Jose Mourinho next club odds: Newcastle frontrunners after Roma sacking as pressure mounts on Howe, Saudi move in mix

JOSE MOURINHO is back on the managerial market after parting ways with Roma today. And the Special One is sure to have plenty of options on the table, with clubs and associations worldwide on alert.

The Italian side axed Mourinho – the sixth time he’s suffered this in his career – after a poor record in Serie A, where they currently sit ninth.
He’ll pick up another hefty pay-off, adding to the £50million+ from previous sackings as Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham.
Could one of those interested parties be Newcastle? The pressure from outwith the club has grown on manager Eddie Howe after a difficult couple of months in charge.
Newcastle were dumped out of Europe altogether at the start of December having finished bottom of their Champions League group and have won three times – including the Tyne-Wear derby cup win – and lost eight since the start of December.
Injuries have hampered the squad this season and their financial constraints have prevented Howe from doing the big business in January that the fans have craved.
But the majority of the support remain behind the manager as a result, with Mourinho as a replacement unlikely to please supporters greatly.

It’s a link that has been made for some time though and Newcastle sit as the 3/1 favourites with Sky Bet to be Mourinho’s next role.
It’s then 4/1 he head for the Saudi Pro League with any club there, with some managers including Steven Gerrard under pressure.
Taking over the Portugal national team is surely a job Mourinho has his eye on at some stage and they’re 5/1 – though it’s not likely they’ll move away from Roberto Martinez anytime soon.
A move to the MLS could attract the 60-year-old and that’s 6/1, ahead of former club Porto at 7/1 – the club where he enjoyed huge success.
A return to London on the cards? He’s 8/1 to replace Roy Hodgson at Crystal Palace, and it’s 12/1 he heads to either Benfica, Sporting or the England national side.

Inside Jose Mourinho’s Roma meltdown including calling himself Harry Potter, red card record – and what’s next for him?

ROMA have this morning sacked Jose Mourinho, bringing his chaotic two-and-a-half year tenure in the Eternal City to an end.Mourinho, 60, rocked up in Rome in May 2021, returning to Serie A following a decade away for the former Inter Milan boss.

The Portuguese had just been sacked by Tottenham following a miserable 18 months in North London.
He may have changed leagues by heading back to Italy, but the pattern of his tenure stayed very much the same at Roma right up to his sacking this morning.
After appointing Mourinho, club president Dan Friedkin proudly proclaimed: “The appointment of Jose is a huge step in building a long-term and consistent winning culture throughout the club.”
It appeared to be a bold claim at the time, given Mourinho’s tenures tending to combust by his third season, and at Spurs even sooner.

His first Serie A campaign was an underwhelming one as his side slumped to sixth – seven points off the top four.
The season was rescued somewhat by their European exploits, with Roma beating Leicester in the semis and Feyenoord in the final to win the Europa Conference League.
After the final, a visibly emotional Mourinho gushed: “Of course I feel like a Romanista, but that might be my way of working.
“I am a Porto fan, an Inter fan, a Chelsea fan, I am crazy about Real Madrid, I am now a Roma fan, I belong to all those clubs because we had these moments together.”

If the win was supposed to act as a launchpad for bigger and better things, it didn’t.
In the following campaign Roma finished sixth again… on exactly the same tally of 63 points that they managed the year before.
Jose’s behaviour began to get more erratic and he received three red cards for his touchline meltdowns.
Once again the success of the season hinged on a single match, as Roma took on Sevilla in the Europa League final.
Not securing Champions League football in either of Mourinho’s first two years in charge would have seemed unthinkable to Roma’s owners, so beating Sevilla was imperative.
So when he saw his side’s season go up in flames after losing on penalties to the LaLiga side, Mourinho threw another huge tantrum.
Following the match he could be seen hurling abuse at English referee Anthony Taylor in the car park, shouting: “You’re a f***ing disgrace, you’re a f***ing disgrace!”

