Andrea Pirlo to change Cristiano Ronaldo’s role at Juventus by ditching ‘Sarriball’ to start winning ball up pitch

ANDREA PIRLO has a new role for Cristiano Ronaldo at Juventus as he looks to ditch ‘Sarriball’.
The boss has introduced a new “methodology” to help his players win the ball high up the pitch.

Juventus adopted the Sarriball style of play last season – which is former boss Maurizio Sarri’s famed possession-based approach.
But the new Juventus manager has implemented a training regime to change his team’s approach.
Pirlo told JTV via Goal: “The aggression and the desire to win the ball back after losing it, that’s something we are working on a lot.
“Looking at the last Champions League, the teams that went all the way were the ones who were trying to recover the ball in the shortest possible time.

“That must be a characteristic that distinguishes us.
“We will give all of ourselves, we will certainly have a great desire to show the fans that Juventus want to win the 10th consecutive Scudetto and possibly reach the end of the Champions League.
“There’s a great desire and high expectations, but we are here, and we want to do our best.”
Pirlo insisted spirits are high in the Juventus camp – even with some players away on international duty.

He continued: “The lads are eager to do well, they have found a new methodology with some new exercises they have never done and therefore this already brings enthusiasm.
“The path will be long, also because we don’t have a lot of time to work with many players who are away. But we are working well with those we have available.
“I hope I will have transmitted some concepts we are working on already for the first day and hope to find something in the middle of the pitch.”

Lionel Messi obliterates Cristiano Ronaldo in who is best debate, according to stats from last decade

FOOTBALL’S age-old debate over who is the real GOAT has FINALLY been answered, with Lionel Messi easily beating Cristiano Ronaldo.
Stats show the Barcelona superstar – whose father Jorge says he can leave the club for free now – has dominated his Portuguese rival over the last decade.

Football fans have argued endlessly over which player deserves to be crowned the best on the planet.
The pair have collected 11 Ballon d’Or trophies between them, but this is a debate that will long outlive their careers.
Messi, 33, has spent his entire career with Barcelona where has won the LaLiga title ten times and four Champions League titles.
Juventus star Ronaldo, 35, has won league titles in Spain, England and Italy as well the Champions League five times.

However, WhoScored have used over 20 sets of data to rate their performances over the last decade.
    And there’s one clear winner.
    WHO’S THE GOAT?
Messi has dominated Spain’s top-flight with an average match rating of 8.6/10 over the last ten years.
Ronaldo has managed an average rating of 8.3/10 during his time with Real Madrid and now Juventus.

The statistics claim there has only been one season in the last decade that Ronaldo has matched Messi on the pitch.
Both of the stars were given a ranking of 8.3/10 for their efforts during the 2013-14 campaign.
And Messi was way ahead of his Ballon d’Or rival in the most recent season, despite scoring fewer goals.
In all competitions, the Barcelona star laid on 24 assists and scored 34 goals in 46 appearances.

Ronaldo racked up just five assists – miles adrift of Messi – and scored 35 goals – just one more than the Barca star – in 46 matches for Juventus.
Twelve players, including Deco and Gonzalo Higuain, have had their say on who is the better player out of the two.
The pair have also given their opinions on each other when quizzed about their rivalry on and off the pitch.

Man Utd star Chris Smalling ‘on brink of Roma transfer for £18m as breakthrough is made over permanent deal’

CHRIS Smalling is on the verge of sealing an £18million switch from Manchester United to Roma.
United were demanding £20million for the defender, but are likely to accept the £18million fee plus bonuses, according to Sky Sports Italy.

The deal seemed to be going nowhere as the Italian outfit were only willing to fork out £15million, which United rejected.
Roma were keen to retain Smalling’s services after his impressive year-loan stint with the club.
The 30-year-old revealed he was devastated to be leaving Roma and was willing to take a wage-cut to make the deal happen.
In an emotional post on his Instagram page, Smalling said: “I’m gutted that I can’t finish what we started this season.”

He made 30 appearances in Serie A, and his stellar performances earned him the title “Smalldini”, in reference to Italian legend Paolo Maldini.
Other Italian icons lined up to praise Smalling, with Franco Baresi saying: “I was not sure an English defender could get used to Italian football as it is so different to the Premier League. Smalling’s attitude and approach has been good.”
Smalling was sent out on loan after falling down the pecking order at United, behind Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has no objections to the move, as he plans to free up room in his squad for more new signings.

After splashing out on new midfield ace Donny van de Beek, United need to sell before making more signings as they aim to mount an assault for the title next season.
Although Smalling has his sights firmly set on Roma, if the deal does fall through Newcastle, Everton and West Ham are said to be interested in his signature.

Smalling and Rojo return to Man Utd training with futures up in air as Solskjaer plans more transfer dealings

DEFENSIVE pair Chris Smalling and Marcus Rojo were among the star names to return to Manchester United with their futures up in the air.
Smalling, 30, and Rojo, also 30, both spent last season out on loan.

But with their next moves yet to be sorted out, they were pictured arriving at Carrington for pre-season training.
Smalling, pictured driving a Ferrari, impressed at Roma last season with the Italians still keen to make a permanent move for the centre-half.
But United are holding out for £20million.
Another facing the axe at Old Trafford is playmaker Jesse Lingard, 27, who arrived for training in a Lamborghini.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – snapped arriving in his Range Rover – is a fan of Lingard, having coached him at youth level.
But the Old Trafford boss is open to selling the inconsistent playmaker if an acceptable offer comes in.
United have already signed 23-year-old Donny van De Beek for £40million and also want to bring in a defender.
Marcus Rashford, 22, who pulled out of England’s Nations League squad, was also pictured pulling into Carrington.

