The Barcelona midfielder showed off a swollen hand in his side’s 3-1 win over Napoli in a Champions League tie.
According to reports, the ailment was the result of a nasty bee sting that caused the severe reaction.
That’s prompted SunSport to look back at some of the weird and wacky injuries to befall other footballers over the years.CHRIS SMALLING
Ex-Manchester United defender Chris Smalling was on holiday in Bali, when disaster struck.
After local reports claimed he was stung by a jellyfish while out surfing – the truth eventually came out, and it wasn’t as exciting.
He fainted in the hot heat and banged his head, hence the bandages.

    DAVE BEASANT
The Wimbledon FA Cup hero was at Chelsea when he suffered a hilarious foot injury.
The keeper dropped a bottle of salad cream in his kitchen and tried to control it with his bare foot.
The bottle ended up breaking and tearing a tendon in his big toe, causing Beasant to miss two months of football. Clearly, he should’ve used his hands.

    RIO FERDINAND
The former Manchester United and England captain managed to strain his knee while at Leeds.
Ferdinand rested his leg for too long while playing a game of Pro Evolution Soccer on his PlayStation.
    We’ve all done it.

    DAVID BATTY
The ex-Leeds United enforcer had been out injured with a knee problem.
Then, his two-year-old daughter ran over him while on her tricycle – causing a setback to his ankle.
The hardman was crocked by a two-year-old, which must’ve taken some explaining to his team-mates.
David Batty’s daughter ran into him on her tricycle
    BRYAN ROBSON
Captain Dynamo was given the task of trying to wake mercurial star Paul Gascoigne from his slumber ahead of the 1990 World Cup.
Robson tried but couldn’t wake the midfielder, instead tipping the bed to push Gascoigne out.
Robson then dropped the bed onto his toe, breaking it.

    ENNER VALENCIA
The former West Ham forward didn’t impress Sam Allardyce with this injury.
Somehow, Enner Valencia managed to badly cut his toe after stepping on a broken cup.
The incident left ‘Big Sam’ striker-less for his next match.
Enner Valencia seriously cut his toe stepping on a broken cup
    SANTIAGO CANIZARES
The former Valencia NO1 had waited an age to take over in the sticks of the Spanish national team.
He was given an opportunity in 2002, but just before the World Cup was about to start he dropped a bottle of aftershave on his foot.
Like Beasant, he severed a tendon and missed the tournament. Butter fingers, perhaps?
Santiago Canizares missed out on the 2002 World Cup because of a bottle of aftershave
    ALAN WRIGHT
The former Aston Villa left-back was a cult hero in the Midlands.
But the 5ft 4in Wright once had a spell out the game after injuring his knee in the strangest way.
He did it trying to reach the pedals on his Ferrari. True story.
Former Aston Villa defender Alan Wright got injured driving his Ferrari
    KEVIN KYLE
While at Sunderland, the former Scotland international was once seen ‘walking a bit like John Wayne’.
It was all because his eight-month-old son knocked a bowl of boiling water onto his crotch.
    Ouch.
Kevin Kyle’s son dropped hot water on his crotch
    LEROY LITA
At Reading, the striker managed to hurt his back by stretching too vigorously.
But this wasn’t done on the training pitch, no.
It happened while laying in bed.
Steve Coppell said at the time: “It’s not an injury that should be ridiculed or made light of.”
Leroy Lita injured himself by stretching too far in bed
    DARIUS VASSELL
We’d definitely avoid recreating this one.
The ex-Aston Villa and England striker tried to get rid of a blood blister on his toe by using an electric drill.
    It didn’t go well.
Darius Vassell tried to pop a blister with an electric drill
    ADAM CHAPMAN
Former Oxford midfielder Chapman was heating some milk for his baby, a normally harmless job.
But as he went to shake it the lid flew off, burning his chest and nipple.
He had to go to hospital but was passed fit to play the next day.
Adam Chapman burnt his nipple trying to heat baby milk
    DAVID JAMES
The former England shot-stopper has two entries.
He once pulled a muscle in his back while trying to reach for a remote control.
Another time, James hurt his shoulder while fishing for carp.
David James should stay away from remote controls… and carp

    CHARLIE GEORGE
Arsenal legend George didn’t let this injury stop him. The 1971 FA Cup hero once cut off a finger with his lawnmower.
    Thankfully, it wasn’t a leg.
Charlie George managed to cut off a finger while mowing the lawn
    KIERON DYER
When at Newcastle the England man damaged his left eye – because he ran into a stationary training pole.
It wasn’t an eye-for-an-eye in this case, leaving Dyer with a nasty shiner.

Footballers who have taken the Tube, from ex-Arsenal star Mesut Ozil to the German national team and Tottenham’s Dier

FOOTBALLERS… sometimes they’re just like us.Former Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil showed what a regular guy he was by taking the Tube for a sightseeing tour before he left out shores for Turkey.
Mesut Ozil isn’t the only footballer to take the TubeCredit: Instagram @m10_official
But the German star isn’t the first footballer to brave the rush hour crowd and take a trip on the London Underground.
Messrs Dier, Eriksen and Zaha have all charged up their Oyster cards and got on a train.
And there’s an honourable mention for former Spurs manager Christian Gross who bragged about getting the Tube to his first press conference as Tottenham boss. A pioneer in these circles. The German national team

Before they played England in an international friendly at Wembley back in 2013, Per Mertesacker, Mats Hummels and manager Joachim Low tried the underground.
They ventured on the Bakerloo Line, talking to other commuters and did the best to fit in with the locals.
They said they did it to escape the congested streets of London, and the German FA were delighted it was their first time on the Tube.
Apparently, they changed at Baker Street, had a nosey at the Sherlock Holmes museum before heading to the Metropolitan Line to get to Wembley Park.

