Roma to make Man Utd final offer for Chris Smalling after eight months of haggling over £18m transfer fee

ROMA are readying one last move for Manchester United centre-back Chris Smalling, according to reports.
The ex-England international was a hit last season on loan in the Italian capital.

But having been unable to come to an agreement that would have extended his stay even for the resumed Europa League last month, Roma are now refusing to match the Red Devils’ £18million valuation.
According to Corriere dello Sport, Roma’s final offer will be a £1.8m loan, with an obligation to buy for £12m and a further £900k in 2022.
Club chiefs are readying themselves to be turned down, however, especially after manager Paulo Fonseca angered United bosses by admitting that he was in regular contact with Smalling, 30.
The Roma boss said: “I am confident Chris will return to Rome.

“We are working on Smalling. I am always in contact with him, even yesterday I spoke with him, he wants to come back and we want to have him back.
“I think that in the next few days we could have him back here with us.”
Roma chiefs are now considering backup options, with Galatasaray defender Marcao, 24, and Torino star Armando Izzo, 28, on their wishlist.
Smalling, meanwhile, has been reporting for training at Carrington.

The United veteran, however, has been arriving earlier than his team-mates and training alone.
Should Roma fail with their final bid, Smalling could be offered another Old Trafford escape route.
SunSport exclusively revealed last week that Inter Milan are eyeing up the 31-cap star as a potential loan signing.

Tottenham open talks over Man Utd transfer target Milan Skriniar but Inter want £55m for centre-back

TOTTENHAM have opened talks with Inter Milan over defender Milan Skriniar, according to reports.
The Slovakian centre-back is a transfer target for Manchester United this summer.

But journalist Fabrizio Romano believes it is the North Londoners who are in negotiations.
However, the sticking point could be the price tag with Inter hoping to get as much as £55million for the 25-year-old.
Any suggestion Tanguy Ndombele may be used as part of a swap deal have been ruled out, though.

Spurs boss Jose Mourinho is keen to bolster his back-line this summer.
Jan Vertonghen left for Benfica at the end of last season leaving Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier and Juan Foyth as the main centre-backs.
And Skriniar fits the bill for the Special One.
He still has three years left to run on his current San Siro contract, meaning Inter do not need to sell the player they signed from Sampdoria in 2017.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer saw Skriniar as the perfect foil for Harry Maguire at the heart of United’s defence.

But it is reckoned PSG are also in the hunt after letting Thiago Silva leave on a free transfer for Chelsea.
Spurs, though, look to be in pole position as things stand with discussions underway.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes ‘working to bring £37m Douglas Costa to Wolves from Juventus’ in shock transfer

CRISTIANO RONALDO’S agent Jorge Mendes is working on a shock £37million transfer to bring Douglas Costa to Wolves, according to reports.
The Juventus winger, 30, has been linked with a move away from the Italian giants throughout the summer.

And according to Tuttosport, negotiations are underway between Mendes and the Molineux club.
The reported fee could be enough to land the Brazilian with Andrea Pirlo open to selling the former Bayern Munich star.
Portuguese Mendes has done plenty of business with Wolves over recent seasons to draw the likes of Joao Moutinho, Ruben Neves, Rui Patricio and record-signing Fabio Silva to the West Midlands.

And he could have another mega move up his sleeve if he can thrash out a deal.
Wolves may be keen to bring in a new winger after selling Diogo Jota to Liverpool in a £45m transfer.
Costa started just six Serie A games last season and was brought on as a late substitute in Pirlo’s first game – a 3-0 win over Sampdoria.
There was talk the Brazilian – who considered retiring following injuries – could be involved in a swap deal with Adama Traore but that looks to be off the table following Jota’s departure.

Costa has also been linked with Manchester United this summer after the Red Devils failed in their pursuit of Jadon Sancho.

The report adds that Juventus are already eyeing up a replacement wide man to come in.
Italian duo Federico Chiesa and Stephan El Shaarawy – at Fiorentina and Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua respectively – have both been mentioned.
Another name in the mix is Yannick Carrasco, although he re-signed for Atletico Madrid earlier in September.
Wolves are understood to be closing in on signing another Portuguese star with Nelson Semedo set to arrive from Barcelona after right-back Matt Doherty joined Tottenham.

Ibrahimovic forgets his own age and compares himself to Benjamin Button after 38-year-old scores two in AC Milan win

ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC compared himself to Benjamin Button after scoring twice for AC Milan, joking he is getting younger as the years go by.
But the Swedish icon did show his age… by forgetting how old he actually is.

