He went on to play 68 times for the first-team, before going on to star for Parma, Inter Milan, Juventus and Real Madrid.
His crowning moment came at international level in 2006 when he captained Italy to World Cup glory – a feat he received the Ballon d’Or for later that year.
But he always remembered his roots and insisted he would ride from Rome to Naples if his hometown team claimed the scudetto.
Napoli had not won a league title since 1990 before this season – when Diego Maradona led them to the Serie A crown.

But that wait for an Italian championship came to an end last month when Luciano Spalletti’s men cantered to the title.
Napoli finished the season 16 points clear of second-place Lazio, with the triumph sparking jubilant celebrations in Naples.
And Cannavaro was a man of his word as he rode the 158 miles [254 kilometres] from Rome to Naples in under seven hours in honour of Napoli’s title win.
    Speaking on Instagram, he said: “Rome-Naples the return…. and paid scudetto bet 💙💪🏻👍 254km , 6h 55m 37 [km/h] average ✈️✈️✈️✈️.”

Since retiring from playing, Cannavaro has coached in the Middle East, China and Italy.

And according to Calcio Mercato, Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio flew to London on Wednesday for discussions with the Premier League club.
Lukaku, 30, was on loan at Inter from Chelsea last season and is keen to remain in Italy.
But he still has three years left on his Stamford Bridge contract, so any move will not come cheap.
As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Koulibaly, 31, is another linked with a move to Inter following a difficult first campaign in West London.

And Mauricio Pochettino is understood to be in the market for a keeper despite Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy both fighting for the No1 spot.
Cameroonian Onana, 27, has enjoyed a sensational campaign with Inter and is thought to be Chelsea’s first-choice signing in between the sticks.
Wingback Denzel Dumfries, 27, is another Inter star linked with a move to the Blues, although Chelsea are not understood to be seeking out wide-right defenders as they already have Reece James and recently signed Malo Gusto from Lyon.
But going the other way, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Trevoh Chalobah are thought to be Inter targets as Ausilio lands in England to begin negotiations.

It is widely understood Chelsea need to sell players this summer to deflate their huge 33-man squad.
And due to Financial Fair Play regulations, they also need to balance the books after spending £600million on players across the last two transfer windows.
A number of players are being linked with a Stamford Bridge exit.
Mason Mount is in talks to join Manchester United, while N’Golo Kante looks set to move to Saudi Arabia.
Mateo Kovacic has received interest from Manchester City, Christian Pulisic is being monitored by AC Milan, Newcastle are in for Conor Gallagher, and Arsenal are pursuing Kai Havertz.

Italian football has enjoyed something of a resurgence in recent years, with four different winners in the last four consecutive campaigns.
This season, Italian teams reached the finals of all three European club competitions – Inter in the Champions League, Roma in the Europa League and Fiorentina in the Conference League.
And now bosses want to build on that success by creating a more attractive brand to investors.
Speaking to AS, De Siervo said: “Our league abroad will be called ‘Serie A: Made in Italy’. We have begun the journey to regain international leadership.

“Funds have started to deal with Italy because we are the league with the most potential, having been the best for decades”.
The 54-year-old added: “We have to improve the stadiums, but the beauty of our cities and the history they bring is unique.
“It’s not just a league, it’s a country. Italy is a dream for many people, beyond football”.
The CEO also spoke about the importance of TV rights and revenues.

He said: “Piracy costs us about €1 billion every three years. We’ve finally got a law that we had been asking about for 3 years.
“Parliament passed it unanimously. We have confidence in the new platforms that can close IP addresses in half an hour”.
He also discussed the league’s fight against racist abuse in stadiums.
He declared: “No tolerance. The 170 fans who insulted Lukaku will never again enter a stadium”.
This comes as both Serie A and La Liga have been criticised for their handling of racism towards players. More
