Nicola Sturgeon slammed over lack of leadership by Rangers chief Douglas Park in leaked letter after title celebrations

THE full text of the letter written by Rangers chairman Douglas Park to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon is in the public domain.
And in it the Gers chairman hits back over Deputy First Minister John Swinney’s criticisms of the leadership shown by the club as their fans broke Covid-19 regulations as they celebrated the club’s first title in ten years.

Rangers chairman Douglas Park penned a letter to Nicola Sturgeon after fans broke Covid rules to celebrate winning the Scottish Premiership

Instead, he accuses First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and her government officials of showing a lack of leadership and derelicting HER duty – and demanded clarification of those comments.
The letter cites the ‘behaviour from the other half of the Old Firm outside Parkhead in December’ as one factor which indicated to police intelligence that fans would gather after the title was secured.
Park wrote: “Police intelligence indicated that some fans would congregate in groups given the fact that is not only a historic achievement but also due to the behaviour from the other half of the Old Firm outside Parkhead in December.
“It would have been a lack of leadership not to proactively engage on this matter.

“I must reiterate my concern and displeasure at the claims of the deputy First Minister that there is a lack of leadership at Rangers Football club.
“I think this is particularly disingenuous given the fact we have outlined the timeline above and more importantly the fact you have failed as a constituency MSP to engage with us directly on this matter.
“That to me is a lack of leadership and a dereliction of duty.
“I trust that both you, the deputy first minister and the Justice minister will clarify remarks in light of the facts now presented to you.”

The letter reveals the full timeline of the correspondence between the Ibrox side and Scottish Government officials as the days counted down to their imminent coronation as Scottish Premiership champions.
This began as early as February 22 and included comments from manager Steven Gerrard in his press conference ahead of the meeting with St Mirren.
The letter says the club were left waiting for a response from Justice Minister Humza Yousaf and the police.
It also claims that there was agreement with Police Scotland and the Government that it was ‘arrogant’ to make major statements on the matter before the title was mathematically confirmed after Celtic’s draw with Dundee United on the Sunday.
In apparent reference to the vandalism of benches in Glasgow’s George Square, Rangers also said: “We cannot understand that after police intelligence clearly highlighting that a celebratory crowd would gather, street furniture was not removed as is standard practice.”
The letter continued: “It is particularly disappointing that there has been a lack of acknowledgement from the Scottish Government to the wide range of efforts we undertook in recent weeks to limit public safety issues.
“These are not only in relation to general public safety but with an acute focus on the Covid-19 pandemic and the Government guidance.
“It is also particularly disappointing that Mr Swinney has chosen to lambast Rangers publicy, given the fact we had proactively initiated engagement with Police Sccotland, the SPFL, and the Scottish Government as well as the local Member of Parliament.
“To brand us as ‘disgraceful’ is indeed a ‘deep element of concern’ for Rangers as we believe this narrative is not only unfair but crucially, totally inaccurate.
“On March 6 during our game vs St Mirren, our managing director agreed to endorse a form of words from Police Scotland the Scottish Government.
“We offered that our communications department would liaise with counterparts within both organisations.”

The letter carried on, stating: “The Justice Minister said he would follow up with the police but we did not hear from him again.
“I am at a loss as to what more Rangers Football Club could have done to limit the reaction to winning our historic 55th league title.
“It has been widely accepted amongst the football family that this is one of the greatest modern day sporting achievements and I believe that his should not be downplayed.
“We agreed that it would have been arrogant to use any public statement regarding celebrating a victory prior to us securing three crucial points versus St Mirren.
“Additionally it would have been distasteful to agree a form of word prior to 2pm on Sunday as the mathematical victory depended on a result beyond our control.
“This point was fully acknowledged by both Police Scotland and the government.”

Rangers won their first title in a decade on Sunday to end Celtic’s domestic dominance in Scotland.
And Keane was asked on Sky Sports if he had a congratulatory message for Steven Gerrard’s side.
    He responded: “For Rangers? No.
“Listen, it’s been a tough year for Celtic but they’ll bounce back next year like all great clubs do.”

Fellow pundit and Liverpool hero Jamie Carragher was full of praise for his good friend and ex-team-mate Gerrard.
The duo won the Champions League together at Anfield – but neither had lifted a title.
Carragher said: “They must have been terrified for years that the record would have been beaten by Celtic.
“When Gerrard came in, that was the name of the game to stop Celtic achieving that.

“I think the European campaigns have been the big boost – certainly financially to help him reinvest in the squad.”