    Christian Eriksen and Eric Dier
Because it’s always best for footballing team-mates to travel in pairs.
Former Spurs star Eriksen and his pal Dier were snapped a day after celebrating a 4-1 win over Sunderland in 2016 on the Tube.
They seemed in jovial spirits as they joked with each other and passengers, happily posing for snaps.
No word on where they got off, but they were enjoying some downtime before a crucial game against Leicester.

    Wilfried Zaha
The Palace winger uses his dazzling feet to good effect on the pitch, so he definitely should’ve paid attention to those ‘Mind the Gap’ announcements.
After a game against Manchester City in 2016 at the Etihad, Zaha was seen completing the final leg of his journey home on the Tube.
Better still, he even wore his full kit – just so he couldn’t be missed.
And like a seasoned traveler, he had some headphones on and wasn’t ready to talk to any other commuters, preferring to keep to himself.

    Juan Mata
    You would’ve thought they’d lay on a car…
Before Spanish international Mata joined Man United, he was snapped getting on the Tube to get a connecting train to Manchester in 2014.
But he clearly wasn’t a Tube regular, oh no, no, no, because he was wrapped up far too warm. Everyone knows how sweaty you can get underground.
    He should’ve ditched the hat!

    Joey Barton
    He’s just a regular Joe now…
The former Man City midfielder turned manager showed he’s just like one of us when he was pictured getting on the train back in 2014.
One keen fan decided to share his snap on Twitter, telling the world Joey was ‘slumming it’ but we think it’s commendable.
However, not too sure of the John Lennon-style breton cap though.

    Peter Crouch
There would definitely be far more comfortable ways for the big man to travel!
‘Crouchy’ was spied squeezing his 6’7″ frame into a carriage shortly after announcing his missus Abbey Clancy was expecting their third child.
Arsenal star Mesut Ozil becomes London tourist for the day as he takes tube on day off-
Trying to go as incognito as possible, Peter wore a baseball cap over his face and a white shirt to seem like an every man.
It was a busy Friday night, but that didn’t stop Peter enjoying his ride though on the Northern Line.

    Hatem Ben Arfa
When the Frenchman was plying his trade at Newcastle United in 2014, he thought he’d give the Tube a go.
Shortly after wearing the black and white of the Toon, he topped up his Oyster card and touched into the Underground.
One eager fan managed to get a snap with his hero, even hashtag calling the midfielder a ‘#toplad’ for his efforts.
Ben Arfa doesn’t look that thrilled to have been spotted though.

    Marc Albrighton
When the Leicester City wide man was at Aston Villa, he made one young fan’s day by posing for a snap.
Albrighton was traveling on the Tube, presumably the District and Hammersmith and City lines, after a game against West Ham United.
Good on Albrighton for happily smiling for a photo, as well as taking the Tube like a normal fan in 2012.

    Joe Ledley and Martin Kelly
Palace full back Kelly and former Eagle Joe Ledley took on the commoners route by going underground.
The pair were tickled pink when they were spotted and snapped sat down in their full sports regala on the Tube in 2015.
But by the looks of Kelly attentively gazing at the Underground map, he needed to have a good look to see where he was going.

    Vlad Chiriches
    You would never recognise him…
The former Spurs centre half could’ve gone completely unnoticed on the Tube if one eagle-eyed fan hadn’t sneaked this picture.
Casually dressed in a hoodie and jeans, with his earphones plugged into his ears, Chiriches seemed at ease on the train in 2014.
In fact, we’ve never seen him look so comfortable in North London.

    Lewis Holtby
While on loan at Fulham, the German midfielder endeared himself to The Cottagers faithful by taking the Tube home after a game.
After all, he just starred in a 1-0 win over Newcastle back in 2014 and wanted to share a snap of himself being a regular punter.
He wrote for the caption: “What a Relief!! Very happy to have won today:-))) as u probably notice “smile””Still.. Next Station, Home!;-))))) Thx for The brillant Support, amazing Spirit at craven cottage!” Legend.

    Christian Gross
    The modern day Tube pioneer.
When Christian Gross took up his post at Tottenham Hotspur in 1997 he decided he would take the Tube to his press conference.
Proud of his efforts, he then told a pack of journalists (proudly flashing his travelcard) and calling it “the ticket of his dreams.”
A year later he was sacked, but we’ll never forget that moment.

    Oriol Romeu
A cheeky pretender to the crown…
The Southampton midfielder had a pop at Mesut Ozil’s Tube snap by posting his own on Instagram.

Romeu even slyly captioned the pic, where he looked moody, “Doing Ozil’s things” with a winking face emoji, as well as a train emoji.
Maybe Romeu had the hump because no one recognised him?

    Roberto Mancini
When our SunSport reporter Gary Stonehouse spotted Roberto Mancini on the Tube, he couldn’t wait to get a snap.
We spied the Italian don heading to Wembley for his former club Man City’s semi-final clash with Arsenal.
“Legend” Mancini posted for pictures with fans, telling one he wanted to be Arsenal manager next season.
He also gave our Gary some great Tube banter.

