‘You want a war? Now we have one’ – Guardiola turns on former pal Arteta as Man City’s rivalry with Arsenal hots up

PEP GUARDIOLA says his Manchester City reigning champions are ready to go to “war” with Arsenal. And the City boss called on Gunners chief Mikel Arteta to come clean over his “dark arts” claims during his 3½ years as Guardiola’s Etihad No 2.Pep Guardiola said he is ready to go to war with Mikel ArtetaCredit: PAErling Haaland and Gabriel clashed several times throughout the 2-2 epicArteta reckons the blockbuster title race will not ruin his relationship with close pal Guardiola.Arsenal defender Gabriel had stoked up the rivalry by demanding revenge in the February rematch after a fiery showdown with Erling Haaland — who threw the ball at him — in Sunday’s feisty 2-2 draw.Guardiola said: “Gabriel said it perfectly, ‘This is a war, we have to provoke the opponent’.”So, we have to think, ‘OK, you want a war? Now we have a war’. READ MORE IN FOOTBALL”I’m pretty sure Erling is not proud but, listen, with the type of challenge that Arsenal gave, I understand it.”Guardiola could not hide his anger at what could be viewed as a betrayal by long-term friend Arteta. The City boss, 53, insists he does not know what Arteta was referring to — and even wondered if it could be a reference to the club’s ongoing legal battle with the Premier League.Arteta said on Wednesday: “I was there for four years. I have all the information. So I know, believe me.”Most read in FootballMikel Arteta said he has “all the information” on life behind closed doors at the EtihadCredit: GettyAnd Pep Guardiola isn’t happy with Arteta’s commentsCredit: RexFOOTBALL FREE BETS AND SIGN UP DEALSSpaniard Guardiola added: “Next time, Mikel has to be more clear about exactly what he means. I have to see more clearly exactly what happened while he was here.“So hopefully this question has been asked of him and he can also answer now exactly what it means when he said he was here and he knows what’s happening here.Furious Pep Guardiola lashes out and kicks chair with Man City stars fuming at Arsenal’s stunning equaliser“It could be related to the process with the 115 charges — maybe it’s about that and he knows information.Pep Guardiola”Instead of being in the clouds there, he has to be more precise.”The fallout from the explosive Etihad clash is likely to put a huge strain on the relationship between Guardiola and Arteta — and increase the tension between title rivals City and Arsenal.Guardiola could be forgiven for feeling letdown as he spent 3½ years mentoring Arteta while he was on his coaching staff. The City gaffer then urged his club not to stand in the way of his assistant when Arsenal moved to appoint him as manager in 2019.And the champions even turned a blind eye to certain things that happened around his departure that they were not happy with.Yet Arteta insists that nothing can damage his relationship with Pep.Arsenal and City produced a Prem epic last weekend which ended with John Stones’ 98th-minute equaliser. We thought games like this had been lostSunSport’s NEIL CUSTIS hails chaotic Man City vs Arsenal clash as a return to the Premier League of yesteryear.FOR two teams who have done so much to take the game forward this really was a tremendous throwback. We thought these games had been lost.Real feisty encounters between two rivals fighting for the top honours. How we used to love it when Manchester United came up against Arsenal when Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger were in charge. When Roy Keane, watching on as a TV pundit here, used to clash with Patrick Vieira before a ball had been kicked. The Manchester derbies used to have it as well.In fact that were clashes everywhere throughout the league.Since then the emphasis on the beauty of the game, the tactical side, the ball playing centre-back, the false nine, the inverted full-backs have all come to the fore. But English football still loves something like this.Compare this to the two matches between this pair last season not least the really STALEmate here. Then along comes a blood and thunder classic.A match to set the tone for what we all hope will be a real title tussle to the end but with that added edge. While these two managers maybe good friends who knows we may even get the niggly comments in pre-match press conferences about each others teams. We knew we were in for something a bit different as straight from the kick-off Kai Havertz charged into Rodri and left him flawed. The first players’ melee ensued.Foreign coaches often scratch their heads as to why English crowds love stuff like this.Love a thumping tackle, or a bit of a barney. How that as much as any sweeping move gets them to the edge of their seats and there was plenty of that here.Jurrien Timber was employed on the right to combat the pace of Jeremy Doku.SO Doku just charged into him and floored him.Rodri was clearly seen as one of City’s key men so at a corner Thoams Party followed up Havertz’s early example and caught him behind the knee, and the player hobbled out of the