With Bale close to shock Tottenham return, which comebacks were a success and which were flops?

THEY say never go back… but don’t tell Gareth Bale.
The Real Madrid star is nearing a stunning loan deal to return to Tottenham after seven years away.

After a somewhat tepid time under Jose Mourinho, Spurs fans will be desperate for their former hero to bang in the goals like the good old days.
Bale notched 56 goals and 58 assists in over 200 appearances before his £85million exit in 2013.
But, with a dodgy injury record and a poor relationship with Zinedine Zidane leading to plenty of time spent on the sidelines, there will be plenty of doubters ahead of his return.
Here, SunSport details four comeback kids Bale can look to for inspiration – and three he dare not emulate.

    THIERRY HENRY

    8

Arguably no player has had as big an impact at one club during the Premier League era as Thierry Henry at Arsenal.
Few could blame the Frenchman for trying his luck with Barcelona after eight years in North London – especially as he went on to win the treble.
Eventually heading to North America, Henry found himself at a loose end in January 2012 and fancied a trip to see some old friends.

A two-month loan deal was sorted and he reminded Gooners why he was so adored with a winning goal on his debut, against Leeds in the FA Cup.
Henry played seven games during his second spell and left on a high, bagging a stoppage-time winner in his final appearance.
    MARIO GOTZE

    8

Injuries and a mystery illness got in the way of Mario Gotze’s Borussia Dortmund comebackCredit: Getty – Contributor
Mario Gotze, like most top German players, signed for Bayern Munich while at the peak of his powers.
The manner of the 2013 switch irked Borussia Dortmund but the player, who was briefly Germany’s all-time record transfer, actually struggled in Bavaria.
Three years later, he returned and admitted: “I can look at [the move] now through different eyes. I can easily understand that many fans could not understand my decision. I would not make that decision now.”
Far from the fairytale return, Gotze managed just 16 games for Borussia the following season.
Things barely improved and the World Cup winner was released this summer.
    DIDIER DROGBA

Returning legends can make as big an impact off the pitch as on it, as Didier Drogba showed.
The Ivorian was far from his prime when pitching up at Chelsea for a second spell in 2014.
Time in China and Turkey had drained more than a yard of pace from the striker, aged 36 as he rejoined.
Yet he embodied the Blues’ return to normalcy, coinciding with Mourinho’s second term as manager to bag a Premier League title.
A talisman around the entirety of the club, Drogba even helped out with vital goals against Spurs, Manchester United and Leicester en route to his fourth league crown.
    KAKA

    8

Brazilian playmaker Kaka’s decline was confirmed with a middling return to MilanCredit: AFP
If any player’s return was set up like Bale’s, it is the story of Kaka.
Departing AC Milan in 2009 as one of the world’s best players, the Brazilian became a classic Galactico signing for Real Madrid.
Like Bale, he had his moments in Spain but ultimately struggled to shake off injuries and titles were often evasive.
Upon departing Real, Kaka was compelled to relive his Milan glory days and signed a free transfer in 2013.
Tearing his hamstring in his first game, he bounced back to score a reasonable seven goals at the San Siro as the Rossoneri drifted to a disappointing eighth-placed finish.
    DIRK KUYT

Returning to your old team can often be a bit of an anticlimax… but not for Dirk Kuyt.
The underrated Dutchman headed back to Feyenoord in 2015 on the hunt for one last heroic moment to cap his career.
It finally arrived in his last game for the club, Kuyt bagging a final day hat-trick to seal Feyenoord’s first Eredivisie title in 18 years – which the captain lifted himself.
In fact, he isn’t the only Premier League favourite with a fantastic Feyenoord return under their belts.
Robin van Persie returned to Rotterdam for his final 18 months as a professional, scoring 25 times and lifting the KNVB Cup.
    JOE COLE

West Ham fans must be yearning for the sort of talents that used to pass through the club, before they were sold on.
Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard and Joe Cole all left for success elsewhere – but one did come back.
A home league debut equaliser against QPR provided hope of things to come but Cole was not the midfield maestro who had terrified defences for Chelsea in years gone by.
In an 18-month stay at Upton Park, Cole failed to establish himself in the team.
The Hammers beat relegation in 2013/14 after a strong second half of the campaign, although the ex-England ace rarely featured when they won.
    MARK HUGHES

British players heading abroad tend to produce mixed results, as Mark Hughes can attest.
Sparky’s trip to Spain was far less fruitful than Bale’s would prove to be, spending just a season with Barcelona before being loaned to Bayern Munich.

New Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson wanted the striker back in England and handed over £1.8m to sign him, £200,000 less than Barcelona had paid the Red Devils two years previous.
Hughes quickly became a staple as Fergie began to build his first imperious side.
Two Premier League titles and two FA Cups were among his achievements in a seven-year second spell, as well as a pair of PFA Player of the Year gongs.

Chelsea outcast Emerson Palmieri ‘wanted by West Ham and Inter Milan’ with full-back eyeing transfer exit

WEST HAM have joined Inter Milan in the race for Emerson Palmieri, according to reports.
The Italy international has played 55 times for Chelsea since a 2018 move from Roma – but was nowhere to be seen in Monday’s season opening win at Brighton.

Ben Chilwell’s arrival at Stamford Bridge has dropped Emerson back to being the third-choice left-back in Frank Lampard’s pecking order.
And The Independent report on West Ham and Inter carefully monitoring his situation.
Antonio Conte’s Inter have been linked with Emerson over a number of transfer windows.
Last month, reports in Italy suggested the player had already accepted personal terms to move back to Serie A.

However Inter focused their efforts on completing a deal for fellow full-back Aleksandar Kolarov.
The deal for the 34-year-old is not thought to have halted their interest in Emerson, 26.
Instead, they are reportedly keen to open talks over a loan switch with a permanent transfer costing in the region of £23million.
West Ham’s interest comes amid Chelsea’s own desires on Hammers star Declan Rice.

A possible players-plus-cash deal involving the pair has been touted but David Moyes is determined to hold on to the homegrown midfielder.
Bolstering the defence is understood to be key for the West Ham boss in the final month of the window, amid reports of rejected bids for Burnley’s James Tarkowski.
The club will be desperate to secure some incomings after the much-criticised sale of Grady Diangana to West Brom for an initial £13million.

Man Utd could land Sami Khedira on FREE transfer with Juventus ‘set to terminate his contract and not in Pirlo’s plans’

MANCHESTER UNITED could land Sami Khedira on a free transfer, according to reports.
The midfielder, 33, is set to have his contract terminated at Juventus a year early.

    1

According to Goal, he is not part of new boss Andrea Pirlo’s plans at the Allianz Stadium this season.
Khedira endured an injury-hit season last term with knee surgery in December and a torn abductor later on.
That limited him to just 18 appearances across all competitions.
Juventus are keen to cut costs across the club and the report adds they could save around £5.5million this season by terminating Khedira’s deal.

The Old Lady have brought in both Arthur from Barcelona and American star Weston McKennie to bolster the midfield.
And it means after five years with Juve, the German could be on his way out.
However, it remains unclear where the former Stuttgart and Real Madrid man will go next.
United have been linked in the past and did make a deadline-day attempt to land him during his Bernabeu days before Carlo Ancelotti convinced the German to stay.

But Khedira will be hoping Red Devils fans forgive him for his comments surrounding Bastian Schweinsteiger’s treatment at Old Trafford under former boss Jose Mourinho.
He said: “It’s a warning shot, definitely. I would never be in a situation where a club asks me to go.
“A player with a great career does not deserve that one eventually tells him, ‘Hey, get out!’
“I think the situation in Manchester is a shame because Bastian is a player who I have looked up to.
“Football is business. I am not a daydreamer. If Jose Mourinho has other plans, you have to accept that.”

Cristiano Ronaldo does NOT look happy as Juventus star wears £1,800 Louis Vuitton pyjamas while on his luxury yacht

CRISTIANO RONALDO was trolled for his sultry expression after modelling his Louis Vuitton pyjamas while on his luxury yacht.
The Juventus ace showed his fondness for flashy loungewear earlier this year after rocking a £2,000 silk set.

