      Ex-Celtic boss Neil Lennon phoned me out of the blue asking me to clarify my comments, reveals ex-England star

      FORMER England striker Darren Bent has revealed he once received a phone call from Neil Lennon – just a day after commenting on the ex-Celtic boss in his column.Ex-Aston Villa and Tottenham hero Bent says he didn’t even know Lennon at the time when the Parkhead legend rang him up asking him to clarify his comments.

      In a piece written for online outlet Football Insider, Bent was asked whether he’d rather play for Lennon, Celtic boss at the time, or then-Rangers manager Steven Gerrard.
      Bent said he’d pick Gerrard “any day of the week” and branded Lennon “old school” – comments that clearly didn’t go down well with the former midfielder!
      Chatting with Andy Goldstein on talkSPORT, Bent revealed he received a phone call from Lennon the following day.
      Responding to a question on whether he’d ever been contacted after making comments in the media, Bent said: “The funniest one was Neil Lennon.
      “He was on the phone, I never knew him.
      “I used to do a football column called the ‘Football Insider’ and I spoke about Neil Lennon.
      “They asked me ‘would I rather play under Steven Gerrard, when he was at Rangers, or Neil Lennon?’

      “I basically just said Steven Gerrard, probably because he’s a young fresh manager, I’ve played with him, I know him and I said something about Neil Lennon.
      “I think there was a bit of commotion at the time or something that I said.
      “The next day, someone I know text me saying ‘Benty, Neil Lennon asked if can he have your number.’
      “I said no worries, no problem at all.
      “He calls me, he doesn’t text me, he calls me and says ‘I just want to clarify some of the things you said.’
      “So I just said exactly what I thought,  but to be fair after that I then had to work with him on Soccer Saturday a couple times. 
      “Honestly, the nicest guy to the point where I felt I wish I hadn’t said that now.”
      Asked if he new him beforehand, Bent responded: “Never. He phoned me up out of the blue.”

      Charlie Adam RETIRES from football with emotional Instagram post showing rarely seen footage of him signing for Rangers

      CHARLIE ADAM has announced his retirement as a football player. The former Rangers, Liverpool and Scotland man announced that his playing days were over with an emotional post on Instagram.

      It came complete with a video of him signing as a teenager for the Ibrox men, from BBC Scotland show Blue Heaven.
      He is shown signing a three-year-deal complete with him being moved into digs in Glasgow from Dundee.
      There is also the promise from Dutch academy boss Jan Derks of £1000 for every first team match he played.
      Adam went on to make more than 50 appearances for the Ibrox men, before moving south to Blackpool and kick-starting his career south of the border.
      He also graced Stoke City for a seven-year stint – before calling time on his career after a period at his hometown team Dundee.
      He is embarking on a coaching career, having been spotted during the summer with West Ham’s entourage on a tour to St Andrews.
      He wrote: “I feel now is the right time to announce my retirement as a player.
      “I’ve been lucky enough to play for some of the biggest clubs in the world.

      Scottish football team’s strip features giant pint of Tennent’s Lager and fans are all saying the same thing

      AN amateur Scottish football team has taken wacky strip designs to a new level after releasing a kit designed like a pint of TENNENTS. And fans absolutely love it as many insist they’re ready to dip their hands into their pocket to splash the cash on one of the iconic shirts.

      Newcraighall Leith Victoria is the team who had the inventive idea and their new top has caught on with football and pint lovers alike.
      The amateur club have followed in the footsteps of other non-professional clubs who have chosen hilarious and out-the-box designs for their new kits.
      North Caledonian League side Loch Ness FC grabbed the headlines back in 2020 for creating a spectacular top with the Loch Ness monster shown on the front.
      It won several awards and even featured in an episode of Match of the Day with presenter Gary Lineker admitting it was one of the BEST tops he had ever seen.

      Now the Edinburgh club, who play in the Lothian & Edinburgh AFA Premier Division, have followed suit with their new design as they look to emulate previous clubs’ marketing success.
      And they didn’t stop with Tennent’s!
      The club also produced two other strips, with one aiming to please cider fans.
      A red strip shows a more subtle style but it is similar to their original Tennent’s kit.

