Cristiano Ronaldo loves bingo, David Beckham likes fencing, Joe Allen saves chickens and other footballers’ hobbies

FOOTBALL may be these athletes’ lives, but even the dedicated pros like to switch off and do something completely different.
And there’s a list of bizarre hobbies these stars past and present love to do to unwind, from playing bingo to saving chickens or going mushroom hunting.

So, forget FIFA or a round of golf, like most spend their hours playing.
SunSport rounds up the most bizarre hobbies we’ve seen footballers admit doing.
We lead with a GOAT contender…
    CRISTIANO RONALDO
In his downtime, it’s true the Juventus legend spends most of his time sculpting his chiselled physique.

But, when he was an up-and-coming talent at Manchester United he developed a love of bingo.
He claimed it helped him learn English, although we’re still struggling to imagine him sat at a table in a Mecca Bingo in Sale.
“Playing bingo can be very exciting,” Ronaldo said in a 2008 interview.
“It can be very exciting because you can be there waiting for a long time for just the one number to make the game complete.

“Then you see one of your friends you are playing against get his lucky number before you.”

    DAVID BECKHAM
    En garde!
When Inter Miami owner Beckham hung about with Tom Cruise in Hollywood, they’d often fence together.
It was mutual friend actor Will Smith who made that reveal.
“This is his (Cruise’s) way of getting together and bonding,” Smith said.
“David and I go to his home and just do fencing.”

    JOE ALLEN
The Stoke and Wales international appeared on the front cover of Chicken & Egg magazine, happy to talk about his favourite pastime.
Allen and his wife save hens.
And he once revealed he owned chickens called Bruce, Rodney, Meg, Leg, Silkie Steve, Kate, Silkie Steve Junior, Giblets, Snowy, Nugget, Kiev, Dora, Holly, Shimmer, Shine and Chickaletta.
That’s not to be confused with the Stoke line-up tonight against Wolves.

    XAVI
The Barcelona icon is mad about mushrooms. And not them ones, before you get smart.
He’s got an obsession with mycology – better known as mushroom hunting, which is a first.
Pals Gerard Pique and his glam missus Shakira have reportedly joined Xavi on a trek for some rare shrooms.
“Someone who picks mushrooms can’t be a bad bloke,” his former boss Pep Guardiola once said.

    MATT OAKLEY
Watch out, they’ll bite your hands off!
Former Leicester City star Oakley’s strange and frankly dangerous hobby involved collecting South American red-bellied piranha.
“I wanted something unusual,” he said.
“They certainly make feeding time interesting.”

    TONI KROOS
    Spot of arrows, anyone?
Should you ask Real Madrid star Toni Kroos that question, he’ll likely snatch them off you and go straight for a treble 20.
The midfielder loves darts and is also a big fan of Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor.

In fact, he once tweeted: “This career is unrepeatable. Darts means @PhilTaylor!”

    MORITZ VOLZ
The former Arsenal and Fulham defender sounds like he’s destined for The Great British Bake Off.
And Volz, who now works as an assistant coach at RB Leipzig, enjoyed baking for his team-mates, often catering for the type of cake for the fixture ahead.
“When we played the big clubs like Arsenal or Manchester United, I made a biscuit-based cake with bananas and a dusting of green tea,” he once revealed.
“If we were playing against more rugged teams like Blackburn Rovers, I would made something a lot heavier, like carrot cake with nuts.”

    AXEL TUANZEBE
When your hobby is a kids’ game and you hold a world record in it, is that a cause for concern?
Not if you’re Manchester United defender Axel Tuanzebe, who is a whizz at Hungry Hippos.
“We have had a great day adjudicating a range of record attempts with the Manchester United football team as part of their collaboration with Guinness World Records,” said adjudicator Adam Brown.
“Axel Tuanzebe, was the bigger winner of the day and bagged himself the record for fastest time to clear a game of Hungry Hippos in a time of 17.36 seconds, beating competition from his fellow team-mates.”

    PETR CECH
It was inevitable that Cech would pick a hobby that was the polar opposite of the calm, mild demeanour that the Chelsea legend exudes.
But a quick click on YouTube and you’ll find clips of the ex-Arsenal keeper drumming along to rock anthems from the Foo Fighters and Nirvana.
    They say goalies are mad.
But any band will tell you that drummers are crazier.

