jr but Benn continues to throw big shots.Eubank Jr is caught and just emerges gingerly from that exchange. He does respond with another nice left hook but Benn the starts working the body and Eubank Jr is gasping in air – these are painful shots!Eubank Jr looking really tired again and Benn seems to have found a second wins. All props to the older man though, he continues to throw shots with venom despite his fuel light clearly starting to flash red.He finishes the round well but that was Benn’s round for me.This is so tight – and so good.Copy linkCopiedChris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn – R9 Oh wow! Benn lands two huge punches to start the round and Eubank Jr looks in a bit of trouble!Another shot then comes in and Eubank Jr looks in real pain. But he digs deep to push Benn back onto the ropes and fires in half a dozen punches on the inside. The pace increases yet again as both fighters are putting everything on the line in this one!Massive punches coming in from both – the momentum is throwing from one fighter to the other. But you feel this type of war favours only one man, Conor Benn who is the younger and faster fighter.Eubank Jr emerges from a clinch with a big cut of his right eye, not clear if that was a punch or a headbutt.Superb stuff from both though as they continue to throw with supreme violence.Incredible stuff – that cut is likely to play a big part here!Copy linkCopiedChris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn – R8Benn comes out like a rocket and just unloads with massive shots and combos. Not everything lands but there was a couple of decent shots in there.Eubank Jr then unloads and is countered, but then the opposite happens as the pair continue to throw and throw.Eubank Jr continues to have decent success with the long uppercut. Both fighters have spent a lot of energy in this one as the second half of the round sees the pace really slow down. They continue to throw and throw – this has very quickly become a WAR now!Twenty seconds left in the round as both men just throw everything they’ve got at each other. They are locked on the ropes and look absolutely gassed as the bell goes. What a brilliant round that was!Copy linkCopiedChris Eubank Jr vs Conor Benn – R7Scrappy start to the round as the pair are grabbing each other in the clinch and fail to separate when asked.Victor Loughlin looks like he might have taken a punch there as well and he has a stern word with Eubank Jr.Eubank Jr then gets a huge cheer for a peach of a straight left he lands on the chin of Benn and then about 20 seconds later he plants his feet and learns another massive combo.Benn isn’t rocked but they are really good shots that will have impressed the judges.Benn continues to walk forward though but he’s not really landing too much.Another decent shot from Eubank Jr lands and Benn is no longer the bouncy, elusive fighter he was at the start of the contest. He’s still throwing, though, but the better work came from Eubank Jr.Copy linkCopied More

Arsenal vs Crystal Palace LIVE RESULT: Gunners delay Liverpool’s Prem title win despite Mateta’s stunning strike

IT has ended 2-2 in what was a thrilling end-to-end Premier League clash between Arsenal and Crystal Palace!Jakub Kiwior gave the Gunners an early lead before Eberechi Eze scored a stunning volley to level the score.Leandro Trossard then continued his red-hot form by bagging a solo goal to restore Arsenal’s lead. But then a mixup at the back followed by a wonderful Mateta long-range effort forced both teams to share the spoils.RESULT: Arsenal 2-2 PalaceHaving players you can trustA couple of summers ago, Mikel Arteta focussed his attentions and making his team more solid at the back.He felt the addition of David Raya was the answer to that question. When asked about the signing, the Spaniard said they needed a keeper who is good with the ball at his feet.Raya fails to show this talent and often can be seen misplacing passes and getting his side into trouble. However, what should be a bigger concern is that the keeper always seems to have a mistake in him.His positioning for Mateta’s equaliser was baffling, gifting the striker the chance to go for goal. From the fans perspective, Arteta’s stubborn nature means he is unlikely to admit he was wrong and will persist with the former Brentford keeper.Credit: EPACredit: GettyCredit: GettyCopy linkCopiedMore key players need in capitalWhen you look at the current Arsenal strongest XI, there is a lot of pressure on Odegaard and Saka to perform. They have bit-part players, capable of contributing the occasional important goal, but the duo are their main threats to opponents. It will be interesting to see how much the club back him in the summer and, more importantly, how Arteta sees fit to