action.Gabriel and Erling Haaland was a classic battle between a big centre-forward and an Arsenal centre-back who performs like greats of old like Tony Adams and Martin Keown.A player for whom a thumping tackle warrants the same high fives or celebrations as something defining at the other end of the pitch.Haaland did brilliantly to pull away William Saliba and slip behind Gabriel for his goal.Gabriel will have been fuming having kept the big Norwegian so quiet last season. He barely gave him another sniff of goal, barring a second-half header saved, as he stuck to him, the pair often pushing and shoving one another as Haaland became frustrated with his shadow.Leandro Trossard did not get his second yellow and therefore the only red for the actual barge on Bernardo as everyone first thought but for kicking the ball away after that. Both technical areas were a flurry of arm waving and shouting from the two managers. The staff on the two benches started having a go at each other and Guardiola had to intervene. In the press box one of Arsenal’s technical staff was losing it.As Arsenal players went down with cramp and played for time the boos went up.The fourth official was getting in the ear.Michael Oliver was being told he was not fit to referee by a large section of the home support. When Arsenal fans were spotted in the posh seats having been in the expensive tunnel club City fans shouted and pointed to try and get them ejected.Right at the end after City’s dramatic equaliser and the game restarted Haaland barged into Partey and every player on the pitch got involved even the two goalkeepers. At the final whistle the ref was harrangued. On the touchline Guardiola and Arteta hugged.Arteta, who worked under Pep at City from 2016 until his Gunners exit, said: “Sport will never get in my way of a personal relationship.“If our relationship was damaged because one draws and the other one wins, or the number of times they’ve beaten us, I would not talk to him any more.“They have beaten us …they won the last four titles and our relationship continues to be the same, so what has to change for that relationship to be over?“That is just not our relationship, especially the relationship I consider both of us have,“I love him, I respect him, I admire him and I admire his team and everything that he doesMikel Arteta“One thing is our profession, another is our personal relationship.”Arsenal were made to pay for their “dark arts” and “dirty” tactics by Stones’ late leveller.Asked if it was hard to stay pals with Pep due to the rivalry, Arteta added: “If those accusations affect you it’s because maybe they’re true.“If they don’t and you do Former Premier League captain cuts all ties with his father as he says ‘he did horrible things to people I love’

SHEFFIELD UNITED star Anel Ahmedhodzic has cut all ties with his father – claiming he has done “horrible things to people I love”.The defender’s allegations are the latest twist in a sad saga which also saw him withdraw from duty with Bosnia and quit international football.Anel Ahmedhodzic’s exit from Bosnia duty spilled into allegationsCredit: RexAhmedhodzic has won 24 Bosnia caps but suggested he’s had enoughCredit: GettyAhmedhodzic says he has reluctantly gone public after dad Mirsad alleged he was “under the influence of his wife and mother-in-law”.His father had earlier revealed he “did not consider” the 25-year-old his son “anymore” – suggesting he had been turned off his country by “bad people”.The former Blades’ skipper, whose club lost their Premier League spot last season, responded by accusing his dad of “manipulation, lies, scams and almost daily bullying”.The ex-Nottingham Forest man was “insulted” too by a claim his wife had “cast black magic” on him.READ MORE FOOTBALL NEWSAhmedhodzic explained he’d received hundreds of messages abusing him and his family after he pulled out of Nations League action. He blamed an injury, poor medical treatment and misinformation for his latest problems on international duty. Now Ahmedhodzic has spoken out on issues with his dad as “things can no longer be ignored”.In a statement shared by Balkan cable TV station N1, he said: “The only thing anyone wants from their father as a son is support and pride. Unfortunately, I got very little of that. Most read in Football”What I got most of the time was manipulation, lies, scams and almost daily bullying. “This is the type of man who shows his ‘power’ over women, but has never had the guts to stand up to another man.”Inside Angel Gomes’ rise from Man Utd wonderkid to England starAhmedhodzic added he had a “very good relationship with my mother” and supports her “financially”.He continued: “So when he [his father] says that I don’t care about my parents, it’s a complete lie. That’s not a man. “He goes after people I care about every time there’s a problem.  “He did horrible things to people I love but I don’t want to talk about that here. “There are so many reasons why I cut off contact with him. You will say ‘but he is your father, life is short’.”Trust me, I’ve tried many times to fix things, to forget what he did and every time I fix things, we end up back at the beginning and he doesn’t change at all, not even a little bit.”There have been many occasions when he has publicly insulted me since I married my wife, which he only does to make me angry and get a reaction from me.”Ahmedhodzic also reckoned his dad had “spoiled my reputation in England” with “completely untrue” statements that he “wanted to leave” the Blades. He insisted: “This is the city and the club that gave me the best memories of my life, including the birth of my son.”The Sweden-born ace, who joined United from Malmo two years later, also fiercely defended his partner. He said: “Saying my wife cast black magic on me is very insulting to me and especially to my wife because she is awesome.”It is very hard to find a woman who will take care of you like she does and I am very lucky that my son has such an amazing mother. Ahmedhodzic saw the Blades drop to the Championship this seasonCredit: Alamy”And then say that he doesn’t let me go to national team matches? It’s ridiculous.””She never missed a match, even when she was nine months’ pregnant… She is my biggest supporter and to say she won’t let me go is stupid, but what do you expect from a narcissist?”I am very disappointed, but not surprised that it has come to this. “I never wanted it to be public, but when you have a father who is actively trying to control you, push you down, and hurt your reputation, I had to do it.”Ahmedhodzic’s dad had earlier said: “No one is a better friend to my son than his parents, but when he listens to the wrong people, what happens to him happens.”That’s not my son anymore, I don’t consider him my son anymore. I wish him well. The best. “I fought the whole war, I was wounded three times. I wanted my son to play for the country that I created with my own blood, but he was turned away by bad people who think only of self-interest.” Ahmedhodzic Senior also suggested his son’s wife and her family had tried to separate Anel from his parents. He added: “I hid my feelings when they asked me how Anela was doing, I hid everything inside me.”It was difficult for me to answer the truth, I always said ‘he’s doing well, we talk to each other, etc.. Sven-Göran Eriksson gave me blank cheque after romp but I never cashed it even when he left me high & dry, says Ulrika

WHEN I look at Sven-Goran Eriksson now, I see a much diminished man. A man reduced by terminal illness, but also a man who, by his own admission, has had a good life.As The Sun told yesterday, he talks about his private life on his Amazon Prime film Sven, including his affair with me.Ulrika Jonsson opens up on her time with Sven-Göran ErikssonCredit: Scope FeaturesUlrika says: ‘I was single at the time and he confided that he wanted to end his relationship with Nancy Dell’Olio because it was sapping him of energy’Credit: Rex FeaturesAfter a night together, Sven popped a blank check in Ulrika’s pocket when she was not lookingWe first met in 2002, when I asked him for his autograph at a party held by Alastair Campbell, Tony Blair’s spin doctor. He replied to me in our native language, Swedish, asking for my telephone number so he could call me. I was single at the time and 34. He was 54 and confided that he wanted to end his relationship with Nancy Dell’Olio because it was sapping him of energy. He then proceeded to call me every day when he went on holiday with Nancy, telling me I was beautiful and how much he wanted to see me.READ MORE ON SVENWhen he returned, the day after his 54th birthday, he visited me and we slept together. This was no great passionate affair. It was devoid of passion. He had all this power and money, yet he was the weakest man I have ever met.During our dalliance he was heading to his place in Portugal for the night between England games and asked me to join him.He said I should book myself on his flight and he would reimburse me. I said no way, I pay my own way — I’ve never taken money from a man. Most read in Football‘Pawns in a game’It was a point of principle. We met in the Club Lounge at Heathrow, pretending we had just met, and sat next to each other on the flight, almost giggling all the way.Legendary ex-England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson kept terminal pancreas cancer secret for a year to enjoy time with familyThen we spent the night at his place, where his housekeepers cooked us a meal. The following morning we left for the airport together and, in the car, he put a blank cheque from Coutts in my pocket when I wasn’t looking. He presented me with a blank cheque which he put in my pocket when I wasn’t lookingI keep it for posterity. But it might have been nice to fill it out at some point for all the hassle he brought me!When news of our affair broke, he didn’t confirm what went on between us. This meant I was left high and dry, even to the point that people believed I had made it up to get Press attention. That really angered me.I was an independent, working woman who did not voluntarily need to create a drama around my life for attention. He