    ANDREY ARSHAVIN
Believe it or not, before the former Arsenal star thought about a career in football he had ambitions to be a fashion designer.
Arshavin studied design at the university in Saint Petersburg, after switching from chemical technology because he complained there weren’t enough women on his course.
His thesis, quite brilliantly, was a suit that could be worn for both business and playing sport.
Today, he has a successful women’s fashion line in Russia.

    GABRIEL BATISTUTA
The legendary Argentinian striker was a legend for various clubs and country.
In 2005, after a stellar career, he hung up his boots.

But he wasn’t done just yet. He took up polo and became a winner in that -lifting the 2009 Copa Stella Artois with the Tom Tailor team.
“I went down like I used to throw myself about in the Roma area,” he joked about a fall he suffered during the event.
Sadly his ankles, shot to pieces after years of scything tackles by Serie A defenders, couldn’t handle it and he had to quit polo soon after.

Messi joined the billionaire boys club thanks to endorsement deals with the likes of Adidas, a hotel and clothing label

WHO wants to be a billionaire?
Not many sports stars past and present have made that staggering amount during their careers.

    13

Lionel Messi is football’s second ever billionaireCredit: Offside

But this week, Barcelona legend Lionel Messi topped Forbes’ richest athletes list and reached $1billion (£760million) in pre-tax earnings.
He is the second footballer to do so – following in the footsteps of rival Cristiano Ronaldo.
In his 16-years at the top, Messi, 33, has earned a mega salary playing for the Catalans and his bank balance has been boosted by endorsement deals.
On the top of that, he’s a hotelier, has a clothing line designed by Tommy Hilfiger’s sister and is set to open his own theme park.

Here’s how Messi made his fortune.
    A HEFTY SALARY
This summer, Messi toyed with the idea of leaving the Camp Nou, where he rose through the ranks.
However, the Argentinian performed a sensational u-turn and insisted he would stay for another year – and with the hefty salary he is paid, you can’t blame him.
When Messi became Barcelona’s talisman at the age of 20, he was handed a contract worth £90,000-per-week, which made him one of the best paid players in the team at that time.

But today, after winning La Liga 10 times and four Champions League titles, they have heavily rewarded their iconic star with more dough.

    13

Messi is the best paid star at Barcelona

    13

Incredibly, Messi can earn as much as £110million in a yearCredit: AP:Associated Press
Messi’s salary starts at £71million-per-year, but that doesn’t include bonuses for winning trophies.
Should he play 60 per cent of Barcelona’s games until 2021, when his contract ends, he can earn somewhere in the region of £98million.
And if he leads Barça to the treble, scooping the Ballon d’Or again (he has a record six already), that figure could be as much as an astonishing £110million for the year.
Bear in mind, with his contract ending at the end of the season, he could earn MORE should he leave for pastures new.
    SPONSOR ME
The clamour to sponsor one of the game’s greats, as well as a man who has become such a role model for youngsters, is clear.
That’s why Messi has some of the world’s most famous companies queuing up to endorse him.
He makes a mouth-watering £24million-per-year from endorsements alone, according to Forbes.
The biggest deal he has is a lifetime contract with Adidas he signed in 2017. That’s believed to bring in £9million each year.
The German sports manufacturer has made him the face of their brand – and in 2015 he was the first footballer to release a sub-brand of Adidas boots – the Adidas Messi.

As the years pass, and when Messi finally hangs up his boots, that could be just as lucrative for the forward as the Air Jordan sub-band Nike created for Michael Jordan (another sporting billionaire) is.
Pepsi, Gatorade, Huawei, Budweiser and Mastercard are other brands that have jumped on the Messi bandwagon.
    FASHION AND FAME
Last year, like Ronaldo, Messi made his first foray into the fashion world.
He released his clothing label, partnering with Ginny Hilfiger, and sells the range in his own shop, The Messi Store.
There, fashionistas can find leisurewear priced above high-street prices.
Bespoke Saville Row tailors Richard James also have a collaboration of fine suits through the Messi clothing line.
Maria Sol, Messi’s sister, is believed to play a major role in the creative process behind the range.

