Jeff Stelling feared Sky Sports pal Chris Kamara was latest ex-footballer to suffer from dementia over thyroid problems

SKY star Jeff Stelling feared his Soccer Saturday pal Chris Kamara had become the latest ex-footballer to be suffering from dementia when he was struck down by thyroid problems. The pair have worked together on the show for the best part of two decades, winning the hearts of the nation.

But it turned out the lovable reporter was suffering with thyroid problemsCredit: Getty
And Jeff, 66, admits, like the rest of us, he was worried when Kammy seemed far from his usual snappy self while reporting from matches. The pundit appeared distant and tired, with his speech noticeably slower.
But it turned out his problems were the result of an underactive thyroid – or hypothyroidism.
Jeff, who announced he will be taking part in his fourth March for Men charity walk in aid of Prostate Cancer UK this summer, said: “I had no idea what was wrong, although I was obviously aware Kammy wasn’t himself.
“You didn’t need to be very observant to notice he just wasn’t the same Kammy we’ve come to know and love over the years – someone extraverted, bubbly, sharp and who would stop you in your tracks.
“I knew there was something wrong and I thought it might be the onset of some early form of dementia caused by heading balls throughout his football career.
“There are so many former players suffering from that now.
“So I know Kammy was relieved when the problem was diagnosed and we were all relieved too.”
Kammy – famous for saying “Unbelievable Jeff” – is now having his condition treated with medication.

Jeff added: “The thing with Kammy is he is one of the real good guys. He works his socks off and has brought light and fun to the nation on TV for 20-odd years.
“He has become a national treasure, really against all the odds because he had a good football career, but not a glittering one, which is what you usually expect from someone who becomes a household name through punditry.
“His career on camera, to be honest, is more successful than his career on the football field. And I’m not saying that to belittle it because he was a blooming good footballer.
“But he has been absolutely sensational on TV. So when we found out it was a thyroid problem which could be treated it was fantastic news.
“And the real Chris Kamara will be back next season.”
Jeff hopes Kammy will join him on his charity walk in the summer when he will pace four marathons in four different regions of the country in four days in August and September in aid of Prostate Cancer UK.
The presenter, whose previous three walks have raised more than £1million for the charity, hung up his hiking boots after his last trek in 2019.
But he decided to do another after his pals Lloyd Pinder – who joined him on his first walk in 2016 – and former England, Liverpool and Tottenham keeper Ray Clemence, who handed him a medal at the finish line in London in 2019, both died from the disease last year.
The walk will start in the North East – home to Lloyd’s beloved Sunderland – on August 30, before heading to Yorkshire, where he lived, the following day.
It will then take place in Liverpool, where Clemence made his name on September 1 before finishing in London, where he played for Spurs, on September 4.
Jeff will be joined on the walk by a number of sporting pals and members of the public can take part too.

Werner’s numbers ‘terrible,’ blasts Souness as Chelsea legend Hasselbaink says he ‘has to be calmer & more calculated’

CHELSEA striker Timo Werner has to improve in front of goal. That’s the verdict of Graeme Souness and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink after the German again passed up a number of chances in the Blues’ narrow win over top four rivals Leicester City.
Timo Werner must improve in front of goal, say Graeme Souness and Jimmy Floyd HasselbainkCredit: Reuters
Werner had two goals disallowed against Leicester – although he did win a penaltyCredit: Times Newspapers Ltd
Werner, bought for £47.5million last summer, has struggled in front of goal all season, managing just 12 goals in 50 games – with only six of those coming in the Premier League.
He saw two goals ruled out in the 2-1 win at Stamford Bridge – one for offside and one for handball – and was wasteful on a number of occasions.
Werner, who won the decisive penalty, scored 34 goals for RB Leipzig and was expected to push Chelsea to a title challenge this season, but has drawn heavy criticism throughout the campaign.
Sky Sports pundit Souness blasted: “If Chelsea had been going through a difficult time, [Werner] would have been the target, above any other player at Chelsea, for criticism.
“His numbers are terrible for a centre forward at a big club, but he always looks like he gets chances because he is rapid, he is electric, and he would beat most people in a sprint.
“You see him afterwards celebrating with the supporters and he does not look down in spirits, which is a great thing.
“He was a goalscorer before he came to Chelsea, and it may yet happen for him, but Jorginho, your midfield player, as your top scorer with seven goals, you cannot be successful if you are relying on penalties at the highest level.”
Liverpool legend Souness then said that Chelsea must find a prolific goalscorer if they are to compete with Man City et al for the title next season.
🗣”His numbers are terrible.” Graeme Souness talks about the season Timo Werner has had and says he needs more goals for Chelsea pic.twitter.com/mAtrRkuLIn— Football Daily (@footballdaily) May 18, 2021

