Luton to escape FA punishment for sick chants against Liverpool blasted by Jamie Carragher as talks held with police

THE FA will not sanction Luton over the “tragedy chanting” that marred the Hatters’ 1-1 draw with Liverpool.Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher condemned the home fans who chanted “always the victims” during the game – a reference to the Hillsborough disaster.
Luton will not be sanctioned by the FA over ‘tragedy chanting’ heard against LiverpoolCredit: Rex
But while the FA and Premier League united in a pre-season drive to root out offensive chants, that did not include punishing clubs for the behaviour of their fans.
While Wembley accepts the chants are offensive and do not want them to continue, they are not deemed “discriminatory” in law – and so cannot bring FA action.
The onus is on Luton to identify and – if they see fit – ban the perpetrators, while working alongside local police to determine if a criminal act has taken place.
Such action would be welcomed by the FA but they are powerless to act by taking any disciplinary action.

Despite that, the FA showed its concern as a spokesperson said: “We are aware of the tragedy chanting during yesterday’s Premier League fixture between Luton Town and Liverpool.
“We are seeking observations from Luton Town and further detail from the Police.
“We strongly condemn chanting of this nature and will continue to work closely with our stakeholders across the game, including the clubs, leagues, fan groups and the relevant authorities to proactively address this issue.”
Carragher had called out the home fans for their sick chants, which were heard live on Sky Sports.

Appearing on commentary, he said during the game: “At the start of the season I was involved in something about tragedy chanting and supporters coming together. I have just heard something a couple of times in this game.
“Supporters have got to have rivalry but we are better than that. A lot of clubs have been guilty of that over the years but football fans are better than that.”
The Luton chants came just a week after Manchester City blasted a section of their own fans.
A small section of fans were overheard singing disgraceful chants following the death of Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton.
City responded to the incident with a damning club statement, condemning the chants from their supporters. More

Anfield legend Carragher was in the gantry co-commentating on the match for Sky Sports.
He said during the game: “At the start of the season I was involved in something about tragedy chanting and supporters coming together. I have just heard something a couple of times in this game.
“Supporters have got to have rivalry but we are better than that. A lot of clubs have been guilty of that over the years but football fans are better than that.”
In the summer, the Premier League said they would clamp down on clubs whose fans were caught taunting the opposition in such a horrific manner.

A statement read: “Premier League clubs unanimously agreed at the Annual General Meeting today to a series of new measures to address the unacceptable rise in anti-social behaviour involving football tragedy-related chanting, gesturing, graffiti, online abuse and other behaviours last season.
“The measures are the output of a cross-football working group which was set up in December to explore available options to challenge the normalisation of such distasteful behaviours and incidents.
“The issues have continued to cause significant distress to the victims’ families, survivors and affected club supporters, in addition to damaging the reputation of the clubs involved and football in England and Wales.
“The action will focus on criminal prosecution, the regulatory environment, enforcement, online abuse, education and communications.”

Paul Merson’s bold Tottenham vs Chelsea claim leaves Sky Sports panel stunned ahead of huge Premier League clash

Paul Merson left the Sky Sports panel stunned with a controversial predictionCredit: Sky Sports
The North Londoners have been flying high this season and are top of the table thanks to a ten-match unbeaten streak, which has seen them win a staggering eight times along the way.
The West Londoners, on the other hand, have been struggling significantly with only three wins out of ten league matches, of which they have lost four.
That has seen Mauricio Pochettino’s side left languishing in 11th place.
However, Merson still doesn’t believe Tottenham can beat Chelsea next week.

During his latest Sky Sports appearance, the pundit stated Ange Postecoglou’s side will “have a go” and that will suit the visitors as it will allow them to find space for the counter-attack.
Merson told the panel: “Chelsea fans would rather play them teams [who come at them].
“Teams that come to Chelsea and sit back, it’s a struggle. I go and watch myself. Ten behind the ball.
“I am more confident about going to Tottenham on Monday than playing Brentford at home. I am.

“Because I know Tottenham will have a go – I am going Monday. I would be shocked if Chelsea lose, I would be shocked.”
Merson left the panel stunned with his controversial take of the upcoming clash.

