      F1 first with Miami Grand Prix to have gondola going through track and fake marina as super-yachts head to Florida

      FORMULA ONE is set for its biggest race weekend in centuries as it hosts the inaugural Miami GP this week.
      It is a huge event – not so much from a sporting perspective – but from a commercial one, as the sport’s owners, Liberty Media, the teams and several sponsors all look to cash in on F1’s booming popularity in the United States.

      If you were feeling cynical, you could label the Miami GP more of an F1 trade show than an F1 race.
      If you were feeling unkind, you could call it all a bit fake.
      For instance, there is a gondola that goes across the track, but not to a destination and a fake marina – two F1 firsts.
      The second part – the marina – is pretty laughable actually in that a handful of super-yachts have been craned into place only for what looks like sparkly blue tinfoil placed around their hulls to make it look like water.

      But that toe-curling fakery won’t detract the American audiences, who have grown up with people who buy cheese that comes out of a spray can!
      It would be missing the point to say this race is for the purists, or even dare I say it, for fans of racing, but rather for fans of entertainment.
      Liberty Media have always wanted to create a calendar that takes in 23 – possibly 24 next year – ‘super bowls’ across the world.
      And as anyone knows, the super bowl is not really for those fans inside the stadium, it is those who are watching on the sofa at home on TV – and there are millions of them.

      As a result, this race has a completely different business model from another on the calendar.
      The organisers pay no host fees to F1, unlike every other race apart from Monaco. Instead, F1 will look to supplement that lack of fee with future lucrative sponsorships and TV rights deals by showcasing F1 to an American audience.
      Just look at the special heavily-branded grandstands for VIP guests of McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes while Red Bull have their own site spreading around a whole corner.
      Then there are key spots too for big-spending F1 sponsors MSC Cruises while the Miami International Autodrome also has its own giant hospitality area for guests.
      And finally the Crypto.com Terrace, home for the weekend to the race sponsors and their guests.
      There is no doubt it will look great on TV and come Sunday, I expect everyone at F1 and at the Miami GP to be partaking in some serious back-slapping.
      Oh, and if you are still struggling to get over the manufactured, fake feeling of it all – just wait until we get to Las Vegas next year!

      MY paddock sources tell me that FIA President Mohammed ben Sulayem still wants to punish F1 drivers who flout the non-jewellery rule.
      It was evident in a recent video call with team chiefs. Will he dare crack the whip this weekend in Miami? We will have to wait and see….

      AS if the start to this year’s MotoGP season has not been exciting enough, Francesco Bagnaia has now joined the title race.
      The Italian, who finished runner up last season, had struggled in the opening five rounds.
      But he blasted back into the reckoning after converting pole position – a new Jerez track record – into victory to become the fifth different winner in the opening six races.
      After his win in the Spanish GP, he said: “Finally, I think I’m back to my best shape like I was last year and I would like to continue like this from now on.
      “We can’t lose any more points because after six races I’m already 33 points behind. I want to start recovering a bit.”

      FORMULA E unveiled plans for their new car for next season last week, dubbed the ‘Gen 3’.
      It will be the quickest electric race car in the world and signals a huge step in development.
      The cars will reach a top speed of 200mph and have a combined power output of 600kW.
      Now, that might not mean much to you but if I explain this year’s ‘Gen 2′ cars have 250kW of power – and are 60kgs heavier – then you can understand why the drivers in the championship are excited to race them.

      THE W SERIES kick off their championship this weekend in Miami having signed a TV deal with Sky Sports F1, who will broadcast all their races.

      The FA? It is a shocking commentary on the effectiveness of the governing body that the report all but ignores them.
      The Government now plans swift implementation but much of it should be welcomed like a giant hole in Wembley’s pitch. It is messing with an industry which works better than most and it’s hard to see what football has in common with banks or other financial institutions who also have regulators.
      There is, in my view,  only one way a regulator would prevent bankruptcy at badly-run or impoverished clubs.

      But that is also true of many businesses for which regulators would be poison.
      Football, though, is glamorous as well as successful, with lots of TV and fame thrown in.

      Now, we have to assume there will be a cost to implementing the ten key points.
      Control and bureaucracy do not come cheap, so much so that the whole thing could be in the HS2 wasted money league.
      But we have to remember  the Premier League is the envy of world sport, so why break it because Bury went bust?
      It’s staggering that there are 92 full-time professional clubs in England and that only Bury have gone out of business.
      More would have done if the Prem hadn’t handed out heaps of money during Covid.

