With Gareth Bale struggling on his Tottenham return, which comebacks were a success and which were flops?

THEY say never go back… and that may be how Gareth Bale is feeling right now.
The Real Madrid star returned to Tottenham after seven years away at the beginning of the season in a loan deal, but has so far failed to impress boss Jose Mourinho.

The Special One even threatened to send the Welsh legend back to the Spanish giants, after a disappointing showing in training.
In his Spurs hey-day, Bale notched 56 goals and 58 assists in over 200 appearances before his £85million exit in 2013.
But, with a dodgy injury record and a poor relationship with Zinedine Zidane leading to plenty of time spent on the sidelines in Spain, there were already plenty of doubts when he returned.
Here, SunSport details four comeback kids Bale can look to for inspiration to turn things around – and three he dare not emulate.

    THIERRY HENRY

Arguably no player has had as big an impact at one club during the Premier League era as Thierry Henry at Arsenal.
Few could blame the Frenchman for trying his luck with Barcelona after eight years in North London – especially as he went on to win the treble.
Eventually heading to North America, Henry found himself at a loose end in January 2012 and fancied a trip to see some old friends.
A two-month loan deal was sorted and he reminded Gooners why he was so adored with a winning goal on his debut, against Leeds in the FA Cup.

Henry played seven games during his second spell and left on a high, bagging a stoppage-time winner in his final appearance.
    MARIO GOTZE

Injuries and a mystery illness got in the way of Mario Gotze’s Borussia Dortmund comebackCredit: Getty – Contributor
Mario Gotze, like most top German players, signed for Bayern Munich while at the peak of his powers.
The manner of the 2013 switch irked Borussia Dortmund but the player, who was briefly Germany’s all-time record transfer, actually struggled in Bavaria.
Three years later, he returned and admitted: “I can look at [the move] now through different eyes. I can easily understand that many fans could not understand my decision. I would not make that decision now.”
Far from the fairytale return, Gotze managed just 16 games for Borussia the following season.
Things barely improved and the World Cup winner was released this summer.
    DIDIER DROGBA

Didier Drogba popped back to Stamford Bridge for a fourth Premier League medal in 2014/15Credit: EPA
Returning legends can make as big an impact off the pitch as on it, as Didier Drogba showed.
The Ivorian was far from his prime when pitching up at Chelsea for a second spell in 2014.
Time in China and Turkey had drained more than a yard of pace from the striker, aged 36 as he rejoined.
Yet he embodied the Blues’ return to normalcy, coinciding with Mourinho’s second term as manager to bag a Premier League title.
A talisman around the entirety of the club, Drogba even helped out with vital goals against Spurs, Manchester United and Leicester en route to his fourth league crown.
    KAKA

Brazilian playmaker Kaka’s decline was confirmed with a middling return to MilanCredit: AFP
If any player’s return was set up like Bale’s, it is the story of Kaka.
Departing AC Milan in 2009 as one of the world’s best players, the Brazilian became a classic Galactico signing for Real Madrid.
Like Bale, he had his moments in Spain but ultimately struggled to shake off injuries and titles were often evasive.
Upon departing Real, Kaka was compelled to relive his Milan glory days and signed a free transfer in 2013.
Tearing his hamstring in his first game, he bounced back to score a reasonable seven goals at the San Siro as the Rossoneri drifted to a disappointing eighth-placed finish.
    DIRK KUYT

Dirk Kuyt scored a famous hat-trick as he waved goodbye to FeyenoordCredit: Rex Features
Returning to your old team can often be a bit of an anticlimax… but not for Dirk Kuyt.
The underrated Dutchman headed back to Feyenoord in 2015 on the hunt for one last heroic moment to cap his career.
It finally arrived in his last game for the club, Kuyt bagging a final day hat-trick to seal Feyenoord’s first Eredivisie title in 18 years – which the captain lifted himself.
In fact, he isn’t the only Premier League favourite with a fantastic Feyenoord return under their belts.
Robin van Persie returned to Rotterdam for his final 18 months as a professional, scoring 25 times and lifting the KNVB Cup.
    JOE COLE

Joe Cole could not recover his best form after almost a decade away from West HamCredit: Times Newspapers Ltd
West Ham fans must be yearning for the sort of talents that used to pass through the club, before they were sold on.
Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard and Joe Cole all left for success elsewhere – but one did come back.
A home league debut equaliser against QPR provided hope of things to come but Cole was not the midfield maestro who had terrified defences for Chelsea in years gone by.
In an 18-month stay at Upton Park, Cole failed to establish himself in the team.
The Hammers beat relegation in 2013/14 after a strong second half of the campaign, although the ex-England ace rarely featured when they won.
    MARK HUGHES

Mark Hughes (left) was a vital component of Sir Alex Ferguson’s early success at Old TraffordCredit: Getty – Contributor
British players heading abroad tend to produce mixed results, as Mark Hughes can attest.
Sparky’s trip to Spain was far less fruitful than Bale’s would prove to be, spending just a season with Barcelona before being loaned to Bayern Munich.

New Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson wanted the striker back in England and handed over £1.8m to sign him, £200,000 less than Barcelona had paid the Red Devils two years previous.
Hughes quickly became a staple as Fergie began to build his first imperious side.
Two Premier League titles and two FA Cups were among his achievements in a seven-year second spell, as well as a pair of PFA Player of the Year gongs. More

Italian authorities have placed a ban on travelling between regions with the Juventus star and his partner leaving Turin for a stay in Valle d’Aosta.
The ski resort is approximately two hours from Turin by car.
On Tuesday evening, Rodriguez celebrated her 27th birthday with Ronaldo in the five-star Le Massif hotel.
The couple had dinner together and reportedly spent the night before a snowmobile ride around the Alpine sights of Val Veny.

Their trip was documented on social media with snaps of the wintery retreat reaching their millions of fans.
That afternoon, they returned to Turin ahead of Juventus’ Coppa Italia win over SPAL.
Ronaldo was left out of the game by manager Andrea Pirlo to allow a short period of rest.

According to La Stampa, police visited the hotel on Thursday and found it shut.

Several businesses in the holiday destination have decided to close due to the lack of visitors during the coronavirus pandemic.
It is said that Italian authorities will NOT be able to punish Ronaldo or Rodriguez with the 400 euro fine for unauthorised movement.
Fines must be handed out on the spot, at the moment of the breach after police questioning on why they were in the area.
The star forward could also claim to have travelled legally, with a number of necessary activities allowed by law.
Italian Covid rules state: “Travel across regions in Italy is banned until 15 February unless for reasons of work, health or absolute necessity.”

Furthermore, the hotel is legally not allowed to demand the reasons behind Ronaldo’s stay.
BeIN Sports correspondent Tancredi Palmeri has also reported that police are investigating the matter.
Rumours persist that the couple are engaged, despite yet publicly announcing plans to tie the knot.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic ‘faces TEN-GAME ban if found guilty of racially abusing Romelu Lukaku’ after ‘voodoo’ taunt

AC MILAN star Zlatan Ibrahimovic could face a TEN-GAME ban if found guilty of using racist language towards Romelu Lukaku.
The pair got into a heated exchange during Tuesday’s Milan derby in the Coppa Italia.

Having been separated by team-mates after going head to head, it is claimed that Ibrahimovic, 39, said: “Go do your voodoo s***, you little donkey. Call your mother.”
To which Lukaku, 27, is believed to have replied: “He wants to talk about mothers? Son of a b****.
“F* you and your wife, you little b**.”
Both players were handed one-game Coppa suspensions after the match, for reasons not to do with the bust up.

Ibrahimovic collected two yellow cards after putting his side in front, while Lukaku, who equalised from the penalty spot, picked up a yellow card that triggered suspension.
According to La Stampa, however, if Zlatan’s insult is deemed to be racist, he could face a ban of up to ten games.
The Swede and his club are likely to insist that the comment was a reference to a claim made by Everton owner Farhad Moshiri, rather than a racial stereotype.
After Lukaku had left Goodison Park to join Manchester United, Moshiri 65, claimed that a previous contract negotiation had collapsed because of a voodoo priest’s influence.

He said in January 2018: “During the meeting [Lukaku] said he had to call his mother, who was on a pilgrimage in Africa and had seen a voodoo or something who said he had to go to Chelsea.”
Ibrahimovic has also taken to social media to deny allegations.
He wrote: “In ZLATAN’s world there is no place for RACISM.
“We are all the same race – we are all equal !! We are all PLAYERS some better then others [sic].”
During the pair’s stint as team-mates at Old Trafford, Ibrahimovic reportedly mocked the Belgian’s control, offering the ex-Chelsea man a £50 bet for every good first touch he made, such was his ‘poor’ technique.
Inter went on to have the last laugh against their ten-man rivals, with Christian Eriksen curling home a sensational free-kick deep into stoppage time to send Antonio Conte’s side to the semi-finals.

Arsenal transfer blow with Juventus set to open Houssem Aouar talks with Lyon over summer switch for midfielder

ARSENAL have received a transfer blow with Juventus reportedly set to open talks with Lyon about Houssem Aouar.
The Gunners have been heavily linked with the midfielder but look set to be pipped by the Italian giants who want him to move in the summer.