      But it’s a Strongbow Dark Fruit pattern instead.
      And they decided on a completely different look for a third strip with a PacMan design printed on the front and back as well.
      It’s an interesting change from the two alcoholic drinks, but it could entice gaming fans to purchase one as well.
      And while you can only buy the Dark Fruits version just now, with the other two being restocked in October, some fans insist they can’t wait to get their hands on one them at one point.
      A fan said: “Top notch shirt that, much better than a carling one.”
      While somebody joked: “”Got to be a 2023 pro clubs contender.”
      Another said: “Now that’s a proper kit.”
      One other replied: “That’s actually proper nice man!”
      And someone else laughed: “Don’t have a foreign soccer team I root for until now.”

      Sir Andy Murray’s Rangers connection explained after tennis hero spotted at Ibrox despite supporting rivals Hibs

      SCOTTISH tennis hero Sir Andy Murray was spotted taking in Saturday’s action at Ibrox.Rangers were taking on Dundee United in Glasgow looking to bounce back from their run of poor defeats.

      And Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s men put an end to their torrid run too with a 2-1 win over The Tangerines.
      Murray had been back in the city taking part in the Davis Cup.
      He played alongside Wimbledon hero Cam Norrie – who was also in attendance alongside his Rangers-daft father.
      The Team GB duo had just been edged out of the competition after two losses to the USA and The Netherlands.
      They lost a thrilling tie to the Americans before a 7-6 6-7 6-3 defeat to Dutch duo Wesley Koolhof and Matwé Middelkoop saw them eliminated before the quarter-finals. 
      Team GB team mates Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury were in attendance too and along with Murray and Norrie were presented with a shirt at full-time.
      Murray is a supporter of fellow Premiership side Hibs but had trials with The Light Blues as a youngster.
      He trained with Rangers at 15 but declined to take the opportunity any further in order to focus on his career in tennis.

      It appears he still has a soft spot for the Ibrox outfit even 30 years later.
      On the pitch, the home side ran out narrow winners against an inspired United team.
      Birthday boy Antonio Colak scored twice before Liam Smith pulled one back in the secon -half.
      Interim away boss Liam Fox’s side had a last minute penalty call turned down when Jamie McGrath was brought down in the area.
      Elsewhere however, a section of Dundee United fans sparked fury at the game by disrupting the minute’s silence to Queen Elizabeth II.
      Radio microphones clearly picked up booing as the Govan stadium fell silent prior to kick-off, before supporters were heard chanting the words: ‘Lizzie’s in a box’.
      There then came a rendition of ‘God Save the King’, as Ibrox fans made their displeasure known about the disruption.
      Most other Scottish sides decided to hold minute’s applause rather than silences amid fears this kind of protest could occur.
      Celtic fans caused controversy on Wednesday for offensive banners ahead of the Champions League clash with Shakhtar Donetsk in Poland.
      One displayed the words “F*** the crown” and another made reference to Royal intruder Michael Fagan.

      Celtic fans display anti-Royal Family banner and chant through minute’s applause one day before Queen’s funeral

      CELTIC fans mocked the death of the Queen with a disgraceful banner ahead of today’s Scottish Premiership clash with St Mirren.Yesterday, the Saints revealed that they would hold a minute’s applause in honour of Queen Elizabeth II ahead of the match at St Mirren Park.

      The club urged fans to be respectful of the gesture, but a group of Celtic supporters were quick to disturb and continued to chant throughout.
      Loud boos were heard amongst the applause and it was clear that many weren’t interested in paying their respects to the Queen, who passed away last Thursday.
      They chanted “If you hate the royal family clap your hands” during the applause and when the match kicked off, as a banner telling other supporters to join in was seen in the Celtic crowd.
      The incident sparked an apology from Sky as commentator Ian Crocker said: “Apologies if you were offended by anything you might have heard. Most showed respect, some did not.”