Yet it appears the 35-year-old was less than thrilled by his latest night-time purchase as he relaxed on his £5.5million yacht.
The shirt sells for £955, while the trousers will set you back £855.
Paddy Power tweeted: “Ronaldo looking like a man whose grandmother has insisted on taking a photo of him in the new pyjamas she’s just bought him for his birthday.”
And a fan said: “I swear my mum wears this when she sleeps.”

A third added: “Looks like United’s away kit.”

Yet Ronaldo is likely smiling on the inside after his latest yacht getaway just days before Juventus’ Serie A opener on Sunday.
The former Real Madrid star bagged 100 international goals last week when he scored twice in the Nations League win against Sweden.

The Portuguese also had a little yacht break a couple of weeks prior, when he was pictured frolicking in the Med with Georgina Rodriguez.
Snaps showed the superstar diving and tanning himself on a £30,000-a-week rented vessel.

Chelsea star Hudson-Odoi at centre of three-way transfer battle between Bayern Munich, Juventus and RB Leipzig

CHELSEA star Callum Hudson-Odoi is at the centre of a three-way transfer battle between some of Europe’s biggest clubs, reports say.
The 19-year-old hotshot has become of renewed interest to Bayern Munich following their failed pursuit of him last year.

    1

Hudson-Odoi’s first team opportunities may be limited this season after Chelsea’s depth of recruitment

But their Bundesliga rivals – and Italian giants Juventus – are also believed to be keen on the Blues winger.
Sky Germany reports that Bayern’s interest is back on, despite the world-class talent that would already be ahead of Hudson-Odoi, like Serge Gnabry and Champions League final scorer Kingsley Coman.
They are still on the hunt for a winger after failing to secure Inter Milan’s Ivan Perisic.
The Bundesliga champions would reportedly favour a loan move with an option to buy capture Hudson Odoi, but have yet to make an official approach.

The Champions League winners were close to gaining his signature 18 months ago after Hudson-Odoi’s Chelsea handed in a transfer request amid then-manager Maurizio Sarri’s reluctancy to play him.
But he did eventually put his name to a five-year contract 12 months ago after Lampard replaced the Italian in the dugout.
But with a raft of new attacking signings pushing the teenager further away from first-team football, speculation has now renewed.
Juventus are also interested and RB Leipzig have reportedly asked about the availability of the player – but the German club’s finances will likely stop them from making a move.

The English international’s new contract put him on £120,000 a week and even a loan agreement would be difficult for Julian Nagelsmann’s team, says the report.
The arrival of attacking talent Timo Werner and Kai Havertz – who both featured in Chelsea’s win last night – along with Hakim Ziyech has made Hudson-Odoi’s first team chances look doubtful.

The trio were signed for a combined cost of £150 million and will be likely jump ahead of the academy product, who has struggled for form after a long-term Achilles injury.
He made 22 appearances last season and managed one goal and five assists.
Lampard gave him a run out last night at Brighton but he unable to make an impact off the bench. More

Chelsea outcast Danny Drinkwater linked with shock transfer reunion with old boss Claudio Ranieri at Sampdoria

DANNY DRINKWATER could land a shock reunion with Claudio Ranieri at Sampdoria.
The midfielder’s career has fallen apart amid personal problems since joining Chelsea in 2017, a year after winning the Premier League under Ranieri at Leicester.

And Italy’s Il Secolo XIX newspaper suggest an intermediary has asked Sampdoria if they want to consider the three-cap ex-England ace, 30.
Meanwhile, Drinkwater has opened up on his incredible saga of the past two years, including headbutting a team-mate, being attacked in a club and drink-driving.
A sports psychologist is helping the Chelsea outcast as he battles back from playing just six times on loan for Burnley and Aston Villa last season.
And Drinkwater admits off-field “mistakes” have hampered his fortunes.

Someone said I tried to chat up some footballer’s girlfriend, but I got jumped and beaten up.
    Danny Drinkwater

When struggling at Villa and frustrated by his lack of match sharpness, he headbutted team-mate Jota in training.
Drinkwater told the Telegraph: “I apologised straight away and I had to go home.
“I texted him straight after to apologise and take full responsibility. I Google translated it into Spanish as well to make sure he’d understand.”
And while with Burnley he was assaulted in a club.