spend it.Copy linkCopiedPressure builds on SpaniardMany people have pointed towards the money Mikel Arteta has spent to assemble this current Arsenal squad. The Spaniard has had in excess of £650m from the owners, as they backed his visions of where the club need to be.While he has secured regular Champions League football over the last five years, they have not brought the silverware back to North London that many had expected. This makes the showdown with PSG even more important, it is now their only chance of giving anyone at the club a reason to venture into the trophy room at The Emirates.Credit: GettyCopy linkCopiedAll attention goes to ParisArsenal have some time to recover now and make sure that everyone is fighting fit for the biggest game the club have had for some time. They welcome PSG to The Emirates for the first-leg of the Champions League semi-finals.Luis Enrique’s side are the favourites to win the trophy now and it will a similar level of performance from The Gunners as they showed against Real Madrid to stand a chance of progressing.Copy linkCopiedEagles looking forward to big daySpeaking with Sky Sports, the Crystal Palace manager spoke about tonight’s performance and the daunting prospect of going to play at Wembley in this weekend’s FA Cup semi-final:Let’s see on Saturday. When you perform like this, it gives you confidence. If you do not change something, improve your play, this is what we need. We are looking forward to this game, it is a huge game for us. Drawing like we did today, can help us towards this approach. I was told the size of the pitch is the same as here, the grass should still be green. We know what we want to do, now it is finding the right tactics against their shape and perform as a team. This is how we will walk into Wembley.Oliver GlasnerCrystal PalaceCopy linkCopiedGunners fail to capitalise on slipMan City, by their own standards, have had a truly woeful season to the point where Champions League qualification still hangs in the balance.Having dominated the Premier League for so long, when their levels nose-dived, Arsenal did not take advantage. In fact, looking at the table, The Gunners have won the same amount of games as Pep Guardiola’s team this campaign. It is debatable if they were ever in a title race if we are honest.Copy linkCopiedAvoiding the burning questionsSky Sports, in their interview with Arteta post-match, failed to asked the question that every wanted to hear. For the last few months, after every game he has been asked about whether they can catch league-leaders Liverpool. On the day where they pretty much handed the title to Arne Slot’s side, the broadcaster failed to address the elephant in the room.Fas up and down the country wanted to hear whether the Spaniard was finally conceding the title to their rivals.Copy linkCopiedBoss putting a brave face on itSpeaking with Sky Sports, Mikel Arteta gave his views on tonight’s performance and the title race with Liverpool:Yes we are disappointed with the result and the performance. We started to give sloppy balls away. When you are not at your best, you can give the game away and it cost us two points. We know the stadards that are required in the Premier League and there are many aspects we should have done better today. We have to do much better. Mikel ArtetaArsenalCopy linkCopiedPalace have Villa in their sightsDrawing with Arsenal in North London will be a huge confidence boost for The Eagles heading into the FA Cup..They head to Wembley to face Aston Villa this weekend and will feel they are more than capable of booking their place in the final. With no injury concerns this evening, Oliver Glasner should be able to field his strongest starting XI for this mammoth game for the club.Copy linkCopiedArteta knows cost of equaliserMikel Arteta cut a frustrated figure on the touchline. While he felt his side were in control of the game in the main, when their lead is so slender, they run the risk of being punished. When Mateta scored, the Spaniard seemed to know that was any feint hopes of winning the title over for another campaign.Credit: GettyCopy linkCopiedSa magnifique MatetaJean-Philippe Mateta came off the bench to make all the difference at The Emirates this evening.Despite only coming on in the 80th minute, he was awarded the man of the match award for his exploits. He has been in superb form this season and could draw the interests of some big teams on the lookout for a striker.Credit: GettyCredit: EPACopy linkCopiedDraws cost Gunners dearlyAs was shown today, Arsenal have had far too many matches this campaign where they have struggled putting the game to bed.The Gunners have drawn 13 games, compared to Liverpool’s 7 draws.Just that stat alone shows how Mikel Arteta’s side could have been 12 points