Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos among world-class XI of stars out of contract in 2021 who are available on free transfer

LIONEL MESSI and Sergio Ramos head the list of world-class names who are now into the final six months of their current contracts.
And that means we could see some incredible free transfers at the end of the season.

These players are all out of contract come the end of the season so will be available for free

Lionel Messi made a dramatic U-turn to see out the final year of his Barcelona contractCredit: AFP or licensors

Messi threatened to quit Barcelona this summer but decided to honour his deal while Ramos is holding out for more than a one-year extension at Real Madrid.
But with the likes of Mesut Ozil, Memphis Depay and Sergio Aguero also running down their deals, plenty of clubs will be eyeing up some smart business.
From January, players whose contracts are expiring will be able to start negotiating with new clubs over free summer moves.
And could there even be a surprise return to the Premier League in store for Diego Costa after his release from Atletico Madrid?

SunSport picks out some of the best players available for nothing next summer.
    GK – Gianluigi Donnarumma
The AC Milan stopper burst on to the scene as a teenager and is still backed to be Italy’s No1 for many years.
But with just months to go on his current deal, could he be holding out for one of the European superpowers to come calling?
    RB – Eric Garcia
OK, yes, his favoured position is at centre-back but for this team he is going to have to move across.

The Manchester City star revealed he will not be signing a contract extension at the Etihad and is expected to rejoin Barcelona after a summer move fell through.
    CB – Sergio Ramos
Ramos takes the first centre-back spot as one of the greatest in that position over the last decade.
Captain now Iker Casillas has gone, penalty taker now Cristiano Ronaldo has gone, the Real Madrid icon may no longer be at his peak aged 34 but is still a fine defender.
Zinedine Zidane insists he will stay but Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, Inter Miami or even a reunion with Jose Mourinho at Spurs may all be tempting destinations.
    CB – Jerome Boateng
On paper, Boateng has enjoyed a stellar career with an FA Cup, eight Bundesligas, two Champions Leagues and the World Cup.
But even then the German still leaves some unconvinced he is in the top bracket – however, you could do worse for a free agent and that is why Chelsea and Arsenal are linked.

Sergio Ramos continues to lead by example for Real Madrid with the armband and spot-kick responsibilitiesCredit: Getty Images – Getty

The percentage of answers have been round up or down from their decimal points
    LB – David Alaba
Alaba, meanwhile, has proven his quality time and time again – and in many different positions.
The Bayern Munich star excelled at left-back for years but has since moved into midfield and centre-back, making it look easy – no wonder the giants are battling it out for his signature.
    CM – Luka Modric
A serial winner for Real Madrid, ended the Ballon d’Or duopoly and took Croatia to the World Cup final.
But it looks as though Modric’s nine years at the Bernabeu will come to an end following the emergence of Fede Valverde and others.
    CM – Georginio Wijnaldum
A critical part of the Liverpool engine room which delivered European and then league success.
Ronald Koeman taking over at Barcelona and Thiago’s arrival at Anfield led to speculation of a departure this summer – give it to the end of the season and he could well be lining up at the Nou Camp with no new contract signed.
    CM – Mesut Ozil
Arsenal will be counting down the days until they can stop paying Ozil £350,000 per week, or £50,000 a day, or £2,083 an hour, or £34.72 per minute.
The German signed his lucrative new deal in January 2018 and has done very little for the club since – and absolutely nothing after the lockdown restart, except offer to pay for Gunnersaurus’ wages.
Turkey or the MLS both seem like possible destinations.

Luka Modric became the first player other than Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi to win the Ballon d’Or since Kaka in 2007Credit: AP:Associated Press

    RW – Lionel Messi
We almost witnessed one of the most spectacular of all transfers this summer when Messi was ready to walk out on Barcelona after nearly 20 years.
His loyalty to the Catalan giants saw him perform a U-turn so he didn’t take them to court and instead would honour the final year.
But it would take a remarkable shake-up for the Argentine to sign a new deal as Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain plot mammoth offers.
Messi recently said: “I know there are a lot of people at Barca who still love me, but I’m going to do what is best for the club and for myself.
“I don’t know if I’m going to leave, but if I do, I would like to leave in the best way possible and be able to return to the club in the future.”