Best wonderkids in football, from ‘Next Neymar’ and Man Utd target Gabriel Veron to England hope Jude Bellingham

THEY are the stars of tomorrow who will be contesting the Ballon d’Or in years to come. These 11 wonderkids are blessed with incredible talent that should mean they have incredible careers.
England wonderkid Jude Bellingham has exploded onto the scene at Borussia DortmundCredit: AFP
From midfield generals to flying wingers and goalscoring phenomenons, the best is yet to come from these boy wonders starring for club and country.
Let SunSport introduce you to the 12 best teenagers set to dominate on the world stage.
    GABRIEL VERON
The Palmeiras forward, 18, has already attracted interest from Manchester United, who are desperate to bring the Brazilian to Old Trafford.
Nicknamed ‘Bolt’ by his team-mates, because of his extreme, Veron has been labelled the ‘next Neymar’.
With the winger having a £53million release clause in his contract, it will take a lot to prise him away from Brazil.
He already has 10 goals to his name in 35 games for his club in all competitions.

    EDUARDO CAMAVINGA
A full international for World Cup holders France, Camavinga, 18, is wanted by Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.
The 6ft star is not only accomplished on the ball, he’s tough in the tackle and runs all day – making him the ideal midfield general.
Currently running things from the centre of the park for Rennes, it is expected Camavinga will move on this summer.
However, someone will have to stump up over £50million to buy him.

    PEDRI
Pedri has been one of the bright sparks of a troubled season for Barcelona.
The Catalans signed the central midfielder from Las Palmas in 2019 for around £4million.
Early comparisons to Andres Iniesta are, perhaps, a little premature – but Ronaldo Koeman has placed his faith in the youngster, 18, who has appeared 42 times for the LaLiga giants this season.
Spain boss Luis Enrique also gave Pedri his first international call-up last month for the World Cup qualifiers, and he played in all three against Greece, Georgia and Kosovo.

    JUDE BELLINGHAM
When you watch Bellingham play, it’s incredible to think he’s only 17.
The level of maturity he offers in central midfield, understanding the defensive side of the game as much as he does going forward is simply amazing.
Since leaving our shores for Borussia Dortmund from Birmingham City in a £30million deal, Bellingham has continued to prosper.
A complete midfielder like Bryan Robson, Bellingham WILL become an England hero in the future.

    JAMAL MUSIALA
One that England and Chelsea might regret losing.
Musiala recently chose to represent Germany instead of the Three Lions and was signed from Chelsea’s famed youth academy in 2019 by Bayern Munich.
With the Bundesliga giants Musiala, 18, has already shown incredible footwork out wide, as well as a penchant for scoring brilliant goals.
Last month, the Bavarians tied him down to his first pro contract after an amazing breakthrough campaign.

    YOUSSOUFA MOUKOKO
Moukoko is so good, the German FA changed the rules and agreed to drop the minimum age a player can make his debut in the Bundesliga to 16, just so he could appear this season.
And back in November, the incredible striker made his debut as an 85-minute sub for Erling Haaland – just a day after he turned 16 – and became the youngest player to play in the Bundesliga.
Then in December, Moukoko broke the record for youngest ever Bundesliga goalscorer when he netted against Hertha Berlin.
His season, however, has been unfortunately ended due to a foot injury.

    FLORIAN WIRTZ
The Bayer Leverkusen ace’s emergence softened the blow of losing Kai Havertz to Chelsea.
A 17-year-old attacking midfielder, he previously was the youngest Bundesliga goalscorer ever until Moukoko came along.
Originally, he was part of a Cologne team that won the German U17 Championship in 2019, and almost joined Liverpool.
Wirtz already has five Bundesliga goals to his name… Havertz who?

    GIO REYNA
Gio is the son of ex-Sunderland favourite Claudia Reyna, but it’s fair to say he’s nothing like his dad was as a player.
A dynamic winger, quick and boasting close control, the 18-year-old showed his class on the international stage recently with a goal against Northern Ireland.
For Borussia Dortmund he’s formed a brilliant partnership with Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho.
And while his form has tailed off a little in recent months, with Reyna admitting fatigue, there’s still plenty more to come from the US star.

    ANSU FATI
When you’ve been called the ‘heir to Messi’s throne’, that’s some pressure on your young shoulders.
And in the case 18-year-old Fati, who added to the intrigue surrounding him by becoming the club’s youngest ever goalscorer in 2019, that tag really is justified.
The young forward had five goals in 10 games before his season was cut short after he tore his meniscus on his left knee in a game against Real Betis in November.
Already capped four times by Spain, he is widely regarded as the future of Spanish football.

    RYAN GRAVENBERCH
The ‘Dutch Patrick Vieira’, Gravenberch is one of the best players Holland has produced in years.
The 6ft 3in holding midfielder, 18, has starred for Ajax this season, as they look certain to win the Eredivisie and are challenging for the Europa League.
A stunning goal in the Champions League against Midtjylland brought him to wider attention.
His style of play would make him a star on our shores.

    RAYAN CHERKI
Lyon is a hot-bed for producing talented footballers, just look at Houssem Aouar and Nabil Fekir’s rise.