Mourinho’s mood didn’t improve as he returned for his third season at the helm, with Roma largely limited to loans and free transfers amid potential Financial Fair Play issues.
He did manage to sign old pal Romelu Lukaku, with the Belgian having been prolific this term.
But the former Chelsea and Manchester United star’s goals haven’t been enough to sufficiently improve Roma.
Mourinho won just one of his final six Serie A games at the helm, leaving them languishing in ninth place.
And in this period he also saw his side dumped out of the Coppa Italia by Lazio.
Back in October he received a red card after telling Monza boss Raffaele Palladino: “You talk a lot and then you cry.”
It wasn’t even his first flashpoint against Monza, as last season he had “worn a wire” to try to escape sanctions.
He tore into Serie A whistler Daniele Chiffi at the time, blasting: “He is the worst referee I have met in my life. He is the worst. Technically he’s horrible. Zero empathy. Zero communication. Zero awareness.”

Mourinho received two red cards in just four days earlier this month as his Roma tenure unravelled, including in the Rome derby Coppa defeat to Lazio.
It took his tally of red cards in the last two seasons to six – more than any player in Serie A.
Referees weren’t the only victims of Mourinho’s angst this term.
Following a 2-1 win over Sassuolo earlier in the campaign, the Portuguese focused his ire on the Italian press.
He bizarrely refused to speak Italian after the match, despite being fluent, instead using an interpreter and responding in Portuguese.
A few weeks later he snubbed them altogether following his red card against Atalanta.
Mourinho has publicly dug his players out in the past, and Renato Sanches became the latest to receive that treatment.
The confused midfielder was taken off just 18 minutes after coming on during a 2-0 defeat to Bologna last month.

Mourinho’s final battle was with the Roma fans.
He had enjoyed an incredible reception from the Romanistas in 2021, and they long continued to back him despite stagnation in Serie A.
This season saw portions of the fanbase turn on him, particularly after going out of the cup to Lazio.
Following that defeat, Mourinho bizarrely compared to himself to the world’s most famous wizard.
He said: “The Roma fans are the most incredible I have seen. Their coach is Jose ‘Harry Potter’ Mourinho and he raises expectations.”
Mourinho’s Roma sacking is the sixth of his long career.
He was first axed by Chelsea in 2007, before heading to Inter Milan.
From Italy he headed to Real Madrid, who sacked him in 2013 just a year after penning a contract extension to 2016.
Mourinho was relieved of his duties for a second time by Chelsea in December 2015 following a disastrous start to the season.
Man Utd sacked the Portuguese in December 2018 following an awful start to the season amid a rumoured rift with many of his squad.
He barely lasted 18 months at Spurs, being sacked in April 2021 amid an awful run of form that saw them crash out of the Europa League and FA Cup in embarrassing circumstances while falling out of the top four.
Now that Mourinho has left Roma, fans will be interested to see where he ends up next.
A return to the Premier League could be on the cards but after his recent string of jobs, who would take him?
Naturally there have been some rumblings of Newcastle, with Eddie Howe having faced pressure this season.
While he will always have a connection with Chelsea, given his history at Stamford Bridge.
Perhaps more likely, however, is a lucrative trip to Saudi Arabia.
Back in November he even admitted to Rai1: “I think one day I will join Saudi Pro League. I think I will go and coach there, yes.”

If so, then Mourinho’s days at the top level would officially be over.

Roma are ninth in the table this campaign and have decided to part ways with Mourinho, who has been sacked for the sixth time in his career.
The Italian giants have agreed a deal to bring in club legend Daniele De Rossi as their new manager.
Roma released a statement confirming his departure which reads: “We would like to thank José on behalf of all of us at AS Roma for his passion and efforts since his arrival at the club.

Last season, Mourinho tore into Serie A referee Daniele Chiffi after claiming to have “worn a wire” in order to protect himself from sanctions.
The former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham boss said of Chiffi: “He is the worst referee I have met in my life.
“He is the worst. Technically he’s horrible. Zero empathy. Zero communication. Zero awareness.”
Earlier this month Mourinho was red carded during his side’s drab 1-1 draw with Atalanta.
Just last week, Mourinho was dismissed for the second match in a row after a violent and chaotic Rome derby in which his side lost 1-0 to Lazio.
It was his sixth red card across the last two seasons – more than any player in Serie A.
As his tenure began to unravel, the Italian media also found themselves in Mourinho’s firing line.
Following a 2-1 win over Sassuolo last month he refused to speak Italian after the match, despite being fluent.
Instead, he bizarrely only spoke Portuguese, with an interpreter translating for confused local reporters.
A few weeks later things spiralled even further, with Mourinho snubbing the media altogether after his red card against Atalanta.
Defeat to rivals Lazio knocked Roma out of the Coppa Italia, with a defiant Mourinho labelling himself Harry Potter because he raises fan expectations.
He said: “The Roma fans are the most incredible I have seen. Their coach is Jose ‘Harry Potter’ Mourinho and he raises expectations.
“I don’t know how many derbies I’ve played, 200, 150, they are always special matches. I’ve won, I’ve drawn, I’ve lost, always with a different experience.”
Mourinho may not be out of work for long having been targeted by Newcastle with Eddie Howe under pressure.
He was also rumoured to be a candidate for the Brazil job before they appointed Dorival Júnior.
He is believed to have earned £6.4million a year at Roma and has collected around £80m in severance from his sackings.