Hasselbaink scored 87 goals for ChelseaCredit: AP:Associated Press
He added: “They will have to find [a goalscorer], whether it is Timo Werner or [Kai] Havertz or someone they bring in.
“They have to get an out-and-out goalscorer, and I think that is the final piece of the jigsaw for them.”
Chelsea legend and current Burton Albion boss Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who scored 87 goals for the Blues, agreed with Souness – although did complement his impressive all-round game.
“I like Timo Werner’s spirit, his energy, he keeps on going, but when you are a striker at a big team, you wait for these moments when you are playing in a big match,” Hasselbaink said.
“These decisive moments are when you have to be there and put the ball in the net, and for me he has not done that enough.
“What I do like is that he puts himself in positions where he gets opportunities. Now the last bit, he has to do better. He has to be calmer and more calculated.

“Having six goals is not good enough, it is not a good return, and he knows that.
“Does he give up? No. Do I like that? Yes. But in big games you are going to get one or two big games, you have to be there and you have to make the difference.”
Hasselbaink then added that he could see Werner becoming the main man up front for Chelsea next season.
“The good thing is he is getting himself those opportunities, he is always there for that final ball,” the Dutchman added.
‘Will he become calmer? Time will tell. Do I have hope? Yes, because he keeps getting those chances, and he is stubborn like that, and you need to have that as a striker.
    “Let’s see.”
“It’s been the unluckiest season I’ve ever had!”Timo Werner speaks to Sky Sports about his disallowed goals and what tonight’s win means for #CFC’s #UCL hopes…💭 pic.twitter.com/u1XG5Pwxz2— Sky Sports Premier League (@SkySportsPL) May 18, 2021

Werner was in high spirits after the game and could be dancing after the final whistle – although he bemoaned his terrible lucky.
He told Sky Sports: “I think the first half it was a picture of the whole season for me.
“Until now I think every time I was close but at the end not really close.
“I think for me maybe the unluckiest season I’ve ever had or I ever will have maybe.”

Floyd Mayweather vs Logan Paul to be on Sky Sports Box Office in UK as more details emerge about blockbuster exhibition

FLOYD MAYWEATHER’S bout with YouTuber Logan Paul will be shown on Sky Sports Box Office in the UK.0-1 novice Paul takes on 50-0 former ring king Mayweather in an eight-round exhibition in Miami, Florida on June 6.

Logan’s brother Jake later got involved in a brawl with Mayweather at the presserCredit: Alamy
And fight fans will have to shell out to watch it, although no fixed UK price has yet been announced by Sky Sports.
It was confirmed on Thursday that the event will cost US viewer £35 on Showtime pay-per-view.
However, the usual PPV price for Sky Sports boxing events is £19.99, although the last two Anthony Joshua fights have both been £24.99.
The likes of Badou Jack, Jean Jean Pascal and Jarrett Hurd will all feature on the undercard of the event.
Social media star Paul reckons he will earn £14million for his exhibition fight against the all-time great.
And yet the 26-year-old will still receive less than a fifth of Mayweather’s reported purse, which is said to be a lucrative £72m.
It will be Paul’s third bout in a boxing ring, the other two coming as a mix of amateur and professional contests.
The 26-year-old drew an amateur fight against fellow internet star KSI in 2018, before turning pro and losing their rematch the following year.

