Antonio Conte sensationally quits Inter Milan days after lifting Serie A title after row with club’s Chinese owners

ANTONIO CONTE has quit Inter Milan – just days after leading them to the Serie A title. The former Chelsea boss had a huge row with the club’s president Steven Zhang over future plans and stepped down after two seasons.

A club statement read: “FC Internazionale Milano can confirm that an agreement has been reached with Antonio Conte for the termination of his contract by mutual consent.
“The club would like to thank Antonio for the extraordinary work that he has done, culminating in Inter’s 19th top-flight title.
“Antonio Conte will forever remain a part of our club’s history.”
Striker Romelu Lukaky hailed Conte in an emotional Instagram post.
The Belgian posted pictures of him with the popular boss with the caption: “2014 we spoke for the first time and we have had a bond ever since.
“We had many moments to work together but only god knows why it never happened earlier.
“You came at the right time and basically changed me as a player and made me even stronger mentally and more importantly we won together! Winning is and it’s all that matters to you and i’m glad that i have had you as a coach.
“I will keep your principles for the rest of my career ( physical preparation, mental and just the drive to win…) it was a pleasure to play for you!
“Thank you for all what you did. I owe you a lot..”
Cash-strapped Inter may have been forced to sell stars to raise more than £80million this summer and slash the wage bill by 20 per cent.
The club’s owners had already disbanded their Chinese team Jiangsu earlier this year and Inter are now also facing financial turmoil.
Even as Inter marched towards the title there was friction between Conte and the board over finances.
The 1996 Champions League winner was of the belief that Inter need to continue spending in order to carry on being successful.
And he wanted new deals for his key players in the run to the title – such as Romelu Lukaku.
But Conte, who had a year left on his deal, has quit the club just days after winning Serie A – the club’s first since 2010 – and will receive around £6m in compensation.
The ex-Chelsea gaffer had hinted earlier this month he is unsure of what the future holds.

He is claimed to have expressed bitterness towards Inter’s new direction in a meeting with the owners.
Simone Inzaghi and Max Allegri are among the leading candidates to take over from him at the San Siro.
Speaking after Sunday’s 5-1 victory against Udinese, Conte arrogantly dedicated Inter’s title win success to himself.
He said: “I dedicate it [the Scudetto] to myself. Because I know that in any case it has not been an easy path in these two years.
“I really had to get everything out of myself. There have also been times when I have doubted things and doubted myself.

“But we have been strong enough to go beyond everything. We have all been good, even me.
“I think it was the right end to an extraordinary year. Even today we played a beautiful game, we didn’t leave anything behind.
“We have collected 91 points, scored more than 90 goals. The best defence, the second-best attack, it means having done something beautiful and important.”

Unlike the Prem Big Six, the two Milan sides and Atletico Madrid, the three clubs have refused to pull the plug on their scheme.
That has infuriated Uefa President Aleksander Ceferin.
He is out for revenge and wants to impose two season bans.
And now that prospect had moved a step closer after Uefa announced its first move.
In a statement, Nyon officials said: “Following an investigation conducted by UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspectors in connection with the so-called ‘Super League’ project, disciplinary proceedings have been opened against Real Madrid CF, FC Barcelona and Juventus FC for a potential violation of UEFA’s legal framework.
“Further information will be made available in due course.”
Uefa has put the screws on all three who now know they face serious sanctions unless they apologise and finally give up the ghost on their concept.
Despite all six English rebels backing out within 48 hours of the ESL announcement, Real, Barca and Juve have still not backed down.

Earlier in May, the trio released a joint statement vowing to go to war with the European chiefs.
The waffling press release also aimed a dig at the nine clubs who initially formed the ESL but pulled out amid fan fury across the world.
Days later, the threat of a two-year suspension from European tournaments was thrown down.

He looked set to depart the club if they missed out on Champions League qualification but Juventus managed to scrape fourth-place in Serie A with a 4-1 win over Bologna.
However, the forward was left on the bench for that crunch clash with boss Andrea Pirlo claiming that decision was down to ‘fatigue’.
A host of clubs have been linked with a move for Ronaldo, with both former sides Manchester United and Real Madrid keen on bringing him back.
Paris Saint-Germain are another side who would love to add him to their ranks while his first club, Sporting Lisbon, would be his mother’s ideal destination for her son.
It has been an unhappy time at Juve as they failed to win the title for the first time in nine years – which will lead to a huge overhaul of the squad this summer.
Now Sky Sports have claimed Ronaldo will sit down to discuss his future with the Italian giants over the coming days before heads off with Portugal for Euro 2020.
The icon wrote on Instagram on Monday: “This year we couldn’t win Serie A, congratulations to Inter for the well deserved title. However, I have to value everything that we achieved this season at Juventus, both in collective and individual terms.
“The Italian Super Cup, the Italian Cup and the Serie A Top Scorer trophy fill me with happiness, mainly due to the difficulty they carry with them, in a country where nothing is easy to win.

Manager Andrea Pirlo only pockets £1.6million-per-year after taking charge of the club

“With these achievements, I reached a goal that I had set myself since the first day I arrived in Italy: to win the Championship, the Cup and the Super Cup, and also to be Best Player and Top Scorer in this great football country filled with tremendous players, giant clubs and a very own football culture.
“Thanks to everyone who took part in this journey! We stand together!”
Even though he was axed for their last match, Ronaldo still managed to claim Serie A’s golden boot award with 29 goals in 33 appearances.
Ronaldo’s future now appears to be linked with that of under-pressure boss Pirlo and sporting director Fabio Paratici.
Both chiefs have faced calls to quit after their miserable campaign.

