Memphis Grizzlies Guard Ja Morant Suspended 8 Games for Gun Video

The N.B.A. said it was “irresponsible, reckless and potentially very dangerous” for Morant to livestream video of himself holding a gun in a nightclub near Denver. The N.B.A. suspended Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant for eight games without pay for conduct detrimental to the league after he appeared in an Instagram live video early on the morning of March 4 “holding a firearm in an intoxicated state” while visiting a nightclub near Denver, according to a league statement.Morant, 23, has not played since March 3, when the Grizzlies lost to the Denver Nuggets, and the five games he has missed will count toward the suspension. He will be eligible to play again in the Grizzlies’ game on Monday against the Dallas Mavericks.“Ja’s conduct was irresponsible, reckless and potentially very dangerous,” N.B.A. Commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement. “It also has serious consequences given his enormous following and influence, particularly among young fans who look up to him. He has expressed sincere contrition and remorse for his behavior.”Silver and Morant met at the N.B.A.’s office in New York on Wednesday. According to the league’s statement, the league’s head of basketball operations, Joe Dumars, who oversees player punishment, and Tamika Tremaglio, the executive director of the N.B.A. players’ union, also attended the meeting. The league said that it had investigated the video and “did not conclude” that Morant owned the gun or that he brought it to the club. The N.B.A. also said in its statement that it did not determine that Morant had traveled with the gun or taken it to an N.B.A. facility. The league’s collective bargaining agreement prohibits players from having firearms and deadly weapons at N.B.A. facilities or when traveling on league business. Players who violate that policy can be suspended indefinitely by the commissioner and fined up to $50,000.Morant had been away from the Grizzlies since March 4, though the Grizzlies did not say whether he had been suspended. By that afternoon, his Twitter and Instagram accounts had been deactivated. That same day, the agency that represents Morant, Tandem, released a statement from Morant in which he said he took “full responsibility for my actions last night.”“I’m sorry to my family, teammates, coaches, fans, partners, the city of Memphis and the entire Grizzlies organization for letting you down,” Morant said. “I’m going to take some time away to get help and work on learning better methods of dealing with stress and my overall well-being.”The incident at the nightclub happened three days after The Washington Post reported that Morant had been involved in two incidents last summer in which police were called. In one, Morant was accused of threatening a mall security guard. In the other, he was accused of punching a teenage boy during a pickup game at his home. Morant said he was acting in self-defense.Morant is one of the league’s brightest stars, known for his acrobatic dunks and brash trash talk. He has led the Grizzlies to playoff berths in the past two seasons after a three-year drought for the franchise. He won the league’s Rookie of the Year Award in 2020 and is a two-time All-Star.This season, Morant has averaged 27.1 points, 8.2 assists and 6.0 rebounds per game, leading the Grizzlies to the second-best record in the Western Conference. In his absence, Memphis has held on to the No. 2 seed in the West, having gone 3-2 without Morant. More

Gary Lineker to Return to BBC Soccer Show ‘Match of the Day’

