      Club officials blamed a hamstring injury but days later Messi played in China’s rival Japan.
      Fans in mainland China saw it as a major snub and started targeting the social media account of the Argentinian embassy in Beijing.
      They blasted Messi, 36, and hailed British rule over the Falkands using the same terms the Communist Party uses for its claim that Taiwan is part of China.

      One user of Weibo – the Chinese equivalent of X/Twitter – said: “The fact that the islands belong to Britain is beyond doubt.

      Another – using the name for the Falklands in Spanish – referred to the 1982 war and said: “The Malvinas Islands are part of the UK.
      “They were before, they are now, and of course, they will always be in the future.

      The Falklands are a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic.
      The UK Government says it has the right to the land based on its long-term administration of the Falklands and on the principle of self-determination for the islanders, who are almost all of British descent.
      In a referendum on the islands in 2013 just three residents out of 1,517 were against remaining British.
      However, Argentina says it has a right to the islands because it inherited them from the Spanish Empire.
      It has also based its claim on the islands’ proximity to the South American mainland.
      In 1982, Argentina’s military junta landed its forces on the Falklands to stake a territorial claim.
      Some 255 British service personnel died in the successful defence of the islands.
      The 72-day war also left 649 Argentine soldiers dead.
      Britain has tried to improve relations with Argentina since the war, although Argentina continues to claim sovereignty over the islands. More

      A Posh statement read: “Peterborough United’s Sky Bet League One fixture with Port Vale has been postponed following a pitch inspection by match referee Adam Herczeg.
      “After persistent unpredicted heavy rain throughout the afternoon and into the evening, the Weston Homes pitch has been deemed unplayable.
      “The forecast for the evening does not show any sign of let up in terms of the rain. A new date for the fixture will be announced in due course.”
      The postponement means new Port Vale boss Darren Moore will have to wait to take charge of his first game, which will now be away at Cheltenham on February 17.

      The League One clash was not the only fixture to be called off tonight following the heavy rainfall.
      Burton’s game with Carlisle was called off after likewise being deemed unplayable due to a waterlogged pitch.
      Grimsby’s League Two clash with Colchester was similarly called off due to a waterlogged pitch.
      Two National League matches – Altrincham v Wealdstone and Solihull Moors v Kidderminster – have both called off tonight.

      Meanwhile, two more games – Taunton v Torquay and Truro v Dover – were also postponed.

      Earlier today Port Vale, who are 21st in League One, announced the appointment of Moore, 49, on a five-and-a-half-year contract.

      The video captured the chilling moment the player collapsed as he was hit by the lightning bolt during the match in Indonesia.
      The man was playing in a friendly match between 2 FLO FC Bandung and FBI Subang at Siliwangi Stadium in Bandung, West Java.
      In the terrifying clip, other players can be seen rushing to carry the victim off the field after he fell to the ground.
      According to local media PRFM news, the man was still breathing as he was taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

      His jersey was reportedly torn from the lightning strike.
      Witnesses reported that the weather was cloudy and the rain had started to fall.
      The clip of the incident has since gone viral online, with people flooding to the comments to send their condolences.

      Chilling video footage recorded moments after the strike shows the pitch littered with stricken players and officials desperately racing to get them to safety and medical treatment.