Mikel Arteta was said to be keen on bringing the Frenchman in this month.
He also caught the eye of Paris Saint-Germain and was valued around £45million.
Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas was adamant Aouar would not be sold in January.
And that suits Juve who want to agree a deal to bring him to Turin in the summer, according to Sky Italia.

The Old Lady reportedly tried to sign the 22-year-old last summer and remain keen.
And they are said to have held provisional talks with the player’s agent before an official approach is made.
Arsenal also tried to sign the French international last summer.
The North Londoners negotiated long and hard to try to get a discounted deal for the man who has three goals and three assists from 16 games this season.

CASINO DEALS: BEST SIGN UP OFFERS TO CLAIM OVER £700

But eventually they were forced to trigger Thomas Partey’s £45m release fee with Lyon not willing to let their star man go cheaply.
And in November, Lyon general manager Vincent Ponsont revealed THREE clubs were chasing Aouar in the summer.
He claimed Arsenal offered too little, even though they were willing to give them a ‘discount’ due to the financial repercussions of coronavirus.
Ponsont told L’Equipe: “We had three big clubs for him. The first one was more for next season.
“The second one was related to the departure of a player, and with this club, we could have come to an agreement.
“The third club was Arsenal, who offered below the market value.
“We discussed it with the player’s entourage, and together we took the decision to say no.
“The priority for us was clearly to keep the team competitive.”

Romelu Lukaku ‘told Zlatan Ibrahimovic f*** you and your wife’ in explosive Inter and AC Milan derby clash

ROMELU LUKAKU reportedly told Zlatan Ibrahimovic ‘f*** you and your wife’ in their explosive Milan derby bust-up.
The two strikers – who were team-mates at Manchester United – came head to head in a fiery clash on Tuesday night after Lukaku was fouled by Alessio Romagnoli on the stroke of half-time.

Romelu Lukaku reportedly told Zlatan Ibrahimovic ‘f*** you and your wife’ during their angry spatCredit: Getty Images – Getty

AC Milan striker Ibrahimovic, 39, allegedly shouted: “Go do your voodoo s***, go do your voodoo s***, little donkey,” at the Belgian star.
Lukaku appeared to suggest Ibra had said something about his mother, too, and according to the Mail, the Inter Milan striker fired back, saying: “‘F*** you and your wife, you little b****. You want to speak about my mother?”
The ex-Chelsea and Everton man then charged at the Swede and blasted: “Let’s go inside you b****,” before both players were booked.
Inter staff and players had to restrain Lukaku as the teams made for the tunnel at half-time.

It is believed that Ibrahimovic’s ‘voodoo’ remark was referring to Everton owner Farhad Moshiri’s claim in January 2018 that Lukaku left the Toffees after a witch doctor advised him to join Chelsea.
Lukaku, 27, has since denied those accusations and threatened to sue Moshiri for them.
Zlatan, who had fired his side in front on 31 minutes, picked up a second yellow card just before the hour mark, changing the game.
Lukaku fired in a penalty off the underside of the bar to equalise against the ten men of AC.

And Christian Eriksen – linked with a move away from the San Siro this month – curled home a perfect free-kick in the seventh minute of injury time to seal Inter’s spot in the Coppa Italia semi-finals.
But the angry exchange between Ibrahimovic and Lukaku dominated the headlines.
The pair seemingly got on well during their eight months together at Old Trafford in the 2017-18 season and had a ‘very strong’ partnership.
Zlatan told Sky Sports in 2017: “Lukaku is in the team, scoring a lot of goals – he’s making the job easier for me. Lukaku is only positive. He makes my comeback less pressured.
“He’s scoring his goals and doing what he needs to do, and I’m happy for that. We will see how things go, but I see it [the partnership] very strong.”
Lukaku echoed their positive vibes in an interview in 2019, saying: “Everything I learned from Zlatan was great, from his stories that he told me to being on the field working with him, seeing how competitive he was.
“I learned just to focus, work hard and enjoy it as well. Because he is a guy who you can have a lot fun with as well and having his personality in the dressing room was good.”
Speaking last night, Milan manager Stefano Pioli berated his veteran striker for the red card.

He said: “The confrontation certainly influenced the match, the first booking caused the sending off.
“They’re big enough and ugly enough, I don’t know what they said to each other, it can happen, we need to move past it and think of the next match.”
Inter boss Antonio Conte, however, hailed his man for the way he dealt with the incident.
He added: “I’ve been a player, so I know that during a game tempers can flare and situations occur when you get angry.
“It was good to see Romelu so concentrated and focused. Ibra has the determination of a winner, a warrior, and I think Romelu is growing in that aspect. I can only be happy to see him fired up.”
