Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher reveal their end-of-season awards… and they finally agree on one for Man Utd

AS usual Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher didn’t agree on much when it came to their end of season awards.Out of eight categories, the two only came together to agree on one. Both pundits predicted Manchester United to finish in the top fourCredit: X/ @SkySportsPLAnd it was Manchester United’s disastrous season that brought them together. Both pundits agreed that the club have underachieved the most in the Premier League. This season came off the back of a positive one for the Red Devils last time out.The club won the Carabao Cup and finished third in the Prem during Erik ten Hag’s debut season.READ MORE ON FOOTBALLBut the club look to have gone backwards this season under the Dutchman’s watch – with it looking likely they will finish eighth and miss out on European football altogether. When handing out the ‘award’, Carragher said: “Man Utd finished third last season and I thought, with the signings, they brought in a better goalkeeper who could play with his feet.”They brought Mason Mount in almost to replace Eriksen and they brought a striker who they didn’t really have last season.”So I just didn’t really think they’d drop out of the top four.”Most read in FootballThe pundits could only agree on Manchester UnitedCredit: X/ @SkySportsPLCASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO WELCOME OFFERSWhen asked about his prediction for United to finish in the top four, a glum Neville said: “I think most people would have gone for United in the top four. Below SunSport gives it verdict on how they should deal with the Red Devils flops this summer.
Andre Onana – STAY: After a dodgy start at Old Trafford Onana has proven to be one of the more reliable members of the squad this season despite being peppered with shots constantly.
Altay Bayindir – GO: Reports in February suggested Bayindir was unhappy with his bit part role at Man Utd amid interest from Turkish giants Galatasaray. If profit can be made on a sale then it should be done.
Tom Heaton – STAY: Veteran goalkeeper Heaton, 38, is a reliable back-up and is on a relatively small wage at the club. So long as he is happy it makes sense to keep him.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – GO: Wan-Bissaka, 26, has never managed to make the right-back position his own. With his contract up in 2025 it makes sense to cash in now.
Diogo Dalot – STAY: Dalot, 26, has been one of Man Utd’s most consistent performers this season.
Raphael Varane – GO: If it wasn’t for his injury record there would be a strong shout to keep Varane, but costs need to be cut to allow the squad to be freshened up.
Harry Maguire – GO: Maguire has showed he has the right character to be at Man Utd but overall ability and desired profile are another matter, with Maguire too slow to play in a high line defence.
Lisandro Martinez – STAY: Martinez, 26, is second to none in terms of build up play. He needs a long-term defensive partner on the right side and to cut out the injuries which have plagued him this season.
Jonny Evans – GO: Veteran campaigner Evans could easily be on the stay list if he was only going to be a bit part player. But he has shown his advanced years at times this season.
Victor Lindelof – GO:  Lindelof, 29, has been reliable if not unremarkable in his Man Utd career. He has one year left on his contract so should be moved on if a decent transfer fee can be got for him.
Willy Kambwala – STAY: He should be given the opportunity to mature for a few years behind a senior CB pairing before stepping into the first team as a starter or being moved on.
Luke Shaw – GO: One of the Premier League’s best left-backs when fit, Shaw has been a good servant when available. But alas that has been his Achilles heel once again this season.
Tyrell Malacia – STAY: Malacia, 24, was decent enough to earn some merit in his first season at Man Utd before injury ended his season and inadvertently led to his second season being a write off.
Sofyan Amrabat – GO: Amrabat, 27, looked like a world beater at the Qatar World Cup with Morocco. But he’s had an underwhelming season in England and his loan spell will almost certainly not be made permanent.
Casemiro – GO: An alarming physical decline has seen him turn from key star to burden. If a club is willing to buy the 32-year-old – who has two more years on his contract – then United should snatch their hand off.
Christian Eriksen – GO: Eriksen proved a useful asset and Ineos should look to bring in another player with similar traits, but frankly his legs have looked gone towards the end of this season.
Kobbie Mainoo – STAY: The first of the so-called untouchables, Mainoo has been a rare glimmer of hope in the Red Devils midfield this season.
Mason Mount – STAY: Mount can be given the benefit of the doubt until summer 2025 at least after a debut season riddled with injury.
Scott McTominay – STAY: McTominay, 27, has proven himself to be a brilliant plan B off the bench this season, and that is exactly why Ineos should look to keep him.
Bruno Fernandes – STAY: Man Utd’s best player since his arrival just over four years ago, Fernandes, 29, remains second-to-none when it comes to creating chances while his tenacity boosts those around him.
Antony – GO: There’s a case to argue that Antony may be the worst pound-for-pound signing in Premier League history. Despite some memorable moments he simply isn’t Man Utd quality.
Anthony Martial – GO: Ultimately Martial needs to be let go when his deal runs out this summer after an appalling injury record of late.
Marcus Rashford – STAY: As easy as it would be to say Rashford should leave the club this summer, it is difficult to look at the market and find many available players capable of scoring 30 goals a season.
Alejandro Garnacho – STAY: Another third of the untouchables trio, Garnacho has made the right-wing his own since coming into it. He’s a raw talent but has shown he has the quality to improve.
Rasmus Hojlund – STAY: A slow burner in his first Man Utd season, the 21-year-old has often been starved of supply which has led to him being unable to get the goals his movement and unselfish play often merits.
Amad Diallo – STAY: In the fleeting moments he has been on the pitch for Man Utd this season, Diallo has looked dangerous and exciting. He should be given a chance to flourish with some proper chances in the first team across a whole season. More

‘I got it wrong’ – Neville and Carragher discover how pre-season predictions fared as they make same Man Utd howler