    ST – Sergio Aguero
Aguero is the greatest foreign goalscorer the Premier League has seen, breaking records galore and bagging more than 250 times for City since his arrival in 2011.
But this season may well be his last if there is no agreement made for the 32-year-old to stay on beyond the summer – and he would not be short of options.
    LW – Memphis Depay
Remembered by many for his failed spell at Manchester United, Depay reset with Lyon and has proven he is still a top-class talent.
Like compatriot Wijnaldum, he was close to joining Barcelona in the last window but a deal could not get over the line in time – another impressive campaign in Ligue 1 will ensure the biggest clubs keep an eye out.
    Alternative XI
Unsurprisingly, there are still a fair few names not getting into that star-studded XI.
So here is the Alternative XI – and it is pretty strong with experienced internationals, Premier League kings and a World Cup winner.

Another whole team of out-of-contract talented players could make up a second-string XI
    GK – Marko Dmitrovic
The Eibar stopper is one of a number from LaLiga out of contract at the end of the current campaign – alongside Rui Silva from Granada and Sevilla’s Tomas Vaclik – with Atletico Madrid potentially eyeing Dmitrovic.
    CB – Romain Saiss
The versatile Morocco captain has played more than 150 times – across the defence and midfield – for Wolves since his 2016 arrival and has the option of an extra 12 months at Molineux.
    CB – Jonny Evans
At £3m, Leicester bagged a great deal when they landed the former Manchester United defender, who played in every league game for the Foxes in 2019-20 – don’t rule out a new deal getting signed.
    CB – Shkodran Mustafi
Mustafi’s Arsenal career looked all over before Mikel Arteta’s arrival and a strong end to the season.
But will he be needed next season with William Saliba, Gabriel, Pablo Mari, Rob Holding, Calum Chambers AND Konstantinos Mavropanos?
Talks did take place with Barcelona over a ludicrous signing but surely even that would be a step too far on the list of bonkers Nou Camp transfers.

Manchester clubs have the worst net spend in the past decade by some distance
    RM – Florian Thauvin
The French wide man did not enjoy his best football during a spell at Newcastle but, back at Marseille he was enjoying his football until a cruel ligament injury which ruled him out for almost the entire 2019-20 season.
    CM – Riqui Puig
Another graduate of the famous La Masia academy at Barcelona, Puig looked destined to follow the footsteps of Andres Iniesta and Xavi – but it has not quite worked out for him just yet, especially under Koeman, and he could be let go with Arsenal or Leeds keen.
    CM – Julian Draxler
The German midfielder’s Paris Saint-Germain career never really took off as many expected following his 2017 arrival from Wolfsburg but aged 27 he will be confident of further success.
    LM – Danny Rose
England’s No1 left-back for many years saw his career spiral downwards when Jose Mourinho arrived at Spurs and he needs to find a new club while he can still do a job.
The 30-year-old walks into a fair number of Premier League sides – rather than just the Spurs U23s he has turned out for this term.

Jonny Evans and Andros Townsend will both be hoping to sign new deals before the season endsCredit: PA:Press Association

Danny Rose needs to leave Tottenham to get his career back on trackCredit: Getty Images – Getty
    CAM – Angel Di Maria
Not many players can boast a CV of clubs like Di Maria.
But now well into his 30s, he will do well to earn another contract at Paris Saint-Germain and will need to be playing to get back into the Argentina fold ahead of the 2022 World Cup.
    ST – Arkadiusz Milik
He may have already racked up more than 50 Poland appearances but it appears Spurs-target Milik is unwanted at Napoli. Turning 27 in February, he still has plenty to offer.
    ST – Diego Costa
And last but by no means least is Costa. The fiery front man banged in 59 goals in 120 Chelsea appearances before returning to Atletico Madrid in 2017 – before ripping up his contract to leave for nothing.
Goal-shy Arsenal and Wolves, who are without Raul Jimenez, are among the early favourites to land the Spaniard.

Man Utd flop Memphis Depay at centre of transfer battle between Barcelona and Juventus as Serie A giants join race

JUVENTUS have joined Barcelona in the race for former Manchester United winger Memphis Depay, according to reports.
The Lyon ace was heavily linked with a move to the Nou Camp at the end of last season.