A Chinese theme park is in the works based on Messi’s career

    13

Messi Experience Park will feature various immersive exhibitions, live performances by robots and holograms
And Messi isn’t done with the thrill-seeking just yet.
Although details are sparse, development is still on-going for the Messi Experience Park – the world’s biggest football-themed park.
Based in China, it will feature various immersive exhibitions, live performances by robots and holograms, and will chronicle Messi’s rise from Rosario to global superstar.
    PLACE TO STAY
In 2017, Messi became a hotelier – buying the MiM Sitges in a coastal resort near Barcelona for £26million.
The four-star hotel with panoramic views of the ocean from its rooftop restaurant, bar and pool area has 77 rooms priced at around £120-per-night.
Close to the beach, it’s part of Messi’s growing portfolio of hotels.

    13

Messi has enough business ventures outside the game to continue to make a fortune after he retiresCredit: Instagram @antoroccuzzo88

In recent years he has added resorts in Majorca and Ibiza to his real estate roster.
With all these plans in place, Messi has business ventures that’ll bring him millions when his playing days are behind him.
In fact, his name will probably still prop up on Forbes’ rich list for years to come. More

How Cristiano Ronaldo’s partner Georgina Rodriguez went from £250-a-week shop girl to model mum and Instagram star

SHE’S one of the most famous Wags on the planet – but Cristiano Ronaldo’s partner Georgina Rodriguez hasn’t always lived a life of riches and luxury.
The 26-year-old Spanish model lived in a cramped, shared house and worked as a £250-a-week shop girl before a chance encounter with football legend Ronaldo transformed her life.

In a candid interview on ITV, Ronaldo, 35, describes finding “true love” with Georgina after the pair met for the first time at a Gucci store, where she was a sales assistant.
The Juventus star told Piers Morgan: “She helped me so much. Of course, I’m in love with her.”
Ronaldo, thought to be worth around £300million, added that it would be his mum Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro’s dream to see him and Georgina walk down the aisle.
“We’ll be [married] one day, for sure,” he said.

“It’s my mum’s dream as well. So, one day. Why not? It’s great. She’s my friend. We have conversations. I open the heart for her and she opens the heart for me.”

    Luxury holidays with four kids
Today, Georgina is raising Ronaldo’s four children –  their two-year-old daughter Alana Martina, surrogate twins Eva and Mateo, three, and ten-year-old Cristiano Jr – in Turin, Italy.
She lives a life most of us can only dream of – holidaying in Ibiza and Iceland, wearing head-to-foot Chanel and Gucci, and enjoying her boyfriend’s mega yacht and £1.75m sports cars.
She has also stood by Ronaldo after he was accused of raping a model in a Las Vegas hotel room – claims he has emphatically denied and which he will not face any criminal charges over.

But while Georgina could soon become Mrs Ronaldo, the Wag’s life used to be very different…

    Grafting for goals
The beauty hails from a very humble background, growing up in the tiny village of Jaca, northern Spain, with her Argentine former footballer father, Jorge, and Spanish mother, Ana.
As a child, she longed to be a ballet dancer. But because her parents couldn’t afford to send her to dance school, Georgina set her sights on a career in fashion retail instead.
It was clear from a young age that she was ambitious and like Ronaldo – who grew up in a tin-roofed house in Madeira – she did everything in her power to chase her dreams.

Living in a cramped house share
As soon as she was old enough, Georgina moved to Huesca, a small town an hour away, where she got her first job as a waitress.
However, she soon got bored of the town, and became fed up of living in a cramped home with several other young people.
Tired of her impoverished lifestyle,  Georgina moved again – this time three hours away to the seaside town of San Sebastian, where she got a job in mid-range shop, Massimo Dutti.
But despite earning more money, the draw of living the high life saw her make her next big move.
“I wanted to work in luxury and I understood that for that I had to speak English,” Georgina told XLSemanal.

    25

In 2012, aged just 17, Georgina flew to England and got a job as an au pair for a family in Bristol.
Here, she focused on learning English, earning around £9.50 an hour.
Once her language skills were up to scratch, she headed back to Spain to pursue her dreams of working in high-end retail in Madrid.

    “Love at first sight”
Georgina finally got her dream job as a saleswoman at Gucci in 2016 – and it was while she was working here that she caught former Real Madrid star Ronaldo’s eye.
Days later, the pair met again at another brand’s event, where they were able to “talk in a relaxed atmosphere”, outside of a work environment.
“It was love at first sight for both,” Georgina previously told the Sun on Sunday.