      And for those that think the Prem should do more, we are already giving away £1.6billion to other leagues, grassroots  and charity over the next three seasons.
      How much more giving can we do without damaging the top flight itself?
      The logic is flawed — why should Norwich, for example, give more cash to Stoke, whose owners are worth £7bn?
      And one of the big problems with the proposed directors’ and owners’ test is that those you may want to keep out are already here.
      How do you root them out? More work for the regulator, I presume? More

      Positivity is not all it takes to beat the drop but to have a manager who is upbeat and inspiring is a massive contributing factor.
      As a captain you can shout all you want to rev everyone up or to keep them from downing tools but, if the manager isn’t showing that belief, you have no chance.
      It is very easy for things to boil over in a dressing room. It is high octane. Every little thing is scrutinised, especially when you are in a negative position.

      But as soon as the results hit the fan, everyone goes for you. “Why is he not doing that?” It is high pressure.
      And if it does boil over, like I have seen many times in dressing rooms before games or at half-time, you have to nip it in the bud quickly as a captain.
      Yet it only starts to get toxic and nasty when the writing is on the wall, a bit like if Norwich lose this weekend.
      That will be a nasty dressing room, I would imagine. The  selfishness takes over. When you get to that stage, players look after themselves and that’s when you see their true colours.

      Everyone will care about getting relegated, don’t get me wrong, but people care in different ways.
      No one wants that blemish on their CV, but you get some bad eggs and they get nastier because they realise they are going down or they have already sorted out a move away.
      It is a tough one.
      For Everton right now, and I don’t like the cliche of taking each game as it comes, but I have been in that situation and that’s what you do — no matter how hard you try not to.

      And Sam Allardyce will never be short of offers — having turned down the chance to relegate Everton at Burnley.
      With six games to go, Everton could still scrape their way to survival — and the fact they held out for 62 minutes at Anfield suggests a certain grit.
      But in the very real scenario that they fall through the trapdoor, then fans of Newcastle, Leeds and West Ham should pipe down and allow Everton their moment of perverse glory.
      Theirs would be the biggest car crash the world’s biggest league has ever known.
      And it really doesn’t get much bigger than that.

      Tan Hag has developed him with the ball and without to the extent that Antony is pushing hard for a place in the Brazil side – and might even be one of the coach’s transfer targets in his new job.
      Assuming that ten Hag is open to the idea of bringing over more players from South America, who might he -and United – be looking at? 
      This is a brief look at a few players who could be ten Hag targets.
      Central midfield is an area that the club are believed to be keen to strengthen.
      Fred might be much maligned, but the team always seem to operate better when he is present.

      Had it not been for his club’s appearance in February’s Club World Cup, Danilo might have joined Arsenal in the last transfer window. There could now be an opportunity for United.
      If not, then Joao Gomes of Flamengo is a possible alternative. Also 21, Joao Gomes is right footed, and not as creative as Danilo.
      But under former QPR, Swansea and Leicester boss Paulo Sousa, he is coming on quickly, taking on responsibility as a midfield ball winner with excellent lung power.

      He needs to calm down a little, but his presence on the field is considerable.
      From the same generation comes an interesting midfielder from Argentina, Enzo Fernandez of River Plate.
      He stands out for his range of passing.
      As a teenager he was loaned out to the interesting Defensa y Justicia club, and bossed the midfield for them when they won the equivalent of the Europa League, the Copa Sudamericana, in 2020.
      Recalled by River, he has made himself so important to the team that he has already been called up to Argentina’s senior squad.
      He is a little restricted to the right foot, a possible problem in the more compact midfields of Europe, but he is useful in all phases of play – winning the ball, opening up the pitch with his passing, and finishing from the edge of the area.
      And yet another 21 year old midfielder has been making a big impression over the last few weeks – Franco Zapiola of Estudiantes in Argentina.

      He is being handled gently, often brought off the bench. But there is something special in his left foot.
      A move at this stage might be premature, but he is certainly one to watch.
      And with the team in need of freshening up its strikers, it may well be worth ten Hag keeping his eye on Marcos Leonardo of Santos.
      The Brazilian, who turns 19 next week, has been thrown in the deep end in a club with a wonderful recent record of youth development.
      Financial problems have meant that his first team chances have come early.

      Everybody knows that while Fury is a fascinating talker, he often seems to change his mind twice in the space of a single sentence.
