‘I was completely out of order’ – Kyle Lafferty breaks silence after being hit with 10-GAME ban for sectarian slur

KYLE LAFFERTY has admitted his actions were ‘completely out of order’ after being slapped with a mammoth ban for use of a sectarian slur. The Kilmarnock frontman has been hit with a 10-game suspension by the Scottish FA.
Lafferty scored for Killie against Dundee United on TuesdayCredit: Kenny Ramsay
But he’ll now be out of action for the club until early 2023Credit: Kenny Ramsay
The punishment’s been handed down after a video emerged on social media last month of Lafferty being pranked by a Celtic fan in a nightclub.
After the fan shouts ‘up the Celtic,’ Lafferty could be seen aiming the slur “Fenian b******” in his response.
Kilmarnock immediately launched an investigation into the situation and slapped the 35-year old with a huge fine.
He was also axed from the Northern Ireland squad having been on international duty at the time of the video emerging.
After concluding their investigation, Killie said Lafferty regretted his actions and that he felt he’d let everyone down.
Now that the wider punishment has been confirmed, the striker himself has now broken his silence on the situation.
Saying sorry for the distress caused, Lafferty has also admitted his reaction was ‘out of order.’
He’s also committed to working with anti-sectarianism charity Nil By Mouth, as well as Kilmarnock’s own ‘Football for Own’ programme.
    Most read in Football
In a statement released via the club’s website, Lafferty said: “I want to deeply apologise to the club, supporters and my family for the distress caused over the past month. I totally acknowledge that my reaction to the incident was completely out of order.
“There is no excuse, it’s something that I immediately regretted and have been embarrassed about ever since. I absolutely accept that I should not have responded to provocation in that manner.
“I placed myself in a position that has been very difficult to deal with, so I’m now determined to work with Nil By Mouth to ensure that others, particularly the youngsters at the club, learn from my mistake and avoid putting themselves in any type of similar situation in the future.”
Lafferty had still been featuring for Killie while the SFA’s decision loomed.
He scored in the recent 2-2 draw against Hearts and also found the net from the penalty spot in the League Cup quarter-final win over Dundee United on Tuesday night.
But boss Derek McInnes will now have to do without Lafferty until 2023.
As it stands, his first game where he’ll be back available again will be the League Cup semi-final clash with Celtic.
That takes place at Hampden Park over the weekend of 14/15 January.
With the winter weather about to come into play, however, any postponements between now and then could throw his availability for the crunch clash at the national stadium into fresh doubt.

Jon Flanagan, RangersCredit: Willie Vass – The Sun
Flanagan played under Steven Gerrard at Rangers for two seasons after joining the club on a free in 2018.
He arrived in Glasgow with expectations on his shoulders after breaking through the ranks at Liverpool as a youngster – earning a cap for England aged just 21.
Injuries held him back throughout his career though and he failed to keep a spot in the Anfield first team.
He was then shipped out on loans to Burnley and Bolton respectively.
Gerrard then put his faith in the defender following his release from Liverpool as he handed him the opportunity to revive his career at Ibrox.
Flanagan took his chance under the Liverpool hero and started the first few games of the 2018/19 season at left-back.
But the arrival of Borna Barisic in August gave him added competition and it was the Croatian who cemented himself as Gerrard’s first choice.
Flanagan then struggled to regain his spot in the starting side as injuries started to get the better of him again before his inevitable release in 2020.

He then signed for Belgian outfit Charleroi for a season before joining Danish side HB Koge – where he ended his career.
Flanagan posted an emotional message on social media to announce his retirement as he thanked fans for their support throughout his career.
He wrote: “Unfortunately dafter careful consideration I have made the toughest decision I’ve ever had to make; to retire from professional football.
“The last 14 months I have tried everything possible to recover from my most recent knee surgery.
“However, ultimately my long term health has to come first, so following medical advice the right thing for me to do now is it retire from the game.