says in his documentary that he didn’t commit a crime, and he’s right about that. But he did do wrong. And he simply didn’t really care about much of life.As far as I could tell, he cared only about three things: His two children, who he adored. And football.Even when we were in Portugal, I asked him about his ex, the mother of his children. He said he had moved the wedding day in fav- our of a football match and she wasn’t happy. And I wondered if he was romantic and asked him how he proposed.I was surprised when he confided that she had proposed to him, which confirmed to me that I don’t think he had a romantic bone in his body. I know people didn’t understand why we were seeing each other, as it was an odd connection.Initially it was the Swedish thing that united us — and football. We talked about football a lot. But he was chivalrous and, in his heart, he was a kind man.He brought a bottle of Veuve Clicquot Champagne — without fail — every time he came to my house. No ‘words of affection’For me, he showed me kindness and I’d just been going through the most horrendous time with being abandoned by my sick daughter’s biological father and worrying if she was going to get through her operations. When someone shows you kindness, it grabs your attention. In the film, he says he does have feelings, but he doesn’t show them. I think that’s honest and true. We never exchanged words of affection — it wasn’t that kind of set-up.I just saw him when he could get away from Nancy or was on the way to football games. She should be grateful for me raising her profile, she made a career out of ‘refusing to accept that she had been cheated on’Ulrika on Nancy Dell’OlioNancy admits in the film that she only stuck with him because she could get something out of it, which strongly suggests that she only really was with him because of the fame and the glory. She should be grateful for me raising her profile. She seemingly made a career out of “refusing to accept that she had been cheated on”.Before news of the affair between me and Sven broke, she was just the Italian girlfriend of the England manager. When it hit the headlines Nancy was suddenly famous. And she used that to her advantage. She’d have never been on Strictly Come Dancing if it wasn’t for me.Sven told me she was very fiery — it was a volatile relationship and I felt it was clear that he didn’t really, truly care about her.But he never promised me he would leave her, because I never asked him to.I sensed he feared her. And he confirms that in the film.He says he was afraid (of leaving her). He admitted to me that she “loved” the attention she was getting from the media, so it’s little wonder if she didn’t want to give that up.And obviously, apart from women attacking each other, there is the problem that misogyny is still verymuch alive and kicking in the world of football. Women continue to be viewed as pawns in a game of utmost importance, ruled over by men who show little but disdain for the opposite sex.I’ve never in my life fought over a man. I know Nancy was clinging to Sven, but she really needn’t have worried. She threw insults at me because she didn’t believe the brief affair was true. Surely her beef should have been with him?In the film, Sven’s son says how his dad doesn’t stress about things, and that was my experience, too.He never got concerned about things and said to me, “Why worry about something which might not happen?”.’Thinker perhaps more than a doer’He’s bright and studied philosophy, which is probably what brought a new and different approach to being England boss. Many didn’t like that he wasn’t demonstrably expressive, but that was just the way he was.Nancy says in the film that Sven is a narcissist, but I think that might be unfair. I just think he’s a very simple-minded person. And by that I mean he only puts energy into the things that are important to him. He’s pragmatic. Not a practical man, however. He proudly showed me his hands and said “these have never done a day’s hard work”.Sven is right, of course, about his outlook on life now. Life is short and I believe he has certainly made the most of itSven is certainly a thinker, perhaps more than a doer.I extracted myself from the situation when he clearly wasn’t going to ’fess up and carried on going out publicly with Nancy.I certainly didn’t become a Princess Di character, where there were “three of us” in that relationship. For a while he kept phoning me to speak to me or ask me to see him. He even got his agent to phone my agent to ask if I would wait for him after the World Cup. I declined.Sven is right, of course, about his outlook on life now.Life is short and I believe he has certainly made the most of it.He has led a life according to his own wills and desires.I’m sure he has regrets over some of his actions, but what good are regrets when the clock is ticking? We can but do our best.I bear him no ill will.READ MORE SUN STORIESI hope he squeezes the best out of whatever life he has left and that, on reflection, he realises that to err is to be human. He didn’t get it all right.