Juventus will go head-to-head with Barcelona for Lyon ace Memphis DepayCredit: Reuters

But the Catalans will face stiff competition for the Dutchman in January with the Serie A giants also keen, according to Turin newspaper La Stampa.
Juve are also said to be considering including forward Federico Bernardeschi, 26, as part of a swap deal.
The Italians are said to be on the lookout for cheaper deals as they try to manage the financial impact of Covid-19 during the January window.
Depay is in the final year of his contract and could be available for just £4.5million when the transfer window opens next month.

He was a top target for Barcelona gaffer Ronald Koeman last summer but the cash-strapped club could not meet Lyon’s demands.
The Dutchman’s electric form – eight goals in 17 appearances this season – and new bargain price tag has alerted Juventus.
Andrea Pirlo fancies a fourth attacking option to challenge Cristiano Ronaldo, Paulo Dybala and Alvaro Morata, according to Sport Diario,
Danger man Depay recently dismissed talk of a mid-season switch to Barcelona.

Juve could also include Federico Bernardeschi as part of a swap dealCredit: Getty Images – Getty

Earlier this month, he said: “We have a great team, a great collective spirit and, while I don’t know what will happen later, I’m 100 per cent focused on Lyon right now.
“I’m a player, a captain and the most important thing is working hard and winning matches. If I think about my own future, then I could lose focus.
“I can’t say anything about that [Barcelona interest], there are many clubs that are interested but right now I’m here.”
Depay has rebuilt his reputation at Lyon after a disappointing 18-month spell at Old Trafford in which he could only manage two goals in 33 Premier League appearances.
He is one of eight transfers Barca are looking to sort in Janaury.

A statement read: “Robert Lewandowski was named Player of the Year 2020 at last night’s Dubai Globe Soccer Awards, thanks to a combination of votes from fans all over the world and votes from the Dubai Globe Soccer Jury.
“Lewandowski has had an exceptional season, being a top scorer of the Champions League, Bundesliga and German Cup and stacking up victories for his club, Bayern Munich.”
But Ronaldo did pip long-time rival Lionel Messi, 33, and Barcelona legend Ronaldinho as the Player of the Century.
After winning the award, he said: “For 20 consecutive years I have played and scored as a professional, I didn’t know there was another record to beat.
“It’s a pleasure to hear about the records, I have achieved all this but without my team-mates, without a great team, I would not have achieved these records.”

Ronaldo, who wants to play at the highest level until he is 40, revealed he has no plans of slowing down.
He said: “It is an exceptional achievement. It gives me the motivation to move forward.
“To be named the best is a great honour, I hope that this situation is over next year and that we can have more fun, thank you very much.
“I hope to still be able to play for more years. ”

Capello says he would only swap Paulo Dybala for Harry Kane as he blames coronavirus for Juventus star’s poor form

FORMER England boss Fabio Capello says the only player he’d trade Paulo Dybala for is Harry Kane.
Capello has come to Dybala’s defence following criticism of the Juventus star this season.

Capello has blamed coronavirus for Dybala’s poor form this seasonCredit: Getty Images – Getty

The Argentina forward, 27, has just one goal in eight games under Andrea Pirlo and is yet to bag an assist.
Dybala’s poor form appears to be hurting Serie A champions Juve, who are sixth in the table after winning just six of their opening 13 matches.
And after catching coronavirus earlier this year, reports suggest Dybala could be on his way out.
Manchester United have been linked with a stunning swap deal including Paul Pogba.

And Paris Saint-Germain are also thought to be keen as they prepare to make Mauricio Pochettino their new boss.
Juventus’ fierce rivals Napoli have even been tipped to make an audacious approach for Dybala,
But the Turin giants are thought to be preparing a new contract offer for their talisman, who is in his sixth season with the club after joining for £36million fro Palermo in 2015.
Indeed, former Juventus boss Capello reckons Dybala is one of the best in the business.

And the tactician insists the only player he’d swap Dybala for is Tottenham ace Kane, who has nine goals and ten assists in just 15 games.
Capello told Gazzetta: “I said I wouldn’t swap Dybala to get Pogba. If I could, I’d trade him with Tottenham’s English striker Harry Kane.
“[Poor form?] Covid is the explanation, especially for a player like Dybala, who needs to dribble [past] a man.
“The impression is that he’s a bit unfinished. He captivates but leaves doubts. He certainly has superior qualities, he really has all you need.
“He needs the physical conditions to return to his best. Paulo needs to be 100 per cent well, because if you are well physically, the head leads you to face the opponents, the team-mates, the coach and even the club.
“Dybala can do everything on the pitch if he is well, even playing in a trident with Alvaro Morata and Cristiano Ronaldo.”