Greenwood said: “I’d say Marcus is my inspiration because he’s come through the same pathway.
“He’s helped me a lot, he’s done the same, he’s been in my position and knows how it feels.
“It’s nice to have someone like that, someone to look up to and I’ve played with him as well which is another bonus.
“He’s a good lad, we’re all proud of him, we’re all looking after him and it’s amazing what he’s trying to do.”

Arturo Vidal available on free transfer with Barcelona desperate to clear him from wage bill

ARTURO VIDAL has been told that he will be able to leave Barcelona on a free as the club no longer require his services.
He will reportedly be allowed to leave on a free transfer as new Barca boss Ronald Koeman aims to cut the wage bill at the club.

It has been reported that Vidal’s exit will clear £8million from Barca’s payroll, according to Forbes.

Barcelona ace Vidal still has a year left on his contract, but Koeman would rather let him go now than keep him at the Nou Camp for another season.
Vidal’s departure along with several other older players in the squad, will make way for younger faces in the Barca first-team.
European giants PSG were eyeing up a move for Vidal, but Inter Milan have swooped in, and a move to the Serie A appears to be imminent.

His transfer to Milan is already considered to be a done deal, according to reports.
Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio claimed on air that, “It’s only a matter of time that Vidal signs for Inter.”
Di Marzio added that the only thing holding up the deal is for Vidal and Barca to mutually agree on the terms of the contract’s termination.
Inter have reached a personal agreement with Vidal said to be worth £5.3million per year, according to FootballESPANA.

Vidal has expressed his frustration at Barca’s reliance on its academy to produce new talent, and fears that his soon-to-be old club is in danger of getting left behind.
In a YouTube rant to Daniel Habif, Vidal said: “Barcelona have to change their way of thinking.
“Football has moved on a lot and the whole DNA thing is being left behind because other teams are improving in other aspects.
“The last three years are not what a team like Barcelona deserves.
“The best team in the world cannot have 13 professional players. You cannot always win with DNA.”

Man Utd failed in transfer bid for ‘next Pirlo’ Sandro Tonali as midfielder only had eyes for AC Milan, Brescia confirm

MANCHESTER UNITED missed out on Sandro Tonali because the midfield starlet is “in love” with AC Milan.
The Serie A side are set to beat United, city rivals Inter and Barcelona to the ace dubbed the ‘next Andrea Pirlo’.

    1

Like Pirlo, Tonali has come through the Brescia youth system and impressed on his debut campaign in the top-flight.
After his side succumbed to relegation last season, the 20-year-old is destined to return to Serie A with a deal in the offing with Milan.
According to Brescia owner Massimo Cellino, Tonali’s mind was made up as soon as the Rossoneri showed interest.

That will mean diverging from Pirlo’s career path, as the Juventus boss initially joined Inter – an opportunity also available to Tonali.

Cellino told Top Calcio 24, via Goal: “I know that [Inter chief] Beppe Marotta really wanted Tonali, and that Antonio Conte appreciated him, so I think his agent had agreed terms with Inter.
“He was determined and convinced that he was going to Inter, but all this time dragged on and it was practically the start of the new season with still nothing happening.
“As soon as AC Milan showed real interest, he did not want to listen to any other options.
“I also have a historically good rapport with Milan and we reached an agreement with Paolo Maldini quite quickly.

“We also had interest from Barcelona and Manchester United, but the lad is in love with Milan and went crazy once he heard of their offer, because he supports them.”
Milan are back in the Europa League next season and have splashed a fair amount of cash on Tonali.
A £9million loan move is due to be completed in the coming days and Milan can sign the Italian permanently for a further £9m, with £13m agreed as add-ons.
Cellino confirmed the deal ahead of Tonali’s medical, but admitted bigger offers had arrived from elsewhere.
The Italian claimed: “Those figures are correct, but we turned down £58m from Barcelona in January and about a dozen days ago Manchester United had offered £9m more than Milan.”

Sokratis ‘doing everything he can to leave Arsenal’ as he desperately seeks Napoli transfer after falling out of favour

ARSENAL outcast Sokratis is doing everything he can to leave the club, according to reports.
The Greek defender is reportedly set to sign for Napoli in a £3.5million deal.

    1

Sokratis is ‘doing everything he can’ to leave Arsenal for Napoli
And he is desperate for the move to go through, according to Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport.
Sokratis is said to be keen to link up with his old friends – manager Gennaro Gattuso and defender Kostas Manolas.
The two parties are reportedly close to a agreeing a deal with Sokratis keen to be paid the same salary in Italy as he is in North London.
The 32-year-old has just one year left on his Emirates contract and has been identified by the Serie A side as Kalidou Koulibaly’s replacement.
Manchester City are believed to have agreed a deal with Napoli to sign Koulibaly.
And after missing out on Lille defender Gabriel Magalhaes to the Gunners, the Italians have turned to the Greek international.
SunSport reported reported last month how Sokratis was desperate for Arsenal to let him go.

He will join Napoli on a three-year deal and earn £2.2million-a-year.
He will be reunited with boss Gattuso at Stadio San Paolo after the duo played together at AC Milan during the 2010/11 season.

Mikel Arteta has been keen to offload the ex-Borussia Dortmund star with the player not in his plans going forward.
The former Werder Bremen ace failed to feature in the Premier League since the restart, with David Luiz, Shkodran Mustafi and Rob Holding preferred instead.
Sokratis featured just four times under Arteta in the top-flight last campaign after he took the reins in December.