Ex-Celtic ace Scott Sinclair finally finds new club as he joins up with former Rangers man Joey Barton at Bristol Rovers

SCOTT SINCLAIR has completed a career fairytale move by re-signing for his first club, Bristol Rovers. The ex-Celtic star, 33, has been without a club since being released by Preston North End at the end of last season.
Scott Sinclair enjoyed a trophy-laden spell at CelticCredit: Kenny Ramsay – The Sun Glasgow
Sinclair, who has been at 14 clubs throughout his career, will link up with two former Rangers flops at Rovers – and one of them will be his manager.
Joey Barton is currently boss of the League One outfit while Jordan Rossiter is one of the team’s regular starters in midfield.
Sinclair, who was part of Celtic’s Treble Treble-winning dynasty, left the Hoops in January 2020 as first team opportunities dried up under then-boss Neil Lennon.
He scored 62 goals in 167 games for the Glasgow giants.
Sinclair, whose glamorous Wag Helen Flanagan played Rosie Webster in Coronation Street, moved to Preston and spent the next 18 months with the Championship club, making 85 appearances and scoring 14 goals.
After being let go by the Deepdale club in the summer he began training with former club Chelsea in a bid to maintain his fitness.
Sinclair originally signed for the Blues in 2005, who spotted him as a teenager playing for Bristol Rovers.
The winger had joined Rovers at the age of nine and became their second-youngest ever debutant at 15 years and 77 days old in a match against Leyton Orient in 2004.

He failed to crack the first team at Stamford Bridge and was loaned out numerous times, taking in spells at Plymouth Argyle, QPR, Charlton Athletic, Crystal Palace, Birmingham City and Wigan Athletic.
He played 18 times in the Premier League for Wigan and that prompted promotion-chasing Swansea to swoop for him and he was a hit in the Championship, scoring 19 times in 43 games for the Swans.
Sinclair was a regular for the Welsh side in the Prem and Manchester City paid £8million for him in 2012.
But once again he found himself on the fringes of first-team action and he was loaned out again, to West Brom and Aston Villa.
The Villans took him on permanently and it was after a year at Villa Park that he joined Celtic under Brendan Rodgers.

St Johnstone 1 Celtic 2 – Giakoumakis nets last gasp winner as Hoops recover from injury time equaliser for huge win

GIORGOS GIAKOUMAKIS loves saving his best until last.Late, late goals have become a speciality for him with Celtic – and this time it was an astonishing 95th minute winner.
Celtic’s Giorgos Giakoumakis celebrates scoring their side’s crucial winner
Just as Celtic appeared to be handing Rangers another enormous boost, the Greek powerhouse dramatically pounced with a precious finish.
Back in August Giakoumakis netted in the 90th minute against Hearts and FOUR times last season he also struck in the dying minutes.
Here, though, was his latest yet – and some delirious supporters spilled out of the away end to celebrate with him trackside.
Amazingly, Saints’ Alex Mitchell had made it 1-1 in the 93rd minute following an Andy Considine own goal just before half time.
But they still couldn’t see it out for a point.
Cameron Carter-Vickers’ return after a three-game absence was massive for the champions, the Celts losing two of them and labouring to victory over Motherwell.
To underline his importance to the team he also got the armband with Callum McGregor now facing being out until after the World Cup.
Alexandro Bernabei came in for his first Hoops league start since a so far underwhelming £3.75 million summer move as boss Postecoglou made six changes from the midweek Champions League defeat in Leipzig.

Celtic have been nowhere near their best in recent weeks – but this was still a huge task for Saints.
The visitors had triumphed in their last 11 visits while they took seven off Callum Davidson’s men in their last meeting at Parkhead in April.
Ali Crawford and Stevie May dropped out for the Saints from the defeat to Kilmarnock with Ukrainian attacking youngster Max Kucheriavyi, 20, given a full debut.
For 42 minutes the Perth outfit stifled Celtic.
Celtic threatened after three minutes, Stephen Welsh heading over a Matt O’Riley corner.
Bernabei enjoyed a promising first half, composed in defence and plenty of attacking purpose, and he got to the bye-line in the seventh minute and fired a great ball across the face of goal with no takers.
UNBELIEVABLE!! 🤯After St Johnstone equalise in injury time, Giakoumakis goes the other end and scores the winner for Celtic!! pic.twitter.com/SscALgQWWq— Sky Sports Scotland (@ScotlandSky) October 8, 2022

He was at the heart of a fine move seconds later which resulted in Jota picking out Liel Abada just three yards from goal – only for the Israeli, failing to open up his body, awkwardly stabbing an effort high and wide.
Soon after Saints had a moment out of nothing, frontman Nicky Clark in ahead of Welsh and attempting to lob Joe Hart with a chip which dropped not too far over.
Saints No1 Remi Matthews produced an excellent finger tip save from an O’Riley left foot shot from the edge of the box pushing the ball against the post.
Then Sead Haksabanovic tried his luck from distance with a shot which Matthews spilled out but the recalled Giakoumakis couldn’t get to.
Celtic constantly probed as they looked for a bit of individual brilliance to cut open a compact home back-line.