He said: “Someone said I had tried to chat up some footballer’s girlfriend, but that just wasn’t the case. I got jumped and beaten up.
“The timing was awful and the fact I twisted my ankle was the worst thing. It was just like: ‘Could this get any worse?'”
And of an April 2019 drink-driving ban, he added: “Obviously, my mental state wasn’t the best, but it was ridiculous and it should never have happened.”
Drinkwater insisted his huge pay packet has neither made up for nor caused his problems.

He said: “I know my Chelsea move hasn’t worked out how anybody would have wanted and I’ve made mistakes.
“But it’s not as simple as me just not playing football or picking up a wage.
‘Money doesn’t solve anything. The pay cheque doesn’t really help at all, you don’t even think about money.”

Inter Milan star Diego Godin set to join Cagliari on free transfer with three-year contract in works

DIEGO GODIN looks set to join Cagliari from Inter Milan, according to reports.
The Uruguay international only signed for Inter last summer and still has two years left to run on his deal at the San Siro.

    1

But CalcioMercato say the 34-year-old will sign a three-year deal at Cagliari, worth £2.3million per year plus bonuses.
With Inter looking to shift Godin’s large wages by moving him on, the agreement will also see them pay £1.4million of his wages for his first season in Sardinia.
French side Rennes were also interested in the ex-Atletico Madrid stalwart but he appears to have settled on a move to the Rossoblu.
Finishing touches on the deal are expected to be completed in the coming days.

Everton, Manchester United and Tottenham had all been linked with moves for Godin in recent months.
Despite playing every minute of the Nerazzurri’s end-of-season run to the final of the Europa League last month, Inter boss Antonio Conte does not see Godin as part of his plans for the new season.

The emergence of 21-year-old defender Alessandro Bastoni has lessened the need to keep an ageing Godin around.
Godin played just 23 times in Serie A last term but finished the season with 36 appearances in all competitions.

Cagliari also enquired about re-signing Radja Nainggolan after the former Belgium international spent last season on loan at the club but Inter have tentatively decided to keep the controversial midfielder around.

Luis Suarez faces Gareth Bale treatment at Barcelona and could spend a YEAR in the stands if he rejects transfer exit

LUIS Suarez faces the ‘Gareth Bale treatment’ at Barcelona and could face a year sidelined if he rejects an exit this summer, reports say.
The Uruguayan is not set to feature in new boss Ronald Koeman’s plans and the Dutchman is keen to get rid of him.

Sport newspaper reports on the growing tensions between Luis Suarez and Barcelona

    3

Gareth Bale has been left sidelined at Real Madrid

If not, Suarez situation could parallel that of wantaway Welshman Gareth Bale at Real Madrid.
The ex-Spurs attacker has been almost completely sidelined and limited to very few minutes under Zinedine Zidane in the last few seasons as the club struggles to flog their £350,000-a-week star.
According to Spanish outlet Sport, Suarez could be facing the same fate if his rumoured transfer to Juventus falls through.
The striker reportedly wants to be paid the final year of his contract but Barcelona are believed to be not willing to do this.

The Old Lady were reported to be close to bringing the ex-Liverpool hitman to Turin on a discounted two-year deal worth £6million a season.
The move looked certain with reports that Suarez would even have to take a language test before his move to Italy.
But the move has stalled amid rumours that Suarez fancies a switch to La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid instead, along with the impasse over his exit terms.
Tensions continue to rise between himself and the club as Luis Suarez reportedly grows unhappy with how he is being treated.

    3

Gareth Bale, frozen out at Madrid, has become known for his touchline antics
Part of his unease could be the abrupt one-minute phone call he had with his new gaffer last month, where he was told he could leave.
He is just one of a number players set to be axed as Koeman looks to overhaul the team following a humiliating conclusion to last season’s Champions League campaign.
The likes of Samuel Umtiti, Arturo Vidal and Martin Braithwaite are also being pushed towards the exit door.

Suarez has enjoyed six years at the club and has hit 198 goals, making him their third-highest scoring player ever.
This included his extraordinary 59 goal haul in the 2015-16 season.
Last season he managed 21 goals as Barcelona fell short in La Liga and lost out to rivals Real Madrid before their dramatic European rumbling.
