Why has Ian Wright quit Match of the Day?
In December 2023, Ian Wright announced that he will be leaving his Match of the Day role.
A statement shared on social media by the Arsenal legend read: ”After my debut show whilst still a player in 1997 and many more memorable years, I’ll be stepping back from BBC MOTD at the end of this season.
”I feel very privileged to have had such an incredible run on the most iconic football show in the world.
”Anyone that knows my story knows how much the show has meant to me since I was young boy. MOTD is my Holy Grail.

”On my first ever show, I told Des Lynam, ‘This is my Graceland’. It will always be my Graceland and I will always be watching.”
Wright added: ”I’m stepping back having made great friends and many great memories.
”This decision has been coming for a while, maybe my birthday earlier this year fast tracked it a little, but ultimately it’s time to do a few more different things with my Saturdays.
”I’m really looking forward to my last months on the show and covering what will hopefully be an amazing Premier League title race.”

Following the announcement, head of BBC Sport content Philip Bernie said: ”Ian has been a wonderful star player on MOTD since his first appearance over 20 years ago.
”His insight, wit and warmth have richly entertained and informed all those watching him.
”We will miss his unique style and presence when he goes at the end of this season, but we will be sure to give him the send-off he deserves.”
How long did Ian Wright work on Match of the Day for?
As mentioned above, Ian Wright first appeared on the hit sports show back in 1997 – while he was still playing.
However, it wasn’t until years later that the former footballer became a regular pundit.
Wright hung up his boots and retired from playing in 2000, before becoming a familiar fixture on Match of the Day in 2002.
His first stint lasted until 2008, before Wright once again returned for a second spell on the highlights show in 2015.
Who else presents Match of the Day?
Dubbed ”the world’s most famous football show”, Match of the Day brings viewers big names and big games from the Premier League.
Prior to announcing his exit, Ian Wright became a regular on the programme alongside host Gary Lineker and fellow pundit Alan Shearer.
Reacting to the news, an emotional Lineker said: “It has been an absolute pleasure and privilege to work alongside you, Ian. One of my favourite people on the planet. Farewell my friend.”

And Shearer added: “See you in 3 hours. I’ll give you a big hug!!!”

He was however mistaken for Olly MursCredit: Splash
Sheeran, 32, was in the stands as cameras panned to him singing the Beetle’s track Hey Jude before the match.
Football commentator Nigel Adderley wanted to add some context for viewers but might need to sharpen up on his pop music knowledge.
The commentator accidentally mistook Sheeran for his pop rival Olly Murs.
He said: “And the singer, Olly Murs, a passionate Ipswich Town fan is here to watch his team here today.”

Fans spotted the gaffe and took to social media.
One fan posted: “Commentator calling Ed Sheeran Olly Murs had me questioning my eyes.”
A second commented: “There’s no way the commentator called Ed Sheeran Olly Murs.”

Unstoppable women racing towards equality.. I wonder what Joey Barton’s wife thinks of his rubbish Alex Scott comments

TAMMY WYNETTE sang: “Sometimes it’s hard to be a woman.”She was wrong… it’s hard all the bloody time!
Joey Barton claimed that women ‘shouldn’t be talking with any kind of authority’ about men’s football last weekCredit: Alamy
I don’t suppose that most of the people reading this column would understand, worry or even care what it is like to be a woman in a traditionally all-male industry like football.
But I ask them to take a pause and consider it because this has been a mixed week for women in football.
First, pleasure at a record 59,042 Women’s Super League crowd at the Emirates Stadium.
Followed by the grim news that 152 players out of 697 monitored at the Women’s World Cup received discriminatory, abusive, or threatening messages on social media.
    Read More on Football
Players at the women’s finals in Australia and New Zealand were found to be 29 per cent more likely to be targeted for online abuse than players at the 2022 men’s World Cup.
One was even subjected to open misogyny when Luis Rubiales, the former head of the Spanish FA, bear-hugged World Cup winner Jenni Hermoso before kissing her firmly on the lips.
Then this week Joey Barton’s had his say, claiming women pundits “shouldn’t be talking with any kind of authority” on the men’s game before comparing their input as the equivalent of “me talking about knitting or netball”.
Joey’s entitled to his opinion, of course, but I suspect his comments just encouraged more vile social media abuse aimed at women who just want to be left alone to get on with their job.