closer to the league leaders. They need to learn from these experiences.Credit: AlamyCopy linkCopiedEagle with pinpoint accuracyAfter his superb goal, Mateta spoke with Sky Sports who asked what made him try a shot from such distance:First of all, when I start on the bench, I saw he was very high. When I come on, I try and I score. I was scared it would hit the crossbar and I just waited until the end. Today we did it for our pride, we have struggled the last three games. Today was a good game for us. I think we have confidence now and hopefully we will win on the weekend. Copy linkCopiedEagles show what Gunners are missingAll the talk amongst pundits at this time of the season is about where sides need to strengthen to push onto to better things next time around. Two players shone for Crystal Palace this evening, who could answer many problems for Mikel Arteta.Eberechi Eze and Jean-Philippe Mateta would slot in well to The Gunners side and make them far more potent in front of goal. With both players having plenty of experience in the Premier League, you wonder why Arteta has his eyes firmly focussed on talent abroad.Credit: EPACopy linkCopiedReality dawns upon North LondonEven the most ardent Arsenal fan was questioning their sanity claiming their side could still win the title this season. However, drawing at home against Crystal Palace has reduced the requirement on Arne Slot’s Liverpool to just needing one point from their last five games. Most knew this was done and dusted some time ago, now it is almost a mathematical reality.Copy linkCopiedFT: Arsenal 2-2 Crystal PalaceRIP Arsenal’s title challenge of 2024/25.The only chance of winning the title now is if Liverpool lose all of their last five games and concede more than 12 goals in the process. It lasted until four games from the end of the campaign. They just could not put Crystal Palace to the sword this evening.Copy linkCopiedFT: Arsenal 2-2 Crystal PalaceThe referee brings the game to a close in North London.Crystal Palace have grabbed an impressive draw. This will be seen as two points dropped for The Gunners.Copy linkCopiedArsenal 2-2 Crystal Palace90+8. Find it, Sam, hard and fast!”Copy linkCopiedEggington vs Cutler R7Cutler is now leaking blood from his nose and left eye but he’s bouncing on his front foot and throwing counter right hands.Eggington has been here so many times before, the deep end of a fight will hold no surprises for him.Double-jab from the Brummie tattoo fan, Eggington hits the floor but it was a slip and not counted.Good round for Cutler, he’s bleeding plenty but landing lots and Eggington’s right eye is now almost completely closed, due to swelling.Copy linkCopiedEggington vs Cutler R6Eggingtom trainer Jon Pegg tells his man that Cutler is tired and that they need another round just like the fifth.Eggington agrees that Cutler is starting to wilt under the bright lights and pressure. But the fight still seems so close and tight.Cutler is now cut, blood is streaming down the left side of his face. But then the Cherries fan lands a good right hand. The ref breaks the pair to warn against head clashes but the action resumes with both warriors bleeding but growing in belief.Copy linkCopiedEggington vs Cutler R5Finally some space between the two brawlers.Eggington tries to use his longer levers to stab in jabs. And then two right hands hurt Cutler for the first time. The bell goes at the best time for Cutler and the worst for Eggington.Eggington might have just broken serious ground.Copy linkCopiedEggington vs Cutler R4This is messy and ugly but compelling. One of these tough men will tire soon.Right now it is a battle of will rather than skill. There are pushes and pulls but not many clean punches.Cutler is always on the front foot but that means a lot of his work is smothered.Copy linkCopiedEggington vs Cutler R3Eggington’s corner need to use the interval to work on a cut in his eyebrow,But trainer Jon Pegg is an experienced man and can lead the repairs. The fight is very physical and rough, though, and the blood is oozing out again as Cutler uses his head to barge his way into range.Eggington barges Cutler off and lands scoring long punches.Copy linkCopied More

