That honour could well instead go to the 22-year-old Portuguese international midfielder Fabio Vieira, a name that immediately got the Gunners fanbase excited and not just because of his famous surname.
In truth, however, despite both being central midfielders, Fabio Vieira and Patrick Vieira are nothing alike in terms of playing style.
Fabio Vieira is very much a number ‘8’ who is most comfortable in an advanced midfield position when his side are in possession.

His £35million signing will change the way that Arsenal and Mikel Arteta plan to use their midfield going into next season.
1. Creativity in the final third
It will be fascinating to see how Vieira’s signing affects the way that Arsenal play in the build-up and attacking thirds of the game.
Last season we tended to see Martin Odegaard act as the main link between the midfield and the attack as he positioned himself towards the right side and in the channel.
Granit Xhaka and Thomas Partey were often positioned behind in something approaching a double pivot.

While Xhaka has the ability to change the angle of the attack through diagonal cross-field passes and Partey provides powerful runs that access space and disrupt the opposition defensive structure, neither is particularly creative in the final third.
There were games last season in which the opposition were able to negate the creative threat of Odegaard and this effectively shut down the Arsenal attack.
Vieira is a midfield player who understands how to position himself in space in the channels.
He also provides real threat either in terms of taking possession on the half-turn and driving forward at the opposition or when receiving the ball and then finding passing lanes that break the last line and release team-mates running into space.

In addition, Vieira appears comfortable playing in the channel on the left-hand side of the pitch.
This should provide real balance to the Arsenal midfield with Odegaard having a preference for playing towards the right.
2. Active out of possession
There is always a risk when you look to change the structure of the midfield that you can be left without balance, either in the attacking or defensive phase.
And with either one of Partey or Xhaka likely to drop out to accommodate Vieira, there would be a concern that Arsenal would lose something defensively.
Odegaard is, of course, very active against the ball in terms of pressing aggressively and blocking passing lanes.
The opposition are being pressed and forced to play the ball back towards their own goal. As the ball is played backwards Vieira is very active and he wins the ball back close to the opposition half
And Vieira is very much a midfield player in the same mould. He is willing to work hard against the ball and he is actually very strong when engaging in defensive duels and looking to win the ball back for his team.
Vieira is capable of playing in higher positions in the defensive phase and of looking to press the ball and engage the ball carrier.
He is quick and proactive in terms of looking to close down the player receiving the ball and he will be aggressive when it comes to getting to the ball and looking to make a challenge.

The Portuguese midfielder is an intelligent player and he understands when there is value to step out in order to look for a challenge and when he should hold a deeper position and look to block passing lanes in the defensive block.
While Vieira is not the most physical of central midfielders, he does have good core strength and the ability to time his tackles in order to give himself the greatest opportunity to win the ball back.
3. More like Man City
The signing of Vieira signifies an attempt by Arteta to move more fully towards the system of play he learnt while working for Man City under Pep Guardiola.
In Vieira and Odegaard, Arsenal will have two midfield players who are capable of playing as the two free ‘8’s in a 4-3-3 shape and this will provide more balance to the attacking structure.

One of the features last season for Arsenal under Arteta was that of the three main midfield players only Odegaard would look to occupy high positions on a regular basis.
Both Partey and Xhaka showed that they were willing to support from behind and make runs to support but it was the Norwegian international that took the bulk of the responsibility for joining the midfield and attack.
During his time at Man City, Arteta would have grown accustomed to having the likes of David Silva, Bernardo Silva, Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne, all of whom were capable of playing as the ‘8’ and linking the midfield and attack.
With Vieira and Odegaard playing together, the midfield players for Arsenal will be more inclined to push forward to occupy space and create dangerous situations in the final third and around the penalty area.
The new Vieira
As we said, Arsenal could well have already landed their most important signing of summer.
Vieira is dynamic, creative and good defensively – and might also mean Arteta can finally move on from Xhaka. What’s not to like?

NEW Chelsea director Barbara Charone will have dealt with everything and anything as music’s leading publicist for over 40-years, so nothing will faze her under the new Todd Boehly regime.The 70-year-old American has worked as a PR for Madonna, Rod Stewart, and Keith Richards, acting as confidante for the Rolling Stones axeman following a drugs arrest in Canada in the 1970s.

She currently has her own agency, MBC (set up in 2000) that looks after the likes of the Foo Fighters, Depeche Mode, Lewis Capaldi, and more.
But her weekends have been reserved for the Blues for over three decades now, regularly making the pilgrimage to Stamford Bridge to regularly cheer on the Premier League giants
And she even had a hand in Chelsea’s FA Cup anthem Blue Day, as song by Madness frontman Suggs in 1990s.
“They wanted to get two fans on the board,” she recently told The Big Issue.
“It’s like a lot of things in life, a lot of luck is involved. They wanted a woman and approached me, and it was obviously a no-brainer. It’s ridiculously exciting.”