Rangers fans in England hold title party as police slam their ‘blatant disregard’ after Corby gathering

POLICE in England have blasted a group of Rangers fans for their ‘blatant disregard’ of rules after a title party in Northamptonshire.
The Ibrox side were crowned Scottish champions on Sunday and that led to mass gatherings in Glasgow.

Around 200 fans are believed to have gathered in Corby

Pyro was set off as part of the celebrations

But those group celebrations happened south of the border as well with around 200 fans believed to have gathered on Abington Park in Corby.
Eyewitnesses said there were ‘at least a couple of hundred people’ on the park earlier today.
It’s reported that flares were set off and Union Jack flags draped from car windows.
Corby has strong historic links with Scotland after thousands migrated from the north to work in the steelworks. The town has its own Rangers supporters group.

A Northamptonshire Police spokeswoman said: “Earlier this afternoon, we responded to reports of a large number of football supporters gathering at a park in Corby.
“Corby currently has one of the highest rates of Covid-19 in the country which makes today’s behaviour all the more ridiculous.
“The time for engaging, explaining and educating people in regards to the rules has passed – everyone knows what they should and shouldn’t be doing and we have therefore been issuing fines to the people involved in this large gathering today.

Local cops blasted the illegal bash
“We hope this reassures the many people who have called in to report this incident to us.
“So many sacrifices have been made in the past year and we can see the finish line. It’s blatant disregard like this that could set us back.”
One local told the Northamptonshire Telegraph: “I understand they are happy but these people are nothing more than idiots.
“They can celebrate in their own homes like everyone has had to spend every special occasion doing for the past year.”
Corby Borough councillor Matt Keane said: “Congratulations Rangers on your title. However Corby currently has one of the highest rates of Covid in the country.
“There are plenty of celebrations that have to be put on hold and this is both dangerous, inconsiderate, illegal and completely disrespectful to the many heroes currently working around the clock to keep us save from Covid.
“Covid has torn many lives apart. I myself suffered badly after contracting the virus last year. Lodge Park has some of the highest Covid rates in Northants and we each have a duty to do our bit and respect the rules regarding lockdown.”

Rangers were crowned champions after Celtic failed to beat Dundee United on Sunday.
It’s the clubs first major silverware in a decade after their rough road back up through the leagues from the bottom of Scottish football following financial collapse in 2012.
Steven Gerrard’s side beat St Mirren 3-0 on Saturday and thousands of fans turned up at Ibrox to greet their champions to be.
The league win sparked parties all over Glasgow and the west, with Gers fans turning up in their masses outside Ibrox and at George Square to celebrate.
First minister Nicola Sturgeon ordered Rangers to tell their “disgraceful” fans to head home with thousands continuing to break lockdown into the night.

It comes after warnings from cops and the government urging fans not to gather in large numbers to celebrate.
Sturgeon tweeted: “I share folks’ anger at this. Everyone has made so many sacrifices in the past year & seeing a minority risk our progress is infuriating & disgraceful.
“It is deeply unfair to the entire country, and the police have a hard enough job already. Please ask fans to go home @RangersFC.”

Large crowds gathered at the city’s George Square – against current lockdown restrictions – since the afternoon.
Thousands of others were escorted by police as they marched through the city.
And the title celebrations continued overnight at George Square.
First Minister Nicola Sturgeon called on the club to tell fans to go home.

And she slammed Covid rule breakers as ‘disgraceful’ and said ‘gathering in crowds just now risks lives’.
Officers confirmed that a number of fans were nicked for alleged offences including the use of pyrotechnic devices and ‘minor disorder’ during the title celebrations.
Police Scotland’s Chief Superintendent Mark Sutherland said: “On Sunday, 7 March, 2021, a pre-planned policing operation was instigated after Rangers FC were confirmed as league champions.
“Despite the coronavirus regulations and the prohibition of gatherings, our officers were faced with a very difficult set of circumstances as many thousands of supporters gathered to celebrate across a number of different venues.

“Our priority was public safety and this included reducing the risk of disorder, road safety and effective crowd management among the complexities of a vociferous crowd. This included established crowd control measures to prevent serious disorder in multiple areas and protect the public.
“An appropriate policing response was in place throughout the day and officers continually engaged and encouraged compliance with coronavirus regulations.
“Over the course of the day a number of minor injuries were sustained by members of the public, some of which were as a result of intoxication.
“Where it was appropriate to do so officers moved to enforcement for a variety of offences including breaches of coronavirus regulations, acts of disorder, pyrotechnic use and a number of arrests for assaulting police officers and sectarian related breach of the peace.
“In total, 28 people were arrested and seven people were issued with fixed penalty notices or will be the subject of a report to the Procurator Fiscal.
“I am grateful to our officers who showed great commitment and professionalism throughout the course of the day, many of whom put their own health at risk during a challenging set of circumstances.”