Inter Milan ‘saved from financial meltdown as US investors pour £237m into club’ with squad fire-sale now on hold

INTER MILAN have reportedly been saved from financial meltdown with US investors set to inject £237million into the club. The Mail claims investment firm Oaktree Capital Group are set to buy a 31.5 per cent stake in the club, replacing LionRock Capital from Hong Kong.

And it’s reckoned they will provide enough cash to prevent Inter from holding a fire-sale on the back of their title win.
Nerazzurri majority owners Suning Holdings suffered major financial problems earlier this year as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
The European Super League was seen as a way to guarantee at least £100m for Inter.
But after it failed following a major fan backlash, club vice-president Javier Zanetti admitted Inter had ‘serious financial problems’.

Reports claimed Antonio Conte’s men were facing numerous exits, with many of their top stars available for bargain prices.
Top goalscorer Romelu Lukaku has been linked with a return to Chelsea.
And wing-back Achraf Hakimi is believed to have caught Arsenal’s eye.
Indeed, Inter’s financial situation was said to have left Conte’s future in doubt, with the former Premier League winner tipped to take charge at Spurs.

But with fresh backing from a new investor, Inter now look set to retain their boss and players.
And they may even have a fresh transfer war chest to spend on new signings as they look to defend their title next term.

Roberto Carlos slams Roy Hodgson for ‘destroying’ him at Inter Milan and says he ‘didn’t know much about football’

ROBERTO CARLOS said Roy Hodgson “destroyed” him at Inter Milan and says the manager “didn’t know much about football” as he made the Brazilian play in midfield.Retiring Crystal Palace boss Hodgson worked with legendary full-back Carlos during the 1995-96 season in Milan.

Carlos said Hodgson ‘didn’t know much about football’
But despite having a good relationship, Carlos is still fuming he was played in centre-midfield under Hodgson – a move that almost cost him a place in the 1997 Copa America winning squad.
Carlos told Marca last year: “Roy Hodgson destroyed me. He made me play in the centre of midfield.
“I wasn’t going to get a chance to play for Brazil like that and there was a Copa America in 1997.
“It’s not that we got on badly, it’s that he didn’t know much about football.
“I spoke with [Inter chairman Massimo] Moratti and I asked him to leave.”
Carlos got his wish as he left that season to join Real Madrid in 1996, and in his 11-year career at the Bernabeu established himself as one of the greatest left-backs of all time.
Hodgson would only manage Inter for one more season – despite returning briefly in 1999 as caretaker manager – but guided them to the Uefa cup final in 1997, losing to Schalke on penalties.
In the same season Carlos won the LaLiga at Madrid, and retired with four league titles and three Champions League winners medals.

Carlos revealed he left Milan for the Spanish capital in order to work with boss Fabio Capello, who like Hodgson managed England.
The 2002 World Cup winner revealed Italian Capello was his most influential manager.
He explained: “I went to Madrid for [Capello], he was the most important coach in my life.”

Cristiano Ronaldo DROPPED by Juventus amid transfer talk as Old Lady still seal crucial top four spot with Bologna win

Juventus would run riot without him, thrashing Bologna 4-1 to seal a top-four finish by the narrowest of margins.
They can breathe a huge sigh of relief after Napoli’s 1-1 draw with Verona ensured the Old Lady will remain in Europe’s biggest club competition.
Federico Chiesa opened the scoring on six minutes before Alvaro Morata and Adrien Rabiot put the game beyond doubt at half-time.
Morata then grabbed his second as Juventus fans waited anxiously to determine whether Napoli had dropped points at home.
Qualification to the Champions League may have kept boss Pirlo in his job.
But Ronaldo’s future in Turin now appears bleak over the latest snub.
The Portuguese ace is the league’s top scorer with 29 goals.
It is only the fifth time in three seasons as a Juventus player that Ronaldo has been benched.

Achraf Hakimi appears to snub Arsenal transfer live on TV as Inter Milan get Serie A title party started

ACHRAF HAKIMI appeared to snub a potential Arsenal move on live TV earlier, as he joined Inter Milan’s Serie A title party. The exciting full-back has played a key role for Antonio Conte this season, as his side romped to glory in Italy.

But with the newly crowned champions suffering financial trouble behind the scenes many of their stars, and even Conte himself, have been linked with moves away.
Arsenal and Bayern Munich are rumoured to be after Hakimi, who is one player that Inter feel they could get big money for.
But the 22-year-old appeared to make his intentions perfectly clear this afternoon.
With the camera on him, Hakimi pointed to the ground at San Siro, before pointing to the badge.
Italian transfer guru Fabrizio Romano also confirmed that the former Real Madrid man is ‘not planning to leave’ this summer.
Hakimi scored seven goals in 37 Serie A outings this season, also laying on an extremely useful ten assists.
And he played his part during his side’s 5-1 romp of Udinese on Sunday afternoon.
It was Ashley Young that got the scoring underway, clipping over the onrushing goalkeeper after Lautaro Martinez’s effort was blocked.
Thousands of Inter fans congregated outside the San Siro to celebrateCredit: EPA

Former Spurs man Christian Eriksen then made it 2-0 with a free-kick on the stroke of half-time.
Martinez grabbed his second from the penalty spot, after Hakimi was fouled following smart dribbling in the box.
Ivan Perisic curled home a beauty with 20 minutes remaining, before an Alexis Sanchez clip ricocheted off the bar before hitting the bewildered Romelu Lukaku and going in.
Udinese pulled one back from the spot late on, but it was never going to spoil Inter’s day.
Delighted stars celebrated in front of San Siro’s limited crowd, before sharing the glory with the thousands that had congregated outside.