And in Cherki, 17, they’ve got a new starlet, who has been tipped to emulate Kylian Mbappe.
So far, he has three goals this term in 22 games and was interesting Manchester United and Real Madrid before he penned a deal with the French club.
Incredibly, he was discovered playing football in a car park by a Lyon youth coach.

Biggest training ground bust-ups, from Rudiger and Kepa being ‘pulled apart’ to Hartson aiming kick at Berkovic’s head

FIRST team places at Chelsea are hard to come by, so it’s no surprise over-eager stars might let their competitive streak get the better of them.Antonio Rudiger and Kepa Arrizabalaga were reportedly ‘pulled apart’ during an Easter Sunday training session, when the German centre half was said to have gone in late on the Spaniard.

The towering defender was sent home early by manager Thomas Tuchel, and it’s the first time tempers have flared on a training ground – as these cases show.
    STERLING VS GOMEZ
Gareth Southgate already had enough on his plate without this food fight.
England’s preparations for their Euro qualifiers were hit by friendly fire as Raheem Sterling and Joe Gomez clashed in the canteen back in 2019.
Manchester City star Sterling was dropped for the Montenegro clash after the canteen bust-up, which happened after Liverpool beat City in a title showdown.
The winger admitted later that “emotions got the better of him” and apologised in the fight that left the Reds defender with a scratch under his eye.
Gomez recently opened up about the difficult time he had, but said things between the two were now better.

    NEYMAR VS SEMEDO
As the phrase goes; don’t poke the bear.
In his first training session at Barcelona, an eager-to-impress Nelson Semedo was the unfortunate recipient of a nutmeg from Brazilian trickster Neymar during a keep-ball session.
The defender hated being mugged off by his team-mate and the pair locked horns before Sergio Busquets and Samuel Umtiti intervened.
But Neymar was livid, he threw his bib off and stormed away from the training ground.
A few days later, the forward was packing his bags for PSG.
When Neymar nutmegged Semedo in training the pair squared up to each other
    CARROLL VS TAYLOR
6ft 4in Andy Carroll certainly looks like someone you wouldn’t mess with.
But when his former Newcastle team-mate Steven Taylor started texting his ex-girlfriend back in 2010 without telling him all hell broke lose.
Carroll confronted the defender after flying into a rage and threw a fist at Taylor’s jaw, ruling him out for the rest of the season.
Rather than condemn Carroll for his actions, Magpies fans sided with their top goalscorer when they learned what Taylor had done.
Newcastle still won the Championship title that year without their key centre half, so no harm was done in the end.

    HARTSON VS BERKOVIC
One of the most infamous training ground brawls of all-time.
Back in 1998, burly Wales legend John Hartson and Israel international Eyal Berkovic bit at each other during a warm-up game.
After the midfielder hit out at Hartson, the burly centre forward retaliated with a powerful kick to Berkovic’s jaw.
“If my head had been a ball, it would have been in the top corner of the net,” Berkovic said.
But on reflection, Hartson wasn’t proud of that moment – calling it the most shameful thing he’s ever done during his career.
He was fined £20,000 at the time and given a three-match ban.

    MITROVIC VS KAMARA
And they say yoga is meant to have a calming influence on the soul.
Tempers flared at Fulham when Aleksandar Mitrovic and Aboubakar Kamara got into a fight during a team yoga session in 2019.
Then-manager Claudio Ranieri was left stunned as team-mates rushed in to separate the fiery pair.
It was said to have started because Mitrovic thought Kamara was being disrespectful to the yoga teacher.
The incident happened just weeks after Kamara wrestled the ball off Mitrovic when Fulham were awarded a penalty against Bournemouth in a crunch game.
Kamara missed, and that’s when the alleged bad blood began.

    LJUNBERG VS MELBERG
Swedish stars Freddie Ljungberg and Olof Melberg were already used to kicking lumps out each other in the Premier League, so why they did that again while training for their country we don’t know.
But when the former Aston Villa defender put in a robust challenge on the Arsenal legend, the winger didn’t take kindly to it and pushed Melberg.
The incident threw Sweden’s 2002 World Cup preparations into chaos, and caused uproar in the camp.
Four years later, the pair were at it again – arguing over tactics for Sweden’s opening match against Trinidad and Tobago at the 2006 World Cup, which ended in a goalless draw.
Ljungberg said that the two had avoided a violent confrontation this time round and the Swedish FA called it a “short, hot dispute.”

    BALOTELLI VS MANCINI
He tried as hard as he could, but Mancini struggled with his fellow Italian at Man City and could never tame him.
But Balotelli didn’t exactly make it easy either.
When the striker flew into a late and unnecessary tackle on Scott Sinclair, his boss was livid.
Mancini grabbed Balotelli and tried to drag him off the playing field, much to the astonishment of the rest of the City players.
It was the second incident involving Balotelli on the training ground after he got in a scuffle with Micah Richards two years earlier.
A month after the incident Balotelli was sold to AC Milan, although Mancini did include the explosive forward in his first Italian squad years later.