    Hounded by fans
The couple kept their relationship under wraps for the first few months, but once people found out they were dating, football fans started turning up at Georgina’s shop.
Bosses feared the fans, who were trying to take pictures, would put off their rich clientele, and Georgina was dismissed from her dream job in December 2016 after just eight months.
Ronaldo’s contacts got her another job in Prada in El Corte Ingles, the famous Spanish department store, where she earned about £1,000 a month plus commission.

But once again, her relationship cost her a job. Customers kept coming into the shop in the hope of spotting Ronaldo – and begged Georgina for selfies.
It wasn’t long before management and Georgina mutually agreed it was best if she left and stopped working for good.
Speaking about her experience, she told Spanish outlet, XLSemanal: “I was hiding, but fans were looking for me at the store. They used to call up and ask about me, pretending to be clients.
“There were always photographers waiting for me. The director told me to go down to the basement because he did not want to see me in the store. I started to be very uncomfortable and then I left.”

    Proud parents
In November 2017, Georgina gave birth to her and Ronaldo’s first daughter, Alana Martina – and revealed that the football star had spoiled her rotten.
She told Hola!: “When we got home from hospital, he’d organised a surprise dinner, with all our nearest and dearest. I felt like the luckiest woman in the world.”
Little Alana Martina joined Ronaldo’s adorable clan – with twins Eva and Mateo having been previously carried by a surrogate mother and Cristiano Jn being born to a mystery mother.
Today, Georgina is raising all the youngsters.

“I have always been mature and for me to have four children is not a burden,” she said.
“I wear it very well and, in fact, I no longer imagine my life without my children. It has definitely brought us closer. We’re happier together than ever. The children are our joy.”
Ronaldo has famously talked about wanting seven children.
However, Georgina has different ideas. When previously asked where she saw herself in 10 years, she said: “I do not see myself with more children.”

    25

    Georgina loves raising her family
From selling Gucci to wearing it
While Georgina used to sell designer clothes to the rich and famous, she’s now wearing them herself – from £1,400 Balmain jackets and £5,000 Chanel handbags to a priceless vintage fur coat.
She’s also living in a gated mansion in Turin – similar to the £5 million mansion she and Ronaldo used to share in Madrid (but a far cry from the flat she once lived in with pals).
Of course, Georgina is travelling in style too – jetting off in an £18 million private plane, sailing on a luxury yacht and driving sports cars like Ronaldo’s flashy Bugatti Veyron.
Since she began dating Ronaldo, Georgina has become a star in her own right, gracing the cover of Spanish Women’s Health and amassing millions of Instagram followers.

    A lavish wedding
If Ronaldo does fulfil his dream to wed Georgina “one day”, it will likely be a very grand affair.
Wedding expert and founder of Wedding Ideas Magazine Rachel Southwood told Sun Online: “She’ll probably wear a fit and flare dress that hugs her curves and kicks out at the bottom.
“It will be slinky and sexy but demure all at the same time – probably in lace, but possibly with some extra bling.

    25

“I think she will wear a long lace, scallop-edged veil. Something by a designer like Riki Dalal although I suspect it will be completely bespoke, from the head designer at one of the design houses she has worked with.
“Their wedding will be lavish and include a church service and a huge feast. It will be family-focused with a few big names thrown in for good measure.”
Rodriguez sparked engagement rumours in June when she showed off a huge ring in an Instagram post.
They have so far remain tight-lipped over plans but are expected to tie the knot in the near future.

    Running Ronaldo’s empire
But Georgina is very keen not to be perceived as a typical WAG.
She has previously said she has no interest in just shopping and spending Ronaldo’s money – in fact she might take a more active role in managing his vast fortune.

While most women spend their pregnancies decorating the nursery, Georgina spent hers studying financial accounting at the Centre for Financial Studies in Madrid.
Her course, which started in October 2017 and finished the following March, cost her £780 and saw her attend three-hour long classes twice a week.
According to El Mundo, it included modules on tax matters, legal obligations and wealth management.
“I loved earning money for myself and I never let myself be helped when someone offered to lend me a hand,” Georgina previously said.
“I am realistic and if I see that I can buy something not too expensive I do. If I can’t wear a Chanel, I buy a Zara. Why brag about something that does not belong to you?”

    25

Ronaldo and his family are living in Turin, northern Italy
Tens of millions in a divorce
When Georgina and Ronaldo eventually tie the knot, it’s unlikely the model will ever have to return to her shop girl job – even if they divorce.
Experts say all her financial worries would be taken care of in a pre-nup.
Head of Family Law in leading Manchester firm, JMW, Elspeth Kinder told Sun Online: “A prenup would make sure it provides fairly for Georgina’s needs and that of their child in the event of a divorce. It would be tens of millions – but it won’t be a half share of everything he’s got- that’s the point of the pre-nup.