An Abada cross drifted away from a lost Matthews and clipped the crossbar.
Seven minutes from the break Saints’ attacker Kucheriavyi had a wild left foot shot over.
Just when it appeared Celtic were going into the break frustrated they opened the scoring.
Reo Hatate’s delightful pass put Hakasbanovic into the box and from his wicked, driven cross to the near post Saints stopper Considine diverted it past Matthews and into the roof of the net with an outstretched leg.
Celtic deserved the lead, no question. But it still felt harsh on a Saints side which had worked so hard to keep them at bay only to be undone by an OG.
The Hoops thought they’d killed the game in the 50th minute with a Giakoumakis bullet header from an O’Riley free-kick – but he was flagged offside.
Celtic had Daizen Maeda on for Jota to give Saints something different to worry about.
Haksabanovic had grown into the game and was a thorn with his piercing runs.
Saints struggled to get out of their half as Celtic passed for fun and relentlessly worked either flank for openings.
O’Riley hit a free-kick inches past and then Abada had two big chances in quick succession – firstly well denied by Matthews in a one-on-one and then again by the keeper who made a full-dive save at his near post.
Celtic’s Saad Haksabanovic’s drilled delivery led to Andrew Considine’s own goal
Saints had brought on and in the 69th minute he was suddenly sent clear into the Celts box by fellow sub Ali Crawford. But, agonisingly for the home fans, his point-blank right foot shot was touched by a diving Hart onto the far post before Tony Ralston cleared.
It was a massive escape for the Hoops.
Both sides made changes going into the closing stages – and we moved into an incredible final three minutes of normal time and, then especially, five minutes added time.
Maeda thought he’d made it 2-0 in the 87th minute only for Celtic to again be denied by an offside flag.
Then a minute later Saints sub Connor McLennan blasted over a great chance from close range.
Hart pushed away a powerful May shot as Saints maintained late pressure.
Three minutes into injury time, though, the home side sensationally levelled.
The Celts defence woefully failed to deal with a speculative Crawford free-kick and the ball dropped for Mitchell in the box just six yards out and with only Hart to beat he side-footed home.
But just as it seemed the Hoops had astonishingly thrown away two points they delivered a remarkable winner.
As the game moved into the final extra minute they worked the ball to the overlapping Bernabei – helped by Wright pulling up injured – and from his low cross Giakoumakis stormed in to bundle home from four yards and spark bedlam among the away support.

Aberdeen boss Jim Goodwin slapped with EIGHT game ban after Ryan Porteous ‘cheat’ row

ABERDEEN boss Jim Goodwin has been hit with a mammoth EIGHT-MATCH suspension by the SFA after branding Hibs’ Ryan Porteous a ‘blatant cheat.’The Pittodrie gaffer was summoned by SFA chiefs for blasting Hibs star Porteous after the sides met last month.
Goodwin and Porteous exchanged words at the end of the matchCredit: Andrew Barr
Six games of the suspension will apply immediately – with two games suspended until the end of the current campaign.
Goodwin was left seething by referee David Dickinson’s decision to award the Hibees a penalty after Liam Scales was deemed to have brought the Scotland centre-back down.
To compound matters for the Dons, Scales was shown a second yellow card and dismissed.
Martin Boyle slammed in the equaliser from the spot and Hibs went on to win 3-1 at Easter Road.
Fuming Goodwin hit out after the game and accused Porteous of “blatant cheating” and said the 23-year old had been LAUGHING about it.
At the time, he said: “I don’t know what Liam Scales can do when Ryan Porteous grabs him in a headlock and drags him to the ground.
“I don’t know how many times the boy Porteous can get away with that kind of stuff.
“We’re telling our players in midweek to be careful with him in the box, be careful with him at set-plays and don’t touch him as he will go over.
    Most read in Football
“We showed our players a number of instances when Porteous has won penalties like that in the past.
“People will say he’s good at it and he’s clever. But it’s blatant cheating as far as I’m concerned and it’s cost my team points.
“I told him to his face after the game what I thought of him. I don’t care what he reads in the paper on Sunday and Monday.
“He knows. He’s laughing about it. He celebrates winning penalty-kicks like he’s scored a goal.”
The SFA didn’t take too kindly to Goodwin’s words and he was hauled in front of Hampden chiefs to answer a charge.

Goodwin, 40, was accused of breaching two SFA rules with regards his comments.
He was charged under rules 73 and 77 of the governing body’s constitution, jurisdiction which broadly covers offensive and/or insulting statements and being seen to act in the best interests of the game.