    IBRAHIMOVIC VS ONYEWU
If this was a boxing contest, it would certainly have been in the heavyweight division.
When Taekwondo black-belt Zlatan was at AC Milan, he got into a spat with 6ft 3in American defender Oguchi Onyewu.
“It was like life and death,” the Swede wrote in his autobiography.
“I head-butted him, and we flew at each other. We wanted to tear each other limb from limb. It was brutal.
“We were rolling around, punching and kneeing each other. All the time, I was thinking: ‘s***, my chest hurts,’ so we had it checked out.”
Zlatan broke a rib in the tussle, while Onyewu was sold at the end of the season without making a single appearance for the Italian giants.

    BARTON VS DABO
Well before Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel was allegedly on the receiving end of a Barton headbutt that knocked his two front teeth out, the former Man City midfielder aimed a dig at his fellow pro.
When Ousmane Dabo pushed Barton during a training session, the now Fleetwood Town manager let him know he wasn’t happy about it.

A flurry of punches left Dabo with a black eye and a damaged retina.
An official complaint was filled and Barton was given a £3,000 fine, as well as a four-month suspended jail sentence.
The FA also fined Barton £25,000 and he was handed a six-match ban.

The new arrival makes for a remarkable family tree – starting with Bernie at the top, his children and then his grandchildren.
SunSport breaks it down for you, in full.
    BERNIE ECCLESTONE, 90
The patriarch of the family, Bernie was born in Suffolk in 1930.
Worth £2.5billion, Ecclestone had been associated with F1 since the 1950s – during the 1958 season he entered two Grand Prix races, but failed to qualify for either.
In 1972 he became a team-owner, acquiring Brabham, which he ran for 15 years.
Two years later, Ecclestone formed the Formula One Constructors Association, emerging as chief executive in 1978.
In 2017, Bernie was removed from his position after the Formula One Group was taken over by Liberty Media.
Not bad for the son of a fisherman, who left Dartford West Central Secondary School at 16 and first worked as an assistant in a chemical laboratory testing gas purity.

    IVY BAMFORD, FIRST WIVE
Not much is known about Bernie’s early years, when he ran motorcycle shops and car dealerships.
His first wife, a local girl called Ivy, was believed to be two years older than the businessman when they married in 1952.
They welcomed daughter Deborah three years later, but the marriage fell to pieces and they drifted apart.
It’s unknown if Ivy, who would be 91 today, is alive.
    SLAVICA RADIC, WIFE NO2
Bernie married the 6ft 2in former Armani model Slavica in 1985, three years after they met at a promotional event at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza.
Despite the height difference (Slavica stands a foot taller than Bernie), a language barrier, and an age gap of 28 years they remained married for 23 years.
In 2009, she topped the Sunday Times’ Rich List in the “richest divorcees” category – getting a reported £740million settlement.

    FABIANA FLOSI, WIFE NO3
Not much is known about the 45-year-old Brazilian.
But Bernie met Fabiana in 2009 at the World Motor Sport Council, marrying three years later in a private ceremony at their £23million Swiss chalet in Gstaad.
She helps run his coffee plantation in Brazil, where their brand Celebrity Coffee is produced.
In 2016, her mum Aparecida Schunk was kidnapped and a ransom of £28million was demanded.
Nine days later, she was found safe.
Last week, they welcomed their first son together, baby Ace.

    DEBORAH, ELDEST DAUGHTER, 66
Deborah has preferred to stay out of the limelight, despite her famous family connection.
The only child from Bernie’s first marriage, she is said to have followed her dad into business.
It is believed she has two children of her own.
However, their names and ages are unknown.
    TAMARA, 37
Bernie’s first child with Slavica, Tamara has dabbled with modelling, presenting and reality TV.
For the 2009 F1 season, she presented motorsport coverage for Sky Sports Italia.
In 2011 she starred in Tamara Ecclestone: Billion $$$ Girl on Channel 5 and then in ITVBe’s Tamara’s World in 2017.

Arguably the more famous of Bernie’s socialite daughters with Slavica, Petra is now based in Los Angeles.
At 19, she launched menswear label FORM, which was sold in Harrods.

Her personal life was splashed across the front pages after an acrimonious £5.5 billion divorce row with ex-husband James Stunt, who she split with in 2017.
She was granted sole custody of their three children, Lavinia, 7, and twins James and Andrew, both 5.
And last May, Petra gave birth to a baby girl with fiancé Sam Palmer, but has remained tight-lipped on her name, which gives Bernie seven grandchildren ALL younger than his latest child.

Inside the life of Man Utd legend Roy Keane – from 20-year marriage to wife Theresa to his controversial playing career

ON the pitch, he was the enforcer at Nottingham Forest, Man Utd and CelticOff it, he’s a milder family man, loyal husband of wife of 20-years Theresa, father of five kids and a generous son.

In recent years, Roy Keane, 49, has reinvented himself as a TV pundit on Sky Sports – championed for his sharp analysis, rapport with Micah Richards and wicked sense of humour.
He has now thrown his hat into the ring for the vacant Celtic manager’s job, and is one of the hot favourites for the role.
But, away from football, the Ireland legend lives a very private life.
    THERESA DOYLE
Last month Keane surprised us all when he set up an Instagram page, where he’s uploaded pictures of his family, including his grandchildren.
Still missing from it, though, is his wife of 20-years, Theresa Doyle.
The pair met in 1992, when the midfielder was playing for Forest under Brian Clough.
“I spotted a beautiful girl in a club in town. Her name was Theresa Doyle but she blanked me,” Keane once revealed of his encounter with the Nottingham-born beauty.
“She was in a steady relationship and didn’t seem at all impressed by Roy Keane, the great footballer. In fact, I think my reputation was as a downer for all kinds of reasons.
“From time to time we ran into each other around Nottingham. I knew some of her friends, who told me Theresa was a dentist’s assistant.