The move calms a crisis at the publicly funded broadcaster after Gary Lineker, a former soccer star, was removed from a flagship show because of a tweet about immigration policy. The BBC announced on Monday that it had reached an agreement with Gary Lineker, a star sports personality, that will allow him to return to hosting its flagship soccer program, “Match of the Day.”The move defuses a crisis that began with a politically charged post that Mr. Lineker posted on Twitter last week about the British government’s immigration policy and escalated into a staff mutiny that threatened the BBC’s reputation and stability.“Gary is a valued part of the BBC and I know how much the BBC means to Gary, and I look forward to him presenting our coverage this coming weekend,” Tim Davie, the broadcaster’s director general, said in a statement.Mr. Davie said the BBC would launch an independent review into its social media guidelines. In a Twitter post, Mr. Lineker said, “After a surreal few days, I’m delighted that we have navigated a way through this.” He also thanked his colleagues at the network who had supported him.Mr. Lineker’s standoff with the BBC had set off a noisy national debate about free expression, government influence and the role of a revered, if beleaguered, public broadcaster in an era of polarized politics and freewheeling social media. It came after a walkout by Mr. Lineker’s soccer colleagues forced the BBC to radically curtail its coverage of a national obsession, reducing the chatty flagship show he usually anchors, “Match of the Day,” to 20 commentary-free minutes on Saturday. The BBC struggled over the weekend to work out a compromise with Mr. Lineker that would put him back on the air, after days of controversy about his criticism of a government plan to crack down on asylum seekers. But the fallout from the dispute is likely to be wide and long-lasting, casting doubt over the corporation’s management, which has made political impartiality a priority but has faced persistent questions about its own close ties to the Conservative government.“All this has put the BBC’s independence at risk, and its reputation at risk,” said Claire Enders, a London-based media researcher and the founder of Enders Analysis. “That’s unfortunate because this is, at heart, a dispute over whether the BBC can impose its social media guidelines on a contractor.”Mr. Lineker, 62, is no ordinary contractor, of course. He is perhaps the BBC’s biggest name, a beloved sports figure who made a smooth transition from the playing field to the broadcasting booth, where he has been a weekly fixture since 1999, analyzing games and shooting the breeze with other retired sports stars. He is the BBC’s highest-paid on-air personality, earning 1.35 million pounds, about $1.6 million, in 2022.But Mr. Lineker, who grew up in a working-class family in Leicester, has never kept his views on social issues a secret. When the government announced strict new immigration plans to cut down on asylum seekers, he posted on Twitter, “This is just an immeasurably cruel policy directed at the most vulnerable people in language that is not dissimilar to that used by Germany in the 30s, and I’m out of order?”The British home secretary, Suella Braverman, who is spearheading the policy to stop migrants from crossing the English Channel in small boats, said that Mr. Lineker’s comments diminished the atrocities of the Holocaust. Other Conservative lawmakers said that he had misused his BBC platform — not for the first time — to voice a political opinion.“We need to make sure we maintain that trust in the independence and impartiality of the BBC,” the chancellor of the Exchequer, Jeremy Hunt, said on Sunday to a BBC journalist, Laura Kuenssberg. The BBC is not the only media organization to hit turbulence over questions about political expression and social media. Tensions have flared at British newspapers, as well as at The Washington Post and The New York Times, over the Twitter posts of journalists, sometimes critical of their own employers.“This is a period of social change, where public attitudes toward the media and social media are rapidly evolving,” said Mark Thompson, a former director general of the BBC who was later the chief executive of The New York Times Company. “Editorial teams around the world are racing to catch up.”What makes Mr. Lineker’s case especially complicated is both his job status — he is a contractor, not a full-time employee, who works for BBC Sports as opposed to BBC News — and the broadcaster’s enforcement of its social media guidelines, which critics say is haphazard at best and hypocritical at worst.Alan Sugar, a British businessman who hosts the BBC’s version of the American reality TV show “The Apprentice,” has tweeted vociferously against a union leader who has pursued a confrontation with the government, as well as against a former leader of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, whom Mr. Lineker has also criticized.Mr. Lineker got into no apparent trouble with his bosses about that, or for speaking out on the air about human rights abuses in Qatar during his coverage of the World Cup soccer tournament there last year.Mr. Davie, a former marketing executive who also had links to the Conservative Party, has come under fire for his handling of the dispute with Mr. Lineker. In an interview with the BBC over the weekend, he apologized for the spiraling crisis, which forced the broadcaster to all but scrap two days of sports programming.“This has been a tough time for the BBC,” Mr. Davie said. “Success for me is getting Gary back on air and together we are giving to the audiences that world-class sports coverage which, as I say, I’m sorry we haven’t been able to deliver today.”Mr. Davie, who was appointed during the Johnson government, has made upholding the BBC’s political impartiality one of his major goals as director general. But he denied that the broadcaster was bowing to pressure from the government or Conservative politicians, and said he had no plans to resign. More