Premier League confirm new £5.1BILLION TV deal which continues Sky, BT, Amazon and BBC agreement for three more years

PREMIER LEAGUE chiefs have confirmed agreement on a new £5.1billion TV deal. The deal to ‘rollover’ the current contracts with Sky, BT, Amazon Prime and the BBC for a further three seasons was confirmed ‘unanimously’ at a virtual meeting of the 20 clubs on Wednesday.
The Premier League have agreed a new three-year £5.1BILLION TV dealCredit: Getty
But as a condition to get Government approval to bypass the normal bidding process, the clubs agreed to give up £100million between them over the next four years – with the money spread throughout the football pyramid.
Explaining the deal, which comes into effect from the end of next season, a Prem spokesman said: “This agreement is based on the renewals safeguarding the world-leading levels of financial support committed to the football community through solidarity, youth development and wider community and good causes contributions.
“The UK renewals for the next broadcast cycle – from seasons 2022-23 to 2024-25 – will be concluded at the same overall value as the current arrangements between the Premier League and its broadcast partners.
“As part of the Premier League’s developing strategic plan, the renewals will provide financial certainty to clubs throughout professional football as a result of maintaining current levels of support and enables the League to commit to increased funding.
“This will give security and continuity throughout the pyramid until at least 2025.
“Pre-pandemic, the Premier League budgeted to commit £1.5bn to the pyramid over a three-year period, more than any other sporting organisation provides to its community.
“That commitment will be maintained during the next rights cycle and will be supplemented by an additional £100m of funding.
“This additional £100m will be provided over the next four years only, and will extend support to areas of the football community particularly vulnerable to the impacts of Covid-19.

Liverpool boast the most-valuable squad in the Premier League

“The additional funding will be available to more than 1,000 clubs in the National League system, women’s and girls’ football, EFL League One and League Two clubs and the Football Foundation.
“It will also support a number of football-wide projects, which will include the Premier League’s work looking at head injuries in football, anti-discrimination and fan groups who receive funding from the Premier League.”
The deal means Sky will retain the lion’s share of live matches with 128 matches, BT showing 52 and Amazon Prime 20.
But in a slight tweak, BT announced that, in European weeks it would move its Saturday lunchtime game to 7:45pm if the match featured a team that had played Champions League football the previous Wednesday.
Jurgen Klopp, Pep Guardiola and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer all complained bitterly about being forced into lunchtime action after Euro matches this season.
    ‘SIGNIFICANT IMPACT ON FOOTBALL’
Prem chief executive Richard Masters said: “The Premier League would like to express our gratitude to our broadcast partners for their continued commitment to the Premier League and support for the football pyramid.
“We are hugely appreciative of the Government agreeing in principle to allow this arrangement and for their continued support for the Premier League and the English game.
“Covid-19 has had a significant impact on football, and renewals with our UK broadcast partners will reduce uncertainty, generate stability and promote confidence within the football pyramid.
“We know that, once concluded, this will have a positive impact on the wider industry, jobs and tax revenues and will enable us to maintain and increase our existing solidarity and community financial commitments to the football pyramid for the next four years, even though we are yet to understand the full impact of the pandemic.
“It comes at an important time and will enable us to plan ahead with increased certainty against a more stable economic backdrop.”