New recruit
Last week, it was confirmed that Charone would be a director on Boehly’s board, along with Jonathan Goldstein, the CEO of Cain International, as well as Times columnist and Conservative peer Daniel Finkelstein, another Chelsea supporter.
Charone, herself, is a fanatic. A season ticket holder for a number of years, she was in the stands in Munich to see the club win their first Champions League title in 2012 against the hosts Bayern Munich.
Alongside her love of the beautiful game, Charone cemented her reputation as “Britain’s most powerful music PR”.

But before that, the Chicagoan started off as a music journalist in her homeland, before emigrating to our shores in 1974, where she wrote fornow defunct Sounds magazine, freelanced for Rolling Stone, and was one of the first female writers for the NME.
A superfan of The Rolling Stones, Charone interviewed the band numerous times – striking up a strong bond with guitarist Richards.
That trust would come in handy in 1977, when the wild rocker was arrested in Toronto, Canada for possession of heroin.
Charone relived the story in her brilliant tell-all memoir Access All Areas of helping Keith, as well as penned his book.
Rescuing Keith
‘By 1976 I had a good relationship with Keith, having interviewed him on numerous occasions,’ she wrote.
‘I eventually asked him if I could do a book on him, and much to my surprise and delight he said yes.
‘Keith suggested I come to Toronto early in 1977 for the Rolling Stones shows at the El Mocambo club.
‘I flew to Canada at the end of February, but unfortunately the Royal Canadian Mounted Police reached Keith’s hotel before I did, arresting him for possession of heroin.
‘Keith was in big trouble. Suddenly rehearsal time for the upcoming club shows was cut short by meetings with lawyers and court appearances.

‘Keith was no stranger to the law but this was his most serious drug charge yet, with a prison sentence a very real possibility.
“The shows at El Mocambo (capacity 300) took place on March 4 and 5, and it is a testament to the band’s dedication and stamina that they pulled them off under such trying circumstances.
Uncertain future
‘They tore the place up. It was one of those “you had to be there” moments. However, the grim reality of the situation hovered like a very dark cloud.
‘When Keith appeared in court he was given bail, his passport confiscated.
“He and partner Anita Pallenberg and their seven-year-old son Marlon returned to their home for the foreseeable future, the 32nd floor of the Harbour Castle Hotel.
‘The future for Keith, and indeed the Stones, was uncertain.
“A couple of days after the court appearance Mick Jagger flew to New York City and soon after the others followed. I was moved to the suite next door to Keith, Anita and Marlon.
‘I’m sure Keith felt alone and quite possibly betrayed but no doubt my staying helped forge a tremendous bond between us.
“It also provided an upfront and personal insight into the man I was writing a book about.
‘God knows what my parents thought, knowing their loving daughter was living for a month in a Toronto hotel alongside a Rolling Stone out on bail for heroin trafficking. It’s going to be a really great book, I promised them.’
Football banter with Rod Stewart
By 1981, Charone had left journalism behind and started working for Warner Music in their public relations department.
Having previously written a Rod Stewart cover interview for Rolling Stone, it was only natural for her to work with the Scottish music legend as his PR.

And a love of football was something they shared in common.
In her memoir, she says ‘Rod Stewart is a massive Celtic fan and really loves football. Likewise, I am passionate about my beloved club Chelsea.
‘Once, while we were in Sweden to shoot a Rolling Stone magazine cover, Rod asked me to read him the scores of that Saturday’s top-flight games before a show.
‘I ran through the scores, leaving off Chelsea’s 7–0 thrashing by Nottingham Forest.
‘The next day, before I left Stockholm, my phone rang, and the voice just said “seven–nil!!!!” and laughed. Rod hung up before I could get a word in.’
Fandom with Suggs
In 1997, Warner signed the Chelsea-mad singer Suggs to their label, which brought Charone plenty of joy.
She already knew the Madness singer, also a regular at Stamford Bridge, and was thrilled to work with him.
Then, an opportunity arose with the Blues appearing in that season’s FA Cup final for their paths to cross in a working capacity – for Chelsea’s FA Cup song.
She recalled, ‘As fate would have it, the songwriter Mike Connaris brought me a Blue Day, which he thought was perfect for Suggs and would make a great FA Cup final song.
‘Suggs loved the track, as did the club. I somehow managed to convince WEA to pay for the recording and to put it out as a single.

‘Before you could say dreams really do come true, I was in a London studio on a Sunday afternoon with Chelsea captain Dennis Wise, Gianluca Vialli, Mark Hughes, Steve Clarke, Gianfranco Zola and the entire Chelsea team making a record.
‘When the team left, Suggs and I sat around having a beer, practically speechless, literally in dreamland. It was a real pinch-me moment.Chelsea won the FA Cup, beating Middlesbrough 2–0.
‘Hearing Blue Day blasted on the Wembley Tannoy brought tears to my eyes. The song is now part of Chelsea folklore and is played at every home game.
‘When Chelsea started their own in-house radio and TV station, Suggs and I were asked to guest on the first matchday show. Suggs hadn’t been to bed and arrived straight from a big boozy night out.