Ibra, who turns 39 on October 3, got his AC Milan side off to the perfect start to the new Serie A season.
Ten years after scoring his first Rossoneri goal, he grabbed both in the 2-0 win over Bologna at the San Siro, meaning he has scored in a league goal in each of the last 23 seasons.
The first came ten minutes before half-time as Ibra nodded in Theo Hernandez’ cross before lashing a penalty right into the top corner after the break.
Zlatan tweeted a picture of himself from Monday’s victory and simply wrote: “Benjamin Button,” F Scott Fitzgerald’s fictional character who ages backwards.

He then said: “If I was 20 years old, I’d have scored another two.
“But I’m 39, no, 38… so I only got two.
“I don’t want people to talk about my age, I want to be treated the same as everyone else.
“It doesn’t matter if I am 38, I want to be treated like someone aged 20 and do the same work.”

And Ibrahimovic was not too far away from getting those other two as he proved why Milan handed him another contract this season.
At 0-0, he turned excellently in the box put slid his effort just wide and saw a later effort easily saved.

Ronaldo may turn 36 this season but is still in stunning physical condition.
It is a far cry from the skinny youngster who arrived at Manchester United in 2003 from Sporting Lisbon.
The incredible body transformation – arguably one of the most impressive in world football – is down to a Pilates-based routine that focuses on resistance work to strengthen his core.
He has also previously revealed the strict diet has kept him in sensational shape throughout his career.
The ex-Manchester United man enjoyed plenty of hours soaking up the sun during lockdown and brief off-season – and made the most of the chances to show off his abs.
But despite his pristine shape, Ronaldo will not play every game this season as Juventus boss Andrea Pirlo looks to manage his minutes.
Speaking on the subject to Sky Sports Italia, Pirlo said: “When it comes to less important games, we’ll try to give him a rest.
“He’s a very intelligent lad who knows his body very well, so he is aware of when it’s time to rest or to step it up.”

Morata has cost £190m in transfers and won 16 trophies in three leagues… so why is Juventus new boy considered a flop?

ALVARO MORATA is set for the fifth major move of a career that includes 16 trophies – so why is he considered a flop?
Spells at Chelsea, Real Madrid, Juventus and Atletico Madrid have all seen the Spanish striker display his best and worst assets.

    3

Now heading back to Turin on an initial loan deal, Morata is set to become one of football’s all-time most expensive players with total fees clocking £190million.
At first glance, the 27-year-old’s record is hugely impressive.

In over 400 career games, he has notched almost 150 goals in three different countries.

A pair of Champions League winners’ medals sit alongside his two Serie A crowns, two LaLiga titles, and, among others, an FA Cup.
And yet, he is rarely considered in lists of the world’s top strikers, has struggled to gain an affinity with fans around the continent, and has continually been allowed to leave ambitious clubs.
    JOURNEYMAN
Football fans lust for loyalty, understandably, and in turn find the player who constantly moves clubs to be something of a nomad.
Some top players earn a positive reputation in this regard, such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and 14-club sensation Christian Vieri.

Others, including Morata and Nicolas Anelka, see their reputations suffer as a result.
In heading to Juventus, the forward will complete his fourth move in just over four years.
With little long-lasting impact at either of his clubs, Morata is often relegated to the label of short-term fix.
As such, he struggled to acquire hero status at a number of his clubs.

I was very upset by the opinion of the people in England. I think they caught me in the middle of everything.
    Alvaro Morata

Initially popular in Real Madrid, he rejoined the Spanish giants as the only major signing in 2016 and fans were less than enthusiastic.
A year later, he left for Chelsea where, after scoring seven goals in his first eight games, things went sour.
Morata didn’t score a league goal between Boxing Day and April 1, embodying the Blues’ decline from champions to agitated also-rans labouring outside the top-four.
The atmosphere at Stamford Bridge became no less toxic when Maurizio Sarri took over in 2018 and Morata’s middling form saw him criticised further, before a loan move to Atletico.
Even in Spain, playing for his boyhood club, there were dissenters with a handful of ultras chanting, “Less Morata, more Borja Garces” ahead of his arrival.
Most at the Wanda Metropolitano did love the attacker, it must be said.
    ANTI-CLIMAX
Accusations that Morata struggles in big games have also been levelled, with both of his Champions League final wins coming via the bench.
He wasn’t trusted to start Atletico’s quarter-final exit in August having performed badly as they crashed out to Juve the year before.
This was less of an issue in Italy, where he notched vital Coppa Italia goals to seal two more winners’ medals, although his strike in the 2015 Champions League final could not prevent defeat to Barcelona.
And yet, Morata can hold up plenty of mitigating circumstances to explain his struggles.
Ousting Karim Benzema at Real Madrid has been an impossible job for several top-level attackers in the past decade.
Even as Real’s reserve striker, he notched 20 goals in his year back at the Bernabeu – en route to a league-and-Europe double.