“Eventually, after her relationship broke up, she relented and we went out together. I was in love.”
They got married in a private ceremony at the Church of Our Lady Crowned in Mayfield, Cork, where Keane is from.
Keane rarely mentions his wife in public, but once opened up about their relationship in a revealing interview with the Sunday Times in the early 2000s.
“I don’t really mention her in public, but in fairness to her, she has been a rock in my life. Just brilliant. She reads me better than I read myself,” Keane said.
“I wouldn’t say Theresa likes every part of the package. She knows I haven’t got a halo over my head. Actually, that’s what she likes about me. She also knows I am not the nastiest person in the world.”
    FIVE CHILDREN
Keane and Theresa have five children together, Shannon, Caragh, Aidan, Leah and Alanna.
Even though the former footballer has tasted plenty of success on the football pitch, nothing comes close to spending time with his family.

In his autobiography, when writing about winning the Champions League in 1999, Keane said he “longed to go home to Theresa and the kids” and wasn’t interested in celebrating with his team-mates.
However, despite his wish to spend more time with them after hanging up his boots, he previously admitted that they wanted him to get back to work after just two months.
“My plan when I first stopped was, we’re going to go on some family trips, we’re going to be like the Waltons,” Keane joked.
“We’re all going to spend time together, go walk in the park and after a month or two they didn’t have the same plan as me so I think they were kind of missing me going to work.
“I got offered the job at Sunderland and I was away on a family holiday and my family were looking at me… not saying it directly but going we kind of enjoy your company but not too much of it so when the job came back up they were saying you should go for it.”
    MEET THE PARENTS
Roy’s late father Maurice ‘Mossie’ Keane met his mum Marie at a local dance, and they married in 1963.
They moved to the Mayfield suburb in Cork, where they raised five children, Denis, Johnson, Hilary, Roy and Pat.

Keane always shared a close bond with his parents and regularly made sure they had tickets to watch his games at Forest and United.
The generous son also bought them a home in the countryside in nearby Rathpeacon.
In 2019, Keane was devastated when his Maurice passed away after battling illness. He was 79.
    AS A PLAYER
When Keane was a schoolboy, he began playing football for local side Rockmount AFC.
From there, he moved to Irish First Division team Cobh Ramblers of County Cork in 1989.
Keane was spotted by ex-scout Noel McCabe, who immediately recommended the talent to Brian Clough.
After impressing on a trial, he moved to Nottingham in 1990 and blossomed into one of the best young midfielders in the country.

Sir Alex Ferguson brought Keane to Manchester United in 1993 for a British transfer record fee of £3.75million.
Keane went on to become one of the Premier League giants’ greatest captains – winning seven Premier League titles, a Champions League, as well as four FA Cups.
He retired in 2006, after one season in Scotland at Celtic where he played 10 times.
    IRISH FALLOUT
Keane’s career has been rocked by scandal over the years.
But nothing hurt more than missing the greatest football competition in the world in 2002.
Keane played 65 times for Ireland between 1991-2005, but his international career is unfortunately remembered for his fallout with Mick McCarthy before the 2002 World Cup.
Keane wasn’t happy with the Irish team’s set-up ahead of the prestigious football tournament and left the training camp.

After a confrontation with McCarthy at the team hotel, he flew home and was famously quizzed by reporters about his acrimonious exit while walking his dog near his home.
Without him, Ireland managed to reach the last-16 before they were beaten by Spain on penalties.
    AS A MANAGER
Now linked with Celtic, Keane has had previous experience managing a club – all with varied success.
His first job at Sunderland was actually a success in the light of day. He took over the Mackems in 2006 when they second bottom of the Championship.
In his first season, they managed to win the league and gain promotion. But he stood down from his post before Christmas – with Sunderland struggling in 18th position in the Premier League.

Then came a spell at Ipswich, where he failed in a promotion bid and was sacked in 2011.
Keane returned to the international fold as assistant manager to Martin O’Neill, and was a key member of the coaching set-up that saw Ireland qualify Euro 2016.
O’Neill and Keane left their jobs after a series of inconsistent results left their jobs hanging by a thread – and reunited briefly at Forest in 2019.

Best players to miss out on playing for England in major tournaments, includes Le Tissier, Merson and Gazza

IT has left England boss Gareth Southgate with quite the dilemma. The re-emergence of Jesse Lingard, who is starring on-loan at West Ham, could mean Aston Villa playmaker Jack Grealish or Borussia Dortmund starlet Jadon Sancho getting snubbed for the upcoming Euros.

Lingard was recently recalled by the Three Lions for the World Cup qualifiers against San Marino, Albania and Poland.
While Sancho hasn’t been as consistent this term in the Bundesliga, and Grealish has struggled with injury of late after a long, hard impressive season.
But should Sancho and Grealish miss out on selection, they won’t be the first big name to be left at home for a major tournament.
Here’s seven more that could’ve counted themselves unlucky at the time to miss out.
    RIO FERDINAND
In 2012, aged 33, it’s fair to say Rio was past the peak of his powers.
However, he did still offer a wise and experienced head at the back, and had come off a decent season for Manchester United.
But Ferdinand was left “gutted” to have been left out of England’s Euro 2012 squad.
Manager Roy Hodgson explained the decision was made for footballing reasons, but Ferdinand’s omission did avoid any potential conflict with the selected John Terry, who months later faced allegations in court that he racially abused Rio’s brother, Anton.