      Before the game, Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou asked fans to show respect during the applause.
      He said: “There’s a minute’s applause (on Sunday), we will abide by whatever obligations and responsibilities we have as a football club. We will do that in a respectful manner. We want our supporters to do the same.”
      St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson also urged crowds to respect the tribute.
      He said: “I don’t make those decisions on how we show our respect. It’s hard enough picking a team.

      “But if that’s what it is – a minute’s applause – then obviously we will respect that as much as we can as well.
      “I can only speak for myself and for St Mirren. As a football club we will show our utmost respect, I personally will show my utmost respect.
      “You hope that people have that respect during the game because someone has died.
      “No matter what your beliefs are, I think it’s important that society respects that.”
      Celtic went on to lose the game 2-0, but Postecoglou’s side still sit at the top of the table.

      They then broke into a disgusting chant during the period of silence.
      Supporters were shamefully heard singing “Lizzie’s in a box.”
      Rangers fans impeccably observed the minute’s silence, before erupting in a chorus of boos directed at the away fans.

      The interrupted silence was followed by a rendition of ‘God Save the King’.
      Rangers also played the National Anthem in midweek ahead of their 3-0 Champions League defeat to Napoli.
      The Glasgow club defied Uefa who banned UK clubs from singing the anthem as they didn’t want kick-off times delayed.
      Although the Gers will not face any Uefa action for honouring the Queen before their meeting with the Italian side.

      Sky Sports producers ordered to turn down crowd noise at Celtic clash if offensive chants about the Queen are heard

      SKY SPORTS staff have reportedly been instructed to turn the sound levels down if Celtic fans sing offensive chants about the Queen at St Mirren tomorrow.BT Sport had to apologise as their cameras focused on an offensive banner during Celtic’s Champions League game away to Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday.

      Now the Daily Mail claims that Sky Sports’ staff “have been primed to avoid a repeat” during coverage of the upcoming Scottish Premiership clash.
      Ofcom regulations state that broadcasters should avoid showing any material that could cause offence to viewers.
      And this fresh report states that “the regulator is understood to have provided further guidance this week that insulting material about the Queen falls into that category”.
      Now Sky Sports’ production staff “have been instructed to turn down sound levels or even switch off individual microphones” if any offensive chants are heard during the Celtic game.

      St Mirren have confirmed that they will hold a minute’s applause before kick off rather than the period of silence that has been held at almost every other UK ground.
      That is due to fears of mass booing from the away section.
      Celtic boss Ange Postecoglou has urged his team’s supporters to respect the planned minute’s applause.
      That plea came after fans unveiled anti-monarchy banners prior to their Champions League game on Wednesday.

      Rangers ‘looking at ex-Premier League and Manchester City free agent Fabian Delph’

      RANGERS are ‘looking’ at ex-Premier League star Fabian Delph, who is now a free agent after leaving Everton at the end of last season.The Gers have been linked with a move for the 32-year-old midfielder, according to Football League World.

      He is on the market after spending three years at the club when he transferred from Manchester City.
      But they face stiff competition from a host of Premier League teams, including Sheffield United, Middlesbrough, Sunderland, West Bromwich Albion and Reading, who are all reportedly looking at Delph.
      And ex-Rangers star Alan Hutton has put forward his former Aston Villa teammate as a “great” free agent signing for the Ibrox side.
      Hutton played with Delph at Villa Park between 2011 and 2015, before the English midfielder moved to Manchester City.
      And he believes the 32-year-old could offer some much-needed leadership at Ibrox as he labelled him a “winner”.
      However he did throw a cautionary word in regarding Delph’s fitness, particularly after Rangers’ struggles in keeping Aaron Ramsey fit last season.
      Hutton told Football Insider: “Obviously I know him very well, he was my captain at Aston Villa so I know what he brings to the party.
      “He’s obviously a great player and within the dressing room he’s an absolute leader, definitely a winner.

      “That’s probably something that Rangers could have at this moment in time.
      “The one question mark that’s always been over him is fitness issues. You look at when [Aaron] Ramsey came in, there was a lot riding on him coming in and hitting the ground running and doing well and it didn’t work out.

      “Of course I know him, he’s a great player, he could add a lot to that midfield but could he play on a consistent level week in week out?
      “There would always be that question mark there.”