EXPERT punditry duo Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have taken a look back at their pre-season predictions now that the campaign is coming to a close. Both former stars reflected on what they got right and what they got horribly wrong.Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville looked back on their pre-season predictionsCredit: SKY SPORTSNeville had a howler on one prediction in particularCredit: SKY SPORTSCarragher and Neville sat down at the start of the season to predict the top six, bottom three, top goalscorer, impact signing and “one to watch” for the 2023/24 season. And some nine months later the pair have looked back to review their decisions. They can both be happy with their title winning predictions as Carragher picked Man City and Neville opted for Arsenal. With the title going down to the last day of the season between City and the Gunners, it’s safe to say their predictions were accurate on that front.READ MORE IN FOOTBALLThe top four is where things start to go downhill with both former England internationals predicting Manchester United to finish in third place. The Red Devils have endured a turbulent injury-filled campaign that has seen them lose 14 league games already.Erik ten Hag’s side are currently eighth in the league table and, with just two games to play, sit some 14 points off the top four and 25 off third placed Liverpool.Gary Neville was quick to defend his prediction by suggesting that United were expected to finish in the top four after their campaign last season. Most read in FootballBEST FREE BET SIGN UP OFFERS FOR UK BOOKMAKERSArsenal will play for the title on the final dayCredit: GettyManchester City remain title favourites but will see it go down to the final whistle on SundayCredit: PAManchester United have had a frustrating campaign this seasonCredit: GettySpeaking on Sky Sports, he said: “I think most people would have gone for United in top four [at the start of the season].”It’s been a massive under-performance and a bad season.”Watch Gary Neville’s brilliant reaction to Aston Villa equaliser against Liverpool on live TV as fans beg ‘meme that’Neville made up the remainder of his top four with Man City and Liverpool, while Carragher chose Arsenal and Liverpool alongside United.Neither were too far off with their 5th and 6th place predictions, choosing sides that have pushed for European positions this season.Carragher picked Chelsea and Newcastle, while pundit pal Neville predicted Aston Villa would make the grade this year alongside Chelsea.Bottom threeHowever, relegation is where the predictions took another bad turn, but not for Carragher. The Liverpool legend got it bang on by choosing all three of the newly promoted teams to head straight back down – Burnley and Sheffield United have already been resigned to relegation while Luton are as good as gone. However Neville made a howler for one of his relegation sides, choosing Bournemouth as one of the three to head to the Championship alongside the Blades and the Hatters. The Cherries have done anything but flirt with relegation with Andoni Iraola at the helm. The south coast club are currently 11th in the table – closer on points to the European places than they are to the drop.Neville had no excuses for his shocking prediction and held his hands up to his mistake. He said: “Yeah… no. Paul Merson makes very early Premier League prediction live on TV as he promises to get multiple tattoos

PAUL MERSON has made a bold bet while making an early prediction for next season. The 56-year-old former Arsenal attacker was working for Sky Sports to watch the Gunners beat Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford.Man Utd were beaten at home by Arsenal on Sunday in another dismal displayCredit: GettyPaul Merson made an early prediction for the Red Devils ahead of next termCredit: Sky SportsThe home side have been decimated by injuries this term, with ten players unavailable for their latest defeat. That result left them stuck in eighth place and on course for their worst-ever Premier League finish.United are now at serious risk of missing out on European football altogether having lost 19 games in all-competitions – the most since the 1978/79 season. The defeat by Arsenal was also the club’s ninth at Old Trafford this campaign, the joint-most at home in a single season in their history.READ MORE ON FOOTBALLDespite all the changes off the pitch under Sir Jim Ratcliffe and speculation over Ten Hag’s potential departure, Merson is not convinced it will be a quick fix.And he even vowed to get a Manchester United tattoo if they finish above Arsenal next season.“It was shocking,” said Merson to start his rant on Sky Sports.“It’s not good enough. You can’t lose nine games at home – this is Man Utd.”Most read in FootballBEST FREE BET SIGN UP OFFERS FOR UK BOOKMAKERSThe ex-England ace explained that United cannot blame their dire displays on injuries as he highlighted how Luton and Chelsea have had to deal with players sidelined as well this term.He continued: “I don’t care how many of those players get fit next season, there’s no way they are finishing above Arsenal next season. Not a chance.Where the Soccer Saturday stars are now“And I’ll have another tattoo as well. No chance. They are 30 points behind.”That came after Merson had earlier declared that he had zero faith in Tottenham doing Arsenal a favour by beating title rivals Manchester City on Tuesday. The Cityzens went top by thrashing Fulham 4-0 on Saturday, only for the Gunners to overtake them again with their win at Old Trafford. But Arsenal have played a match more, with City’s game in hand coming tomorrow against the Gunners’ neighbours in North London. And Merson made a wild bet live on TV as he insisted that Spurs have no chance of getting a result. He said: “Arsenal are probably going to finish second.READ MORE SUN STORIES“If you’re relying on Tottenham to win or draw a football match… yeah… no.“If they win that, I will have a Tottenham tattoo. Michael Owen – He has to go
“He cannot, simply cannot, manage this team next season. He’s not good enough.”
Teddy Sheringham – Might stay if he wins Cup but should go
“If United win the FA Cup, he could stay. But, for me, changes are needed and United need to get it done sooner than later.”
    Jamie Carragher – Sacked
“I don’t see how Erik ten Hag stays. It’s just performance after performance.”
Gary Neville – Stay if he wins the FA Cup
“To sack a manager who’s won two trophies in his first two seasons at the club I think would be extreme.”
Louis Saha – On the fence
“I don’t see it as clearly but they need changes from the players but they need changes from him as well.”
    Alan Shearer – Sacked
“I believe the future of the Man Utd manager is already determined. Even if they win the FA Cup I think he’s gone.” More