“I admire Rio Ferdinand as a player,” Hodgson explained. “I think he’s a fine footballer and I respect him, but I had to pick a squad with defenders I wanted to take to the Euros.”
Phil Jones and Joleon Lescott got nods ahead of Ferdinand.
    PAUL GASCOIGNE
Ex-England boss Glenn Hoddle once described it as the “saddest thing he ever had to do.”
After Gazza was instrumental in helping his country in the qualifiers, he was told he wouldn’t be going to France ’98.
The hero two-years earlier at Euro ’96, Gascoigne was given an ultimatum about his fitness. But Hoddle felt he just wasn’t up to it.
According to reports, Gazza smashed up Hoddle’s hotel room when he was told the news.
The mercurial midfielder was never picked for England again.

    PAUL MERSON
Although Merse got the nod ahead of Gazza for France ’98, he could count himself unlucky not to have gone to Italia ’90.
In fine fine form at Arsenal, and only 22, the ‘Magic Man’ won the PFA Young Player of the Year Award in 1989.
But Bobby Robson only picked three forwards for the World Cup, with the striking positions being taken by Gary Lineker, Peter Beardsley and Steve Bull.
Nine midfielders were selected, including a relatively unknown Gazza and Bryan Robson, who struggled with injury and missed the majority of the competition.
In 1989 Paul Merson was the best young player in the country, but that didn’t get him an England call-up a year later for Italia ’90Credit: Getty – Contributor
    MATT LE TISSIER
Arguably, the most talented footballer of his generation it’s criminal Le Tissier didn’t get the international recognition he deserved.
Possibly, because he played for an unfashionable club in Southampton at the time, might’ve been why he was overlooked.
But the Saints legend only managed eight caps in his career, despite scoring 209 goals for his club.
Had England qualified for the 1994 World Cup, he might’ve had a chance of being selected.
He was also overlooked for the 1998 World Cup, even after impressing in an England B game against Russia – scoring a hat-trick.
A hat-trick playing England B against Russia wasn’t enough to earn Matt Le Tissier a place in the squad for the 1998 World CupCredit: Empics
    TONY ADAMS
Experience, perhaps, wasn’t on Mr Arsenal’s side when Bobby Robson was selecting his Italia ’90 squad.
And the formation wouldn’t have been to the Gunners legend’s strengths – playing in a back three, when he was used to a flat back four in North London.
Adams’ spot went to Mark Wright, a more cultured sweeper who could bring the ball out of defence better than his counterpart.
At Euro ’92, Martin Keown and Des Walker were the preferred two. However, Adams was restored to the first team before Euro ’96, where he had an outstanding tournament.

    JERMAIN DEFOE
In 2014, it was a close call in the striking positions for a partner for Wayne Rooney.
In fairness to Roy Hodgson, Defoe didn’t do himself any favours by moving to the MLS to play for Toronto months before the squad for the World Cup that year was decided.
Rickie Lambert, Danny Welbeck and Daniel Sturridge were picked instead, leaving Defoe devastated.
“I don’t think I’ll ever be at peace [with the decision],” the striker said at the time.
Jermain Defoe was omitted from the 2014 World Cup squad by Roy Hodgson in favour of Rickie LambertCredit: Reuters
    LAURIE CUNNINGHAM
Good enough for Real Madrid, but not for England.
The brilliant winger, whose life was tragically cut short at 33 in a car crash, joined Los Blancos after starring at West Brom for £950,000 in 1979. In doing so, he became the first British footballer to move to the LaLiga giants.

However, Ron Greenwood completely snubbed him from his Euro 1980 squad.
The following season, Cunningham made the squad for the qualifiers, after bitter negotiations with Real Madrid.
But after appearing as a sub in a 2-1 defeat to Romania, he would never wear an England jersey again.

The rise of Celtic manager target Eddie Howe, who credits his mum as his biggest inspiration and once signed his brother

FORMER Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe is the hot favourite to take the vacant Celtic manager’s post. The Scottish club, who have also been linked with former Manchester United legend Roy Keane, have held secret talks with the English boss, after he met kingmaker Dermot Desmond.

The 43-year-old tactician performed miracles on the South Coast with the Cherries, taking them from near-League Two oblivion to the Premier League in two spells with the club on a limited budget.
The modest manager credits his mum Anne for being his biggest inspiration as she supported him through his dream of making it in the professional game.
She even played in goal while her two sons fired shots at her and practiced in the park.
Anne passed away in March, 2012 following a short illness, which Eddie admitted made him take stock of his life and return to Dean Court after a short stint at Burnley.
The calm and assured gaffer is very loyal to his family, having once signed his now-retired half-brother Steve for Bournemouth in 2010.
He also had to conquer the bitter disappointment of his playing days being cut short by a serious knee injury when he was just 29-years-old.
However, that didn’t stop the grounded Amersham-born coach from rising to the top, sometimes against all the odds, to be touted as a future England coach.
    PLAYING CAREER
Eddie began his footballing career with Bournemouth, making his debut for the south coast side at the age of just 18.
Three years later and he was surprisingly called up into the England set-up for the Toulon Tournament alongside the likes of Frank Lampard, Jamie Carragher and Emile Heskey.