I don’t need to say too much, it also saves my time. We already have to do too much, it’s how everything is becoming.“Everyone is super sensitive about everything. Of course what we have currently we cannot be critical anyway that’s fine, less talking is even better for me.When asked if his anger was directed at the FIA’s swearing rules, he said: “I know I cannot swear in here but at the same time you can also not be critical,“Or any kind of form that might harm or danger, let me get the sheet out…“There’s a lot of lines, that’s why it’s better not to talk about it or you can get yourself in trouble and I don’t think anyone wants that.”Credit: GettyCopy linkCopiedWhat’s next?We now have a two-week break before the next F1 race.Race six will come on May 4 in Miami as the first of three races in the United States this season. It is also the second Sprint Race of the season, following on from China.Lando Norris won that race last year, and will be hoping he can repeat that this year to help him close the gap in the Drivers’ Standings. After Miami, there is another gap before the triple-header of Imola, Monaco and Spain.Copy linkCopiedBREAKING: FIA release statement on Verstappen penaltyThe FIA have released their statement and explained the reason for the ten-second penalty handed to Verstappen. The penalty was reduced from the normal baseline of 10 seconds to half of that because of the “mitigating circumstance” of it being a Lap 1, Turn 1 incident. The statement said: “The Stewards reviewed positioning/marshalling system data, video, timing, telemetry and in-car video evidence and determined that car 81 had its front axle at least alongside the mirror of Car 1 prior to and at the apex of corner 1 when trying to overtake Car 1 on the inside. “In fact, Car 81 was alongside Car 1 at the apex. Based on the Driver’s Standards Guidelines, it was therefore Car 81’s corner and hewas entitled to be given room.”Car 1 then left the track and gained a lasting advantage that was not given back. He stayed in front of Car 81 and sought to build on the advantage.”Ordinarily, the baseline penalty for leaving the track and gaining a lasting advantage is 10 seconds.”However, given that this was lap one and turn one incident, we considered that to be a mitigating circumstance and imposed a 5 second time penalty instead.”Copy linkCopied‘You fired me’ – Martin Brundle in awkward reunion with former boss at Saudi Arabian Grand PrixMartin Brundle endured an awkward reunion with an old boss at the Saudi Grand Prix. The Sky Sports reporter bumped into Alpine’s Flavio Briatore before the start of the race.Brundle used to race for the Italian businessman at the Benetton team for the 1992 F1 season.He was the team-mate of F1 legend Michael Schumacher but was sacked in 1993.And the former driver was quick to remind the Alpine executive advisor of their awkward past.Copy linkCopied’Just a racing incident’ – Tsunoda on Gasly collisionTsunoda told the official F1 channel: “I don’t know what I should have done. I was behind Sainz, I was fully in control in terms of speed.”I was not like nearly crashing into Carlos in front. So it’s hard to justify which is wrong or better.”In contrast to Gasly, the Red Bull driver said his rival did not leave him enough space, but considered the collision “just a racing incident.”He added: “I don’t think I could have done better than that, to be honest.”I tried my best to avoid him as much as I can, but also in that kind of space, it’s really hard to avoid. I don’t know what can I do other than that, to be honest.“We kind of knew, each other, I mean, if you try to go outside from there, other than if he goes half of the car, at least on the white line, it would [have been a] collision. So it was a shame.”Copy linkCopied’I left him room’ – Gasly on Lap 1 crash with TsunodaPierre Gasly has broken his silence after crashing out of the race on Lap 1.The duo tangled at the start with Tsunoda clipping the rear left tyre of Gasly as they went through a tight turn.Gasly was instantly out of the race and prompted a safety car, while Tsunoda limped back to the pits before he too was forced to retire. But the Alpine driver believes he gave his Red Bull rival, also his former team-mate enough room.He said: “I think I had a good run in Turn 4, managed to get good braking and get ahead of him. “I was aware he was on the inside so I left as much space as I could on the exit of the corner.“I had already two wheels off the track, I had to keep my inside wheels obviously inside the white line to make the move past. “But unfortunately there was this touch and it just sent my car spinning.”Copy linkCopiedPodium in picturesHere’s a look at the podium sitters today, including race winner Piastri.Credit: EPACredit: AFPCredit: AFPCopy linkCopiedTense cooldown roomThere was tension in the cooldown room after the controversial penalty handed to Verstappen, which ultimately decided the race.Watch below.Copy linkCopied’I didn’t feel comfortable’ – Hamilton on Ferrari resultTold Sky Sports: “There wasn’t one second [I felt comfortable].”The car is capable of being P3. “Charles did a great job today.”Copy linkCopiedPiastri cheeky social media messagePiastri had a cheeky social media message after asking for a couch following his race win in Saudi Arabia.Credit: @oscarpiastri/InstagramCredit: @oscarpiastri/Instagram