As he began to rise through the youth teams, he struck up a romance with Rosilene.
Childhood sweethearts, it is believed they met at school and became firm allies.
She cheered him on as he made his debut for Sao Paulo in 2018 against Gremio.
She then followed him to Amsterdam, when he made a £13million move to Ajax and helped him settle in the Netherlands.
And when he returned home from the 2020 Olympics with a gold medal, she welcomed him back as a hero.

THE pick of the bunch, in terms of being an Arsenal hero, Ramsey will always have a special place in the hearts of Gunners fans.
In 2014, he ended the club’s nine-year trophy drought by scoring an extra-time winner in a FA Cup final win over Hull.
Three years later he repeated the trick – netting the decisive goal in a 2-1 win over Chelsea at Wembley.
All in all he scored 64 goals in 369 games, until in 2019 Ramsey was allowed to join Juventus when his contract expired.
He signed a mega £400,000-per-week deal with the Serie A giants, but in truth has been a major disappointment – with injures curtailing his progress.
Ramsey, now 31, spent the second half of last season on loan at Rangers – struggling to make an impact before unfortunately missing the crucial penalty in the Europa League final shootout against Eintracht Frankfurt.
He does have a World Cup to look forward to, however, having helped Wales qualify for Qatar.

CARL JENKINSON
JENKINSON and his family were Arsenal fans growing up.
The right-back even has a stone engraved in his late granddad’s memory in Armoury Square outside the Emirates.
So it was a dream for him to wear the red and white, which he did for 70 games.
However, Jenkinson always found himself playing second-fiddle in the first team. First, it was Bacary Sagna and then Hector Bellerin emerged.
‘Jenko’ had successful loan spells with West Ham, but he struggled after moving to Birmingham City (also on loan) in the 2017-18 season.
In 2019, Nottingham Forest signed the defender for an undisclosed fee, but the 30-year-old has been released after spending time on loan at Melbourne City last season.

ALEX OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN
THE youngest of Wenger’s ‘British core’ at 28, the Ox was hit-and-miss with Gunners fans.
The £12million signing from Southampton looked like he was going to be a world-beater in his first season – drawing plaudits from Marco van Basten who called him a “gem”.
He was also nominated for PFA Young Player of the Year in the 2011-12 season.
Niggling injuries plagued him over the course of the next two seasons, while a serious knee injury in 2016 saw him miss the Euros for England.
Oxlade-Chamberlain appeared to be back to his best in the 2016-17 season in a new wing-back role, and was man of the match in a FA Cup semi-final win over Manchester City.

But that summer, Arsenal accepted a £35million bid from Liverpool for his services.
Towards the latter end of his first season, the Ox suffered a serious knee injury that kept him out of action for the majority of the 2018-19 campaign.
He returned to win a Premier League winners’ medal a season later. But the following August he injured his knee again.
Oxlade-Chamberlain remains at Anfield, albeit as a bit-part player – starting only nine Prem games last season.
KIERAN GIBBS
GIBBS broke into the Arsenal side in 2011-12, and for the next two seasons was a first team regular.
The left-back won three FA Cups with the club, although he lost his starting place to Spanish defender Nacho Monreal in the 2015-16 season.
In 2017, the former Wimbledon youth star made the brave decision to leave North London for regular first team football at West Brom in a £7million deal.
He was relegated in his first season with the Baggies, but helped them win promotion two seasons later.
Upon the expiry of his Hawthorns contract in 2021, Gibbs opted to move Stateside with David Beckham’s Inter Miami.
He has since made 17 appearances for the MLS strugglers.

Scotland midfielder Gilmour was involved in a relegation scrap with the Norwich on loan last season, so he definitely needed to get away.
And he has chosen to let his hair down in Ibiza, where he bumped into a football pal.

Winger Sancho, who cost United around £80million, is loving life at the moment.
Back in May, he took a trip to Montego Bay, Jamaica for some sun, sand and sea.
He shared snaps on Insta showing of an amazing view, palm trees and seemed to be having a relaxing time.
Now, Sancho is in Los Angeles – hanging out with a host of other footballers, including Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount.
And they enjoyed a game of basketball in their downtime, and has been seen working out.

For school dinners champion Rashford, his holiday is sightly more gruelling.
The forward is also in the US, but is momentarily in Portland, Oregon where he is doing some extra training.
Rashford filmed himself practising sprints including one up a steep hill and posted some photos on Instagram which showed he was feeling the heat.
He captioned the post: “Just the start 💥.”
That will no doubt impress ten Hag, who will appreciate his application.

With Brazil being so far away, and his family there, it’s no wonder Fred went back home this summer.
The midfielder took his stunning Wag Monique to Fernando de Noronha, and they seem to be having an amazing time.
It’s renowned for its undeveloped beaches, and for scuba diving and snorkeling.
While, sea turtles, rays, dolphins and reef sharks swim in its warm, clear waters.

Dutchman van de Beek will be hoping for a new lease of life under ten Hag.
And a holiday in the sun might be enough to recharge his batteries, following an impressive loan stint at Everton in the second half of last season.

The talented winger, 17, who is obsessed with Cristiano Ronaldo is already living the high-life of a regular starter.
Currently in Ibiza, he shared a photo on a speed boat adjusting his shades, while clutching a Louis Vuitton man bag.