“The Spanish jurisdiction in divorce is very different to here and tends to be less favourable to somebody like Georgina who comes to a marriage with less money than the other.”
Yet there’s no sign of trouble on the horizon for Ronaldo and Georgina.
“Being the partner of someone so famous is not easy but I wouldn’t change it for the world,” Georgina said. “What I feel for him is stronger than anything, any kind of pressure.”

‘Money’ regularly wows us with his amazing lifestyle, sharing video and photos inside his incredible homes, showing off his latest rides, as well as his expensive jewellery.
It’s a life he’s built all himself – being one of only six sportsman in the world ever to earn over $1billion (£760million) in his career – with reports saying it might be as much as £2.4billion.
Here’s where some of that money went…
    THREE AMAZING HOMES
Mayweather doesn’t skimp when it comes to property.

That’s why he’s got THREE incredible mansions dotted around the country – in LA, Las Vegas, and Miami.
His most recent purchase is his Nevada compound that cost a whopping £7.8million.
The undefeated boxing champ’s Vegas mansion features 11 bedrooms, 14 bathrooms, indoor and outdoor swimming pools and a gym.
There’s also a wine cellar and his own vineyard, as well as two detached underground garages that house his mega car collection – more to come on that later.

His LA abode in Beverly Hills set him back an eye-watering £19million.

Everton new boy Allan will give James Rodriguez the platform to create chances for Brazil star Richarlison

“I DON’T believe it,” posted broadcaster and veteran Everton fan Elton Welsby during Sunday’s 1-0 win at Tottenham.  “We’ve got a midfield, and a solid one at that.”
It was indeed an impressive start to the season for the most South American Everton of all time; with big Colombian defender Yerry Mina cleaning up in the air, Brazilian striker Richarlison full of thrust and threat – and in the midfield, the sector of the side so praised by Welsby, a pair of debutants who enjoyed a very promising afternoon.

Both are 29, both have worked before with coach Carlo Ancelotti. But there the similarities end.
    PRESENCE OF ALLAN
Allan, from Brazil, is not a glamorous player.  He is often valued more by coaches than he is by fans.
He does not do much to hit the headlines.  But he does plenty that is useful.
He is a little problem solver, spotting the danger, filling the gaps, linking the lines.

Brazil coach Tite, when he first brought Allan into his squad, said that the player has wheels instead of feet.
Come the end of last year Allan was fading from the international scene.
Casemiro is Brazil’s holding midfielder. Alongside him they need someone who can offer more in the final third than Everton’s new signing.
But that is not going to be a problem in Ancelotti’s team – not least because of the presence of James Rodriguez.

GETTING THE BEST OUT OF JAMES
The Colombian played a splendid 90 minutes, reminding everyone that the star who lit up the 2014 World Cup has not gone away.
The Real Madrid move did not come off.
There is only space for so many players to shine at the Bernabeu – and Rodriguez lacked the extreme pace to be one of them.
Even so, in the right circumstances, he can exude confidence and quality.
His displays for Colombia, where he thrives on being the go-to player, have consistently been of a high standard.
After his triumph of 2014, the problem in Russia 2018 was his fitness – which, it is true to say, has been a nagging doubt in recent years.
He was only able to play one full game – when Colombia’s 3-0 win over Poland was one of the best performances of the tournament.
Had he been fit for the second round tie with England, then Colombia would surely have been more positive and Jordan Pickford would have had more to do.
Now they are team-mates, Pickford can enjoy watching Rodriguez from between his goal posts.
And Richarlison will also enjoy lining up with the Colombian.
Time and again on Sunday Rodriguez was able to bring the Brazilian into the game with long diagonal passes – a left footed version of the kind of service that Liverpool right back Trent Alexander-Arnold supplies to his team-mates.

Future opponents will have watched closely, and will aim to block the pass by forcing Rodriguez on to his right foot.
    But James is versatile.
He can operate all across the line, even, as he sometimes did at Bayern Munich, playing in a deeper central role and popping up as an element of surprise.
With Allan carrying the water, and Rodriguez turning it into wine, Elton Welsby and other Everton fans have a lot to look forward to over the next few months.