Ja Morant Steps Away From Grizzlies as NBA Investigates Apparent Gun Video

The Grizzlies said Morant would be away for at least two games but did not say why. Several people posted video clips on social media that appeared to show Morant holding a gun.The Memphis Grizzlies said Saturday that their star guard Ja Morant would be away from the team for at least two games, just hours after the N.B.A. said it would investigate a social media post that appeared to show Morant holding a gun.The Grizzlies did not immediately respond to questions about the social media post, the reason for Morant’s absence and whether he had been suspended. Several people posted video clips on social media on Saturday that appeared to show Morant in a live video on his Instagram account holding a gun and smiling in a nightclub. No live videos matching the clips circulating on social media were on Morant’s verified Instagram account mid-Saturday morning. By the afternoon, Morant’s Instagram and Twitter accounts had been deactivated. In a statement, Morant, 23, said he took “full responsibility for my actions last night,” without being specific about what he was referring to, and he apologized for letting people down.“I’m going to take some time away to get help and work on learning better methods of dealing with stress and my overall well-being,” Morant said in the statement, which was posted on Twitter by Tandem, the agency that represents him.On Friday night, the Grizzlies lost a road game against the Denver Nuggets. According to the N.B.A.’s collective bargaining agreement, players are barred from having firearms at team facilities or when traveling on league business.Morant is already one of the best guards in the N.B.A. in his fourth season. He has made the All-Star team the last two seasons and has helped revitalize the Grizzlies since he won the Rookie of the Year Award in 2020. He recently debuted his first signature shoe with Nike and his jersey is one of the top-sellers in the N.B.A. On Wednesday, the sports drink Powerade announced a partnership with him.But that same day, The Washington Post reported that Morant had been involved in two incidents over the summer that were reported to the police. The Post said it had obtained a sealed police report in which Morant was accused of punching a teenage boy during a pickup game but said it was in self-defense. In the other incident, Morant was accused of threatening a mall security guard. Neither case resulted in criminal charges, though the teen’s mother has filed a lawsuit.Morant will at least miss the Grizzlies’ road games against the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday and the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday. Memphis is the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference, at 38-24. More

The Argentine, 35, claimed the honour following his World Cup triumph in Qatar.
He beat fellow nominees Benzema and Kylian Mbappe to the award – and matched Cristiano Ronaldo’s record of two wins.
And Real Madrid’s talisman does not appear to have taken the decision well.
Benzema, 35, posted a screenshot from a fan account which listed all his achievements from August 2021 to December 2022 – the time period in consideration for the awards.

By contrast, the Real striker’s team-mate David Alaba voted for Messi – although he later clarified his vote was collaboratively decided by the Austrian national team.
Benzema won the Ballon d’Or last year after bagging 44 goals in 46 games to help Los Blancos win LaLiga and the Champions League.

‘I’m a proper footballer’ – Alisha Lehmann says women’s football ‘is always second class’ but social media can help

WSL star Alisha Lehmann believes social media can help increase the viewership of women’s football. The Aston Villa winger has built up her own support on social media as she has more followers than some of sports biggest stars.

She does not always post football content on InstagramCredit: https://www.instagram.com/alishalehmann7/?hl=en
Lehmann has 12 million followers on Instagram which is more than tennis icon Roger Federer, boxers Tommy Fury and Jake Paul as well as Man City star Jack Grealish and F1 champion Max Verstappen.
While she gets a lot of interest for her glamorous snaps rather than her footballing skills, Lehmann has insisted that he is not distracted by it.
She told talkSPORT: “To be honest, I don’t really think about it.
“It’s not something where I wake up every day and think, oh my God, I have so many followers.

“It’s more that it’s really nice, the support and everything and it’s also a big opportunity.
“I would like to show the world that women can actually do it in football and you don’t need to just to be normal.

“You can also be a bit crazy, just be you, and use your personality to show the world who you are.”
While, it has allowed the 24-year-old to grow her own brand, she does find it frustrating that she can be criticised for calling herself a footballer, without always posting sports content.

She added: “Some people just see Instagram and social media and don’t even know I actually play football.
“When I don’t post a football picture for a week, people say, ‘oh she doesn’t even play’.
“I think sometimes it’s a bit hard because obviously, I play like I train every day, like everyone else, like I play every weekend and sometimes it’s hard because they make a picture of you.
“I’m a proper footballer. I work hard every day. I want to be the best version of myself in football and that’s my first priority in life.”
The Swiss international also explained that many of the women that play back in Switzerland have to have second jobs to make enough money.
But she believes that women’s football is growing and that social media can help push it forward.
Lehmann insisted: “England probably is the picture everyone should look at because I don’t think in other countries it increased that much.
“In Switzerland, for example, everyone’s still working, 90 per cent probably still work.
“I don’t think you can compare like anything between women’s and men’s football because it’s just so different how people look at us and how people look at them.
“It’s just not the same. Women’s football is always second class. I don’t think you’ll ever be first class because I think a lot of people still think that men’s football is the first priority.
“They don’t think about women’s football and I think that’s a big problem. Now social media is really helpful because people actually see, oh, we play football, we can play football.
“When they come to their first game, after they say ‘oh it’s not even that bad’ they’re surprised but people judge before they even saw the actual game.
“I don’t think this [being equal to men] will ever happen to be honest, maybe in the next 100 years but we will not be here anymore.

“I hope that in the summer when we play the World Cup it’s a big, big thing. I hope that will push women’s football more forward.