Managing to better a one-in-three goal-per-game rate at Los Blancos, Chelsea and Atletico is also no mean feat for a player who largely relies on his work rate and physicality outside the box.
The problems he encountered in West London were also not all of his own making.
A nightmare back injury ruined his final 12 months at Chelsea and the discontent around the club had roots far beyond one striker’s form.
The slatings Morata regularly received were allowed to get on top of the player, and he admitted to Goal last year: “I had lost confidence in myself previously.

“I was very upset by the opinion of the people in England. I think they caught me in the middle of everything.”
As the game’s most cherished journeyman, Zlatan Ibrahimovic had only bagged eight trophies in two leagues by Morata’s age.
At only 27, there is plenty of time for Morata to earn the reputation his goal tally, trophy cabinet and transfer fees would suggest he deserves.

Fulham snap up Sassuolo centre-back Marlon Santos in £13.75m deal as Scott Parker looks to sort defensive problems

FULHAM have reportedly snapped up centre-back Marlon Santos from Italian club Sassuolo for £13m as Scott Parker looks to strengthen his side’s defence.
The deal will be finalised soon with part of the transfer fee to go to Barcelona, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Sassuolo director Giovanni Carnevali confirmed the negotiations and said: “We had an offer from Fulham, an important one, so we are evaluating it and the negotiations are in progress.
“We’ll see over the next few days if we can conclude them.”
Santos, 25, left Barca in 2018 to join Sassuolo for an inital fee of £5.5m, with the Serie A side to pay another £.5.5m when he had played 50 games.
The Brazilian likes to get stuck in the action and last season he averaged 1.7 tackles per game.

He’s also a good passer of the ball and last season he completed an average of 94.3 per cent of his passes, 60.9 passes per game, as well as 2.7 long balls.
This isn’t the first time Santos has been linked with a move to the prem, and both West Ham and Southampton were associated with his signature before he moved to Serie A two years ago.

But the Hammers were thought to be worried by the six-footer’s lack of physicality compared to more traditional Prem defenders.

He is seen by Parker as the answer to Fulham’s defensive woes as the newly-promoted club have already let in seven goals in just two Premier League matches.

Speaking on the goals his side have conceded Parker said: “You cannot give up goals that we have given up.
“You can’t expect to score four or five goals to win football matches in this league.”
Fulham have shown their desire to stay in the league by bringing in a total of seven new players this summer, including keeper Alphonse Areola from PSG.

Inter Milan sign Arturo Vidal in tiny £900,000 transfer from Barcelona as ex-Juventus star returns to Serie A

INTER MILAN have completed the signing of Arturo Vidal from Barcelona for just £900,000.
The Chilean reunites with manager Antonio Conte, who he previously worked with at Juventus between 2011 and 2014.

Vidal, 33, will look to add to his amazing tally of 11 league titles in four different countries.
The combative midfielder left Juventus a year after Conte, spending three years at Bayern Munich before arriving at Camp Nou in 2018.
He made 96 appearances for Barcelona, scoring 11 times and making ten assists.

Vidal took to social media to thank Barca for “two wonderful years”, while the club itself placed on record its thanks for his “commitment and dedication”.
And stars Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez also paid tribute to their departing fellow South American.
The former wrote: “I only knew you from facing up against each other and you always seemed a phenomenon, but after I was lucky enough to get to know you personally and you surprised me even more.
“They were two years sharing a lot and you made yourself noticed a lot. The dressing room will miss you, Arturo.”

While Suarez, who himself appears set for Atletico Madrid, added: “To have you as an opponent was unbearable because of how great you are as a player, but to have you as a team-mate, friend and to know you as a person, you are even greater!”

Vidal’s final appearance for Barcelona came in the 8-2 drubbing against Bayern Munich, and he immediately did not feature in new manager Ronald Koeman’s plans.
He has been let go for under £1m because of Barcelona’s sheer desperation to offload high-earners in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic – while also only having nine months remaining on his contract.