How unlikely Casanova Sven-Goran Eriksson won over England with Germany rout – as fans show support amid cancer fight

SVEN-GORAN Eriksson is much-loved by England fans – for one night in Munich in September 2001.The Swede, 75, has received messages of support by supporters all over the world after he revealed he has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

He told a radio station in his homeland that he has “at best a year” to live.
He revealed to P1: “Everyone understands that I have an illness that is not good.
“Everyone guesses it’s cancer and it is. But I have to fight as long as I can.”
When asked about the prognosis, Eriksson said he has “maybe at best a year, at worst a little less, or at best maybe even longer”.

The decorated ex-Three Lions gaffer added: “You can’t be absolutely sure. It is better not to think about it.
“But you can trick your brain. See the positive in things, don’t wallow in adversity, because this is the biggest adversity of course, but make something good out of it.”
Eriksson – or just Sven as England fans call him – has enjoyed some incredible achievements in the game.
After all, this was a man who beat Juventus and AC Milan to winning a Serie A title with unfashionable Lazio – only the second in their history – in 2000.
    Most read in Football
And despite his admitted failings with not getting the best out of the ‘Golden Generation’ of England footballers from 2001-2006, the 5-1 demolition of Germany at the Olympiastadion in Munich is immortal.
Sven also proved himself to be an unlikely Casanova, charming beauties Nancy Dell’Ollio, Ulrika Jonsson and Faria Alam.
    Legend in Italy
Sven arrived back in Italy in 1992 with Sampdoria, following a successful spell with Benfica who he led to a European Cup final.
He had previously scored success with Roma in the Coppa Italia in 1985, but a trophyless stint with Fiorentina meant he had unfinished business.
For the Genoa giants he won the Coppa Italia in 1994, ripping up the Italian defensive blueprint of man-marking by introducing a zonal marking system.
He left Sampdoria for Lazio in 1997, where he would become a legend.
A talented squad, that included future Ballon d’Or winner Pavel Nedved, Argies Juan Sebastian Veron, Nestor Sensini and Diego Simeone, as well as top scorer Marcelo Salas proved too much for their rivals in 2000.
They pipped Juventus to win Serie A by a point, also ousting the great AC Milan side of that era in the title race.
Knowing how to make a team difficult to beat was Sven’s strength and it played to the style of the league he coached in.

Lazio won the double that year – making it a trio of Coppa Italia wins for the studious manager.
He left in 2001 with his legacy in place, also adding the Cup Winners’ Cup and Super Cup to his CV.
    New challenge
That same year, Sven landed the England job to become the first foreigner to take charge of the national team.
The Scandinavian tactician had flirted with the idea of coaching in the UK – almost joining Blackburn Rovers in 1996, before opting to stay in Italy for family reasons.
But, the allure of working with England’s ‘Golden Generation’ of Beckham, Scholes, Lampard and more would prove to be too hard to turn down.
In truth, his cautious approach didn’t always work. Tournament failures – losing in the quarter-finals of two World Cups (2002 and 2006), and the Euros in 2004.
Least we not forget we lost to two very good sides in Brazil and Portugal (twice) in those games.
However, before those losses, we did have reason to cheer for one unforgettable night in Munich when it all came together.
The Three Lions travelled to Germany to face off against their bitter rivals, after a poor start to their 2002 World Cup qualification campaign in a crucial game.