Sky Sports’ coverage of doomed Man Utd clash with Liverpool hit by Ofcom complaints after protesters storm Old Trafford

Sky Sports received complaints after their pundits argued for and against the protestCredit: Sky Sports
One group blocked the players’ route to the team bus at their Lowry Hotel base while hundreds turned up at Old Trafford before the Liverpool game.
Protestors then forced open an access door to the United pitch and rushed inside, leading to the game’s postponement in scenes shown live on Sky.
But the channel’s coverage of the episode upset some with 148 viewers contacting the broadcast regulator to complain.
Following the incident, Sky allowed pundits Gary Neville, Jamie Carragher and Graeme Souness to express their views on the protest.
Former United star Neville defended the protestors’ right to make a stand following the European Super League debacle.
He said: “I think all football fans should unite today behind what United fans have done because what [the Glazers] did two weeks ago was dangerous for English football.”
Likewise, Liverpool legend Carragher insisted the protest was ‘peaceful’ and urged fans of his old club to back their rival fans on this matter.
Fellow ex-Red Souness criticised the pitch invaders for targeting the Sky gantry with missiles.

Sky Sports pundit Andy Walker banned by Rangers AND former club Celtic after criticising both rival sides

SKY SPORTS pundit Andy Walker is at the centre of a bitter Old Firm row after he was banned from Ibrox AND Parkhead.SunSport understands the 56-year was told to stay away by the livid Gers after criticising the club’s finances on air.
Sky Sports pundit Andy Walker has been banned by both Rangers and CelticCredit: Kenny Ramsay – The Sun Glasgow
And it has now emerged the former Hoops striker has also been barred from the very ground he made his name at in his playing days and was a centenary Double winning hero.
Celtic are believed to still be furious over Walker’s outspoken criticism of their controversial trip to Dubai in January for a winter training camp.
We can reveal the stunned Scotsman – one of Sky Sports’ leading commentators north of the border since 2009 – has turned to lawyers over his situation.
Sky – who pour £25million a year into the SPFL for coverage of the Premiership – have yet to make comment.
Regular Walker was replaced for Sunday’s derby at Ibrox by James McFadden who provided co-commentary alongside Ally McCoist and Ian Crocker.
Champions Rangers are refusing to budge from their stance against the ex-Scotland star who had two spells with Celtic.
The Hoops – who suffered widespread flak for heading to the Middle East while the pandemic had a grip of the country – are also in no mood to bow down.
Walker – who played 150 league games and scored 39 goals for Celtic – was unavailable for comment.

He angered Rangers last month when he said it would be hypocritical of the Old Firm to disregard talk of a European Super League as both have been angling for a move away from Scottish football.
Walker also made comments about Rangers’ finances that have left the Ibrox club deeply unhappy.
This followed his on-air condemnation of Celtic’s trip to Dubai in January in the middle of the coronavirus lockdown.
The now departed Parkhead boss Neil Lennon accused Walker of ‘spreading lies and insults over his players’ professionalism.
Speaking during a live Sky game, Walker said: “I think what we’ve seen is some dismal governance, first of all from the joint response group. This is a body that also agreed to sign off on Celtic’s trip to Dubai.
“At a time when they’re approaching the government to plead a bit of poverty, apparently there’s no money in Scottish football.

“I’m guessing this trip Celtic went on to Dubai cost hundreds of thousands of pounds. They chartered their own aircraft, they stayed for five nights in five-star accommodation for, I don’t know, 20, 30 people?
“It’s extraordinary. And we’re also seeing some dismal governance from this club (Celtic). It is unbelievably arrogant to abuse your status as an elite sportsman.
“That was only brought in for international or European competition, not for a jolly in Dubai and I don’t know any club in Europe – any top club – who are thinking of going to sunnier climes to get some warm weather training.
“So I think what the Celtic supporters deserve is a bit of contrition from someone, anyone, with a bit of backbone at this club.
“Preferably Dermot Desmond because he’s the one that makes the big changes, he’s the one who could knock some heads together here.
“You’ve got to remember Celtic supporters are paying their season tickets to see all the big stars – they’re not seeing them tonight. That’s not their fault. They are being short changed, and it’s completely unacceptable.”