As a promising player, Eddie Howe was picked to play for England’s under-21sCredit: PA:Press Association
What was most surprising about his selection was he was the only League One player selected in the squad.
In 2002 Harry Redknapp signed the ball-playing centre-half for £400k and he seemed destined for the big stage.
But in only his second game for the club against Nottingham Forest, Eddie suffered an injury that was going to affect his life forever.
After jumping to head a ball clear, he heard a click in his left knee. It turned out that he dislocated his knee cap and chipped a bone under the knee.
It meant that the joint was never the same.
He had two two operations, but doctors failed to discover he had a micro-fracture and he still felt pain when trying to run.
Howe visited knee-specialist Dr. Richard Steadman, the man who rebuilt the knees of Alan Shearer and Ronaldo, who told him he would be able to play again but not at the same level.
Howe told the Telegraph: “At the end, I was a shadow of the player I had been.
“I was very keen to finish while people remembered me for the player I was rather than the player I had become.

Eddie Howe knew he would never be the same player again after his knee injuryCredit: PA:Empics Sport
“It was really tough, because the biggest challenge I found when I came back was that I wasn’t as effective.
“I had lost a lot of my attributes that made me the player I was: my pace, my turning ability, my jump.
“I wasn’t very big for a centre-half so I had to jump well and that was one of my strengths.
“When I came back I was jumping about two feet lower. I struggled with my identity and I lost what I was.
“Everyone forgets very quickly what you were and judges you on what you are – and I wasn’t very good. I found that period of my career very, very difficult.”
He went to Swindon on loan in 2004, but didn’t get a game. Then a successful loan spell at Bournemouth the same year gave him renewed hope.
In what became known as the “Eddieshare” scheme, Bournemouth’s fans pulled together to raise money to pay the £21,000 transfer fee needed to sign him.
Eddie repaid their faith by playing for a further three seasons, before he decided it was time to call it a day at 29 – no longer able to play through the pain barrier.

    CATCHING THE COACHING BUG
During this time Eddie was cutting his teeth coaching the reserve squad, but in September 2008 he was let go when first team manager Kevin Bond lost his job.
Weeks later, Eddie was back at the club he loved and working with the youth set-up thanks to Jimmy Quinn, who reintroduced the aspiring manager to the fold when he was appointed boss.
Then, Quinn was fired from the top job in December and Howe became caretaker manager during the interim.
Despite losing his first two games, Howe was hired permanently in early 2009 and became an overnight success.
The club managed to overturn a 17-point deficit and survived relegation from League Two.
The following season Howe inspired his charges to promotion to League One, guiding them to eight wins from their first nine games.
It was no surprise that mother Anne was there on the terraces, cheering Eddie and his team on.
After all, she divided her time between Dean Court and Scotland, where Eddie’s half-brother Steve made his name at Dundee, Aberdeen, Falkirk and Partick Thistle.

    BOUGHT HIS HALF-BRO
It did become easier for her though when Howe bought his brother to Bournemouth on a free transfer in 2010.
In 2011, Eddie’s future was subject speculation with plenty of clubs coveting the promising coach.
He joined Burnley, but his world was rocked a year later when his beloved mum Anne passed away.
Howe was living over 250 miles away in Manchester at the time, and he couldn’t carry on at the Clarets.
He returned back to Bournemouth in 2012. Three years later he got them promoted to the Premier League.
He told Bournemouth’s Daily Echo:  “My mum’s death certainly changed my perspective on a lot of things – on life, my career and everything.
“When something like that happens, it makes you re-evaluate and realise what’s really important.
“It was incredibly difficult to deal with and still is. When you lose someone you love so suddenly, it is very hard to take.

“But when you can’t grieve properly because you are so far away and detached, it is even harder to deal with.
“That is why coming back to this area and to this football club was a real comfort to me.
“It certainly had a big impact in my personal life and made me a lot happier off the pitch. I was closer to people who had been affected and could also help them.
“There were two totally different sides to coming back – the football part and the family side. They are totally different and there were more reasons to me coming back than I could ever talk about publicly.”

    DEDICATES IT ALL TO MUM
Eddie realises that he is where he is today because of how he was brought up by his mum, who he’s incredibly thankful for.
He told The Telegraph: “I do think the way I was brought up by my mum and the foundations she set me played a big part.
“Most people will say that your parents and your childhood experiences are so important.
“I certainly believe that to be the case for me. I was given some very good advice. I was brought up in a loving family and it has made me very focused on my work.

“Her passing away has fired me to try to achieve more in memory of her.
“She lived for her kids, really … growing up in a house full of boys with football always around.
“Steve and I were football mad and certainly inspired each other to play.
“It’s usually the dads who are out in the park kicking ball around until late but it was really me with my brothers.
“It was very much us with our mum, walking the dog or watching or sometimes acting as a goalkeeper!

“She would support us in whatever we wanted to do and sometimes that was making the numbers up.
“She is a big inspiration in my life because I want to carry on the good start she gave me. I want to make sure I don’t put that to waste.”
It’s fair to say that Eddie has done far from that, which is why Celtic could do far wrong but appoint this Mr Nice Guy.