Wins against lesser opposition didn’t exactly fill us with confidence.
But we took the Germans to the sword on their own soil. Spearheaded by Michael Owen who scored a hat-trick, and rounded off by Emile Heskey – it was an awesome display in a 5-1 win away from home.
It kickstarted Svenmania. Unbelievably in his homeland, the game was watched by over a million football fans – double the amount that tuned in to watch Sweden take on Macedonia that night.
Marks & Spencer, a longtime supporter of the England national team, printed 9,000 Germany 1 England 5 T-shirts, which sold out in a day.
“I can’t remember a menswear product selling so well,” a spokesman revealed at the time – a testament to Sven’s greatest day.
    Unlikely Casanova
Sven married Ann-Christine Pettersson in 1977, they had two children, before they divorced in 1994.
The cause of their split, he admitted, was an extramarital affair with curvy beauty Graziella Mancinelli.
It was a trait that followed Sven in his love life.
By 1998, he began a romance with glam lawyer Nancy Dell’Ollio who left her husband for the unlikely Casanova.

Again, he would stray – enjoying a brief tryst with Italian actress Debora Caprioglio.
Nancy forgave him, joining Sven in London at his £2million Regent’s Park.
His wandering eye led to more well-publicised affairs – with TV personality Ulrika Jonsson in 2002 and FA secretary Faria Alam in 2004.
Nancy stuck by Sven until 2006, when they finally called it quits.
“People said the constant media attention was something I had to accept, but I never understood what was so interesting about my private life,” he wrote in a column in the Daily Mail.
    Plenty of support
Former players have spoken in support of Sven after his shock cancer diagnosis.
Wayne Rooney took to X, formerly known as Twitter, and wrote: “Sad news this morning. Thoughts are with Sven Goran-Eriksson and his family.
“A brilliant coach and a special person. Loved and respected by everyone. We’re all with you Sven, keep fighting.”
Ex-player Trevor Sinclair posted: “Upsetting to read my old boss Sven Goran-Eriksson has terminal cancer!
“An absolute gentleman & excellent coach that I am eternally grateful to, as I earned all my England caps under him. I wish him love & comfort during his final battle.”
While fans have united to wish Sven the best.

One shared: “Really sad news about Sven Goran Eriksson, I hope he finds the strength to fight as long as he can, as someone who cared for my grandad with terminal cancer it is the cruelest disease. Wishing him & his family the best.”
A second added: “Cancer is just the most evil disease that take everything from not only the person suffering but everyone who loves them.

Maurizio Sarri’s side punched their ticket to the semi-finals thanks to Mattia Zaccagni’s winner in the 51st minute following a controversial VAR review that led to a penalty-kick.
Tensions then flared up with Lazio’s former Chelsea star Pedro being shown a second yellow card following a scuffle with old Roma team-mate Gianluca Mancini in the sixth minute of stoppage time.
The Giallorossi then lost Sardar Azmoun only four minutes later after a rough challenge on Nicolo Rovella.
Mancini became the final player to be shown a red card due to dissent, but that took place after the final whistle.

Referee Daniele Orsato had his hands full on the pitch but also had to deal with the benches.
And that led to yet another red card for Mourinho, who was fuming with VAR and the decision to award Lazio a spot-kick.
This comes after the ex-Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea boss was also sent off against Atalanta on Sunday.
That one was his fifth in Serie A in the past two seasons, more than any player.

Mourinho told Mediaset after the match: “It’s a modern football penalty, the sort that wouldn’t have been given before VAR.
“The referee didn’t give it when he was three metres away but with VAR he then gives it.”

Bove, 22, was hit in the head by a beer bottle while he was being substituted.
He appeared to be unharmed by the bottle as he threw it away afterwards.
Before the match, Lazio and former West Ham star Felipe Anderson spoke about the player’s feelings towards the fierce derby.
He told Lazio Style Radio: “The derby is always a match we have always been very passionate about, we knew there was this possibility of facing Roma in Coppa Italia.
“Every footballer likes to take part in it, it’s a match full of intensity and tension.
“We are used to playing it. It will be difficult. We should play with our hearts and try to win.”
The match itself was full of drama as Lazio won 1-0 thanks to a penalty awarded after a VAR check converted by Mattia Zaccagni.
In the closing stages, Lazio’s Pedro and Roma’s Sardar Azmoun were both sent off.
Azmoun was dismissed for appearing to hit Nicolò Rovella in the head.
Roma manager Jose Mourinho also saw red for the second time in two games.
The club’s rivalry spawned into the Derby della Capitale due to political division and fans’ wishes to represent the Italian capital.