Fans also gathered at Ibrox for title celebrations – defying current lockdown restrictions – after the Hoops’ latest slip up sealed their fate.
Thousands of supporters were then escorted by police along the city’s Paisley Road West as they marched towards the city centre.

It comes after warnings from cops and the government urging fans not to gather in large numbers to celebrate.
As the night progresses, masses of fans remain on the streets in Glasgow and elsewhere – and the SNP chief has displayed her anger at the “infuriating” situation.

It’s the second day of Rangers fans’ celebrations, as thousands welcomed the side ahead of the St Mirren game yesterday.
Scotland is currently under lockdown restrictions and has been since Boxing Day in 2020.
Light Blues fans also celebrated with the players at the club’s training ground as Steven Gerrard’s side were crowned champions of Scotland.
Thousands of supporters descended to Auchenhowie, near Milngavie, as the Ibrox club celebrated their title triumph.
Fans were crammed together outside the training ground gates as they waited to catch a glimpse of their heroes.

And they weren’t left disappointed as the new title-winners cracked open the champagne and danced in front of the jubilant fans.
Boss Gerrard – now an iconic figure at Ibrox – was mobbed as his car left the training base.
The Liverpool legend pumped his fist out the window as he was driven safely away from the complex by a chauffeur.

Rangers are Scottish champions as Celtic slip up seals title No55 for Steven Gerrard’s heroes

And Steven Gerrard’s men can now, at long last, look forward to getting their hands on the trophy at the end of the season.
Celtic’s 0-0 draw with Dundee United confirmed they will NOT be able to catch up with their Old Firm rivals in the table.
Gloating Rangers fans flew a banner overhead at Tannadice Park to celebrate title No 55.
The Light Blues did their part yesterday by beating St Mirren 3-0 at Ibrox.

Fans gathered outside Ibrox hours in advance of that win and lit flares and smoke bombs to get into the party spirit.
Gerrard and his players were seen dancing in their dressing room after beating St Mirren to move to the brink of the title.

They then had to endure four seasons without a major trophy that featured some heavy defeats to Celtic in the earlier campaigns.

But since his appointment as manager in 2018, Gerrard has instilled a belief in the players and supporters that better times were coming.
This season, his side have been hugely impressive in that they have clinched the title without losing a single game on the way.
That has included two Old Firm wins over Celtic, an 8-0 demolition of Hamilton, late victories like the recent one against Livingston and more.
And that has all now culminated in today’s triumph.

It also represents a massive personal achievement for Gerrard, winning a league title for the first time in his career as a player and manager.
The Liverpool legend won everything he possibly could with the Anfield giants other than the Premier League.
So this will undoubtedly rank as one of the best days of his career now that he can look forward to finally getting his own league winner’s medal.
James Tavernier too has come a long way at Ibrox since first joining the club back in 2015.
After helping the club win promotion back to the Premiership in 2016, he was part of the sides that struggled in the first few years in the top flight.
However, he battled against adversity and eventually was handed the captain’s armband.

And now, Tavernier will undoubtedly go down as a club legend as part of the team that ended the long wait for the title.
Rangers now have two weeks off from Premiership action.
But they can look forward to heading to Celtic Park on Sunday, March 21, as champions for the ultimate title party.
The big question now will be whether fallen champs Celtic will give the new top dogs a guard of honour before kick-off.

And just minutes after the noon kick off at Tannadice, a plane appeared over the stadium with the message: “Can you see us now?! #55 titles.”
Hoops supporters have poked fun at their Old Firm rivals over the years after racking up nine-in-a-row and a historic quadruple Treble.
But Steven Gerrard has destroyed the Parkhead club’s dreams of an historic ten-in-a-row after a near-perfect season.
Yesterday thousands of Rangers fans descended on Ibrox as they kicked off the early title celebrations.

Boss Gerrard and star striker Morelos’ cars were mobbed by supporters as police paved a way for their cars to get into the carpark.
Fans chanted ‘Here we go, ten in a row’ and ‘One Shane Duffy’ outside the stadium, as well as letting off flares.
Gerrard and his title winners hung out of the Ibrox dressing room window to celebrate with fans after meeting them at the gates.