I wonder what Joey’s wife and daughter make of his anger on a fresh target, singling out Alex Scott because, I suspect, the England international is making much more of a splash than Barton ever will.
Scott has no chip on her shoulder. Barton has a whole plank on his.
She had a career of 140 appearances and 12 goals for England as a right-back, he played one international for, ahem, 11 minutes.
This, he thinks, entitles him to judge that Scott should shut up about the men’s game.
She hasn’t experienced it and neither she nor any other woman should commentate on it or analyse it. Anyway, she wasn’t “a great player”. What rubbish.
She has earned her right to do the job she does, and she does it very well.
Why should she be subjected to abuse and singling out just because she is a woman? Barton’s attitude is reminiscent of the one that women should stay at home, clean the house, look after the kids and not dabble in men’s business.
There are many that still think like that. Sadly, the view that only men should cover men’s football is common.
Alex Scott has responded to Barton’s commentsCredit: Reuters
But you’ll have to get used to it because, chaps, our impetus towards the top in almost every sphere is unstoppable.
We are to have our first female ref in the Premier League.
Rebecca Welch will take charge of the game between Fulham and Burnley on December 23. Most will presume this is a token gesture, but it is not.
She is yet another woman who has earned the right having spent years working her way up from the very bottom of the referee programme.
What difference does it make it you are male or female if you can do the job?
    Read more on The Sun
The best retort to male supremacists might well come very soon.
Should goalkeeper Mary Earps win the Sports Personality of the Year award — the second consecutive female winner after Beth Mead — it will be a further salute to equality. Something we should all strive for.

Cindy crouched in the giant designer-label carrier bag for one photo and held it up in front of her for another as she grinned mischievously.
It’s a dramatic reduction in clothing from a recent snap of the 25-year-old in a winter coat in the style of wicked Disney character Cruella De Vil.
And fans found more than 101 reasons to praise her new minimalist look after her Xmas shopping outing.
One observer joked: “This is my bag. I lost it. Whoever finds it should contact me through this account. It’s the most precious thing I own.”

    Who has the YouTuber fought?
Like many internet sensations, KSI has used his social media fame as an opportunity to enter the world of boxing.
As of December 2023, the YouTuber-turned boxer boasts a boxing record of 4-1-1.
    Logan Paul
Having previously beaten fellow YouTuber Joe Weller in his first amateur boxing fight, KSI turned his attention to Logan Paul as his next opponent.
The highly-anticipated fight ended in a draw, with the rematch scheduled as a professional fight – the first of both their careers.

KSI once again emerged victorious with a result of a split decision, with two judges scoring the contest in favour of the British boxer.
    Swarmz and Luis Pineda
In 2022, KSI returned to the ring once more to face rapper Swarmz.
Later that evening, the YouTuber fought for a second time against Mexican boxer Luis Pineda.
Following the double fight night, KSI defeated Swarmz via a second round KO – and that wasn’t his only victory.

KSI also defeated Pineda via a third round KO.
    FaZe Temperrr
The next boxing bout saw KSI take to the ring against Brazilian YouTuber FaZe Temperrr.
However, he was originally scheduled to face Conor McGregor’s training partner Dillon Danis.
This bout turned out to be KSI’s quickest victory to date – with the contest stopping in the first round following a brutal knockout.
    Joe Fournier
Following a number of wins, KSI faced professional boxer Joe Fournier, who was also undefeated, in May 2023 at the Wembley Arena in London.
During the second round, the YouTuber-turned boxer threw a right hook that missed, causing his elbow to strike Fournier, knocking him unconscious.
KSI was awarded the KO win on the night, but after the bout concluded, Fournier appealed the decision.
Later that month, the Professional Boxing Association officially overturned the win and it was ruled as a no contest.
    Tommy Fury
The YouTuber suffered a unanimous decision defeat to the Love Island star in their grudge match.
The bout took place at Manchester Arena in Manchester, on October 14, 2023.
Internet sensation KSI fumed with the result of the contest, so much so that he launched an appeal to the Professional Boxing Association.
But the PBA have insisted there were NO grounds to overturn the result of the Misfits melee.
KSI was consumed with rage after slipping to his first defeat in the influencer boxing scene and claimed he was “robbed” of a victory.”
He said: “Obviously [Tommy Fury’s] a pro boxer.