Merson explained: “This is the first time after a very, very long time, believe me, that Tottenham fans will be turning up expected to beat Chelsea.
“For the first time in a long time and they should. But it’s a different pressure now. They have to have a go.” More

Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher argue on live TV after Manchester Derby as Sky Sports forced to use new camera angle

Defeat to City raised further questions about the club’s progression under Erik ten Hag, who has, so far, failed to create any improvements in his side.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher pointed that out to Neville and cited Unai Emery and Ange Postecoglou’s successes at Aston Villa and Tottenham as evidence of that fact.
Neville accepted the point but was quick to cite the long-standing turmoil under the Glazer ownership and the prospect of Sir Jim Ratcliffe making sweeping changes once he acquires a stake in the club as reasons for the team’s shortcomings.
The Sky Sports pundit said: ” To be honest with you, I can’t disagree with you. Those managers that you’re talking about [have] come into stable environments.

“They’ve currently got over their heads a guy all over the news [who is] gonna own 25 per cent.”
Carragher interjected and said: “Oh, Gary, Gary. No, no.”
Neville angrily replied: “Why will you not listen? Why do I have to listen to you, but you won’t listen to me?”
He continued: “Basically, you imagine you’re in a business, you’re in a football club and the news is that there is a guy that’s gonna come in and basically wipe out the whole football department.

Gary Neville repeatedly blamed United’s woes on the ownership of the clubCredit: SKY SPORTS
“Can you imagine what’s going on inside that football department at this moment in time? In and around Erik ten Hag?
“It is toxic and embedded negativity. They all think they’re all going to lose their jobs. And you can say, ‘Carry on with it, they’re professional.’
“But can you imagine what’s happening? Sir Jim Ratcliffe is going to come in with Dave Brailsford, they’re going to sweep out the football department and they’re all going to get moved away.
“That’s what’s happening and I honestly believe this toxicity that exists at this club, and has done for years by the way, it just eats alive every manager that comes and every player that comes.
“Harry Maguire was going to go to Manchester City. Mason Mount was going to go to Liverpool.
“They come here and it’s a graveyard for them. Are we going to keep blaming the kids in the class or are we going to blame the head teacher?”
Carragher refused to let his fellow pundit, or the Red Devils off the hook, asking: “So we can’t analyse anything Erik ten Hag does or any performance from Manchester United?
Why do I have to listen to you, but you won’t listen to me?Gary Neville to Jamie Carragher
“Every time they get beat badly in a game, it goes back to the ownership.
“Of course, it’s not right, the supporters are not happy. But what you’re talking bout is a style of football.
“What he’s doing on the training pitch Monday to Friday has got nothing to do with Jim Ratcliffe coming in.
“When they’re building up from the back – and we see every top team in the league do it – what are Manchester United trying to do with the ball?
“They’re playing underdog football and they have done since he came in.”
Neville tried to interject, which prompted Carragher to say: “Gary, let me finish. You just spoke before.”
He continued: “They play counterattack and they play a lot of long balls. No other top team plays like that.
Jamie Carragher refused to let Erik ten Hag and his troops of the hookCredit: SKY SPORTS
“That’s nothing to do with what’s going on above him.
“What is he doing on the training pitch? The players he’s bringing in. And what’s he asking the team to do?
    “You can’t see it.”
Red Devils legend Neville acknowledged some of the blame lay at Ten Hag’s feat but refused to deviate from his initial stance.
He said: “I’m not saying he’s not culpable for the mistakes that he’s making.
“He’s got injuries to [Lisandro] Martinez who helps him play out [from the back].
“He’s got injuries to [Raphael] Varane and Varane is only just coming back. So there are issues why he can’t play out from the back.
“He’s not got Casemiro in midfield. So he’s got three players [missing] who, fundamentally, are his connection from defence [to attack].”
Carragher then said: “Casemiro is one of the worst decisions they’ve made.”
Neville continued: “What I’m saying to you is those players help him play from the back.
“I don’t like the football at all. I have no idea what the repeated patterns are that they’re trying to put in place.
“But, the bigger picture at Manchester United is we’ve seen great managers, with great reputations and great players come here and just die in front of our eyes.