Paulo Dybala urged to quit Juventus for bitter rivals Napoli by former Palermo chief as he talks up ‘passionate’ fans

PAULO DYBALA has been urged to make a controversial switch from Juventus to Napoli.
Dybala, who tested positive for Covid-19 earlier in the year, has been a fringe figure under Andrea Pirlo.

Paulo Dybala’s future at Juventus is uncertain with his contract expiring at the end of next seasonCredit: AP:Associated Press

The 27-year-old has made just seven starts across all competitions this campaign and is set to enter the final 18 months of his contract.
Dybala has been linked with moves to Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain.
But former Palermo vice-president Guglielmo Micciche, who helped bring the Argentine to Italy in 2012, believes a move to Juventus’ Serie A rivals Napoli would be a better fit.
Micciche told Radio Kiss Kiss: “With (former Palermo president Maurizio) Zamparini, we were in the process of selling Dybala to Napoli.

“However, his agent was pushing for Juventus and in the end he went to Turin.
“I would advise him without question to think of Napoli for his future and I suggest Napoli try to sign him. It’d be a perfect union.

Manager Andrea Pirlo only pockets £1.6million-per-year after taking charge of the club
“Dybala has to leave Juventus, his time with the Bianconeri has finished.
“He should run to Napoli, as he’d find the ideal environment that he needs with the passion of the fans and a coach like Rino Gattuso.”

Juventus are attempting to extend Dybala’s contract but negotiations have been sluggish.
Reports in Italy claim Mauricio Pochettino is eager to recruit the Argentina international if he get the manager’s job at PSG.
Pochettino was unsuccessful in attempts to bring Dybala to Tottenham during his tenure in north London.
The creative forward could also reportedly be heading to Manchester if Old Trafford chiefs can agree a swap deal with Juventus involving Paul Pogba.

After grabbing his first goal of the league season in the 3-1 at Genoa earlier this month, Dybala shot down claims he had been offered fresh terms by Juventus.
But Old Lady chairman Andrea Agnelli is confident a new deal is in the pipeline.
Agnelli told Tuttosport: “I’ve heard the statements, it’s part of my job.
“The good news is the goal [he scored]. Paulo had a difficult time after contracting Covid.
“I heard with great pleasure his love for Juventus. The love is reciprocated.

“We see him as the captain of the future.
“I know he has already received a proposal that would put him among the top 20 best-paid players in Europe.
“We’re looking forward to his response.”

Inter Milan ready to swap Eriksen for PSG star Paredes as they also eye transfer for ex-Arsenal star Gervinho

INTER MILAN are reportedly ready for an active January transfer window which will include Christian Eriksen’s exit.
Italian outlet La Gazzetta dello Sport claim the Nerazzurri are keen on swapping the Dane for Paris Saint-Germain star Leandro Paredes.

The report adds that Antonio Conte is also keen on bringing in cover for Romelu Lukaku – who has bagged 11 goals in 13 Serie A games already this season.
Former Arsenal star Gervinho is said to be top of his wishlist, with the 33-year-old impressing at Inter’s domestic rivals Parma.
Ex-Southampton striker Graziano Pelle is another target after banging in the goals for Chinese Super League side Shandong Luneng.
Yet a deal for Chelsea veteran Olivier Giroud looks less likely after the Frenchman started to earn more minutes under Frank Lampard.

Eriksen meanwhile has been linked with PSG amid the likely arrival of former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino in Paris.
Poch has yet to be confirmed as Thomas Tuchel’s successor but is already at the centre of some spectacular transfer talk.
And SunSport previously reported that the Argentine was against letting go of compatriot Paredes despite remaining keen on Eriksen.
Inter have already admitted midfielder Eriksen is heading out in next month’s transfer window.

CEO Giuseppe Marotta told Sky Italia: “Yes, I can confirm that Christian Eriksen is on the transfer list.
“He’s going to leave in January. He’s not functional to our plans and he had difficulty here at Inter.
“I think it’s right that Christian goes away to find more space.”

