Jose Mourinho ‘to sign ex-£40m Arsenal target on free transfer’ as Roma build for potential Champions League campaign

JOSE MOURINHO is closing in on signing Houssem Aouar on a free transfer. The Lyon playmaker, 24, was a long-term target for Arsenal and Liverpool.

Both Premier League clubs were heavily linked with a £40million-plus move, especially to the Emirates way back in 2018.
However, he stayed put with his boyhood French club – racking up 231 appearances – although just 16 of those have come this season as he was frozen out amid speculation over his future.
But according to Sky Italia, Aouar has reached an agreement to join Roma when his Lyon contract expires this summer.
The deal is said to just need signatures before being completed.

That will come as a blow to Real Betis and even Manchester United, with both clubs said to be interested and monitoring the situation.
But Aouar looks set to join the Giallorossi and work under Mourinho at the Stadio Olimpico.
Roma – who still have hopes of rising up from seventh to qualify for the Champions League – were first interested in the midfielder last summer.
Aouar joined the Lyon academy aged 11 in 2009 and made his senior first-team debut in February 2017.

He was handed the No8 jersey as a teenager ahead of the 2017-18 season and was nominated for the Golden Boy award the following year.
Aouar forced his way into the 2019-20 Champions League Team of the Season as Lyon knocked Juventus and Manchester City out on the way to the semi-finals.
He earned one senior cap for France in a friendly in October 2020 – after twice pulling out of the squad with injury and Covid.
However, in March 2023 he switched international allegiance to Algeria, the homeland of his parents – and admitted he “regretted” playing for France.

Reporters in Italy said the crowd were chanting “gypsy s***” towards the 23-year-old.
In response, referee Daniele Doveri stopped the game.
However, the shocking chants then came back stronger following the restart.
Serbian striker Vlahovic then silenced the crowd with a stunning late goal deep into stoppage time to add to Englishman Samuel Iling-Junior’s first-half effort.

Following his goal, the former Arsenal transfer target aimed a shushing gesture to the crowd.
Vlahovic was then given a yellow card for his celebration.
Italian journalist Leonardo Bertozzi slammed the procedure after the chants – before questioning whether a caution should have been given to Vlahovic.
He wrote on Twitter: “The protocol (when followed) is inefficient and the lack of severe punishment is practically an invitation to repeat these cases…

“Is it worth stopping the game and ignoring the context of the outburst afterwards?”
This echoes sickening scenes last month when Inter Milan striker Romelu Lukaku was sent off following his shushing celebration after being on the end of racist chants from Juventus fans.
Comments made by Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini following the incident were also slammed as “disgusting” by journalist Marco Giordano.
Gasperini told Sky Sport after the game: “Fighting racism? Yes, but we need to differentiate: we too have players like [Mario] Pasalic or [Berat] Djimsiti.
“We don’t need to lump everything together.”
Both Atalanta stars Gasperini named in his interview, like Vlahovic, hail from the Balkans. More

They have sounded out Greenwood’s camp.

Milan and Roma are also keen on signing Greenwood.
There have also been noises about a move to Turkey too.

But Juve hope having Paul Pogba in the squad will sway things their way.
Greenwood’s alleged rape and assault charges were dropped in February.
He has not featured for United since January 2022.
And the forward is currently training alone away from their Carrington base.

Greenwood, 21, still has two years left  on his £75,000-a-week contract.
And United fear they will struggle to attract a serious fee if they opted to sell.
That makes a long-term loan his likeliest chance of a move.
But that’s only as long as the club Greenwood joins covers his wages. More

Giuntoli famously discovered striker Kevin Lasagna while he was playing in Serie D, signing the eventual seven-time Italy international for only £20,000.
Just months later, Giuntoli sold Lasagna to Serie A side Udinese for £4million, sealing his reputation as a bargain hunter and master negotiator.
And United fans were left excited by the claims, with one saying: “I am here for this.”