AC Milan chase Wilfried Zaha in January as Italian club look to end ten-year Serie A title drought

AC MILAN are chasing Wilfried Zaha in January and believe the Crystal Palace star can fire them to a first title in ten years.
The Italian giants, currently top of Serie A, are looking to add more firepower as they bid to win a first Scudetto since 2010-11.

Stefano Pioli’s AC Milan are top of Serie A and chasing a first title in ten yearsCredit: AFP or licensors

Zaha, 28, has impressed in a central role for the Eagles this season and is on course for his best ever goalscoring campaign.
He already has eight goals and two assists in just 14 matches – his previous best being the ten he scored in 2018-19.
His latest goal came in the 1-1 draw with Leicester thanks to a brilliant volleyed finish.
Milan see Zaha as a great addition to a squad that could potentially end Juventus’ nine-year supremacy in Serie A.

The Rossoneri are said to have been impressed with his switch to the centre and his goal record, especially given the relative lack of service he has received.
Christian Benteke, on three, is the only other Palace player with more than one Premier League goal this season, although Eberechi Eze has starred since arriving.
They are not concerned with his age, instead seeing a player in his prime and ready to contribute immediately.
AC Milan view Ivory Coast international Zaha as the missing piece of the puzzle, but while interest from the Italian club is strong, any potential deal is in its very early stages.

Zaha has been linked with a move away from Selhurst Park for more than 18 months.

He saw Crystal Palace reject a bid for him from Everton in August 2019, while Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham continue to be linked.
However, Palace have always maintained it will take a huge offer to convince them to part ways – especially with his contract running until June 2023.
Roy Hodgson will also be desperate not to lose his main man in January, with his side slipping down the table after a bright start.
Hodgson talked up Zaha last week, saying the former Manchester United man is now in his prime.
He said: “Zaha’s constantly evolving. He’s more and more aware about the need to bring end product to his game.
“He’s always been a good assister, in terms of providing penalties and assists for goals.

“He’s working very hard now to make certain he chips in with goals of his own, and that’s clearly shown by the fact he’s our top goalscorer this season, and he’s done pretty well even in the general goalscoring table.
“I think that he’s becoming more and more aware of what’s required from him and how he can best use his skills for the team’s benefit.
“And I think that’s something that you would expect from someone who is now probably in his best footballing years.”
After he won a fans’ vote to be named Crystal Palace’s player of 2020, Hodgson added: “He’s 28, which is really the time players should be producing their best football and I’m pleased for Wilf that the fans have seen it that way to vote him their player of the season.”

Cristiano Ronaldo seen as ‘person who posts pics of his yacht’ but he’s actually ‘very warm guy’ says Nagelsmann

CRISTIANO RONALDO has received an unlikely endorsement as a ‘very warm guy’ from Julian Nagelsmann.
The RB Leipzig manager claimed the Juventus ace is seen as a ‘person who posts pics of his yacht’ but admitted his true nature is more complex.

Ronaldo’s years of success at Real Madrid and now at Juve have made him one of the most divisive athletes in the world.
Adored by fans for his ridiculous skill, the Portuguese also has an army of critics who hate his petulant behaviour and obsession with the CR7 brand.
Yet SunSport have revealed that Ronaldo is actually one of the most generous stars around and boasts endless acts of charity.
And Nagelsmann has confirmed that he is very familiar with the 35-year-old’s softer side than his larger than life personality on the pitch.

He has to be an incredible training animal, the first to come, the last to leave. He is also a very warm guy
    Julian Nagelsmann on Cristiano Ronaldo

He told Sport Bild: “From the outside, you often only see the person who posts pictures of his yacht.
“But what Sami Khedira told me about Ronaldo’s professional approach to work, for example, is impressive.
“He has to be an incredible training animal, the first to come, the last to leave. He is also a very warm guy. That mix is extremely exciting.”
Nagelsmann almost briefly worked with Ronaldo after being chased by Madrid to replace Zinedine Zidane in May 2018 – two months before CR7 left for Juventus.

Yet the ex-Hoffenheim gaffer rejected the approach with Julen Lopetegui arriving for a short ill-fated stint instead only for Zizou to return to the club less than a year later.
Naglesmann added: “I said that it made no sense at the time.
“It would only have been three weeks until the start of training, I could barely speak Spanish. That would not have been enough for me or Madrid.”
